Guv optimistic on sugar prices

| More |
Thursday, November 3, 2011

NEGROS Occidental Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr. is optimistic that the price of locally produced sugar will go up while milling continues.

"For so long as there is no smuggling, I'm sure that our sugar will enjoy good price," he said.

Marañon revealed that prices of sugar (from Class A to D) are now pegged at approximately P1,260 per LKg (50-kilo bag) and are expected to increase in the coming months.

"Every start of the milling season, sugar quality is not that good, especially because of the rainy season. But quality is expected to peak from January to the following months when the rainy season is over," he said.

"Smuggling is one of the factors that hurt the price of our locally produced sugar. Hopefully smuggling could be minimized or be stopped completely," he added.

Marañon admitted that the price of sugar this year could not be as competitive like last crop year's prices when it has reached to more than P2,000 per LKg.

"It was artificial. It was due to the greediness of some traders. Some hoarded their quedans and many were trapped after the prices of sugar went down in the market," he said. (TED)

San Carlos wins int’l awards as 1 of top most livable cities
BY CARLA GOMEZ

San Carlos City in Negros Occidental won an international gold award and a special award as a first-time entry in the United Nations-backed annual International Awards for Livable Communities given in Seoul, South Korea, last week, San Carlos Mayor Gerardo Valmayor said yesterday.

San Carlos City was one of the elite group of cities that fulfilled the award’s criteria covering environmental best practice, healthy lifestyle of cities and community involvement, LivCom announced on its website at www.livcomawards.com/2011.

The LivCom awarded project entry dubbed “City of San Carlos: The Livable Community in Northeast Negros-Philippines” has highlighted the role of the City Government of San Carlos and San Carlos Development Board, a multi-sectoral non-profit, business organization serving as the keeper of San Carlos Master Development Plan in collaboration and partnership with Julio and Florentina Ledesma Foundation Inc., a press release from San Carlos City said.

The project entry of San Carlos emphasized that it is a City of Renewable Energy, being the investment destination of RE-industries in Negros Island; and the Capital of Earth Construction in the Philippines advocating the application of San Carlos Enviro-blox – an environment- friendly earth-based construction technology as a trademark of the City’s infrastructure initiatives particularly for its social housing-land tenure security initiative and public school building construction activities, the press release said.

The multi-awarded solid-waste management project and other environmental best practices such as the San Carlos Water Levy Project were also integrated into the San Carlos LivCom Award Whole City Project entry, it added.*CPG

another suggestion for the city gov't supposedly need to privatize is the operation of towing services. just take a look on every corner/shoulder of the city streets is that private vehicles were occupying the "no parking" spaces sign and don't care at all the difficulties/obstructions they created. kag ang BTAO towing truck naman ya daw mga lipong nga gusaw nga ga agi-agi lng kag trisikad lng ang gina diskitahan, although what they're doing is okay man tani pero selective implementation lng ugaling, but when it comes to big fishes such as what i've mentioned hadlok naman sila.

I think the point of privitization is indi nga ang pumuluyo ang magbayad, syempre taxes man gihapon ang ibayad diri, but the contractors will ink a deal with the city government and payments are taken from the city budget. Ang difference lang is that the government will no longer handle the operations and management of collecting garbage. All they will do is pay and hold the contractors accountable. Less ang overhead kun sa business pa kay gin outsource na ang ini nga "non-core" function. This is a very good move kun madayon.

Lopues stores outside Bacolod do not carry the name Mall rather they call it "Value Store" ...:) even small tiangges will benefit on Lopues presence kay indi na sila mag pa Bacolod just to buy their goods to sell ...:)

TRO Mall, RPB and Gaisano aside, the first building that is a category of a full-service mall is Plaza Mart, actually the first in WV man. ;) A technical def. of mall is an area w/ diff. shops of wide variety products so Lopue's East is a Mall albeit gamay lang guid.

Our idea of a mall is a single building with a big lobby along which shops, restaurants, supermarkets, etc are located. In the USA, malls (strip malls) are made up of several buildings which may not even have a common lobby and shops are most likely directly accessible to the parking area. Lopue's Mandalagan would be an example of an American style strip mall.

San Carlos Borromeo feast

MANILA, Philippines — Friday is the feast of San Carlos (Saint Charles) Borromeo, the patron saint of seminarians as well as of several schools, towns, seminaries, and parishes in the country. In San Carlos City, Negros Occidental, a concelebrated thanksgiving mass in honor of their patron will be held at 10 a.m. at the St. Charles Borromeo Cathedral.

Yes mig after all the bad news about our country, at last a breath of fresh air suddenly came. Kudos to the people of San Carlos City, Negros Occidental.

^^ Migs, can you PM me here or sa FB about the bad news... Idea lang para ma check ko man sa google... hehehehe wala na guid ko ya abi balita sa mga kung anetch anetch ah... haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay...

^^ Pero Truly, proud guid ako sa SCC... yey! :)

Hello everyone!!! been on this thread for quite sometime, enjoying the little things that's you guys kept on posting. my day won't be complete w/out scanning the latest updates everyone's trying to contribute. kudos to all of you...

^^ Welcome to the Thread Migs... please feel free to share good or even Bad news to the thread (but we prefer good of course, i know right?) GO GO GO FOR THE GOLD!!! :)

I don't know much about the program in Negros about raising sheep but kung gaistar kamo nayun lapit sa area sang Panaad, damo na da karnero. Ang mga karnero gaintra sa mga baka, kanding, kabayo kag karbao magharab sang hilamon sa dira nga area sang Panaad.

Migs, sa Oriental side especially in Uptown Siaton, Sta. Catalina and Bayawan, damu damu na guid to sheeps ya... as in maglabay ka gani sa Highway ara pa sila naga labay man sa dalan... hehehe same man sa North Cities of Guihulngan and Canlaon as well as sa Vallehermoso... dira naman ya sa Occidental, sa DSB, Uptown La Carlota, Murcia, Pontevedra, La Castellana, Sagay, Escalante and Calatrava towns naman ya gin distribute ang mga Sheep kag ginapadamu... so truly, soon enough, aside from being the SAUDI of the Philippines, with the Presence of the Cattles and Sheeps in the Province, basi dugay dugay ang Bantyag sa aton, AUSTRALIA and NEW ZEALAND of the Philippines naman... WOW!!!:lol::lol::lol::lol:

Why do I have the strong feeling that Lopue's Murcia would actually be like a mercado nga ginpasosyal w/ aircon rather than a typical mall? I don't know if this is going to be good or bad basta mas convenient na ni sa mga taga Murcia and ang mapa-Mambukal.

well mig normal lang na na feeling.:lol: base mo na lang sa mga Bacolod projects sang Lopues. Plus ang mga outside BCD projects nila. :)

^^ Good thing about Lopues, even though their Projects arent that impressive, importante dira is they are bringing common goods to the people na indi na sila dapat mag palayu pa para lang makapamakal sila sang mga basic necessities nila... a good example of a fair development that has been happening around the province... meaning, 70% or more of Bacolod City's income is purely generated from the residents living within the City and the 30% gain comes from the people who do either business or leisure in the city... kay ang mga taga Kabankalan and San Carlos subong indi na magpa-Bacolod just to shop kay may ara na to sila ya sang mga Full-service malls, as well as other cities and towns na may Lopues na like Hinigaran, La Carlota, Silay, Victorias and Sagay... but damu man gyapon gapa Bacolod either to watch Movies or to party or the likes... amo ni ang nanamian ko sa Negros ya kay bisan mga taga Hinobaan kis-a kadto pa sa bacolod para mag party lang then puli lang pagka aga sa Hinobaan balik... hahahhaaha :)

agree ...:)

same sentiments here ...:) welcome gali migs sa thread ...:)

same thoughts here ...:)

I think Bacolod Plaza Mart Center Mall is already a FULL-SERVICE Mall since the early 60's since it already has several shops, restos, supermarkets and even cinemas to cater the locals... and it is actually a trendsetter in its own rights... maybe one of the earliest FULL SERVICE MALL in the country pa na gani ang Plaza Mart Center Mall... :) -- BASI LANG NA YA HA... i need verifications pa... :)

Q2 exports post 203% growth in Western Visayas

A report furnished by the Bureau of Customs (BoC) to the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) showed that during the previous quarter, this region's exports amounted to $ 164.525 million through its major seaports as against the $ 54.319 million in the same period last year.

The port of Iloilo had the biggest export in terms of amount at $ 124.815 million while the sub-port of Pulupandan had $ 39.710 million. However, the sub-port of Pulupandan posted the highest growth at 350 percent as against the 174 percent growth at the Iloilo port.

The over-all increase was recorded at 203 percent, according to Estela Paredes, chief of the Knowledge Management Division (KMD) of NEDA.

The region’s major export products include coal by the Semirara Coal Plant in Antique; raw cane sugar; and crab meat, among others.

source (http://www.pna.gov.ph/index.php?idn=&sid=&nid=&rid=383153)

^^wow...negros occ alone accounts for almost 25% of total exports for WV and we are next to antique as the region's top dollar earner. i wonder how much coal does the one in semirara produce? not bad figures for our port that serves the need of ONLY ONE PROVINCE.:banana::banana::banana:

Na learn na ya migs sang Negros Occidental to help itself and cope up with the competition...kun sang una monocrop kita ...subong nag diversify na. We evolved from the old and traditional

remember in the heyday of sugar..Negros Occidental produces almost 50% of the country's export earnings....it just shows nga indi madula ang Negros Occidental basta money and trade

All ports in the Province of Negros Occidental are sub-ports of the Port of Pulupandan. That in itself is surprising since it was the lean months of sugar production yet it posted 25% of the exports. It means there must be a lot of sugar and also of demand as well.

THE decision of the Commission on Audit (COA) on the controversial lease and purchase of the 7.7-hectare Capitol property by Ayala Land Inc. may be finally known on November 10.

Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr., who has expressed optimism on COA approval of the controversial land deal, said COA is set to hold an en banc deliberation of the land deal on November 10.

San Carlos wins int’l awards as 1 of top most livable cities (http://www.visayandailystar.com/2011/November/03/topstory5.htm)

It was an honor for San Carlos City to win as one of the world’s most livable cities of 2011 from among 77 finalist cities from 26 countries, including some from the richest first world counties, he told the DAILY STAR.

Not only did San Carlos win the Whole City Awards 2011 gold along with Tongueong City, South Korea, in Category C (population of 75,001 to 150,000), it was the only one to get the special award among the 77 finalist cities from 26 countries.*CPG

not much to comment na ko da ah...ma yuhum yuhum na lang ko ya kay seeing it as a whole "coconut shell", it shows that despite the limited facilities of our port and our shallow seacoasts, we are growing and moving forward with our exports and trade. Ang importante ga kita aton province....and yes...Negros is saving up for a "rainy day".....in all these years of abundance, we should be ready for the "lean years" and hard times just like in the 1980's

Good strategy of Lopues IMO, ang ila Murcia branch saluron gid nila ang mga customers from upland including DSB, no need to go to the big city para mangumpra...:cheers2:

TESDA sets P50M for Bacolod BPO training
BY LISA GAPAC

The Technical Education Skills and Development Authority has allotted about P50 million for training of call center agents in Bacolod City, P25 million of which has already been invested in ongoing projects.

This is because Bacolod City has been chosen as one of the Next Wave Cities in the Philippines, TESDA Secretary Joel Villanueva said last night.

Thirty-six farmers in Brgy. Agboy, Candoni, Negros Occidental, will graduate next week from the training on field school for rice production using the PalayCheck system.

The monastery stands on a 12-hectare property donated by the Montelibano family in 2004. It has a livelihood center that helps people in the community engage in income-generating projects, and it aims to establish an Agricultural Institute that would provide good quality Christian education, offer regular high school courses with emphasis in agriculture, and hands-on training on modern farming techniques.

Guv pushes for conclusion of rebel peace pact

GOVERNOR Alfredo Marañon Jr. supports the move of President Benigno Aquino’s administration to forge a final peace agreement with the Revolutionary Proletarian Army-Alex Bongcayao Brigade (RPA-ABB).

"The agreement must be closed -- the sooner, the better. It would be not only for the province but for entire country as well," Marañon said.

^^there can be no real progress unless there is true peace. its really about time that we put an end to their useless struggle.

A struggle which claimed too many innocent lives. Not to mention the economic drawback it brought the entire Negros island in the past decade. With Negros' economic performance as one of the country's best, i think now is the perfect timing to finally give peace that lasting chance.

I think Lopues has no plans to match SM or Robs and neither Gaisano but IMO,they have made wiser a decision in investing in a new location in Negros. They could help lessen the number of people traveling to Bacolod for thier basic needs.Clearly they're heading towards a different direction. However,we just have to be that Lopues is still alive and kicking.

they are just living with their statement "BRINGING THE MARKET CLOSER TO THE PEOPLE"

Just like AMAR, Lopue's needs to survive the competition...and by moving to the component cities and towns, they are bringing progress to other parts of the province and indi lang sa Bacolod. Indi man sila piyerde dira. I think Bacoilod has enough Lopue's Stores, all they need is to "level-up" their looks since quality and ambiance now counts with shoppers. Pati pamatyag nga manami pwede na ma baligya sa Bacolodnon and indi como barato lang pirmi la na labot sa department store..

but it wasn't that bloodless as what the popular belief is said since the "Northern Forces" of Lacson fought off resistance somewhere at the banks of Mandalagan River (Visita de Madalagang) and there was exchange of gunfire and bolos ^^
The article was actually pertaining to the takeover of the revolucionarios of the Silay garrison from the Spaniards. It was bloodless since the garrison commander surrendered without a fight however the initial Bacólod resistance by the Spaniards is another story.

The intervention of the University in TUP Visayas campus started with the Letter of Instruction (LOI) No. 79 issued by President Ferdinand E. Marcos on December 28, 1978 authorizing TUP to administer the operation of the then Visayas Technician Institute. In 1985, pursuant to TUP Implementing Order No. 85-15, the Visayas Technician Institute was renamed the TUP Visayas campus. Presently, TUP Visayas is situated in Talisay City, Negros Occidental with two branches located in Sagay City and Cadiz City. Currently, the academic offerings of TUP Visayas campus are in the 3-year technology courses, bachelor's degree, and masters degree in Technology.

Social Networking has been a stigma that started in my very generation where the world wide web cemented communications. The need to connect back home has been a thirst quenched by social networking sites like Facebook. Negrénses are one of the groups of people that subscribe avidly to social networking being a very sociable in nature.

Taiwan company eyes factory in Negros

A TAIWAN company is interested in putting up a factory for office supplies in Negros Occidental.

Negros Occidental Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr. is leaving for Taiwan last week of November, along with other three mayors of local government units that were identified as probable sites for the said factory.

The areas being considered are Sagay, EB Magalona, San Enrique and Murcia.

But Marañon said that Murcia Mayor Andrew Montelibano will not be able to go with them in Taiwan.

The governor added that the investor is eyeing to put up a factory at the export-processing zone.

He said such factory is a big opportunity that is expected to provide employment and other businesses in the province. (Teresa Ellera-Dulla)

A Taiwanese company interested in setting up a manufacturing plant in the Philippines is eyeing four potential economic zones in Negros Occidental for its site, Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. said yesterday.

The Taiwanese firm, Danny and Hudson Inc., produces office supplies and bags for the National Book Store and for export to Japan and the United States.

The firm’s plant in China produces 200 container vans of products a month, the governor said.

The firm will choose a site from four potential areas – EB Magalona, Murcia and San Enrique towns and Sagay City, the governor said.

The governor is set to visit Taiwan from November 28 to December 1. Invited along with him to visit Taiwan are the mayors of the three towns and one city.

The agricultural extension workers of the three LGUs have also been nominated for the top performing AEWs, Edna Garde, manager of the Farmer’s Information and Technology Services Center of the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist yesterday said.

Tchoukball gains ground in Bacolod

Team Philippines beat defending champion and Asia powerhouse Singapore, 32-31, in the final game to capture the crown in the 2nd Southeast Asia Tchoukball Championships in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam.

He said the victory in Vietnam augurs well for the country’s hosting of the 5th Asia Pacific Tchoukball Championships slated on August next year at the West Negros University Gym in Bacolod City.

At least 15 to 19 countries are expected to join in the APTC event with more than 500 delegates coming over to visit Bacolod, Montalbo said, as he appealed for support from the City Government of Bacolod and the Provincial Government of Negros Occidental.

Admitting that most people are not yet aware of what tchoukball is, Montalbo and the other officers of the PTF, invited the public to watch and participate in various tchoukball clinics they are conducting in the province.

Benjie Oray, member of the men’s team that won the championship in Vietnam, said an Inter-Color Tchouckball Tournament will be held today at the Panaad Stadium.

Joining in the one day competition at the Panaad are the eight teams from different groups that have availed of free tchoukball clinic conducted by the PTF in Bacolod City, Oray said.

THE Escalante Public and Private School Teachers and Employees Multi-purpose Cooperative (EPSTEMPCO) is this year’s winner in the medium service category of the National Wages Productivity Commission’s (NWPC) Productivity Olympics.

The San Rafael Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries Multi-Purpose Cooperative of Murcia, Negros Occidental, meanwhile, received a special citation for its productivity initiatives in the areas of business excellence and people management during the awarding ceremony in Manila last Thursday.

The two from the province were the only entries from Western Visyas that made it to the top 25 finalists trimmed down from the initial 63 regional nominees received by the NWPC when it launched the competition November last year.

Sugar shipped to 7 countries

It certainly is welcome news. The latest from SRA administrator Ma. Regina Bautista Martin that the country has shipped sizeable amounts of sugar to several other countries other than just the United States, but also to Indonesia, Japan, Taiwan, Taiwan(?), and Vietnam.

That means the sugar trade offensive launched by Martin has proven effective in biting into areas that had never used to buy local sugar.

That may explain the sights last week of thousands of heavily loaded cane trucks merrily wind their way through the Southern Negros highway to Biscom, La Carlota, and the other mill in Kabankalan City.

As far as the eye could see, there were hundreds of loaded cane trucks parked along the highway and in the parking areas of Binalbagan-Isabela Sugar Company.

The waiting cane trucks were parked along the highway as far as Himamaylan City. And more kept coming. Of course, drivers must have been frustrated with the long wait for their time to be given the go-signal to pour their heavy loads into Biscom.

Dugang naman ni sa exports sang Negros Occ. ang REAL exports lang ha.. ;)

Taiwanese eyeing ecozones
BY CARLA GOMEZ

Sagay City has a Philippine Economic Zone Authority-approved economic zone, while the other local governments are in the process of setting theirs up.*CPG

Copra
Handicraft
Furniture

Hopefully next time microchips production naman.]Taiwanese eyeing ecozones
BY CARLA GOMEZ

Sagay City has a Philippine Economic Zone Authority-approved economic zone, while the other local governments are in the process of setting theirs up.*CPG

^^oh, c'mon @doc...hehe. ikaw pa maulihi sa amo ni nga trivia? she said it herself...

Gawad Kalinga has been all about "building homes, building dreams," said Salonga, who traces her roots to Pulupandan, Negros Occidental. She said her mother, Ligaya Alcantara Imutan, was the daughter of Leo Imutan, a vice mayor of Pulupandan town who briefly took over as mayor. And the statue of a woman carrying a "bilao (basket)" on her head in the Pulupandan town plaza is that of her grandmother, Carmen Alcantara Imutan, according to Salonga.
