View Full Version : Berlin in different look (help needed)
kabroon October 24th, 2010, 04:12 PM Hi guys,
I'm going to visit Berlin soon with my friends and I would like this trip to be in some way different. I'm looking for some "unknown" places in Berlin-Mitte to see. Not another trip with museums and this kind of stuff.
So I need your help. If you could tell me where are beautiful sights to see, interesting buildings to look at, delicious (and cheap) food to try, I will be very grateful.
Thank you in advance ;)
miau October 24th, 2010, 05:06 PM My tip is not to follow a plan but just take your time and to explore. If you want to stay in Mitte, you could try out the area near Bahnhof Friedrichstrasse and between Chausseestrasse and Rosenthaler Strasse. Also, you could walk down the Friedrichstrasse from South to North, there you have a nice cross section of the city, from the rugged Mukltikulti in Kreuzberg to the splendours of the new east Berlin around Unter den Linden. More good starting points are Bahnhof Schönhauser Alle (gentrified), Karl-Marx-Allee (interesting stalinist architecture) or Simon-Dach-Strasse (lots of bars).
Dase October 25th, 2010, 11:14 AM I second that. Go to the nighbourhoods that are of interest to you (informations are googeable and/or to be found at lonely planet and the likes) and just explore the area yourself. That usually works best to really learn to know a city, it totally worked for me when I was in other cities.
As a start, I recommend public transport stations like Schlesisches Tor, Eberswalder Straße, Rosenthaler Platz, Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz, Oranienburger Straße, Gneisenaustraße, Rathaus Neukölln oder Warscher Straße as starting points for your walks or bike tours.
kabroon October 25th, 2010, 02:49 PM sound good to me but the problem is that I will be with a group of 5-6 people, we are planning to go on 6th Dec so there will be those "xmas markets" (btw where could the best one located?) but I was thinking about places where you can see "street art" (graffiti and stuff) and this kind of things that could be interested for all of us...
Dase October 25th, 2010, 04:48 PM ^ You can explore a city talking a walk with 6 peoples as well. There is no hotspot for streetart and the likes, you can literally find it all accross the city, even though Revaler Straße with Cassiopeia in Friedrichshain and the area around Schlesisches Tor might offer some of the best foto opportunities. I don't know which "interesting things" you mean, but most likely you will find them all around any of the said public transport stations. Just be prepared to go outside of Mitte.
Regarding Christmas markets, I personally prefer the one at Kulturbrauerei and Kiezweihnacht in Friedrichshain, but any "Kiez" usually has his own one. Just regarding atmosphere, the one at Gendarmenmarkt is also pretty nice, even though it's paid entrance. Mitte Markets are usually pretty touristy and tend to have more of a fun fair feeling, with people being loud and drunken.
miau October 25th, 2010, 09:46 PM The best christmas market is in Spandau, but it is pretty far from Mitte.
6 people? To my experience it is nearly impossible to have a common sense in such a large group. Every 5 minutes or so somebody stops at a shop window, to buy some drink, close their shoes etc... prepare for a slow walk. :D Also, some of you should inform about the place where you go and be the "leader". Else you have 6 people and 6 opinions what to do next. At least I hate this. :ohno:
kabroon October 28th, 2010, 01:03 AM yeah I know it... that's why I asked about your help... do not worry we just want to spend a nice day off far away from studying. We do so every year, that's way I don't want to go to the places we have already been to but to find something new and interesting. If you have any idea feel free to share ;)
