Well let me introduce this thread. Every hour there are so many accidents all over the world. It is many times sad but there are also really funny ones which happenes and not so serieus. So let's start to share pictures of these accidents and other funny situations from roads of our countries!

What about some pics from Slovakia?

they obviously didn't think about things above the lane, so they had closed only that one where the truck was parked

Yeah, but they should close just one. I think it is possible to do it in one lane.

^^ Why they didn't close the lane?
It wasn't practical to close both lanes. What SHOULD have been done, was to have manual traffic control for the open lane. That way, the person controlling traffic could have stopped the truck, in addition to reducing the speed of traffic passing the work area.

manual control is not acceptable at motorways. the most proper thing would be to have the whole half of motorway closed and to organize traffic at the other half. why they didn't do it? probably because of the fact that works on changing regulation of traffic would take them at least 3 hours, and finnising probably the small repair (i think they've been changing burnt bulb) takes 10 minutes.
on the other hand - there is also enough space at emergency lane to bypass working zone. maybe that would be the best solution.

Fortunately there was no accident.

Unfortunately the Youtube footage is gone. :)

Escaped llamas cause Red Cow chaos

A herd of llamas and two goats caused chaos on the M50 this afternoon at the Red Cow roundabout [sic].

The animals escaped from a circus and mader [sic] their way onto the motorway where they caused major traffic disruption, with up to 5km tailbacks reported.

They have since been rounded up and loaded into trucks and traffic in the area has returned to normal.

^^^ I have never seen someone jump out of a moving car before, it looks like there were more likely worse off than if they hadn't. The woman who bailed out of the black car was nearly ran over, the last one in that pileup must have hit their own door badly and the British ones nearly ended up underneath as the car span around. They really need to teach people how to drive in icy conditons, you could see many who have clamped on the brakes even though they are sliding and even steering out when it is clearly not doing anything at all.

I've seen one slower. Too bad I never had my camera. Local police trying to pull an elderly driver over, most likely for impeding traffic. Average estimated speed: 15-20 km/h. Watched the whole thing go through the contra flow I had set up to allow some roadworks to take place.

Lol, I hate SUV cars - too big for city, crap for off road and totaly unuseful..

Only if you get a two-wheel-drive model. Anything with 4x4 is a lot better off-road or in snow or ice, but a lot of people get a SUV for the size, passenger capacity, etc, in which case I recommend a van. I'd prefer something like a Jeep Patriot - very good off road, good fuel economy for its group (22mpg), and low price for its group (midsize SUV)

The fact that the street is concrete had noting to do with it. Seattle is right at sea level, and has a warm winter climate. Throw in the fact that the city's Transportation department didn't act fast enough... AGAIN :bash: And that was the result. Interstate 5, was gridlocked for nearly 10 hours from about 1500-0000. Many simply abandoned their vehicles. Some returned to find vandals had struck, smashing out side windows.

Could be an error on the height sign. That was a problem at the northern approach to the Lions Gate Bridge connecting Vancouver and North Vancouver. Ministry of Transportation officials thought there was more overhead clearance than there really was. Trucks traveling west along Marine Drive would get stuck. The signs have been corrected.

what i don't understand in moscow is that they got these massive ten lane roads, and they allow traffic to cross it without any trafficlights? why? they could avoid a lot of these accidents. of course they like to run red lights and go in the opposite lane and all that, but its sad to see accidents happening because of the lack of traffic lights and bad planning of roads and junctions.

Main road leading to the port, so there's a lot of heavy duty traffic. When they closed it for reconstruction all that traffic was diverted to a street that was not designed for it and last I drove there it looked like those vids and pics.

i don't think the two are in the same league. in the cases like you mentioned only the top layer needs to be changed (ok it's not smooth, but you can still drive on it when its removed). in this case absolutely everything has to be reconstructed from the foundations upwards, and quite visibly its very hard to drive without wrecking your car. I was surprised that a high traffic road doesn't have priority and is left to reach a stage this bad.

ChrisZwolle
January 4th, 2011, 12:10 PM
People seem to run the red light a lot at high speed. Maybe the clearance time of the intersection is not enough. People start driving at the moment the traffic light runs from red to orange (and then to green), while people from another direction try to cross a red light.

I think it's mainly mentality and inexperience, but some problems may be avoided by checking the traffic light phases and clearance time. Red light cameras can also reduce accidents. Intoxicated drivers may be another problem.

It is also a good idea to install Jersey barriers along major multilane highways. Some have more than 4 lanes per direction and no separation whatsoever. They don't stop accidents from happing, but will reduce them for oncoming traffic.

Also in Germany people starts from the traffic lights when they turn orange from red, but there are much fewer accidents like these. I don't think clearance time is key here.

A: Moscow is in Russia. Russians have a taste for all things alcoholic, though this is SLOWLY, starting to change. Therefore, most, if not all the drivers were under the influence. The orange dump truck is the apparent exception. It appeared to have no brakes.

What they do in America for such traffic light phasing is when the || direction turns from green>yellow>red, the == direction stays red for a moment to allow leadfoots to get by on the || direction, and then the == direction immediately turns green with no previous indication unless you can see the traffic light for the || direction, which you usually can since traffic lights are typically placed on the far side of the intersection from the traffic they're meant for.

And as far as those nasty videos of Russian car accidents, I'm pretty sure bad road design is a major factor there. Insufficient signage, no traffic light, not to mention bad drivers...

Too bad it's just true. Sure, bad road design will probably have something to do with it as well, but with these accidents it's obvious that the drivers were just plain stupid, probably due to, as I said, alcohol and drugs.

And for the pedestrians: I've seen a guy just crossing a street with cars coming and having to make emergency stop here in Tallinn as well. They just don't have their minds straight, either due to mental ilness, alcohol or drugs. I can't think of anything else.

anyway if you know anything about drugs, you know it isn't like they make it look on tv. you don't go up the roof and try to fly immediately after a joint or a trip (well, it has happened but that's due to the same thing: stupidity), if anything, then it's alcohol that gets you more aggressive and less careful.

Some days ago I was driving thru Bologna, Italy, and stopped at a railway intersection with barriers down. On the other lane a man riding a bicycle crossed the intersection anyway, so when he passed by my car I gave him a loud ironic applause. He was out of his mind and started screaming "What the f*ck do you want? Mind your own f*cking business" and went away.

I can't help but thinking that if Italy is the mess it is, people like him are to blame...

there was similar situation here in zagreb few years ago when there was some crappy summit of some walruses who thought they ruled the world. police haven't make good announcment about possible traffic problems, so thousands of cars remained blocked on the streets. they've been escaping on all possible way. most popular was using the tram tracks, different green areas, and i remember that a concrete mixer stucked in that crowd, and to protect his machine he had to throw full load of fresh concrete in the middle of an avenue

The ones in America with a raised center use a curb around the inner edge of the travel lane so it's obvious that you shouldn't drive there, but it's wide and sloped so that it won't damage tires, also anything special in the center takes up relatively little of the available space because there is a wide cement area around it to protect it from tractor-trailers.

tbh444
January 19th, 2011, 04:09 PM
In Britain mini roundabouts have been a cheap solution from about the 90s onwards at busy-ish intersections which used to be dangerous give ways without traffic lights - I think in that context (though not ideal) they're a big improvement and work OK, but maybe that's because we are already the undisputed roundabout world champions so drivers are very used to them.

The main problem with that German example was that the circle was far too big and the space to drive round it too small

^^^ Those aftermarket stretch limo conversions are lethal. They are really badly converted often without anything more than structural improvements to cope with the extra length and weight. The turning circle on them is terrible as the steering rack is only meant to cope with a short vehicle. There seems to be a glut of them in my home town, it seems everyone is out for some easy money and it no longer seems in the least bit appealing. Once I saw one mount a pavement while turning a corner and nearly take several manically waving passengers' arms off on a lamppost.

O-Bahn guided busway in Adelaide, South Australia. Specifically built for buses, not cars.

Obvious enough?

Apparently not.

they build all that infrastructure, but can't build a remote control barrier/crossing gate?
the signs are obvious enough of course, but people break rules and they probably didn't expect a special road with no middle :)

anyway serves them right hehe

The white van driver may pretend his vehicle is a small bus. One may think a "busway" is meant for all kind of buses.
