Westin Peachtree November 22nd, 2002, 07:57 AM Westin Peachtree Plaza
Atlanta, USA
HEIGHT: 220m/723 feet
FLOORS: 73 floors
COMPLETION: 1976
ARCHITECT: John Portman & Associates
- Tallest hotel in the world when completed in 1976.
- Tallest hotel in the United States.
- Tallest hotel in the Western Hemisphere.
- One of the top 10 tallest hotels in the world.
- It has 2 360 degree revolving restaurants at the top and a public obervation deck.
This crystalline urban context, which dominates all else, marks the commercial center of Atlanta. The introverted plinth, out of which the hotel rises, establishes a clear boundary between the building and its surroundings. There is now a new connecting level in the upper section of the plinth, where shopping malls create links with the lower levels. The Peachtree Plaza Hotel stands for a hotel conception that aims to create an urban microcosm within the hotel itself; it contains conference rooms, bars, shops, a variety of restaurants and large public atriums - a celebration of hotel life for the guests.

Westin Peachtree November 22nd, 2002, 08:02 AM I am a junky for buildings like this! Hint my name....I am in love with this building! For height, style, and impact on the skyline....the Westin Peachtree gets a 10!!!
JacobRit November 22nd, 2002, 01:39 PM i had brekkie at the top of this tower.... its great so it gets 9
RafflesCity November 22nd, 2002, 08:42 PM 7.5/10
Nice, sleek and slim.
SteelCity32 November 22nd, 2002, 09:53 PM Very sleek! I like it. Very futuristic. 9/10
De Snor November 22nd, 2002, 11:06 PM Atlanta's finnest ! a 9 :)
AG November 23rd, 2002, 03:03 AM Nice facade, but even though the shape is not a box, it still doesn't do much for me, since there are almost no angles on this one.
7/10
Sunflower November 23rd, 2002, 10:57 PM I love this tower :)
8.5/10
TYW November 24th, 2002, 10:44 AM 8.5/10
wonderful!!
SUNNI December 3rd, 2002, 10:17 AM one of my fav buildings in Simcity... 10
DamienK December 3rd, 2002, 01:07 PM One of the best to come from the 70s, while other towers were just boring concrete boxes. 9/10
Caledon1981 December 3rd, 2002, 09:40 PM very innovative for its time. . but wish BofA was built closer to it;) 8.5/10
DaninTO December 3rd, 2002, 11:07 PM I agree, better than other buildings of its time. 8.5/10
heirloom December 5th, 2002, 10:45 PM 8/10
excellent design for a building built in 1976. sleek and stylish.
Bob di Gills December 5th, 2002, 10:46 PM wow...nice
8/10
cabasse December 6th, 2002, 09:39 PM beautiful in it's simplicity. still not my favorite in atlanta, but i still like it. the darker coloured ring for the top 3 floors makes it look even more futuristic IMO.
7/10

scottythebody December 6th, 2002, 11:57 PM This building makes me thing "80's" even though it was built in the 70's. I love it's all-glass and ring-around-the-top look. The Sundial up top (where you can have a drink) is hellaciously expensive, but provides a breathtaking view on a clear day.
This building, along with a couple more, defines the atlanta skyline for me. It's street-level is a series of plazas and concourses complete with street-level retail, which I really appreciate compared to a lot of other buildings in Atlanta, which are vast wastelands and parking garages at street level.
Bobdreamz December 7th, 2002, 03:40 AM one of my all time favorites...absolutely amazing for it's time and I quickly became a John Portman fan..it's sleek, tall, round & cladded in glass..a landmark for Atlanta....9.5/10!
Buck December 7th, 2002, 11:10 PM 9.5
skyway December 10th, 2002, 08:17 PM wow, what a great tower!

RafflesCity December 12th, 2002, 05:42 AM That is a great pic!
I love such pics that show people interacting within the confines of a skyscraper with fantastic views and height outside the windows - adds a human scale to these structures:)
Liz L December 13th, 2002, 12:33 AM 7/10 0 it's slim enough to have good height and the glass facade catches the light well.
On the other hand, it owuld have used a few set backs to give it even better height, and to make it less initimidating from teh street...And I'm not ssure about the base or the flat roof with that one wilmpy little antenna...
SeeMacau December 31st, 2002, 01:20 AM I like this building
It's in my top 10 favouite building
9/10
Wu-Gambino December 31st, 2002, 08:19 PM 8/10
Great, but not as neat as RenCen.
Westin Peachtree January 10th, 2003, 04:36 AM WOW! I have never seen this before! This is probably in 1975....the Westin is under construction and almost finished. This picture is awesome!

enzo January 10th, 2003, 11:07 PM Nice construction photo!
A fine building, ahead of it's time. The only thing I'm not too fond of is the glazing, I just don't like the color. (too dark and silvery for my liking).
BTW, have they done any serious remodeling of the interior lobbies? While I love the spaces, the last time I was in it was all mauve and pink (and concrete). Have they updated the color scheme?
8/10

Way ahead of it's time indeed.
When were you in it last? You say muave and pink? The last time I was at the Westin was in December. The inside was all nice and smooth with wood panneled walls in the entrance. It has granite floors.....and the atrium has seating and pianos with lights shining on the decoritive collumns leading to the cylindrical skylight. It has changed a lot I guess....no more pink as you remember it.
enzo January 10th, 2003, 11:54 PM When were you in it last?
In the 80's. Thanks for the info!;)

Do you think RenCen is better because of the 4 surrounding towers or do you find the building itself better?
Wu-Gambino January 12th, 2003, 05:25 AM The buildings surronding it, but I would prefer Atlanta over Detriot.
Pablo January 18th, 2003, 07:40 AM 9/10 very nice building
renell January 19th, 2003, 11:10 AM 7 even though i like blue glass, there something about it that makes it boring

Exactly!
8/10....
james2390 April 5th, 2003, 07:28 PM i really really like this building. In the summer i stayed with my aunt for about a month and a half in 98. My aunt knew i had a "fasination" with Atlanta and its skyscrapers so she took me up 2 the observatory. Its a really well designed building, and has the coolest observatory i have ever seen. This building is the one that showed me the world of skyscrapers. I have to give it a 10!
Evergrey April 11th, 2003, 01:29 AM 6 Although essentially the same building as the Ren-Cen in Detroit... I like this one better... and here's why...
It doesn't have those hideous boxes surrounding it... in Atlanta... you can actually get a view of the city... instead of a view of some boring, ugly box...
This building actually adds to the Atlanta skyline... whereas I think the off-center placement and enormous bulk of the Renaissance Complex really detracts from the beauty of old Detroit skyscrapers... and creates an unbalanced look...
BGT April 26th, 2003, 01:33 AM 7.5/10
UPWARDATLANTA May 15th, 2003, 02:29 PM Night pic, and lower DT Atlanta, as you can see it is very dense below the tall tower's.

huaiwei May 28th, 2003, 12:19 PM The facade saved this otherwise typically tubular building...8/10.
Monkey August 15th, 2003, 12:08 PM I must admit I was perfectly horrified when Atlanta first entered into the skyscraper business! This was one of the early buildings, and I've long gotten used to the idea. ;) I must say the place has its charms & is holding up quite nicely. Imitators elsewhere abound ... ;)
So I'll give it a heartfelt 8.
AtlanticaC5 August 21st, 2003, 03:28 PM Usually I don't like circular buildings, but this one is GREAT!! 9/10

7 World Trade April 23rd, 2004, 04:51 AM i like this one for its 2-cylinder design (marriot ren cen is a copycat of this one). and it creates a more traditional balance to atlanta's postmodern skyline too.
8.5

GetOnDaTrain October 25th, 2004, 12:02 AM 10/10. Though 1976-built, Westin Peachtree Plaza Hotel definitely raised the standards on building new talls elsewhere. Sleek, pretty, futuristic and FULL CIRCLE!! Sweet.

moonshield October 6th, 2005, 04:40 AM It's a fine building but I don't really like how it fits into Atlanta's Skyline and it looks too much like all of the other round glass towers in the US. There are far better looking towers in Atlanta. 6/10

Scruffy88 January 8th, 2006, 09:12 PM One of my favorites from that era. Simple yet elegant. Ahead of its time in a time of plain boxes. The reflective glass looks great during the day and better at night.

po-boy January 26th, 2010, 04:35 PM Very nice building. Still looks cool over thirty years after it was built and it is a major part of the Atlanta skyline.
Growing up in the South, this was the first really tall building I ever saw. 9 out of 10.
The building suffered a lot of damage from a tornado in 2008. I have read that they are replacing all of the windows and that they will have a slightly bronze tint. Does anyone have any recent pics?

The small attached cylinder (panoramic elevator?)...I donīt like it.
atlantamustang February 23rd, 2010, 11:11 PM Yeah they are replacing the windows, and it looks really nice. Sorry i dont have any pics, but they do have a bronze tint and to me the window frames look a lot smaller giving the building a much sleeker look.

Arguably the best in Atlanta. It's a shame that the windows were being replaced when I was in Atlanta.

L.A.F.2. October 8th, 2012, 06:29 PM I gave it a 9. Such an icon for Atlanta. Tallest hotel in the world when it was built!
philphil60 October 8th, 2012, 07:02 PM Peachtree Plaza is a "10" in my book! When I was a teenager, we drove through Atlanta, and there in the distance was this huge building under construction. It was topping out then, and covered with the sleek, shiny windows that made the whole downtown area sparkle and shine. It was quite impressive! A year later I was back in Atlanta and made the trip to the top. What an impressive building and skyscraper! The Peachtree Plaza was the building that made me take notice of tall buildings and my passion for architecture and skyscrapers!!
