Sudan’s Dal Group opened a dairy factory with daily production capacity of 500,000 liters (132,085 gallons), the largest in the African country.

The plant, which cost “tens of millions of dollars,” opened yesterday, Dal Dairy Factory Co. Marketing Manager Duncan Elliott said in a phone interview today from the capital city of Khartoum. It will make milk, yogurt, whipping cream and a salty cheese called mish under the Capo brand, he said.

The company aims to introduce the “first mass-produced pasteurized milk at a price point affordable by the average Sudanese” with the new factory, Elliott said.

Initial production will be close to the former plant’s capacity of 50,000 liters, according to Elliott. “We’ll be looking to grow rapidly” to full capacity within two to three years, he said.
