U23, Senior squads start training camp

WHILE the rest of the country is in the middle of a long weekend, members of the country’s 23-Under and senior football teams will be back on the field training for their upcoming tournaments.

The senior team will also have a training camp in Bacolod on Sept. 8 to 15 and will have a friendly against a Korean team.

SUPERMARKET chain Puregold Price Club Inc. has obtained the approval of the Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE) to hold an initial public offering worth up to P12.42 billion next month.

The supermarket chain is selling shares to fund an aggressive store network expansion program and to retire maturing debts.

At present, Puregold has 72 stores mainly in Metro Manila and Luzon.  The company plans to open outlets in new locations, including Davao, Rizal, Cavite, Pangasinan, Baguio, Ilocos, Camarines Sur, Bacolod, Cebu, Iloilo, Leyte, Albay and Mindoro.

2011 Ramon Magsaysay Awards: Pinoy NGO builds low-cost water pump for poor tillers

MANILA, Philippines - One of today’s challenges to improve the lives of the world’s bottom billion or those who live on a dollar a day or less is for people and organizations to devise low-cost technologies that could have a big effect on impoverished communities.

In the Philippines, a non-profit organization is quietly doing just that.

The Alternative Indigenous Development Foundation Inc. (AIDFI) is a Filipino social enterprise group and a non-profit organization in the province of Negros Occidental that has, for years, been building technology to serve the poor.


AIDFI designs simple solutions to the problems of the rural poor by fabricating and promoting environment-friendly technology which is accessible and income-augmenting for the poor.

The group, which reinvented the ram pump technology which can lift water to an upland reservoir, is one of this year’s Ramon Magsaysay awardees.

Dutch marine engineer Auke Idzenga, head of AIDFI’s technical department, said the award serves as an inspiration for them to continue and pursue their causes.

“We feel very honored. This is a prestigious award, it’s a stimulation. It’s our reward for the years that we worked hard without funding,” Idzenga told The STAR.

AIDFI’s higher goal is to spread the technology to other countries that need it. Currently, AIDFI has brought the ram pump technology to waterless upland communities in other countries and is now carrying out complete ram pump technology transfer in Afghanistan, Colombia, Nepal, Malaysia and Japan.

In the Philippines, AIDFI has fabricated, installed and transferred 227 ram pumps that now benefit 185 upland communities in Negros Occidental and other provinces.

“We do the installations ourselves, we transfer the model to Afghanistan, Nepal and Colombia,” Idzenga said.

“Our goal is to let this technology be a spin-off into a social enterprise to solve employment problems in the country. We don’t expect the call centers or the BPOs in Manila to solve the problem in the countryside. We want social enterprises like this to be instruments to uplift the lives of the poor,” he said.

“In Europe, there is an economic rethinking of creation of employment. We want young people, engineers, to also consider going into these kinds of social enterprises, go into designing low-cost technologies to help the poor,” Idzenga added.


With the technology, he said the lives of the poor improved markedly.

“Because they have water, there’s less skin health diseases, they started to grow vegetables, they also have small fishponds. They have water for their carabaos. Life has improved for them,” he said.

AIDFI was started during the 1980s, born out of the social turmoil that accompanied the collapse of the sugar industry in Negros at that time.

In the wake of this crisis, a small group of social activists which included Idzenga decided to form AIDFI to address the basic needs of the affected farmers.

Agricultural production and technology development were their initial strategies, but lack of funds and quitting members forced the group to close down.

Idzenga, meanwhile, went back to the Netherlands with his Filipina wife and children. When he came back to Negros in 1997, he decided to revive AIDFI, with a clear focus on innovating technology to help poor, rural families have clean and cheap water for household use as well as livestock raising, aquaculture, and small-scale agriculture.

He said he stumbled upon an ancient and largely abandoned technology called the ram pump which uses the natural kinetic energy of flowing water from rivers or springs to push water uphill without gas or electricity.

As reinvented by AIDFI, the ram pump can lift water to an upland reservoir, with a volume of 1,500 to 72,000 liters of water per day.

Idzenga said AIDFI continues to innovate on technology for the poor. To increase rural incomes AIDFI has designed and fabricated an essential oil distiller that can process lemongrass into organic oil for industrial users.

It transfers this technology to farmers and provides packaging and marketing support and a distribution network that now reaches other countries.

In electing AIDFI to receive the 2011 Ramon Magsaysay Award, the board of trustees recognizes their collective vision, technical innovations and partnership practices to make appropriate technologies improve the lives of the rural poor in upland Philippine communities and elsewhere in Asia.

DPWH takes steps vs. flyover mishaps

The Department of Public Works and Highways has decided to move the median island near the flyover in Brgy. Bata 60 meters away from the structure to prevent further accidents in the area, Bacolod City Administrator Rogelio Balo said yesterday.

Records from the Bacolod City Police Traffic Management Unit show that five vehicular accidents have been reported at the flyover since its inauguration two weeks ago.

On Friday, a driver and his passenger were injured when his jeepney fell on its side at the area in Brgy. Bata, Bacolod City, after the vehicle’s tire rod end was detached.

Balo said the decision to move the median island away from the flyover was approved during a meeting Friday by the DPWH, TMU, Bacolod Traffic Authority, the Land Transportation Office and the City Mayor’s Office, which he represented.

Once the median island is moved farther, Balo said, the vehicles descending and ascending from and to the flyover will have more space and this will prevent vehicular accidents in the area.

He added that the DPWH is also set to hold a dialog with the owner of a hydrovac business beside the flyover so they will no longer allow the vehicles that go there for repair to park in the area as this causes congestion there.

Balo said DPWH will install additional lighting facilities and signage at the flyover anytime this week while TMU is going to field more traffic enforcers and policemen there.

TMU head, Chief Insp. Luisito Acebuche had noted that, aside from the media island near the flyover the inadequacy of signage and lighting facilities at the flyover is also among the reasons why accidents frequently happen there.

Acebuche has appealed to motorists to be extra careful when travelling at the flyover as the area is considered accident-prone.*APN

ONOPRA election slated Wednesday


The Organik na Negros! Organic Producers and Retailers Association will elect its new officers at annual general assembly Wednesday at the Governor’s Hall of the Provincial Capitol Building, in Bacolod City.

Ramon Uy, Jr. an ONOPRA director and owner of Fresh Start Organics, yesterday said the agenda of the meeting includes the creation of sustainable tourism committee that will promote Negros organic farms to visitors and investors.

He said a representative of the Association of Negros Procedures will also present its fifth organic and natural sector to ONOPRA members. Looking at the value chain, ONOPRA serves as suppliers while ANP are the organic producers, Uy added.

If ANP is successful in its venture in organic and natural produce, more local farmers will benefit from it, and the market value of organic materials will increase, Uy said.

The 5th sector of ANP will be launched on Sept. 28 at Rockwell, Manila during the 26th Negros Trade Fair in Rockwell, that will bring Negros food and products to Manila, he also said.

Gov. Alfredo Marañon, Jr. is expected to attend the assembly, Uy added.

The Government intervention like these is just half of the effort, the other half is for the drivers and citizens to follow traffic rules.. Following traffic rules is a good reflection of a progressive society.. Meaning everybody is educated and professional.

Dapat the city council should pass more traffic ordinances to regulate the move of traffic in Bacolod City pero ang mas importante is that they should faithfully execute these ordinances. I say make the punishment heavier sa mga traffic-related offenses. :D

Sa US ya, they categorize hurricanes as to speed and barometric pressure and they also have a separate warning system:

Hurricane Watch (for expected tropical storm force winds: less than 115 kph)
Hurricane Warning (for hurricanes that reach Category 1-5: more than 120 kph for Cat 1 to greater than 250 kph in Cat 5)

Ang PAGASA nga warning system is also unique kay sa Philippines lang ina gina gamit wherein we measure typhoon wind speeds at a 10-minute average so it gives a lower value of velocity compared to a 1-minute average. And we don't categorize typhoons but we built a 4-level warning system to alert people on its expected destructiveness with respect to its wind speed

‘SM’s legal suit deprives Negrenses of opportunities’

BACOLOD City – An official of the Metro Bacolod Chamber of Commerce and Industry said that the legal suit filed by SM Prime Holdings Inc. against the provincial government after the latter awarded the development of its 7.7-hectare prime property is depriving Negrenses and Bacoleños of opportunities.

Oscar “Boy” Zayco, MBCCI president, said that a lot of opportunities and businesses will be made available if the development of the 7.7-hectare Capitol property can be started soon.

He said the legal tussle is delaying the said development thus also prolonging the agony of Negrenses and Bacoleños who are looking forward to the economic and job opportunities that can be made available by Ayala Land.

He also pointed out that between the P2.5-billion investment of SMPHI and the P6-billion of Ayala Land, it is just common sense that anyone will go for the bigger investment.

He added that he himself has seen the presentation of ALI and is awed by it.

“They will build community not just commercial complex and businesses,” he said.

Zayco said he agrees with other sectors and government officials in saying that ALI’s Capitol Civic Center will change the landscape of the province in general and the city of Bacolod in particular.

He reiterated that the MBCCI has expressed its support to Negros Occidental governor Alfredo Marañon as far as his decision on the development of the 7.7-ha. property is concerned.

Ginalabyan siya Migs especially sa isa niya ka ruta which also ends in Batangas. Ambot kung na-continue ina a or ginbilin na lang nila ang nonstop na Manila-Batangas route? Ang Mindoro of course stop-over na ya ka mga biyahe Manila-Iloilo. :D

I always like seeing Ceres buses in Manila kay daw mabulong hidlaw ko. Nami pa guid na sakay kag ara ka na sa Batangas na ang view tubuhan man. Daw Negros na guid except na wala lang ta ya expressway or toll highway. :lol:

Yes, part of SLEX is Carmona BUT we are talking about the provinces being served by VTI. Ceres buses are not dropping or picking up passengers at Carmona Exit. So, TECHNICALLY, it's not serving Cavite.

It's okay to include Laguna because passengers in the Turbina Exit of Calamba can avail of its services but not Carmona.

I think first things first is that we develop further our intra-island commerce. Beef up commerce between the cities and towns of Negros Island. If there is a hustle and bustle of commerce within Negros Island mismo apart from commerce coming from Panay and Cebu or what have you, nothing is impossible pareho sa international port HH nga ginpost ko di few threads ago. :)

Actually Road Network of Negros is extensive. Like Himamaylan has a Network to Oriental, so is La Castellana, Binalbagan,and Moises Padilla. Thats why Cycling and Biking is a Major draw here in the province as well..

NLEX is being used by a lot of provinces and not only bulacan. and when you compare the number of vehicles using the expressway versus our highway here, syado pa kalayo.

But I hope this won't stop us from improving our existing road networks. Damo na bala investors na kilala namun na wala nadayun sa pag-invest sa province ta because of road networks in some places. Ang ginalagas bi sang mga investors is that the road viability from a certain place to the nearest major port. Amo na most of the time ang atun interior towns medyo nabudlayan magkuha iban na investors na ga-involve shipping kay kalayo sa port. :)

the only option is a train system migs. hehehe...kay di pa man viable nga mag-eroplano for now. :)

But I hope this won't stop us from improving our existing road networks. Damo na bala investors na kilala namun na wala nadayun sa pag-invest sa province ta because of road networks in some places. I just mentioned that as a passing thought pero not that I am pushing it to happen. Read it carefully kay ang main thought ko is to improve the other existing provincial road networks to National Road/Highway capability to facilitate faster travel from two Negros provinces. Indi man ako daw mapatay guid na magka-expressway a. :D

Pamatyagan ko ya ang sa Old Airport na issue is that excuse lang ini para maga-push for reopening. Ka bahul sang mga rasones na gusto nila ma re-open kay kuno pwede pa ma extend ang atun na runway kag mabutangan new terminal. Kay sang-una, ang airport nga ina is relatively far man from the downtown area where the major businesses. Wala nila makita nga ang city center maga-expand pakadto guid mismo sa airport area. I think no brainer issue ma lang na ang sa Old Airport by the fact na Eton seems poised to do a big miracle there. :lol:

Gani man. As far as I know, wala na da bilin na navigational equipment sa Old Airport. Why not ayhan wala na lang nagbakal new equipment for the Kabankalan Airport? :)

He said the bank has submitted its building permit application but there are still requirements that need to be complied with.

“There is one requirement of the National Building Code we want them to incorporate in their plan and we are waiting for their action,” Hechanova said.

Public works urged to put safety measures at flyover

A BACOLOD City lawmaker has urged Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) officials to put safety measures at the newly opened flyover following reports of vehicular accidents in the area.

Five vehicular accidents have occurred at the Lacson-Circumferential flyover in Barangay Bata weeks after it was opened to traffic.

These incidents struck the attention of Bacolod City Representative Anthony T. Golez who helped facilitate the realization of the first project.

The flyover was under the President's Bridge Program approved for Bacolod City during the administration of former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

Golez said that there is a need to put up lamp posts at the flyover so that the motorists can be guided on the presence of the flyover in the area.

He said there is also a need to put a reflectorized cats' eye that will also guide motorist taking the flyover.

Motorists who collided at the flyover’s concrete barrier failed to see it, thus there must be a gradual line that will safely lead them to the flyover, Golez said. He suggested that there must have warning signs near and at the flyover.

Golez believes that there is a need to further educate motorists by putting some safety warnings on the use of the flyover.

The public expects an increase in the traffic volume at the flyover and underneath when the north terminal and Ceres bus terminal becomes operational soon. (Carla N. Canet)

I'm really surprised how you can build a structure that's nearing its completion date and still not have a building permit....and to add insult there is already an operating business on the ground floor. How the hell were they able to get an occupancy permit, an electrical permit/connection ,etc etc.....only in Bacolod..:ohno::ohno:

Basi may ma sprout pa man na business complex behind it like sa SeaOil and Villa Angela Arcade. Daw dungan sa pag-boom sang business ang gasolinahan invasion sa City of Bacolod and the rest of Metropolitan Bacolod. :lol:
