Triest is a city in Slovenia;)
Or at least, should be.
Italy can also argue that the Julian Alps, Istria and the Dalmatian Coast should also be part of Italy. Not to mention Haute Savoy, Nice and Corsica
I voted for Trieste coz Greece has the Olympics, Spain had the Olympics in 1992 and also cos Trieste is a EU city with easy access and is the port for Slovenia and Austria :) Winter Olympics (excluded)

Someone is voting here for Trieste too many times. This is what is going to happen in reality. Italians will try to bribe.
There is definetely one thing in common that all three cities are nice but not important as their capitals. Whoever gets it gets an economic boost or a big loss. Athens, Rome, Madrid can attract more visitors and investments without silly expos.

If Sevilla hosted an expo some years ago then there is no chance for Spain again. Unless you have real close friends to the committee. If anything like this happen we will go to the European court.

I voted for Trieste coz Greece has the Olympics, Spain had the Olympics in 1992 and also cos Trieste is a EU city with easy access and is the port for Slovenia and Austria :) Winter Olympics (excluded)
Actually, Slovenia has its own major port of Koper (Capodistria) that competes with Trieste for the Austrian market.
My city:Trieste!!!!!TRIESTE IS TOTALLY ITALIAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If you live in Trieste, you should realize that the city and -- to a greater extent -- its suburbs have a significant and historic Slovenian population. Therefore, the city is most definitely not "totaly Italian", just as many coastal Slovenian towns such as Izola (Isola) and Piran (Pirano) aren't "totally Slovenian" -- they have a significant and historic Italian minority.

BTW, Trieste is full of Croatian & Slovenian speaking Italians that Tito's communists kicked out of Yugoslavia after 1945. Thats why Trieste is also bi-lingual in Italian, Slovenian-Croatian. My vote goes to Trieste for the Expo, its time this city came back into the spot light.

Forza Trieste!
This is a very cool city on the Adriatic coast. Marshal Tito could have pressured Italians a bit more to return the City to Slovenia but that's allright - at least Istria and Rijeka (Fiume) were returned to the motherland after the WWII!

My vote of course is for the city where I was born: Zaragoza. The theme is very interesting and also the way it's focused. Anyway independently of the success of the expo, the winner city will improve itself a lot.
The final votation is in 35 days!

Just one word: TRIESTE - here you are
http://www.meteomagazine.net/modules/news/article.php?storyid=294
It's a meteorological Forum but obviously you can see also some shots of the City. Especially at page 4. Note: the PHOTO-REPORTAGE HAS GOT ALSO A FULL ENGLISH VERSION, next to the Italian one!!!
I hope U'll enjoy it! It's quite long - almost a poem - but I think it's worth it!
You'll find more reportages at
http://www.meteomagazine.net/userinfo.php?uid=9
in a list that appears under "Notizie".
Note: I'm going to compose other articles and sections in English. For now we're seeing the lie of the land, i.e. seeing how it works in English (the site's been opened a few weex ago). Other articles will show more architecture/buildings/streets pictures of Trieste.
In particular, I'm preparing two snowy reportages with pictures downtown taken during a great snowfall on 7-8-9-10 January 2003 and on another happened on 28-29 February this year.
From the main article I quoted you, you can see that Trieste is a unique place: between the Mediterranean and the Alps, with a white slopy Riviera and Uplands just nearby; with cold winds and snowy scenes but also hot air from the South...
And an extraordinary history: first Roman, then under Aquileia and Venice, then Austria (the Habsburgs, who built up a magnificent Castle on the seaside), then Italy, then Yugoslavia, then NewZealanders/Americans/Britons, then Italy again... It's the most mitteleuropean (Alpe-Adria rulez!) City in all Southern Europe, less than 500 km from Vienna, and Prague/Budapest/etc. are here...
I introduce myself quickly: sono Italiano ma di origine Polacca (I also love Wroclaw and the Klodzko/Sudete Uplands south of that city, where I was born)! E sono innamorato di Trieste dopo aver viaggiato parekkio il mondo, that means: I'm in love with Trieste after strolling around the world for sometime!
Ciao from Trieste, see you soon with skyline/downtown photos ^___^

What is that building? I've been to Trieste several times in the last few months, and I saw it a few times, but I have yet to find out what it serves for.
By the way, I voted for Trieste. ;)
That's Trieste's new, HUGE, swimming-pool-centre. It has several 50m pools and thousands of places for the public.
Trieste won, a few days ago, the right to organize next year's European 25m Championship! That's the first time for Italy: and the new "Polo Natatorio" structure will be perfect for that. I have to underline that there is another gigantic (public) pool not far from the new one (I think they'll turn it into a spa-resort or something like that).
Anyway, Trieste is expanding, developing quite quickly, to reach its 1700&1800 splendor...
Let's write it in my three mothertongues (yep, in my baby- and child-hood I grew up learning and speaking three languages at once...)
I hope Trieste'll win the 2008 Expo!
Spero che Trieste vinca l'Expo 2008!
Mam nadzieje, ze Triest wygra Expo 2008!
Ciao!
