Different sources say North Carolina has the larger film industry, while others say Florida, I'm confused. Does anyone know?

I had no idea there was much of a presence in NC at all....errr I know of some movies that could have been filmed in Florida but cant htink of them off the top of my head so jeez I am confused.

I don't know where you're from but I don't think you're from the South. Most people from here know that Wilmington is the Hollywood of the South aka Hollywood East. A LOT of stuff was filmed in Wilmington. It's most notorious for the one and only "Dawson's Creek." Btw, movies are filmed all over NC, which includes the mountains, Charlotte and Raleigh, among others.

Honestly, I think FL has a slightly larger film industry. If not, it will in the very near future. The state of FL has invested tons of money into incentives and more importantly a film school at Florida State. NC School of Arts offers a film program but it's not as good as Florida State.

I think I have to agree. Other than Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil and parts of Forrest Gump, I can't think of any other movies that have been shot in Savannah. I'm sure there are more, but I can't think of them.

Savannah is very photogenic though.

The Charlotte region is holding its own as a destination for filming movies, TV shows and commercials, even amid recent years of statewide declines in film industry revenues.

Though the region hasn't hosted a major feature film since Gwyneth Paltrow's "Shallow Hal" in 2001, the film industry's impact on the local economy has climbed in the past three years thanks to a strategy of nurturing smaller-budget independent films and TV projects, industry officials say.

The Charlotte Region Film Commission calculated $128 million in revenues from film, TV shows and commercials in the region last year, up from $122.7 million in 2002 and $121.3 million in 2001.

And one or more big-name film projects may be on the horizon for the Charlotte area, thanks to a $300,000 grant to the Charlotte film commission quietly slipped into the state budget last month by House Co-Speaker Jim Black, D-Matthews.

Beth Petty, the Charlotte film commission's director, said her agency plans to use the grant to lure a particular film project, but remained mum on the specifics. Lawmakers put no strings on how the money can be spent. The film commission has criteria on local spending and hiring that film projects must meet before they can get incentive money.

"When you spend money on this industry, you make money," said Black. "This is about jobs -- and we need all the help we can get."

Rumors of negotiations to bring big-name Hollywood productions have swirled around the community for months, particularly any time a movie with NASCAR connections is announced. Area officials are working to woo a film biography of racing legend Richard Petty, a project that could have a budget of up to $40 million, Black said. And pop star Britney Spears is reportedly developing a NASCAR-related film.

In the Carolinas and nationally, film revenues have declined since their mid-1990s peak as major studio productions flee to Canada, Eastern Europe and other overseas locations where costs are cheaper and incentives are plentiful. The most high-profile example was the recent Oscar winner "Cold Mountain," a story set in the N.C. mountains but filmed in Romania. Just one day of the film's production occurred in North Carolina.

N.C. officials are still working to tabulate the film investment in the state for 2003. But the state's 2002 tally of just under $231 million was the lowest total in 11 years, although North Carolina held onto its title of the No. 3 state for film production behind California and New York.

Wilmington, home to Screen Gems Studios, has hosted many of the state's big-name films over the last 20 years and is the current base of the WB teen drama "One Tree Hill."

South Carolina, which hosted filming of Mel Gibson's "The Patriot" and this summer's release "The Notebook," has sought to join the roster of states that offer financial incentives to filmmakers.

In a measure that has gone through the legislature and awaits the governor's signature, films with budgets of more than $250,000 would be exempt from sales tax and hotel taxes on their in-state spending; films with budgets of more than $1 million would be eligible for rebates on part of the money spent on payrolls and S.C. suppliers. Program funds come from an admissions tax on tickets sold at movie theaters, concerts and other entertainment events, said S.C. film commissioner Jeff Monks.

The N.C. Film Council is working with legislators to craft a statewide incentive plan to replace one shot down after a court challenge in early 2003, and expects action when legislators convene in January.

The Charlotte region remains attractive to independent filmmakers because of its deep base of experienced film crews, its wide range of scenery within a relatively short drive, and its high quality of life that has lured a population of filmmakers with Hollywood connections, officials say.

Several recent Charlotte-area developments indicate the region's film scene is thriving:

• A $1 million independent film, "Interwoven," aimed at portraying the lives of families affected by the demise of the textile industry, is being produced by the newly formed Textile Film Initiative LLC. The partnership is the brainchild of Joanne Hock of Charlotte, who plans to announce the cast soon.

• A video production company, Edit-on-Hudson, recently relocated to Charlotte from New York. Founder Steve Kahn got his start in MTV music videos.

• Lee Shargel of Charlotte, founder of FilmWorks LSD LLC, recently partnered with Blue Ridge Motion Pictures of Asheville with plans to produce a TV pilot and four feature films to be shot locally over the next two years. "I think we can leverage the presence of this particular filmmaker to get attention from others," said Carroll Gray, president of the Charlotte Chamber.

It all adds up to good prospects for future film investment, said Black, who added:

"The film industry is alive and well and kicking in North Carolina."

NC is like an eastern CA. In CA you have an ocean, mts. and cities [large and small] that you can use for your films. NC is the exact same way. Large cities of course not being near the size of the ones in CA but they have made it seem so [shallow hal, they took a taxi ride that made you think it was like across the city and they went three blocks].

I know part of Forrest Gump was filmed in South Carolina as well (vietnam part) around Beaufort.

Florida has been considered #2 places to be in the film industry the last time I checked.....having had the acting bug in my younger years (I also studied drama with some of the most respected college coaches / professors in the midwest) I researched what the industry trends were -- Florida or California is where the actors all flocked......it's where the jobs were!

North Carolina is second based on money spent by the film industry in the state. There's more to the film industry than just shooting a movie. Most of the work is post-production and that's what Wilmington has. Also you can put together an excellent crew of experienced professionals here. North Carolina also has an excellent independent film industry. We also have three well known film festivals in Asheville, Winston-Salem and Wilmington. Don't over look the crew and post production work. I've spent some time on the inside of the independent film industry in NC and worked as a 50/50 partner on a film made entirely in Charlotte, with professionals from Charlotte, Winston-Salem and Wilmington. We submitted it to the Asheville Film Festival late last month, where we are waiting to see if we get a showing. I'm building a very nice reel, for someone who isn't going to film school. :lol: I've had people tell me I should go to film school.

Thanks for that article, nostyle. I found another article, directly from the Office of the Governor, stating that NC's film industry is, indeed, the third in the nation. I'm wondering if FL is actually the third and NC gets ahead due to statistical quirks. It's hard for me to believe NC beats FL and I'm from NC. Then again, A LOT of stuff is filmed here.

RALEIGH – Gov. Mike Easley today announced that for the 18th consecutive year, North Carolina ranked third in the nation last year among filmmaking states based on direct revenues derived from production.

A survey by the N.C. Department of Commerce shows North Carolina's estimated $230,844,586 in direct spending statewide by the makers of movies, television shows and commercials ranked behind only California and New York during 2002.

"The film community has proven over time to be a valuable contributor to our state's economic well-being," said Easley. "Despite a dwindling domestic film market, a national recession, and increased competition from other states that have initiated aggressive financial incentives programs, North Carolina continues to be a solid performer in the industry."

In 23 years of operation, the Film Office has recruited more than 600 movies, nine network or cable television series and thousands of national TV commercials, generating production spending of more than $6 billion statewide - a return of approximately $1,100 for every dollar spent by the agency.

"The Film Office's ability to alter strategies on the run for maximum effectiveness in a marketplace given to rapid shifts in finance, creative direction and technology has allowed North Carolina to increase TV and commercial recruitment to make up for losses in film production," said N.C. Commerce Secretary Jim Fain, whose agency houses the Film Office. "Collaboration with regional film commissions and the private sector were also factors in the state's success."

The impact of "runaway" production, as Hollywood schedules more and more features in foreign countries, is reflected in the survey by statistics that show North Carolina's movie revenues down to $9,132,000 from eight features in 2002, compared to $41,550,000 from 12 films the previous year. Spending from television projects statewide was $55,500,000 (up from $34,000,000 in 2001), while spending on commercials, shorts, industrials, and support services was $166,212,586 in 2002, off slightly from the $175,058,485 posted in 2001.

Figures provided to Commerce by regional film commissions showed production spending was up in 2002 in the Western NC, Charlotte, and East Central Regions, down in the Triad, Triangle, and Wilmington Regions, while remaining static in the Northeastern NC Region.

Correct, Cold Mountain's "setting" is North Carolina, but was fimed almost exclusively in Roumania; why, cost. This is the problem N.C. is facing even with its lower cost, Canada is getting more and more films that would have been in N.C.

By the way, an aside, recall the filem Message in a Bottle with Kevin Costner and Paul Newman. The setting is NC's Outer Banks, but was filmed in Maine. Can you imagine; Miane has a rocky coast mostly, so ...?

I know filming is done in Toronto, especially when they want a faux New York, but I didn't know they filmed that much.

I think you're right. Florida is going to catch up, tho. It's investing a lot of movie to develop it's film indusry.

Some films from the top of my head shot in Florida, "Hot Stuff" with Burt Reynolds and the "Porky's" series.

Other recent Florida films include Bad Boys 1 & 2, The Punisher, and Too Fast Too Furious.

For those who don't know, WB's One Tree Hill (http://thewb.com/Shows/Show/0%2C7353%2C||1490%2C00.html) is filmed in Wilmington.

I havent heard of much of a film industry in NC. Lots of movies have been filmed in Florida and Texas and the Austin area has seen lots of recent movies filmed there. Austin is just behind New York and LA. Most of the movies you thought were filmed in California or the west were filmed in the Austin area. Many years ago airplane hangers were converted into filming studios and today film companies and Austin itself are investing millions into State of the art studios. Film production in Austin has increased tenfold over the past decade, with many of the best in the business returning for second, third or fourth projects. For the past seven years, MovieMaker magazine has named Austin among the top moviemaking cities in the country. In 2004, the Capital City topped the list of "Top 10 Cities for Moviemakers" and took the #3 spot this year, just behind New York City and Philadelphia.
