Binalbagan to celebrate 437th fiesta

The 1st Balbagan Arts Festival will be launched at the kick-off day of the 437th annual fiesta of Binalbagan, in Negros Occidental, tomorrow, that will run until May 15, a press release from the town said.

The Balbagan Arts Society has come up with the arts festival as a venue for aspiring artists of the town, at the Balbagan Arts Festival Center, with the support of Mayor Alejandro Mirasol, the press release said.

Composer and songwriter, Augurio Abeto, who composed popular folk songs such as “Dandansoy” and “Dalawidaw,” is from the town, the press release said.

The center will also house an art exhibit open to the public until May 15 and will feature a diorama of the two folkloric legends of the town, a heritage corner of photographs and memorabilia, a festival costume area and a tourism booth.

The new Binalbagan theme song composed by Rey Antiquiera will also be officially aired, and a 45-foot lighted Golden Serpent Icon will be unveiled.

On May 11, a visual arts and sculpture workshop by the Silay United Group of Artists will be held at the new AVR of the Mayor Pedro Yulo III Sports and Cultural Center. The free workshop is open to the first 30 registrants, the press release said.

An art competition will be held for on-the-spot painting for adults, teens and kids, and there will be contests for headdress making, mask making and digital photography, on May 12.

Patrons of the competitions include Mayor Alejandro Mirasol, film director and photographer Jay Abello, theater enthusiasts Jean Natuel and Elaine Montelibano, and Earthday Village, the press release added.*

PIA Press Release
2009/05/11
Exec cites three malls for compliance with Bacolod ordinance (http://www.pia.gov.ph/default.asp?m=12&fi=p090511.htm&no=42)

Bacolod City (11 May) -- Bacolod City Councilor Wilson Gamboa Jr. was impressed with the compliance of three malls in the city in implementing City Ordinance No. 311.

During a recent ocular inspection, Robinson's Place Bacolod, S M City Bacolod and Lopue's East showed that they have complied with C.O. 311, "an ordinance requiring chairs or benches for the use of salespersons in business establishments in the city of Bacolod."

"I am really impressed by the way the three malls have observed the ordinance and I wish other establishments can follow their example of providing the proper benches and chairs for their employees," Gamboa said who was accompanied by various cause-oriented groups during the inspection in the city.

"I would also like to make special mention of the SM City, that, for the first time, opened their doors for ocular inspection of their vicinity with whom cause-oriented groups are part of the observing team," he added.

Gamboa, with Councilor Jocelle Batapa, recently passed a resolution urging the city government to strictly monitor the ordinance because it has long been observed that some establishments are ignoring the ordinance and enforcement authorities have not been giving full attention in its implementation.

Both lawmakers asserted that "one of the most important aspects of social protection on labor is the assurance of a good and healthful working condition in the workplace, especially for our women workers."

According to the ordinance "hormonal changes occur on female workers during their monthly period such as pain, dysmenorrheal, headaches, nausea and feeling of uneasiness. Continuous standing of female workers for more than an hour in their workplaces causes adverse effect to their health conditions."

Thus, the appeal for "female employees having their monthly period to be given a special consideration in the manner of performing their tasks or duties."

Pag-lumotan, SPM Roberto Bobby Rojas, SPM Cata-lino Alisbo, Eli Tajanlangit-Silver Masskara Festival Director, Maritess Ramir-President Manokan Country and other officials, at the Festival Park.* (Jun de los Reyes/NDB photo)

Mayor Evelio R. Leonardia, SPM Alex A. Paglumotan-Festival Chairman, SPM Roberto “Bobby” Rojas, SPM Catalino Alisbo, Maritess Ramir-President of the Manokan Country and other officials spearheaded the launching of the 1st Bacolod City Inasal Festival at the Festival Park, Manokan Country, Reclamation Area yesterday.

“We create something out of nothing”. This is a new tourist attraction of Bacolod City, a new dream because of its own unique attraction”, Mayor Evelio R. Leonardia said.

Bacolod City has created a reputation in the whole country as the “Chicken Barbecue Capital of the Philippines.” This is because of the popularity of its delicious savory native chicken, it is another Bacolod City’s gourmet identity in the country.

Bacolod celebrates Bacolaodiat Festival on the 1st quarter of the year; Inasal Festival on the second quarter; Masskara Festival on the last quarter while on the 3rd quarter is being proposed to have an International Food Festival, Mayor Leonardia pointed out.

Festival Chairman Alex A. Paglumotan said,” The purpose of Bacolod City’s 1st Inasal Festival 2009 are: 1. To revive the economic climate of the Manokan Country 2. To bolster the tourism image of the Manokan Country as a tourist destination 3. To institutionalize Manokan Country’s legacy. 4. To improve and enhance its structural image.

The Grand Opening Program as scheduled on May 15, 2009-Friday will have Governor Isidro P. Zayco as the main guest of honor and speaker. On the next day will be awarding of the founders of Manokan Country since it was situated before, along Cuadra Street. It started in 1949, how chicken barbecue started from the fish special “caraho” and “aloy” which were barbecued and sold at the sidestreets and intersection corner. There will be a logo design contest, culinary arts exhibit activities with 7 to 8 chicken competitional events organized by the Bacolod City Tourism Office.

SPM Paglumotan clarified that the Bacolod City First Chicken Inasal Festival has an allocated budget of P500,000 including site development. Raw materials or supply of chicken is in the form of donations by the private sectors, like San Miguel Corporation and Magnolia . Expected 54,000 chicken cuts, legs, breast etc are ready for grilling. The Group of Contractors in Negros will provide the G.I sheets, bamboos and other paraphernalias for the grilled chicken and among others, who will participate and the volunteers to grill the chicken (sinugba).

Senator Francis “Chiz” Escudero will also grace the occasion. There are no hidden or motive agenda behind the launching of the Bacolod City 1st Inasal Festival 2009. It is just to help improve and revive the climate of the Manokan Country. Paglumotan hopes that this will generate success and unity and a unifying factor among Bacolodnons. It’s another first in Leonardia’s administration, it was pointed out.

As to Bacolod City’s Chicken Inasal, SPM Bobby Rojas said: “Basta Bacolod Manamit na. Basta Bacolod City, Bing Leonardia na.”

Maritess Ramir, President of Manokan Country gave thanks to the City Government of Bacolod for giving importance and significance to the Ma-nokan Country and its legacy to the City of Bacolod with their whole-hearted support and cooperation in making this project a success.*

Bacolod all set for longest chicken BBQ bid (http://www.thenewstoday.info/2009/05/13/bacolod.all.set.for.longest.chicken.bbq.bid.html)
May 13, 2009

BACOLOD CITY -- Negros Occidental Governor Isidro Zayco will be the guest of honor and speaker at the opening of the 1stBacolod Inasal Festival on May 15.

Councilor Alex Paglumotan said they invited the governor because he is the father of the province with Bacolod as the capital city.

Senator Francis Escudero on the other hand will be the speaker at the closing on the 19th.

Paglumotan said they want to revive the economic climate in the Manokan Country and establish it as part of the city’s tourism destination.

The 6-day festival will start with a grand parade at 3 p.m. on Friday from the new government center and will end at the SM City North Wing parking lot, across the Manokan Country.

The awarding of the founders of the Manokan Country, who include Leonardia, will be held during the opening, while other key players will also be commended by the city.

Electric MassKara will perform on Saturday to give those who have not seen the activity in October, an opportunity to experience it in summer.

Paglumotan said that with the help of the private sector and sponsors, they hope to establish a world record on May 19 for having the longest barbeque grill.

He said this will be held at the SM City North Terminal and will involve about 54,000 pieces of cut chicken, about 600-800 sacks of charcoal and 922 pieces of G.I. sheets. These are all donations from sponsors and the city is not spending for this, he added.

Paglumotan also said a group of contractors will help them build a 4.5 to 5 kilometers barbeque grill. The Boracay fire dancers will be an added attraction during the festival, he also said.

“We strongly contend that chicken barbeque started in Bacolod,” Paglumotan said.

The city has allocated a budget of P500,000 for the festival and the city also spent for the site development amounting to P1.5 million to improve the Manokan Country.

The Inasal Festival is a brainchild of Mayor Evelio Leonardia to promote the famous ‘inasal’ of Bacolod not only in the country but even to the world as it vies for Guinness World Record on its first year.

Chef to present ‘inasal’ variants

Chef Ed Quimson, one of Manila’s top culinary personalities, will present new chicken inasal variants in Bacolod City tomorrow, a press release from the Silver MassKara Festival Organization Inc. said.

Quimson will present Korean and Japanese flavored chicken inasal as part of the “Globalization of Bacolod Flavors” program of the city. It is part of the preparations for the 30th MassKara Festival in October.

The program is designed to assist food producers enhance Bacolod delicacies for different tourism markets, Mayor Evelio Leonardia said.

The development of new chicken barbecue variants is the first phase of the program, SMFO chairman, Eli Tajanlangit, said.

“We will keep the original flavor of our chicken inasal, but we should be ready to present choices to the larger tourism market,” Tajanlangit added

The program is assisted by the San Miguel Culinary Institute to develop, initially, Korean and Japanese flavored chicken inasal, he said.

Aside from the Korean and Japanese chicken inasal variants, Quimson will also present other chicken barbecue recipes and preparations like Tinola rice.

The demo-presentation on the preparation and cooking of the new variants will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Planta Hotel in Bacolod, the press release said.

This is free for the stall owners of Manokan Country and the restaurant operators of the Tourism Strip along Lacson Street, but they must register, either personally or by phone, at the MassKara office Tel. No. 433-7362.

The new variants will be introduced at the Manokan Country on Saturday, during the MassKara sa Manokan as part of the 1st Inasal Festival of Bacolod, the press release added.*

Our sweet, sweet delicacies

By Luci Lizarez

MANY moons ago, when I was still very involved with the Association of Negros Producers and during our annual trade fairs in Manila, we would always marvel at the brisk sales of the food people and gloat with envy! Guests would always come to buy our delicacies, and it is exhilarating to know that selling food has indeed put food in so many tables not merely for the producers but for the hundreds under their employ!

I seldom write about food because I can't even fry an egg, but since I was requested to entertain a Filipina-Aussie who writes for a food magazine in Australia, I was inspired to find out more about our treasures of the palate, which I love to devour in the first place. Our guest was Yasmin Newman, a dusky pretty lass, whose mother is from Mindoro and father from Sydney, Australia (great combination), and our first stop was Bongbong's in Alijis.

Bongbong's has really come full term. We were met by Nena Cañedo, mother-in-law of Bongbong whose birth name is Reynaldo Villen, who so amiably guided us in their production line. It was so interesting to see how piaya, which seems to be our most popular delicacy of Negros, was being mass-produced mechanically. How the muscovado was integrated into the flour, and turned into balls and then flattened and baked in stainless, open ovens. Rows upon rows of workers work sometimes in two shifts in order to supply the demand of its seven outlets here in Bacolod alone that are found in the two Gaisano malls, at Robinsons, SM, Lopues, the first store in Araneta, and the big operation in Alijis.

Most great things come from humble beginnings. As it is nurtured by showers of blessings plus hard work and family collaborative and collective effort, Bongbong is the success story that it is today because of all these encouraging factors. With a rolling capital of a mere P80, Bongbong, with the help of his family, started by peddling piaya in the sidewalk of the airport, made "libod" in the subdivisions, or sold to vendors in the "pantalan," Ceres terminal, and in Central Market. All these were done by tricycle or trisikad until blessings and hard work paid off and a store was opened near Yulo's Park. Then a bigger one near the litsonan, one in Greenplains, and finally to have their own building in Alijis that was inaugurated about seven years ago. Aside from the seven local outlets, Bongbong's has its own outlets in Cebu, Antique, and Roxas.

Our next stop was Virgie's in Rosario St. Virgie Ong Chua was not around because she was busy with the Bulawan Awards of the Showroom, being a two-time winner. Brother Tony Ong was there to meet us and gave us a few insights to the enterprise that is Virgie's. Of their heralded products, the mango tart and the caramel tarts seemed to be the most famous.

In a conversation with Virgie over the phone, Virgie is also the one who championed Governor Bitay's call to look for an alternative income-generating scheme to help augment the nil take home of so many including the many housewives that made up the core of the Association of Negros Producers. Virgie is one of the many food producers who we would just look with envy during the trade fairs when swarms of buyers would hover over her booth.

Virgie says that it was really to heed the call of the times that pushed her into the food industry. What started in 1974 has become a flourishing enterprise that has not only blessed Virgie but also the many workers that she has employed. Today, the building that now houses her many delicacies was once a rented home. With the success of Virgie's, she was not only able to survive the economic trials of life but was also able to purchase the property and finally build their store with the factory in the second floor. Isn't that just a lovely story? I'm truly a sucker for beautiful endings!

Virgie says that to this day, she has maintained the quality of her products and has not entertained the thought of commercializing her ingredients despite the lure of bigger bucks. Because of that faithfulness to quality over quantity, Virgie has established many links in Manila, Cebu, Iloilo, and Cagayan who buy from her regularly.

Yasmin wanted authentic, ancestral cuisine, so I suggested that we must visit Sweet Greens of Millie Kilayko and Tima Lacson in Lacson St. across PNB. I have journeyed with Millie and Tima from our ANP days, and their tandem has seen many revolutions and evolutions in their products and merchandise. From t-shirts to ceramics to plants to so many others until finally finding and settling with their original bliss... food! There are many original dishes whipped up by ancestors from the Locsin and Lacson sides that have now been revived by the two industrious ladies. Governor Bitay himself has created his own bottled bangus that is also a highlight of Casa Carmela, the company name of the goodies of Millie and Tima.

One innovation that truly struck me was the miniature piaya, which they call piayitos. They are bite-sized piayas and guess what... it's served in the business class and VIP lounge of Philippine Air Lines. Bravo! Take a bow! Millie says that she knows what class a person is flying when they mention that they have eaten their piayitos on board a Transatlantic or Pacific flight!

At a party once held at Sweet Greens, Millie and Tima served the piayitos with dulce de gatas. Geez, for the glutton that I am, I practically devoured a whole bowl of dulce de gatas with the piayitos! Que horror, but truly kanamit!

There are still so many delicacies of Negros, which I shall talk about in future write-ups. Despite the fact that I can't bake or cook (and have no ambition to include that in my future wish list), I am a great eater, and that should be reason enough for me to enjoy great cooking and even write about them!

The delicacies of Negros have brought much food to so many tables. From humble beginnings to finding one's bliss, food has been an important factor to our three features today! May God bless us always with the abundance of His grace and more trips to the dining table! Bon appétit!

BINALBAGAN FIESTA: Valerie Concepcion wows crowd (http://www.visayandailystar.com/2009/May/15/people.htm)

Noontime TV show “Wowowee” host Valerie Concepcion added color and fun to the fiesta of Binalbagan, Negros Occidental, Monday night when she performed, through the courtesy of Rep. Ignacio Arroyo (Neg. Occ., 5th District), a press release from his office said.

Everybody was eager to see her, and when she came out, the crowd of approximately 10,000 residents, was shouting and leaping for joy, and applauding her.

Concepcion danced and sang and invited two males from the audience to be with her on stage.

Mayor Bebot Mirasol was also on the stage, with provincial officials, such as Board Members Enrique Miguel Lacson and Dr. Melvin Ibañez, the press release said.

Concepcion said she was pleased with the people of Binalbagan and its officials, and also with Arroyo for a warm welcome, and that she also had much fun.

Gerald Santos, Pinoy Pop Star of GMA-7, also performed during the Binalbagan fiesta. The crowd also positively responded to him, the press release added.*

Twinkling with Ninfa Leonardia
OPINIONS

GMA and Sharon are inasal fans

This could be a big boost for the ongoing Chicken Inasal Festival at the Manokan Country of Bacolod City. While on her way to lunch after the very successful awarding rites of the Regional Development Council Thursday, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo reportedly said that she missed the city’s chicken inasal which she used to have when in Bacolod. Forthwith, the gallant governor of Negros Occidental, Pidio Zayco, sent off an order for it, and, sure enough, La Presidenta had inasal with her lunch. I wonder if anybody from the festival team had been there to record the incident?

* * *

But, this is not to further blow our own horn about our local inasal (I mean the original ones from the pioneers who had started first at Araneta Street, and later at Cuadra Street near the public plaza, and not from the Johnnies-come-lately), but it has really become the taste of presidents and megastars. During a visit to the U.S. several years ago, I was told by some friends there that they had seen a TV interview of now Senator Kiko Pangilinan and he was being asked about his wife, megastar Sharon Cuneta who was then in the family way.

* * *

Filipinos, being unabashed about asking the most personal questions especially from politicians and movie stars, asked Kiko about Sharon’s pregnancy, and what special food she longed for while conceiving. My friends said Pangilinan told them that Sharon craved for Bacolod chicken inasal, and they were lucky because he had a friend, Bing Leonardia, in Bacolod who was the one he would call to send the inasal. I think the organizers of the festival should give me, at least, one free inasal today for this plug.

Legendary Snake Movements Focus of Binalbagan Festival
PAYAO SWEEPS ALL AWARDS

Barangay Payao performers proved they do the snake-and-shrimp-pounding movements in choreographed forms better than the rest when they topped the 2nd Balbagan Festival of Binalbagan and won all special awards in the street and gym competitions held May 15.

It was a two-in-a-row triumph for the Payao entry in the competition that highlighted the 437th founding anniversary of Binalbagan. Placing second and third in the 15-barangay competition were Bagroy and Sto. Rosario, respectively.

Payao won P60,000 in cash and P50,000 worth of development projects for topping the competition. It also won a combined P40,000-prize for winning the special awards for costume, rhythm, headdress and snake icon with Panoy Cabalcar winning the be best choreographer recognition for the two-time barangay champion, said Alfredo Gonzales, municipal planning and development officer.

Bagroy and Santo Rosario won P40,000 and P30,000 and P20,000 cash and another P20,000 in development projects, respectively, Gonzales added

The awards were presented by Mayor Alejandro Mirasol and Vice Mayor Emmanuel Aranda who both thanked the townsfolk for their unity as they also encouraged them to further do their share toward greater growth in Binalbagan.

The spirit of unity was reflected in the festival icon, the Golden Serpent, which, organizers said, represents the townsfolks’ aspirations for peace and prosperity.

The other participating barangays were San Juan, San Pedro, San Jose, San Vicente, San Teodoro, Santol, Biao, Marina, Enclaro, Canmoros, Progreso and Paglaum.

Beat, Rhythm and Colors of Balbagan

For a festival just on its second year, Balbagan, which was held May 15 in Binalbagan proved to be an interesting showcase of history, folklore, choreography and costumes.

Balbagan Festival, Mayor Alejandro Mirasol said, focuses on two historical and folkloric facets of the town: the pounding of shrimps, a major product of the seawaters of the town, for trading purposes, and the huge snake that blocked the Binalbagan River. The pounding and the beating using bamboo poles and sticks have been incorporated in the rhythmic components of the dance presentation.

Dancers, representing 15 barangays, performed seven basic movements, replicating the gyrations of the snake, which is considered a historical icon of the town. They were also clad in the colors of snakes — red, orange, yellow, green and blue – and wore accessories and headgears depicting the snake theme.

A highlight of the performances was the simulation of the movement of a giant snake through hand props and body actions.

^^i think migs they did a total overhaul of how they celebrate their fiesta. before, they call it lumbayag which is patterned after bacolod's masskara. honestly, it was a poor imitation of masskara. i'm glad they changed their style which is relevant to their history. dancers in snake like costumes dancing to the sound of bamboo beats. for me, its more original and very symbolic of how binalbagan is well known of according to legends.:)

The Alindahawan Falls in Don Salvador Benedicto town*

‘DSB is compact Philippines’
BY CARLA GOMEZ

Don Salvador Benedicto town, which its officials hope to become the summer capital of Negros Occidental, is a place where, at its peak, the clouds nearly touch the ground, the air is cool and fresh, and some of nature’s most beautiful attractions abound.

“It is compact Philippines, tourist attractions you find in other provinces you can find in Don Salvador Benedicto,” Negros Occidental Board Member Nehemias dela Cruz said.

Dela Cruz, former mayor of DSB, is the author of a resolution seeking the declaration of the town as the summer capital of Negros Occidental.

His son Marxlen dela Cruz is the mayor of the town.

Like the Pagsanjan Falls in Laguna, DSB has the Talos, Malatan-og and Alindahawan falls and more, and it has a lot of caves like in Palawan, Board Member de la Cruz points out.

And, like Banaue, DSB now has more than 3,000 hectares of rice terraces, he said.

The town, like Bukidnon, is also home to some of the sweetest pineapples, and to unique flora and fauna, including endangered species, he added.

Among its unique flowers are the Mickey Motto, Miracula Magnifica, and the Jade Bind.

And DSB has scenic zigzag roads, and one passes a gravity road to get to the town where a car moves upward even with the engine off.

DSB located in the center of the hinterlands of northern Negros Occidental, 42 kilometers or about 45 minutes from Bacolod City, was created from remote barangays of San Carlos City, and the towns of Calatrava and Murcia. It was founded on Feb. 9, 1983 on the approval of Batas Pambansa No. 336 by former President Ferdinand Marcos.

The town is named after the late Vice Governor Salvador Benedicto who played an important role in setting up a revolutionary government of Negros Island in Barangay Igmaya-an during the World War II Japanese occupation.

Its people have adopted the art of “Kali.” otherwise known as “arnis” or “escrima,” as their cultural heritage. The craft is highlighted every year during the celebration of the “Kali Kalihan” Festival in November that also showcases various cultural and traditional activities of the people.

The 17,056-has. Don Salvador Benedicto is a haven for nature lovers, who can go horse back and carabao cart riding, hiking, biking, and even mountaineering, or simply just bring picnic lunches and take in the wonders of nature.

DSB, the youngest town Negros Occidental, also produces high value vegetables, fruits and flowers.

And its climate is neither windy, nor too cold with even rainfall distribution. The coldest temperature is 12-16 degrees Celsius in the months of December to February and 18-27 degrees Celsius from March to May, Dela Cruz said.

“We can now tell investors that they can come to DSB as the local government has modified its zoning because there are many people who would like to buy land there,” he said.

“But we try to see to it that investments are environmentally sound,” he said.

Dela Cruz said the Negros Occidental Sangguniang Panlalawigan has held two public hearings on the proposal to make DSB a summer capital, he said.

The advantage of its being declared the summer capital of Negros Occidental is that the provincial and national governments will focus on developing tourism in the area and it would boost the livelihood of its residents, he said.*CPG

Here are my own Top Bacolod Hotels list based on my personal experience.

Palmas del Mar Resort and Hotel:

This place is a paradise...its like having a 5star experience without paying much. :) they treat their guests equally, may it either be foreign or local guests.

Sylvia Manor:

I love the staff, they are like friends to me. Here, i can get a 2 breakfast buffet coupons instead of 1 :) Great food choices for their ala carte and line-up for their buffet. hehehehehe the rooms are all non-smoking (though i'm a smoker) so i dont have to worry about my clothes smelling like ashtray.

Planta Centro Bacolod and Residences:

I love the rooms, they are better than SMH but what i dont like is that one of the front desk clerk is "PANGET" and doesnt know how to greet their guests with a smle..in short- ga kusmod!!!! (which i really hate!!!) I like their poolside and also their food.:)

SUGARLAND Hotel:

I love their new lobby....their twist resto is also good. I hope they will renovate the rooms now coz it doesnt look nice na.....the staffs are friendly but not as friendly as SMH. :)

Business Inn:

This hotel is comparable to O hotel, their only edge are the rooms :) they are much better, food is also good. I love the location...you can reach your destination fast :)

O Hotel:

wonderful renovation, nice food and FD clerks...highly commendable ang ila guards hehehehe i just hope they can put a swimming pool at the back...they stii got a HUGE space their. :) i just pity the rooms but fortunately...they are now renovating some of it :)

Kundutel:

They have nice rooms as well and good lobby, rooms are a bit small but ok. but the location is nice...havent tried the food though thats why i can comment about it hehehehe :)

Royale Am Rei:

Friendly staff, food is simple, nice rooms but it calls for an immediate renovation :) hehehehehe i love the lobby and the interior design of this hotel.

Circle Inn Hotel:

Spacious rooms, the interior isnt that amazing. good thing their staffs are ok. the food is not that special....thats why if you can just go out and grab something to eat in a restaurant, do it...i dont encourage you to eat there. hehehehehe

Lfisher is not on the list since this one is having its renovation right now, but if i'm going to include it. Its still number 1.

Silay: Heritage, Kitchen City of Negros

By Luci Lizarez

MY HOMETOWN city, Talisay, is known as the bedroom city of Negros because of the unstoppable mushrooming of subdivisions.

If Talisay is the bedroom city, then proximal Silay, according to Sally Ledesma, should be dubbed as the kitchen city of Negros with all the delicacies that practically saw its birth in this elegant ancestral city in the North.

The day of our supposedly mentoring the tour guides of Silay ended not only as a familiarization tour but an eating binge as well. Starting with breakfast sumptuously prepared by Lyn Gamboa, tourism and cultural consultant to Mayor Oti Montelibano, and assisted by Maida Jison, we enjoyed true Ilongo "pamahaw." Then we set out to what we were in Silay for and that was to observe and comment as Girlie did a running tour of the city.

Apparently, there are 31 ancestral homes in Silay and most of them are recognized by the National Commission of Culture and the Arts (NCCA). Since it was a Monday, we were unable to enter all homes but marveled at the stories that went with each home. Locsins, Ledesmas, Gastons, Gamboas, Jalandonis, Jisons and many more old rich family homes stand side by side, row after row.

What is charming about Silay is that in this day of "care I less" and "mind your own business," there still exists in Silay the neighborhood kinship. Friends and families knock on each other's door to say hello or to visit tito and tita, lolo and lola without benefit of a written invitation and still be warmly welcomed with a cake or pastry or whatever is fresh in the oven served to the guest!

As I said...the kitchen city of Negros. I truly miss the women and men who would go around Bacolod with that "bilao" of goodies balanced in the heads. But with the advance of commercialism and better facilities and amenities, these goodies now find their home and readily available in most food and pasalubong outlets.

We visited Mariel's and their Cookies Melt was absolutely kanamiton! We even entered their kitchen to see their operations. They had other delicacies that were practically wiped out by the time we left their establishment.

We were not content on merely looking at these ancestral homes so we requested Lyn if we could have a "look see" at one of the homes. We visited the home of Vicente Conlu Montelibano, who married Teodora Locsin. Sole heir to the home is Louie Garcia, son of Luis and Lourdes Garcia, who is also the heir of his childless aunt and uncle Teresita Gamboa and Benjamin Esquerra Estacio. The house is very well preserved. I love the pieces of furniture that breathes of the life of over a century ago.

The "Pink House" of Bernardino Jalandoni has most of its pieces truly authentically original. There are carriages and many furnishings that are very rare and the ones you can find in most curio stores and antique shops now are mere reproductions. Ramon Hofileña has the longest running cultural tour in the province. He does this every December to a bus load of tourists both local and international. His home is also filled with antiques and precious paintings by famed and national artists.

After circling the heritage homes, we dropped by El Ideal, with its ancestral edifice and home of ancestral recipes too. El Ideal being a hub of many travelers has finally air-conditioned its premises. My all time favorite in El Ideal is their Pasensya. But it is been most popular for its many pies and cookies as well.

Before we knew it, it was again time to go back to the Balay Negrense for lunch which was being hosted by the Mayor. We binged ourselves to gluttony. Sorry gid Lord!

To top that, Tess Golez, mom of Vice Mayor Mark, invited us to 1925, a quaint restaurant owned by Denise Gaston where we had heavy dessert like chorros con chocolate (daw indi man na dessert?) plus cakes and pastries. Denise has fabulous entries and meals in her menu and she serves breakfast to dinner. A must stop over in Silay!

By the time we went home, we had a total overload of beauties of antiquities, a wealth of Silay information and our tummies having truly a bursting with yummy blessings!

Then we set out to what we were in Silay for and that was to observe and comment as Girlie did a running tour of the city.

Don Salvador Benedicto, the town founded by 1st District Board Member Nehemias “Nene” dela Cruz is now the official Summer Capital of the province of Negros Occidental after it gained the approval of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan in its regular session yesterday.

Dela Cruz authored the said Ordinance which declared his beloved hometown as the summer capital of the province.

The approval of this bill will pave the way to more tourism developments, being its priority program. Incumbent mayor of DSB is Mayor Marxlen dela Cruz, son of two former mayors Nene de la Cruz and Cynthia de la Cruz.

It has committed to develop infrastructures like banking, trade, commerce, tourist accommodations and a government center for the Provincial Governor and the Sangguniang Panlalawigan.

DSB has proven itself worthy of being declared as the Summer Capital of the province.

The primary purpose of the declaration is the promotion of tourism in the town and the whole province of Negros Occidental in general.

The town is known for its cool and temperate climate all year round, the coldest being 12 oC to 16 oC in December to February and 18 oC to 27oC, which is suitable for family and group activities.

Its main attributes include the existence of flora and fauna which are unique to the place and investors have shown interest thereon.

The town is surrounded by mountainous terrain outlined by a well maintained zigzag highway which provides an abundant view of its gorges, hills, ravines, rivers and waterfalls.

DSB is also an ideal location for tourism development being accessible from all geographical directions and connected by an extensive, well maintained network of national highways to Sagay City in the north, Canlaon City in the south, San Carlos City in the east and Bacolod City to the west. Its close proximity to Bacolod City, seaports of the said city and San Carlos City and Bacolod-Silay airport makes tourism development ideal in the town of DSB.*

Pacete: Silay 52nd Charter Anniversary

IN 1951, Dr. Jose Corteza Locsin won a seat in the Senate and in 1955 Romulo Golez became the mayor of Silay. In that same year, Jose Puey of Sagay and Carlos Hilado of Bacolod also won seats in the House of Representatives.

The two congressmen with the help of Mayor Golez and Sen. Locsin worked for the passage of House Bill 6096 which became Republic Act 1621, otherwise known as the Charter of Silay City. The day of the Charter’s approval was June 12, 1957. Silay was the second town in Negros Occidental to become a city.

Mayor Jose L. Montelibano, Vice Mayor Mark Golez, the other city officials and the residents of Silay in coordination with Hugyaw Silay Inc. (the NGO recognized by the City Council to assist the City Government in fiesta activities) are inviting Negrenses and friends to join in a festive atmosphere of celebrating the charter anniversary (June 6–12).

There will be a motorcade featuring the 15 lin–ay candidates on June 6. Mayor Oti will officially declare the opening of the celebration and “Kinaon arroz a la Valenciana” at the plaza will follow (around 9 a.m.). This is sponsored by the Liga ng mga Barangay with the special participation of Silay Market Vendors’ Association. Visitors and friends are invited to pick their choice.

Other attractions at the opening day include “Pandot – Saot” (6 p.m.), a repertoire of Philippine dances showcasing Maria Clara suit, ethnic and rural dances. This is produced by Marissa Montelibano, choreographed and directed by Lydia Paz Umali. The show will place on center stage the world – renowned Kabataang Silay Rondalla and Hugyaw Silay Dance Group.

Colorful events are motorcycle parade, badminton tournament, employees’ variety show and band concert at the Food Court. Sunday’s Big Event (June 7) is action and wit day. Focus will be on taekwondo tournament, volleyball championship games, motor show and sound – off in front of Balay Negrense. Not to be discounted is the Battle of the Bands.

Monday (June 8) is Bakbakan Day with the best pugilists seeing action at the covered court. Teenagers will flock at the evening’s Pop Idol Competition back to back with the Black Velvet Show. Food court area will sell the best gustatory delights and the amusement park will tickle the children with fun and adventure.

Educators will have their day on June 9. Drum Corps Exhibition will be at 2 p.m. followed by the special chorale presentation of the College of Immaculate Concepcion. The star of the night is the musical extravaganza of the Department of Education. This is a collective effort of the pupils, students and teachers.

Wednesday (June 10) is for all Silaynons to witness a colorful pageant participated in by the fifteen lovely lin–ay candidates who will give their best performance at Natalio G. Velez Sports and Cultural Center (7 p.m.). Viewers will have their share of suspense during the presentation of festival gown, swim suit, evening gown, and there are challenging questions waiting to those vying for the title “Lin – ay sang Silay 2009.” Added attractions at the plaza are volleyball invitational games and pop dance showdown.

The “vespertina” on Thursday, June 11, is sponsored by the Liga ng mga Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan. It’s show time for ballroom dancing and street party with two popular bands assisting. San Miguel drinks will quench the thirst. Head bangers will roll their heads until morning.

And the D - Day, June 12! The homebodies will be awakened by road runners joining the Hinugyaw ancestral homes 15K – run. The runners, instead of plowing the highway, will make detours in avenues where the ancestral houses of Silay are. Of course, the highest event is the Thanksgiving Mass at San Diego Pro – Cathedral. Silaynons will thank the Lord for the past and present favors.

The motor riders have also their way of roaring. They will have off – road fun ride to Patag. And the grand parade will take off at 8 a.m. from Freedom Boulevard. This is the show of shows where everybody is a participant - in colorful attire, kaleidoscopic floats and sparkling banners. The city officials will acknowledge the participants while passing the viewing stand.

Charter Day Program will be at the covered court (9 a.m.). The Liga ng mga Barangay officials of Makati City are program guests. (Makati is the sister city of Silay.) Hugyaw Kansilay street dance will be at 2 p.m. This is a street dance – drama on love, success, prosperity, thanksgiving and vision of the days to come.

Winners will receive their trophies, certificates of recognition and cash rewards later. The early part of the evening will be colored by fireworks, the traditional battleship fight and the futuristic star wars in heaven. Don’t miss the sky at 8 p.m. The night will not fall without the celebrities from television and movie world. Silaynons will see them live!

Just like cockfighting (June 6–14 at Barangay IV), Silay fiesta is very domestic. It has its own share of performers but also looks forward to see what others can share. We do not forget God because He choreographs our events, hearts and minds. Thank you, Lord.

Don Salvador Benedicto: Summer capital of Negros Occidental

WITH a cool weather all year round and foggy air enveloping the chocolate hills of upland Don Salvador Benedicto, there is no reason for endemic species, flora and fauna, mist-frozen grown fruits and vegetables not to captivate the eyes of every visitor.

This aside from the rows and curves of panoramic rice terraces that majestically carved the hugely fertile terrains plus the green-lush hectarage of pineapple plantations obviously carpeting the virgin soil of the town, bringing not just eye-grabbing attraction but economic bliss to the town, especially the farmers.

Towering falls cascade down the hill, and to their deepest, overflow in the town’s vast and fertile agricultural lands abundantly sprawling with naturally grown endemic species of flora and fauna.

Somewhere in Barangay Kumaliskis, just a 10-minute ride trip from the town proper, the 120-foot Malatan-og Falls or the Cigarette Falls seduce every riding traveler, especially those who do not have the chance to drop by, but still have the chance to see it, over the bus window.

For those who are on a day tour, a viewing deck has been established by the local government purposely to cater to every tourist to watch the overflowing falls of Malatan-og.

At least 27 kilometers farther from the town’s boundary in the north, one must have the spine-tingling experience until he could finally reach the Alindahawan Falls in Barangay Bago. One must have the nerve and endurance for an 800-meter walk or 30-minute strides down to get to the falls where its basin is enough to gratify about 300 summer campers for a cool dip in the pristine waters of the waterfalls.

It is enlivening, too, to see mushrooming vacation houses such as tourists lodge surrounded by greeneries of all sorts. More tourist lodges are being eyed to be erected because foreign investors liked not only the sceneries but the peace and order, making the town generally conducive for business. The people of Don Salvador Benedicto owe it all to the De la Cruzes; for if not for them, especially to couple Nehemias ‘Nene’ and Cynthia who fought political crisis and rebellion in southern Negros Occidental, the town may not be what it is today.

Nene, now board member of the Negros Occidental Provincial Board (PB), authored a resolution declaring the town as the summer capital of the province, which was unanimously approved last month.

Nene said that another attraction, if it would be materialized, is a medical university to be built in the town by tycoon Washington Sycip because of the climate and area which is ideal for a university atmosphere.

The tycoon is the founder of the Asian Institute of Management and Sycip Gorres Velayo and Co., who had been to the town twice already.

Nene said that if the Sycip project pushes through, it will be managed by the Stanford University, which he hopes will be the best in Asia.

With the PB declaration of the town as the summer capital of Negros Occidental, Mayor Marxlen vowed to develop it as a major tourist attraction, adding he already drawn a five-year development plan.

A blueprint to protect the environment and to ensure that the town does not lose its natural beauty has already been drafted, the mayor stressed. “We also want to create activities for tourists that are environment-friendly and leave zero carbon footprints.”

DSB is locally known as the “Little Baguio” of Negros Occidental because of its cool climate. It is around 47 kilometers from Bacolod City along the well-maintained zigzag and intestine-like Negros Translink Ecotourism Highway.

Other features the town offers aside from the magnificent waterfalls and awesome hills are the stone house, Villa Ica Garden, Kape Musang, and a mayor’s garden of vibrant flowers, among other landmarks.

Located in central Negros Occidental, DSB, whose local government belongs to the first district, is categorized as a fifth class municipality and partly-urban, composed of barangays Bago-Lalong, Bagong Silang-Marcelo, Bunga, Igmaya-an, Kumaliskis, Pandanon and Pinowayan-Prosperidad.

Travelers can reach the town one hour and 30 minutes via the Bacolod Murcia-Pandanon-Don Salvador road network aboard a private car, bus or van-for-hire. (GMD)

Talisay Ruins on list
of 12 most fascinating
BY CARLA GOMEZ

The Ruins in Talisay City, Negros Occidental, is among “12 of the World's Most Fascinating Ruins” featured under places on Oddee.

Oddee at www.oddee.com is a blog with over 2.5 million visitors worldwide a month that “features the odd, strange and bizarre things of our world, Be amazed!”, its home page says.
Ruins
The Ruins in Talisay City*

The Ruins in Talisay is ranked in 12th place and is described as “a mansion built by a sugar magnate at the turn of the last century that not once, but twice, was destroyed in the Second World War in order to prevent Japanese forces from using it. Once on their way out of the Philippines, the USAAFE bombed and strafed the home, and Philippines rebels burned it down to keep it from falling into Japanese hands.”

The Ruins, built in the early 1990s by sugar planter Mariano Ledesma Lacson (1865-1948), is now a tourists attraction ran by his great grandson Raymund Javellana, who runs the place.

Javellana told the DAILY STAR yesterday he does not know how The Ruins got included in Oddee or who runs the blog but he is grateful for the publicity it is giving the place.

“I just hope that this can spur tourist arrivals to Negros,” he said.

During the early part of the war, Filipino guerrillas from the United States Armed Forces in the Far East set fire to the mansion to prevent the Japanese forces from utilizing it as their headquarters, he said.

But he denied that the USAAFE also bombed and strafed the home as stated on Oddee.

Topping the Oddee list of fascinating ruins at http://www.oddee.com/item_96671.aspx is the most famous of all the Inca ruins built in the mid 15th century, Machu Picchu, which appears to be suspended between two mountains and is often enshrouded in mist.

In second place is Babylon in Iraq, followed by Palenque in Mexico, the ruins of Ayutthaya in Thailand, the Colosseum in Italy, the Tikal Ruins in Guatemala, Chichén Itzá Ruin in Mexico, the Parthenon in Greece, Jesuitical Ruins of Trinidad in Paraguay, the Copan Ruins in Honduras, and the Palmyra Ruins in Syria.*CPG

‘Paris de Negros’
‘Oti Vows to Make Silay City of Lights Again’ - Mrs. Montelibano
By Gil Alfredo B. Severino

Mrs. Marissa Montelibano, wife of Silay City Mayor Jose “Oti” Montelibano, stressed last Saturday that Oti ran for Public office with the vision to restore Silay’s legacy of being the “Paris” of Negros long been forgotten by its people.

With much hesitation, Mrs. Montelibano answered an NDB interview after the Valenciana Party which was part of Silay’s 52nd Charter Anniversary Celebration at the Silay Public Plaza, that Silay’s masterplan meticulously formulated by Mayor Oti will definitely not disturb the remaining historical and structural legacies of the 19th Century Negrense within the City proper.

“The New Silay” will be constructed outside of this “lowland poblacion” but Mrs. Montelibano will not reveal details in keeping with Mayor Oti’s attitude not to flaunt projects which has not been completed yet.

Mrs. Montelibano was at liberty, however, that these historical and structural legacies will be preserved through history, its first tranche is now ready for publication, and efforts are now being built up by Mayor Oti to preserve, protect and showcase Silay to the whole world as the “seat of intellectual distinction, revolutionary fervor and aesthetic advancement.”

Solomon Locsin, a Silay Tourism Office historical researcher, explained that while the words “Paris of Negros” may have a “can-can” connotation as written by Jose Rizal in Noli Me Tangere, he added, because of the greatness of France, writers of Paris historically and prominently used a byword “La Ville-Lumihre” literally “The Light City” but the English language translated it as “The City of Lights.”

Locsin, however, opined that Silay as the “Paris of Negros” is more of its advance and holistic development in the 19th century.

He would rather accrue the name “Paris” to its prominence as a centre of education and ideas and referred to the French Revolution as the watershed of liberalism.

Silay as the seat of the revolution against Spain and the anti-Americanism stand of the Governor Melecio Severino is unprecedented throughout the province, if not for the whole archipelago, thereby giving substance to the semantic “Paris of Negros or Silay as the City of Lights,” Locsin explained.

It is a fact of the Negros history that the bravery of the Silay “enlightened class” (ilustrados) is very distinct both in intelligence and actual military encounter.

Meanwhile, Mrs. Montelibano underlined the uniqueness of Silay by its upliftment of women status.

She cited the legend of Cansilay which was a woman heroism, the Silay Public Plaza was originally named Plaza Olympia Severino and a bill authored by a Silaynon Melecio Severino in granting Filipino women suffrage ranked ahead of and despite the presence of a women-hostile America in the Philippines.

It is the essence of all these that Mrs. Montelibano revived the Silay Rondalla to where it is now, the Lin-ay sg Silay contestants are intellectually and thoroughly oriented along these lines and a dance troupe had already been institutionalized to showcase the history of Silay.*

Silay City’s 52nd Charter Day a success

By Jerson O. Coronica

SILAY City’s 52nd Charter Day anniversary was a huge success for both the local government unit dubbed as “Paris of Negros” and its people, with thousands joining the grand parade Friday.

Silaynons and visitors flocked to the city’s Rizal highway Friday morning to join the parade that brought colors to the celebrations; with hundreds of both public and private agencies throwing bags of candies to spectators.

Silay City Mayor Jose Montelibano thanked all those who lent support in making this year’s Charter Day a big success.

Vice Mayor Mark Golez also led the City Council members in the parade, throwing candies to children and spectators.

Several big events were also held as part of the celebration, including an off-road fun ride, drum corps exhibition, live bands at the city plaza, sports activities such as marathon, badminton, volleyball and many more.

A celebrity night was also held successfully Friday night despite the sudden downpour. ABS-CBN’s standup comedian and Wowowee co-host Pokwang brought fun to the crowd with her funny tricks on stage together with Chad Peralta and Jen Ramos.

“I am so proud of seeing how far Silay had gotten and for the long years, we were able to preserve the history and culture of this great city and that is what we are proud of,” said Montelibano.

Silay is considered the "cultural and intellectual hub of Negros" due to the residents' love for knowledge and works of art, and the collection of heritage mansions built during the height of the Philippine sugar industry's success, of which Negros was the center.

Most notable among these houses is Balay Negrense, the mansion of the son of the first Negrense sugar baron, Yves Leopold Germain Gaston.

Silay became a chartered city on June 12, 1957 by virtue of Republic Act 1621. On June 7, 2003, Silay became the first local government unit in the Philippines to hold a referendum through a people's initiative approving the 2003 annual executive budget.

In Saturday, Silay is listed by the Department of Tourism as one of its 25 tourist destinations in the Philippines. It is also considered the seat of arts, culture and ecotourism in Western Visayas.

LA VIDA NEGRENSE

A street party and fashion show was staged at 6th Street by Offprice store, right at the heart of the new tourism center of Bacolod.

A huge stage and ramp were set at the middle of the busy thoroughfare, while round tables for the VIP guests lined up the street which was closed to traffic. Negrenses watched gorgeous models from the Bacolod Association of Models strut the ramp, wearing the latest and trendiest signature collection of clothes, shoes and accessories. These signature brands were all imported direct from the factories sold at a much lower price. Firedancers displayed their skills in playing with balls of fire, while a live band kept everyone in a party mood. Entrepreneurs and franchisees Ronaldo and Dr. Arlene Tan welcomed the guests that evening. Jetting in for the occasion were Alex Enriquez, Leslie Ann Alberto and Cecile Beco from their main branch in Manila.

Bago To Mark 434th Foundation Day

Bago residents will celebrate not only the Feast of St. John the Baptist, the patron saint of the city, but also its 434th Foundation Day.

Highlighting the commemoration, a joint initiative of the local government, under Mayor Ramon Torres and Vice Mayor Nicholas Yulo, and the local churches, particularly the Catholic and Aglipayan churches, are masses, an inter-barangay fluvial parade-competition and sports tournaments, including boxing, which has placed Bago City in the world map.

Rosseni Mina, Bago City tourism officer, said the city celebration will take off tomorrow – with the three-day Tiangge sa Bantayan, or Market, Market activity featuring the sale of various items and goods — and culminate on Wednesday. The ‘tiangge’ will bring goods sold at Gaisano Supermall to Bago City.

Bishop Vicente Navarra will officiate the concelebrated mass at the St. John the Baptist Parish Church on June 24 at 7 a.m. while Rev. Fr. Romulo Biangco will lead the commemorative rites as the Philippine Independent Church at 6 a.m.

The masses will be followed by the procession of the statues of John the Baptist of both churches to Bantayan Park at Purok Sunflower, Barangay Poblacion which will serve as the heart of the celebration.

The Biray sa Bantayan fluvial procession will be participated in by all 24 barangays of the city with their entries adorned with buntings, flaglets and other decors depicting their native cultural fare, the tourism officer said.

Sports events which will be held on Wednesday morning include the ladies’ beach volleyball tournament dubbed Hanot sa Bantayan with participants from Dumaguete, Bacolod and Iloilo, mountain bike trekking, jet ski and sand sculpture competitions.

The sand sculpture and mountain bike trek contests are open to elementary and high school students while the jet ski schedule is an invitational competition, Mina added.

The afternoon calendar includes the beach volleyball championship, the inter-barangay boxing tournament, Lu-sok, a cockfighting activity, and the procession of the St. John the Baptist image back to their respective churches.

Bago City has produced boxing Olympic medalists – brothers Roel and Mansueto Velasco – as well as Asian Games and Southeast Asian Games champions.

Tomorrow, Purok Sunflower will hold its basketball and dance sports tournaments as well as singing and macho gay competitions.

Public dances will cap the Monday and Tuesday activities, Mina further said.

Resto chain to expand nationwide
Updated June 23, 2009 12:00 AM

CEBU, Philippines – As its unique concept starts to get more popular, Mexican-themed restaurant chain Mooon Café is now looking at aggressively expanding nationwide this year through franchising.

In an interview with Pages Holdings Incorporated chairman and chief executive officer Bunny Pages, he said that their company which now owns and manages Mooon Café is planning to open more branches in different areas outside Cebu.

He said that they are now in talks with interested investors from Cagayan de Oro, Dumaguete, Bacolod, Manila, Davao and in Mactan.

“Mooon Café is getting to be really popular because of its unique combination of good food, reasonable pricing and its ambiance so we have decided to franchise it all over the country,” said Pages.

Right now, Mooon Café has three company-owned branches located in Guadalupe, The Walk at the Asiatown IT Park and in the Terraces at the Ayala Center Cebu.

Pages said that since a restaurant venture needs hands-on supervision from owners, the only way for them to grow Mooon Café without sacrificing its quality and service is through franchising.

“It is not easy to manage restaurants that are far so all Mooon Café branches that are outside Cebu will all be franchised so that franchisees can be hands-on in managing the business,” said Pages.

Pages said that handling restaurant business is very “demanding and meticulous” and it needs personal supervision.

“It is great to franchise because you share your business with others as well as you translate your success to more entrepreneurs. It will not be easy for you to handle everything. A dip in your service and food quality can create a big impact to your business so we decided to go to franchising because we know franchisees will personally manage the business because they have invested money in it,” he said.

Mooon Café was bought by Pages Holdings in 2007 and it opened its branch in Guadalupe last June of that same year followed by The Walk in 2008 and The Terraces branch in December of last year.

Pages said that before the end of July, they will soon be opening their fourth company-owned branch at Parkmall in Mandaue City and another one near the Chong Hua Hospital this coming September.

Two months ago, the company contracted RK Franchising to put in place Mooon Café’s franchising system and after completing this, they are now preparing to open their first franchised outlet in Cagayan de Oro.

Pages said that in general the food industry in Cebu continues to be a bankable sector for new investments because it has been growing to cater to a very competitive market.

And he stressed that despite the present impacts of the economic crunch and the growing industry, Mooon Café continues to be a competitive player because they provide a combination of good food, quality service and unique customer experience.

“The Cebuano market is very choosy but if it finds something that they like they tend to support them and they keep on coming back. There are always challenges but we make sure that we provide our customers with a unique experience that will make them keep on coming back through our food, pricing and service,” said Pages. — Rhia de Pablo

Would just like to add my experiences of staying in hotels in Bacolod. We were last there back in february of this year. We first stayed at the Westown, I thought the rooms were very nice, nicely furnished (new) spacious rooms, nice staff, good location.. the major downside though is that there is a bar/club next door, from our suite we could hear the bass from the sound system..a real shame :(

After that we transferred to the Sylvia Manor, rooms were decent..smaller and more dated but still nice.. staff were very friendly and the service was excellent..good value for money, had a dicount, under 2k per night including breakfast for 2.. great location near SM.

The year before we stayed at Palmas Del Mar, I thought its a nice resort but a bit pricey for the rooms and the location is not so good for me personally, I prefer to be more centrally located when in a city.

Pancake House steps up expansion with P150-million capex budget this year
By Zinnia B. Dela Peña Updated July 01, 2009 12:00 AM

MANILA, Philippines - Lorenzo-owned casual dining restaurant chain owner Pancake House Inc. is ramping up its store expansion with total investment outlay pegged at P150 million this year as part of a strategy to spur sales and build a solid platform for growth.

On the sidelines of the company’s annual shareholders’ meeting yesterday, Pancake House chairman Martin Lorenzo said they are looking to build 25 new stores in and outside Metro Manila as well as refurbish five to seven existing branches.

Lorenzo said a large chunk of the capital budget at P100 million will go to the construction of new stores, while P30 million to P40 million will be used for the upgrading of its commissary. The balance of P10 million will be channeled to head office operations.

Pancake House is actively securing locations not only in Metro Manila, where 80 percent of its outlets are located, but also in other key cities and provinces in the country which include Bulacan, Baguio, Subic,Bacolod, Naga, Laguna, Cagayan de Oro and Cebu.

“We’re working out something that will allow us to establish stores in small hotels to be built across the country. Our goal is really to expand aggressively to the provinces where tourism is booming,” Lorenzo said.

This year’s capital budget, which will be sourced from internally-generated cash, is 50 percent higher than the P100 million spent in 2008.

The group is hoping to end the year with a total of five stores overseas. It currently has a presence in Malaysia and plans are afoot to set up shop in Thailand and Vietnam.

As of end-March 2009, the group has 160 outlets — Pancake House (77), dencio’s (24), Teriyaki Boy (34), Sizzlin Pepper Steak (9), Singkit (3), Le Coeur de France (13).

Also on the drawing board is a plan to set up a culinary school, slated to be operational in January next year. It will have 220 to 250 students and will offer three months to one-year culinary courses.

Lorenzo noted that second quarter sales have improved after a sluggish first three months and is hoping to sustain this growth as consumer spending is expected to pick up in the second half of the year.

This year, the group is looking to serve a total of 13.5 million meals compared with only 12 million in 2008. Pancake House recently penetrated untapped markets with new brands such as Singkit, its Chinese take-out and delivery service, and Sizzlin Pepper Steak.

The group reported a net profit of P10.46 million in the first quarter this year, 25 percent lower than the P13.95 million recorded the same period a year earlier as consolidated revenues fell 4.7 percent to P436.62. From 80 outlets as of December 2008, Pancake House, which is known to serve specialty pancakes and waffles, is committed to expand to 89 by the end of the year. It also plans to continue refurbishing existing stores, for both kitchen and dining space.

Dencio’s, which specializes in Filipino grilled menu items, plans to add nine new branches to bring its total store network to 35 within the next two years. It recently launched Kabisera, a higher-end, Filipino casual dining concept to serve the more discriminating market.

The group’s Japanese restaurant chain, Teriyaki Boy, plans to further grow its business with the addition of four new stores this year. From only 10 at the time of acquisition in late 2005, Teriyaki Boy is expected to end the year with 42 outlets.

i agree with you about westpoint hotel...though i havent tried staying in that hotel, i heard a lot that its quite noisy. You can really hear the sound of MO2 ice. with regards to Palmas del Mar, I think their hotel rates is reasonable enough... coz along with that price, you'll have the privilege to bring along 2-4 guests with you. Its a good location for people to relax and unwind. Away from the city life and noise of a bustling metropolis. But for someone whose a city person, someone who wants to stay within the city...then Palmas is not a place to be :)
