I'm really surprised how you can build a structure that's nearing its completion date and still not have a building permit....and to add insult there is already an operating business on the ground floor. How the hell were they able to get an occupancy permit, an electrical permit/connection ,etc etc.....only in Bacolod..:ohno::ohno:

^^dungol nga project engineer guro...hehe.

Basi may ma sprout pa man na business complex behind it like sa SeaOil and Villa Angela Arcade. Daw dungan sa pag-boom sang business ang gasolinahan invasion sa City of Bacolod and the rest of Metropolitan Bacolod.

^^ambot kon part pa ina sang gonzaga property? may ari nga ginpost si @christendom nga daw rendering sang business complex sa dira nga area. and it looks great.:)

Daw okay pa man na ang dalan in my opinion, ngaa ginbuhuan na nila ya? Roads are supposed to be placed by segments kay kung maguba ang isa ka segment, buslan lang ina nga segment kag indi ang bilog nga dalan! Ay nano nga pisyo ni nila man? Pinagusto na lang ni guba-repair-guba-repair? Excited sila makakuha kickback? :bash::bash::bash:

^^pictures, pictures dayon kay its a good vantage point being the tallest building in kwan a.....

I hope SanParq would make it into a lifestyle area like a roofdeck resto with a disco-bar just beneath it. this would draw the crowd skyward and would open the building for those interested to lease on its floors :banana::banana:

expressway? nga-a mapaobra ka sg expressway kay kadalagko sg dalan ta? and the tax we are paying are enough to maintain it. sin-o nga ungoy2x ang malabay didto kag mabayad pa sg toll fee?
what we need is a diversion road para sa mga sugarcane trucks and not an expressway. damu pa ta pang-uson nga tubo to be as big as metro manila.

I think the best thing is to revive the railway link of all sugar centrals and have sugarcane be transported by rail exclusively. the rail link would pass through the inland areas of Negros Occidental from Sagay to Kabankalan.

North Terminal Station - Sagay Farmers and Lopez Sugar then will have transloading stations at those towns mga malabyan nila nga may sugarcane fields. Imagine it will be the rebirth of our "iron dinosaurs" that tourists would love to see again

This may pave way to a parallel passenger line that will connect our landlocked towns and cities for easy travel.

^^they have 2 routes....one is buendia(manila) to batangas pier via star tollway and the other is buendia(manila) to batangas pier via lipa-tanauan. not so sure with cavite...

Ang blue na Ceres, Manila-Batangas route ina siya operated as another sub-brand: Ceres Transport. Ang Ceres Liner and Ceres Tours are all yellow man giyapon... I think? :)

Ang blue ang asta Batangas while ang yellow regular Ceres Liner/Tours buses ang gapa-Iloilo. Naka-sakay ko sa blue pagkadto ko Batangas sang summer. :)

VALLACAR TRANSIT is currently the biggest bus line in the Philippines and is one of the biggest in the ASEAN Region.

YELLOW LINE - Panay, Negros, Cebu
they also have selected CERES TOURS in light green color plying Negros and Panay. The yellow line also is the one used for Cubao-Iloilo route but I dunno if this is still being used

BLUE LINE -was launched to serve the Pasay-Batangas-Calapan-Caticlan-Iloilo leg of the Western Philippine Nautical Highway (Strong Republic Nautical Highway)

PURPLE (or INDIGO) LINE - was launched to serve the Bacolod-Dumaguete-Dapitan-Zamboanga leg of the Western Philippine Nautical Highway

Vallacar Transit also have their Mindanao group:
(please correct me if I'm wrong)
RURAL TRANSIT - the Northern Mindanao-CARAGA routes that serve the Dipolog-Iligan-CDO-Butuan-Surigao leg. I think they also serve the Zamboanga Peninsula and parts of Lanao del Norte

BACHELOR EXPRESS - Central and Southern Mindanao routes...Malaybalay-Valencia-Kabacan-Cotabato-Koronadal-Kidapawan-Gen Santos-Digos-Davao

I beg your pardon, Doc. Here's what Vallacar is in South-Central Mindanao, as far as I know.
Vallacar hasn't penetrated the traditional bailiwick of Yap Family's Yellow Bus Lines (YBL) which serves Davao-General Santos-Marbel-Surallah-Tacurong and Isulan area. The other bus company that serve the lucrative Davao-Gensan route is Holiday Bus Lines of Davao.

Rural Transit is the one serving the lucrative Davao-Cagayan de Oro route. Going to Davao del Sur, there are no presence of any Vallacar buses. It is also Rural Transit that serves Cagayan de Oro-Tacurong via Kabacan Cotabato route. Bachelor is more of Davao North-Caraga Region. They also serve Zamboanga Peninsula routes as well.

In Cotabato City, there are only two bus lines: Husky and Weena (People's Line I think is a subsidiary of Weena).

Public works urged to put safety measures at flyover

Tuesday, August 30, 2011

A BACOLOD City lawmaker has urged Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) officials to put safety measures at the newly opened flyover following reports of vehicular accidents in the area.

Five vehicular accidents have occurred at the Lacson-Circumferential flyover in Barangay Bata weeks after it was opened to traffic.

Have something to report? Tell us in text, photos or videos.

These incidents struck the attention of Bacolod City Representative Anthony T. Golez who helped facilitate the realization of the first project.

The flyover was under the President's Bridge Program approved for Bacolod City during the administration of former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

Golez said that there is a need to put up lamp posts at the flyover so that the motorists can be guided on the presence of the flyover in the area.

He said there is also a need to put a reflectorized cats' eye that will also guide motorist taking the flyover.

Motorists who collided at the flyover’s concrete barrier failed to see it, thus there must be a gradual line that will safely lead them to the flyover, Golez said. He suggested that there must have warning signs near and at the flyover.

Golez believes that there is a need to further educate motorists by putting some safety warnings on the use of the flyover.

The public expects an increase in the traffic volume at the flyover and underneath when the north terminal and Ceres bus terminal becomes operational soon. (Carla N. Canet)

ANP opens 21st Bulawan Awards

The Association of Negros Producers has opened its 21st Bulawan Awards, an annual product-design competition participated in by 45 members that brings out the manufacturers’ creativity and craftsmanship in developing new designs, Christine Marie Gaston, Bulawan chairperson, said yesterday.

Gaston said the highlight of ANP this year is the focus on materials like coffee for the food sector competition, moringa (balunggay) for organic and natural sector, and bamboo for hard goods like fashion accessories, garments, furniture, and gifts, toys and house wares.

She said ANP organized the Bulawan Awards to prepare and develop new products to be brought to the Negros Trade Fair on Sept. 28 to Oct. 2 at Rockwell, Manila.

ANP also provided trainings for its members to keep up with their standards and to come up with new designs and ideas that will improve their products, she added.

Meanwhile, Hazel Rivera, ANP business service officer, said winners in the competition will get a 30 percent discounts on their booth rentals at Rockwell.

Rivera said 56 members are joining the trade fair that will bring the Negros produce to Manila.*LTG

Pancake House to step up Yellow Cab expansion (http://www.bworldonline.com/content.php?section=Corporate&title=Pancake-House-to-step-up-Yellow-Cab-expansion&id=37531)

PANCAKE HOUSE, Inc. plans to set up more Yellow Cab outlets in the provinces to take advantage of lower operating costs outside Metro Manila, a ranking official said yesterday when the decision to buy the pizza chain was finalized.

“Metro Manila, where 80% of our business is located, is already congested, and there is a lot of money in the provinces,” Martin P. Lorenzo, Pancake House president and chief executive, said in a press briefing.

The firm behind the namesake restaurant as well as Dencio’s Bar and Brill and Teriyaki Boy yesterday signed a deal to wholly acquire Yellow Cab Food Corp. for P800 million after last week confirming it was in talks for the purchase.

Pancake House sealed loan agreements for the amount with Metropolitan Bank and Trust Co. and its affiliates.

Yellow Cab’s new owners plans to have 40% of its outlets located outside the capital within the next three to five years, Mr. Lorenzo said.

Possible locations for new Yellow Cab stores include Baguio, La Union, Subic, Pangasinan and Cavite.

The cities of Cebu and Bacolod in Visayas are also being considered because of the locations’ strong economic growth and urban development.

Mr. Lorenzo cited Yellow Cab’s brand strength and good fiscal discipline as top reasons for the purchase.

Yellow Cab’s simple look is easily recognizable and appeals to a broad range of consumer aspirational values, he said, while maintaining a virtually debt-free status within a decade of operation.

According to its latest financial statements, Yellow Cab reported a 56% hike in its net income to P31.63 million last year from P20.31 million in 2009.

This, as net sales reportedly grew by 35% to P1.32 billion in 2010 from P979.43 million in 2009.

Take-out orders accounted for half of Yellow Cab’s system sales last year, with more than three-fourths of take-outs being composed of deliveries.

“We view [Yellow Cab] as an established, top-of-mind, premium pizza brand and a profitable business in its own right, yet we also see much more potential for increased synergy in the short-term and sustainable growth over the medium to long term,” Mr. Lorenzo said.

Less than a quarter of current Yellow Cab stores are franchises.

However, Mr. Lorenzo said there is a potential for more franchises, albeit in the provincial areas.

He went on to project an uptick in second-half profits for the entire company with Yellow Cab now under its wing.

Pancake House aims to book P500 million in earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization by yearend, he said.

Pancake House were last traded at P9 apiece on Aug. 15. A one-hour trading halt will be implemented at the start of trading today in line with stock exchange rules. -- FJGDLF

Organic market posts P2.4 million in sales

The Organic Market of the Organik Na Negros! Organic Producers and Retailers Association has generated P2,432,550 total sales from January to July this year from seven agricultural products sold at the market, Ahmon Ledesma of Free Grow said yesterday.

Ledesma said the market started operation in 2007 and since then, customers double every year and the demand for organic food and products doubles as well annually.

The market sells organic rice, vegetables, fruits, root crops, poultry products, pork, and spices all supplied by local organic farmers and ONOPRA members, he said.

Among the products, vegetables have the highest sales with P717,400, then the organic rice with P553,100, spices with P346,500, fruits with P332,750, poultry products with P268,000, root crops with P152,800, and pork with P62,000, he also said.

Ledesma said ONOPRA can meet the consumer demand for organic rice but can only provide 60 to 80 percent of the total demand for organic vegetable.

Farmers have to double their production and they need to campaign and persuade others to go into organic farming because the demand is increasing, he added.

The organic restaurant also has an average monthly gross income of P500,000 with 15 operational staff, he said.

ONOPRA members displaying their produce at the organic market are Alter Trade, BIND, Buro-Buro Springs Vermi Farm, Free Grow, BMAPFA, Fresh Start Organics, Golden Organic Agriculture Venture, Honey Grace Foods, Humayan Ministry, Iliran Tribal Council, La Carlota Organic Coffee Producers, Monchitos, Muad Negros Farm, Inc., and Tabunan Organic Farm.

Azkals to play in Panaad Sept. 13

The Philippine Men’s Football Team, Azkals, will be in Bacolod City on September 13 to play against the Ceres - Negros First Under 23 Suzuki Cup champion team at the Panaad Stadium.

Set to start at 6 p.m., the match between the Azkals and the Negros Under-23 champion team that beat Iloilo during the Suzuki Cup PFF U23 Championship, is expected to draw a large crowd of football-loving Negrenses to the Panaad pitch.

While team composition for both the Azkals and the Ceres-Negros squads is yet to be released, the public are looking forward to see Younghusband brothers Phil and James along with Ilonggos Chieffy Caligdong and Ian Araneta playing together once again.

Early this year, the Azkals caught Bacolod City by storm during their AFC Challenge Cup qualifying playoff home match against the Mongolia Blue Wolves.

Caligdong won the hearts of the Negrenses as he scored the opening goal while fireworks lit the night sky after Phil Younghusband booted in the Philippines’ second goal minutes before the game ended.*NAB

-- FJGDLF

City acts to ensure safety on flyover use

Thursday, September 1, 2011

THE City Government of Bacolod, through the Bacolod Traffic Authority
Office and the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), is implementing measures to ensure safety in the use of the flyover to prevent future accidents.

Bacolod City Mayor Evelio Leonardia said that after the flyover was opened last August 19, there were some incidents that occurred and because of that, a meeting was called last Friday attended by the city, DPWH and traffic management personnel.

Almost all of these accidents involved vehicles from Bacolod going to
Silay because the island that divides the lanes was quite short and could not be seen easily.

Traffic Management Unit head Luisito Acebuche reported that in Friday’s meeting with Engineer Jojo Melgar of the DPWH-Bacolod, he already presented the problem on the Midean island from south going to north.

There were four vehicular accidents at the flyover the past few days and another accident due to mechanical trouble.

One of the solutions that came up is the put up of signage, which would be elevated so it can easily be seen.

“I’ve checked there but they put first reflectorized traffic cones that will guide motorists to safely pass the flyover. One can see it 10 meters from the flyover,” he said.

From the descending portion of the flyover, the DPWH removed the
40 meters of the Midean island and placed a plastic barrier and flower pots to minimize damage to vehicles during accidents.

The North Terminal also asked a U-turn slot but they cannot yet grant
it.

“The U-turn slot is at the Labrava Subdivision until such time that the road is finished.”

The North Terminal will open on September 3.

The U-turn slot from the terminal going to north has three options: to
U-turn under the flyover; from the south, if a vehicle turns back, it will have to proceed to the Labrava area and then U-turn and go back passing the North bound terminal.

He said that when the terminal starts operation, there will be a 24/7 traffic personnel monitoring the use of the flyover.

Vice Mayor Jude Thaddeus Sayson said he already has fears that the
Median island would be a traffic hazard once the flyover was opened.

“It lacks the necessary warning devices. But others were in a hurry to open it; now the things that we want to avoid really happened.”

Leonardia said that if the DPWH has no budget for lightings at the flyover, the city can provide for that. But he believed that the agency still has some money left.

“We expect that DPWH will finish the project completely, including the lights,” Leonardia added. (Carla N. Canet)

Leonardia Prefers Lopue’s East Area for Next Flyover Site
Bacolod City News Bing Leonardia Edith B. Colmo Negros Business Negros Occidental Philippines
By Edith B. Colmo

The Lopue’s East junction is the preferred site by Mayor Evelio Leonardia for the next flyover project, against the proposed Magsaysay-Araneta junction. Traffic is heavier during peak hours at the Lopue’s East area, especially during milling season when the cane and cargo trucks passing left and right.

But, during the meeting of the City Defense Council, Major Luisito Acebuche of the Bacolod Traffic Authority Office revealed that there is a great volume of vehicles plying the Araneta-Magsaysay junction compared to the Circumferential Road-Burgos Street junction at the Lopue’s East corner.

Meanwhile, according to Mayor Leonardia, the DPWH can get the city’s support in terms of proper lighting of the flyover at the Lacson-Circumferential road junction at Brgy. Bata. There were 5 vehicular accidents that happened at the approach of the newly opened fly-over project.

Vice Mayor Jude Thaddeus Sayson said, the city government has always reminded the DPWH about the danger posed by the median island at the approach of the flyover project and it needs steel signs and big reflectors.

Major Acebuche declared that the DPWH has the responsibility over the flyover, while the Philippine National Police is responsible for its men guarding the flyover. He also said, starting September 3, only light vehicles can pass via the flyover. Tricycles and skateboarders will not be allowed to use the flyover, he pointed out.*

ara naman...I think I have to side with major acebuche, the main problem with the east area is the dilapidated highway, when the traffic lights turn green only a few vehicles can go forward because of the condition of the highway, if you hurry across you will just damage your vehicle, the solution here would be to fix the highway first and I mean fix it properly and not by just patching it here and there....the dpwh people are just wasting people's money with the way they do road maintenance, and the circumferential highway is a good example of a never ending nightmare and I can't count anymore how many times they have excavated the old concrete and paved it with new concrete and after just a few month's use cracks would start to appear....maybe we need a complete overhaul of our dpwh.

Actually there are advantages and downsides kung magbutang ka flyover sa East Side. Ang advantage of course maka-help sa perrenial traffic problem sa ina nga area. Ang disadvantage of course are the problematic tricycles and sugarcane trucks. May solution ina. I suggest they palaparun nila ang Burgos kag dira nila ibutang sa intersection ang flyover since most traffic sa East Side dira galabay. :D

By the way, a flyover is meant to carry heavy vehicles like trucks and buses like here sa Metro Manila so indi guid na siya marumpag unless of course may kamala-malahan sa paghimo sina. :)

GOOD MORNING BACOLOD!

Since may KK before nga maybe, ma-open ang Pancake House dira sa The Avenue Suites (unnamed hotel that time the KK came out), this is one interesting article:

Pancake House buys Yellow Cab for P800M (http://www.businessmirror.com.ph/home/companies/15892-pancake-house-buys-yellow-cab-for-p800m)

Basi bala instead of Pancake House, maatubang guid dira sa Shakey's-Lacson, Yellow Cab Pizza-Lacson!:D

Most likely guro migs pero mas "less guilty" mag eat Pizza Hut or Shakeys kesa Yellow Cab....and may Tabasco Sauce sa Pizza Hut....sa Yellow Cab manghagilap ka pa...hehehehehehehehe

ara naman...I think I have to side with major acebuche, the main problem with the east area is the dilapidated highway, when the traffic lights turn green only a few vehicles can go forward because of the condition of the highway, if you hurry across you will just damage your vehicle, the solution here would be to fix the highway first and I mean fix it properly and not by just patching it here and there....the dpwh people are just wasting people's money with the way they do road maintenance, and the circumferential highway is a good example of a never ending nightmare and I can't count anymore how many times they have excavated the old concrete and paved it with new concrete and after just a few month's use cracks would start to appear....maybe we need a complete overhaul of our dpwh.

Haaaay...di gid na da pwede mag flyover on either way...kun magpatindog flyover along CM Hilado over Burgos ano ila ipasaka da? sugarcane truck?...laban sa litik kag buslot ang flyover sina in 5 years time or kita ka pirmi "sugarcane nga nagalupad".:bash:

Kun flover along Burgos over the CM Hilado highway di man manami kay kakitid sang dalan....pati mga commercial areas dira makala sapsapan and pati sidewalk dalahig.....te ano na lang ang Burgos gutok-gutok na gid! :bash:

tutal ga expand naman gid ang Bacolod te dapat didto na sa Araneta ang flyover......mas nami-an ko tani sang flyover from Magsaysay nga naga left turn pa Araneta.....and not that generic parallel bridge ^^

BPO ecozones multiply in Bacolod City

BACOLOD CITY -- The number of economic zones for information technology (IT) firms here and nearby areas has reportedly surged since early 2010, prompting an industry group to vie for a boost in the city’s standing in a yearly list of attractive investment sites.

In the early part of 2010, Bacolod had only less than 10 hectares in presidentially proclaimed IT parks accredited by the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA), said Jocelle Batapa-Sigue, chairman of the Bacolod-Negros Occidental Federation for Information and Communications Technology (BNEFIT).

IT parks are areas wherein industry players can set up to qualify for lower corporate taxes and easier licensing processes.

Since early 2010, there has been several more major IT parks that have been approved by Malacañang, Ms. Batapa-Sigue said.

She said that two more major IT parks were granted presidential proclamations in recent times:the Northpoint Technohub of Ayala Land, Inc. measuring roughly 13 hectares in the neighboring Talisay City and the Two Sanparq building in Brgy. Mandalagan in Bacolod City.

These come on top of nine IT parks totaling some 20 hectares that already have presidential approval: Luxur Plaza IT Centre, Monfort IT Center, San Antonio Park Square, The Block IT Park, Robinsons Cybergate IT Centre, Bacolod Information Technology Park, Lopue’s East IT Center, Lopue’s South IT Center, and St. Francis IT Centre.

Three other IT parks totaling some 40 hectares are meanwhile awaiting Malacañang approval as these have already been accredited by the PEZA, Ms. Batapa-Sigue said, citing Central District IT Park on Lacson St., Grand IT Park on Araneta St. and another operated by SM Investments Corp.

“[There’s] a leap in real estate availability,” Ms. Batapa-Sigue said further.

According to the BNEFIT, the outsourcing industry in Bacolod has generated almost 10,000 direct jobs which translate to annual total salaries of more than P1 billion.

With these developments, Ms. Batapa-Sigue said the BNEFIT is eyeing the top spot for Bacolod in the 2011 evaluation for the country’s Top 10 Next Wave Cities.

In 2009, Bacolod was in fifth place. It moved two notches higher to third spot last year.

“We are confident that this year will even be better because of what has transpired after the 2010 results especially in the area of human capital development and infrastructure…” Ms. Batapa-Sigue said. -- NLG

Must-do things in Bacolod
by Harold Geronimo

When the “ber” month comes, it also means that one of the country’s best festivals is fast approaching. A month from now, the revelry of MassKara Festival officially begins. As of today, most flights, hotels and inns are already fully booked as thousands of foreign and local tourists are expected to flock the city. So you may ask: what else are there to see and do in Bacolod aside from the usual merrymaking? Here are some quick tips on how your visit to the City of Smiles will be more worthwhile and exciting.

1. Visit “The Ruins”

Regarded as the Philippines’ best landmark last year, “The Ruins” in Talisay City is indeed a sight to behold and a picture-perfect destination so hard to resist. The almost century-old structure is a solid remnant of the enduring love affair of Don Mariano Ledesma Lacson with Portuguese Maria Braga whom he met in Hong Kong. The love affair reached its tragic ending with the death of Maria Braga due to an accident. As a proof of his love, Don Mariano built the mansion but was later burned by American forces during the World War II. Today, the concrete structure is what has been left and now known as “The Ruins.” It is one of the 12 most fascinating “Ruins of the World.”

2. Chicken inasal indulgence

They say, you’ve never been to Bacolod if you haven’t eaten the original chicken inasal. Drop by for lunch or dinner at the famous Chicken House, home of Bacolod’s best-tasting inasal. You may also want to try Chicken Deli or if you’re the adventurous type, explore Manukan Country at the Reclamation Area for wider choices of inasal restaurants. Just a tip: Bacolod’s inasal is always best paired with fried garlic rice, and NOT with plain rice. Don’t forget to pour some chicken oil onto your rice too, and use your hands without utensils to appreciate it better. Up to now, no chicken inasal restaurants in Metro Manila or in other provinces can ever rival the taste of the original —only in Bacolod.

3. Silay ancestral house tour

For 22 years, I grew up appreciating the beauty and heritage of the centuries-old ancestral houses of Silay City. Up to now, I always tell my Manila friends not to miss a tour of these historical landmarks just 14 kilometers north of Bacolod. Start the tour at the most popular house-turned-museum known as Balay Negrense and learn a bit of history of Silay. The city has a bunch of old houses scattered all over the city, and you will also enjoy the sights of colonial architecture along Rizal Street. Also, don’t forget to drop by for some souvenir photos in front of San Diego Pro-Cathedral Church, and grab the best guapple pies and bread pudding at the famous El Ideal bakery.

4. Picture-taking in famous landmarks

Since you’re in Bacolod, you should be able to show photos to your friends that you’ve actually set foot to the City of Smiles. First stop is the historic Provincial Capitol Lagoon located in the heart of the city. This is where local folks stroll in the afternoon and kids play especially on weekends. Next stop is the 135-year old Bacolod Cathedral (formerly known as San Sebastian Cathedral) in the downtown area just beside the public plaza. The structure has been damaged by strong earthquakes and fires in the past, but it has remained to be Bacolod’s best-kept historical treasures up to now. Your last stop should be the new Bacolod City Government Center, another picture-perfect edifice which many call as the “White House” of Bacolod.

5. Hop around local coffee shops

Even before Starbucks came to Bacolod, the city is already known for its local coffee shops that offer wide choices of gourmet coffee, teas and desserts. My favorite is Kuppa where unique, relaxing coffee and tea flavors meet great food. The zen-inspired interiors of Kuppa in Capitol Shopping Center make it a perfect place for after-dinner chillout and meeting place with friends. Another must-visit coffee shop is Felicia’s where you can also find some of the city’s best pastries. And of course, don’t ever miss Calea, home of one of the country’s best chocolate cakes. Its new branch in Balay Quince along Lacson Street is now a major tourist attraction. So don’t be surprised if people line up to wait for tables.

MassKara launching today

The MassKara Billboard of Lights will be switched on in ceremonies starting at 6:30 tonight to officially launch the 32nd MassKara Festival, with the theme, “Celebrating the New Icons of Bacolod.”

The billboard is located at the Araneta-Gonzaga side of the plaza.

The switch-on will kick off the countdown to the 19-day festival, which starts October 1, festival director Eli F. J. Tajanlangit said.

The billboard of lights that will illuminate the plaza from today until October is one of the three MassKara installations that the organizers are constructing in the public plaza and the Bacolod City Government Center designed to attract foreign and local tourists, he said.

More attractions will also be put up at the Bacolod public plaza for the festival, Tajanlangit said.

The bandstand will be lighted up, and a regular light show will be switched on every night, at a particular time, he added.

Another MassKara landmark, which will be done by Bacolod artists led by Charlie Co will be set up at the BCGC and will be properly announced in the coming weeks.

These innovations are aimed at repositioning the plaza and bringing back the focus to it as the heart of the festival, he said.

Also during the launch today will be the awarding of winners of the 2010 MassKara Festival photo and video contests. The winners in the video contest are Kieron Tan—champion, Ronnie Diez—first runner-up, and Fiel Efenio—second runner-up. For the photo contest, the winners are Erwin Lim—champion, Jun Trasporto—first runner-up, and Achilles Aeson Anthony Baldevia—second runner-up. Baldevia also won the Special Sponsor’s Award.

The theme, meanwhile, focuses on the new landmarks, structures, institutions, and even personalities that have dramatically transformed Bacolod in recent years, he said.

Festival highlights include Majica MassKara which opens October 7, Feast of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary October 8, Electric MassKara October 14-15, streetdancing competitions October 15-16, MassKara Queen October 17, and Salute to Bacolod (Reception for Balik Bacolod Program) October 18.*

SP to DPWH: Install Lights at the Flyover

By Edith B. Colmo

Councilor Em Ang has resolved in yesterday’s session to request the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), in coordination with the Bacolod City Engineer’s Office and Bacolod Traffic Authority (BTAO)/Traffic Management Unit, to install visible reflectors, signages and adequate lighting, and at the construction of signages and adequate lighting at the Bacolod flyover and other projects.

Ang cited Section 458 (5) (v) and (vi) of Republic Act No. 7160, otherwise known as the Local Government Code of 1991, empowers the Sangguniang Panlungsod to regulate the use of streets, avenues, alleys, bridges, parks and other public places, regulate traffic on all streets and bridges and prohibit encroachments or obstacles thereon.

In order to decongest traffic along the Pepsi Intersection in Barangay Bata, the first flyover in Bacolod City was constructed.

Few days after its inauguration, road mishaps usually happened at night or wee hours of the morning, occurring in succession resulting to damaged vehicles and injured persons.

Ang further cited other public works and road construction projects in the city that need appropriate markings, signages and other devices to warn approaching motorists.

The Department of Public Works and Highways, the City Engineer’s Office and the Bacolod Traffic Authority Office/Traffic Management Unit are the government agencies capable of maintaining safety and order in government infrastructures including the flyover.

The said Resolution urges the DPWH, the City Engineer’s Office and the Bacolod Traffic Authority Office/Traffic Management Unit to maintain orderliness and prevent our flyover from the risk of accidents.*

THE Metro Bacolod Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MBCCI) will recognize and reward the best performing businesses in Negros Occidental during the 20th Visayas Area Business Conference and Expo from September 16-17.

MBCCI president Frank Carbon said the award will also celebrate the success and acknowledge the vital role of awardees in the development of the economy in the province.

The awards will be given in three categories: the Exemplary Award, Model
Entrepreneur Award and the New Investor Award.

Those who will be honored for their exemplary contributions to the Negros economy include: Atty. Simplicio Palanca, president of the Bacolod Real Estate and Development Corporation (Bredco) for providing the gateway to Bacolod City and the province as well through the reclamation project which he started in 1961.

Despite the controversies, Palanca succeeded to reclaim 250 that now housed a wharf and port facilities for local and international vessels.

Dr. Ricardo B. Yanson Sr. is also one of the exemplary awardees.

The business acumen of spouses, Ricardo and Olivia, realized the emergence from one jeepney unit to what is now The Yanson Group of Bus Companies (YGBC) – traversing the routes of Visayas, Mindanao and a part of Luzon, comprising more than 9,000 employees and featuring the best facilities for bus maintenance and manufacturing.

Emulating the footsteps of their parents, the children have also been successful in the respective businesses they are engaged in.

The families of the late governor Alfredo Montelibano Sr., late Benjamin Lopue Sr., late Fernando Gonzaga, late Dr. Antonio Lizares, late Don Generoso Villanueva will also get awards.

The model entrepreneur award, meanwhile, will be given to Herbanext president Paul Felipe Cruz; CM and Sons Food Products (Merci Bakeshop) president Jonathan Lo; Bacolod Capitol Hill Land Devt. Corp. (888 Chinatown Square) president William Ong; Bongbong Villan Corp. president Reynaldo Villan and Lourdes C Group of Companies president Roseller Ciocon.

The new investor award will be given to Alliance Call Center, PanAsiatic Call Centers Inc., Teletech Holdings Inc., Shorecloud Corp., Convergys Philippines Corp., Teleperformance-Bacolod and Transcom Worldwide Philippines Inc.

A special citation, on the other hand, will be handed to the Negros Japan Human Resource Exchange Association Inc.

Azkals vs Ceres-Negros U23 on Sept. 13

Thursday, September 1, 2011

ONE of the much-awaited matchups in Philippine football will push through.

The Philippine Men's Football Team-Azkals will be going up against the Philippine Football Federation (PFF)-Suzuki Cup U23 National Cup champion Ceres-Negros Team at 6 p.m. of September 13 at the Panaad Park and Stadium in Barangay Mansilingan, Bacolod City.

The said match was officially announced during a meeting held at the Luxur's Place, which was attended by team managers, coaches and team representatives of the 16 participating clubs in the upcoming 1st Negros First Men's Open Football tournament.

Match Commissioner Warren Concepcion said the Azkals-Ceres Negros Team clash will highlight the opening ceremony of this first men's open tourney in the province.

Prior to the main event, a match between the Bacolod United and the Real Negrense Football Club (FC) will also be played, Concepcion added.

Tickets worth P200, P100 and P50 will be available at the venue on game day. The proceeds will be used to help PFF in its trust to strengthen the football program in the country.

Among the 16 teams seeing action in the 1st Negros First Men's Open include Group A led by San Carlos FC, Bacolod United, Pontevedra FC, Sagay City FC, Las Buenas FC, Magallon FC, Kabankalan City FC and Bago City FC; while Group B has Real Negrense FC, Ceres Liner Football Team, Himamaylan City FC, La Carlota FC, Talisay City FC, Don Bosco Alumni FC and Cadiz City FC.

Concepcion explained that the seeding of San Carlos FC, Bacolod United, Real Negrense FC and Ceres Liner Football Team was based on the history of the teams in terms of their active participation in various local and national tournaments for the past several years.

On the other hand, Executive Assistant IV and Provincial Sports coordinator Angel 'Nonong' Verdeflor earlier said that the Azkals will also hold its camp from September 8-15 at the Panaad Park and Stadium.

This was also confirmed by Azkals Team coordinator Patrick Ace Bright.

The said camp, which will be headed by national team head coach Hans Michael Weiss, intends to scout new breed of players from the provinces to boost the national team in the upcoming South East Asian Games (SEAG) in Indonesia this November, as well as in future international competitions.

This activity is also part of the PFF goal to provide a venue for local talents to be scouted by national coaches. (JSG)
