The ancient theatre is one of the most well-known Bulgarian remains of Roman times. It is situated in the city center of Plovdiv. The Theater stands between the south-western slope of the Dzhambaz Tepe and the Taxim tepe hill within the old town, and is a major tourist attraction for travelers coming to the area .

It was built in the 2nd century AD under the orders of Trajan the Roman Emperor at this time, and is one of the many surviving Roman constructions in Bulgaria today.

Built with around 7,000 seats, each section of seating had the names of the city neighbourhoods engraved on the benches so the citizens at the time knew where they were to sit.

The theater was damaged in the 5th century AD by Atilla the Hun.

The theatre was excavated during works at the fortress walls. It took more than 10 years to remove the 15 meter thick mud that covered the theatre. It had been studied and restored between 1968 and 1984. Nowadays it is used for opera, theatre, concert and other city celebrations.

Those columns seems to be left at the wind mercy, and looks like it's not even safe to be close to them. I hate the way it's maintained and the surrounding buildings, but i'm sure that in future, with some serious investment will score 10/10, but for now, for me it's a 8/10.

It's a Theatre not an Amphitheatre

Nowadays the term 'amphitheatre' is used for both oval and theatre-style stages, like this one.
