mdubest November 26th, 2010, 06:29 PM Societal concern :S. Mohan, Director, National Institute of Technical Teachers Training and Research, Chennai, addressing a seminar at Gandhigram on Thursday.
DINDIGUL: Sustainable development can be achieved only through change in policies, system of work and in existing technologies, said S. Mohan, Director, National Institute of Technical Teachers Training and Research, Chennai. He was inaugurating a seminar on ‘sustainable technologies and management' held at Gandhigram Rural Institute at Gandhigram near here on Thursday.
Education and communication should be effectively used to build capacity of communities, he pointed out. Absence of give and take policy among people was a main hindrance for any sustainable development. He gave examples from Sangam literature, when water and other resources were shared among communities.
Taking sophisticated technologies to rural people by higher educational institutions such as IITs, were missing. There was also an urgent need to empower people to participate in the decision making process. Education at all levels alone would shape the world of tomorrow equipping individuals and societies with skills, knowledge and values to live and work in a sustainable manner, the Director opined.
An effective educational method should foster respect for earth's natural resources, human and economic welfare, he added. The world needed more citizens who are well aware of environmental sustainable development. Education alone would pave way and serve the purpose to save the earth, Dr. Mohan added. Vice-Chancellor MS Ramasamy said that future development programmes should be planned with emphasis on sustainability.

From now on, farmers in the district need not go to Madurai to know the quality and condition of the harvested seeds, as a seed testing laboratory, first of its kind in the district, has started functioning in the town.
Set up under the National Agricultural Development Programme (NADP), the laboratory has started functioning at Thirumalaikeni Nagar at Chennamanaickenpatti near Collectorate.
When contacted here on Monday, Agricultural Officer of the laboratory T. Thenmozhi said that main purpose of the seed testing lab was to analyse the quality of the harvested seed.
At present, the lab can test only service samples that are being sent voluntarily by seed producers and farmers to confirm the quality of seeds, as it is awaiting the notification from the government.
After receiving the notification, the certified samples that are drawn by seed certification officer from processed seed lot and sent by them to the lab, and official samples that are drawn by authorised seed inspectors from all seed sales points, will also be analysed. A sum of Rs.30 will be charged for analysis of all qualities of service samples.
Seeds and grains
Even as seeds are grains, not all grains are seeds because they possess certain qualities that enable them to grow.
This lab will check those qualities like germination level, moisture content, physical purity and other distinguished variety (ODV), pest and disease infestation.
If grains brought by farmers gratify minimum level of these qualities, they will be treated as seeds.
Otherwise, they will be used as grains only.
While germination test will ensure planting value of the seed, moisture content will determine quality of seed and seed purity decides quality and market value.
The ODV test will help detect if there are any mixture of other varieties with one particular variety.
Mixture of other varieties will decrease seed quality and create problems in developing into seedlings in the field, she says.
Send samples
Ms. Thenmozhi appealed to farmers and seed producers to send their service samples immediately before using them as seeds.
The samples could be sent directly either to Ms. Thenmozhi or to P. Annakodi, Agricultural Officers running the laboratory.
Results would be issued to the person or to the firm directly.

A new paper production facility is all set to be inaugurated at the Kagithapuram factory of the Tamil Nadu Newsprint and Papers Limited (TNPL) on Wednesday by Deputy Chief Minister M.K. Stalin. Set up under the Mill Expansion Plan, the state-of-the-art “Paper Machine 3'' has cost the public sector major Rs.1,000 crore.
The machine has a 5.45 metre deckle and operates at a speed of 1,100 meter per minute.
With an annual production capacity of 1.55 lakh tonnes, the machine is capable of producing high quality pigmented and surface sized papers. The device, supplied by the noted German firm VOITH, is advantageous as it consumes less fresh water, energy and power for its operations.
The process of reuse of chemical bagasse in the pulping line, completed simultaneously as part of the Plan, is aimed to increase pulp production from 400 tonnes to 550 tonnes a day. A power boiler, with a steam generation capacity of 125 tonnes per hour, has been installed to take care of the additional steam requirement.
The TNPL, which commenced its operation in the year 1984, has completed 26 years of operation. From its initial installed capacity of 90,000 tonnes per annum to the present level of four lakh tones per annum, the TNPL has come a long way in eco friendly paper making.
Three new projects
The Deputy Chief Minister will also lay the foundation stone for three new projects, including establishment of a mini cement plant as part of lime sludge and fly ash management at an outlay of Rs. 67 crore; installing a de-inking plant with a capacity of up to 300 tonnes a day at a cost of Rs.175 crore and another project to revamp the steam and power system at a cost of Rs.135 crore. The three new projects are expected to become operational by March 2012.
50,000 saplings
Mr. Stalin will also inaugurate the kicking off of a green cover campaign by TNPL, with the planting of at least 50,000 saplings along the Karur-Coimbatore and Karur-Tiruchi stretches of National Highway 67. The paper major hopes to complete the task before the end of the month.
With a large number of equipment installed in TNPL being a first of its kind, the company has been tagged as the second largest producer of writing paper in the country.

A plasma separation centre would be set up in Anna Nagar at a cost of Rs. 400 crore, said T. Sampath, Consultant, Voluntary Blood Donations, Tamil Nadu AIDS Control Society.
Presiding over World Blood Donors Day celebration here on Thursday, he said that blood banks had been set up in 231 primary health centres in the State. There were 203 registered blood banks in the State — 138 run by the government and 64 of private parties. The government sanctioned Rs.1.36 crore to intensify campaign in the State on blood donation using mobile blood bank.
The bank had a consultant, laboratory assistant, an assistant, a driver and his assistant. Blood donation camps were being conducted at district headquarters between 9.30 a.m. and 1 p.m., and the campaign in the evenings.
Flagging off the mobile blood bank, Superintendent of Police K. Chandrasekar said the blood donation was the only mode of getting blood to help the needy. “We cannot create blood. Blood donation should become a people's movement. The government has been honouring persons donating blood thrice or four times a year,” he added.
Joint Director of Health Services T. Jayabal said that the goal was to make the blood available to the needy within an hour. Quantum of blood donation rose to 92 per cent in 2009 which was 57.3 per cent in 2002. Level of HIV transmission through donors had been brought down to 0.08 per cent from 0.3 per cent in 2002. The blood collected from donors would undergo tests at various levels to check viruses of HIV, jaundice, venereal diseases and malaria.
In Dindigul alone 1,942 units of blood had been collected from donors through 31 camps in 2010-11, he added. To promote blood donation, two vans — one from Madurai and another from Chennai — started their mission on June 14. The van at Dindigul had covered six districts and would cover 10 more. About 200 units of blood were collected so far.

Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited has opened a new horizon for Dindigul one of the industrially backward districts in the state.
An engineering cluster, first of its kind in the state, commissioned at E. Chithur village near Eriyode to manufacture components and supply to the BHEL, Tiruchi, is a new chapter in the history of industrial development in the district.
Even the district is famous for cheap labour and well-connected by road and rail facilities, Dindigul suddenly became industrially most back ward one and haven for jobless workers owing to malfunctioning of tanneries, dying of lock industry, paralysing of spinning mills and trampling of handloom weaving industries – all were labour intensive ones.
The engineering clusters offer a glimmer of hope and confidence to administrators, small and tiny industrialists and young entrepreneurs on revival of industrial activities and open up of new horizons for business activities.
Sprawling over 95 acres, 30 km away from Dindigul town, the engineering cluster has a massive training and sophisticated testing centre and a common workshop on 15 acres. Twenty five workshops have come up and many of them started functioning. All sheds are spacious to meet all industrial requirements. The entrepreneurs of this cluster have started manufacturing components for boiler unit of the BHEL only. The BHEL engineers had trained the work force of these industrial units from manufacturing to packing and transportation.
The BHEL did not stop making buy-back arrangement and training to transform cluster employees into a skilled work force. It went one step further and offered funds to the tune of Rs.4.75 crore to 19 entrepreneurs to meeting their installation costs and purchase of machinery. The BHEL will continuously offer technical advice, technical drawing for components manufacture for the next three-year period. The Khadi Village and Industries Commission too was ready to sanction loan to more entrepreneurs of this cluster that would generate employment opportunities in rural areas and prevent migration of labour from rural areas. The entrepreneurs' role was to make initial investments on raw materials and labour only and sell finished products to the BHEL.
All units in the cluster have common machineries and some have one or two special and occasionally using modern machine, most essential ones to finish the component.
The cluster has also approached the Central government for further expansion of the cluster to expand its activities. They have approached the Central Government for Rs.10 crore funds with 75 per cent subsidy under special cluster scheme, to buy sophisticated machines.”
The action plans in pipeline: Production of parts like valves independently and supply back to BHEL.
Creation of more structures with effective participation of corporates and public sector undertakings will soon make Dindigul an engineering hub.

madurakarenda December 8th, 2011, 04:59 PM Chennai, Dec. 8:
Exports of jute from India touched an all-time high of Rs 1,854 crore during 2010-11, more than doubling from the Rs 859 crore recorded in 2009-10. The National Jute Board attributes this growth to good promotion and pricing, besides product innovation.
The primary objective of the National Jute Board, supported by its branch offices in Chennai, New Delhi and Hyderabad, is to engage in better marketing and sale of jute.
As part of its activities, a special advanced training on ‘Design and Product Development of Jute bags' will be held in Chennai from December 16-23. This is being funded the International Jute Study Group, with the support of the National Centre for Design and Product Development. Over 30 participants from Chennai, Madurai, Coimbatore and Bangalore will participate in this programme, says Mr T. Ayyappan, Market Promotion Officer, Southern region, National Jute Board.
Recently, a marketing training programme for jute entrepreneurs was organised in Madurai by the Small Industries Product Promotion Organisation along with Madurai Productivity Council and sponsored by National Jute Board.
The programme trained potential entrepreneurs and self-help groups in marketing, sales and selling techniques, time management, innovation, IT, VAT, crisis management and packaging. Participants were from Virudhunagar, Dindigul, Sivakasi, Madurai and Sivagangai.

Yes, the bus stand should have a dedicated complex for commercial activity, else it would be of the present state only :bash:
The bypass road from Madurai to Karur is a nice place for the new bus stand that has 4 laned connectivity and Trichy and Coimbatore could also be connected easily from that place

Chettinad Cement Corporation is mulling a capacity expansion at its Karikkali plant in Dindigul in Tamil Nadu. The company is proposing to expand the manufacturing capacity at this plant from 4.5 million tonnes per year to 7.0 million tonnes a year.
Besides this expansion of cement capacity , Chettinad is planning to increase the capacity of its captive power plant from 48 MW to 78 MW. Total land required for the project is 132.76 hectares. The combined cost of the project is Rs 565 crore.
The company received the Terms of Reference (ToR) from the union environment ministry in March this year and a public hearing for the project was called for by Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) on March 21.
CMIE's projects monitor said that the company is implementing a 5 million tonne per annum cement plant in Chincholi in Gulbarga district in Karnataka investing Rs 1800 crore. It is also setting up a cement grinding unit in Ahuj in Solapur in Maharashtra and a 2 million tonne grinding unit in Vishakapatnam in Andhra Pradesh.

jayak914 July 31st, 2012, 06:39 AM UltraTech mulls massive cement complex in Tamil Nadu's Karur
CHENNAI: Ultratech Cement, park of the Aditya Birla group is mulling a massive 5.50 million tonnes per annum integrated cement complex in Karur, Dindigul district in Western Tamil Nadu.
The investment details are not known, but industry sources say it could be in the region of Rs 5000 crore minimum.
Documents accessed by TOI indicates that Samruddhi Cement, now part of UltraTech Cement is planning a 5.50 million tonne cement plant, a 4.5 million tonne per annum clinker facility, a 3X25 MW captive power plant for the complex, a 15 MW waste heat recovery project in Karur, in Dindigul district.
Ultra tech is already in the process of implementing several expansion projects including the 3.0 million tonne cement plant at Nawalgarh in Rajastan with an investment of Rs 2500 crore, a 3.5 million tonne plant at Satna in Madhya Pradesh with Rs 2,200 crore investment and a 4.25 million tonne plant at Malkhed in Gulbarga district in Karnataka with a cumulative investment of Rs 3000 crore, CMIE's projects monitor said.
Though the Tamil Nadu plant will not come any time soon, the process to be ready has begun, sources said. "South India is in cement surplus state.
There is nearly 30% more capacity than the demand. In our view, demand-supply mismatch will remain for at least another 3 to 4 years.
No prudent investor will create fresh capacities in this region. Maybe UltraTech is planning for capacities beyond 2017," industry sources said. The capacity in South is around 100 million tonnes while the demand is only 70 million tonnes.

Chennai, Feb 2:
Direct selling FMCG company Amway India today said it is setting up an over Rs 500-crore greenfield manufacturing facility at Nilakottai in southern Tamil Nadu.
Land had been acquired for the project and is expected to be launched by ‘mid-2015’ at Nilakottai in Dindigul district, and a memorandum of understanding has been signed with the state government. The company is awaiting the single-window clearance for the project.
The company has invested over Rs 500 crore on the project, Amway India Managing Director and CEO William Scott Pinckney said here.
Speaking to reporters here during the launch of the company’s new health range products for women, he said Amway is targeting “net sales revenue of $1 billion in India by 2020“.
“It (the unit) is about capacity enhancement to cater to the $1 billion market by 2020 and it will make health and beauty products,” he said.
In 2012, Amway India clocked a turnover of Rs 2,288 crore, the company said.
It announced the launch of three products under its flagship ‘Nutrilite’ category. Nutrilite Hair, Skin and Nails, Nutrilite Tri-Iron and Folic and Nutrilite Black Cohosh and Soy, aimed at different health segments ranging from haircare to “overall well-being” of women during menopause, the company said.
These will be available to consumers by this month end or beginning of March, it added.
murlee February 3rd, 2013, 06:59 PM Amway unit to churn Rs 2,500 cr worth products
Amway upcoming manufacturing facility near Madurai in Tamil Nadu will have a capacity to produce products worth Rs 2,500 crore per annum. Once the facility gets operational, the company will be producing all its products locally.
The company has acquired 49 acres of land at Nilakottai near Madurai. It will be developing 25 acres of the land initially and leaving the rest for capacity expansion at a later stage. Amway India will invest Rs 500 crore on the facility, which will produce health and beauty products.
After receiving the required government clearances, the construction work will start in three to four weeks and is expected to get operational by mid-2015, William Scott Pinckney, MD and CEO, Amway India said.
“The facility will have a capacity to produce Rs 2,500 crore worth products an year. The products are mainly meant for the Indian market. We might also look at exporting them to neighbouring markets like Sri Lanka and Bangladesh at a later point of time. Currently 95 per cent of our products are being domestically manufactured at our contract manufacturing plants. Products under the super premium beauty brand Artistry, which are currently being imported, also will be manufactured here with the new facility getting operational. Thus 100 per cent of the products will be locally produced,” he said.
By 2020, the company looks at doubling its turnover to over Rs 5,000 crore, growing at a CAGR of around 20 per cent. In 2012, the company clocked a turnover of Rs 2,288 crore, registering a growth of 7 per cent over last year’s Rs 2,130 crore. The parent company has grown to $11.5 billion in 2012.
“We have managed to grow the profits by 13 per cent during these inflationary times despite increasing the prices only by three per cent in the past two years. We could cut the import costs by procuring raw materials indigenously and we have been prudent with the real estate on offices and warehouses,” said Pinckney.
The company also has been seeing traction in e-commerce sales. The online business contributed to Rs 626 crore in 2012.

DINDIGUL, April 11, 2013
Mixed response to making Dindigul a municipal corporation
The State government’s announcement of upgrading the 150-year-old Dindigul Municipality into a Corporation has evoked a mixed response.
On becoming a Corporation, the Municipality is expected to witness a 10-fold increase in size. After annexing the nine villages — Pallapatti, Thottanuthu, Adiyanuthu, Chettinaickenpatti, Ponnimandurai, Seelapadi, Balakrishnapuram, Pillayarnatham and Kurumbapatti — the total area of the new Corporation will be around 110.4 sq. km.
The population is likely to rise up to 4 to 5 lakhs from the present 2.07 lakhs, said Municipal Commissioner T. Kumar.
The announcement was made in the Assembly on Wednesday. It would take at least six to seven months to complete the process, he said.
The Collectorate, District Sports Complex and many areas that were under the control of panchayats and owned by the municipality will be annexed to the Corporation area.
The long-pending demand of shifting the Kamarajar central bus stand to the outskirts of the town will become a reality soon, officials said. There was not enough land for bus stand expansion now.
The civic body expansion will pave the way for shifting the bus stand to the outskirts where a big facility could be constructed. The existing bus stand could be used to serve town buses, they said.
People at annexed villages will get protected drinking water, wide roads, streetlights and other urban civic amenities in a short period of time, the officials said.
Autorickshaw driver S. Periasamy welcomed the move. But the government should improve civic infrastructure first, he said.
P. Hari, another resident, said that the underground drainage work had not been completed in the town. Garbage was not being cleared regularly.
The municipality could not even supply water once a week. People may end up paying more taxes without deriving any benefits once the municipality became a namesake Corporation, he said.

Two students of Gandhigram Rural Institute, in Dindigul district’s Gandhigram village near here, have won the first prize with a cash award of Rs 40,000 at the National Student Research Convention held in Mumbai recently.
According to S. Karthigai Selvi, a Ph. D. student and M. Raj Kumar, an MCA student, their project, titled Radiological support system of brain abnormality detection from MRI Scans, was selected under the health science and allied sciences category.
The two say that the first 20 minutes is critical in a trauma care situation to save a patient. Their application could be used during such an emergency situation. When an MRI scan is done for head injuries, it could be made available through cloud computing and accessed through smart phones. The physician, using this application, can easily locate the injury and alert the supporting staff on the appropriate surgery plan, they explained.
