View Full Version : Aussie Medals
Aussie Bhoy August 15th, 2004, 05:31 PM I'm in the UK, so the TV coverage is based, naturally, mostly upon the British athletes. I thought it would be good to have a seperate thread to the offical Athens one, just to note medals won by Aussies. All Olympic discussion should be on the other thread, and this one is just for posting news of medals.
It's tough over here not knowing all of the Aussie achievements. And the Brits never seem to show a medal table.
So far we have,
Day 1
Gold - Ian Thorpe in the swimming, mens 400m
Silver - Grant Hackett in the same event
Gold - Swimming, womens 4 * 100 relay, great race girls, especially the last swimmer who started behind the American and won convincinly.
Bronze - Diving, womens sync 3m
Bronze - Diving, mens 10m
2 Gold
1 Silver
2 Bronze
Aussie Bhoy August 15th, 2004, 05:32 PM Another medal,

Australia remains second on the medal table, behind China, after collecting two more gold medals on Day Two of the Athens Olympics.
Despite her credentials, cyclist Sara Carrigan was something of a surprise winner in the women's road race, in which fellow Aussies Oenone Wood (fourth) and Olivia Gollan (12th) were also well placed.
Then Petria Thomas became a true golden girl when she claimed her first individual Olympic gold medal with a brilliant finish in the 100m butterfly final, making it her second gold of these games following her part in the 4x100m victory on Day One.
Earlier in the day Victorian Adam Vella continued Australia's recent 'tradition' of standing on the podium at the conclusion of the men's trap.
Vella, at his first Games, shot an outstanding final to win the bronze medal, making up somewhat for Michael Diamond falling short in his quest for a third successive gold medal in the event. Diamond finished eighth.
The women's 10m air pistol was also completed, with Lalita Yauhleuskaya finishing equal 21st, with a score of 379, and Linda Ryan three points back in a share of 28th place.
In other events which saw medals decided, fencer Evelyn Halls was 14th in the women's individual epee and judoka Heath Young won his opening bout before being beaten by the eventual bronze medalist in the 66kg class. He then went out in the repechage round.
At the Schinias rowing course, the Australian women's lightweight double sculls crew, Sally Newmarch and Amber Halliday, set a new world-best time in the heats.
The men's lightweight fours also won their heat to go straight through to the semi-finals, and the men's quad scull finished third in its heat and is also into a semi.
The women's quad scull was also third in its heat while the women's eight finished fourth, but the men's eight won its heat and is through to the final.
Back at the pool, Brooke Hanson qualified fastest for the final of the women's 100m breaststroke with Leisel Jones second-fastest just 0.34s behind.
Ian Thorpe was the second-fastest qualifier for the men's 200m freestyle final, behind Dutchman Pieter van den Hoogenband, and Grant Hackett clocked the fifth-best time.
Meanwhile Matt Welsh was the sixth-fastest through to the final of the men's 100m backstroke.
In tennis, Wayne Arthurs posted a straight-sets win over Romanian Victor Hanescu, but Sam Stosur went out at the hands of American Chanda Rubin.
The day started well for the team sports, with the men's water polo team beating Egypt 14-3, and the Kookaburras opening their hockey campaign with a 4-1 win over New Zealand, but it went downhill from there.
The baseballers put up a good showing against the powerful Cubans, losing 4-1, and the men's volleyball team also went down fighting against a highly-rated opponent, Brazil, taking the first set from the gold-medal fancies.
But things got a little embarrassing for the softball team, buoyed by its opening day win over Japan. The mercy rule was invoked when the Aussie Spirit was down 10-0 to the USA after five innings.
It wasn't much better for the Boomers, with host nation Greece running away to a 76-54 win to end a relatively good Australian day on a low.
Homeroids August 16th, 2004, 01:13 PM Gold - Womens Trap shooting.

invincible August 16th, 2004, 02:47 PM Damn timezones... puts all the good stuff in the middle of the night.
If only the world was flat and the sun went around the earth, then that way it would be the same time all around the world and we would be able to watch a final on TV without needing to alter sleep patterns.

Medal count favours Australia
August 18, 2004
A NEW spin on the Olympic Games medal tally has put Australia well ahead of China and the United States after four days of competition – but behind the United Arab Emirates.
Number-crunchers at the Australian Bureau of Statistics in Canberra have calculated an alternative medal tally taking each country's population into account as well as the number of medals.
Calculated on raw numbers, Australia was relegated to third place on the medal table after the US struck back in the pool and grabbed second spot, behind China.
But the ABS said Australia's tally of six gold medals, or one for every 3.4 million Australian residents, put Australia in second place when population was considered.
The tiny United Arab Emirates, which took out a shooting gold overnight, was first with one gold medal and three million residents.
The United States, with 49.5 million people for every gold, came in 14th and China – the world's most populous nation – was 18th, managing one gold medal for every 131.3 million residents.
Host nation Greece was ranked third on the ABS alternative table, followed by Switzerland, Hungary, Romania and the Ukraine.
Country, Gold, Population, Population `000 per gold 1. United Arab Emirates 1, 3,049,000, 3,049,000
2. Australia 6, 20,164,000, 3,361,000
3. Greece 2, 10,963,000, 5,482,000
4. Switzerland 1, 7,160,000, 7,160,000
5. Hungary 1, 9,830,000, 9,830,000
6. Romania 2, 22,278,000, 11,139,000
7. Ukraine 3, 48,163,000, 16,054,000
8. Japan 6, 127,738,000, 21,290,000
9. Italy 2, 57,310,000, 28,655,000
10. France 2, 60,428,000, 30,214,000
11. Turkey 2, 72,298,000, 36,149,000
12. South Africa 1, 45,058,000, 45,058,000
13. Korea (South) 1, 47,913,000, 47,913,000
14. United States 6, 297,031,000, 49,505,000
15. Thailand 1, 63,450,000, 63,450,000

CULWULLA August 19th, 2004, 01:08 AM NOT A BAD NIGHT IN THE POOL~! Petria Thomas got piped at end to get a silver!
Thorpie got a bronze in a race he qualified slowest in! he was coming last at the turn of the 100m and then turned on after burners to race in just behind hoogie to claim his 4th medal!
ALos Jodie henry set a new world record in 100m free semi, but poor old libby lenton failed to qualify for tonights final!
also lots of 4th places in other sports
rondeez August 19th, 2004, 10:23 AM Go Jodie!
Hopefully she DOESNT just chuck a "Liesel" and not emulate her WR semi final performance in the final.
Is it just me... but ive noticed Liesel is a VERY SORE LOSER. She used to cry alot but yeh shes a bad loser.
CULWULLA August 19th, 2004, 01:03 PM poor old leisel is suffering from a form of swimmers block where they fail to swim when they need to pull a big one.! i totally understand why she would be a bad looser. lets see, this is her 2nd olympics, she is current world record holder + world championship winner but yet fails to emulate it in the finals. i really hope she wins the 200mbreat tommorrow as she really does deserve it.she is still young (18) and she doesnt understand the whole concept of olympic swimming and the main reason is to compete and do your best, even though a gold medal would be nice.
i think Jodie henry will win 100m . she is awesome and killing it.very focused

hoffburger August 20th, 2004, 11:38 AM not time for alarm bells but grant hacketts heat swim for 1500m was pretty dodgy. he got 15:01 but the more worrying fact is that he looked stuffed after it. im sure he'll pull it out when it counts in the final though
Homeroids August 20th, 2004, 12:38 PM Yeah but remember Perkins got lane 8 for the final of the Atlanta games. I wouldn't be too worried about Hackett in the heat because he'd be mad to go all out and smash records in a heat. He said after the race that he did try to relax and time it. He was just 1 second over 15 minutes and that aint bad at all for a heat.
CULWULLA August 20th, 2004, 01:33 PM believe me when i say Hacket will blitz them in 1500m. its his race! has been for years!
i cant imagine a more torterous event than 30 laps of 50m pool.
i reckon heugil and hawke might get medals tommorrow morn!
CULWULLA August 20th, 2004, 05:12 PM wow! just got our 8th GOLD!! Anna Meares in 500m time trial! ALSO WORLD RECORD!! youngest ever women cyclist to win gold!! 20yrd

Billy the Kid August 24th, 2004, 12:43 AM Vely intelesting stats from the ABS
ABS medal tally puts Australia on top after day 9
On 18 August, the Australian Bureau of Statistics released an alternative view of the traditional Olympic medal tally to take into account the populations of competing nations.
The ABS said the traditional measure of medals as a 'raw score' did not take into account the population of the competing country, a possible factor in the ability of nations to field medal winning athletes. When this was considered, it presented a different picture to the traditional measure.
The ABS analysis shows that Australia's tally at the close of day 9 events equates to one Gold Medal for each 1,680,000 of the population. This ranks Australia in first place. Using this methodology, the rank order of countries using Population per Gold Medal is as follows:
MEDAL TALLY BY WORLD POPULATION

CULWULLA August 24th, 2004, 01:04 AM yah! were coming first! lol
were doing so well atm!
but i reckon jana Pitman isnt good enough for gold. she only qualified 6th fastest for thursdays final. but i reckon she will get bronze maybe? not bad for someone who was virtually out of the games 2 weeks ago!
A-brain August 24th, 2004, 01:12 AM What the heck is going on with the Japanese ??? They are winning bloody heaps of medals !! We should be in 3rd pozzie after last night but they had people in 3 of the 4 wrestling finals ..
Both Beach Volleyball teams crashed out too - so it's gonna be up to Anna Meares & the Opals & Jana to add to our Gold tally !
lozza August 24th, 2004, 04:30 AM Gday ,
I don't care what anyone thinks of me in saying this comment , but , If there is one country i hate losing to as an Australian, thats definitely the USA !
( And i bet you there is heaps of Australian's out there that agree with me too )
I don't know why , but it absolutely shit me to tears when we lost the softball to them last night ! I hope to God they don't win the Basketball , especially the Mens !
PS~ And i agree with the above ! if Australia had 250 million people , ( No , ACTUALLY, if we had 100 million people ) we would win almost every gold medal on offer i reckon ! :banana2:
Cheers
Lozza :bowtie:
Homeroids August 24th, 2004, 01:55 PM Aussie's into the Gold medal game for baseball believe it or not. Beat Japan 1-0. I think A-Brain would be happy about that :)
Jimmy James August 24th, 2004, 02:42 PM Do you think that Australia cares a little too much about the olympics - the other 3 (US, Japan and Chine) are countries with massive populations and a huge pool of talent, Australia has 20 million people and a steriod injecting room in Adelaide! I think we should be extremely proud that our athletes have done as well as they have. In sports I wouldn't have expected either like cycling, softball and diving.
Aussie Bhoy August 24th, 2004, 03:35 PM Australia has been one of the strongest Cycling nations for a while.
And of course Australia doesn't care too much about the Olympics, it's the main event.
Amaruu August 24th, 2004, 05:10 PM Hey, has Michael Diamond competed in his shooting event yet? Havent heard anything about him.
Aussie Bhoy August 24th, 2004, 06:24 PM Diamond didn't get a medal, but Adam Vella got a bronze in the same event, and Suzanne Balogh got a gold in the women's event.
Aussie Bhoy August 24th, 2004, 06:29 PM 2 more medals in the Cycling.
Bronze to Anna Meares in the sprint
Gold to Ryan Bayley who came from behind to win the sprint gold 2-1

Tony P August 24th, 2004, 06:39 PM A great final race to Ryan Bailey, I thought he'd lost it at the final straight. I reckon my brother and I woke everyone in our apartment block up with a piercing "YEAAAAAAH!!!" when Ryan came through in the end. :)
Only one more day of cycling so I don't know where the medals for Australia will come in from there on in...

Amaruu August 25th, 2004, 02:12 AM Ahh too bad about M. Diamond.
But 14 gold now...two more to match Sydney.
Homeroids August 25th, 2004, 04:40 AM There's always that dumb 50km walk. Might get a medal there. And then there is good chances in the baseball (silver guaranteed), womens basketball, and men's hockey. Girls water polo may get bronze but that's a tough one.
lozza August 25th, 2004, 05:22 AM Gday
Do we have any more realistic chances of gold this olympics ? What about cycling tonite ?
I hope Lauren Jackson carries on in the basketball and we beat the Yanks ! God that would be bloody fantastic to knock them off ! They are so Bloody Arrgant and Patriotic that it makes me sick and shits me to tears !!

Tony P August 25th, 2004, 09:37 AM I hope Lauren Jackson carries on in the basketball and we beat the Yanks ! God that would be bloody fantastic to knock them off ! They are so Bloody Arrgant and Patriotic that it makes me sick and shits me to tears !!

Aussie Bhoy August 25th, 2004, 11:21 AM Silver in the Womens Tri-athlon to Loretta Harrop.
She was just beaten with a few metres to go, I don't think she realised the Austrian women was closing so fast.

Tony P August 25th, 2004, 11:25 AM ^^ If there is a god, She is Austrian.
Homeroids August 25th, 2004, 12:31 PM Nah, the Austrian representative was born in Geelong and her family still lives there. We'll claim half the bloody medal in this case especially since her adopted country is almost spelt the same.
CULWULLA August 25th, 2004, 12:57 PM DAMN!!!! i cant believe harrop was winning the whole 2 hr race and lost it in the cruelest of circumstances!! with metres to go.
just like in Sydney Olympics!
man why didnt she keep looking around to see where the others where???then she could of put up the pace.
i dont think she looked once. did she think she was so far in front?
man some say silver is the worst of all medals! she deserved the bloody gold!
not happy
Aussie Bhoy August 25th, 2004, 06:25 PM Another Gold in the cycling to Graeme Brown and Stuart O'Grady in the men's madison, which is a damn confusing and complicated kind of race.

also this is Australia's best ever performance at an Olympics!!!
1 more medal then Atlanta!
A-brain August 26th, 2004, 01:11 AM That bloody 'Austrian' chick Kate Allen !!! What a rip !!! She married a bar-owner at an Austrian ski resort so now she runs for Austria ??? Puh-leeez .. so why didn't Bettina Hoy ride for Australia then (on an Aussie Horse) if she married an Aussie guy ???
Pass me a plate Roy !!!
http://thedream.seven.com.au/images/index_10.jpg
LOL - I got an SMS which said as much printed on the ticker on Channel 71 Digital Olympic Program Guide !! :D
Anyway at least we finally overtook those Judo-loving Jap's - but now Ruskia is breathing down our next jumping to 14 gold overnight (and way more total medals).
If we can finish 4th at these games behing USA,China,Russia it will be mission accomplished! Already our most successful games easily outside of Oz and equal best ever gold medal results!
rondeez August 26th, 2004, 04:46 AM also this is Australia's best ever performance at an Olympics!!!
1 more medal then Atlanta!
im sure u mean an "away" Olympics cause we won a tad more in Sideni.
Anyways Jana gave it her all. At one stage i thought she'd pull off the miracle but that Greek lady came storming past the final bend and Jana had nothing left in the tank.
Her time at last years world champs would have won her silver.
But she'll be back... bigger and better!
lozza August 26th, 2004, 05:37 AM Yeah , we have to be happy with last nites effort , but i though that we copped a bit of bad luck in that baseball game against Cuba actually ! Some of the decisions at crucial points of the game prooved to be really costly !
Oh well , at least the Septic Tanks ( Yanks ) didn't beat us ! If they had have beaten us (you guessed it ) it would have shit me to absolute tears

Amaruu August 26th, 2004, 05:43 AM 16 Gold medals at the time of writing...thats equal with the gold we won in Sydney which I believe is our greatest ever gold medal haul. 1 more to break the record.
What an effort from the Aussies, sitting in 3rd spot. Not bad for a country of 20 million.
CULWULLA August 26th, 2004, 06:21 AM yeah sydney was 16G,25S,17B-tot-58, compared to current-16G, 11S,15B-tot 42
So Gold is most important and weve equaled it with a few more to come, so this Olympics will be our most successful!
janas just 21, just wait for 4 more years of maturity. she will crap on her nearest rivals come beijing!
hey Opals beat NZ last night in lead up to semis, 99-55. still undefeated
http://www.sportal.com.au/photos/news/054384news.jpg
A-brain August 26th, 2004, 06:26 AM From olympics.com (great site!)
http://users.bigpond.net.au/speckled10/peryear.gif
And of course at the moment - Day 13 of 16 - we are:
2004 16 11 15 42
So it is clearly already our best ever Olympics outside Oz !!
Also the per-sport breakdown:
http://users.bigpond.net.au/speckled10/persport.gif
The Cycling category will be getting a big boost with 6-2-2 in these olympics !! 5 Gold in Track and 1 in Road !!
Amaruu August 26th, 2004, 07:35 AM Get rid of the outliers (statistical term for out of the ordinary which affects the average), those being the two times we have hosted the games in 1956 and 2000, and then look at our pevious best result in terms of gold medals won, which was 9 in Atlanta in 1996, then you start to realise how successful we have been in these games.
Also, not that alot of people will care, but Australia has for the past few Commonwealth Games been dominant. With the current form shown by our Game's team, together with the fact Australia hosts the Comm Games in 2006, it could be a muderisation as far as the medal table goes, moreso than ever before.
Amaruu August 26th, 2004, 07:41 AM Just looking at that medal table above, posted by A-brain, I was thinking who the hell won a gold medal for Australia in tennis? Then I realised...the Woodies, lol. Legends.
Also, I noted with interest no gold in Boxing. Jeff fenech would cringe looking at that table.
And 3 gold medals in hockey, thanks to our women. Be nice if the men won one this year to add to that. And obviously swimming is what we do best.
Mephisto August 26th, 2004, 08:52 AM Yeah, the next Comm Games are gonna be even more of a mickey mouse competition medal wise, Australia is gonna win a medal in every event. Last games AUS won over 200.
rondeez August 27th, 2004, 05:05 AM realistically i think we only have 2 more medals these olympics...
the mens hockey final... either a gold or silver.
and the womens basketball... they SHOULD get through to the final to verse the USA for a gold or silver.
WELL DONE AUSSIES!
Homeroids August 27th, 2004, 06:26 AM You are forgetting about the Kayacking. There is 3 chances for gold there. Oh, and the walk maybe.
CULWULLA August 27th, 2004, 01:46 PM oh well, we got disqualified from mens 50km walk. bummer
we even got a bronze today without trying. the womens sculls who came 4th got a bronze due to a team being done for drugs.
Homeroids August 28th, 2004, 03:49 AM Of course, the gold in men's hockey - finally. Good to get the monkey off the back and at the same time surpass Sydney with more gold in total.
CULWULLA August 28th, 2004, 08:33 AM yeah what a goal by jamie Dwyer!

Australian Nathan Baggaley has secured a silver medal in the final of the men's K1 500-metre kayak race on Lake Schinias
http://www.sportal.com.au/photos/news/055669tn.jpg
i reckon we have a great chance of beating USA tonight for gold medal in womens basketball.
http://www.sportal.com.au/photos/news/055637news.jpg
CULWULLA August 28th, 2004, 08:40 AM wow, we come from 5th to get silver in k1000 with clint robinson & nath Bageley!
Drunkill August 28th, 2004, 01:08 PM 2nd in the K2 rowing, dunno how far, and also 2nd in K1 rowing, gold in mens hocky, and we won against brazil in womens basketball. w00t for the aussies!
CULWULLA August 28th, 2004, 04:00 PM half time in opals v USA its usa 29-26. were not playing as good as we have been, , if we did we would be in front. anyway going ok. we must get ahead instead of trailing.
i think it our big guns get going we will win. will be close.
Fabian August 28th, 2004, 11:57 PM We lost 74-63 which is the best weve come to beating the Americans. Thats good. Hopefully over the next four years, we can build up the team to beat these folks.
The highlight of the day would have to be the Aussie's claming silver in the mens 4 x 400 metre relay where we took our first atheltics relay medal since 1956. :) America won as usual.
Also Mathew Helm took silver in the 10 metre springboard regulating a chinese diver to third and denying the favourite - Canada's Alexandre Despatie a medal. It means that all but one of divers will return back to oz with a medal.
Despite not winning gold, it was a good day overall for the Aussies.
The medal count now stands at 49, with 17 gold, 16 Silver & 16 Bronze.
Homeroids August 29th, 2004, 02:46 AM I thought the officiating of the basketball in this tornament was 3rd class. Generally speaking, Australia got the bulk of the bad calls and at really critical times. Put it this way, if those calls went Australia's way there probably would had been only a few points in it. Andrew Gaze was frustrated by the French ref who called the ball out by the Aussie's when it was so obvious it wasn't.
But, congrats to the US as I think they were probably the better team on the night but the officiating was a punch in the guts more for the Aussie's at the critical times.
Still, a silver night all up. 5 silvers and a real surprise in the 4x100m athletics. That came out of left field.
rondeez August 29th, 2004, 03:31 AM We had to get our Silver count up and the Aussies did that yesterday!
GOOD JOB!
The mens 4x400 would have to be the sweetest seeing it was unexpected.
also feel sorry for the only aus diver not taking home a medal.... steve barnett?
CULWULLA August 29th, 2004, 04:58 AM yeah, it was Opals most disapointing effort thus far. only if they had played like they did for whole of O games. with ref calls against them, they also seemed to miss alot of goals and never went for 3 pointers, which USA did all the time due to a our great defence.i really thought we had them when we were up by 4 points, but we let them in. damn!!!
i hate loosing!
as for 400m relays, real suprise! good stuff.
so i think medals are
G17
S16
B16
49
anymore to be won>>??
Homeroids August 29th, 2004, 02:59 PM Nup, end of story unless there is a miracle in the marathon. Still, 4th on the ladder aint to shabby for 20.17 million yobbo's :)
CULWULLA August 29th, 2004, 03:01 PM latest news is Petria Thomas is to carry flag in closing ceremony! what a games shes had at our greatest games ever!
TooFar August 29th, 2004, 10:44 PM Yeah, the next Comm Games are gonna be even more of a mickey mouse competition medal wise, Australia is gonna win a medal in every event. Last games AUS won over 200.
I could not agree more, 15 years ago it was a very even comp with the three big guns, the UK, Canada and Oz all collecting a similar grab of medals with the host team usual a few more. Now it is a joke and a complete waste of money, what does it prove to kick the ass of other commonwealth countries, we have out grown them in the sporting arena and should opt out.
I can not believe Victorians are getting so excited about hosting the games, I mean who really cares??? I hear Melbourne will hold the world tidily winks championships soon and I'm sure it will be the best ever!! Way to go Melbourne. :sleepy:
CULWULLA August 30th, 2004, 12:43 AM man what a crap way of ending the games with that irish guy tackling the leader in marathon. :bash:

CULWULLA August 30th, 2004, 02:33 AM another record. Australia have set a record for best performance by a nation after hosting the games previously!
lozza August 31st, 2004, 05:28 AM Gday,
The highlight of the games for me by far was seeing The Yanks losing to Argentina in the Semis of the Mens Basketball !
I loved that LEGEND Argentinian Player who "Slam Dunked" it right on that Yank at the very end of the game too ! What a Legend ! But most importantly , what an insult to the so called Dream Team !
Cheers

Cul, are you sure about that, surely the US after LA 1984 or Atlanta 1996 won more medals.
CULWULLA September 1st, 2004, 04:07 PM Cul, are you sure about that, surely the US after LA 1984 or Atlanta 1996 won more medals.
nope. USA failed both times to improve after they hosted games-
USA Tally
Los Angeles-G83 S61 B30 total-174
Seoul-G36 S31 B27 total-94 (post home games)
Atlanta-G44 S32 B25 total-101
Sydney-G39 S25 B33 total-97 (post home games)
As you can see after LA Games, USA only come home with half the medals & they came 3rd .
Also at the sydney games, USA failed again to improve ther home tally.
So Australiawinning more gold then previous home games is a fantastic feat!!!!
Aussie Bhoy September 1st, 2004, 04:39 PM Oh, you mean improved performance, after hosting a games.
On another matter, I'm never sure about how medals are ranked. Should it always be by Gold first, or by all medals?
Did a nation getting 1 Gold, have a better Olympics than a country with say 4 Silvers and a Bronze (such as UAE vs North Korea this year), or in the case of NZ with 5 medals (3 gold) being higher than Belarus with 15 medals (2 gold).

i guess 83 golds in LA due to the boycott of Russia and its allies.

its all about GOLD!! its always been listed in order of gold medals not how many bronze or silver.the way it should be. minor medals are not viewed as much. i reckon there should be a "tin" medal for 4th place! lol nothing worse then coming 4th amissing out on medals. The hardest 4th place must be marathon race!!
