Matthieu August 14th, 2004, 10:53 PM The best French cathedral, where the kings of France were sacred kings. Untouchable. And one of the best Cathedral of Europe if not of the world.
10/10

He gave awfull notes to Chambord, the Pont du Gard and not a good note to Versailles. In fact he gives the note it needs to push the thing out of the top10. I'm sure he does only because it's French. I put this to the attention of a mod but have no news.
4 to Chambord (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=125671)
6.5 to Versailles (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=125671)
5 to the Pont du Gard (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=125668)

Matthieu December 23rd, 2004, 03:17 PM Notre-Dame de Reims is the Reims Cathedral, where the kings of France used to be crowned. It replaced an older church (burned in 1211) built on the site of the basilica where Clovis was baptized by Saint Remi, bishop of Reims, in A.D. 496. The cathedral was completed by the end of the 13th century, with the exception of the west front (illustration, right). That portion was erected in the 14th century after 13th century designs— the nave having in the meantime been lengthened to afford room for the crowds that attended the coronations. The towers, 267 ft. high, were originally designed to rise 394 ft.; that on the south contains two great bells, one of which, named “Charlotte” by the Cardinal de Lorraine in 1570, weighs more than 11 tons.
In 1875 the French National Assembly voted £80,000 for repairs of the façade and balustrades. This façade is the finest portion of the building, and one of the most perfect masterpieces of the Middle Ages.
The three portals are laden with statues and statuettes. The central portal, dedicated to the Virgin, is surmounted by a rose-window framed in an arch itself decorated with statuary. The “gallery of the kings” above has the baptism of Clovis in the centre and statues of his successors.
The façades of the transepts are also decorated with sculptures—that on the north with statues of the principal bishops of Reims, a representation of the Last Judgment and a figure of Jesus Christ (le Beau Dieu) while that on the south side has a beautiful rose-window with the prophets and apostles. In 1481 fire destroyed the roof and the spires: of the four towers which flanked the transepts nothing remains above the height of the roof. Above the choir rises an elegant bell-tower in timber and lead, 59 ft. high, reconstructed in the 15th century.
The interior of the cathedral is 455 ft. long, 98 ft. wide in the nave, and 125 ft. high in the centre, and comprises a nave with aisles, transepts with aisles, a choir with double aisles, and an apse with ambulatory and radiating chapels. It has a profusion of statues similar to those of the outside, and stained glass of the 13th century. The rose-window over the main portal and the gallery beneath are of rare magnificence.
The cathedral possesses fine tapestries. Of these the most important series is that presented by Robert de Lenoncourt, archbishop under Francois I, representing the life of the Virgin. The north transept contains a fine organ in a flamboyant Gothic case. The choir clock is ornamented with curious mechanical figures. Several paintings, by Tintoretto, Nicolas Poussin, and others, and the carved woodwork and the railings of the choir, also deserve mention. Famous Russian painter Marc Chagall's work can also be admired in the cathedral through the stained glasses later installed at the back, and on the side of the cathedral.
The treasury contains the Sainte Ampoule, or holy flask, the successor of the ancient one that contained the oil with which French kings were anointed, which was broken at the French Revolution, a fragment of which the present Ampoule contains.
Notre-Dame de Reims Cathedral, the Former Abbey of Saint-Remi and the Palace of Tau were added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1991.

Substructure December 28th, 2004, 07:02 PM 1/10 because it was hard to build (deserve at least 1pt).
Many cluttered embellishments, old, bad looking, and pointless architecture.
...and I can't bear anything related to religions.
I can't understand so many people can still stand those ugly things.
Come on, we'll be in 2005 in a few days...

1st.
Also, you're rating the architecture, not the religion or the political idea behind. If you think this or this building is crap because it was built for a reason you disaprove or dislike. Then better not vote at all, it will be considered as trolling and downrating, wich is a lame.
Phobos December 29th, 2004, 02:17 AM ^so it's time to cancel his vote Exarchus....we don't need another H-M here.

I fully agree, the Cathedrals of Rouen, Strasbourg or Chartres are more unique and charmind with their asymmetries, this one seems too "perfect". 8.5/10

Liz L October 22nd, 2009, 09:20 PM Definitely a 10/10! She's truly "that church of kings...this queen of churches"
Hubby & I got to France this summer, and I'll never forget walking across the parvis towards her west front. Words failed me as my jaw hit the pavement!
She has a dancing joy and exuberance as she leaps toward heaven that lift my spirit. She doesn't just seem to defy gravity - she seems to forget that such a thing ever existed!
And when the sun hits the flashing wheels of the two west rose windows and they light up the air...well, now I can really understand why Gothic architecture has been compared to fire.
A special marvel is that her basic structure was sound enough to be restored and rebuilt after she was just about destroyed by German shelling during WW I. (I've read some contemporary comments, and trust me - if Germany and France hadn't been at war already, THAT would have done it!)
This poem I wrote expresses my wonder at all the magnificent cathedrals I saw, but, perhaps especially, my wonder at Notre Dame de Reims:
CATHEDRAL: A HYMN IN GLASS AND STONE
Music transforming stone, rapturous geometries
giving stately rhythm to the marching pillars;
guiding the nimble vaults and leaping buttresses
as they dance upward, measure by measure.
Stretching a mountain’s flinty strength into
slim looms of curling tracery that frame
glass tapestries, woven of fiery gems,
by the sun kindled into blazing,
joyous rainbows, that join their singing
with the dancing stone, and lift the spires
up through the golden light, up toward the sun
and heaven, glad rhapsodies of praise flowing
into a mighty “Adoremus Te!”
Si splendide!

It deserves a 10... however I'm only giving it a 9 until the French do something about the missing stained glass. Certainly one of the most historic cathedrals in all of Europe can be re-glazed? Those bare white glass clerestory windows is why Chartres is a 10, and Rheims is only a 9.
