[David Moseley] I asked my colleague at work yesterday what he’d prefer, a Province win over the Sharks in the Currie Cup final or the Boks walking away with the Grand Slam after a month in the United Kingdom. The fool opted for a successful Springbok tour. He’s got no sense of priority, and quite clearly not the diehard Province fan he says he is.

I hope the Boks do well (I’ll take a win against Ireland) but nothing quite says na-na-na na-na-nah like a Currie Cup trophy sitting in your team’s display cabinet. I’d even take a Currie Cup over a Super Rugby title because, with or without the Springboks playing, it’s still the best domestic tournament around. So without further adieu, five reasons why Province will take the title this weekend:

1. Province are awesome
While not entirely scientific, it has been shown that sides that are awesome are more prone to winning titles. While Province have been effective in the Currie Cup in the last few years, they have failed to reach adequate levels of awesome. They started to head this way during the 2010 Super 14, but never quite reached maximum awesomeness. With Schalk Burger, a rested and restored Bryan Habana, World’s Best Wing Ever Gio Aplon and Jean de Villiers forming the core of the Province charge, Awesomeness Overload is imminent. However, one must admit that Pat Lambie is pretty damn awesome too, so his awesomeness could negate any outstanding Province awesomeness on the day. Which will be acceptable, because then he can play for the Boks and we’ll finally have a flyhalf who can do more than quick.

2. Heavens above
Failing awesomeness, it’s also been shown that teams who point to the sky when scoring a try, or declare their undying love for the heavenly father, have direct access to major trophies (see Bulls: 2002-2004, 2009 Currie Cup and 2007, 2009 and 2010 Super 14 – very good, not quite awesome, but an excess of sky pointing and lord thanking = tournament success). Province have at least two sky pointers on the wings (one a former Bull whom the good Lord should be well acquainted with), already cementing one hand on the trophy. As far as I can tell, not many of the Sharks look to the heavens for thanks when scoring a try, preferring rather to ridiculously thank their teammates for setting up the scoring opportunity. Amateurs.

3. Province game plan
While the Sharks game plan of “blah blah blah get the ball to Pat Lambie” has been productive this year, the Province strategy of “blah blah blah get the ball to Gio” is far superior. You can tell that Allister Coetzee and Robbie Fleck have worked on this for months, possibly with years of planning, whereas John Plumtree has merely stumbled upon an exceptional talent for the rest of his team to play off.

4. Province fans are nicer...
… and so really deserve a Currie Cup trophy. People in Durban say they like rugby, but they don’t really. The much-fabled “Shark Tank” has been home to empty seats all season, with the final being the only game close to sell-out purely because Province are playing. This in a season when Newlands had a near full-house for a Bulls-Province match without any Springboks taking part, and where Newlands would have been sold out every weekend if only there weren’t so many cool things to do in Cape Town every weekend. There’s nothing to do in Durban, so come on Sharks fans, what’s your excuse?

5. Better Imports
The Sharks are the new Manchester City who are the old Chelsea. Half their squad wouldn’t be able to point out KwaZulu-Natal on a map, and this is before Meyer Bosman, Jacques-Louis Potgieter and Helgard Muller arrive next year to shore up the midfield. At least Province only swipe their players from the Cape region (Bloem is close to Kimberley which is part of the Northern Cape which forms part of the Cape region, so the likes of Duane Vermeulen and Willem de Waal are practically home grown). Proooooooooovince by 10.

2010 Currie Cup final Preview - fact by fact

Saturday's Currie Cup final between the Sharks and Western Province will be the 50th Currie Cup Final since the advent of finals in this competition in 1939.

The Sharks have played in 12 finals before, while Western Province will make their 22nd appearance in an Currie Cup Final.

The Durban side have won five titles from those finals, with the Cape team winning 12 out of 21 (which includes two shared titles).
The Facts -

- The Sharks and Western Province have competed against each other in four Currie Cup Finals, the most recent being in 2001. The Durban side were victorious in one final (1995) while Province have won three finals (1984, 2000 & 2001).

- Thirteen Sharks players (from their expected match day 22) have previous Currie Cup Final experience. Only four Western Province players in their expected match day 22 have been involved in an Currie Cup Final before this weekend.

- Fifteen of the WP players selected for Saturday’s Currie Cup Final were part of the Stormers team that conceded a 25-17 defeat against the Bulls in this year’s Super 14 Final played at the Orlando Stadium in Soweto.

- Eleven players in The Sharks’ expected squad for this Currie Cup Final have tasted victory in a final before. boasts a total of 13 Currie Cup winner medals, while three players with Western Province have been on the winning side in a final - incidentally all of them for other provinces.

- Prop Jannie du Plessis have four winning medals (three for the Free State Cheetahs in 2005, 2006 and 2007, and one for The Sharks in 2008). In the WP side, flyhalf Willem de Waal has three (all for the Free State Cheetahs in 2005, 2006 and 2007), while winger Bryan Habana ( Blue Bulls in 2009) and No 8 Duane Vermeulen ( Free State Cheetahs in 2007) have one each.

- Jannie du Plessis will be the most experienced Sharks player in terms of finals played (2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008). Stefan Terblanche, who is the only survivor of the 2000 and 2001 finals, will be playing in his fourth Currie Cup Final. He played centre in 2000, left-wing in 2001 and fullback for the Durban side during the 2008 final against the Blue Bulls.

- De Waal will be playing in his fifth Currie Cup Final after representing the Free Cheetahs in the 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007 finals. Habana will be playing in his fourth (2005, 2008 and 2009 for the Blue Bulls).

- This Currie Cup Final will be Andries Strauss’ (The Sharks) and De Waal’s ( WP) last match for their respective teams. Strauss will be going back to the Free State, where he grew up and started his career while Province’s pivot is set to continue his rugby in Italy next year.

- De Waal is the leading points’ scorer (215) in the 2010 Currie Cup competition. The flyhalf converted 34 tries and also kicked 49 penalties. He was also the top points-scorer in Currie Cup in 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007. The Sharks utility back Patrick Lambie is the second leading points’ scorer this season with 180 points (three tries, 33 conversions and 30 penalties).

- The Sharks have scored the most tries (63) in the 2010 Currie Cup and have also added the second most points by any team (508) this season. The Cape Town side have scored 62 tries (second place) and scored the most points (551) in 2010.

- Sharks winger Lwazi Mvovo (The Sharks) is second on the list of leading try-scorers this season with 12 tries. Other leading try-scorers who are likely to appear in the final are Gio Aplon (WP) who is third on the list with nine tries, Keegan Daniel (Sharks), who has scored eight and is fourth, as well as Odwa Ndungane (Sharks) with seven tries (fifth).

- Theuns Stofberg is the only player to have won the Currie Cup with three different provinces. He won titles with Free State (1976), Northern Transvaal (1979 and 1980) and Western Province (1982 and 1983). Former Springbok winger James Small is the only other player to have played in three Currie Cup Finals for three different provinces - Transvaal, Natal and WP - but he never won a title with Transvaal.

- No player has ever scored more than two tries in an Currie Cup Final. Buddy Swartz was the first to score a brace in a final - in 1970 for Griquas against Northern Transvaal. Edrich Krantz scored two Northern Transvaal against Western Province in 1980. Andre Venter added two for Free State in the 1994 final against Transvaal, Thinus Delport for the Golden Lions against the Sharks in 1999, Breyton Paulse for WP in their 2000 final victory over the Sharks and the late Ettienne Botha did it twice - in the 2003 final against the Sharks and in 2004 during the Currie Cup final against the Free State Cheetahs. Otto van Niekerk scored two tries for Transvaal in the 1939 final against WP and one for Province in the 1947 final against Transvaal. Edrich Krantz scored one try for Free State in the 1976 final against Western Province and two tries for Northern Transvaal against WP in the 1980 final. Gerbrand Grobler, the only player in history to represent his province in a Currie Cup final in rugby and cricket, scored a try for Northern Transvaal in 1990 against Natal and a try for Transvaal against Free State in 1994. AJ Venter scored a try for the Golden Lions in the 1999 final against The Sharks and a try for the Durban side in the 2003 final against the Blue Bulls. Habana can become the fifth player to achieve this feat.

- Craig Joubert, who refereed the Super 14 final earlier this year, will take charge of the 2010 Currie Cup Final for the first time in his career.

- Andre Watson, who refereed two IRB Rugby World Cup Finals, has refereed in seven Currie Cup Finals followed by Steve Strydom (six), Freek Burger (five) and Jonathan Kaplan (five). Tappe Henning was the referee in the 1995 final between The Sharks and WP while Watson was in charge of the 2000 and 2001 finals between these two teams.

Cape Town - There is a joke doing the rounds that when sports predictions cult figure Paul the Octopus died in a German aquarium this week his parting word was “Shaaaarks”.

But it seems the majority of Sport24 readers believe he was actually going to splutter “Shaaaarks … to botch it” before his passing unpleasantly intervened.

A poll we ran asked the very straight question: “Who’ll be crowned Currie Cup champions in Durban on Saturday?”

And as this was written, 2 945 respondents - around 54% - had rooted for Western Province, while the remaining 46% (or 2 503 people) preferred the home triumph.

Just how many neutrals voted is unfortunately not known: it might have been educative to learn, for instance, which way most Blue Bulls fans are leaning - if they still care about the competition this year.

But it’s a vote of confidence for Schalk Burger and company all the same, despite the disadvantage of having to achieve their first Cup win since 2001 in the hostile Shark Tank.

Perhaps readers were influenced by the outcomes of four previous finals between WP and the Sharks, with the blue-and-white-hoops prevailing on three occasions.

In round-robin meetings this year, the tally stands at 1-1, with the Sharks winning 27-16 in Durban and Province 33-21 in Cape Town.

Sharks predict a Western Province Win


Heart 104.9FM Sports Presenter Paul Snodgrass, better known as Snoddie, has turned to the sharks at the Two Oceans Aquarium in Cape Town for a prediction of the Currie Cup Final this weekend. In light of the recent death of Paul the Octopus this week, we might have found a replacement psychic shark right here in South Africa.

On Sunday October 24th, during the usual feed at the Two Oceans Aquarium, one diver wearing a Western Province rugby jersey and another wearing a Sharks rugby jersey were in the shark tank to find out which team Cape Town's sharks predict will win the Currie Cup on Saturday. Both divers held food and the sharks could predict the winner by choosing which diver to eat from.

As spectators at the Two Oceans Aquarium watched in anticipation, the sharks had chosen to eat from the diver wearing the Western Province rugby jersey. If their prediction of a Western Province win is as accurate as Paul's predictions were, remains to be seen. It is safe to say that Capetonians are hoping these sharks are right.

Shark attack: Western Province had no answer in Durban

The Sharks took a big bite out of Western Province's self esteem after thrashing their coastal rivals 30-10 to win the 2010 Currie Cup championship.

The visitors didn't know what hit them as their hosts ran in three tries to one in a dominant performance that will leave Durban celebrating a famous victory long into the night - and rightly so.

The Sharks outmuscled, outclassed and simply outplayed Western Province in every department as the men from Cape Town capitulated under the continuous intensity from the home side.

The pressure had a telling effect on Province who were their own worst enemy as referee Craig Joubert had no choice but to award the Sharks penalty after penalty, that allowed wunderkind Patrick Lambie to inflict further damage with his boot.

And when the Sharks youngster wasn't popping over three-pointers, he was doing everything else in an accomplished performance that will no doubt see him in green and gold in November.

Province got out of the starting blocks quicker than the Sharks, and were in the board with barely two minutes up on the clock. However, it was to be the last scoring act we'd see from the men in blue and white hoops until four minutes from half-time.

Instead, it was all the Sharks after Lambie first equaled the scores with a well-struck penalty near the touchline and then two quick-fire tries soon followed that ultimately left WP playing catch-up for the remainder of the game.

With Province on attack, the ball was spilled and Lambie countered with a kick up field that was hunted down by Sharks speedster Lwazi Mvovo. The winger beat opposite number Gio Aplon to the ball and then put scrum-half Charl McLeod on his inside over for the opening try of the final.

Lambie added the extras and the Sharks were in front 10-3 after seven minutes.

The Sharks' second five-pointer wasn't far away - and who else but Lambie to bring the capacity crowd to their feet with a brilliant solo effort, that saw the 20-year old shrug off several tacklers for a converted try under the posts.

Another penalty was added three minutes later from Lambie, and a 20-3 scoreline spelled trouble or Province whose pivot Willem de Waal was uncharacteristically off target with two attempts at goal.

The same couldn't be said of Lambie though, who raised the flags once more to stretch the Sharks lead out even further. And it seemed when it rained, it poured for WP after losing two of their Boks - Ricky Januarie and Juan de Jongh - to injury midway through the first half.

At last, lady luck finally shone on Province after captain Schalk Burger was awarded a try by the TMO that could have gone either way. It came after a punishing maul from the visitors, that left the Sharks Trojan defenders under a pile of bodies.

De Waal added the extras on the stroke of half-time that gave their subdued supporters something to shout about, and the 23-10 scoreline at the break some respectability.

The second half was a wee bit better for Province, in that they managed to keep the Sharks scoreless for 38 minutes.

The visitors had managed to assert more authority on their hosts, and won several kickable penalties as a result. But all were turned down by Burger for the hope of tries from a line-out and drive which blew up in the skipper's face as the Sharks denied WP on every occasion.

Panic and desperation started sinking in the Province camp, with the backline risking everything from their own tryline - and the Sharks were all too happy to watch.

With the game all but over, that man Lambie was on hand once again to rub salt into Western Province's wounds with a try at the death that sealed the deal for his team.
