nauportus90 October 30th, 2010, 11:47 PM Wow, these pics are amazing! But I kind of doubt that Genoa has "the biggest historical center in Europe"! If the term "historical" refers to medieval buildings, then I'm sure there are cities with larger medieval cores preserved (Venice, for instance)!

Genoa was surely the biggest historical center. A lot of old buildings was destroyed during the bombing of the city in the Second War and other was demolished due to property speculation :ohno:

icehot November 25th, 2010, 10:46 AM Genoa has some beautiful architecture, but it desperately needs major clean up and renovation - that was my impression of the city anyway
balthazar November 25th, 2010, 11:34 AM ^^You are quite right, even if i don't find the situation so "desperate". Genoa has a big historic heritage (probably not commonly known), from the middle ages and from the 16th - 17th century (mannerism and baroque) in particular. A lot of monuments are well kept, others need more restoration (like a lot of medieval houses of the old town) but it is a really interesting town even as it is now. Then i think it is a beautiful town also outside the historical center but it's not theme for this topic.
something else from middle ages:
San Donato bell tower

an exemple of restoration needed (i don't know the age of this), the old town is full of buildings like this:

balthazar December 29th, 2010, 01:26 PM ... (i don't know the age of this), the old town is full of buildings like this:
http://i55.tinypic.com/4dz7d.jpg
i have found some informations: this "adoration of the magi" is effectively a renaissance work of around 1457 AD, attributed to the sculptor Giovanni Gaggini
http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giovanni_Gaggini.
balthazar December 30th, 2010, 11:30 AM http://i54.tinypic.com/25gfmoo.jpg
^^this city gate is called "Porta dei Vacca". It takes its name from the Vacchero family, once owner of many buidings in this part of the town.
Near here, along Via del Campo, you can find a fountain
http://i53.tinypic.com/9bhli8.jpg
Almost hidden by this fountain there's a little square, called Piazza Vacchero, with this pillar:
http://www.fosca.unige.it/gewiki/images/0/07/ColonnaInfame1.jpg
http://www.fosca.unige.it
http://www.fosca.unige.it/gewiki/images/7/79/ColonnaInfame2.jpg
http://www.fosca.unige.it
This is the column of infamy (in italian "colonna infame") of Julius Caesar Vacchero, a noble who conspired with the duke of Savoy against the Republic of Genoa in 1628.
Where now is this square there was his house, which was demolished as a part of the punishment described on the column itself.
The inscription says something like: "For the infamous memory of Julius Caesar Vacchero, most wicked man, who conspired against Republic. Cut off his head, confiscated his possessions, exiled his sons and demolished his house, he paid the right penalty".
Some decades later the Vacchero family was allowed to build the fountain to partially hide the column.

Ribarca December 31st, 2010, 07:45 PM Awesome city! I really want to visit this city. My idea is to take the ferry from Barcelona.
The architecture looks amazing. The only drawback are those awful Baroque creations.
I would love to photograph the city. Would you recommend any vantage points from the hills or perhaps a certain hotel with views on the roofs.
balthazar December 31st, 2010, 08:34 PM ^^I don't know about hotels, but a classic Belvedere on the old town is that of Castelletto

Moreover in Genoa there are to see at least Via XX Settembre, Via Assarotti, Piazza Vittoria and various places wich don't belong to the old town.

Sorry, mate (I'm assuming you are from ME from your location).
My "nonna" and his beloved 60 year-married husband (my grandfather) worked up to 60 hours a day to their bones so that the family (my parents' generation) would escape poverty and all the things associated with it. No glamour on wasting your life playing calcio on streets or wasting your time doing manual laundry when machines do that for you ;)
Traditions are usually rotten and low-class anyway. Glad to see nobody of my age care about that stuff except the nostalgic. But that is off-topic.
=====================
Parts of the old quarters of Genova have extremely narrow streets. Less than 2m wide, that is it. It makes buildings extremely uncomfortable for almost no privacy from windows and, in lower floors, no direct sunlight anytime of the day.
As a result, it is not a typical historical quarter where gentrification and retrofitting would be enough to give the place a better look. It has been dominated by poor inhabitants which don't care much about their buildings, and sometimes are hostile to projects to clean up the area.
If they succeed getting rid of the worst elements there, I'm sure that as a large-scale architectural museum or monument-esque neighborhood it will make an awesome place, if inhabitants leave for most of it.
I have an example here on Google Street View (http://g.co/maps/d3x8y) (you can navigate to areas around it). That area is just unsafe/unhealthy for modern living. They could make it a museum with controlled environments of the whole place, or demolish part of the buildings to create wider streets (I'm not even talking about making them car-accessible, just provide room for air and sunlight to get on the windows).

WTF?
Are you a marxist or something?
Part of whats so great about Italy is the fact that they HAVEN'T lost their sense of traditions and culture despite increasing their standard of living.
I mean, sure, you can be rootless, ultra-modernistic, depressed and liberal like northwest Germany, the Netherlands or Scandinavia...
Or you can be catholic, traditional, proud of your culture and your heritage.
You seriously sound like either a marxist or an eastern block person un-sure of himself, only interested in what "modern life" has to offer.
Northern Italy and the countries around the alps are seriously the best part of Europe.
The mixture of traditionalism/catholic conservatism and work ethic, inovationalism and organizational skills is just staggering.
Sorry for ranting, but I cant stand people that are embarassed by their heritage and worship the god of modernism.

If he ruled the world I think everything build was glass and steel, not that I hate New York, Brasilia and Seattle or something like those three cities but there also have to be some 'old' stuff, which remind the generations of now/future of the generations before them, how they lived and learn from the passed...
What is wrong with hanging your clothes at lines above streets, alley's et cetera? That gives in my opinion many streets an extra character. It's a natural way and it doens't give any extra problems for the ozon layer ;) Not everything has to be modern, some traditional stuff doesn't always hurt someone.....
tommolo February 25th, 2012, 01:48 PM Yeah that's the spirit! In clothing we have now widened our horizon: once there was only classic dresses, and now there is a very cheap and comfortable sporty clothing I wear all the day all the days, but when comes the occasion, I can dress elegant too, and no one tells me I'm a retrograd or a nostalgic just because I'm all dressed up classically. But in acrhitecture that simple fact is very struggled: people just proceeded with a substitution of ALL the classic with ALL modern. But that's very shortminded since every progress should be a widening of choices, not a simple substitution of them removing completely what's past. I want to have, like I have in clothes, the full freedom in architecture to choice if that day I want to go classical or go sporty! ;)

Madrid's historical center is probably not as old as the Genoa's one, but it's at least one of the biggest historical centers in the world, the biggest in Spain with Seville.
Annibale April 9th, 2012, 12:56 AM As far as i know this statement that Genoa has the largest historical center is due to the fact that the geography of the city made it cheaper to build the walls in an outer position than the actual limit of the city in the time the walls were built (xvi century i guess). So that the area anclosed by the walls is larger than the real dimension of the historical urban fabric.
balthazar April 9th, 2012, 01:57 PM ^^No, i am sure. I said various times that in Genoa the historic center is well defined and it's just the so called "cittā vecchia". It's one of the very few big historic center in europe where almost every one building has signs of its medieval origin. Every old, poor looking house in the alleys has some relief, some gothic arch, some window, that shows how ancient is.
From this comes the misunderstanding: for that period i think just Venice in Europe can be so wide and preserved (but I am not sure about this, maybe there are other cities).
Anyway noone ever considers Genoese historic center as the area enclosed by the system of walls on the hills. One thing is the old town, another the walls and forts of Genoa.
there are two "urban legends" about Genoa: one about the "biggest old town"..., one about the "longest walls"..... I don't know what is true, but don't mix them.

Come on! You spaniards built the whole city yesterday and today already got a historical center? You only fool yourself!
Madrid has been tiny and modest for the most part in its history. It became a really major city almost in the XIX century. It's historically impossible it has a big historical center.

I think you missed the point here.
Maps doesn't prove anything. I can show you a map of the City in London made before the great fire and one from afterwards and you'll realize the outline remained almost the same. Some streets were widened, but the original streets lines didn't change at all. What really changed were the buildings.
The same happens to Madrid. Actually, most of thoses buildings shown on the map above are not from the XVII century, as you're trying to imply, but from the XIX period. Therefore, the much claimed Spain's biggest historical center, in reality, is not so storical.
My point is: a little more than a hundred years old center is not enough yet to be called storical, especially taking into account the european standards.
Kaetzar April 11th, 2012, 12:36 PM Actually, most of thoses buildings shown on the map above are not from the XVII century, as you're trying to imply, but from the XIX period. Therefore, the much claimed Spain's biggest historical center, in reality, is not so storical.
I understand your point but I think that you are wrong with your concepts becouse a lot of these buildings are really from XVII century. Obviously, other builthings are from earlier and later centuries.
Madrid has been tiny and modest for the most part in its history. It became a really major city almost in the XIX century. It's historically impossible it has a big historical center.
Almost all the capital cities of Europe became big cities in the XIX century (Rome, Paris, Berlin, Amsterdam, etc.). But they have huge historical center as Madrid has.
Madrid has preserved almost all its historic buildings, and only a few were destroyed during napoleonic war. Residential buildings were renovated, as the same as all historical centers, including the oldest part Genoa (nobody live in medieval houses but in houses of a one or two centuries ago).
The most important buildings in the historical center, that you can see in dark colored building of Madrid, have been mostly preserved and used for other things, like museums (Reina Sofia, Prado and so on):

Historical center of Madrid has beautiful twentieth century buildings but have been conserved all the its old historical buildings (except a few ones for war).
tommolo April 11th, 2012, 01:21 PM I agree that Madrid has an interesting historical center, even if actually historical center means that people still lives in middle age houses, modernized and everything, but still the same...in Genoa, Rome, Prague and Sevilla is like that ;)
balthazar April 11th, 2012, 01:30 PM Residential buildings were renovated, as the same as all historical centers, including the oldest part Genoa (nobody live in medieval houses but in houses of a one or two centuries ago).

mmm? about this point, what's peculiar of Genoa is that probably the majority of common houses in the old town have been just renovated but never rebuilt since the middle ages.

Most of the walls, most of the stones, are there since that time.
So yes, people live in medieval houses which had some make up.
Every other city in Italy has some house of this kind, but not so many.
(it's not a good image but i don't find a better one on flickr, sorry :D )
Kaetzar April 11th, 2012, 01:53 PM Oh yes! some old residential building in Genoa have suffered a makeup, like in other cities of Italy or in Madrid. Maybe Genoa has conserved better its ancient residential building than others cities, probably.
I visited Genoa two years ago. I swear that I was in love with the city (it's difficult to discribe to me but I thougt that I was walking in other world, all seem special to me).
The mediaval part of Genoa has very narrow streets but very tall buildings (four or five stories). These buildings do not look very old (http://maps.google.es/maps?q=genova&ie=UTF8&ll=44.408324,8.930002&spn=0.002939,0.006968&hnear=G%C3%A9nova,+Liguria,+Italia&gl=es&t=h&z=18&layer=c&cbll=44.408293,8.930076&panoid=b69I59qsz_DagwghuHSCeQ&cbp=12,290.9,,0,-21.8) but i believe you when you say that thare are many ancient residential building in Genoa.
I agree that Madrid has an interesting historical center, even if actually historical center means that people still lives in middle age houses, modernized and everything, but still the same...in Genoa, Rome, Prague and Sevilla is like that ;)
Yes, that basically is that I think :)
tommolo April 11th, 2012, 02:06 PM yes the fact is that in genoa the pintoresque narrow street does not let you look properly at the palaces, the same thing is for Naples for examples, but when you look at those building carefully, and visit the palaces on the inside, you get to know that they are ancient palaces, really ;)

Formerly "strada nuova". Palaces built in the late 16th century. Mainly mannerism and early baroque style.

Had some of my best holidays in Italy.
Caustic April 23rd, 2012, 07:12 PM As far as i know this statement that Genoa has the largest historical center is due to the fact that the geography of the city made it cheaper to build the walls in an outer position than the actual limit of the city in the time the walls were built (xvi century i guess). So that the area anclosed by the walls is larger than the real dimension of the historical urban fabric.
The walls were built on the mountain ridges behind the city so I guess it was for strategic reasons rather than economic. Just guessing...

tommolo May 23rd, 2012, 06:48 PM of course there is, but no one goes to visit it since the old town are the most beautiful parts in the cities when they still are present ;)
Anyway, here you are. wow.
