Under construction in Dadar on what previously used to be the site of Kohinoor Mills #3, Kohinoor Square will be a major mark on the Mumbai skyline, towering 203m over the city. The project was designed by gkkworks (http://www.gkkworks.com/site_map.php).

gkkworks won a design competition for this mixed-use commercial high rise tower in Mumbai, India. The source of inspiration for this design concept is the meaning of the name Kohinoor: mountain of light. Kohinoor is also the name of the largest diamond in the world. The diamond is the ultimate gemstone. It is the hardest substance found in nature, yet the most transparent, with a long history in India. The tower’s design objectives challenge the typical glass office building by the abstract pattern created by diamond geometry and triangulation. The triangular shapes are layered onto the building’s mass and facades, through clearly defined planes and opposites: void and solid, opacity and transparency. The result is a building design that not only has symbolic meaning but creates a unique and powerful presence worthy of the Kohinoor name.

I have a question - there are some mills adjacent (to the north) of the project site! Are those up for some kind of redevelopment ? They're a major eyesore!

Awesome, I like that were seeing more commercial skyscrapers in the Dadar area, such as this and Ruby Mills. It will help to spread out the CBD to create a sort of Midtown area.

Wonder how many buildings in an area the size of Parel or Dadar does it take to get a Tokyo/Manhattan/Dubai Critical Mass density appearance?

Kohinoor Square is being designed as an iconic commercial complex in Dadar, quite literally in the heart of Mumbai.
When completed, the multi-building project, punctuated by two towers a 201m diamond-shaped iconic tower and its 117m fraternal twin tower- will be the most striking and innovative structure in Mumbai

Hopefully they design this "fraternal" tower with some measure of aesthetic respect.

meanwhile, some tidbits on the towers' structure and facade:

Kohinoor Square (http://www.thorntontomasetti.com/projects/kohinoor_square)
Mumbai, India

Thornton Tomasetti is providing structural engineering design and façade consulting services for these twin commercial office towers. The taller tower, at 50 stories, will be one of India’s tallest office buildings. The structure comprises a concrete core and post-tensioned concrete slab and spandrel beams. The tower structure and shaping was based on extensive wind load studies. The façade consists of faceted unitized aluminum curtain walls with provisions for ‘double facades’ on portions of the tower. The podium features custom point-supported glazing on specialty steel trusses.

The project is leading technological breakthroughs for Indian construction practices in structural design, life safety code concepts and sustainability with LEED Gold certification—part of the Indian Green Building Council’s green building rating system—as the goal. The project’s design concept is influenced by a diamond scheme (Kohinoor is the name of the largest known diamond in the world). Construction is scheduled for completion in 2012.

For the tower's design competition, Colin Gabriel Montoute (http://www.cgmontoute.com/), an architect from NY designed a bunch of different towers. I think he pitched these for FxFowle.

I am not sure if this has been posted earlier,

Kohinoor Square
Mumbai, India
Construction is underway on two commercial towers at Kohinoor Square. We are providing structural design and façade consulting services for architect gkkworks. At 50 stories, one of the towers will be among India’s tallest office buildings. The structure comprises a concrete core and post-tensioned concrete slab and spandrel beams. The façade consists of faceted unitized aluminum curtain walls with provisions for double façades on portions of the tower. The towers are linked by a podium with a façade of custom point-supported glazing on specialty steel trusses.

Kohinoor Mills + Ruby tower will be 2 shining beacons in the heart of Mumbai very soon but i will be very concerned with the traffic chaos these 2 buildings will create considering the ShivajiPark--Plaza road connecting the 2 buildings is already one of the most congested in peak hours.

I dread to go to Dadar/Plaza area these days.

A few different angles. Btw, I'm pretty sure the smoky surface of the glass is a plastic protective cover, as someone mentioned earlier. I think I saw one pane where the cover was peeling off, and one could see the glossy, shiny reflective surface underneath.

Thanks for the pics.
I know this part of Dadar/Shivaji quite well. I used to go there very often at some point of my life. It's really amazing to observe the great changes that have taken place here.

Passing it last week, I felt as if the cladding looked different....nicer somehow. Then, yesterday, which was a spectacularly clear day, I was travelling on the sea-link and from the Bandra end, the glass looked AMAZING. Like a dark blue mirror reflecting the surrounding buildings and sunlight perfectly. And today early morning, while travelling southwards on the WR, I looked up at it and once again, stunning reflection of the rising sun.

Does anyone know if they have removed the protective coating from the glass or something? It's looking beautiful!

What's that scrawny little building popping up right in front of the Ruby? Definitely not a commercial one, but you do get a good comparo of the size difference. And yes, we were elated with the cladding on Ruby, but the same on Kohinoor is going to spellbind us when it's over with!
