Is there a big difference between rich and poor in Istanbul and how many inhabitants has it?
Very nice city but shopping malls aren't so nice. And 20 of them is noth much for a huge city like that.

For me this is always funny that people like Vatan write things like
"this is third largest shopping mall in the world"... especially as this
is not true... I were truly supprised with fact that that "third biggest"
shopping mall in the world has only 136 shops when for example in the
city I live (Warsaw) there are few shopping centers with bigger amount of
shops. For example Galeria Mokotow with 240 shops and 2600 parking spots
(www.galeriamokotow.pl) or Blue City with 200 shops and 2600 parking spots.
Moreover I'm sure that those two aren't between the world biggest...

Exceptional... Guys, I willhave to present you with the Greek mega shopping centres under construction. Indeed we have some projects under construction in the areas of 60000 sq metres and above, in Athens and Thessaloniki. The one in Thessaloniki actually will be 250000 square metres total area and some 100,000 sq metres built (roofed) areas. Anyway, Istanbul rocks as usual. One of the shopping centres that I don't see here is the Olivium (or something like that). I saw this one quite briefly while touring with our tourist bus. Quite a big mother, although the Akmerkez and the Metrocity are definitely tops of the list.

Also I like this one in Sisli, reminds me one of similar size in Long Island NY called "George Washington Mall" or something. Also, this combination of skyscrapers and supermarkets is unbeatable, especially when you have atriums where you can see the heights of the buildings while doing your shopping!!!

So how is MetroCity the world's third largest in the world if it is only 52,000m2. Bluewater in the UK is something like 154,000m2.

I had a look on the Akmerkez website and it says this:
"The Akmerkez complex is established on 180,000 square meters and comprises a four story shopping area, 14 and 17 stories of office space and 23 stories of residential area."

Now is that 180,000 m2 for the shopping centre, 2 office towers and the residential tower - cause it says "complex" and obviously they aren't part of the retail centre :?

As far as I know, Metrocity is the 3rd shopping mall of the World which has its own subway station (I mean direct connection).

Maybe it is refered as 3rd largest when it's compared as the whole complex including the social facilities, residental and other office towers.

This doesn't look like small to me. I insist that this has to be around 100,000 square metres of retail space excluding the towers. It looks slightly bigger that the International broadcasting centre that was used as the main TV broadcasting centre in the Athens Olympics, which was the biggest one to have ever been built for this purpose. That makes it good enough to be top, 2nd or 3rd in Europe.

Also, What talking about the world, how big is the "Mall of America" in Minessota (I think) and some others, including a HUGE one in Calgary Canada?

We definitely need the input of the North American forumers here of we want to be objective. For Greece, the biggest will be one under construction with 60000 sq metres of retail space in the suburb of Maroussi, to the north of Athens and close to the main Olympic complex, which will be completed this year. So, it's only understandable that in Istanbul which is around 3 to 3,5 times bigger than Athens, these Humungus centres have a high degree of viability.

Metrocity has 52,000 m², Bluewater just outside London is 154,000 m². Metrocity wouldn't be in the top 10 of Europe. Simply because Lakeside (5km north of Bluewater) and The Metro Centtre in Newcastle are only just smaller than Bluewater and each held the title previously of Europe's largest. I think one of the new centres in Portugal is larger though than Bluewater.

Nick, are we talking commercial space or size of area occupied? In Thessaloniki there is a new project which occupies some 250,000 square metres but only 45,000 of them will be built, with the rest being transformed into a park (I am talking about the new project being developed in Pylaia, a suburb outside of Thessaloniki, Greek forumers, if oyou know anything just inform us) . Also, the funny thing about the other one in Athens I was telling you, is that according to the construction company, the parking will have an area of 90,000 square metres.

If we can limit the discussion in terms of commercial space that is used (either for parking, warehouse/storage and retail space, and NOT any landscaped surroundings around the built area, that would be a good start.

In any case, I wasn't expecting anything less from London, which is, after all, London.

Metrocity is the third largest of Istanbul, not the world. :D

The largest "modern mall" of Istanbul (Sisli Culture & Trade Center: 420,000 m2), which is almost complete, will be the third largest of the world. ;)

The largest (and oldest) shopping mall of the world is also in Istanbul:

The Grand Bazaar (1461): 75 acres of "covered" area (2,5 times the size of The Pentagon in Washington DC, which has 29 acres of covered area), 4400 shops :D

gm2263 - no actual retailing space, that is where the 154,000 m² figure for Bluewater comes. In Britain total volume including car parks, parks, rollercoasters, toilets, etc aren't counted - only the actual amount of retailing floor space that is let out to retailing chains. I think the area of Bluewater would probably double to well over 300,000m² (no exact figure though - could be more) - that is if you add the multiple lakes, car parks and the actual old quarry that it is located in.

http://www.bluewater.co.uk/webfiles/highres/Bluwater_atdusk.jpg

Asimov -
- Grand Bazaar - 303,514 m² (75 acres)
- Sisli Culture & Trade Centre - 420,000m²

But is that for actual total area, or retailing area? Like do those figures only include the retailing area, or the car parks, walkways, parks, lakes, etc ..... I also thought the Grand Bazaar was an amalgamation of a variety of street markets, walkways, etc... not one united entity.

Is that Sisli Culture & Trade Centre really just a shoppping centre cause last time I looked the likes of a conference centre aren't actually part of the retailing environment? What is the actual figure figure for retailing area Asimov?

I do know however that Lakeside (just 5km no kidding and has a floor area around 140,000m² away from Bluewater) claims the title of the Europe's largest amalgamated retailing area. The shopping mall is large, but not the largest. However it has the likes of Ikea, B&Q, Costco and a few dozen more warehouse orientated retailing centres attatched to it

ASIMOV

The Grand Bazaar (1461) is the world's largest covered structure.

No other building has a roof which measures 75 acres.

http://www.emporis.com/en/wm/bu/?id=107296

The Pentagon in Washington DC was inspired by its labyrinth-like design.

nick_taylor
September 22nd, 2004, 01:47 AM
Its not the biggest though. Please state the actual retail-only figures for comparison with Bluewater. In other words, take away the parks, lakes, walkways, car parks, stations, conference and other non-retailing areas and give me an exact figure.

Cause saying that above figure for 420,000 m² is meaningless, especially when the actual name talks about "Culture & Trade" - how much is actually retail floorspace!!!!!

ASIMOV
September 22nd, 2004, 06:29 PM
It is - in terms of the distance you walk around it. ;)

And the size of the roof. ;)

And the size of the base. ;)

When you look from the top (i.e. from a satellite) no other building in the world looks bigger (has a larger roof/base than the Grand Bazaar)

Remember that The Grand Bazaar is a single-storey building (75 acres (303,514 m2) is the size of a single floor) whereas Sisli Culture & Trade Center achieves the size of 420,000 m2 as the "gross total of several floors" (it's a multi-storey building); just as the other figures (i.e. of the commercial center in Britain) are the "gross total of several floors."

Just an example:

The base of the Giza Pyramid measures 13 acres.

The base of the Grand Bazaar measures 75 acres.

:D

Monkey
September 22nd, 2004, 06:55 PM
Istanbul's Grand Bazaar doesn't have a single roof though. It's just a warren of streets covered by roofs in a fairly consistent style. And cummon in retail floor area it's nowhere near being the largest anything. Comparing it to the pyramids is a joke.

One slight problem there - 300.000sq ft = 91,400sq m = 6.88 acres

Bluewater has a retailing area of 154,000 m² and that would make it something like 68% larger than the Grand Bazaar.

Now Asimov - please source the actual retailing area of the Sisli Culture & Trade Centre. Don't include the likes of parks, toilets, walkways, car parks, lakes, management offices, residental, office, conference centres etc which are not retailing areas. It shouldn't be that hard. Don't forget to source it as well.

^ Yes good picture - and it's pretty clear that is not a single roof or structure but rather a warren of streets covered by roofs in a fairly consitent style.

Found anything yet our fellow Istanbul forumers regarding my query rather than a pretty little picture?

Do you guys even read the posts??? The dude from Edmonton pointed out the real largest shopping center (under one roof) in the World...as recognized by Guiness Book of World records (look it up yourselves...http://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/). "Bluewater" isn't even a 1/4 the size (and at 330 stores, not even close to 810 in WEM)!

Mall of America in Minneapolis is a very close second (same owners as WEM)...http://www.mallofamerica.com/
