'Brandead': A solo exhibition @ Gallery Orange
BRANDEAD, Collage, Montage & Installation is a solo exhibition of modern art by Edbon Sevilleno at Gallery Orange from January 3-31.
In the main gallery, a strong collection of works in alternative media uses the dynamics of branding and labeling and springs from a developing personal philosophy of one who has devoted 13 years in advertising and lived the life of an OFW as a way of supporting his family and his art.
He has seen the power of brand dominance to enslave thinking and reshape values. He has seen how brands take the place of family warmth and over-compensation functions as parental guidance. The collection is a comment on the onset of a pervasive contemporary reality that demands of dues too much for our hard-working modern heroes. It will be part of a travelling exhibition open only for viewing.
In the upper gallery, Sevilleno is coming up with a selling exhibition of contemporary abstract wall works. This is the artist's personal branding of his art. To him, abstraction is like music without lyrics, it is the measure of intelligent sophistication when an audience responds with the senses to images crafted in texture, color and emotional hues.
Negrense's pride, Edbon Maravilla Sevilleno, is a prolific visual artist, book illustrator, animator, graphic designer, a branding expert and formerly an Associate Creative Director of AP7 Riyadh affiliated with McCann-Erickson Worldwide as well as the key creative person in the royal Princess Maha Faisal's production of a 10-book series on The Adventures of Saif Bin Dha Yazeen, an ancient Arabian folk hero during the pre-Islamic era.
The nephew of UP Alumni in Fine Arts president Frank "Paking" Maravilla Verano who is past head of the Saturday Group, Sevilleno was educated in La Consolacion College of Fine Arts and is formerly connected with director Chito Roño's Optifex for its Hanna Barbera animation projects in the 80s. He was also the cartoonist of Borjok Comic Strip Series published in Masa magazine, sister paper of Malaya and was formerly the illustrator of award-winning books for children under Phoenix Publishing. He has worked in Riyadh for 17 years and is married to Svetlana Tan with two daughters Yara and Ezel.
Brandead, Collage, Montage & Installation opened 6:30 p.m. last Jan. 3.
The exhibition is Gallery Orange new year's visual art offering and is open for public viewing from 2-9 p.m., Tuesdays to Sundays, at Gallery Orange, Lopue's Mandalagan annex, Bacolod City.

Musical-fireworks a promising tourist attraction in Bago City (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/bacolod/musical-fireworks-promising-tourist-attraction-bago)
http://www.visayandailystar.com/2009/January/05/pix/bago.jpg
SOME 10,000 Bagoeños flocked to Manuel Y. Torres Sports Center last January 1 to witness a world-class display of beautiful and multi-colored fireworks.
The enchanting music plus vivid colors of the 15-minute fireworks display was part of the "Lights of Bago," a new year's gift of Mayor Ramon Torres to his constituents and fellow Negrenses.
The mayor said the display will become grander as the City Government promises to improve it, considering that it could be another attraction in the province of Negros Occidental.
"Lights of Bago" is a musically choreographed fireworks show, displayed to the rhythm of classical crossover soprano singer Sarah Brightman, composer George Frideric Handel and eloy, a German Hard Rock Band.
Raymond Stoffel, a retired international corporate lawyer from Luxembourg who is married to a Bagoeña, brought the idea of the musical fireworks show to the city and through him, the Luxembourg National proposed to jointly hold the program with Bago City officials.
The City Government welcomed the initiative and committed financial and logistical support to the program and slated to showcase it annually.
"It's just bringing the joy and the culture of my country to my wife's homeland...and the idea of sharing and tying up for brotherhood," said Stoffel.
The musical fireworks show was a product of an eight-month preparation initiated by Stoffel with the Peacock fireworks, a company in Bacolod City which imported specified pyrotechnical materials from Singapore and China. The Luxembourg, on the other hand, studied the musical set up and combination of lights and sounds together during the past months.
It was indeed a celebration of life for the Bagoeños and for the city of Bago as they ushered in together the Year of the Ox with colors, lights and rhythm. (George dela Cruz)

bacolodchamp January 5th, 2009, 01:29 PM La Castellana Celebrates Bailes de Luces; Sizzling Baywalk Bodies Perform
By Carla N. Cañet
The town of La Castellana is now in the peak of celebrating Bailes de Luces, one of the biggest local tourism events in the said town.
This is the town’s celebration of its Charter Day and a befitting culmination of the Christmas season, the festival is conceptualized as a festival of hope and thanksgiving.
Thanksgiving for all the blessings received in the year that was and hope for a prosperous new year.
Its unique feature is the use of lights or “luces” as props and adornment and its nocturnal festivities and street dancing.
Mayor Alberto Nicor, Vice Mayor Chad Feria and members of the Sangguniang Bayan welcome everyone to come and enjoy the celebration. In January 2, 2009, two members of the sizzling hot Bay Walk Bodies - Rejoice Rivero and Wella performed at the town’s plaza during the Employees Night.
The people enjoyed the night, filled with fun and entertainment.
Rejoice and Wella add color to the night of festivity, with their songs and and sexy dances.
Mayor Nicor, Vice Mayor Feria and some members of the Sangguniang Bayan also watched these Bay Walk Bodies perform on stage.
The town’s first lady was around and also the wife of Vice Mayor Feria.
The Baywalk Bodies asked the Mayor and Vice Mayor to dance with them on stage, but they both stayed where they were.
Some residents danced with the Bay Walk Bodies on stage and so much fun filled the air.
Negros Occidental 5th District Rep. Ignacio T. Arroyo sponsored the said lady entertainers to perform in La Castellana, a town which is part of his Congressional district.
It’s a yearly contribution of Cong. Arroyo to bring in artists and entertainers in La Castellana to add more spice to the celebration.
Rejoice and Wella also enjoyed being part of the town’s festivity saying that, “we’re here to entertain and have fun with the people of La Castellana,” they said.*

BacoLaodiat all set (http://www.visayandailystar.com/2009/January/08/topstory6.htm)
http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t226/cosmosnegros/BACOLAODIAT20.jpg
Despite the global economic crisis, the 4th BacoLaodiat Festival in Bacolod City will be held on January 23-26, 2009.
BacoLaodiat 2009 chairman Leonito “Diotay” Lopue yesterday said there was also a sugar crisis in the 1980’s when they came up with the MassKara Festival because they needed to generate economic activity.
For the Chinese the word “crisis” is the same as “opportunity”, he said. “We turn this crisis into an opportunity and we create tourism. So we decided to go on with the BacoLaodiat Festival this year,” he added.
If the people join the BacoLaodiat celebration, which will be highlighted by fireworks display, streetdancing activities and lighted lanterns, it may give them a positive outlook, Lopue said.
It was Mayor Evelio Leonardia who planned the BacoLaodiat Festival to help the economy of Bacolod, he said.
The Capitol Shopping Center, known as the China Town of Bacolod, was chosen as this year’s festival site where the Lantern Park will be opened on January 23.
Illuminated colorful giant lanterns featuring the 12 Zodiac signs made by local artists will be displayed in the area.
An animated and colorful parade will be held on Jan. 25 from the plaza to the festival site featuring illuminated floats, lanterns, lions and dragons alongside Chinese drumbeaters, and acrobats.
Lopue said they will display four giant oxen at the four corners of the Bacolod plaza and a dragon at the roof of the bandstand during the festival period.
He said they will also install four big dragon figures at the entrances of the festival site including the 12 Zodiac animals.
Lopue said the Chopsticks Alley will be along Narra and Tindalo Avenue which will cater to Chinese food starting January 23. There will also fireworks display nightly which they call a “symphony of lights and sparks,” he said.
Marivic Rio, event coordinator, said the public will be entertained by street performers like jugglers, unicyclist, flame dancers and acrobats who will be dancing to the tune of BacoLaodiat at the Chopsticks Alley.
She said 10 dance groups will compete in the street-dancing competition on January 24 which will kick off at 6:30 p.m. from SM Bacolod to the festival site. She said a total of P160,000 in cash prize is at stake for the winners.
Rio said they want the BacoLaodiat to be known as a lantern festival and as a festival of fireworks.
She said that, like the mayor, they also envision BacoLaodiat to be a premier tourism, trade and marketing event for the city. But their underlying objective is to really create a genuine cooperation and harmony between the Filipino and Chinese communities, she said.
They will also come up with a production finale number this year that will showcase the coming together of the two cultures, she added.
Leonardia said they would like to thank Councilor Homer Bais for coming up with an ordinance institutionalizing the BacoLaodiat Festival.
“We can assure the international market that this is a festival that will be held every year with the support of the Chinese community and the BacoLaodiat committee,” he said.
Leonardia said they are looking forward to the time when the BacoLaodiat will become a full-blown tourism event.
He said that, among the targeted markets they have will be the Chinese themselves because of the projection that maybe, given 15 years or so, a hundred million Chinese will be going out of their country during the holidays, especially the Chinese New Year.*CGS

bacolodchamp January 8th, 2009, 12:17 PM Guimaras RORO port to be finished this year
Guimaras is expected to complete this year the construction of its roll on-roll off wharf in Sibunag town that will link the province to Negros Occidental through Pulupandan in the south.
Gov. Felipe Hilan Nava said P18-million has already been appropriated for the construction of road support for the nautical highway.
Sibunag wharf is also connected to Iloilo City through Jordan town.
Earlier, the construction of the P2-million Eco Port, including a terminal building, as part of the infrastructure program for the Metro Iloilo-Guimaras Economic Development Council has also been proposed in the province.
Nava said that aside from its port project, Guimaras will also pursue more road and other infrastructure projects this year to complement the promotion of the province as an eco-tourism destination.
Also, two hospitals will be constructed, including the Buenavista Hospital and the four-storey provincial hospital in Jordan.
Nava said the P30 million loan for the provincial hospital has already been approved and the construction of the initial two-storey would start soon.
The hospital will have new facilities and all private rooms to be developed for economic enterprise. It will have an official capacity of 75 beds but Nava said they aim to make it a 100-bed hospital.*NLG

Christendom January 12th, 2009, 11:12 AM ^^forever scrapped na atong project nga coal power plant because of environmental concerns. ginpamalabagan sang church and green groups ato nga project ano pa wala na push through. i don't know about about the wind farm. all i know is that may ara na sa san carlos and there are proposals to put up in the cauayan and ilog area.
ok lang kun nagdaug ang opposition,,,iwas danger of pollution and demanded for clean renewable energy...the coal plant project was rejected but its site is now being eyed as a possible site for a wind farm project gali …
Negros island has become an Asian model of community-based clean energy generation, according to Greenpeace. The 1st province in the Philippines to embrace a 100% renewable energy target. the coastal towns of Pulupandan and Cauayan both blessed with constant strong winds. Bago City have also been identified by the Energy department as potential sites for wind farms by FirstGen Renewables. ..the Wind Farm in San Carlos City is the 2nd wind farm in Southeast Asia next to one in Ilocos Norte, a 30-MW...Also the first province in the Philippines to have an E-jeep. Negros is so much blessed

Halcrow is conducting a technical review of the proposed wind farm, including a review of topographical and mapping data, identification of key terrain features and preliminary assessment of access routes. The project also involves consultations with stakeholders, review of landownership & land access issues and initial assessment of grid connection issues.
Halcrow will also undertake design refinement, including selection of appropriate technology options for turbines, site layout optimisation for energy yield and feasibility design layout.
WIND POWER TO LIGHT UP NEGROS (http://www.newsflash.org/2004/02/ht/ht006813.htm)
Over at Sitio Wayang, Barangay Patic — the very site that rejected the 50-MW coal fired power plant — there stands a 40-foot anemometer, the precursor of an on-grid wind farm called Pulupandan wind energy development project. This project is being packaged by Solarco president Robert Lopez Puckett for presentation to potential investors.
Once operational, the wind farm will be the first of several major clean energy projects envisioned for the province by GRIPP.
GRIPP and its partner, Solarco and the local community have put up 25 wind turbines in Pulupandan town, with a capacity of 50 megawatts.
GRIPP is currently involved in resource assessments and pre-feasibility studies in three potential wind farm sites in Negros .
Solarco president Robert Lopez Puckett is bringing and setting up the windmill technology in Negros and hopes to launch it by January 2007, alongside other alternative fuel initiatives that the company is setting up in the province.

The town of Cauayan in Sojoton Point, where Greenpeace has already erected 3 small wind turbines to demonstrate the viability of wind energy for lighting and other household purposes with the capacity of 400-W each, is ideal for wind farm development because of its proximity to both the main highway and to transmission lines. This project is able to power 21 households.

State-owned Philippine National Oil Co. (PNOC) is also looking at several sites in the Philippines to harness wind power.
The areas up for wind development include Carmen and Oslob in Cebu; Bago City and Cauayan in Negros Occidental; Allen-Lavesares and Calbayog City in Northern Samar; Siquijor; Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte; Bantay, Ilocos Sur; Bani and Bolinao in Pangasinan; Maconacon, Isabela; Tagaytay, Cavite; San Andres, Quezon; and Mercedes and Daet in Camarines Norte.

Tuesday, January 20, 2009
KABANKALAN City -- Tribu Umpong of Barangay Tabugon bagged the championship crown in Sunday's 33rd Sinulog Festival held at the city's football field.
Back-to-back champion Tribu Tres of Barangay 3 failed to make it in the Hall of Fame when it only landed in the second place. Placing third is Tribu Lasang of Barangay Magballo.
Tribu Umpong also pocketed the best in choreography and best in costume award in the street dancing category.
The other participating groups include Barangays 4, 5, 6, 7, Binicuil, Cabugao, Daan Banwa, Orong, Salong, Tampalon, Tan-awan and Tapi.
Winners in the sound and drum event held last January 17 were Tribu Nueve, Barangay 9 as first placer with Tribu Camansi, Barangay Talubangi and Tribu Tres, Barangay 3 as second and third placers, respectively.
Provincial Tourism officer Jennylind Cordero was chairman of the board of judges.
Present during the festivities were Gov. Isidro Zayco, provincial police director Manuel Felix, Provincial Board Members Adolfo Mangao Sr. and Miller Serondo, City Mayor Pedro Zayco and other Kabankalan officials, former Bacolod City Rep. John Orola Jr., Provincial Information officer Ma. Lina Sanogal, ABS-CBN's "Banana Split' talents, and corporate sponsors.
The Jaycees Inc. of Kabankalan is this year's major sponsor of the festival.
Tribu Umpong got P50,000 in cash and P300,000 worth of livelihood projects. Tribu Tres, on the other hand, won P30,000 in cash and P200,000 worth of livelihood projects, while Tribu Lasang got P20,000 and P100,000 worth of livelihood projects.
The Sinulog Foundation gave out the cash prizes while the Jaycees shouldered the funds for livelihood projects.
The eight-hour festival was capped with a fireworks display and a live band performance.
Gov. Zayco, former Kabankalan City mayor, said he is honored that annually conducting the Sinulog Festival has brought a lot of opportunities for the once quiet but now booming city.
"Kabankalan's Sinulog is an experience we can assure our fun-loving visitors would not forget," Mayor Zayco Jr. said.
Sinulog Festival has become a yearly tradition for the Kabankalanons as it has already drawn not only economic activities to the city but honor, dignity and pride as well as tourism potential.
Meanwhile, on its 35th year, the Dinagsa Festival of Cadiz, some 65 kilometers north of Bacolod City, is offering its version of Santo Niño dance on January 25. The city's festival is extended until January 26 when the city celebrates the Feast of Sto. Niño de Cadiz.
Dinagsa features fluvial and civic parade where the image of the Holy Child Jesus is carried aboard a fishing boat lavishly decorated with flower and other adornment; as well as pageantry, various games and sports, among others.
Like Kabankalan, the feast will be highlighted by the Dinagsa tribes' contest which will showcase the "Ati tribes" garbed in colorful costumes that reflect the entirety of the Cadiznons through artistry, craftsmanship and ingenuity.
Dinagsa and Sinulog festivals are held both as cultural and religious rituals honoring and reminiscing the early days when the Christian Filipinos, who were being attacked by the rebel Moros, were saved by Sto. Niño.

Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental (20 January) -- This city concludes its 33rd Sinulog Festival with Tribu Ompong emerging as champion and 17-year-old lass from Bacolod crowned as Hara sang Negros 2009, among many other highlights to celebrate the festivities.
Ompong of Brgy. Tabugon has outdone the other tribes in the Tribal Competition and brought home P50,000 in cash plus P300,000 worth of projects for the barangay.
Second place Tribu Tres of Brgy. 3 and third place was Tribu Lasang of Brgy. Magballo received P30,000 and P20,000 cash prize with P200,000 and P100,000 worth of projects for the barangays respectively.
The awarding was done at the city's football field and was witnessed by the merry makers from all over the province including guests from other areas in the country and some foreigners as well.
Meanwhile, 17- year-old Education Student of the Colegio San Agustin Jellianne Camille Rose Dinorog bested 19 other lass and was crowned Hara sang Negros 2009.
Dinorog's answer to the final question – describe Kabankalan City in one word – "progressive" made her clinched the title.
The newly crowned Hara sang Negros excels in impromptu speaking, dancing and singing in her school.
Kabankalan City Mayor Pedro Zayco was at the helm of the 33rd Sinulog Festival. (PIA/EAD) [top]

who said SM CITY BACOLOD has no MALL GOERS and only 1 (one) 4x4 Truck is parked at the parking area/s?
here's a random experience today at SM CITY BACOLOD around 1.30PM - 2.15PM which will disprove all the accusations by "someone" that SM City Bacolod is a No-Man Mall...

We (I and Suv) spotted ONE 4x4 Truck...

so who said SM BACOLOD HAS ONLY 1 (one) 4x4 Truck?

As I See It
PANAAD sa Negros Festival is already on its 16th year! It is tagged as "Festival of Festivals". It is the Negrense way of thanking God for His goodness, the Negrense tradition of showcasing culture, art, agriculture and tourism.
For the Province of Negros Occidental, this is not just a showcasing of the best but a packaging of public service with compassion through the vision of Gov. Isidro Zayco in his HEARTS PLUS program (Health, Environment, Agriculture, Roads and Infrastructure, Tourism and Trade, Social Services, Personal Development, Livelihood Opportunities, Urban / Rural Development and Systems and Governance.
In the Philippines, Panaad sa Negros Festival is the best provincial tourism event (provincial festival category). This award was given last year by the Association of Tourism Officers of the Philippines (ATOP) and the Department of Tourism (DoT).
We salute the concerted efforts of the 13 cities and 19 municipalities of Negros Occidental. The coordination of the mayors, tourism officers, festival coordinators and tourism front liners is magnanimous.
This year, the festival will start on April 18 and will end on April 25. The venue is still Panaad Park and Stadium in Mansilingan, Bacolod City.
The organizers have identified 12 major events. They are exhibits of festival costumes, motorcade, festival dance competition, Lin-ay sang Negros 2009 pageant, drum and bugle corps competition, Latin dance contest, Negros pop idol, composo and pop song writing and interpretation.
Main attractions are the destination pavilions, product display and sale.
Tour packaging per LGU and guided tours in the park will be facilitated by the members of the Association of Tourism Officers of Negros Occidental (ATONO), the Negros Island Tourism, Inc. (NITI) and colleges / universities offering tourism courses in Bacolod City.
Added activities in the area include "Hataw sa Panaad" at the football field, thanksgiving rituals, tourism and trade fair, product display, market matching, agri-festival of organic farm crops, fair on livestock and dairy products and dance costume exhibits.
There will be a garden show also to be sponsored by the garden clubs. Float competition will be managed by the local government units with their local beautiful girls. Fireworks display will also do wonders to Panaad skies during the opening and closing programs.
Sports competition in different fields will have its day and "bulang" will bring together the promoters to arena with their best breed of fighting cocks. Capitol and government employees will find a fancy day for their families and friends.
The nature lovers consider earth day for their best interest - trees, environment-friendly technology and literature for Mother Earth. Livelihood Skills Olympics sponsored by TESDA will present famous Negrense inventors and updated scientific knowledge for comfortable living.
We are expecting local and foreign tourists. Again, we will bring visitors to our booths to see what we have in our town and cities - food, entertainment, tourist attractions, investment packages, and best practices.
Visiting Panaad Park is knowing Negros Occidental in one hour. Our tourism staff members are there to distribute colorful brochures featuring our fine beaches, challenging caves, delightful underwater sports, gustatory delights, adventure events, living museums, handicrafts and fascinating legends.
The festival sites will be alive again. Vendors will be in place to convince festivalgoers to buy souvenir items, which will remind them of Bacolod and Negros. Jeepney and taxi drivers will have good income for the week and even downtown Bacolod will be teeming with faces who will dine in restaurants and shop in malls. Towns and cities will also benefit because tour operators will bring visitors to the ancestral houses in Silay, shoreline restaurants in Balaring, mural of Christ with a craggy face at VMC Church, Chapel of Cartwheels at Hda. Sta. Rosalia, steam locomotive at HPCO, Balay ni Tana Dikang in Talisay and mansion ni Tan Juan in Bago.
For a while, Panaad will bring the politicians together in a joyful ceremony. Celebrities from GMA and ABS-CBN will bring sponsors and Manila media will take it as an opportunity to discover things other than Panaad. Presidentiables and senatoriables will give speeches and distribute caps, fans, calendars and promises!
Panaad is a melting pot where snatchers and pickpockets will play the game of cats and dogs with our police officers. It is a place where lovers will make their dates and renew commitments. It is a venue where family and friends will share laughter and camaraderie. The scenario will be for both sinners and saints.
Let us thank God for Panaad and his blessings. Let us be reminded also that Panaad is there to measure where the Negrenses are going.
