oscarinho December 14th, 2010, 02:29 AM Ther is Kaohsiung Port and Cruise Service Center! The same feeling as the Taipei pop music center, Reiser Umemoto touch!!

williamchung7 December 14th, 2010, 04:32 AM I think they use chimney as the image for their design. You can see the shape of the project looks like chimney on the crusine vessel. However, it looks similar as Taipei pop music centre, it works from this idea. Use pedestal as service centre (maybe shopping centre) and put an iconic shaped massing item on it. It works for me.
Sorry for poor english.
oscarinho December 14th, 2010, 06:49 AM Yes I like this kind of chimney too. Big windows, with a view to the boat are pretty good too. The building is easily identifiable. With the pop music center and the port and cruise center, these can be a new Reiser-Umemoto Taiwanese style.
kalifese December 14th, 2010, 07:31 AM it looks somewhat alien-like. i do like the wavy forms. fits the theme of a structure for a marine environment. i wish the complex was bigger tho. that dock area still looks too empty. they need to fill it with some kind of hotel and office complex consisting of several towers and a convention center. it's a prime space.
hatsune December 14th, 2010, 07:32 AM Wow that thing's designed like an airport... last time I checked the cruise center in LA is just a piece of concrete going into the harbor.
pierre-laurent December 14th, 2010, 07:50 AM oh non! disappointed...i prefer another project (kalifese may know what i'm talking about..). but this one is not the worst.
kalifese December 14th, 2010, 09:06 AM ya this one isnt my favorite either. but it could've been worse! i like their taipei pop music center better.
kalifese December 20th, 2010, 12:35 PM this was second place by asymptote and kris yao. i like this one much better. looks like tron:legacy which i saw this weekend in imax 3d and it was awesome!! everyone should see that movie!!

This would be a breathtaking view.
Huhu December 22nd, 2010, 09:13 AM I prefer the 2nd place design too. The winner looks like a vacuum cleaner from certain angles.
ilovetw December 22nd, 2010, 05:45 PM I like the second design too. The more I see the first design the less I like it. I don't know why. It's just looks like a oddly shaped metal sculpture that should be on a lesser scale rather than a building.
kalifese December 23rd, 2010, 12:27 AM I like the second design too. The more I see the first design the less I like it. I don't know why. It's just looks like a oddly shaped metal sculpture that should be on a lesser scale rather than a building.
same with me! i read the inspiration is supposed to be bent metal square rods or something but why would that be a good inspiration? when you bend square metal rods you get dents, distortions and buckling like you see in that rendering. it looks imperfect and extremely unattractive! i feel like i want to take a hammer and hammer those distortions and buckling out.
their taipei pop music center looks better because the building isnt as twisted and distorted.
wannabeplanner December 24th, 2010, 03:26 PM I like the 2nd design better as well.. but I will take the winning design! Pretty radical for Taiwan. Just came back from Kaohsiung and I have to say its not the nicest city in Asia by any means... I haven't been there in 25 years and I have heard many people said its much better than before, but honestly I think it still has huge room for improvement..
Taiwan is proposing some pretty modern infrastructure projects, I just hope the private sector steps up and come up with more modern designs... Go Taiwan go!!!
ed21x December 26th, 2010, 01:36 AM i definitely prefer kris yao's design as well, however, the tender did state that they want a distinct national landmark which people will associate when they think of kaohsiung, and for that purpose, the first design makes more sense. Yao's design resembles designs i've seen in barcelona, san diego, and cape town, while this weird chimney will be recognizeable to everyone.
kalifese December 27th, 2010, 02:53 AM i live in san diego. what buildings here do you think resembles kris yao's design cuz i dont see any?
kalifese January 5th, 2011, 08:51 AM more renderings from the kaohsiung port competition website. the design reminds me of bilbao guggenheim too because of the abstractness.

THIS SHOULD BE THE WINNING DESIGN!!!!!!! NOT A PILE OF TWISTED DISTORTED SQUARE METAL TUBING!!!! WHO THE F#@$ PICKS THESE WINNERS IN THESE TAIWANESE COMPETITIONS???? :bleep:
ed21x April 2nd, 2011, 02:43 AM Kris Yao's design doesn't seem to have much floor space compared to the others. Maybe this is a deciding factor, as the first place design will at least have an impact on the waterfront skyline.

well they could've just made it bigger when they start creating plans to build it!!
kalifese April 2nd, 2011, 03:51 AM i read that the port design was an offshoot of one of asympote's other work, the yas hotel in abu dabi. it's frickin beautiful and so innovative and different!!! luv the lighting design!! you could've had something like this, taiwan!!!! :ohno:

kalifese October 28th, 2011, 08:47 PM renderings from arups website:
http://www.arup.com/Projects/Kaohsiung_Port_Terminal/Details.aspx#!
The development is part of the plan formulated by the Kaohsiung Harbour Bureau and the Ministry of Transportation and Communications of Taiwan to create a quality environment to serve passengers, visitors and the community.
Under this plan, cruise and passenger ferry service facilities and the surrounding environment will be improved; visitors will be provided with more convenient and comfortable facilities; and the offices of various port administrative agencies will be integrated into one area to enhance service quality. The plan will also help promote international exchange and boost both international and domestic tourism.
A dynamic icon
The centre's design disregards the conventional linear form of ports, and aims to create a dynamic icon for Kaohsiung. The development not only provides first class cruise terminal services to passengers, but also comprises offices, conference venues, restaurants, exhibition halls, retail areas and open space for leisure.
The design was selected by a panel of six international jurists for its well designed open and secured spaces, good circulation strategy, impressive visual appearance from the ocean and sophisticated interaction between the local culture and site characteristics.
A sustainable model
Following the modern day expectations of sustainable design and responsible transport, Arup and the design team developed a set of sustainable design solutions integral with the centre's design.
The proposals include passive energy saving technology including a façade that reduces solar heat gain and is streamlined to encourage natural ventilation with BMS control openings.
Active energy saving technology includes a seawater cooling system that takes advantage of the waterfront location; ice-storage system, photovoltaic systems to generate lighting and small power. When completed in 2014, the Port Terminal and Cruise Service Center will become a visually striking landmark for the city of Kaohsing and act as a catalyst for sustainable development in the region.

Awesome.e October 29th, 2011, 05:17 PM futuristic I like
kalifese October 29th, 2011, 08:21 PM I'm not sure about this crumpled metal concept. I prefer the one by asymptote. But anything would be better than a conventional glass or concrete box structure.
