View Full Version : THE top 20 stores Atlanta needs!!

For Atlanta to be the top retail destination in the southeast (after Houston and Miami). It needs to add some stores not in the market. Lenox Square is able to add more stores, if the mall expands. Phipps doesn't have a lot of room. An expansion is the key. Not a huge expansion, many only 50,000 sq. ft. or so.

Anyways the TOP 25 stores I think:
Dior- One of the world's top designers, Dior is simply one of the best
Luca Luca- a fashion forward designer who is opening soon in Houston
Thomas Pink- British designer known for his shirts
Wolford- German based luxury hoisery brand
Janie & Jack- The upscale store for kids, part of the Gymboree store group, operates one Atlanta area store at NorthPoint Mall
Jimmy Choo- Malaysian born shoe designer, VERY expensive shoes are his specialty, $900 for PUMPS, yes this world is CRAZY!
MaxStudio- Womens store for sportswear
Just Cavalli-a spinoff of Roberto Cavalli's famed designer stores
Zara- HIP Spanish retailer, which would do good in Atlanta, Zara is the place for clothes!
Eileen Fisher- Contemporary womens fashion
Sony Style- New Sony Stores are appearing everywhere, AMAZING no store in Atlanta yet, the stores sell SONY electronics
Lucky Brand- Mens and Womens apparel store
Crabtree & Evelyn- Premier toiletry store
Lladro- Luxury crystal store
Swarovski- Crystal jewelry and fine accessories
Movado- Luxury watch brand
Lalique- Expensive store for crystal
Bose- Famous for its home audio systems and speakers
LEGO- The namesake store home to LEGO
Love Sac- "THE" place for bean bags!! LOL
Swatch- Swatch watches are awesome, I have one, Swatch should join the excellent mix of stores at Lenox Square
Hold Everything- A new organization store from Williams Sonoma
Sur La Table- cookware store much like Williams Sonoma, but a little more upscale
Yankee Candle Co.- An obvious candle store, can't believe it's not at Lenox Square
Hanna Anderrson- Swedish kids store, has been opening in the US, this is like an upscale Gymboree

COMMENTS?? Like any of those stores? Zara, Movado, Sony Style are a must for Lenox!

As for some of these, I thought I've seen them before (maybe they closed), as for the majority of them, except maybe Sony Style (I do like gadgets) - I would be perfectly fine if we never get any. The majority I've never heard, but being a non fashion-obsessive person who lives on a limited income (middle class, not a limitless income), I'm mostly biased.

As for shopping, Ikea is coming next year & more shopping options inside the city as well means I'll be perfectly satisfied with shopping.

I don't Atlanta has had or does have any of those!! Unless I'm wrong, THERE IS HOWEVER, a SWAROVSKI store at Perimter Mall! Love Sac and Crabtree & Evelyn have a few metro locations, so WHY NOT Lenox Square!

So you wouldn't be in SUPPORT of an expansion of Lenox Square? The mall for its size right now is EXTREMELY successful. If you know about mall sizes, it is 1,485,000. Smaller than Houston Galleria, but remember it shares retailers with Phipps Plaza which is 824,000. FOR A GRAND TOTAL SQ. FT. of the two malls at= 2,309,000 SQ. FT. :eek2: :eek2:

Even with my bias toward Houston, I will have to say detroitboy, I don't think you are giving Atlanta's "prowess" for fashion enough credit. If I know nothing else about Atlanta, from experience, I know Atlantan's love fashion and make it obvious.

A lot of those stores are indeed well known in the fashion circles or to a lot of people that pay attention to a lot of those sorts of things, but I wouldn't necessarily consider Atlanta "chicken feed" because it doesn't yet have them.

*note* Ikea has been in Houston for a while now and although I have enjoyed my visits, I'm at a point where I think it's a tad bit overrated, and Atlantan's will feel the same before long. Many times things aren't always all their cracked up to be.

I'm surprised Atlanta doesn't have many of those stores.. Houston has most of them, with exception of Thomas Pink, Just Cavalli (which I LOVE and it would be great if one opened in H-Town), Eileen Fisher, LEGO, Lladro, Swarovski, and Bose.. unless I'm mistaken. I don't care for the last three anyway.

Sad but true - downtown Atlanta has the worst retail section for any city it's size & including many that are smaller. And it's not going to improve - Atlantic Station (as stated not in downtown) will attract more retail to the top end of Midtown. I think we'll just have to consolve ourselves with the fact that downtown does have a promising future, but it won't be for retail - most likely entertainment & residential.

Most people know about Zara in Miami...we have 2 stores, one at Dadeland Mall (which has a Movado and Lucky Brand too), and another at Aventura Mall (which is 3 levels)

I love Zara...I make at least one trip every month

we have most of the others on the list (some of which there are 2 locations)

I've heard of definite plans that H&M is opening in Miami (from someone who works for the company

I was doing some research about the size of Lenox Square and finally found it on simon.com, the mall is 1,485,000 sq. ft. TOTAL
So I wanted to know how much mall retail space was and figured it out: TAKE A LOOK

ANCHORS:
Neiman Marcus- 150,000 sq. ft.
Bloomingdale's- 280,000 sq. ft.
Rich's-Macy's- 250,000 sq. ft.

So the mall retail space comes to an AMAZING 805,000 sq. ft.
ARE THESE NUMBERS CORRECT?

All HMV stores in the US have closed (Boston, Atlanta, a few in NY, and Philadelphia, if I remember correctly). It HMV was a subsidiary of HMV Canada, which itself is a subsidiary of HMV (UK). I guess the stores weren't competitive enough with Tower or Virgin. There's a Virgin in Vancouver, and one opening in Toronto, but both Towers in Canada (both in Toronto) closed due to the financial difficulties of its parent. HMV was too much competition for them, go figure!

I hate malls in the suburbs because it seems to cut off neighborhoods completly and they are massive and surrounded usually by a giant parking lot. It seems like a dated concept and not a good idea for the modern day unless you are in a climatically unpleasant area. Most malls eventually turn into a track for the elderly.

2. Foot traffic
3. Word of mouth among friends
4. Motorcoaches visit malls
5. Simply, malls produce more revenue for retailers because it combines everything in one place, Lenox Square is a perfect example with 3 dept. stores, 30 restaurants and specialty food places, and 200 other stores!
Now if there were no Lenox mall where would all those stores be?

Those rental rates are impossible.

I just asked my mom who is the general manager at our local Dillard's and she laughed at the idea of paying $1100 per square foot for space in ANY mall. Stores would be unable to pay their rent, let alone make a profit.

HELL YEAH!!!! Now you're talking my language. JITB is also in SC - closest one to us is in Anderson. And In & Out Burger are some good burgers ("shut the fuck up donny" - Big Lebowski quote), I try to drop by one when I go to San Diego - though I didn't go to one last week when I was there. Another mean burger joint is Whattaburger, they're from Texas.

I am proud of my Krystals - and Atlanta is home to the Ghetto Burger. It's made at a small little diner on a run down stretch of Memorial Drive in South Dekalb called Ann's Snack Shop. It's a furiously greasy delicious bite of a heart attack.

On the street....I agree that a mall is a quickly prepared structure that can remedy a space problem for many stores ... but someone like lets say "Yankee Candle" paying that much for a store is retarded, when one can have a store front for just as much...but your take on it definatly makes sense.

True, about what you said about Yankee Candle., they open less stores in upscale stores. But look at Claire's, they have a 500 sq. ft. in Lenox Square and is one of their top locations.

So even though rent maybe high, retailers make a profit by RIPPING US OFF!!

Also, they don't accept chickens for payment - the manager informed me of that after trying to squeeze our highest prize chick down the coin slot. Where are those statistics from?!

That CAN'T be right.

BAL HARBOUR SHOPS RANKS #1 IN WOMEN’S WEAR DAILY’S ANNUAL TOP 15 LISTING

Bal Harbour, FL – Women’s Wear Daily (WWD) ranked Bal Harbour Shops # 1 as the most productive shopping center in the U.S. in their annual survey, based on average sales per square foot. According to the productivity survey, Bal Harbour Shops generates more than three times the national average, with sales of $1,350 per square foot. Bal Harbour Shops is one of Greater Miami’s most visited shopping attractions, with tourists regularly accounting for at least fifty percent of their customer mix. The Travel Industry Association of America cites shopping as the number one activity for visitors to the United States, as well as for domestic travelers.

Despite challenging times for the retail industry, WWD attributes the powerhouse revenues of the most successful malls to some shared characteristics: "They are popular tourism destinations, filled with high-end retailers who have a captive audience, and/or are located in a densely populated area." Sizing up retail’s top performers, WWD lists The Forum Shops in Las Vegas as second, Ala Monana Center in Honolulu as third, The Americana in Manhasset, New York as fourth, and South Coast Plaza in California as fifth.

Given the proliferation of more than 45,000 malls nationwide and an up-tick in development of luxury retail centers in most major cities, it is extraordinary that three Miami-area shopping centers made the coveted top-15 list: with Bal Harbour Shops leading the way, Dadeland ranks tenth with $690 sales per square foot; the Aventura Mall ranks twelfth, with $680 sales per square foot. The average U.S. mall achieves sales of about $340 per square foot.

In 1965, Bal Harbour Shops’ owner/developer Stanley Whitman created a shopping hall of fame, attracting the most famous names in fashion and generating record sales that would become the industry’s benchmark for luxury retailing. With a 37-year track record of success, Bal Harbour Shops remains true to its heritage to please the most discerning customers from all over the world, helping Bal Harbour Village to become “Florida’s most fashionable destination.”

Bal Harbour Village is located in Greater Miami (equidistant from Miami International and Fort Lauderdale International Airports) at the northern tip of Miami Beach, and features two oceanfront resorts: the Sheraton Bal Harbour Beach Resort and the Sea View Hotel, across the street from world-renown Bal Harbour Shops.

And where do you live? Dallas is not so bad, hey it's population is increasing so some people do like it!

I lived in Downtown and in Lewisville, near the lake, in a brand new great centex cookie cutter home...booooo.... LOL I guess its for some people but It sure as hell wasnt for me and my friends =) (haha I hated it so I dragged my friend out to keep me company...she left after 4 months)

I always saw Highland Park Village as sort of out of place, not with NorthPark Center or Galleria Dallas, limited but upscale stores. They should add a Barneys New York to spiff up things even more!

Sometimes the smaller open-air centers are the best IMO. The super regional malls are cool, but places like Highland Park, University Village (Seattle), Century City ss, Highland Village (Houston) and Coconut Grove are the places I like. Oh and of course downtowns like New York, San Francisco, Vancouver, Chicago and Seattle are the most enjoyable to shop.

Lenox Square probably would not add a Chuck E Chessie's because they only like to attract upscale stores. Chuck E Cheesie does better in the suburbs!
So that's why you mentioned that Subway is going in the food court, now that's what I call upscale foodcourt fare!

Just watch out. There salesman work on commission. I thought I was talking to a used car salesman when I was there recently. I did buy my 37" plasma tv there, with plenty of back and forth negotiating.

Would you all believe that this thread was the 6th link that popped up on a Google search for "Whattaburger Birmingham"? Yeah, I'm pathetic - but I'm looking forward to a short drive to B-ham for Whattaburger, I just wish Anderson was closer & I would go to Jack In The Box more often :) Not sure if Chubbydecker posts anymore, but he earlier stated how stoked he would be if In-N-Out or FatBurger came to Atlanta, well - we got Fatburger now!

And I'm fine with that! Look at Midtown Manhattan and Downtown NY.

Are you serious?

Bose and Lego has stores in the Discover Mills OUTLET MALL, yankee Candle is in a couple malls here but who cares. Most of the same merchandise is available at every department store anyway so somehow Atlantans will just have to get by and hope for a better tommorrow.

Has anybody seen those commercials for Jack in the Box where they're advertising their new name for french fries? Jack is speaking to a guy in Paris, while Jack is in Houston and has the downtown skyline as the background... does that mean that Jack in the Box is based in Houston?
I think they have differnt backdrops for regional cities, like New York City, Dallas, Atlanta, Miami, Los Angeles, Seattle, Pheonix, etc.

I don't think you can get Jack In The Box in many places besides Texas and California, other states may have a few, but not many have them. There are none in the Northeast.

AubieTurtle
April 20th, 2005, 01:51 AM
I don't know if they still have them, but Michigan use to have Jack In The Box. This was a long time ago back when they had a clownhead for you to yell your orders into on the drive-through.

As far as Detroit "Boy" goes, he/she claimed to really be a slutty girl and then disappeared. Maybe he/she moved to Atlanta, works at the mall and is too busy getting picked up at Mako's to post anymore.

Thomas Pink is nice, but Charles Tyrwhitt is much better quality. Both are based on Jermyn Street in London. Otherwise a good list.

Yes, Whataburger is coming to the 'Ham. They're starting out with 3 but want to have 25 within the next year.

Also, instead of Bose you should have listed Bang & Olufsen. They're a much more high-end, more aesthetically appealing, and better sounding company. They may already have a store in Atlanta, I don't know (I know they've got one in Miami).

As long as two independent retailers of any style open up for any chain I'll be happy. That being said, I love Pink and I went to highschool with Nadia Swarovski (wotta sweetheart-she was one of my editors on the student literary mag.) who is driving the company in a solid direction.

In general, I think high end cool-young UK retailers could do very well in Midtown. But the MOST IMPORTANT question is what retail can make Dowtown vibrant for everyone instead of being the necessary evil of a crossroads? Let's establish a point to being at Five Points.

It is unfortunate - some retailers try out the waters for a while, then close up shortly after (Office Depot's mini-store). But there is a large retail strip that serves the immediate lower income neighborhood south of Five Points. It includes 'urban oriented' clothing, music, etc.

Yeah, it sucks. I'm sure the Centennial Hill projects will bring some retail to downtown though.
