View Full Version : Myrtle Beach or Virginia Beach?
Tauricorn August 13th, 2004, 08:37 AM This has been something that has always interested me way back when I was a kid. Which city do you think is more popular, Myrtle Beach or Virginia Beach?
Try to keep the discussion objective and w/o any personal malice for either town. But I'm just curious b/c growing up I knew how poopular VA Beach was, but then when I went to college for the first time in WV I noticed from locals how popular Myrtle Beach was. Keep in mind this is not a my town is better than yours thread, just curious.
I will remain impartial and not vote.

JRQ August 14th, 2004, 02:18 AM Most popular is definitely Myrtle Beach. Virginia Beach is way more populous, but the water is colder (usually), and thats a big factor. No one in my area goes to VA Beach, but we are always going to Myrtle. Its just a cool place to be :)
waccamatt August 14th, 2004, 03:59 AM Myrtle is one of the biggest resorts in the country...on up there with Las Vegas and Orlando, believe it or not. I have visited Myrtle Beach for over 30 years and the growth there has been phenomenal.
bigbruiser August 14th, 2004, 07:13 PM Myrtle Beach definitely has more tourist because of the warmer climate year around. Never been there but have heard good things about it.
Talbot August 14th, 2004, 08:15 PM Myrtle Beach, when I went there I liked it alot more than Virginia Beach.
James704 May 2nd, 2005, 12:28 AM Where would I rather live? Myrtle Beach is more beautiful but I'd choose VA Beach, b/c centrally located, close to the Outer Banks, has a diverse integrated population, better universities/schools, less touristy, etc.
TarheelsCubs May 2nd, 2005, 12:49 AM Virginia Beach easily. When I was a kid we went to Myrtle Beach every year. I had so much fun back then. We stayed at a beach front house. That same place is now a huge Golf shop. Myrtle Beach is now a joke, it's one big Tourist trap. The Virginia beach boardwalk is cool and there is always alot of people hanging out there. My first choice would be Wrightsville Beach, NC though. Because there you at least have downtown Wilmington.
Yes, the water at VA Beach is cold, thats the only downside. I live just a couple hours from all three beaches so I have spent alot of time there.
JRQ May 2nd, 2005, 02:04 AM I like Atlantic Beach in NC.
James704 May 2nd, 2005, 03:17 AM I like Atlantic Beach in NC.
Care to share why? I'm surprised to hear you say this. Atlantic Beach/Emerald Isle is okay. It's definitely not as crowded as Wrightsville which is good, but no one I know would dare say AB/EI is better.
TarheelsCubs May 2nd, 2005, 03:28 AM I love Atlantic Beach too. It brings back memories of all the jr/srs I went to every year in high school. Most of the memories are a bit "fuzzy" though. lol
James704 May 2nd, 2005, 04:00 AM You talking about Jr/Sr Skip Day!? Haha, I remember that!
TarheelsCubs May 2nd, 2005, 04:16 AM "You talking about Jr/Sr Skip Day!? Haha, I remember that!"
Well, not really a skip day. Jr/sr is when we would all get a place at the beach for one week, usually a week or so after prom week. We would party all week! Atlantic Beach would be crazy that week because alot of high school students from different cities were doing the same thing that week. There would be huge keg parties up and down the beach. I went to New Bern High.
Jr/sr skip day was fun too!
I understand the police have really cracked down and pretty much killed Jr/SR these days. Many kids have fled to Emerald Isle, without much luck. Why can't the police let them have fun for just one week out the year? We got away with it though. There would be a party in like every other beach cottage, it was so much fun! literally
JRQ May 2nd, 2005, 05:12 AM I like Atlantic because its alot less crowded, and a nice area.
TarheelsCubs May 2nd, 2005, 06:27 AM JRQ, actually it depends on when you go to Atlantic Beach. For the most part, its very crowded in Atlantic beach on Saturdays and Sundays during the summer. It's about impossible during holidays like Memorial, July4, and Labor day. It's pretty chill on Mondays thru thursdays though. Best place to go in Atlantic is the Sheraton Pier. Theres outside bars, bands playing, and the beach is always packed. (on the days mentioned above) the girls are hot too. Some pretty good night Clubs near by too.
Justadude May 2nd, 2005, 07:12 AM Never been to VB, but Myrtle Beach S-U-C-K-S. It's easily one of the trashiest spots on the entire East Coast. Nothing but neon signs, faux surf shops, all-nite diners and retail outlets. You'd hardly even know there was a beach there. Surely Virginia Beach can't be as bad as that.
hokiehigh May 2nd, 2005, 08:39 PM I agree Myrtle sucks. I went there every summer when I was a kid but would never go back now unless to play golf. People in Charlotte call it the Redneck Rivierra.
JRQ May 2nd, 2005, 10:10 PM My family owns/rents (not sure) a beachouse there, and they go every year...its not too crowded either, IMO.
lammius May 3rd, 2005, 09:25 AM I grew up near Va Beach. The resort area is touristy as you may expect but I think there's more to the larger area than just that. I've never been to Myrtle Beach.
