Strange title...maybe - but even Somalia has works of its own coming up and continuing, they're minuscule but noteworthy in the situation. This topic is for any and all projects taking place in Somalia and within its regional departments.

The format will be "Establishment - TOWN - Status."

EEAC - Burao, Somaliland - render of Burao plant

An expat who returned is building that impressive plant. The Malaysians also have a stake in this venture and are eagerly awaiting the export of processed Somali meat to their country(now their market is 90% Indian dominated) -Info (www.simadsom.org/documents/sbr/April%20-%20June%202010.pdf). This project in Somaliland will significantly boost the Somali presence in the multi-million/billion dollar Halal meat industry, better to get in there now before the Brunei Sultanate does.

I wasn't sure how serious the Tawakal project in Bosaso would be so I traced the logo on the building and sure enough it is Tawakal's actual logo, it looks like this one is going to be the real deal. Tawakal has some nice projects going in Dubai so they're legit. I just hope the rest of Bosaso shapes up as the render shows.

WHITE SAND VILLAGE - Hargeisa, Somaliland - Under Construction/Nearly complete

http://oi55.tinypic.com/2pocrgx.jpg

White Sand Development is a major
new development in the outskirt
of city of Hargeisa along the way
to the port town of Berbera. The idea is to
build modern and exclusive homes in a new
estate at affordable prices.

With more than one hundred homes, the
estate will be well provided with quality
infrastructures such as piped water, central
electricity supply, sewerage system, wide
paved circulation road, adequate storm
water drainage system and external road
lighting. Within the neighbourhood there
will be children playground facilities,
landscaped open spaces and high quality
shops and amenities for the convenience of
residents with a security system with only
one gated entrance from the main highway,
managed by a dedicated team of people.

White Sand Development, the first
development of its kind is a joint venture
between Somaliland, Malaysia and British
companies.

The main benefits are that potential
purchasers are not just buying beautifully
designed comfortable homes at affordable
prices, but are also buying a lifestyle and a
great neighbourhood that can match the
quality of those in developed nation while at
the same time maintaining the hospitable
relationship befitting the soft and friendly
nature of the Somaliland people.

The project is at an early stage and any
potential buyer can contact Mr Abdirisak M.
Mahmuud for further information. - Link (http://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&q=cache:PLPT_IQ7ewwJ:somalieye.co.uk/somalieye-magazine/doc_view/18-1somali-eye-issue-1%3Ftmpl%3Dcomponent%26format%3Draw+whitesand+development+hargeisa&hl=en&gl=uk&pid=bl&srcid=ADGEEShOHet5F1KvCXSaTHXpVFWXkp-cs6zHwyNSWjnINTguBOMlltZSXXWSUk2mO-c468GnaF9Jz0lYOnKv4-fsX9eA4L5y8lF3egF6shhVkk0a0xqL4zsiNqBoXn2oGNwxNDOd0TgA&sig=AHIEtbQPZ-eF6GCftgniIN7NZ0ELy9dpOw)

OlympAfrica centre in Somalia to be completed by March 2011

APA-Garowe (Somalia) The construction of OlympAfrica centre in Somalia is due to be completed by the end of March next year, first vice president and head of international relations of Somali Olympic committee Duran Ahmed Farah and NOC executive office manager Mohamed Abdo Hajji said on Friday in Garowe, capital of semi-autonomous state Puntland (north-west), at 785km of Mogadishu the Somali capital.

Speaking during a joint press conference while visiting the construction site on Friday morning, Mohamed Abdo Hajji and Duran Ahmed Farah the construction is part of OlympAfrica program which is intended to help African countries develop sporting facilities.

Somalia is one of the last countries in Africa to join the program.

The centre which is the first of its kind ever built in Somalia is being constructed in Garowe where the Somali regional soccer tournament is currently also taking place.

This centre consists includes football facility, multi-purpose field, boarding and education centre where orphans and those from poorer families will study,” Duran Farah said.

“...the first phase of the construction has now successfully ended and the second phase is expected to commence next week," he said.

‘We are very proud of what we are doing here, because it is the first time in history that Somali NOC implements such centre in the country with the assistance from Olympic solidarity, ANOCA, IAAF and Daimler," Duran told journalists.

He also praised the semi-autonomous state of Puntland for contributing a large land to construct the centre.

“Large number of youths whose parents cannot afford to pay for their education fee will also take advantage from this opportunity” the Somali NOC vice president added.

The implementation of this centre is reported to be part of consecutive steps that Somali NOC takes to spread sporting activities in all Somali regions.

“We are calling on international community specially those interested in sport to help Somali NOC achieve its ambition which is to revive the country’s sporting ability which has died down during two decades of civil strife and lack of stability.

We are working in a country where even life is impossible let alone sport” Farah emphasized.

Somali Olympic committee executive office manager Mohamed Abdo Hajji, who accompanied the vice president, for his part told reporters that NOC is drawing a new initiative which is aimed at developing sport in all Somali regions.

“The construction of this Olymp Africa centre in Somalia is one of the biggest achievements of Somali NOC and we are very grateful to all those who helped us accomplish this major job” the NOC executive office manager said. - Source (http://www.afriqueavenir.org/en/2010/12/24/olympafrica-centre-in-somalia-to-be-completed-by-march-2011/)

Graduation stories: Osman Nur designs unique mosque to honor his father.

http://www.news.ku.edu/2010/may/7/images/nur.jpg

LAWRENCE — To get to know the Somali father he left when he was just a child, Osman Nur needed the ‘excuse’ of his University of Kansas McNair Scholars Program research project.

Nur, his mother Madina Sheikh, three older brothers and an older sister fled their native Mogadishu, Somalia, in 1991 at the start of the Somali Civil War. His father Aabow Mo’alin Nur, a teacher, religious leader, community organizer and self-taught architect, stayed.

“He’s the reason I’m in school,” Nur said. “I really didn’t like school that much. Growing up, I didn’t go to school. Everything I’ve accomplished in school is because of him. We’d talk on the phone only about once a month because it was so expensive. Before he even asked how I was, he’d ask about my education and how I was doing, which kept pushing me to do better, demanding I take school seriously. He didn’t allow me to ask questions about him. He never liked people writing about him.”

Of leaving Somalia, Nur said, “Survival was the main thing, living from hour to hour, just getting away from the war. We were just happy to be alive.” Family members migrated to Kenya, where they stayed until 1998. They received political asylum and were able to come to the United States in 1999 through the sponsorship of an older sister, Hamsa Mohamed, a primary care physician in Saginaw, Mich.

“The only thing we knew about America was from Hollywood movies,” Nur said. No one in the family spoke English. They first went to a large Somali community in Rochester, Minn., then moved to Overland Park in summer 2002. Nur graduated from Shawnee Mission North High School in spring 2003, then began attending KU in fall 2003. His
mother has since moved back to Rochester.

Then came the project award. KU’s McNair Scholars Program is federally funded and helps prepare first-generation, low-income students from underrepresented ethnic groups for future careers as faculty members and researchers.

Nur’s father designed more than two dozen of the 37 mosques he managed in Somalia. Nur went to Somalia to do research, mentored by Marie-Alice L’Heureux, associate professor of architecture. His main goal, though, was to interview his father for what became his McNair project essay, “The Transformation of Islamic Architecture: The Work of the Somali Sufi Mosque Designer, Mo’alin Nur, ‘Aabow’ ”

Describing his father’s initial reaction, Nur said, “When I told him, he said, ‘You’re telling me you’ve gone to America to learn about Nur, that your school in America is going to teach you about me?’ He always referred to himself as ‘Nur’ with any of the titles he was given. He only answered the questions because I told him it was required for my assignment, for my education.”

In his essay, Nur wrote, “The gentleman I call father kept his past a secret although he always tried to give me a better life than the one he had.”

Nur saw his father twice in the past 11 years before the elder Nur’s death in October 2009. Traveling to Somalia for his father’s funeral, Nur took a sketchbook and began to think of ways to honor his father by drawing designs for a mosque, the principal religious and communal building associated with Islam.

“He’s how I got into architecture, to study something he knows. I knew I had to do something for him,” Nur said, thinking that every time people came to the mosque they would pay respect to his father. Nur said his family in both the United States and Somalia, told him, “Only you can design it.”

The design and building of the mosque became an additional part of Nur’s architectural academic program. He was guided by L’Heureux and Steve Padgett, associate professor of architecture.

In the design, Nur introduced some design details not seen before in mosques built there. Instead of semicircular doorway arches, Nur’s are stepped arches based on golden ratio proportions used in the five domes of the mosque. The mosque’s minaret, Nur said, is the tallest around at more than 100 feet. Roofs had always been flat concrete slabs. His design uses waffle-slab construction.

“It was scary, something they’d never seen. People in the community had lots of experience building things and probably thought, ‘Why should we listen to this kid who’s never built anything.’ The reason they did was because I was the son of their respected religious leader. I know about the culture, that you don’t argue with the elders or even tell them what to do or how to do it.

“How many KU students could dream of building something like this when they’re in school? What’s the point of an education if you can’t share it?”

“Osman has applied the skills he learned to real life,” said Allyson Flaster, academic services coordinator of the McNair Scholars Program. “He created a mosque and mausoleum to honor his father. His father’s community embraced the design that’s currently being built. He is also creating a design and master plan for a high school in Abudwaq in central Somalia that has been without a formal high school for a decade as a result of the civil war.”

Nur said he credits KU with helping him learn critical thinking skills, encouraging him to question rather than following only rigid or traditional rules. In 2008, he earned an Undergraduate Research Award from the University Honors Program to study the aboriginal and modern architecture of Australia and a prestigious Gilman International Scholarship to study at the University of New South Wales with Pritzker Prize-winning architect Glenn Mercutt.

“In Australia and Asia, I was able to see how different other people live, that there are different ways to do things, that my way is not the only way.”

Chosen for the Multicultural Architectural Scholars Program, Nur said he values tutelage from its co-directors Bill Carswell and Hobart Jackson, associate professors of architecture, plus support from Patti Baker, assistant to John Gaunt, dean of the School of Architecture, Design and Planning. Carswell also was a mentor for Nur’s undergraduate research in University Honors Program.

Nur said he plans to eventually do graduate work in vernacular or indigenous architecture. His family wants him to pursue a doctorate. He’d also like to work with a cultural or tourist architectural firm, involving community buildings that are regional and unique to each “so they feel it is theirs.”

“Osman is a remarkable man with a truly compelling life story,” said Keith Diaz-Moore, associate professor and chair of architecture. “He is an insightful student who engages in architecture with pure enthusiasm and delight. The fact that he’s already engaging in such meaningful work reflects the great promise he holds as a future professional.

For his superior achievements — and his father’s legacy — Nur will carry the banner for the School of Architecture, Design and Planning, leading his fellow graduates at Commencement. He is a candidate for the professional master’s of architecture degree. - Source (http://www.news.ku.edu/2010/may/7/nur.shtml)

On November 22, 2007, senior leaders of the government of Puntland as well as representatives of the CORMIO Engineering Company (who are the people undertaking the construction of the Bossaso airport runway) were at the runway where the former President of Puntland Mohamud Muse Hersi laid the first foundation stone of the runway and the work officially began. The main terminal building is also being built from scratch with the financial support of the local authorities.

When I went down that road back in 2003 (feels like such a long time ago), the section between Sheekh and Burco wasn't that bad for Somali standards, along with the mountain pass. It's from the mountain pass to Berbera that is awful, it's not even a road. Many drivers bypassed it and made their own trails to the side.

It would be very good for it to be worked on, perhaps the work could be done during the evening hours because 40C+ temps is not good for such a labor intensive project. While they are at it, why don't they fix the Hargeisa-Oodwenye-Burco road which is mine filled and barely even one.

Most of them are out of the country and who's going to pay them if they decide to return.

We all know what the TGF stands for.

Seeing as how corrupt TFG is, I would think that it would be easy to make good cash there if you know the right ppl. I don't think that's the problem. I think the problem is that although they have went to the diaspora and educated people for the executive roles, for the basic construction and building, they prefer foreigners.

Many bridges have been built or reconstructed in the past few years. They are modest in size but hey they do the job during the rainy season :)

Boosaaso - I like the design.

Aside from the first one, I dont like the way they look but they certainly do the job and get you from A --> B during the rainy seasons.

They do the job. When further development reigns and demands are bigger, then we could build signature bridges.

Somalia: Restoration of highway begins:

http://www.raxanreeb.com/wp-content/uploads/DSCF2712.jpg

Puntland Highway Authority PUNHA officially opened the reconstruction of the main highway in Puntland, Radio Garowe reports.

The main highway which was built more than 30 years ago is being restored after years of deterioration. The road being revamped links the capital Garowe and Galkayo and its current state has made traveling between the two cities an exhausting experience.

The Director of PUNHA Hasan Osman Ali said that the top priority for the Puntland government aside from security is infrastructure. He added that the restoration process of the roads needs not just the government efforts but the people's support is crucial to accomplish this goal. - Source (http://www.garoweonline.com/artman2/publish/Somalia_27/Somalia_Restoration_of_highway_begins.shtm)

I wonder how it will look when its finished. The design looks strange mixture of 3 storey, single story, square windows, arched windows etc.

Largest Windmill Arrives at Abaarso Tech

Abaarso, 10 March 2010 (Somalilandpress) – The largest wind turbine in the country arrived on the campus of Abaarso Tech on Tuesday after being shipped from China. When installed the wind turbine is expected to provide up to 30 KW of continuous power, enough for Abaarso Tech’s campus.

Daniel Chehata, the head of the physics department, said the whole assembly process could take less than a week. Staff is hopeful that shortly thereafter the windmill will start producing the majority of energy the secondary boarding school uses.

“This is a significant development for Abaarso Tech and for Somaliland. It is also another testament that our new school is committed to innovative approaches to development,” said Dr. Ahmed Esa, co-founder and board vice-chair.

Esa expects Abaarso Tech’s reliance on wind and other renewable energy sources to be an excellent indicator for the viability of these alternatives in resource lacking areas.

Experts consider a wind speed of 6.4 m/s to be economically viable. Some areas surrounding Hargeisa are estimated to have a yearly average wind speed much higher than this.

This could be good news for Somali consumers who currently pay between 80 US cents and 1 US dollar for 1 KW of energy. Wind turbine energy would be a significantly cheaper option to the diesel generators that provide nearly 100 percent of the energy that Somaliland uses. - Source (http://somalilandpress.com/largest-windmill-arrives-at-abaarso-tech-12435)

The above is by far the best initiative I have seen in the last twenty years by any Somali entrepreneur, Somalia has the fastest wind speeds on the continent and majority of the world. Every single public and private institution in Somalia should have their own wind-turbines, its cheaper than generators in the long run, not to mention environmentally sustainable.

Yeah, Somalia is pretty windy, man. The potential (along with solar) is amazing. Big ups to Abaarso Tech!
