Caracas, VENEZUALA--Just for the sprawling suburbs up the hills. Reminds me of a couple of places here on the Gold Coast
Vancouver, CANADA--Always loved Vancouver. And the mountains sure do make a good backdrop
Shenzhen, CHINA--So much light. Love the coast
Paris, FRANCE--How could you not love Paris? Does anyone have a pic of Paris during the 2000 fireworks? They were great with them going off all up and down the Eiffel tower

Im not jealous and im not green with envy, sorry to say that and im sorry for all you ppl out there that think Im a complete idiot, i have my own oppinion and i will stick by it, im the last thing but jealous, believe me. I cant stand living in a city with skylines that look like something from mars or whatever, they dont look like a skyline to me, it looks like a bunch of tacky heaps of medal and glass. sorry to everyone, but its what i think. :(

Those Tokyo scrapers are very mighty, chunky: My favourite type of scraper :p i'm hopefully goin to be there in 3 yrs (hopefully) so i'm counting the days :crazy: has anyone got a time machine? :)

Hi Benji :) no one is going to crucify you for your view: i understand to an extent your position, Scrapers in Southeast Asia, Korea and China have less width and "grandeur" than those in Japan, Europe or N America; but there is a big reason why:

For Southeast asia its simply because that local economy or location has never exactly been MEDC (Developed) enough for hoarde-loads of foreign investors to locate their central "Asia Offices" in countries such as Thailand, or the Philippines, choosing instead to base them in Japan (Explains the large scrapers in Japan built durin expansion in the 70s and 80's; they dont build scrapers like that anymore) and making the "2nd rate" South East Asian economic winners their smaller "satellite" branches (although things in these three countries are slowly changing, especially in Malaysia, or have already changed: as in Singapore). For countries in South East Asia which struggle economically and socially, wont you consider it highly weird that they have alot of these highly developed Commercial districts and wholesome skylines?

All of that is due to local entrepeneurs and new multinationals basing themselves in these countries as opposed to basing them in the traditonal parts of the succesful business arena (NYC, Tokyo, London etc): this shows the rapidly growing commercial sector in these countries, these young succesful multinationals raising income and their nations economies in the process. I mean Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur and Manila COULD have turned out like Yangon, Vientianne or Phnom Penh (capitals of the less successful countries in Southeast Asia, all of them without even basic infrastructure) but they havent! That in itself is a testiment to the people of the country themselves and their drive to aim for MEDC status. In countries like Malaysia they have even set a deadline for them to be MEDC by: 2025 i think..

That's what does it for me: the skylines (as well as infrastructure like transport, highways, flyover, LRT etc) in these countries shows the drive of the people and professionals and the foundations being laid for a better economic future not only for those in these countries, but for the whole region.. they dont call these Asian-Tiger Economies for nothing ;) and in the end: isnt building a better world for our kids more important than how "grand" a scraper is? Plus i believe they dont look all that bad :tongue: just my opinion... ;):D i'm sure if you were to visit any one of these cities and see their skylines for real maybe you might think twice about the tacky comment: pictures sometimes dont show things as vast as they really are ;)- oooopsie that statement was all just opinion again :D LOL

Honestly what is with that? It's as if it's standard for all the office building to use green/flourcent to light the office, not that it doesnt look good, but it would kind of freaky working under lights like that.

I hate the florescent light effect you're talking about here. I wish all buildings and streets would be lit with white light, not florescent. It's not very noticeable when you're just looking at the lights in real life but when someone takes a picture over the span of a few seconds, holy crap does the disgustingness of florescent lights come out.

I'm a huge backer of a stronger French fact in Canada. Check my posts if you'd like. Expecting anglophones to say St-Laurent is ridiculous though. You're going way too far it you expect an anglophone to use French names when speaking their own language. Do francophones use the English names in anglophone places? Do they say London, Australia, or even Nova Scotia? No, you call them what they are in French. Londres, Australie, and you even translate the last one to Nouvelle-Ecosse. The local name isn't even English, it's Latin. Strangely, the only place I can think of where you make an exception is New York.

You can't expect anglophones to do this when francophones don't do it themselves.

HISTORY :

In french we don't say Scotland it is Écosse from Écusson during the Trudor
Dynasty so it apperas logic to say Nova= Nouvelle / Scotia= Écosse

BTW Nova Scotia is not even in English it is in LATIN ..

Say what you like, and how you like about places, but please do not tell us how to say our own place names. The history of Quebec is a mixture of French and English, and St Lawrence River is every bit as acceptable to say. This is a picture thread, so we now return to pictures (.........or else........). :)

He isn't willing to acknowledge the double standard at all, so it's a complete waste of time explaining it to him. Next he'll be saying we can't use the word Japan or Finland and that we have to say Nippon and Suomi. There will always be arrogant people who expect everyone to do it their way or not at all.

Are you thinking maybe I am psychic? If they are your own pictures, then say so!! Crediting means saying who took the photo, even if it was you. I am frankly astounded how difficult it is to get this very simple rule across to people.
