Guangzhou, China
The Baietan Master Plan envisions a sustainability-integrated city with over 740,000 residents and 660,000 employees situated on the banks of the Pearl River in central Guangzhou, China. Baietan will be Guangzhou's International Commercial Center located at the heart of the Guang-Fo region. Situated to the Southwest of historic Shamian Island, a 35 square kilometer area of former industrial land will be transformed into a twenty-first century urban environment that combines the core qualities of Lingnan culture with urban density, transit accessibility, livability, and ecological vitality.

z0rg November 17th, 2010, 09:09 PM Actually the preliminary height is 650m, not 600m. But this is just concept, so it may be taller or shorter in the end.
I think I've read somewhere that they'll release the designs in 2010.

deepblue01 November 19th, 2010, 09:02 AM ^^ I hope none!!!!!! Burj is just too tall to fit into any skyline. I prefer these 400-600m towers. They are really classy and really define the skyline without standing out too much!.

Shiruba November 20th, 2010, 12:40 PM Does anyone know when the redevelopment of that area is supposed to start?
I think I read 2020 somewhere a while ago, but I'm not sure at all. 2020 seems so far for China.
It would be interesting to know when the Zhujiang New Town CBD has been planned. This could give us a hint about that project.
I have found numerous pictures of Baietan's project showing all very different masterplans. Is the masterplan in this post the final version?

From what I understood it seems that the government started to plan Zhujiang New Town in 1999 and according to your pictures the constructions really started actively in 2005.
Baietan seems to be in the very first phase of planning. We shouldn't see any activity there so soon. Constructions might start in 5 years or later as unlike the Zhujiang New Town plot, the area is build. People will have to be relocated and buildings removed.
ps. thanks for the pics zorg, I've seen others from different angle (Tianhe Beilu somewhere) but I get the same feeling everytime, China is really astonishing.

bennyboo November 25th, 2010, 02:50 AM ^^ I'm sorry, but how the hell does this tower look terrible and poorly placed? I fail to see the logic.
the reason it looks terrible is purely my opinion. im not saying you should think its bad looking because i do. and i feel like it should be placed a lot closer to Guangzhou IFC and begin to build a more central skyline like pudong district in shanghai
CoCoMilk November 25th, 2010, 03:01 AM ^^ Shanghai actually have more than one CBD, and some of are their skyscrapers are separated in various district so not all of them are in pudong. Because of immense urban population (Guangzhou have 16 million peepo (http://gd.news.sina.com.cn/news/2010/11/04/1038410.html)), they have to divert their financial centers but don't worry...Guangzhou's Zhujiang CBD will be very dense.

i think not for Guangzhou..they could maybe put a tourist vantage point like victoria peak so that the whole skyline is in oneness(if the only thing that matters is taking panoramic photos of the city)..and besides, decongestion is the new thing in china..in a span of 5years, they've built all that up..what more can we expect but spectacle from China..

Myouzke November 25th, 2010, 10:12 AM Bai'etan is a great location for a new CBD much better than ZNT it much closer to the historical core of GZ it got Shamian and Bar Street great attractions right across the river. Relocating people should not take as long since the area is mostly occupied by old factories. Looking at the proposals Datansha is going to be redeveloped too.

Shiruba March 22nd, 2011, 06:32 AM The Diamond Mansion is officially confirmed and will become the tallest building in Guangzhou (ie. over 600m)
Tallest skyscraper in Guangzhou to be built in Bai'e'tan
2011-March-18 Source: english.gz.gov.cn
On March 15, Spring 2011 Investment Attraction was held in Hong Kong on which Liwan District government introduced 33 projects including the popular Bai'e'tan Economic Circle, regeneration of Enning Lu and Guangzhou-Foshan Creative Park.
During the investment attraction meeting, Tang Hanghao, Chief Executive of Liwan District government, said that the plan of building the world's tallest sightseeing ferries wheel in Bai'e'tan was canceled. Many citizens and experts had objected to the plan as the ferries wheel may not go with the overall view of Shamian. In view of this the city planning department once decided to move it to Pazhou. But after the Guangzhou Tower was set up, the ferries wheel finally found its home at the top of this "tallest tower in Guangzhou".
Tang also said that Bai'e'tan has a plot ratio of 1.2, the lowest among all economic circles in Guangzhou. It is decided that Diamond Mansion, Guangzhou's tallest commercial building of about 600 meters, will be built in Bai'e'tan. This new landmark building will be planned by the municipal department and subject to slight adjustment in height.
Among the 33 projects introduced in Hong Kong, there are 7 regeneration projects involving an area of 64280 m2. Accepting suggestions from the experts of culture and city planning, Liwan government will strengthen the protection of featured buildings, which means another 10000 m2 of buildings around Enning Lu will be preserved including over 100 former residences of famous Canton Opera artists. Residents can preserve and inherit the unique Xiguan culture.

I doubt that, because this building will be far away from downtown Canton (ie. 珠江新城), it will be in White Goose Pool district(ie. =Baietan=白鵝潭) in Lai Wan
The new skyline won't be as striking as all the skyscrapers cluster together like Dubai
dunno what the the final design will be yet, but the news reports still use original "rectangular glass box" design, and you know SOM loves that design
The name of this building will be "Diamond Tower"?
azn_man12345 March 22nd, 2011, 06:48 PM ^Hmm... Well that's no fun. It would've been really cool to see all of GZ's tallest next to each other. Oh well. All that means is that they'll need a 600m+ downtown :D

deepblue01 March 23rd, 2011, 09:37 AM ^^ You can add in Shenzhen now right? Guangzhou is kind of the same when Chow Tai Fook is done, it already has GV Tower and GZ IFC quite close together already and what about beijing and their proposed towers, they will be somewhat in the same CBD. HK's Supertalls are across the river from each other and 2IFC is close to the Centre right? or the other tower.
Chongqing will have plenty on that peninsula of theirs

True Baietan is roughly 5km away from Zhujiang Net Town. But unlike Shanghai, Guangzhou will have several nice skylines. Baietan won't just build one of these supertalls. It's supposed to be the second CBD on Guangzhou. I bet others will pop-up around.
There is a 500m planned in Yuancun which is just next to Zhujiang New Town. Skyline will be definitely impressive in that area in the next 10 years.
sweet-d March 24th, 2011, 11:49 PM This is a pretty nice plan the towers okay but it is to many square boxes. But at least it's not like Dubai.

that is not very high it should have um.70% of land should be residentail.
average hight 35 story. um that means and you could fit 40000 houses * 3=120000 people in every km^2 which means 4 million people and 4 million jobs

Skidmore, Owings & Merrill’s Baietan Master Plan Awarded
The San Francisco chapter of the American Institute of Architects has recently honored Skidmore, Owings & Merrill's Baietan Master Plan with a 2011 Merit Award for Urban
Design.
The Baietan Master Plan addresses a 35-square kilometer portion of the Southern Chinese Pearl River Delta that stretches between the city of Guangzhou, with its 10.3
million inhabitants, and city of Foshan, a smaller city of 5.4 million people. Growth in the Delta region has allowed the two cities to begin to merge into one mega region.
Led by SOM Planning Director Ellen Lou, the design team created a distinct, diverse, and sustainable neighborhood identity that respected its waterfront location and the
intrinsic qualities of local “Lingnan” culture.
The Plan differentiated itself through its unprecedented level of detail, specifying the dimensions for attributes of individual parcels, including lighting, street furniture, taxi
drop-offs, crosswalks, and pedestrian bridges. Another important differentiator of the Plan involved a strategy for maintaining the region’s “urban villages” — an important
contributor to the Delta’s social fabric.
In the summer of 2010, the City Government of Guangzhou accepted the Baietan Master Plan. SOM’s Plan will guide ongoing implementation of the project over the next
several years. The design team is honored to have had the opportunity to inform this development while sensitively addressing the issues of urbanization that characterize
today’s China.
The interdisciplinary SOM team included Landscape Architect Hargreaves Associates, Transportation Planner CHS Consulting, Economic Consultant CBRE, Sustainability
Infrastructure Consultant Sherwood Design Engineers, Local Planning Consultant Guangzhou UPDS (Urban Planning Design Studio), and Brownfield Consultant ICF Jones
& Stokes.

Pansori June 5th, 2011, 02:45 AM Looks like this is the area where I stayed during my visit to Guangzhou. Does that mean it will have to go and give the place for the new development or will some of it be preserved? I'm sure there are some heritage buildings at the riverside near that supertall tower.
I have some photos of the area in my Guangzhou thread (the first few posts). It's all just near where that supertall tower is meant to be located. I really wonder if all of that will have to go just like that? It's such a lovely place!

Myouzke June 22nd, 2011, 02:18 AM Looks like this is the area where I stayed during my visit to Guangzhou.

Its most likely some of the riverside building will be preserved sort like The Bund in Shanghai.

I doubt they are gonna preserve the buildings we can see in your pictures. Those constructions, bar mostly, are recently build and cannot be compared to the Bund in Shanghai.
There are though some Lingnan (local culture) style constructions in the entire area that will be preserved.
KillerZavatar June 22nd, 2011, 04:33 PM i have the feeling this might be finished earlier than chow tai fook center =(

Wow! I didn't know there were so many white people in Guangzhou!
This tower is going to look amazing. I hope they go with the original design.
Btw, is it possible for foreigners to buy land in China yet?
z0rg September 2nd, 2011, 01:59 PM We have developer already: Suning.

Can't wait to see the contest with the actual proposals for the tower
droneriot September 2nd, 2011, 02:07 PM Are Suning reliable developers? What other projects were they in charge of?

They're a big developer, a slow one since they take ages till they start anything, but quite reliable anyway.

Plus several 200m+ towers coming in Nanjing, Chengdu and some second tier cities I fail to remember now.
moustache September 2nd, 2011, 03:12 PM So ugly and fat building ...
KillerZavatar September 3rd, 2011, 04:50 AM reliable developer or not, doesnt make a difference for now since its a rather long term proposal. i think the design and stuff will change a lot before this starts. i cant see many supertalls going up in that region right now, the demand is still higher in the guangzhou cbd and this area isnt the most important one now i guess.
