great
i hated that massive carpark
actually all that part of town looked shit and cut of from the main part of the city
also do you have any renderings, cause thats one big mumma of a site, and should be filled with several towers
also the ugly escalator to the transit centre needs to go
and also the foodhall area of the trasit centre needs doing up
the roma parklands looked nice but

That Suncorp Metway building with the clock on the top is the ugliest building. That whole side is just concrete and when you are standing at the bottom looking up it looks like the concrete just never stops.

Who in their right mind would design a building where one whole side is concrete. I understand it if another building was going to block the facade, there would be no use to build a facade with detail. But the FACES THE ROAD.

Nice photo, construction is coming along nicely there. It would be so great to see a big tower on that site in the future.

Hey, at least the building has a clock so we know what time the photo was taken! ;)

Seriously though, I hate digital clocks on towers!

Does anyone have a rendering of the Magistrates Court? I don't think I've seen it.

Just to refresh everybody's memory......here are the renderings posted originally in the approved / proposed section, the architects are COX Rayner with Ainsley Bell Murchison:
http://www.justice.qld.gov.au/news/images/romast.jpg
http://www.justice.qld.gov.au/news/images/georgeturbot.jpg
http://www.justice.qld.gov.au/news/images/longtitude.jpg

I don't mind it.......pretty clean design, similar in many ways to the 10 year old commonwealth law courts on North Quay, but a bit sharper looking, nice to see some attention to the roof on one of these things:)

My only objection to the design is another bloody pedestrian bridge over roma street (it is cut off in the Roma Street illustration - the pedestrian plaza that ends suddenly on the right side of the pic, but was a full bridge on the model of the Georgian display).......it seems to be a very narrow minded solution to the rest of Queensland Place masterplan (obvoiusly, not much thought has gone into how the rest of the site relates to this - but maybe Brisbane2 can enlighten us??). It is a very 1960's type solution. I would prefer to see a full plaza built out over the road, or pedestrianize roma street more and make it a decent street with lots of crossing opportunities, instead of a service road / freeway that it is at the moment

Bring on the rest of Queensland Place!!!!!!!!

The back of the MLC building is way fuglier than that Suncorp building.
Concrete, nothing more, nothing less.

wow that takes up most the site

though it looks okay, its abit of a waste of such a big site....

well there be another development on the tip of the site near roma station ?

Density Density Density!!!

The way Brisbane is going with all these medium rise buildings throughout the city and suburbs we are going to end up looking like Tokyo or Sao Paulo.

I am pretty sure the magistrates building itself only takes up about 1/3 of the site area......it is not a huge building

BrizzyChris
November 26th, 2002, 10:38 AM
Actually I remember reading it would actually only take up 25% of the site. It would be nice if Chrisaus knew what he was talking about before he blurted out his statement.s

Why is the site called "Queensland Place"? Was there a tower proposed there years ago that was going to be called Queensland Place or was there a building previously there that was called Queensland Place?

Also, what is going to happen to the old magistrates courts building once this new one is complete? Will it be put to use or be cleared and put up for sale for a potential site for a future scraper?

JayT
November 26th, 2002, 01:54 PM
I believe there were origionally Markets on the site similar the Queen Vic markets in Melbourne. If you look at old pictures you can see the buildings.

Personally I would rather the markets were still there - they are in Rocklea now.

Thanks JayT for so consistantly putting pictures of Brisbane onto this forum. For a Brisbane boy living overseas it's really great to keep up to date with what is going on. I appreciate it!

I think the Clock tower on the old SGIO is great, but then I like the MLC weather thing as well. There also used to be a big digital clock near the Customs House that you could see along the length of Queens St (pre-Mall days).

Yeah Thanks so much JayT you put so many great pictures on this forum its just so great.....

Anyway hopefully something tall get proposed for Qld Place in a couple of years. It's such a huge site, hopefully its mixed use or office, I would hate another 40-storey residential tower going up here. I'm over residential 40-storey towers.

Yes it would. And of course sink Turbot and Anne Streets and demolish everything on that block except the State Law Building (Gotham City) - Then we could have a vista to city hall too.

this is an early proposal for the roma street forum / qld place site....this is about 3 years old I think, and shows the law courts development in a different location, but it does show that they once had a very grand plan for the area

still waiting to see what the government is actually thinking about here!!

If the courts only take 25% of the site thouhg, what is to be done with the rest...until development later on (hopefully some huge soaring tower)

Roma Street Parklands have been open for about three years now. Queen Elizabeth visited there in 2001

Its a pretty good parkland, holds itself together well, although its connections to the urban fabric are woeful. Its a hard task to reach them

Is anyone wondering why there are so many separate circulation cores in the building?

Its because in court buildings there has to be three totally independant circulation systems. One for court staff, one for the public and one for the alleged criminals. Obviously to avoid any potential trouble caused by the chance meeting of perpetrators and victims in the same lift or corridor.

What an absolute waste of a great site! I think a park would have been better use. What is the obsession in Brisbane with building Toowoomba grade buildings in the CBD?

Danubis
September 20th, 2003, 03:51 PM
i dont mind the design of the building, and quite like the idea of creating a 'legal precinct' on the western edge of the cbd... there are a few great sites left in this area for 150m' ish buildings, so has great potential of what is yet to come... the gorgian would have complemented the area great - ie state law building, hopefully this will be the sort of standard to expect in the future...

Are the courts going to be the only building in the traingle, or are there still development places left? Maybe the end bit will become a park?

Almost finished. Does anyone know whats happening with the site across the block from this on George street? I think they were going to build the 'Georgian' a few years back and that got canned, Then i think they were going to do some other development, I think that got canned as well. Whats happening with that site? I havent been in bris for a couple of years now so I dont have any clue.

@andy77aus

I posted this two weeks ago in the Brisbane News thread:

Today's City News reports that Ross Neilson Properties are considering options for the old Georgian site. Could include one or two towers on the George Street side with ground level retail and offices or units. Expected total value is $150 million and decision will be made in the next 12 months (!)

They have put the back half of the 5000 square metre block on the market and are expecting its river views will attract a residential developer.

andy77aus
May 14th, 2004, 06:14 AM
Sounds good, I think 2 towers is the way to go, Its quite a big site and they could maximise profits that way. Its just a question of how much height 150 million can buy?
