London, UK
HEIGHT: 104m
FLOORS: 26
COMPLETION: 1976 (reclad, 1995)
ARCHITECT: GMW Architects
DEVELOPER: Hammerson
Notes:
99 Bishopsgate stands near Liverpool Street station, on one of the busiest junctions in the City. It is 104 metres tall and has 26 floors. Completed in 1976, it was the London headquarters of Hongkong Bank, until it was bombed by the IRA in 1993 together with neighbouring Tower 42. Following an extensive refurbishment, it was re-opened in 1995 as a multi-let office building. When it was built, it had the fastest lifts (elevators) of any building in Europe.

nick_taylor August 10th, 2004, 04:58 PM The thing that wins it for me is the cladding - absolute quality cladding - by far the best midrise in the UK :) - 9
RafflesCity August 11th, 2004, 03:13 PM 7.5/10
It does look smart and complements Tower42 well. I like those verticals that go the entire height of the building. Being where it is, it does look taller than its real height.
Monkey August 14th, 2004, 08:06 PM 9/10.
I love this building - the cladding is even better than SwissRe!
These photos are nice, but they don't really do it justice. For those who've never seen it in real life, trust me on this, you have to actually go and see it to appreciate just how 'clean' and 'fresh' and shiny the tower looks. They did an amazing job of renovating it. If only the building was another fifty metres higher or so, then it would have more of an impact on the skyline. As it is, it's tucked away behind Tower 42 and SwissRe in most views. When all the new towers come along (110 Bishopsgate, Minerva, etc), it will have even less presence on the skyline, but will still impress at street level.
This, in my opinion, is one of the most underrated buildings in London, if not the UK. People go on about CentrePoint in the west end (which is very similar in height), but I would say 99 Bishopsgate is far better, simply because the cladding is so stunning.
ferge August 27th, 2004, 02:32 AM It is a stunning building for the UK, looks huge too! Beautiful cladding and so nice to have this, t42 and swiss re that all look clean and modern, unlike some of its neighbouring towers which are grimey and gritty..
if only we had more towers like this!
Accura4Matalan August 30th, 2004, 08:15 PM 7/10. I dont like the shape but the cladding is superb.

JDRS March 20th, 2005, 07:21 PM The cladding on this is great and I like the shape. The base is also very good but my only critiscism is that it isn't tall enough.
8.5/10
Monkey March 22nd, 2005, 11:42 PM The huge IRA bomb attack which nearly destroyed the building, along with neighbouring Tower 42
and many other buildings in the financial district:

Gherkin June 27th, 2005, 03:26 PM Will look great once (if) the Heron tower is built! Would also look better if it was a 500 footer, but can't complain

Erebus555 June 18th, 2006, 08:02 PM Unusual shape but nothing makes it different. It looks the same all the way up with the odd break from a vent. The glass effect is good though. It carries on upwards past the roof for a short while. 6/10

onZikisAyas July 27th, 2006, 04:56 AM It was promising, untill you slowly start to look up, in which case, you'll start wondering where the rest of it is.
I drive past bishops gate nearly every day, and have always been wondering whether the computer who built it run out of money.
5/10 - 5 because, half of the building is missing.
