Westin Peachtree Plaza
Atlanta, USA

HEIGHT: 220m/723 feet
FLOORS: 73 floors
COMPLETION: 1976
ARCHITECT: John Portman & Associates

- Tallest hotel in the world when completed in 1976.
- Tallest hotel in the United States.
- Tallest hotel in the Western Hemisphere.
- One of the top 10 tallest hotels in the world.
- It has 2 360 degree revolving restaurants at the top and a public obervation deck.

This crystalline urban context, which dominates all else, marks the commercial center of Atlanta. The introverted plinth, out of which the hotel rises, establishes a clear boundary between the building and its surroundings. There is now a new connecting level in the upper section of the plinth, where shopping malls create links with the lower levels. The Peachtree Plaza Hotel stands for a hotel conception that aims to create an urban microcosm within the hotel itself; it contains conference rooms, bars, shops, a variety of restaurants and large public atriums - a celebration of hotel life for the guests.

Nice facade, but even though the shape is not a box, it still doesn't do much for me, since there are almost no angles on this one.

beautiful in it's simplicity. still not my favorite in atlanta, but i still like it. the darker coloured ring for the top 3 floors makes it look even more futuristic IMO.

This building makes me thing "80's" even though it was built in the 70's. I love it's all-glass and ring-around-the-top look. The Sundial up top (where you can have a drink) is hellaciously expensive, but provides a breathtaking view on a clear day.

This building, along with a couple more, defines the atlanta skyline for me. It's street-level is a series of plazas and concourses complete with street-level retail, which I really appreciate compared to a lot of other buildings in Atlanta, which are vast wastelands and parking garages at street level.

I love such pics that show people interacting within the confines of a skyscraper with fantastic views and height outside the windows - adds a human scale to these structures:)

7/10 0 it's slim enough to have good height and the glass facade catches the light well.
On the other hand, it owuld have used a few set backs to give it even better height, and to make it less initimidating from teh street...And I'm not ssure about the base or the flat roof with that one wilmpy little antenna...

Nice construction photo!

A fine building, ahead of it's time. The only thing I'm not too fond of is the glazing, I just don't like the color. (too dark and silvery for my liking).

BTW, have they done any serious remodeling of the interior lobbies? While I love the spaces, the last time I was in it was all mauve and pink (and concrete). Have they updated the color scheme?

Way ahead of it's time indeed.

When were you in it last? You say muave and pink? The last time I was at the Westin was in December. The inside was all nice and smooth with wood panneled walls in the entrance. It has granite floors.....and the atrium has seating and pianos with lights shining on the decoritive collumns leading to the cylindrical skylight. It has changed a lot I guess....no more pink as you remember it.

i really really like this building. In the summer i stayed with my aunt for about a month and a half in 98. My aunt knew i had a "fasination" with Atlanta and its skyscrapers so she took me up 2 the observatory. Its a really well designed building, and has the coolest observatory i have ever seen. This building is the one that showed me the world of skyscrapers. I have to give it a 10!

6 Although essentially the same building as the Ren-Cen in Detroit... I like this one better... and here's why...

It doesn't have those hideous boxes surrounding it... in Atlanta... you can actually get a view of the city... instead of a view of some boring, ugly box...

This building actually adds to the Atlanta skyline... whereas I think the off-center placement and enormous bulk of the Renaissance Complex really detracts from the beauty of old Detroit skyscrapers... and creates an unbalanced look...

I must admit I was perfectly horrified when Atlanta first entered into the skyscraper business! This was one of the early buildings, and I've long gotten used to the idea. ;) I must say the place has its charms & is holding up quite nicely. Imitators elsewhere abound ... ;)

So I'll give it a heartfelt 8.

Very nice building. Still looks cool over thirty years after it was built and it is a major part of the Atlanta skyline.

Growing up in the South, this was the first really tall building I ever saw. 9 out of 10.

The building suffered a lot of damage from a tornado in 2008. I have read that they are replacing all of the windows and that they will have a slightly bronze tint. Does anyone have any recent pics?

Yeah they are replacing the windows, and it looks really nice. Sorry i dont have any pics, but they do have a bronze tint and to me the window frames look a lot smaller giving the building a much sleeker look.

Arguably the best in Atlanta. It's a shame that the windows were being replaced when I was in Atlanta.

I gave it a 9. Such an icon for Atlanta. Tallest hotel in the world when it was built!

Peachtree Plaza is a "10" in my book! When I was a teenager, we drove through Atlanta, and there in the distance was this huge building under construction. It was topping out then, and covered with the sleek, shiny windows that made the whole downtown area sparkle and shine. It was quite impressive! A year later I was back in Atlanta and made the trip to the top. What an impressive building and skyscraper! The Peachtree Plaza was the building that made me take notice of tall buildings and my passion for architecture and skyscrapers!!
