RepublicaNegrense December 16th, 2011, 11:05 AM FB Post of Ina Ramos from Comer.cio...
Due to very much unfavorable weather conditions, with much regret, the organizers of COMER.CIO, have decided to postpone the food bazaar for everyone's convenience and safety. The Comercio bazaar will be scheduled to a later date Dec 27-29 same venue same time. The dates are perfect since more people are here for the holidays, no classes, and it will be also a venue where people can shop goodies for new year's eve. We're cooking up something even better to make up for this unfortunate event. We are very sorry for such abrupt changes, but we believe it is what is best given the present condition. Happy holidays and see you all :)
This is good since I'll be there na by that time. :D

At least its better be called a rip-off of a famous hotel in Dubai than to be noted as a "dead-ringer" for the COKIN APARTMENT BUILDING of Lopez Jaena-Libertad or the tenement housing in STA. MESA, or maybe a "rip-off" of the St. Therese Columbarium :lol::lol:

bacolodchamp December 17th, 2011, 03:00 AM Neg. Occ. tops domestic tourism, food major attraction, guv says
BY CARLA GOMEZ
Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. yesterday said the National Statistics Office has ranked Negros Occidental as the top destination in the Visayas in 2010 of domestic tourists, and he hopes to further boost this by promoting the culinary delights the province has to offer.
The governor, who led the opening of the 6 th Negros Island Organic Farmer's Festival in Bacolod City, noted that domestic tourism in many developed countries have become their engines of growth, with foreign tourists as an added bonus.
In fact, nationally acclaimed chefs visiting Negros Occidental for the organic festival who went to Sagay City this week were impressed by the seafood it has to offer, and were given tips on making “kinilaw” by local restaurateur Enting Lobaton, he added.
The NSO report quoted by Marañon in stressing the potential for culinary tourism in Negros Occidental, showed that based on the 2010 House hold Survey on Domestic Visitors there were about 23.1 million Filipinos, aged 15 years old and above, who travelled within the country from April to September last year.
Negros Occidental topped the list of areas in the Visayas frequently visited by domestic tourists, followed by Cebu, Iloilo, Leyte, Capiz and Negros Oriental, the governor noted.

bacolodchamp December 17th, 2011, 03:55 AM Start-up funds sought from DA for local farmers to go organic
Organic farmers of Negros Occidental are asking the Department of Agriculture to provide start up capital and financial assistance to small farmers who want to diversify into organic farming.
"The province of Negros Occidental is advanced when it comes to organic farming and many farmers from other provinces are coming to Negros to learn our faming systems,” Henares said.
Meanwhile, the Farmers Information and Technology Services Center of the Office of the Provincial Agriculturists has recorded 51 tours with 5,011 assisted tourists who visited organic farms agri-tourism sites for 2011.
She said the influx of visitors in the province means organic agriculture is the key to agri tourism, adding that visitors really come to learn through the organic farms in Negros .
Local organic farms have also generated revenues and funds that help them improve their farming facilities, landscape, and technologies, she added.
The most visited farms and agri-tourist destinations in 2011 based on OPA figures, are the farms of Ramon Peñalosa in Victorias and Manapla, Eco-Agri/RU Foundry of Ramon Uy Sr. in Brgy. Pahanocoy, Bacolod City, and Fresh Start Organics of Ramon Uy Jr. in Silay City .
Other tourism destinations are Buro Buro Farms of Pamela Henares in Concepcion, Talisay, and Alternative Indigenous Development Foundation headed by Auke Idzenga in Brgy. Mansilingan, Bacolod . *LTG

Bo B December 17th, 2011, 10:49 AM It is so sad to see pictures of the devastation caused by floods in CDO and Iligan cities. It seems that floods nowadays can happen to any city in any location. Even Switzerland has experienced severe flooding back in 2005. Bacolod's somewhat higher elevation is no longer a guarantee that we will be able to escape a similar disaster.

La Carlota City was recently cited by the Department of the Interior and Local Government as one of the top performing cities in the country for 2010 for "initiating and implementing programs designed to improve the lives of their constituents, environment protection, financial accountability and commitment to transparency". The recognition was given to 10 provinces, 10 mayors of highly urbanized and independent componet cities and 10 component cities for their performance in these key areas of governance.
The other outstanding component cities are: Ligao (Albay), Laoag (La Union), San Fernando, Vigan, Gingoog, Cabanatuan, Dipolog, Iriga and Batac.
DILG Secretary Jesse M. Robredo complimented the Local Government Units for their performance. "I laud these local governments for their commitment in elevating and maintaining the highest standards of public service delivery in their respective localities. I hope that their shining examples will inspire others to strive hard in the performance of their duties," he said.

NegOcc more attractive to domestic tourists (http://www.panaynewsphilippines.com/mainnews%201.htm)
BY RANIE S. AZUE
BACOLOD City – Cebu may be the most progressive of all places in the Visayas and Boracay Island may have the whitest beach, but Negros Occidental remains the most attractive to local tourists.
Known for years as the “Sugar Bowl of the Philippines” for being the biggest producer of sugar, Negros Occidental had the most number of domestic tourist arrivals last year, revealed Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr.
Even nearby Iloilo, the regional center of Western Visayas, did not attract as much local tourists, he said, citing the records of the National Statistics Office (NSO).
Based on NSO’s Household Survey on Domestic Visitors from April to September, 23.1 million Filipinos aged 15 years old and above traveled across the country and they mostly visited Negros Occidental among other destinations in the Visayas.
Cebu was merely their second choice destination, followed by Iloilo, Leyte, Capiz and Aklan where the world-renowned Boracay Island is located.
Marañon said Negros Occidental’s natural wonders make it attractive, but its friendly and hospitable people are also a delight to visitors.
Negros Occidental also has lots of delicious food that make visitors return again and again, the governor added.
In fact, said Marañon, he wants to develop “culinary tourism” in Negros Occidental.
The governor wants Negros known as the “Organic Food Bowl of Asia.”/PN

@dark spirit December 17th, 2011, 05:52 PM Bigger, better BacoLaodiat fest next month (http://www.panaynewsphilippines.com/bacolod%203.htm)
BACOLOD City – This city is gearing for the BacoLaodiat Festival, or the Chinese New Year celebration here, on January 20 to 23.
The festival will welcome the Year of the Dragon, the fifth animal in the 12-year cycle of the Chinese Zodiac.
With the theme “A majestic spirit in a challenging year,” the 2012 BacoLaodiat Festival hopes to highlight the culture of the Chinese through the following:
* a grand parade
* cultural performances
* lantern dance competition
* food stalls
* display of life-sized Zodiac animals; and
* nightly symphony of lights and sparks.
BacoLaodiat comes from the words “Bacolod” and “Lao Diat” – a Fookien word for “celebration.”
The event is meant to highlight significant ties that bind the Filipinos and the Chinese, and the spectacles and flavors of China.
The festival is also opening its registration for the Dragon Lantern Contest.
Winning groups will receive cash prizes and their works will be displayed at the Bacolod Government Center.
The organizers, led by festival chairman Leonito Lopue of the BacoLaodiat Incorporated, hopes to present a more meaningful and bigger festival. (PIA-6/PN)

MOVE OVER, BORACAY…
In fact, said Marañon, he wants to develop “culinary tourism” in Negros Occidental.

here are some of our warnings and explanations on the afternoon until the night of Dec.16:
Even if the sun is shining bright with clear skies, once PAGASA raises a Signal Number 2 in your area, expect that within 24 hours you will experience winds of more than 60 kph but not more than 100 kph.
We would like to reiterate that a Public Storm Warning Signal does not give you a stormy weather right at the instant. It just warns of the areas ahead of the storm to prepare. Yan ang mahirap sa Pilipino kasi they want to wait for the rains and winds before thay are convinced that a storm is coming
We would like to have the residents all over Mindanao to be alert on flash floods and landslides since the Central, Southern and Western provinces of Mindanao are not accustomed to passage of typhoons and tropical storms. The uncommon occurence of typhoons in Mindanao resulted in a high number of deaths (631 people) and widespread damage over the a large part of island during the passage of Typhoon TITANG in 1970. so those in steep slopes, large rivers and narrow creeks, please take precaution.
SENDONG now moving WNW at 22 kph and is targeting landfall over Boston, Davao Oriental, along the Cateel Bay or at Bislig City, Surigao del Sur at sundown today. the rainclouds has increased in diameter but still on an 85-100 kph wind velocity
forecast track will pass thru northern part of Davao del Norte and Compostela Valley, thru Bukidnon, western part of Misamis Oriental near Cagayan de Oro City, Iligan Bay and south of Dapitan and Dipolog Cities
Expect rains to come and go as interaction thru the Agusan Marsh and Bukidnon Plateau will weaken SENDONG to a Tropical Depression within 6-12 hrs. With this the rains will become more scattered and lighter than its intial ones. But intermmitent rains could still continue and cause floods. It will pass thru Bukidnon tonight and near Cagayan de Oro towards Iligan Bay post midnight.
The Sierra Madre has long been protecting Luzon but still typhoons cross the island and leave a trail of destruction. So those high mountains itself doesn't give you assurance. Mindanao was devastated by a small single typhoon in 1970 and none until now (Nitang in 1984 devastated Surigao, Agusan and Camiguin). Depressions lang halos ang laging dumadaan so it has not yet been observed on how the mountains of Davao Oriental and the Compostela Valley could bear the brunt of a strong typhoon directly making landfall over that area. Yun ang nakakatakot mangyari. So I hope everyone should heed warning signals on typhoons and don't take these things lightly.
CDO is going to take the direct hit of SENDONGS dense core :ohno:
sorry for the OT but it was really so sad to see the event unfolding before your eyes :ohno:
churvalou6900 December 18th, 2011, 08:24 AM That's fine Dockie,we share the grief of the nation knowing that this is a special month for our country. Its Christmas Season and I can imagine how hard it is for our kababayan.

Friday night I frantically searched for your number and motty's (which I didn't have) when the 9PM and 10 PM bulletins and forecasts came out which showed SENDONG zeroing in Cagayan de Oro City. Thats why I posted on your FB and motty's too to let me know. Thank God you guys are OK. :okay:

Kuya, it was my first time to experience bagyo na sa amin talaga tumama and it was one hell horrifying experience. I was in my bedroom and it was eerie to hear the sounds of the very strong rain and wind.

Kaya nga I was quite worried with you guys there in CDO, kasi bihira lang ang bagyo dyan so I know not everyone could have prepared. Concern ko din kasi kayo ni mom mo sa Tagoloan since may malaking ilog din doon.
Yes mic, we have been there too...many times. Classmates who lost their houses and relatives in Typhoon NITANG in 1984, 24 hours of pounding winds and no electricity for almost 2 months after Typhoon RUPING in 1990...Holding on our roof for 15 minutes but unfortunately it was blown away by Typhoon PEPANG in 1995...getting sick, stranded in Aklan for 10 days and almost losing my friend and cousins including my precious belongings in Iloilo during Typhoon FRANK in 2008...those are the images of typhoons that will be always on my mind. And we are glad we made it through. That's why It has been always mine and maybe every Negrenses' experience that drives us to help others in many ways...sending out warnings, comforting those in need and sending a part of ours to help others who lost theirs.:)

I've also experienced a lot of monster storms too specially when we lived in Masbate for several years where it was struck by intense typhoons before. And also that 24 hour horror expereince of Supertyphoon Ruping in Cebu and the strongest I've ever experienced in Taipei when I saw part of a building made of cement was blown away.

NFA NegOcc assures enough rice supply
by Easter Anne D. Doza
NEGROS OCCIDENTAL, Dec. 17 (PIA) -- The National Food Authority in Negros Occidental assured that there is enough supply of rice for the holiday season.
NFA-Negros Occidental Assistant Provincial Manager Jobe Chua said there is no problem in terms of supply of NFA rice this holiday season.
“Right now, we have enough supply of rice at NFA. If we take a look at our daily requirement, we can last up to 12 days if it is only NFA that is going to supply rice for the entire province,” Chua added.
Based on the current daily distribution of NFA, its stock inventory can last up to 172 days as against the average daily purchases at NFA.
“In terms of pricing, prices of commercial rice is not far from NFA rice that is why there is nothing to worry this holiday season as to supply of NFA rice,” Chua said.
Chua disclosed that there is also very minimal allocation of imported rice for Negros Occidental in 2011.*(JCM/EAD-PIA6/Negros Occidental)

Mga March to April harvest season naman and the rice supply should be just enough. Then the harvest can refill the stock.
bacolodchamp December 18th, 2011, 02:14 PM ^^hopefully, given the good harvest for this year coupled with the provincial government's support to farmers, we'll attain rice sufficiency by then.:)
