When was this jail/fort constructed? I think this is a heritage site of the Negrense people.

There are a number of people in Negros who still speaks Spanish. I hope I would still hear Spanish speakers still in the future. :)

Let’s develop old airport

There is one project I hope Doc Golez will start to look into. SM and AyalaLand are fighting over the purchase and lease of the Capitol property.

And lately, Robinsons showed interest to develop the Paglaum property.

I hope Doc Golez who has the capacity for hard work, considers the sale or lease of 20 hectares of the old Bacolod airport. Lucio Tan owns another 17 hectares. Or a total of 37 hectares.

Together with Lucio Tan, Doc Golez in tandem with Mayor Bing Leonardia can find means to develop the old airport into a big economic hub. Investors there are plenty.

***

We will get as many interested investors who will not be a problem later. Investors, because of their money, have a way of pushing around LGU officials.

We should follow the firmness of Gov. Freddie Marañon. I don’t want investors to make errand boys of our officials.

But the secret is we must have honest officials. This is the attitude of investors only if they think they can bribe officials.

They even have a way of making media toe their line. They can do this to media outlets afraid to lose their advertisements.

I recall then President Joseph Estrada wanted to bend The Inquirer to his wishes because of the paper’s uncompromising stand against corruption. Estrada failed. Inquirer stood its ground because when other advertisers saw Inquirer was being pressured, they came to the aid of The Inquirer.

Guys, watcha tink? Poor people ta kuno ay hahaha

Rich province, poor people

A deal with Ayala Land is not always the better choice.

Officials of the provincial government of Negros Occidental should keep this in mind in the midst of the controversy in the bidding for the 7.7-hectare provincial property in Bacolod City where SM Prime Holdings Inc. submitted a clearly superior bid for the sale/lease of the property.

Ayala Land, which submitted an inferior bid, was awarded the property through negotiations after the bidding was declared a failure on a technicality.

The award to Ayala, however, is still pending because of the issuance by the Court of Appeals of a temporary restraining order.

Negros Occidental Governor Alfredo Maranon could find the restraining order providential. It might have given him the time to review if the deal with Ayala Land is indeed the better deal compared to the winning bid of SM which the provincial bids and awards committee had decided to set aside.

Maranon might wish to ask the Bases Conversion Development Authority what their experience was with Ayala Land in the lease of the BCDA property which is the site of the Market, Market commercial complex developed by Ayala Land.

Negros Occidental province officials might be surprised to find out that the financial projections made by Ayala Land, which was one of the basis why the property was awarded to Ayala Land over another unsolicited offer by a Hong Kong based developer, did not materialize. BCDA is thus not getting the income that was promised and was expected.

The Hong Kong developer which wanted to put up a commercial development in the property anchored by a hotel-casino was endorsed by former Sen. Ernesto “Boy” Herrera to BCDA.

The Hong Kong developer also made a good offer but Ayala Land was chosen because of its reputation and the expectation that its financial projections of BCDA income, in addition to the lease commitment, would be realized.

Alas, only a fraction of the additional income for BCDA has materialized. In fact, Ayala Land is even asking BCDA to agree to a reduction of its lease com mitments because SM is developing a nearby property of Taguig City. There will be stiff competition.

The province of Negros Occidental could use some lessons on what happened to BCDA in leasing its property to Ayala Land.

Actually, the City of Taguig is bathing in tax returns from the Ayala Investment sa ina nga lugar. BCDA has another function than that of the province so they are different. You cannot compare apples with oranges. Whatever the tsismis he got there, it is overlooking the fact that Taguig is now a prosperous city primarily because of the Ayala investment.

Actually, its a prison for all sorts of criminals then. I do understand your point since Fort San Juan now looks horrendous drenched in all sorts of piss and crap.

I apologize, but I guess being classic isn't being boring. Mas juicy pa gani kontrobersya sang mga daan nga tawo, especially when it comes to prominent people and families.

Anyway, lets just agree to disagree when it comes to this.

Personally I would like to preserve this carcel due to its historical significance. There are prisons around the world that still being maintained, like Alcatraz or even Fort Santiago. But since it doesn't have a historical marker and the provincial government is not keen in preserving it, looks like it'll be gone.

Guv - NFA to transfer, old jail site up for lease
Carla Gomez | Visayan Daily Star (http://www.visayandailystar.com/2011/August/05/topstory4.htm)

Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. yesterday said the provincial government will lease out the site of the now defunct Negros Occidental Provincial Jail at Gatuslao Street in Bacolod City soon, while the National Food Authority has agreed to vacate the adjacent area.

Marañon said the owners of 888 Chinatown Square are interested in leasing the about 1.1 hectare jail site, but the provincial government will call on a all interested parties to join a bidding for its lease.

The historical marker at the façade of the old jail will be preserved, the governor assured.

The NFA, on the other hand, has agreed to vacate its current site owned by the provincial government at Gatuslao Street. The NFA will move to Tabunan, Bago, where the provincial government will construct its new building to bring it closer to the rice farmers whom it serves, the governor said.

The Negros Occidental Sanggunian has set the minimum lease price of provincial government prime property at P60 per square meter a month, Board Member Salvador Escalante said.

Meanwhile, Escalante said the Negros Occidental Sanggunian Wednesday approved the request of Marañon to partially reorganize the Office of the Governor, specifically with the impending abolition of the Provincial Jail Management Division (PJMD), with the turnover of the provincial jail management to the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology.

Inmates of the Negros Occidental Provincial Jail were recently transferred to the Negros Occidental District Jail in Bago City, which is now being managed by the BJMP.

Twenty-eight provincial guards will be augmenting BJMP personnel at the new jail during the two-year transition period.
The governor asked the SP for the immediate abolition of 56 provincial jail positions, including 12 unfilled positions effective August 31, and the total abolition of the PJMD after two years.

He also asked that the 44 displaced provincial jail personnel to be properly compensated with one and half month’s salary for every year of service as separation benefit totaling P24.4 million.

The governor also asked that the same benefit be given to the 28 retained prison guards when they are separated from the service in two years.*CPG

good move,,,galing basi eskeleton terminal naman ang iya sang bacolod...ang iya ni yanson basi another world class ceres south terminal naman ...ti sa old old south terminal anu naman nada ayhan ang mabangon nga kanding nga may bangs???

For me The South Terminal should not be in Sum-ag because its so far away and it will compromise the riding public. Remember ang sitwasyon sa North is completely different from the South. South Bacolod is much more farther from the city proper so I suggest that the South Terminal should be right around the Tangub-Pahanocoy border...maybe that wide area in front of Gardenville before you reach bangga Pahanocoy. That could spur up more of the southern part of Bacolod to be an economic nucleus.

¿Cuando este carcel/fuerza fundido/construido? Creo, esto es un sitio del patrimonio de los negrenses.
When was this jail/fort constructed? I think this is a heritage site of the Negrense people.

1890's I think by the order of Fr.Mauricio Fererro....built by the hands of the criminals at that time from the old jail just beside the public plaza

so amigo they will change the name of the street into Ayala ave...? well according to my source, ang hotel may name gid....

No roads or streets will be changed as far as I heard

Abi ko ara ko sa LatinAmerica Thread... Bacolod City pa man gale ah.. I watched Tv patrol Zamboanga once and I was amazed how well preserved the Spanish Language in their dialect(Chavacano).

Ha hahahahaha...yep...but its already adulterated Spanish since some words are distorted along with the grammar

There are a number of people in Negros who still speaks Spanish. I hope I would still hear Spanish speakers still in the future. :)

Yes...Its quite amazing that despite Negros being late compared to other Spanish settlements like Cebu and Iloilo, the population of Spanish-speaking mestizo and creole families that still exist up to this very day is quite substantial that even the Spanish Embassy and media recognizes.

^^nugon gid tuod sang old bacolod airport nga its idle for how many years na considering nga its location is strategic. i hope cong golez and mayor bing will sit down with mr. lucio tan and talk about the future of the airport.:)

Yes, kill that dream of reviving the singcang airport and plan out now on how to make it into a new potential. We will wait lang ah...it took decades before Lahug became Asiatown in Cebu

My grandfather was one of those top guerilla POW's in 1944 that was incarcerated and tortured in the jail (called "Kimpitay/Quimpitay"). He was then brought to the Banago Port to be beheaded but jumped to the sea and escaped.

So for us, the jail is the symbol of family pride and Filipino patriotism as one of the last bastions of opposition against the Japanese in WWII

Its part and parcel of history. For me we will demolish the whole area and leave that welcome arc, part of the wall and the watchtower....then put greens around it to make it a small linear park. the property is big enough man so instead of building a mall adjacent to it push the building backwards and make the Fort San Juan arc a centerpiece of the entrance to the mall, just like what the giant Peacock does in front of 888 Chinatown

And wait a minute, what is this I heard? They are removing the carabao statues at the Capitol Lagoon? Now these are something that needs to be protected. Those statues are I think Tolentino (Oblé) and Francesco Monti (Iloilo City Hall) vintages!

The Bacolod City Govt Property in the old Bacolod Airport is that stretch of the runway to the sea

PAL/Lucio Tan's property is that where the terminal, control tower, apron and taxiway, and the opposite stretch of the runway stands

most of the Capitol Lagoon's facelift will be on its sides along North and South Capitol Road and the site of the stage and the steps towards the Capitol Building. I think the obelisk there will be changed to a larger one with a pathway bordered by Buri Palms to replace the stage and steps. This will reinforce "The Axis", the architecture that will give focus of the Lagoon Park as a pathway leading to the Capitol

That's good. At least Ayala has a clear vision what is supposed to be heritage. Given also that they will be the ones developing Intramuros for its "revival" sometime soon.

Now, its the provincial jail that is the concern. The facade would be retained, although personally they may use the existing (or perhaps the original) structure and suit it to adaptive reuse. Basta, indi lang nila ina pagahimuan as a parking lot, just like what they did to the Ayuntamiento of Intramuros.

1890's I think by the order of Fr.Mauricio Fererro....built by the hands of the criminals at that time from the old jail just beside the public plaza

No roads or streets will be changed as far as I heard

Ha hahahahaha...yep...but its already adulterated Spanish since some words are distorted along with the grammar

Yes...Its quite amazing that despite Negros being late compared to other Spanish settlements like Cebu and Iloilo, the population of Spanish-speaking mestizo and creole families that still exist up to this very day is quite substantial that even the Spanish Embassy and media recognizes.

Yes, kill that dream of reviving the singcang airport and plan out now on how to make it into a new potential. We will wait lang ah...it took decades before Lahug became Asiatown in Cebu

I totally reject the total demolition of Fort San Juan. That area is too historical to be taken for granted. They can retain the arc bearing the sign Real Fuerza de San Juan with gardens. I envision it to be like Intramuros nga ara sa isa ka part sang suba (in this case dalan) kag ang Parian (Chinatown, actually 888 CHINATOWN Mall, hahaha!) ara sa tabuk.

A saying says there are many ways to kill a cat and surely there are many ways to preserve the structure as long as there is political will. Kung ang himuon man lang ka 8888 gub-on na tanan, I'd rather have Gaisano take it or include it in Ayala's development plan. :)

I'm glad Ayala mismo cleared out that these statues will be preserved. In fact, I think that these statues will be in better hands with Ayala. Just look at the statues sa Ayala Center and Bonifacio Global City na ginpabutang sa Ayala, comparable or even mas superior ni ang statues. Ayala appreciates art, unlike it's blue competitor. :pet:

Actually, its a prison for all sorts of criminals then. I do understand your point since Fort San Juan now looks horrendous drenched in all sorts of piss and crap.

I've seen a classical structure in Manila near Rizal Park that has a modern twist pero I believe those must be built in Silay to complement it. :)

^^well its my opinion my taste differs from you guys but if you think its worth saving then be it, for me I don't find it interesting, only landmarks I'm interested to are the carabao's and the gazebo in the bacolod public plaza kag ang macho bar.

I respect your opinion but "Here's the facts!"

Bacolod City was acclaimed as the Most Business Friendly City in the Philippines in 2007 by the Philippine Chamber of Commerce & Industry.

The city is also considered as the Information Technology and Business Process Outsourcing hub of Western Visayas with the presence of 8 major call centers including Teletech, Teleperformance, Convergys and the newly opened Interface Techno-Phil, Inc. at the Lopue's East Center.
According to the “Philippine Cities Competitiveness Ranking Project 2005″ of Asian Institute of Management (AIM), Bacolod tops the list as Number One in terms of infrastructure, ahead of such other mid-size cities like Iligan City, Calamba City, Cagayan de Oro City and General Santos City.

Bacolod also tops the list as Number One in terms of quality of life, ahead of such other mid-size cities like San Fernando City, Baguio City, Iloilo City and Lipa City.

AIM recognizes Bacolod as one of the Top Five most competitive mid-size cities together with Batangas City, Iligan City, Iloilo City and San Fernando City.

Known for being a relatively friendly city, it bears the nickname “City of Smiles.” Bacolod City recently topped a survey by MoneySense Magazine as the “Best Place to Live in the Philippines”.

"TALKING ABOUT THE BUYING POWER OF BACOLODNONS"

Call center gains benefiting Bacolod economy 01/07/2009

BACOLOD CITY, Philippines — Operations of call centers here have released P50 million-P75 million in salaries every month that are expected to have been plowed back into the local economy through consumption, data of the Bacolod-Negros Information and Communications Technology Federation as of last month show.

Ms. Batapa-Sigue said these gains for the local economy do not yet take into account benefits for ancillary industries that cater to call center agents like food, commercial centers, transportation, health and wellness spa, as well as other personal services.

Bacolod hosts three major call centers — Teleperformance, TeleTech, and Convergys — as well as the medium-sized Focus Pacific Communications, Next Level IT Teleservices, and Telequest BPO Center. Teleperformance, which opened in 2006 here, has more than 1,200 employees in the city and plans to hire more shortly. When it opened in October last year, Convergys employed 700 people, but the number was expected to have reached 1,000 by the end of last year. TeleTech also announced it has 2,000 people working here.

That is why we need big investors here Like "AYALA" to deploy more jobs and by golly the way they build structures and develop the place, its "astounding". It will surely attract more foreign investors (BPO) and tourists that means "mo money to Bacolod".

Fellow Bacoleños and Negrenses, indi nalng ina naton pagsapakon si OneRadiation kay wala man pulos ang iya mga comento. But for argument's sake, ang iya statements reflect on his ignorance of the fact that Bacolod City and Negros Occidental has experienced significant economic strides over the past decade and the momentum is vastly increasing. Same goes culturally and socially.

The question is, what are his intentions, really?

DA gives Negros multi-million aid
BY CARA GOMEZ

Secretary Proceso Alcala yesterday announced the Department of Agriculture’s allocation of P126.7 million in assistance to Negros Occidental to boost its crop production.

Alcala was in Bacolod City yesterday for the distribution of crop insurance to 1,510 of 10,000 rice farmers to be covered by the Negros First Universal Crop Insurance Program, described as a first in the country.

The DA may replicate the Negros First Universal Crop Insurance Program in other parts of the country, Alcala said, noting that it is the first time a provincial government has done so on such a large scale.

Jovy Bernabe, president of the Philippine Crop Insurance Corp., said for every hectare of rice land insured, a farmer is guaranteed P17,680 in insurance payment if his crop is hit by pest infestation, plant diseases, and natural calamities.

That means for 10,000 Negros farmers insured, there is a an insurance guarantee of close to P180 million, he said.

Provincial Agriculturist Igmedio Tabianan said the program aims to cover 10,000 Negros Occidental rice farmers by the end of the year.

Under the program an insurance premium of P840 per hectare per cropping is paid to the PCIC, with the provincial government shouldering P500 and the farmers putting up a counterpart of P340, he said.

In some cases the local government where the farmers are located shoulders the remaining P340, so the insurance becomes free for them, Tabianan added.

The farmers will also be covered by the Negros Occidental Comprehensive Health Program, he added.

Yesterday Alcala turned over P1.6 million to Gov. Alfredo Marañon for a High Value Crops Development Project and for Coffee Seedlings and P1 million for production support and irrigation development in the third district of Negros Occidental.

Alcala also announced the allocation of P90 million for the Negros Occidental irrigation highway, P18 million for a rice processing center, P8 million for four combined harvesters, P1 million for a 35 hp tractor, P1 million for seven handheld tractors, P2 million for four transplanters, P1 million for four multipurpose drying pavements, P2 million for four flatbed dryers, P1 million for a hauler truck and P50,000 for corn seeds, Tabianan said.

The DA yesterday also raffled off three threshers worth P300,000, five carabaos worth P150,000, three hand tractors worth P500,000 and 100 bags of certified seeds worth P120,000 to the farmers, Tabianan said.*CPG

Alcala acting on bioethanol tariff
BY CARLA GOMEZ

AgricultureSecretary Proceso Alcala yesterday assured the support of the Aquinoadministration for the country's bioethanol industry, and urged a shift towards the production of organic muscovado to boost the survival of the industry when tariffs on imported sugar are lifted in 2015.

"There is a future for the country's bioethanol industry," said Alcala, who was in Bacolod City for the distribution of crop insurance to rice farmers in Negros Occidental.

The push for the production of bioethenol is still on, he assured.

Bioethanol and sugar industry leaders have complained that Executive Order 449 signed by former President Gloria Arroyo in 2006 reduced the import tariff on bio ethanol from 10 percent to one percent making it difficult for the domestic industry to survive.

They are asking that the tariff be raised to 20 percent, ManuelLamata, United Sugar Producers Federation of the Philippines president, said.

Alcala said a Cabinet technical working group together with the Department of Finance is validating the data on the matter.
When the group comes out with a report, we will submit it to the President for his final decision, he said.

He said he did not want to preempt the technical working group on the tariff level to be set, but said a reversal of the Arroyo EO should be made.
"We should give protection to our farmers," he said.

Luis Tongoy, Confederation of Sugar Producers Associations director, said in the bioethanol law, there is a mandate to use local ethanol first and only import the shortage.

"The Department of Energy should implement the law which will force the oil companies and ethanol producers to agree on a price. The imported ethanol price does not compete with the local ethanol price because of the mandate," Tongoy said.

The main reason for the stop in bioethanol production at the San Carlos City plant was the increase in the price of sugarcane for table sugar, said Alcala, who denied that the bioethanol industry is being ignored by the Aquino administration.

Areas that do not compete with food production will be used for the planting of crops for biothenaol production, he added.

Meanwhile, he said the best chance farmers have to survive after 2015 when tariffs on imported sugar are lifted, is to convert some of its lands into the production of organic muscovado that is in demand inEuropeat high prices
Organic fertilizer is also a lot cheaper, he added.

Alcala said as of now 25 percent of the country's agricultural produce is organic.

Alcala said he personally is a practitioner of organic farming and when he started five years ago it was only 5 percent.

Last night he was meeting with a Singaporean group in Manila interested in importing organic vegetables from the country, Alcala said.

He is excited about the potential of Canlaon City in Negros Oriental and Don Salvador Benedicto in Negros Occidental in growing organic vegetables, Alcala said.

Alcala said he can include their produce as priorities for export to neighboring countries. He said the country currently exports organic vegetables toJapan,SingaporeandHongKong.

"Going organic is the future of agriculture in the county," he said.*CPG

Nietes-Garcia title tiff set Oct. 8 at USLS

By Jerome S. Galunan Jr.
Saturday, August 6, 2011

BACOLOD City and Negros Occidental will be making history as former World Boxing Organization (WBO) minimumweight champion and current WBO light flyweight No.1 challenger Donnie “Ahas” Nietes leads the pack of the country’s great boxers in world championship battles dubbed Pinoy Pride 9 on October 8, 2011 at the University of St. La Salle.

Nietes will be challenging Mexican champion Ramon Hirales-Garcia in the WBO light flyweight division.

In the heavily packed undercard, reigning WBO Asia Pacific bantamweight champion AJ “Bazooka” Banal will see action, along with Negrense champions Merlito “Tiger” Sabillo and Arthur “El Matador” Villanueva, against yet to be named opponents.

Incidentally, Sabillo and Villanueva officially signed up with ALA Promotions as a sidelight of the press conference yesterday.

ALA Promotions President and CEO Michael Aldeguer said that the main reason in changing the schedule of the match from September 10 to October 8 is the significance of the fight.

“This fight is too big that we need to prepare well. This is a world championship match which will be aired not only in the Philippines but all over Mexico and other parts of the world as well,” Aldeguer pointed out.

He also explained why Banal stepped in for the undercard match instead of the earlier scheduled Milan Melindo.

“We have a big plan for both Melindo and Banal. That’s why we are keen on providing these fighters a good fight,” Aldeguer added.

Banal will be fighting for a 10-round bout in the 118 lbs division. However, his opponent is still to be determined.

Meanwhile, Murcia-native Nietes (28 wins, 1 loss and 3 draw) said that he is not affected by the changes in the match schedule.

“I’ve been in tough training for this fight and I’m not in any way affected by the changes. I’m very excited to fight again in front of my kasimanwas,” he stressed.

On the other hand, undefeated and current Philippine minimumweight champion Sabillo (15 wins, 7KOs) will be up for the biggest fight of his life, as he battles Tejares Singwancha for the Oriental Pacific Boxing Federation (OPBF) minimumweight championship.

The Toboso-born Sabillo said that this is a great chance for him to reach his dreams and help his family.

“I’m very thankful to Sir Aldeguer for giving us this fight. Likewise, I’m grateful for the help extended to us by chairman Monju Guanzon and our manager Rev. Henry Guanzon,” Sabillo humbly said.

For his part, the 22-year-old Villanueva, who fights in his second stint under an ALA promotions boxing event, said that this is an opportunity for them to get a big break in their professional careers.

Like Sabillo, the Bago City native also thanked Aldeguer, Chairman Guanzon and Rev. Guanzon for their assistance which allowed him to earn this opportunity.

Villanueva, the undefeated and reigning Philippine flyweight champion with 15 Kos in 17 wins, will be fighting Richard ‘Tibay’ Betos for the Philippine bantamweight belt.

Both Sabillo and Villanueva are fighting for Top Prime Stable of Rev. Guanzon. Recently, they moved to Cebu to undergo training at the ALA gym in preparation for their upcoming fight.

“I’m so happy that I experienced training at ALA and, most especially, sparing with champion Nietes,” Sabillo said.

Other fighters in the Nietes-Garcia undercard are Bacolod City’s JP Artieda against Japan’s Kazuya Harada (4 rounds in 112lbs); Antique’s Mark Acub fighting Japan’s Arai Yoshinubo (4 rounds in 130lbs); Toledo City’s Ryan Canillas facing Tagbilaran City’s Lito Dante (4 rounds, 110lbs); and North Cotabato’s Rommel Asenjo (8 rounds in 105lbs). However, Asenjo’s opponent is still to be determined.

Edifice in Focus: The NOHS Building

By Betsy Gazo

Saturday, August 6, 2011

DID you know that Rizal Elementary School was Instituto Rizal and was referred to as the provincial high school?

Founded in 1902 by Governor Melencio Severino and Thomasite George W. Bettie, Instituto Rizal became known as Rizal Institute in 1905 when education official reports were written in English.

In 1927, the permanent high school building at the present site was constructed and was finished in 1931. Yet, strangely enough, the name inscribed in the building façade was ‘BACOLOD HIGH SCHOOL” because what was written in the Appropriations Act of 1927 was “the construction of the Bacolod High School”.

In 1910, there were only six graduates at the Rizal Institute, namely Emilio Y. Hilado (Class President and Valedictorian), Isabel Jugo (Class Vice-President and Salutatorian), Magdalena Locsin, Feliciano C. Sombito, Emilio Sanson, and Jose Nessia.

Now, thousands of alumni call NOHS their alma mater, including such esteemed personalities such as Ramon Bagatsing, Rafael Salas, Jorge Vargas, Carlos Hilado, and Inocencio Ferrer.

I have come across interesting facts about the school. Did you know that in 1927, the annual tuition fee was P10 and it was payable in two installments? The school had a publication called The Reflector. In 1929, one could subscribe to this publication if he could come up with 0.70 centavos per year.

The minimum salary of a classroom teacher then was P180 per month. And Class ’35 was probably over the moon when they were served halo-halo by no less than an admiral of the Japanese Imperial Navy. Little would they know that their school would be converted into a Japanese garrison in the war that would follow.

The main building of the eight-hectare site is the square-shaped Gabaldon-type structure commonly constructed from 1907-1946 when Assemblyman Isauro Gabaldon authored Republic Act 1801, which appropriated P1 million for the construction of school buildings in every municipality in the country.

The act is also known as the Gabaldon Law. Gabaldon schoolhouses which followed a standard plan by Architect William Parsons are now considered heritage structures.

The NOHS building has 21 classrooms with tall vertical capiz-shell windows that could be pushed open outwardly at the bottom. It turns at the center and is held by hinges on both sides so air could circulate from both the top and the bottom. Transoms also provide ample ventilation from the corridor. The classrooms wrap around a center patio cum quadrangle which is now roofed to provide protection from rain and sun. This architectural style is actually ideal for our tropical climate and is ecologically friendly, too.

What I find charming about the building is the façade with the bas relief designs of scrolls, garlands, cherubims, books, candelabras, and even owls which are popular symbols of wisdom. In front of the building are steps that lead one through the handsome arches and into the library. On opposite sides of the steps are two sculptures of what I perceive as Greek female figures symbolizing virtues that the youth should emulate.

The first American principal of NOHS was D’Artagnan Williams while the first Filipino principal was Candido Sugatan who took over in 1935 until 1941. The school’s present administrator is Principal IV Mario S. Amaca who gladly accommodated my request for information and the chance to explore the building. Many thanks to him and to Music Department Head Grace Lumayno, an old friend who facilitated my visit.

Negrense jins rule national tourney

BACOLOD CITY—Negros Occidental jins donning the colors of Murcia stamped their class and brought home for the fourth time the 34th SMART National Taekwondo Championships crown over the weekend.

Seeing action against topnotch players from all over the country, the female taekwondo standouts ruled the 32-team field, while the elementary boys’ team highlighted their campaign with a 3rd runner-up finish.

Mayor Andrew Montelibano, who led the Murcia contingent, said he was elated by the performance of the athletes, whose skills were honed under the tutelage of Negros Tigers Union mentor Jim-Jim Chua.

Assisting Chua is the multi-awarded Pauline Reyes and Ernesto Antonio Hinojas II, executive assistant to the mayor in charge of sports.

“Our athletes showed what sports excellence is all about by dominating much experienced opposition. They truly deserve to be role models as they even conducted sports camps for young Murcia kids during the summer period,” Montelibano said.

Murcia went home with the overall title in the July 28 to August 2 event sanctioned by the Philippine Taekwondo Association and hosted by the Makati City government.

Members of the champion girls team are Camille Miraflores, Sam Arrieta, Kathleen Dinsay, Stephanie Lamayo, Irene Bermejo and Anja Dael.

The boys’ side is comprised of Aaron Dael, Marcus Hinojas, Joshua Rosalia, Anton Guinanao, Jason Locsin and Khaizzer Batano. (PNA)

Bacolod is experiencing a construction boom. Buildings with modern architecture are also on the rise. This is also the perfect time for NegOcc's LGU to uphold stronger ordinances on the preservation and beautification of our remaining heritage structures. A glimpse of our history thru this old structures is like a trip down memory lane which the old and the younger ones must adhere. :)

Zubiri staff vacates Senate office

by Pia Gutierrez, ABS-CBN News
Posted at 08/06/2011 9:04 PM | Updated as of 08/06/2011 9:04 PM

MANILA, Philippines – The staff of resigned senator Juan Miguel “Migz” Zubiri has started to clear his office for its new resident, lawyer Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel, who is expected to move in once he is proclaimed by the Senate Electoral Tribunal (SET).

Zubiri's staff was in a somber mood as they began to vacate Senate room 512 on Saturday.

Alex Grengia is one of the more than 20 staff of Zubiri, who is set to lose their jobs following their boss' resignation.

Zubiri promised that he will still take care of them even now that he is out of the office.

“Pangako naman niya na kahit anong mangyari, ilalagay niya kami sa ibang office,” said Grengia.

Next week, Zubiri will meet with the new occupant of his office for a reconciliation meeting.

Pimentel is expected to move in once he is proclaimed by the SET.

“Gusto ko siyang makita, kamayan at i-congratulate,” Zubiri said of his closest rival in the contested 2007 senatorial elections.

Zubiri is set to take a long vacation with his family before serving as a consultant for the sugar industry in Negros Occidental for a salary of P1 per year.

Pimentel, on the other hand, is now busy forming his Senate staff.

“Double time kami ngayon to form a team that will help me select my staff,” said Pimentel.

Pimentel plans to take his oath in Mati, Davao Oriental, where he placed second during the 2007 elections.

As a senator, he plans to file his first bill that would seek to expedite the resolution of electoral protests.

“I’m sure hindi lang ako ang nag-rereklamo ng delay na involved sa isang litigation,” said Pimentel.

Pimentel also plans to file amendments on the local government code, which was authored by his father, former Senator Aquilino Pimentel.

Juicekoh Amega,Daw PARRY gid ya ang dining experiencing sa Bacolod?Juicekoh.,Juicekoh,Juicekoh.but sige na lang gani:lol::lol::lol:,^^ I usually boast to my officemates here in IBM how Bacolod is comparable to Paris when it comes to Dining... Medyo exaggerated lang ang akon nga description pero it really shows... We might not have the FINE DINING in Bacolod but look at our Resto's, diba? And we're like the Pastries Capital of the Philippines (wala may magsaka da kilay ha kay damu damu na ko di bala tweezer/tyani subong just in case) kay sa kadamuon sang Pasty Shops sa Bacolod...

I sometimes pity myself here in Manila because, kung mag dine out kami ka mga upod ko dire sa UP Ayala Technohub, I cant help but compare the food with our Local Resto's. I am enjoying food here at Php250-350 per serving (sandwiches at flapjacks) while I can enjoy it at Php 100-150 in Bacolod but tastes better... Sa SMH pa lang nga mga sandwiches, WIT NA SILA... just being Honest...

That's why, kung pasugtan lang kami bilog nga team by October, sa Bacolod kami ma Team Building kay ang mga upod ko FOOD LOVERS guid... hahaha especially when I told them that you can eat Oysters, Scallops, Tiger Prawns, Blue Marlin Tuna, Etc etc and MOUTHWATERING PASTRIES at less than half the price than what we are paying for here in Manila... They were like, WTF! We want to go to Bacolod... and ang isa sa pinaka-fave nila nga Linya ko, JOSHKU, you gotta experience the Kilometer-long Street Party during Masskara Festival... and have yourselves bathed with Beers all night long... their eyes GREW BIG!!! hahahaha

Ang TL ko naman ya Mountaineer and ang isa ko kaupod, plan nila ya, masaka sa Mt.Kanlaon... hahahaha :)

Zubiri staff vacates Senate office
