(i dont know if there's a thread for this. there is one in skyscraperpage.com. if there is, moderator please combine this with it.)

i think this submission is the best. i like the organic shapes; very aquatic-looking and fits the theme of a marine concept yet very "clean" looking. by Sun & Schrempp Associates. i hope they win it!!!

btw, what a stupid name!! why combine a 'maritime culture' with 'pop music'? they arent at all related!!!! and why do taiwanese always conjure up such weird, long names? like 'taiwan taoyuan international airport. why not just call it taoyuan int'l airport? and why does everything have to have a 'municipal' in the front? it sounds so bureaucratic!!!

That's an awesome design... I like how it incorporates the sea channels and rivers by bridging over them instead of seeing them as an obstacle that limits the building to just the piece of land that its core is built on. Seems like Kaohsiung is doing pretty well with turning its industrial waterfront into a recreational one.

Btw only the first and last pictures show up.

The design is really god, but these is just a proposal, they are not in the Shortlist for the final stage. I hope the winner will be as good than these, or better. We can find many proposal for the competition on Internet, but
i think that we will just see the shortlist proposal at the end of the competition. 2011/01/18

It looks like a project that is hard to maintain...especially those greening roofs.

Taiwanese don't know how to maintain.

hmmm....it doesnt look that bad. just that the grass looks kinda wilted. and flowers dont all match up. but the pic is kinda blurry so i cant tell. i think they should plant real flowers instead of using those big plastic ones, like low-maintenance flowers, plants and shrubs.

i REALLY dont like it after watching the video. for one thing, the music is awful. i closed it before even finishing it.

i imagine all those metal bars in the structure just rusting in the sea air and from taiwanese' renowned lack of care for maintenance. and this looks like an incredibly high-maintenace complex. how will the window cleaners clean those mismatched uneven windows in the tower? when architects design a building they should keep in mind how practical it is to maintain it.

So you want something that doesn't require any maintenance? Like a Soviet style concrete box?

They'll maintain it or be forced to do so if it's a landmark that means something to the local government. Does Taipei 101 look nasty after all these years? How about the Tuntex tower or the two shiny glass buildings next to it?

YEP (Y)
most landmarks in taiwan are maintained. So rest assure ;).
It would not end up like all those depeleted pieces of conrete houses that look like crap. It is run by the government therefore probably well maintained.

no, but a soviet style GLASS box is much preferable!!

taipei 101 and tuntex towers are much easier for window washers to clean since they pretty much have flat glass cladding. i can imagine those uneven walls on the sides of the tower for this design will be very difficult for window washers to cling onto.

but whatever, my main point is this design sucks compared to the other designs!!

Kaohsiung Maritime Cultural & Pop Music Center Competition winner / MADE IN28Jan 2011By Sebastian J — Filed under: Awarded Competitions ,Cultural ,Museums and Libraries , Kaohsiung, MADE IN, Taiwan

The Spanish architecture firm MADE IN have won the Maritime Cultural & Pop Music Center International Competition in the city of Kaohsiung, Taiwan. You can see more images and architect’s description after the break.

This project proposes a responsible urbanism based on the heterogeneity of the program, on the urban porosity and on the adaptability to the different situations and events.

We didnīt want an intervention that was working only in moments of concerts and festivals, we wanted a fabric that was forming a part of the day after day of the city offering daily spaces to the habitants of Kaohsiung.

The project develops along a bay in an extension of more than 11 hectares, meeting different situations of contour, which do that the action divides in three differentiated zones:

Courtesy of MADE IN

- Zone 1: in this zone there is articulated the Outdoor Performance Area (for 12 000 persons) the Large Performance Hall (5000) and the Pop Music Exhibit Area that is a continuous element that finished off by two towers, one of 113 meters of height and the other one of 83 meters.

- Zone 2: in this area we implement the stipulated program by the organization placing a night market, who supposes the form of leisure most extended in Taiwan, and that guarantees the activity in the bay during every day of the year. The Marine Culture exhibit area goes through this zone to 6 meters of heights, and is conceived as a “promenade” between the different pavilions and with the sea always present in the skyline.

Courtesy of MADE IN

- Zone 3: this zone of longitudinal character connect to two important poles of attraction, the new station of ferrys in the southern part, and the new night market in the northern part. In this area, we create different streets: a gallery covered with cultural activity, from which you access to 8 Small Performance Halls (200-400 persons), a maritime walk to level +8 that has a different gardens of water, and a great walk of 10 meters rail bicycle.

The symbolic nature of this project isnīt in the fact that the towers could look like a waves, or that the intervention remember a seascape,no, we want that the project gets this character for the use that the people of Kaohsiung does of him, and for how the projects gradually gradually is incorporated in to the city as a place full of life and of possibilities of use and enjoyment.

i really dont like this design. it looks so messy looking with all those structural brackets and bars. but i guess it's better than bathroom tiles or grey concreted. :/ i hope the actual completed building looks better than the rendering.

Well i like this but I would prefer glass like structure etc instead of organic designs.
But it's alright at night it looks amazing.
And its a great improvement to the kaoshiung harbor
I think taiwan likes alot of organic designs as winners....ex: taichung opera house.

I prefer organic designs, they're the next wave of architectural trends. Geometric glass buildings are already all too common around the world to stand out. We want architecture that sets Taiwan apart and gives it unique character, not just make it look like any other city in the world.

That's the problem with many US cities, none of their downtown areas have buildings that really stand out compared to those in other cities, with the exception of a few landmarks that pioneered construction technology. And they're all either shaped like a cylinder or a tall rectangular box.

This is true but it's going to get a while for people to get use to organic buildings :P
