Is the bay iced over in that shot?
I was only in Hakadote for a short time and went up the cable car to the top of the mountain.Great view!!!!!!
I never got a chance to see the tomb.Acutually I never knew it existed untill I saw this thread.Interesting stuff

You are right.
1853 US Navy visited Japan.
At that age, Japan is under national seclusion.
Japan felt imminent threat from Western concert of powers.
Then they learned the way of making western fort from French soldiers.
1857 Construction started.
1866 Completed.

No. this bay is not iced.
This bay was made by the meteor.
The seas aroud Japan are not iced.
But the coast of North side of Hokkaido, we have numerous number of drift ice.They coverd all over the surface of the sea every year... Beautiful.
