Loalde’s Plaid Collection Sets New Trend In Men's Wear
http://i893.photobucket.com/albums/ac138/nationalguard_ssc/loalde2.jpg

http://i893.photobucket.com/albums/ac138/nationalguard_ssc/loalde1.jpg

IT’S a mad, plaid world! Plaid is the ultimate trend in Loalde's men's collection. So for those with second thoughts about wearing it can think again.

Constantly inspired by the individual style, Loalde stitched up some checkered and plaid patterns with reversible shirt cuffs - a trend favorite and the look of Loalde’s Fish 18 ensemble that make Loalde’s plaid shirt collections all the rage this season.

Try on the contemporary plaid pattern and you've got a casual and relaxed style. The material of the shirt is lightweight and breathable, making it one of the most comfortable shirts you will ever own. The material is also heathered, lending this shirt a textured sharp style.

Plaid is the look of the season and this is a great shirt to get you on-trend. The white pronounced seaming throughout gives it a kick of its own. Celebrate the return of this all-year favorite polo. All the softness and casual styling you loved in an updated, more modern fit that only Loalde Fish 18 style can accomplish.

Check out Loalde’s PLAID collection at the branch nearest you – Ayala Center Cebu; SM City Cebu Northwing; Glorietta 3 Makati; The Annex SM City North Edsa; Annex 2 SM City Fairview; SM City Bacolod; Robinson's Place Bacolod; SM City Iloilo; Robinson's Place Iloilo; SM City Davao; Gaisano Mall Davao; LKK Center Cagayan de Oro./PN

Bacolod Clergy to Hold Concert

The Bacolod diocesan clergy lead by Bishop Vicente M. Navarra will present a dance and music concert on December 2 starting at 6:00 p.m. at the University of St. La Salle Coliseum.

The concert will bring together 80 diocesan priests and the bishop who will sing and dance featuring various eras in the life of the priest.

Called "Lauda, O Sion!" the concert is an expression of gratitude of the diocese for the many gifts that God has given to the diocese and to thank the faithful for their support of the various programs and projects of the diocese.

The concert will at the same time raise funds for the health care program of the diocese for the sick and retired priests.

The needs of the retired and sick priests are met by the Roman Catholic Bishop of Bacolod Priests’ Care Office.

The concert is a follow-up of the successful priests’ concert last October 2008 in connection with the Diamond Jubilee of the diocese.

Rene Hinojales is the director of the concert and also its choreographer.

Tickets are available at the office of the parishes and chaplaincies and the Curia office in the Bishop’s House.*

Brothers’ Art

Two brothers, the same passion. Their works are showcased in IKON, an art exhibit going on until Nov. 30 at Namitnamit Pagkaon kag Taliambong at Artekalye located beside Riverside Medical Center, in Bacolod City.

The IKON exhibit displays the works Bro. Tagoy Jakosalem and his sibling, Agustin.

The brothers’ artworks are mostly liturgical in nature apparently influenced by the socio-realities in Negros. They have also incorporated political themes in their art making.

Bro. Tagoy Jakosalem is a Recollect friar who has devoted his life for the promotion of arts and culture. One of the works of Agustin, an emerging artist is ‘Hesus Manghigput’, became the official icon of the Year of the Priests, celebrated in Roman Catholic churches in the Philippines.

1st Western Visayas Water Summit set December 1-2

Iloilo City (27 November) -- Some 200 participants from selected regional line agencies, local government units, private sector/non-government organizations, academe and selected water districts are expected to meet from December 1 to 2, 2009 for the first Western Visayas Water Summit.

Organized by the Regional Development Council (RDC) VI, the summit will be held at the Sugarland Hotel, Bacolod City.

The two-day event will attempt to challenge the provinces and cities of Region VI to respond to and manage well the water needs of people, industries, and ecosystems to pave the way for an integrated and holistic management of the region's water resources considering the many and different, but interdependent uses of water brought about by the demands of its economy without compromising the sustainability of its vital ecosystems.

The RDC VI Water Summit will focus on the following: presenting and validating the status of the region's water resources; presenting the current/prospective trends in managing water resources; showcasing best practices with regard to water resource management; defining and agreeing on an integrated approach to manage water resources; and identifying water-related issues and concerns and recommending an organizational framework for the proper management of water resources.

Resource persons will come from the Central Offices of the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA), National Water Resources Board, Local Water Utilities Administration, Department of Agriculture, Department of Environment and Natural Resources, and Department of Science and Technology.

Also, Mayor German P. Sarana of Bayawan City is expected to present their best practices in water resource management during the summit.

Congressman Ignacio T. Arroyo of the 5th District of Negros Occidental and Chairman Prospero A. Pichay, Jr. of LWUA, together with the RDC, are the Summit's sponsors.

NEDA headed by Director Ro-Ann A. Bacal is providing the over-all Secretariat Support for the affair and will be responsible for the post-Summit follow through activities.

"Towards a More Effective and Efficient Management of the Region's Water Resources" is the theme of the event. (NEDA/PIA) [top]

2009/11/27

(NEDA/PIA)

A modern gallery in an old house

Most of the furniture and accessories in the living room have been in the house since it was built in 1883. (Photo by BIBSY M. CARBALLO)

One of the oldest houses in Talisay City in Negros Occidental is now a museum with an art gallery. It’s called Balay ni Tana Dicang and the name originates from the nickname of the original lady of the house, Enrica Alunan. It was her husband Efigenio Lizares who built the place in 1883. Today, it is managed and maintained by their great grandson, Adrian Lizares.

Adrian, or Adjie to his friends and family, is a modern day bon vivant. We met him in Bacolod last month when he opened an exhibit at the Balay’s Capitana Gallery, or C Gallery. The latter’s in-house curator is Albert Avellana, who also happens to be Adjie’s business partner.

The C Gallery is located in the former commissary for storage of farm produce. It’s constructed in a floating wall system, painted in white with spot lighting, which imparts a decidedly contemporary look. It is a stroke of genius to situate a modern day art gallery within a 126 year-old mansion. It immediately puts things into perspective. Apart from the C Gallery, the zaguan on the ground floor has been host to choral concerts, fund-raisers, and important events such as the Dangal ng Lahi tribute to National Artists. The Museum Shop and a garden party venue will soon open.

Balay ni Tana Dicang, an authentic bahay-na-bato-at-kahoy, stands on a 6,000 square meter lot on Rizal Street. Its proximity to Bacolod (an hour’s drive away) makes it accessible to students going on field trips and tourists. It has 18 rooms, mostly bedrooms, as the owners Efigenio and Dicang had 17 children. In one of his reports, Adjie described the house as “constructed of exotic hardwoods, lifted from the ground and poised on timber stilts, much like the vernacular bahay kubo.” It is wrapped entirely on the ground floor by a wall of stone over a meter thick. The house is embellished on the exterior by coquina (building material of crushed shells and corals) and brick. The coquina is carved into moldings and beveled panels. The wood is carved with botanical forms, all bearing distinct Filipino marks.

The house is well-preserved, considering the fact that it has been 17 years since it was last lived in. It was Adjie’s cousin Girlie Lizares-Bagtas, who last lived there. As everyone knows, neglect is a bane to preservation. A house has to be lived in just as a piano has to be played to keep it in running condition.

When Adjie took over the house in 2002 and repairs are constantly attended to. “We need to stabilize the Balay’s wooden framework so wehave is a full-time carpenter in the staff. We also employ eight full-time staff plus a retinue of contractors. It all depends on the need of the moment,” he says.

While working on the house, Adjie discovered several heirlooms, including an original casein milk binder in shades of blue. It was found under several layers of paint. Old coins melted and made into dining utensils bear the initials of the house residents. China, clothes, journals and even recipes have survived war and natural calamities.

“There is a ledger of Tana Dicang from 1903 to 1909 that we keep like a piece of treasure,” continues Adjie. “We also have her last will and testament. The original vestments of the Magdalena resurfaced after we thought it lost. These have the original gold thread and heavy embroidery that was the fashion for liturgical vestments in the 1920s.”

The partitions of the interior are of Filipino hardwood like molave, balayong and narra. Venetian style window shutters let the air in, and Persian style capiz windows keep the rain out. Classical embellishments are found in moldings and cornices. There are four rose windows in the living room and pierced woodwork in the grand staircase.

With its architectural legacy intact, the house is as much a tribute to the matriarch who lived there. Married in 1872, the Lizares-Alunan couple were simple, no-nonsense people. They originally lived in a modest-sized house near the sugar plantation as they were attached to the land. Their lifestyle has been described as almost austere, bereft of frivolity even if they grew increasingly affluent through the years.

Tana Dicang was said to be very industrious. She was an expert farm manager and she personally inspected and supervised the family businesses. She also invested in and managed sugar centrals in Talisay and Bacolod.

She engaged in many other businesses and enjoyed her position and power in society to the hilt. Yet she never ventured outside the island of Negros. Such was her devotion to the province.

In her final will and testament, she bequeathed the Balay to six of her eight daughters with the specification that its maintenance be supported out of 10 percent of the income of her two sugar haciendas.

Four distilleries in pipeline for the Philippines

2 December 2009

Four new distilleries will be built in the Philippines to quench the country’s growing thirst for bioethanol fuel.

The distilleries will be running by the first quarter of 2010 and will be located in La Carlota City, Magallanes, San Mariano and Cagayan de Oro City.

The largest distillery will be located in San Marino with a capacity to produce 54 million litres a year.

The new plants will add 164 million litres of bioethanol a year to the country’s annual bioethanol production.

The total amount of bioethanol produced in the Philippines from existing and planned distilleries is a total of 209 million litres.

This is far behind the 461 million litres needed for the country to comply with the mandate that calls for a 10% bioethanol mix in all fuels by 2011.

Globe Asiatique eyes up to P3.05 billion from IPO
By Zinnia B. Dela Peña (The Philippine Star) Updated December 04, 2009 12:00 AM

MANILA, Philippines - Globe Asiatique Realty Holdings Corp., a leading developer of low-cost housing communities, has formally filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission its application for an initial public offering (IPO) of shares, which is expected to generate between P880 million and P3.05 billion in proceeds.

Globe Asiatique has a solid track record in the development of low-cost to middle-income housing projects and has produced and delivered over 13,400 housing units in nine completed projects under its Xevera brand since it was formed in 1994.

The company is selling 136.36 million shares through a primary offering with an overallotment option of up to 168.7 million shares at a price ranging from P6.50 to P10 apiece.

The shares to be offered represent 15 percent of the issued and outstanding capital of the company.

It is also selling as much as 34.09 million shares through a secondary offering. BDO Capital & Investment Corp. has been tapped as issue manager and lead underwriter for the offering.

Proceeds from the IPO will be used to fund the construction of G.A. Sky Suites and Corporate Tower and several residential subdivisions, as well as pay down bank loans.

Globe Asiatique said it is in the process of developing another brand, Sameera, which will offer housing units at an even lower price range than its Xevera brand.

It has also lined up housing projects in Bacolod, Subic, Mindoro and Angeles City, Pampanga to take advantage of the shortage of 3.8 million housing units in the country, primarily in the socialized and low-cost category.

The company said it expects the demand for low-cost housing to be undersupplied for the next two years.

The company maintains a landbank of 215,188 square meters available for use for future development. It has been working with the Home Development Mutual Fund or Pag-IBIG to provide end-user financing options to clients.

Last year, Globe Asiatique posted a net income of P235.82 million, nearly six times the P39.6 million reported in 2007, on the back of higher sales from new and ongoing projects.

Revenues grew more than five-fold to P3.86 billion, mainly due to sales from the P3-billion Xevera Bacolod project whose 4,000 units were sold out in three and a half months after its launch in January 2008. In the nine months ending September this year, the company reported a 39.74 percent growth in net income to P300.14 million on robust sales and better margins.

^^here's a related article for casa carmela migs....

Mango, ‘calamansi,’ ‘dalandan,’ ‘ube,’ rum, espresso -all ‘piaya’ flavors

PIAYAS, THE ALL-TIME favorite from Bacolod, has not been spared by the changing times.

What we once knew as little flat, flaky pastries stuffed with muscovado has morphed into something modern—in taste, texture and appearance.

Casa Carmela, owned by Millie Locsin Kilayko, a Negrense who traces her roots to people who loved good food, says that her treats are “inspired by the richness of her heritage, propelled by the challenges of a dynamic contemporary palate.”

Her version of the piaya is fine and crisp, not sweet, perfect with a cup of coffee. But her repertoire goes beyond the traditional as her love for experimentation has luckily produced new and interesting piaya flavors: mango, calamansi, dalandan, ube, rum and espresso.

One of her most notable creations are the bite-sized minis called Piayitos, which is served onboard our flag carrier, Philippine Airlines. Other renditions include: Cocktail Piayas—low-salt with various crusts, perfect for dips; After-Dinner Piayas (dark chocolate with mint); Piaquillos (crispy piaya rolled like barquillos—this is Kilayko’s fusion piaya, putting two of the most popular pasalubong items of her province into one creation; Piaya Cones—muscovado-filled cones for ice cream and low-salt, sesame seed-encrusted cones for savory fillings. They even sell beautiful wire holders for the serving of cones.

Kilayko’s other creations are as interesting, though in truth, I have not tried them but will do soon: Chicken Inasal Pâté, Turron Imperial, Pitaw and Baked Polvoron with Organic Muscovado Sugar.

Her goodies make for perfect gifts since their packaging is fantastic.

It is wonderful to know that our age-old delicacies are making a comeback in a big way. And we have people like Kilayko to thank for keeping our gustatory heritage alive.

Thanks, Vivian, for introducing me to Casa Carmela Piayas.

Casa Carmela will be at the Baker’s Dozen Fair, Power Plant Mall in Rockwell every weekend of November and December. On Dec. 8, Casa Carmela will open its Manila outlet at Estrella St. (The shop is close to the Zodiac gate of Bel-Air 3 and across Palm Village gate). Call 0917-3008736.

Bacolod City, situated on the northwestern part of the island of Negros, is bounded by the Guimaras Strait on the west, the municipality of Talisay on the north, the municipality of Murcia on the east, and Bago City on the South. The City has land area of 156.1 kilometers. In 1970, it had a population of 187,300. It has a cool invigorating climate with abundant rainfall. The majority of the people speak Ilonggo and the rest speak Cebuano. Bacolod, the "Sugar City in the Philippines," is one of the most progressive and elite cities in the country. Along its highway, sugarcane plantation is a typical scene; coconut and rice are also grown. The people are engaged in livestock, fishing and pottery. Bacolod was derived from the Ilonggo word "bakolod" meaning "stonehill" since the settlement was founded in 1770 on a stonehill area, now the district of Granada and the former site of the Bacolod Murcia Milling Company.

Accor Hotel to build no-frills hotel (http://www.philippine-builder.com/news/top-stories/478-accor-hotel-to-build-no-frills-hotel.html)
10 July 2008

European based Accor Hotel, United Kingdom’s Yotel, Malaysian hotel chain and two Indian firms are interested in building no frills hotels in the country.

“I will be meeting the representatives from the Indian firms in the next 90 days,” Samie Lim, chairman of the Philippine Franchisers Association said in an interview.

Lim refused to name the Indian companies saying only that one group owns four hotels while the other operates 30 hotels.

Lim explained that he is studying the concept of the Malaysian group which ties up the budget air fare to the hotel. “Air Asia has a partnership with a hotel near the airport
. It is a good business,” he explained. Lim said the investments are part of the ASEAN hotel project of the ASEAN member nations namely the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar and Malaysia.

The ASEAN hotel plans to build similar no frills hotels in the 10 member countries. The hotels will be priced the same. The amenities, rooms and the lobby of all the hotels across the ASEAN will be the same as well.

According to Lim, the ASEAN ministers approved the ASEAN hotel concept last year after the meeting of the economic ministers in Manila.

“All the ASEAN hotels will have similar services and integrated marketing and advertising,” Lim explained. “They will also conduct a centralized training for the food and beverage staff.”

This, he said, is necessary in order to ensure that the services provided by all ASEAN hotels are consistent.

Also, Lim said there will be more than one ASEAN hotel per country. In the Philippines, he said there should be ASEAN hotels in all major tourist destinations like Cebu, Boracay, Bacolod, Baguio and Ilocos.

Lim further said that the owner of the franchise in the country must be a local. If this is not possible, he said at least a big chunk of the hotel franchise is owned by a resident. For example, the master franchise of the hotel must be 34 percent owned by locals.

The Accor Hotel is currently operating in nearly 100 countries. It is the European leader in hotels and the global leader in corporate services. Yotel on the other hand is also a no frills hotel operating in United Kingdom.

Philippines Business Process Outsourcing (BPO)
By admin, Dec. 5, 2009 in Outsourcing Philippines

Since Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) is widely recognized as the fastest growing industry in the world, Philippine BPO is consistently making its way to the top along with other competing countries. With people who have great skills and competence in the workforce which makes the country to be internationally known in the BPO industry. Aside from the growing number of call centers there are also a higher demand of services in web development, animation, medical transcriptionist, software development and so on.

The main basis of an individual in dealing with outsourcing their non-core tasks are skills quality and competence which is a huge advantage in Philippine BPO. Mainly because Filipinos are known as skillful and talented people. Also with higher education and good english speaking country that can competitively work with in the industry.

Its capital city, Manila holds the majority of Philippines’ BPO facilities together with Bacolod City and Cebu City. This means that the over growing development has also reached to some parts of Philippines like Davao City, Cagayan de Oro, Iloilo City and more. This makes Philippines as one of the favorite destinations in the outsourcing industry.

Vulcan signs deal with Chinese miner for copper joint venture in Negros

Listed Vulcan Industrial and Mining Corp. has inked a deal for a possible buy-in of a Chinese miner and a partnership for a copper project in Western Visayas.

Vulcan told the bourse yesterday it had signed a memorandum of understanding and confidentiality agreement with JC Minerals Group of China for a possible joint venture involving a copper project.

“That is a buy-in,” Patrick V. Caoile, executive vice-president of Vulcan, told BusinessWorld.

Mr. Caoile said the companies have yet to determine how much was needed for the exploration of the Negros project.

“[JC Minerals] will do a due diligence within three months prior to their decision to invest in the Vulcan copper project in Negros,” the miner said.

JC Minerals, which is into metal trading, aquaculture, property and mining exploration, sold more than $50 million worth of minerals in 2007.

In May, Vulcan signed an agreement for Pointechnology Mining and Development Corp., a Korean mining and trading firm, to explore 100 hectares of Vulcan’s 6,325-hectare copper and gold property in the municipality of Cordon in Isabela.

Rising mineral prices have encouraged Vulcan to fast-track mining projects, Mr. Caoile said. “Gold and copper prices are good right now,” he said in Filipino.

Copper prices for cash buyers have risen to $3.18 per pound from the average prices of $1.55 and $2.02 per pound in the first and second quarters, respectively, data from the London Metal Exchange showed.

Gold is selling at $1,156 per ounce, up from $857 per ounce in January.

Vulcan reported a net income of P2.636 million in the nine months to September, turning around from a P230,179 net loss during the same period last year.

Shares in Vulcan, which also holds the 6,250-hectare Marian gold mine in Isabela and the 1,646-hectare Panaoan gold pro-ject in Southern Leyte, dropped to P0.61 apiece yesterday from P0.64 last week. -- Neil Jerome C. Morales

Globe Asiatique bullish on IPO

PROPERTY DEVELOPER Globe Asiatique Realty Holdings Corp. has grand plans for next year, highlighted by a planned debut at the Philippine Stock Exchange and the launch of more projects.

Globe Asiatique President Delfin S. Lee said the company was looking at selling shares to the public by the first quarter. Mr. Lee said the sale of 338 million shares would raise P3 billion in cash, two-thirds of which would be used for new and existing projects.

"With the money coming from the initial public offering, we can do two to three major projects as opposed to just one major project a year using our own money," Mr. Lee said.

The property company will launch three major township projects next year, namely Xevera Neo-Calapan, a 34-hectare project in Mindoro that will have 3,000 to 4,000 units; Xevera Subic, which will occupy a 100-hectare lot with 15,000 house-and-lot units; and Xevera Bacolod, an 88-hectare property expected to have a total of 5,000 to 6,000 units.

Mr. Lee said the three projects would be completed in a span of two years, generating sales of approximately P15 billion. The new projects, he said, would cater to those who have a monthly income of at least P30,000 and afford to shell out P5,000 to P6,000 a month.

"There is a strong demand for these types of projects. [Based on our experience], we can sell all our units in just a span of three months," Mr. Lee said. These types of projects, he noted, cater to first-time homebuyers.

A two-storey, 45-square-meter Xevera unit will cost around P750,000, Mr. Lee said. The group also plans to enter the socialized housing sector, where prices range between P450,000 to P750,000, under a new brand, Sameera.

"We introduced this new brand because we see a lot of potentials in this market," Mr. Lee said.

The Sameera brand will fit the pockets of those who have a monthly income of P12,000. Globe Asiatique plans to build its Sameera projects in Angeles, Pampanga and Subic, Zambales.

"We want to focus on the socialized and low-cost [sectors] because these are the [sectors] that most developers usually overlook," Mr. Lee said.

The low-income market accounts for approximately 90% of the total demand for housing in the country. There is a shortage of 3.8 million housing units in the Philippines, which major developers are struggling to fill up.

Globe Asiatique was incorporated in 1994 and marked its entry into the property industry with the Sta. Barbara Villas I project in San Mateo, Rizal.

Projects include the 200-hectare St. Monique Vilais in Binangonan, Rizal; Chateau Valenzuela in Valenzuela; Casa Ibiza in Antipolo; and high-rise projects GA Sky Suites in Quezon City and GA Twin Towers in Mandaluyong.
