JayT August 18th, 2004, 01:55 AM Just looking in the NZ forum and it appears there are no Christchurch pics. I did a thread on Christchurch a few years ago but its since vanished.
Does anyone have any pics of Christchurch?
It snowed there a few days ago - quite deep aparently.
Also it has a new art gallery/museum in the center of town which is quite interesting.

atkinson1 August 18th, 2004, 03:01 AM I've got a few pics from when I went to the south island in the last holidays (about 6 weeks ago). I took 320 pics in total, but only a fraction of those are pics of Christchurch. Might post some soon if I get time.

BruceAlmighty August 20th, 2004, 10:24 AM Great place besides everyone telling me how english it is.
Yes. They do tend to over do it sometimes with the ''more English than England'' thing. It would be nice if they changed the focus to more of a Kiwi-cosmopolitan with a touch of England.
atkinson1 August 20th, 2004, 11:16 AM That's their claim to fame.

Cee_em_bee August 27th, 2004, 12:36 PM Christchurch is a beautiful city, Very underated in my opinion.. Arguebly the best architecture in New Zealand.
timnz2000 September 3rd, 2004, 01:17 AM I love how the new building comes out of the old one in the last pic. I didnt get any good photos of it though.
That's Clarendon Tower, and their basic design guideline was to integrate well with the existing building, as to not impact the old architecture too much (Christchurch conservatives for you). And that's a really nice photo of the art gallery you took - postcard worthy definitely.
And many people in Christchurch hate the English thing, me included. I mean, I'm happy for it to go so far, but I think we've left that behind long ago. Makes us sound so mono-cultural, sedate, boring even.
Snowfall wasn't too bad, its passed now and it was actually quite warm yesterday.

SYDNEY February 10th, 2006, 11:45 AM Christchurch has gone International ;) feel free to contribute -
http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=316391
Nick February 10th, 2006, 12:30 PM What an awesome city.It looks like the perfect size to me.I really hope to go there sometime in the future.Ive done the North Island twice, once for pleasure in 1995 and I just got back from a 1 month study course a few weeks ago.But not the south.I really want to go after seeing these pictures.
I like the size of the city.It looks like Adelaide but with similar and different natural features like the glacier, the surf beaches and the moutain area near the sea.
Best of all.Its green and has kept alot of its heritage, unlike Auckland which is green but has alot of bad modern architecture mixed in with some nice architecture too,in its CBD.

rickster2k February 25th, 2006, 11:20 PM You been to C'church flying?
Love your first pic with the clouds and the mountains in the background. Really shows the city sprawl from the Port Hills (which is where i presume you took that photo from).
flyin_higher February 26th, 2006, 03:54 AM Yea, just got back last week.
I've got heaps of pics, but i'll upload them later, cause it takes ages on dial-up, lol. (I know, I can't afford broadband).
atkinson1 February 26th, 2006, 09:29 AM Great pics flyin. The night shots look good.
Davee February 26th, 2006, 02:03 PM Can't wait to see the rest of your pictures flyin. Hope you had a great time. You need to fill us in on what developments you have seen going up. Love the moon picture over the gallery. The two skyline shots are great, not quiet AKL or WLG, but heaps of potential there. It also gives an indication at how spread out and sprawling Chch is beginning to become. Did you take those picture from out Westmoreland way?? :)
flyin_higher February 27th, 2006, 05:24 AM And yet despite its sprawl, Christchurch still remains very easy to bike around!
Davee March 28th, 2006, 05:11 PM Christchurch Cathedral is the seat of the Bishop of Christchurch and it is the heart of the city. It is the dominating influence in the heart of the city. The foundation stone was laid on Canterbury Anniversary Day, 16th December 1864, 14 years after the arrival of the first organised settlers and the nave was consecrated on the 1st November (All Saints) 1904.

Christchurch is a city that is built around its cathedral. Its spire once use to dominate the skyline, but not anymore. What it is though, is a proud symbol of the 'city that shines'. It is the best known and most visited church building in New Zealand. It is open every day of the year.

Neitzsche April 11th, 2006, 11:00 PM Christchurch is looking stunning. Some magic shots there. I'm heading down in August for the first time in about ten years. Very much looking forward to it.
Davee April 23rd, 2006, 04:50 PM Just found this view of CHC while trawling around the web. In front you can see the new devloping suburb of Northwood which is joined on to Belfast. To the side you can see part of the Clearwater Resort Golf Course. The city centre is in the top right hand corner, and the eastern suburbs strech out to the sea. The large green patch behind the wing is green belt land thats fate is being decided. Plans for new housing, arterial roads, life style blocks and sporting facilities are all being mooted. In typical CHC fashion, it is taking time. The Port Hill and Banks Penisular are in the background - :)
PS - this photo was about 2000, so there has been much more significant deveopment all around Belfast, Northwood and Clearwater.

Davee April 25th, 2006, 06:41 PM Isn't the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament just magnificent?! I love it. The whole area around it soooooo needs to be developed. There have been some really good ideas mooted - but will they ever get of the ground?
Thanks for those Tony. Keep them coming....... :)
Davee April 26th, 2006, 12:51 AM Found this. Roughly looking west/northwest. Nice day looking out over Victoria Square. The Crown Plaza Hotel on the left and the Town Hall in the centre. The white buildings in the distance behind the Town Hall are the old Christchurch Womens Hospital (which has just moved to a brand new build). Whats going to happen on that land when they pull it down is anyones guess!! Hopefully something fab.

TonyNZ April 26th, 2006, 08:18 AM Yes the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament is a wonderful piece of roman catholic architecture, probably my favourite historic building in Christchurch. David do u know where it actually is in Christchurch? Cos i didn't see it whilst i was there last in January.
Kiss the Rain April 26th, 2006, 12:13 PM Its actually not very close to the square, its on barbaedols( not sure if i got the spelling right) street, opposite the CPIT.
Davee April 26th, 2006, 01:16 PM Yes the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament is a wonderful piece of roman catholic architecture, probably my favourite historic building in Christchurch. David do u know where it actually is in Christchurch? Cos i didn't see it whilst i was there last in January.
Certainly do Tony.............
It's on Barbados Street at the Moorehouse Ave end. Christchurch Polytec is opposite, the Christchurch School of Music is on the left of it (if you were standing in front of the cathedral and looking at it) and Cathedral College is to the right (the old Francis Xavier and Sacred Heart Colleges combined).
Like you it is my favourite historic building in CHC - but its far from just being historic. Just like it's Anglican sister, the Roman cathedral is humming with full liturgical activity, fantastic music - full sung masses with and with out organ and orchestra - they even do a mid week Latin Mass - brilliant.
The CBS has just celebrated it's 100 years. I posted a tread on one of the internation threads (your favorite building or something like that). I'll do it again for this thread - I just lifted the brilliant photos straight from the CBS website.
The reason the Roman cathedral is where it is was simply to do with the clash of catholic practice and thought between the Anglican and Roman traditions within the Church - crazy. Because CHC and Canterbury was a Anglican invention, they got the good spot. The Romans had to be content with being given land by the smelly gas works and work yards. The response - Francis Petrie's (Lord Concrete) - stunning cathedral.
When George B Shaw congratulated the city fathers on the magnificent cathedral, they all thought he was talking about Christ Church Cathedral in the square - but he he replied 'no the one by the gas works!'
Whatever - CHC is lucky to have two beautiful different looking cathedrals.
CBS is sitting in the middle of huge development potential. There are a couple of articles about it in the Greater Christchurch thread.
:)
Davee April 28th, 2006, 12:42 AM Sorry guys about the image size. I have just figured out how to send scanned pictures from my PC to photobucket to post here. Although I have been able to reduce the picture size in my host album, it has not automatically done it when when I posted onto the thread - I'm going to have to work that one out :?
Anyway - I have been trawling through some old photos, and have found some corkers (well I think they're ok).
Christchurch's Icon - Christ Church Cathedral. This was taken on a beautiful Autum May Day in 2002 from the Farmers carpark building smack in between Oxford Tce, Gloucester St, Colombo St and Armagh St looking south. You can just see the Port Hills imbetween the spire and BNZ building.
The Cathedral was begun in 1864 and the nave was consecrated in 1881. The transepts and chancel were not completed until 1904. The great George Gillbert Scott was the architect, with additions by Benjamin W Mountfort. It's Christchurh's most important landmark and the symbol of the city. The new visitors centre is next to and joined onto the cathedral - you can see it on the left of the picture. It was designed by Alun wilkie of Wilkie and Bruce Architects and opened in 1995. You can see the War Memorial in front of the visitor centre.
The grey building on the right of the picture is the Bank of New Zealand Building. It is bounded by Hereford St, Colombo St and Cathedral Sq. It was built in 1967 (not looking to bad for its age). It was designed by Stephenson and Turner of Sydney and was of CHC first real highrises as 43 metres (141 feet). The building is covered with precast panels faced with dark grey-green slate from Broughton Moor quarries in England. In 1987 it got a $20million facelift overseen by Athfield Architects of Wellington. The top two floors are penthouse apartments - the rest BNZ banking.
The Millennium Hotel (the white building) use to be the Housing Corporation building. It was designed by Manson, Seward, Stanton and Meikle Architects. It is 11 stories tall - 42 metres (140 feet) and has had a penthouse and caretakers flat built on top of it in addition. In 1994 it was converted into the 4 star Millennium Hotel which has 179 rooms and opened in 1995.
http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g226/DavidEugene/ccc001001.jpg
The faun coloured building to the left of the picture was the Christchurch Transport Board Building until it was transformed into the 4 star Heritage Hotel in the mid 1990's. It was designed by Minson, Henning-Hansen and Dines Architects and opened in 1973. Interestingly the building was called Carruca House until 1995 (a carruca was a roman vehicle designed to carry passengers - CAR). It's 12 stories tall, not very attractive (well it's nice inside), it at least gives CHC some hight! :)
I got my information from a neat little book called Round the Square - A History of Christchurch's Cathedral Square. Great read!
Round The Square - A History of Christchurch's Cathedral Square (1995) Clerestory Press. Christchurch.

Kiss the Rain April 28th, 2006, 12:08 PM Came this pic somewhere today and just occurred to me suddenly how very similar it look to christchurch, i think this is as close as a city from other country to look like christchurch- the size and height of the skyline, the port hills and even the riccarton road seems to be there lol.
Anyone can guess where is actually is?

Marky Mark April 29th, 2006, 03:08 PM ???? :)
dubious April 30th, 2006, 12:00 AM I'm guessing Phoenix, Arizona.
NZGSR April 30th, 2006, 03:59 AM Could be an old phoinex maybe but im pretty sure their skyline is in two parts uptown and a downtown.
Heres a few more to throw at the list- Tuscon or Salt lake City???? please be right lol
dubious April 30th, 2006, 05:57 AM I change my guess to Tucson :)
Kiss the Rain April 30th, 2006, 08:33 AM Come on guys, how could it be phoneix or tucson if the mountains are so green, and this is not just an uptown or midtown or whatever, its the whole of the skyline.
Kiss the Rain April 30th, 2006, 08:35 AM Think ill add some more clue, although its skyline is small, but the metro population is A LOT bigger than chch.
dubious April 30th, 2006, 09:54 AM This is getting frustrating :bash:
Last guess- Colorado Springs or Reno NV.

Marky Mark May 31st, 2006, 12:12 PM Christchurch wold look Fab with a couple of 100m Towers !
Davee May 31st, 2006, 12:41 PM Soooooo true Marky. But when is that going to happen? Anyones guess. Christchurch is growing, the census has just shown that. If the mayors plan for major central city revitalistaion (hence the Greater Christchurch Thread) is truely realised, hopefully it should not be to long before big developers will announce more highrise developments.
NZGSR May 31st, 2006, 11:51 PM I can remember when I was a little kid going on a school trip to the City Council building and we met the Mayor Vicki Buck at the time and she had a model of jade Stadium on her desk and it was what it looks like now excect the old eastern stands were not there and a clone of the western stand was there insted. So my guess is we will see the new stand up before the world cup 2011!!!!
Kiss the Rain June 1st, 2006, 10:36 AM Hey do you guys know anything about the new crane on hereford street? Found it today and they are still just doing the foundations.

timnz2000 July 11th, 2006, 10:40 AM Nice effort with the malls!
Just got back from a week and half in Christchurch but people on here have everything covered it looked like! The City Mall Revitalisation Project is in the consultation stages. One of the shops in the mall has taken in the role as a display centre where you can view plans and issues and submit feedback on what you want to happen. Let's face it, the only way to get people back into the central city is to get them to live there, so hopefully some more apartment developments will surface in the next while!
Those are totally cool pics Tony, pretty much did a mission round all the same places when I was there. Did u leave Chch when you were really young and was this one of ur first times back?

Nice shots Chris. For a city with an greater urban population close to half a million, Chch has it's fair share of Malls. The sad thing is, these Malls have contributed to the dramatic decline in the development of the city centre - I only hope that the revitalisation plan set out is going to work and make the central city the place people want to go for the day. My mum says that Northlands is so big she dosen't need to go into the city, and Riccarton is even bigger.

Cartel July 14th, 2006, 03:32 PM The thing I like most about Christchurch is the view from the hills, more so just before sunset on a good day the city gets caught in a ray of light and the whole city lights up. Though much better viewed from Cashmere, this photo taken up Mt Pleasent kind of shows what I mean, enjoy

well therez well over 100 left, can't post them all ot once, it's taking ages :bash:
NZGSR September 13th, 2006, 03:56 AM Shit wheres those dense apartments in sydneham located? looks like its goin to get really packed around the inner suburbs!
Cartel September 13th, 2006, 04:10 AM yeah they're just in a side street on lombo south of Broughman, ur right the inner suburbs are getting denser, St Albans, Merivale, Richmond, Riccarton, Fendalton, all over people are dozing their villas for townhouses like these. It's about time, the built up area covers an area that would reflect a city of 1 - 2 million people( depending on what ur comparing to) but our skyline doesn't even reflect a city of half our population, it's rediculous. Do you think one day it will?
Cartel September 13th, 2006, 04:13 AM but then there's pagasus, northwood, halswell etc, I think chc could be doomed to become a southern californian sprawl.
NZGSR September 13th, 2006, 04:26 AM Yea South Cali is right I think thats where we are heading and heading fast to with the council opening up land in Yaldhurst also and have you checked Prebalton out that place is like 10 times as big as it use to housing going up everywhere. Theres alot of people moving there these days and we who live or have lived there no why:)

Thanks to for showing the real CHC as well , the south, graffiti, knarlly old streets, shitty buses, the homeless -It shows how grown up CHC has become. It's important we see the gritty as well as all the good that is going on and being planned. I'm taking a breather for a minute before commenting on your photos - guys those pictures are only the start of what development is to come in CHC.

You're so right David. Have you noticed how peacefull it is around that part of the river, it's just so laxed. Can't beat it on a nice day. You really don't need heaps of skyscrapers to be a big or beautiful city. Chc proves that.
Still, I would love to see an admirable skyline one day, just for something to look at really:)
SYDNEY September 14th, 2006, 03:43 AM My word - I had no idea that the parks are that GORGEOUS ! I want to hop on the next plane out of the rat race, grab a flat-white,a good porn mag ;) and just chill in those beautiful parks .. you are all very lucky !

hey - 500 post for you next - well done
cartel' January 20th, 2007, 02:49 PM I'd like to show a view of Christchurch that a select few have had the oppurtunity to experience. Foriegners many not think to much of it, but being born here, it's beautiful to me. So they are taken from the 17th floor penthouse of Clarendon tower, mostly from the western side which was vacant - hence the nature of my trip. The timing was not right but one day I would like to lease this place, only if I could get the whole floor:cheers: bahaha. No photos from the north side:ohno:

spotila January 20th, 2007, 10:53 PM awesome dude, really good. Always wondered what CHCH looked like from inside the CBD ;)
flyin_higher January 20th, 2007, 11:36 PM Wow great shots cartel, good to see a new perspective of the city.
nzman January 21st, 2007, 03:38 AM Those are some good pics, but Christchurch needs to be developed more.
TonyNZ January 21st, 2007, 03:51 AM ^^ No shit! lol its terrible... god i cant wait for the south part of the city to get some nice highrise architecture. By the way who else hates that carpark building in Cartels 1st pic to the left?? Thanks for posting these cartel how long ago did u take them??
cartel' January 21st, 2007, 04:14 AM ^^ yes it really is quite sad how underdeveloped the central city is, and how many people who are against develpoment in any way shape or for live here. Office buildings are popping up all over the western industrial suburbs, further adding to the citys decline. I'm confidentit shall change thou. Those pics were taken early september last year.
yes that carpark building is shocking, it was to be demosilhed to make way for the new council building, but I read they now changed their plans...
aucklandman January 21st, 2007, 04:26 AM Yea good shots, I have to say that CHCH is looking good, AND your skyline looks quite American.
Who and why are people opposing high rise dev.?
flyin_higher January 21st, 2007, 06:21 AM ^^From what I hear its mostly the 'old elite' and random nimbys who want Chch to remain a quaint low rise town. Which is all very well for the suburbs, but not very relevant for central city areas as we know.
cartel' January 21st, 2007, 12:58 PM Yea good shots, I have to say that CHCH is looking good, AND your skyline looks quite American.
Who and why are people opposing high rise dev.?
I don't exactly know who and I sure as hell don't understand why. Like Flyin said it definetly lies in the 40-60 age group. It's just that everytime there is a newspaper article announcing a proposed highrise, we are guarenteed at least another dozen about people opposing the development. This is why fuck all gets built here - negative assholes who like to complain about anything and everything always have an audience. I know the majority of people here are all for development, I just don't understand why their view is never expressed nor aknowledged, prehaps people are more than happy to speak out against something yet not for. I don't know it's beyond me..:ohno:
The Big C January 22nd, 2007, 11:20 PM Its true, the lack of support for city high rise development has led to kids brought up in our myriad malls who love nothing more than doing the 'Lumbo run down Colombo St. on weekend nights in their revolting boy racer cars, then the 40-60's complain about that :ohno: if we had a more pleasant and exciting central city atmoshpere those people would actually stop complaining and enjoy spending their time there :bash:
flyin_higher January 22nd, 2007, 11:43 PM ^^Yea thats pretty on the mark there.
Davee January 24th, 2007, 02:13 AM Hey - I'm finally getting my photos sorted. This is just the start. The family went to Mass on Christmas morning, so I was snapping away. This is just the Cathedral inside and out. It was a warm morning, despite the cloudy day. The Cathedral was packed, the music EXCELLENT - lunch afterwards BRILLIANT. Will post part two of CHC Christmas Day 2006 wander tomorrow.

Davee January 26th, 2007, 12:18 AM Excellent, funky urban design or is that official urban art!
Have no idea - but whatever it is, CHC could do with a lot more of it :)
Kane007 January 26th, 2007, 12:32 AM Lol. All of NZ's cities could do with a lot more.

you will find that from now on I'll be posting my photos on the international thread also which Tony started, please feel free to contribute to that one, I think it would be better if our city was getting across to a much larger audience.
TonyNZ January 28th, 2007, 05:55 AM Great photos Cartel! Please dont take offense to this but some of your photos are depressing - South Christchurch is a mess nothing but old shitty warehouses, grafitti, 70's style crap arse buildings, hobos and weird people. The rest of your photos are brilliant! :)

Nice pics however
flyin_higher January 28th, 2007, 09:32 AM Lovely photos cartel. Nice to see all sides of the urban condition in Christchurch, not just the pretty sides.

Nice pics however
Ben - your really good with the camera, fab photos of NZ's greatest city - but it is getting a little dull seeing Skytower etc all the time - could we see some of the shitty side of AKL?
Davee January 28th, 2007, 11:19 AM Thanks Cartel, love the black and white pictures.
Tony has made a fair observation - but I think it is sooooooo important that you see the real side of the envirionment you live in, or you can become so clouded as to believe those areas don't exist. I think NZers are good as doing that. What is wonderful about showing the rough, undeveloped side of South CHC is the potential that is there. Think of all the things that are happening to brighten the place up - the future is looking good - hence that wonder Phase 2 document issued by the Council about Revitalisation.
It is a sad fact though - all cities will have a dark and depressing side - these must be shared. That is why I have as Ben (or any of the AKL guys) to show us the real side of AKL as well - hey and Wellington. :)

Hey - Be careful out there ;)
Cartel January 28th, 2007, 01:58 PM Yeah I get your point Tony, those were some pics I have from a while back, really I don't understand what you guys are on about thou, to start with I've never seen any hobos in south christchurch, this is just a part of the industrial area of sydneham, which I guess is as bleak as any other industrail area in the world. Also it's hardly the shittiest part of chc, when was the last time you were in aranui or richmond? And I have lived in south christchurch (when in nz) for a few years now, and would never even think about living anywhere else! It really is the most beautiful part of this city without a doubt, which you would also know if you lived there too. Think Cashmere, Somerfield, Beckenham, the heathcote river, the parks and reserves, tree lined streets, the beautiful girls, the real south is money. Surely you're refering to south central (sydneham). Which IS being developed as we speak. to end. It is what it is!
Davee January 29th, 2007, 09:30 AM I think the plaques in these photos explain all.......................

Yeh - I love it - it was a special thing for the City of NY to give such symbolic steel to CHC. It's a really peaceful spot. My inlaws were very impressed with it and the location - it's just something you don't expect to come across.
Kane007 January 29th, 2007, 09:51 PM Lovely words from Gary Moore. A truly beautiful tribute.
Davee January 29th, 2007, 10:10 PM ^^
I agree. If any of you are in town, try and get to see it. It's only a 5 or 6minute walk from the Square.
SYDNEY January 29th, 2007, 10:41 PM Cross fingers that I get to CHC this year - a little birdy has told me that I might be going to Queenstown for my very own winter wedding ;) stay tuned for an update.

If you are any good at inline skating - roller blading - then you'll pick it up no problems and thus wont look too silly!:)
My last trip to Queenstown, I'd never been on ski's either, but my roller hockey experience served me a charm! I do believe a lot of skiers do inline skating in the warmer months to keep the skill levels up.
