http://i1211.photobucket.com/albums/cc430/docdoms/IMG_9441.jpg
Eleven years ago I visited Mr.Tanatan (right) at PHIVOLCS-KVO for a research...dreaming to be a vulcanologist...but destiny placed me in the hospital. And its nice we met again, with him as the head of the PHIVOLCS-KVO (La Carlota-Main, Cabagnaan, Pula-Mananawin Stations) plus a helping out a young vulcanologist from Albay, Mr. Ericson Bariso (left) who succumbed to slight heat exhaustion climbing the volcano's slopes.

These vulcanologists are regularly visiting our province...added tourists by word of mouth. They do not only visit Negros Occ. for its tourist spots but also for scientific and educational purposes, and to promote scientifically-sound geological disaster preparedness in Negros :banana::banana:

Holy Week in April....take the Guintubdan Trail for starters

Basta climbing Kanlaon volcano is good from March to the end of May...then end of October to December.....but climbing the last quarter is quite dangerous due to unpredictable weather during the monsoon and sudden plunges of temperature that could cause hypothermia...(I lost a friend in October 1995 there :ohno:)

To suffer a hypothermia, that must be a sudden and extreme drop of temperature up there. :ohno: Anyway, manghagad lang ko friends ko na experienced na para wala problem. Ma-secure pa na permit I guess... diin pwede? :D

Bacolod to hosts 2011 Visayas area Business Conference

THE city of Bacolod in Negros Occidental will be this year's venue for the 20th Visayas Area Business Conference (VABC) of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI).

The VABC theme for this year is "Public-Private Partnership-Visayas Vehicle to a Vibrant Economy." It will be held on September 15-17.

Invited in the business conference are Vice President Jejomar Binay as keynote speaker; Antonio Aquino, president of the Ayala Land Incorporated; lawyer Allan Gepty, deputy executive director of the Intellectual Property Office; Secretary Florencio Abad, Department of Budget and Management; Marcelino Remotigue, president of the Northern Mindanao Vegetables Producers Association; and Virgilio Paralisan, an ICT expert.

Davao City mayor Rodrigo Duterte together with Energy Secretary Jose Rene Almendras and PCCI national president Ambassador Francis Chua were also invited.

The conference will be attended by hundreds of businessmen in three Visayas regions (6,7,8) and to be hosted by the Metro Bacolod Chamber of Commerce and Industry. (PNA)

Paglaum no longer up for lease
BY CARLA GOMEZ

Negros Occidental Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. yesterday said he has decided not to lease part of the Paglaum Sport Complex in Bacolod City, as the provincial government will earn more from constructing its own building.

The governor had earlier said the bidding for the lease of part of the sports complex property along Lacson and Hernaez streets would be announced soon.

But yesterday he said he has changed his mind and has decided to instead set a bidding for contractors interested in constructing a building for the province at the site.

“It is more advantageous to the province to construct the building itself,” he said.

Rough estimates show that the provincial government will earn P1.6 million more a month from leasing out space from a building it constructs, he said.

If you lease the 20,000 square meter property at P73 per square that’s P1,460,000 a month in rent, he said.

But if the provincial government leases the building with a floor area of 1,200 square meters at 400 per square meter, the province will earn P4.8 million a month, he said.

In five years time the lease earned by the province will pay for the building estimated to cost about P300 million, he said.*CPG

SCBI to produce ethanol year round now: Zabaleta
BY CARLA GOMEZ

San Carlos Bioenergy Inc. has resumed production of ethanol fuel and recently delivered 1.08 million liters to Petron, Arnel Amparo, its vice president for operations and resident manager, said last night.

“We intend to produce ethanol year round, along with power and, later on, CO2. We intend to succeed even if we had some initial hiccups, and will be a reliable supplier to our consumers,” Jose Ma. Zabaleta, SCBI chairman, told the DAILY STAR.

Under the Biofuels Act of 2006 a minimum of 10 percent blend of bioethanol is currently required in all gasoline fuel distributed and sold in the country.

In June 2010, SCBI put its ethanol production on hold due to high sugarcane feedstock prices with the increase in table sugar rates making it not economically viable, he said. The firm then shifted to producing syrup for sugar, he said.

Amparo said to have better profit margins SBCI will continue to produce syrup for sugar, and will use molasses as feedstock for ethanol.

He said the 1.08 million liters of ethanol they produced from June 15 to July 11 used heads-and-tails as feedstock, which are rejects from potable alcohol distilleries in Negros Occidental – Distileria Bago Inc. and Roxol Distillery.

When the sugar crop year begins in September SBCI will produce ethanol from molasses, he said, noting that that 60 percent of the country’s molasses are produced in Negros Occidental.

They expect to use 10,000 tons of molasses a month for ethanol production, he said, explaining that one ton produces 240 liters of ethanol for a total of 2,400,000 liters.

Zabaleta said they are now installing additional pumps and tanks to be able to resume ethanol production from September onwards.*CPG

Capitol allots P100M to buy cattle, sheep from Australia
BY CARLA GOMEZ

The Negros Occidental provincial government is allocating P100 million for the purchase of cattle and sheep from Australia soon and for the development of its facility in Murcia where they will be placed, Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr. yesterday said.

He said the P80 million will be for 2,000 heads of sheep and 1,200 heads of cattle, while the P20 million will be for the facility.

The livestock will be shipped to Negros on a cattle boat from Australia, and are expected to arrive in November, he said.

The cattle boat is designed to ensure that the livestock are comfortable and do not get ill on the trip, he said.

These vessels are different from the ones in the Philippines where cattle are shipped in containers, he said.

The governor said the 150-hectare Murcia property of the provincial government for livestock is now planted to 60 hectares of napier grass for the cattle to grace on.

The sheep and cattle will eventually be dispersed to small farmers for breeding, he said.

The governor denied that there have been numerous deaths from previous batches of cattle purchased by the province.

He said only three of cattle died from shipping in the past but the rest have already gotten fat.

“A lot of the sheep we bought earlier have already given birth,” he also said.

Later on we will have Negros First lamb chops, prime cut beef and prime cut pork for import substitution and export, he said.*CPG

Disaster budget ok’d

The City Development Council recently approved the request of the Bacolod City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management for a budget of P42 million for pre-disaster activities and P18 million for quick response fund, or immediate relief assistance.

The request is contained in a resolution on the BCDRRM’s annual work and financial plan and the amount will be chargeable to the 5 percent local disaster risk reduction and management fund, a release from City Hall said.

The P42 million will cover 2011 DRRM training of to P2.5 million, Sewer Jet for flood control - P23.7 million; rescue vehicles, rescue equipment and gears and communication equipment - P3.6 million, and the construction of evacuation centers in four selected schools in the barangays of Bacolod City - P12.2 million.

BCDRRM head Joemarie Vargas said engineers will study the selected schools before putting up evacuation centers in their covered courts. The covered courts will be renovate(d) and toilet and bath, clinic, breastfeeding area, operating center, relief operation office and cooking area, will be put up he said.

Vargas said they will submit the resolution to the Bacolod Sangguniang Panlalawigan for approval so that engineers can start the studyes the selected schools. If approved by the City Council, the city will release the requested fund immediately so they can proceed with the construction of the evacuation centers, he said.*

Negros booters eyed for Japanese clubs

Japanese football teams are eyeing Negros players to train in Japan and eventually, become part of the different clubs in their country, Governor Alfredo Marañon said yesterday.

Marañon said that football scouts, who joined the delegation from Japan to watch how Negros Occidental players play against their team from OGI High School in Thursday’s friendly match, visited his office to discuss their plans.

The governor said the scouts are interested to tap Filipino-Japanese booters to join their local teams in Japan after being told about the Philippine Azkals and how they played against Kuwait, one of the higher-ranked football squad in Asia.

“Because of the success of the Azkals, the Japanese want to train our local players by bringing them to Japan and make them part of their clubs,” Marañon said

He added that the visitors were impressed with what they saw last Thursday after the Negros First team, represented by players from West Negros University, won against the Japan team, 6-4. Included in the lineup of the visiting OGI High School squad were four Japanese girl players.

The Japanese officials were also impressed with the football pitch at the Panaad Stadium and told the governor that they will bring their teams to train in Negros.

“They like our facilities and said it is cheaper to train here than in Japan, so they will come back and bring their team for training,” Marañon said.

Adding to the attractions of Negros to the visiting delegation from Japan are the beaches in the south where Japanese Ambassador Toshinao Urabe went for scuba diving the other day.

Marañon said Urabe tested the waters in Sipalay and liked the place.

The Japanese enjoy was in Negros Occidental to join the 50th Anniversary celebration of the Organization for Industrial, Spiritual and Cultural Advancement in Bacolod City.*NAB

WITH LIVE MUSIC
‘MassKara going truly mardi gras mode’

The MassKara streetdance competitions this October will make the celebration truly mardi gras-like with the use of drums, percussions and various parade instruments.

Gerry Grey, music committee chairman of the MassKara Festival, said the contagious live music from large groups of drumbeaters and dancers will transform Bacolod into the Philippine version of tropical mardi gras.

The live music using drums, percussions and various parade instruments such as brasses, xylophones and horns, as accompaniment for the barangay streetdance competitions, will produce a highly infectious rhythm in terms of danceability and audience participation, especially tourists, he said at the second choreographers’ workshop yesterday at the Liga ng mga Barangay Hall.

Festival director Eli F. J. Tajanlangit and streetdance committee chairman Rudy Reveche also discussed the guidelines of the streetdance competitions.

Tajanlangit said a series of workshops is scheduled to harness the skills, talent and creativity of the participants into producing quality music for the streetdance competitions.

Reveche said the choreographers and trainers who attended the workshop were very enthusiastic during the meeting, which gives an idea of how lively the streetdance will be.

“The big challenge for our choreographers, trainers and musicians would be to come up with a truly unique MassKara beat. We are very excited as well because we do not know how far they can deliver in terms of quality music,” he said.

He noted that as of now, some participants have expressed the intentions to use wind instruments.

Grey challenged the barangay representatives to maximize their creativity by making their own drum and percussion designs, as well as their own distinct island or tropical rhythms.

He also challenged them to use unique musical instruments so that they can also produce unique sound.

Gani man migs. At least maavoid na ang practice sang other sugar centrals to dump there molasses sa river since the price is too cheap. Not to mention it would also increase the price of molasses since there would be a competition now to its use. Aside sa mga distillery, ang ethanol plant would now be buying molasses also.:cheers:

Each barangay can actually create its own style and presentation merging live drumbeaters and dancers, and even their own percussion inventions, he said.

What is even more exciting is that, because the participants are using live music, their music and performance is not limited to a fixed area, as what usually happens in the past, using sound systems in street corners, Grey said.*

No to Ayala project delay

I WISH Gov. Marañon was speaking with an angel’s tongue when he said that the court will throw out SM’s suit against the award of Ayala Land for the development of the Capitol’s seven-hectare property.
So much by way of economic benefits are anchored on the development of this area such that every Negrenses’ wish is for this court case to be over so that Ayala can start work on the project, which means hundreds, if not thousands, of the unemployed multitude can be gainfully employed.

Suppliers of construction materials, from sand and gravel to lumber for stills to cement and steel bars, will have a field day, with Bacolod City earning by way of taxes therefrom.

And after work on the development project is completed, thousands more will be more or less gainfully employed, from sales girls to clerks, janitors, security guards, etc.

And the city will earn millions of revenues from the commerce slot; will surely thrive within this seven-hectare provincial property.

If the current city officials do not steal it, then it will accrue to the various essential needs of its residents.

Unlike the reclamation area, where aside from SM’s department store, nothing else of economically beneficial value has happened, this seven-hectare area will definitely come alive with trade and commerce, as well as with recreational facilities for the relaxation and enjoyment of the city’s tired and weary work force, as well as for the well-to-do and the filthy rich.

I think it is downright criminal to delay this project just so one business giant can put one over the other.

Death trap

THE first flyover installed by the Department of Public Works and Highways is trumpeted as evidence of the progress of Bacolod City and of Negros Occidental. It is seen as such that politicians fought a media war and made backroom deals to get the credit. Costing P365 million, just a few millions from that of the New Government Center, it is a very costly bridge over no river but nobody bothered to ask the real cost of such a structure. Everyone was mesmerized by it, the structure that is, but not its costs as if this is really the true cost.

But as old folks would say, any structure will have its dagà, an offering to the gods for man’s arrogance in making something that would make him forget his humanity and dependence. This medieval belief is being practiced even in our modern times.

The flyover has only two lanes. On Monday, a friend had a harrowing experience there just after midnight. As she was going up, during the hours when it was pitch-black as there was no light in the flyover, the beam of the incoming vehicle’s headlights hit her, momentarily blinding her.

Should not there be lights on both dies of the bridge to absorb or neutralize the beams?

A motorcycle behind overtook her car — right on the bridge. She noticed that these motorcycle kids (men acting like kids) were racing up and down the flyover. The late-night racing from Mandalagan to Ayala North Point is a new experience for these kids.

The flyover is a death trap unless the DPWH puts the necessary warning luminous devices, especially lights, to guide the motorists. This flyover — a very, very expensive project can be the worst of our nightmares. The national government, the DPWH especially, can be sued for any damage or loss of life for their negligence.

I cannot understand why the public works project intended to divert the flow of traffic had to construct concrete dividers and obstacles when large plastic water containers or tanks will do.

Any vehicle that smashes at the tank will stop on its tracks but there will be only minor damage to the vehicle and no loss of life. Government engineers and politicians surely have seen this in the movies or in their expensive “Lakbay Aral,” so I wonder why they are still in the concrete block mentality.

Sure, some wise guys might take the drums away but there are means to keep them in place in such a way that they cannot be carted away so easily. I know that some of our citizens even dig up reflectors in the highways. Reflectors and water tanks, though, are cheaper compared to property damage and human life.

Moreover, I do not believe that government and engineers refrain from these measures because they believe that all Filipinos are thieves. Surely not everybody is a thief in the same way that not every DPWH official or employee is corrupt or incompetent.

Reports of accidents have already come in. An Innova hit smack right at the railing; fortunately, it was just the car that got wrecked. The city should demand that the DPWH place enough warning devices, reflectors and signages to prevent further accidents.

In five years time the lease earned by the province will pay for the building estimated to cost about P300 million, he said.*CPG

ok man kon amo na plano ni gov sa paglaum. Sa Mindanao kadamo ko nakita nga ang city or provincial government ang nagpa construct sa building kag gina pa arkelahan sa mga private businesses. A good example is the Market City in Cagayan where the big portion was taken by SM SaveMore and the C3 in Pagadian where Robinsons occupies most of the space.

The governor said the 150-hectare Murcia property of the provincial government for livestock is now planted to 60 hectares of napier grass for the cattle to grace on.

Later on we will have Negros First lamb chops, prime cut beef and prime cut pork for import substitution and export, he said.*CPG

Negros booters eyed for Japanese clubs

The governor said the scouts are interested to tap Filipino-Japanese booters to join their local teams in Japan after being told about the Philippine Azkals and how they played against Kuwait, one of the higher-ranked football squad in Asia.

“Because of the success of the Azkals, the Japanese want to train our local players by bringing them to Japan and make them part of their clubs,” Marañon said

Good news gid ni ya migs.. Planters (big or small) now would have an option whether isell nila for Ethanol ang ila canes or pagaling sa sugar central. Pwede na macompute if were ang mayo kita.:lol:
^^ma maayo pa gid ini migo kay SCBI will use molasses as feedstock which is a by-product of sugar so that sugar production won't be compromised.
Sang una, daw ano ma lang na ang molasses man. Ginahaboy ma lang ina or ginastock lang pero pwede man mausar as feedstock. Damo na ko nabal-an na hog raisers nga gausar molasses long before pa pero subong lang guid nagsurge ang demand. :D

MAYO MAN NI TANI NGA PROJECT PERO....

This will be the second batch of the cattles from Australia to be again
implemented as cattle fattening to beneficiaries in Murcia.some will be for dairy production in Don Salvador Benedicto, I think.

mind you,the first batch was a failure.

How Ayala Land is upping the ante

By: Marge C. Enriquez
Philippine Daily Inquirer (http://lifestyle.inquirer.net/11349/how-ayala-land-is-upping-the-ante#_)

Fueled by past successes, Ayala is bullish about replicating this live-work-and-play concept in other parts of the country. Building epicenters or central business districts is nothing new to Ayala, given its development projects in Makati, Alabang and Cebu. What’s new are the growth opportunities in other provinces once considered laid-back: Baguio, Cagayan de Oro, Iloilo, Bacolod, Subic and Palawan.

Too, ALI is dusting off its elitist image and marketing with the launch of Amaia Scapes, affordable residential villages in Laguna, Bacolod, Cabanatuan and Nueva Ecija, catering to the growing middle class.

Negros Occidental Golf and Country Club

SATURDAY, 27 AUGUST 2011 17:28 MIKE BESA / WORDS AND IMAGES

http://www.businessmirror.com.ph/images/stories/daily_images/2011/August/08282011/golf02a.jpg

In Photo: The 14th at Negros Occidental Golf and Country Club and 12 is a short but deceptively tricky hole.

IT’S unusual for me to write about a golf course that I haven’t played but I’ve been victim to the unfortunate circumstance of having visited the Negros Occidental Golf and Country Club on two occasions as a journalist covering a tournament there instead of as a competitor. I did manage to play the more intriguing back nine during the 2005 PAL Interclub so I’m not totally unfamiliar with the golf course.
That disclaimer aside, my mother’s family has its roots in nearby Silay City and I later learned that my grandfather, Aguinaldo Severino Gamboa, had quite a role in the development of golf in the province. My mother used to tell me stories of how my grandfather had three holes of golf built on their farm in Buenbanyo not far from the city proper; a par-3, a par-4 and a par-5 prior to the Second World War. The house there became the hangout of his cousins and friends that cherished the game as much as he did.

Later (I’m not sure of the dates involved), he built an18-hole layout on his property outside of the City of Silay in a place called Guinhalaran, which ran parallel to the beach. I remember going to the golf club with him in the early ’60s playing on the beach catching crabs while he and his friends played their afternoon round of golf.

The great Larry Montes was a frequent visitor and stayed at my grandfather’s Silay City residence when he would visit. Another golf great, Paterno Braza, got his start in the game in Guinhalaran as my grandfather’s caddie and later as the caretaker of the course.

Later still, Alfredo Montelibano, then the governor of Negros Occidental, convinced my grandfather to move the golf club to Bacolod City to the location that is now the Capitolville subdivision.

The land was supposed to be granted to the club in perpetuity, but somewhere along the line, things changed and the Negros Occidental Golf and Country Club moved to its current location in Bata Subdivision, just on the outskirts of Bacolod City. It is commonly known to all that come to play it as Marapara after the mountain that casts its shadow on the golf course from the East.

Luis “Golem” Silverio, another Negrense and the most celebrated amateur in all of Philippine golf, designed the golf course in 1962 and though on the short side, Marapara is not lacking when played from the tips by even the most skillful of golfers. Silverio places a number of water hazards strategically throughout the property.

These streams and ponds figure significantly in the course’s resistance to scoring and add to the risk reward factor on many of the golf holes. The fairways are lined by mature pine and eucalyptus trees for the most part with Philippine mahogany and other varieties in less abundance.

Find the wrong fairway with your tee shot and you’ll have your work cut out just getting the ball back in play. The greens are generous but difficult to read. The grain plays a huge role here and will cause many to under-read the speed and break of each putt. Whatever you see, you’d be wise to find a good caddie and heed his advice.

The course’s current routing is unusual to say the least; the front nine circles the perimeter while the back nine fills the center of the property. The outward nine, while the easier of the two, is by no means a pushover. Many of the holes are narrow and out-of-bounds guard the entire right side of the nine.

But scoring opportunities abound here if care is taken and the ball is placed in the correct positions on the course. Of course, the golfer will have to deal with the ever-present wind, which holds a place of legend in Philippine golf lore. This puts a premium on accuracy off the tees to put one in striking distance of the generous but tricky greens.

The back nine will give many golfers heartaches. While OB is no longer a concern, this is where most of the water hazards lie in wait. The holes twist and turn one way then the next favoring neither a draw or a fade; Silverio was the consummate shotmaker and this course makes the same demands of us all. Twelve is a deceptively simple hole; short off the tee at just 335 yards from the tips, a small lake lurks almost unseen off the tee. The prudent will lay up short of the hazard and leave themselves a short iron to the green. Those with good length with their tee shots may opt to carry the hazard, but the perils outweigh the benefits of such a decision. The last three holes are the most difficult on the golf course and add drama to any major tournament played at Marapara.

The par-3 16th measures 179 yards from the tips to a green with a pronounced slope from back to front. A small stream lurks just behind the green and missing to the left of right is almost a sure bogey. Seventeen is the longest of the par-4s; a 426-yard tester with a severe dogleg to the left.

The average golfer has his work cut out for him to find the green in regulation. The last is a superb finishing hole. It’s one of the longest par-5s in the country at 618 yards. You’ll have to lay up short of a water hazard off the tee then put everything you’ve got into the second shot to get as close to the green as you can. Whatever happens, you’ll still be left with a healthy distance to the green for approach shot.

A testament to Marapara’s resistance to scoring is the fact that the winner of the recently concluded ICTSI Negros Occidental Classic, a leg of the Philippine Golf Tour, only managed a three-day total of five-under par while at the ICTSI Orchard Championship held on the club’s Palmer course—site of the Johnny Walker Invitational, the winner there finished with a three-day aggregate score of 12-under par. The difficulty of this golf course transcends its length. It is not one to be underestimated or trifled with and yet provides a most pleasurable round for the recreational golfer. This is a neat little golf course.

I might have not gotten a full round of golf in at the Negros Occidental Golf and Country Club to this day, but this is something I fully intend to rectify in the future. I have more than just a passing connection to the club and golf course and I wish to renew these bonds post-haste.
