CLIENT
Auckland University of Technology
DESIGN
Jasmax
The WG Precinct project will complete the Mayoral Drive and Governor Fitzroy corner of the AUT city campus in accordance with the aspirations and principles set out in the AUT City Campus Master Plan Report.
The project will provide AUT with, among many things; a better city edge and new gateway into the campus. The proposed development is to provide a new ‘shop front’ which showcases the university and strengthens connections and pedestrian links between city and campus and improves the quality and quantity of major plaza and open spaces.
The exterior areas are considered fundamental to the success of the AUT Campus Master plan and are to create clear linkages to the existing student amenities in adjacent buildings. Plaza areas are to provide:
Greening of the campus by introducing trees and grass areas wherever appropriate.
Linking of the Business Building, WG Precinct, The WH restaurant precinct and the Wellesley St entrance in a new primary pedestrian spine.
Strengthening of the link from the city and create a pedestrian friendly gateway to the AUT by closing the lower section of Governor Fitzroy Place to traffic and creating a new pedestrian zone.
Generous circulation paths between buildings and between different levels to cater for peak pedestrian flows at lecture/class change over.
Pause spaces that provide opportunities for rest and activities to the sides of the large open Plaza areas.
LANDSCAPE CONCEPT
Through the gifting of this land the Ngati Whatua effectively anchored the education precinct and AUT into the heart of the city.
This anchoring creates both tension and resultant settlement as the campus and the city are drawn then bound together. New opportunities for growth and change appear as landscapes and ecologies regenerate in the altered ground.
The anchor references both movement and pause. As people move through the shifted ground plan, remnants or ‘eddies’ provide moments of pause and rest within the landscape. The resultant public spaces directly relate to, and affect the buildings and urban edges that surround them.

There looks to be no great loss in replacing these buildings:

drosophila September 26th, 2010, 12:13 PM Definitely a good candidate for pedestrianisation it's hardly needed as a vehicle access route.

drosophila September 27th, 2010, 09:22 AM There's only one building with 13 spaces underground, they'll retain access via St Paul's Street.

DTAT December 16th, 2010, 11:29 AM We have started building our new learning precinct on our City Campus in central Auckland. The WG precinct will include: a 12-story tower; AUT's communication studies school; television and performance studios; lecture theatres; and shops. This page describes the precinct's features and invites you to make enquiries.
WG precinct: AUT's new gateway
Located at the corner of Mayoral Drive and Governor Fitzroy Place in the centre of Auckland, the new WG precinct will be a major gateway to AUT and will transform the university’s City Campus. It will provide 20,000 square metres of under-cover space, including a 12-floor tower, a 5-storey glass-roofed atrium, lecture theatres, cafe and plazas.
Design matches different ways of learning
The link between space, technology and the process of teaching has been carefully considered in the precinct’s design and choice of technology. The precinct will house specialist facilities for AUT’s school of communication studies, including television and performance studios, motion capture and green screen rooms. All lobbies and break out spaces will be designed as collaborative social study areas with a range of furniture types to cater for multiple ways of learning. High efficiency heating and air-conditioning, low-energy lighting and long-life materials also contribute to the visionary design and function of the buildings.
Linked to business and law, and hospitality and tourism buildings
The precinct will complete AUT’s Mayoral Drive frontage by linking to the faculty of business and law building and the tourism and hospitality building. Governor Fitzroy Place will become a primarily pedestrian area featuring an open public plaza.
This learning space will open to students at the start of semester 1, 2013.

done right very easy... they have been around for a few years now overseas and some buildings use them to clean the air of buildings...
you do wonder though how long the trend will last... but the beauty of it I guess is you can change the look/effect by changing the plants around... the qantas lounge wall in sydney is pretty cool

Seems a bit of a wasted space for a shared space to be honest. Parking garages and other rather yucky things don't contribute very well to a nice shared space.

There's only one parking garage on St. Paul Street, and the AUT one will inevitably get smaller over time, they've already converted two floors into lab spaces. It's actually quite a busy little street and has a nice cafe on it.

Refurbishment of major science building
13 September 2010
Plans for the extensive refurbishment of Building 303, commonly known as the Maths/Physics Building, have been approved and work will begin this summer.
The building, which was completed in the late 1960’s as part of the Science Centre, is some 15,824 square metres in area. In recent years the undergraduate physics laboratories, electrical engineering spaces and four lecture theatres were refurbished, and the new work will address the remainder of the building including plant, infrastructure and a structural upgrade. The refurbishment will bring the remainder of the building (over 7000m2) up to a level that meets the university’s objective of providing high quality infrastructure to support teaching, learning, research and community engagement of an international standard.
Outcomes will include better utilisation of space and the development of spaces that will encourage interdisciplinary activities in a modern and pleasant environment. Space allocations reflect current rather than historical boundaries and space will be generic wherever possible to allow future redistribution. Specialist laboratories will be relocated from the tower to free up space for offices and postgraduate use, and teaching spaces will be centralised on the lower floors. A new break-out space and enlarged shared common room will encourage interaction between staff and students from across the disciplines.
There will be major environmental improvements, with more natural light on some levels and a night-purge system to improve air quality and reduce energy use by lowering temperatures during warmer months.
Student life will be enhanced by the development of informal spaces with wireless networks, and support spaces for Māori and Pacific Island students in a prime position.
The refurbishment is part of the ongoing programme of campus development.
