This little office has made Tehran proud.
Vali Asr Commercial Office Building, Iran wins World’s Best Office Building at World Architecture Festival Awards 2010
- ‘It is a jewel of a building within an intense urban environment’ -
Vali-Asr Commercial Office Building, Iran, designed by Kelvan, Iran has won the ‘World’s Best Office Building’ award at the prestigious World Architecture Festival Awards (WAF Awards) 2010.
The two-storey commercial office building, located in a busy retail district in Tehran, is finished with a contrast of black and white longitudinally cut stones of Brazilian marble.
The presentation of the WAF Awards is taking place during the biggest global celebration of architecture - the World Architecture Festival, which is being held at the Centre Convencions International Barcelona (CCIB) this week.
It was chosen by some of the world’s most distinguished architects and renowned industry experts, beating off competition from a shortlist of 16 entries.
The jury said: “This small, highly refined project provides a sophisticated response to its urban context, and a surprising and intelligently crafted treatment of its principal material - marble - on both external and internal facades. This is jewel of a building within an intense urban environment.”
Speaking at the WAF Awards 2010 Paul Finch, WAF Programme Director, said: “World Architecture Festival brings international architecture to the forefront, against the backdrop of Barcelona’s breathtaking architecture. Yet again we received a huge response to the fiercely contested WAF Awards, with over 500 entries from 61 different countries. The geographical range and quality of this year’s designs were exceptionally high, with a great deal of entries from “new” economies, both by local architects and international practices. Our congratulations go to the winners for a project that is truly exceptional.”
The WAF Awards see unsung local buildings take on internationally acclaimed projects in what is the world’s biggest architecture contest. Unlike other architectural competitions, architects present their work in front of leading industry judges and a live public audience as they compete for the accolade of ‘World Building of the Year’.
This is the 3rd year the World Architecture Festival Awards have been presented. Previous winners include ‘World Building of the Year 2008’ - Luigi Bocconi University, Milan, designed by Irish practice Grafton Architects and ‘World Building of the Year 2009’ - Mapungubwe Interpretation Centre in South Africa, designed by Peter Rich Architects of Johannesburg.

dkhazenirad June 10th, 2011, 10:19 PM Ok so we need more, I was in a taxi one night near golhak I think it was?! And I saw either a new villa style minimalist building or renovated one. My god it was the most beautiful building I have ever seen in the world. The proportions were just right plus the old tree in the garden was nice softening the edges of the building.

Nimaa August 2nd, 2011, 10:15 PM I think Iranians have some of the weirdest tastes in architecture around the globe.
weird?
these designs are amazing. There is nothing weird about them.
TEHR_IR August 3rd, 2011, 04:28 PM why do they always use cheap materials to construct?!!
Persan August 3rd, 2011, 04:40 PM why do they always use cheap materials to construct?!!
Bigger profits, lack of safety protocols, and the sanctions.
ardeshir8 August 3rd, 2011, 07:42 PM why do they always use cheap materials to construct?!!
because it is iran and we are iranians.
PersianTakavar August 3rd, 2011, 08:02 PM because it is iran and we are iranians.
because this is iran and we are under sanction :)
ardeshir8 August 3rd, 2011, 08:04 PM because this is iran and we are under sanction :)
this sanction-shit is an iranian excuse. it is all because of iran and being iranians. the whole region is fucked up, arabs, armenians, pakis etc. are backwards as we are, lazy as we are, etc.
PersianTakavar August 3rd, 2011, 08:09 PM this sanction-shit is an iranian excuse. it is all because of iran and being iranians. the whole region is fucked up, arabs, armenians, pakis etc. are backwards as we are, lazy as we are, etc.

PersianTakavar August 3rd, 2011, 08:20 PM and why not having a strong management? why don't we have it?
what is going on in kashan and esfahan?

ardeshir8 August 3rd, 2011, 09:15 PM I am saying sanctions make us stronger. This is a fact. It hurts but it makes us stronger in a long term. I am not mixing anything like u are saying.

SoroushPersepolisi November 16th, 2011, 01:37 PM the last one isnt contemporary
its childish hideous monstrosity style
architecture
the first is nice but more traditional looking

peykantm November 16th, 2011, 07:28 PM mina building in tehran, it replaced an ugly building, redevelopment
look how simple, yet beautiful it is, why build some of that hideous crap in iran when u can do this ?
Because quite frankly in Iran (and other countries) private developers and owners only care about money or if they do, they have poor taste.
They either want flashy, or cheap.
SoroushPersepolisi November 16th, 2011, 10:24 PM yea
but i mean alot of these structures arent overly expensive and many might even be cheaper to construct
the city council also doesnt give a sh*t

Herbicide January 22nd, 2012, 09:13 PM Wow! If Bank Mellat goes ahead with this design on all its branches after this trial study then its really going to make a huge impact on Iranian streets (imagine 3000 of these!). Maybe it could force a wider acceptance and usage of contemporary architecture in Iran.
SoroushPersepolisi January 22nd, 2012, 09:52 PM ^^ its not that contemporary architecture isnt accepted, its that the municipality and architects dont know how to make good pieces of contemporary architecture
what is sadly not accepted is traditional architecture, people think its backwards :bash:

SoroushPersepolisi July 28th, 2012, 05:31 PM sadly, the amazing snack bar in esfahan has been destroyed, one of the people says (who lived there and has been in the area) that the place has been torn down and cleaned up since it was too much of a hangout place for youngsters and you know what that leads to, shame, this was such a nice piece
http://a1.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/s720x720/251956_423268181056775_1602520619_n.jpg

Herbicide July 28th, 2012, 10:39 PM WTF!:mad2: What stupid F'ing idiots!! As if it was the snack bar's fault for looking too modern that young people hooked up there. As if they won't hook up somewhere else now. And what was the crime of the snack bar anyway!? Looking too cool while selling snacks!? If they broke some law then why not just close it? Why send in a F'ing bulldozer? Actually I don't want to understand. I just wish whoever did this, cancer or a heart attack.
SoroushPersepolisi July 29th, 2012, 12:02 AM i know, it makes absolutely no sense, funny thing is that the design got an award and the facade was chosen as a modern art heritage in esfahan
i really dont understand the need to ruin the facade, just change the god dam n function of the building if a tea house is that irritating for the f'n authorities

iran would become better in terms of cities 10 fold in a matter of a decade

As you say, the avg person isn't going to dish out on luxuries like imported cherry hardwood etc... You can easily build a modern house with what's available in Iran. I would personally use a lot of marble as it's relatively cheap in Iran, but I would go with the best kind. Here marble is expensive as hell, not so in Iran. Or if you want you can go super modern and build everything out of concrete. All people need is a little taste and imagination. Most of the pre-rev ppl have NO taste. Think about your fathers for a second  (of course all over the world people think their parents are dorks, but in Iran the divide is a lot more noticiable b/c the post rev kids are Westernized and ever since the internet came, kids are even more in touch with the rest of the world).
The shit rectangular brick prisons the avg guy calls home will hopefully go away in future generations as younger people start building their own homes.

modern needs to become a bit more mainstream
less "lux", afterall, modernism is supposed to ve for the masses

Most Iranian buildings don't look like this. Very little attention has gone into the aesthetics usually, and half the time, if they have really thought about it, you wish they hadn't. :( Take a look around some other threads.

Sorry, I misunderstood what you were saying. I thought it was out of character for you. :)
these buildings make up .5% of iran, the other .5 are historic and the remaining 99% .....
I think it will get better. I think the people who are responsible for the worst buildings are mostly less educated, over fifties generation men with absolutely no taste. They will probably tell the architect exactly what they want: "I want something that shows real wealth, class and culture, you know all fancy white Greco-Roman pillars and stuff like on that building over there. But also I want it kind of modern to show that we are very forward thinking and stuff, so combine it with lots of that shiny aluminium cladding and mirrored glass stuff like on the front of that building. Yeah that's what I want! Can you do that!?" :D
Architect: "Sigh. I suppose so..":(
Hopefully younger generations of university educated men and women as they become more established will have better taste, find what they like in contemporary and simple styles, get an architect that they like and let them have more freedom. Also people are going to get sick of what they see all the time and the styles will change. I think today's unfortunate trend is a reaction against growing up amongst grey, modernist, sixties and seventies buildings and cheap, unattractive, humble, brick buildings with no style.
SoroushPersepolisi November 12th, 2012, 11:22 PM u need heavy restructions by the municipality
dont forget many of irans top architects were and still are "over 50s", infact ,any of these peojects are still by older architects like farmarz sharifi
not to mention the likes of farmanfarmayan, kamran diba etc
after the rev when city planning and urban planning etc went down the drain , the current monstrosity happened
the transition generation is mostly to blame, not the older one
i dont evn know what garbage they were taught in the 80s and 90s lol

I don't agree. look to UAE or qatar's building and all the ugly aluminiums towers or building in iran. Except very very few exception, there is a big difference between gulf's countries and iran

kyle2 November 23rd, 2012, 05:35 PM well they just spent their money on fancy and useless building, but they're not technically a country, a nation that provide and create, educate people to do things by themselves, they're just there to buy others people stuffs.
