Well, this huge multi-residential project is well underway on the site of the previously known St Margarets Hospital. Situated in Surry Hills between Bourke & Crown Streets and a 3 min. stroll from Taylor Square.

4 main buildings, either being converted from existing hospital structures or newly built; to be known as alba, henry, jasper & ivy (yes, all lower case as in the "st" of st Margarets).

The flash web site @ www.stmargarets.com.au

The tallest being ivy @ 17 storeys above ground. To be seen in the background of the 1st pic and apparent in the 2nd.

LOL @ the fembots!

I really like this development, and the style it has chosen for both design and marketing! One of the main buildings is a refurbished building of the old hospital isn't it?

I read an article about this development about how it will revitalise the area and comments about the project in general were very positive.

I was actually born in St Margarets so I have a connection to the site. Is there anyone else out there who was born in this hospital.

Muse

I was born in The Bethesda Hospital in Enmore, which is now a nursing home.

Visited the site today and here is some feedback:

Completion of the whole "Maggies" project was initially expected to be around March, 2004. However, Grocon is ahead of schedule and it will be completed in stages from Sept. to Dec. next year at this stage.

2 cranes are currently on site. 1 being at the side of ivy (the tallest) and ivy's core is just up to street level.

The 2nd tallest structure is alba. It is being constructed in one of only two original hospital structures left. 8 floors above ground but around 3.2m height per floor. The other original structure was the hospital's chapel, now acting as the display suite and will eventually be converted for commercial use. It is cylindrical in shape.

The 3rd tallest will be jasper @ 11 floors above ground but lower floor to ceiling heights than alba (it's visible in the first 2 pics above). It's at "huge-whole-in-the-ground" stage.

The lowest yet longest structure will be henry @ 2 floors above ground. It will be terrace style accommodation. The long orange and white structure on the left in the 3rd pic.

There will be 4 levels of carpark under a large piece of the site.

st Margarets is already around 90% sold, the developers are planning more aprtment buildings for the area; particularly towards Flinders Street. They are just wating for the "DA,OK" for those plans.

Passed the site last Weds 7/05 and Ivy's construction is already up to level 11. Only 6 more levels to go until it tops out.

Ivy is such an irregular shaped structure.

There was an article in the Herald on Tuesday, I think it was, about the developer's plans for the site across Bourke Street, along Short Street through to Flinders Street, for St Margarets East. This will include several buildings, including an 18 storey tower near Flinders Street.
In South Sydney Council office foyer - middle building, enter off Elizabeth or Mary streets - there are several models of pending developments including the whole St Margarets West (under construction) and East (being negotiated). You might have to scramble about a bit as the display area, as always, is Very Amateur with models often stacked on top of each other! I guess display is a task for the office boy. Bloody pathetic.
BUT, the models are there!

Does anyone remember a few months when Noonos was not sure about the development "in east Sydney"?

I actually took a picture at Kirribilli last month and here's what IVY looked like from there. It is on the left of the image I have posted. This was part of a panorama that I had planned for you all but the images didn't quite connect to each other

The 17 storey Ivy has certainly topped-out.

Here is a model of the masterplan that includes stage 2 that the developers are hoping to get through. The tallest in the foreground is also 17 levels and as tall as Ivy (in the background).

The taller will/could front onto Short Street.

They go in the Kings Cross thread

and muse, getting the taller towers approved will be difficult due to concerns regarding it's height.

The main concern about getting St Margarets Part 2 approved are the community issues particularly one concerning the accommodation for the homeless that is part of the new site on Flinders Street.

There are a lot of negotiations happening and issues galore.

Dare I say I popped into a pub in Newtown for a quick midi of New and discovered a great local rag called Wentoworth Cuorier Central that was on the magaizine pick-up counter. It covers all of South Sydney's developments.

Anyway, in regard to St Margarets East, one of quotes:

"Last Wednesday night i.e. Weds. 3/11/03, South Sydney Council approved the latest masterplan of the St Margaret's East development" See model posted above.

Yesterday arvo @ 3.00PM I could see Ivy looking eastward-ho and I could see it on the horizon from Hay Street, Haymarket.

Unlike Fabian's last pic post, I certainly couldn't see cranes atop. To my knowledge, the cranes atop of Ivy of the St Margarets' redevelopment in Surry Hills have long gone.

However, I do have to go to Surry Hills today, so I will check just to make double sure, just for piece of mind, if anything :okay:

Plans dropped for East wing

By Line : None Published : 23/05/2004 Clip Ref : 11869961
Publication : Sun-Herald(Sydney) Section : Domain Page : 73

The slowdown in the property market has prompted the developers of St Margaret's in Surry Hills to scrap plans for a further residential block. The project faced further controversy and opposition in that the high-rise aspect of some of the new buildings would have been out of character for the suburb .

Muse

Oh okay. Sounds like the whole of the St Margaret's East proposal is being dropped. That's a shame. I would have liked to have seen a same height tower complementing Ivy. :(

Here are some photos of Ivy and the other St Margarets buildings today. The other buildings are Henry (wood and copper cladding), Alba (the original hospital building) and Jasper (black wall with white lines, red window things and angular balconies). The round building is the new location for Object Gallery - it was originally a chapel designed by Ken Woolley.

Peace out.

Nice pics papervagina.

Had a walk around the completed plaza areas today. Very similar to Forum in St Leos and Quandrant Off Broadway. Nice enclosed area with central water feature. No stores open as yet.

I find Jasper architecturally the most interesting. Nice to see Ivy with its green tiled panels up and down the southern facade too.

Alba still looks like the old hospital building! :D

Stunning! Jasper is amazing, and Ivy is one hell of a stunner too. I agree with mise that Alba still looks like the old hospital building. I think the brick should be rendered. I'll have to take a squiz when I'm next down there to see it with my own eyes.

Great photos, too.

I quite like the way all four buildings in the development are different. The back of Alba is less hospital-like (or perhaps more like a modern hospital!). Here's a few shots from the back of Alba.

Looking forward to more of you pics around Sydney's CBD and the developments happening around town.

"Word to your mothers" :? lol Perhaps cryptic, perhaps obvious. Did that mean any mums who gave birth in the converted hospital, now Alba?

I must check out the back of Alba next time I'm in the area.

...and isn't it great that the old Ken Woolley designed chapel has been kept and refurbed to become The Object Gallery!?! :okay:

Say, does anyone know how tall Alba actually is? I can't find it listed on Emporis, but I'm pretty sure it's be tall enough to be there - 9 floors (8 floors of apartments plus the ground floor) at 3.2m (according to one of Muse's posts from ages ago) and, as you can see in one of my photos above, the plant room looks to rise a good 3-4m above the 8th floor.
