Bhong Mosque

The late Rais Ghazi Mohammad, the landlord of a large estate, began this project in 1932 in Bhong village, the most important of the scattered villages on his vast property. The mosque was to be the most glorious building in his palace compound which also included a smaller mosque, a madrasa and rooms for students. The work of specialists gathered from all over Pakistan and India (master masons and craftsmen from Rajasthan, calligraphers and painters from Karachi), the compound was designed and constructed over a period of nearly 50 years. Broadly eclectic in their use of sources, the builders borrowed stylistic elements from nearby Lahore, as well as Iran, Spain and Turkey, and combined them with Western colonial elements of the 1940s. Materials and crafts used range from the traditional (teak, ivory, marble, coloured glass, onyx, glazed tile work, fresco, mirror work, gilded tracery, ceramic, calligraphic work and inlay) to the modern and synthetic (marbleised industrial tile, artificial stone facing, terrazzo, coloured cement tile and wrought iron). Only traditional materials were used in the mosque interiors. In the words of the jury: "Bhong enshrines and epitomises the popular taste in Pakistan with all its vigour, pride, tension and sentiment. Its use, and misuse, of signs and symbols expresses appropriate growing pains of an architecture in transition."

Recipient of the Aga Khan Award for Architecture, 1986.

3.22 km away from Thatta is the Shah Jehan Mosque, which is the masterpiece of mughal construction. This mosque was built by the constructor of Taj Mahal in 1647 A.D. Build towards the middle of the 17th century, this sets a glorious example of Muslim architecture and heritage. This mosque was build by Mir Abdullah under the order of The Mughal emperor, Shah Jehan. Shah Jehan mosque is a superb example of crafty tile work. Its 93 domes and 33 arches with varying sizes add to their architectural beauty. The domes have been exquisitely laid in a mosaic of radiating blue and white tiles. Thatta with so much offering poses to be a prime choice of visitors.

The Defence mosque in the above posts has been wrongly named.

The correct name for the mosque is Tooba Mosque. or Masjide Tooba

The mosque in Gwadar is beautiful. it reminds of those bleached villages in greece. The architecture reminds me of the meditteranean. developers of gwadar should take inspiration from gwadars history and local architecture, as should the rest of pakistan. It easy to build a whole bunch of glass skyscrapers and make it look like every other city in the developed world.

The Mosque Mahabat Khan, Peshawar’s outstanding architecture legacy, in Jeweller’s Bazar was constructed by the Governor of Peshawar Mahabat Khan Mirza Lerharsib, in 1630 during the era of the Mughal Emperor Shah Jehan. The Mosque was desecrated and badly damaged by the Sikhs in early nineteen century and later when the fire broke out in 1898. The British renovated it for the first time and brought back some of its grandeur.

Salam,

Those mosques in interior Sindh (near Thattha) are really breathtaking. I am fascinated by Sindhi look of buildings when they decorate them in their traditional blue color.... or Ajrak patterns!! That is distinctive sindhi and is awsome.

Any body has any other pictures from mosques from sindh with sindhi blue patterns??

I bet some of those mosques can make it to world heritage sights.

Tough I prefer Ottoman mosques, I must admit that Pakistani ones are amazing. Mahabat Khan mosque' interior is breath taking! So sophisticated and elegant. :)

Yes , Thanks Techno & kbboy for sharing pics of Shahjahan & Chitrali mosques. Never been to Chitral but have been to Thatta mosque few years ago and its so beautiful esp. its rooftop domes. Still cherish the pics taken there.

The old mosques look so nice, the new ones are often look cheap or misproportioned. I wish some of the old mosques could be renovated, they'd be a real tourist draw. And if we could renovate the old cities of Lahore, Peshawar, and Pindi, and light them up as food street in Lahore is lit, then tourists would be racing to come to Pakistan.

^^ Agree with you but it seems we as Pakistanis lack either imagination, motivation or both.
These renovated places could be used for many things incl. food street, outdoor shopping for cottage industries wares esp. ones targetting tourists.

Even some kind of free theatrical events like street theaters of independent nature by amateurs youngsters. After all didn't SA used to have street fairs in the bygone years. Why not revive some old tradition and tell your cultural history in some innovative ways.

But first and foremost they would have to make these old bldgs come back to their original glory and address all the safey issues.

Taxila to have modern education city

From Our Correspondent
WAH CANTT - Director General Heavy Industries Taxila Lt. General Israr Ghuman has said that work on the project of establishment of international standard education city with an estimated cost of one billion rupees is in final stages and education activities in this city would be commenced during current year.
He was addressing as a chief guest on the occasion of inauguration ceremony of Art and science exhibition at Margalla Academy Taxila Cantonment. He said that the project Heavy Industries Taxila Education City (HITEC) comprising on the 800 canals is consists upon pre school, junior school, boys and girls high school, boys and girls college and prestigious religious research centre. The city would also have residential and boarding facilities for the teaching staff as well as students. He said that a sum of 40 million are being spent upon provision of facilities including furniture, books and other academic and teaching tools. He said that the education central library would be equipped with latest IT facility and 0.35 million books are reached for the library.
He said that HITEC would be role model not only for the country but rest of the Muslim world.

HITEC stands for Heavy Industries Taxila Education City. It is a premier institute of the modern era. It is situated in Heavy Industries Taxila, Pakistan's Defence Industries. Taxila is an historical city at Peshawar Highway. HITEC University Contains HITEC College for men & women Cambridge School, HITEC Pre School, HITEC High School for boys & Girls.

In HITEC University school & College started in 2005 & University classes started on November, 2007. HITEC was inaugurated by the president of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.

HITEC has a highly equipped state of the art facility not available in most of Pakistani universities. It has highly qualified foreign faculty.

HITEC is currently affiliated with UET Taxila but the recognisation with PEC is also in process & will be completed soon.

It has been completed now n wt a place it is.
Education city is well planned n modern, I was given a tour by the principal of "intitute of relegious education n research" I must say it is if not THE BEST then one of the best relegious institutes in pakistan.
All the acadamic blocks r in shape of cresent with the beautiful n shining institute of relegious education n research made by white marble in the middle as a shining star representing pakistani flag.

This look exactly like one of those mosques you find in Turkey. Quite a gift Turkey has given us. Good stuff.
King Faisal fit the bill hence the name.....the Turks only provided the design but decor was done by Pakistani artists like Gul Gee and others including the 30ton crescent and the 10k lights chandelier.

Here is one of the oldest mosque in Pakistan, built in 1584, in Umerkot, Sindh. In honour of Emperor Akbar when he stayed ovenight in town.

KUCHI MOSQUE

KUCHI Mosque is named after the Kuchi community living around the mosque at Dhobi Ghat. The mosque was rebuilt about 4, 5 years back and is known as now KASHTI WALI MASJID (the ship like mosque). This is the 3rd time when it is being constructed while the original was built by the laborers working alongisde the lyari river when they were constructing the walls at the river, more than 100 years back, during the British era.

That's actually the justification that's given. Then you tell them thier own prophet bought land in madina from non-mulsim boys (some story like that) and the reply is "woh toh naik thay, hum un jaise thori ho saktay hain, aap hamain unsay kion mila rahay hain". That's actually the generic reply whenever in any situation you tell someone that the prophet handled something in a different way, like forgiving people who hurt him, etc. Shit you not.

One of the worst example is on Murree Road between Faizabad and Serena near rawal dam / chuk shehzad entrance. you can see it on Google Map that is literally on the road and has made it impossible for any widening / remodelling
