The trade and tourism expo is expected to bring many tour operators from Australia to the Philippines and will serve as an avenue for the hiring of Negrense skilled workers as well as the promotion of study-migrate, and tourism and retirement programs.

Bing re-launching ‘tourist is a friend’
BY CHRYSEE SAMILLANO

Bacolod Mayor Evelio Leonardia yesterday said he is re-launching his tourism program called “A Tourist is a Friend,” because tourists continue to contribute to the economy of Bacolod.

Leonardia, a former Tourism Department official, said he had adopted the program that was very successful in the early 1980’s.

He said, “If tourists feel safe and their stay here is pleasant, they will become our walking marketing tools and that will happen if the community itself will fully support our tourism program and make tourists feel special, safe, secure and at home here.”

Feeling safe gid sila tood sa aton. Kita mo gapanglakaton lang sila maski gab i na.

Lain pa gid ni ya sang ginhambal ni Mayor Oti nga ga apply?

Leonardia said he also had talks with Air Asia and the owner told him they will open a direct flight to Bacolod, and that it is not only flights from Singapore that will come to Bacolod. But he said, definitely, Bacolod is a market the airlines are always seriously considering, Leonardia said.

‘tourist is a friend’

Bacolod Mayor Evelio Leonardia yesterday said he is re-launching his tourism program called “A Tourist is a Friend,” because tourists continue to contribute to the economy of Bacolod.

Leonardia said he also had talks with Air Asia and the owner told him they will open a direct flight to Bacolod, and that it is not only flights from Singapore that will come to Bacolod. But he said, definitely, Bacolod is a market the airlines are always seriously considering, Leonardia said.

He also said the country manager and president of Philippine Airlines told him that they have never considered discontinuing their flights to Bacolod, as earlier reported by some media.

Bacolod Tourism Officer Imogene Kana-an said that, in the last five years, Koreans have topped city records in terms of tourist arrivals. In December 2011, they recorded about 30,000 Korean tourists, she said.

"I will help promote the celebration in Japan. Bacolaodiat will have a Japanese exposure and, hopefully, people from Japan will come and witness the celebration of the Chinese New Year," she said.

Before she went back to Japan, she joined Mayor Evelio Leonardia and the Bacolaodiat organizers led by festival chairman Leonito Lopue in a press conference to update the Bacolodnons and tourists on the preparation for the grand Chinese New Year celebration in the city to give honor to Chinese Filipino community who made a great contribution in pump priming the economy of the city and country.

Fukuda, who used to work at the Philippine Embassy in Japan, has a large network of Japanese friends and Bacolodnons and Negrenses who worked and stayed in Japan.

More Koreans expected to visit Negros Occidental

Another batch of Korean tourists is set to arrive here on Saturday.

Zest Air International has booked two flights per week from Bacolod-Silay Airport direct to Incheon, Korea and vice versa, said the company’s director Arturo Alejandrino.

“The Koreans were very impressed by the welcome given by the Silay City Government and the Provincial Government. There’s no reason that they will not come back here,” Alejandrino said.

Negros and Silay City have a huge tourism potential, he said.

He added it’s almost the same situation here when Zest Air started its direct flight from Boracay to Korea. “Now we have already 14 flights in Boracay,” he said.

Negros Occidental Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr. hosted a dinner for the tourists last Saturday at the Provincial Capitol where the towns and cities presented their respective tourism potentials.

Majority of the Korean tourists who arrived here last Saturday are businessmen and golfers.

They were accompanied by the president of the second largest tour operator in Korea, Alejandrino said.

ZestAir director Arturo Alejandrino pointed out their experience with Kalibo, Aklan where, in December of 2009, they started with two flights a week and now have a total of 14 flights a week coming in from Korea, Taipei and China. The Korean tourists who flew in last Saturday mostly came to play golf, but because Alejandrino says that after Aklan, Bacolod and Negros Occidental are second on their list of tourist destinations in the region, there is a chance that these direct international flights can become regular if we can expand our efforts to include other tourist attractions in the province.

But while Negros Occidental look expectantly to the Koreans to increase in volume visits to the province, one thing that caught my attention was the designation by Gov. Marañon of Grace Horii, former tourism attaché to Japan, as consultant of the province.

Grace can help generate more interest among Japanese for Negros Occidental. She and Eleanor Fukuda, president of the ODAN-J, the Organization of the Development Advancement of Negros Occidental in Japan should be able to encourage more Japanese nationals and businessmen to come to the province for both visits and possible business opportunities.

i think one highly commendable act i see these past few days is that, it's the negrenses ourselves who are working hard to make these things possible for our province. the government sector with the help of our fellow negrenses in different parts of the globe willingly extend their services to help in every way they can to achieve and help sustain our aim to be at the forefront of philippine tourism whithout relying too much on the national government.:)

one more thing, grabe ang "clout" sang mga negrenses. they are everywhere; mga consuls, foreign office personnel kag head of various orgranizations in their respective host countries. kudos to you, mga kasimanwa.

Nowhere to expand ang Doctors' kundi upwards, but with the main building is built gid at the river bank so di na pwede kapataas gid ang Doctors Hospital. Sa annex lang pwede sila mka dugang floors.

Doctors' Hospital is still a little more than 150 beds in capacity and they are not yet planning an expansion. They are currently refurbishing the interiors and upgrading the facilities to be competitive

Pacete: The Koreans have landed

| More |
By Ver F. Pacete
As I See It
Wednesday, January 11, 2012

SATURDAY; January 7, 2012. Zest Air airplane landed at the airport in Silay City 12:50 p.m. That was the first international flight with 120 Korean tourists from Incheon, South Korea. Mayor Jose Montelibano tasked me to spearhead the official welcome party from Silay City. With me are Executive Assistant Susan Velez, Francess Dane Cobrado, Lin-ay Sang Silay Nathalie Porsalida, Kaye Jalandoni, Aldwin Dalpatan (official photographer) and Kier Salmingo (official videographer).

We brought with us official leis from Silay City Hall and a beautiful welcome tarpaulin bearing our tourism tag line, Silay: seat of arts, culture and ecotourism in Western Visayas. At the airport, we were joined in by Atty. Helen J. Catalbas, the OIC of the Department of Tourism in Region VI. She was accompanied by a group of media men from Iloilo City (radio, tv, print). Atty. Catalbas was fetched at the BREDCO Port by Cristine Mansinares, provincial tourism officer, Imogene Canaan, tourism officer of Bacolod City, and Nancy Pestano, tourism consultant for Negros Occidental.

While waiting for the historic moment, we stayed at the VIP room of the airport.

Marissa Montelibano, president of Hugyaw Silay Inc., sent Silay hometown delicacies for the welcome party. There, we were met by Airport Manager Mecine T. Reyes and by my friend, (just promoted), Major Efren Laquihon, formerly assigned here as chief of the Airport Security Command. A review of the last minute plan was done as excited Bacolod tri media observed us. We were discussing traffic route and security with the local Zest Air manager. Everything was there according to the reception drawing board.

And, the touchdown! Seyou Air Co., Ltd. / Zest Air and Korean travel officials were with us already at the arrival area forming a protocol line with Cong. Albee Benitez. All cameras and microphones were set. There was fiesta atmosphere at the air side and land side of the airport. Buses at the parking areas were like princes standing by for their ladies-in-waiting. The Koreans formed two lines as they approached the table of the Immigration and the Customs. Very orderly!

Shaking of hands and donning of leis followed. At the front line to welcome are President and CEO S. K. Kim, Director Arturo M. Alejandrino, Business Planning Senior Manager Chris Kim, Managing Director for planning / Executive Secretary Kay Kim, and Finance Controller, Haans Kim. I would like to thank the close coordination of the staff of the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines with Airport and Silay PNP. Good work, guys!

The caravan from the airport going to Silay City Hall was some kind of a spectacle. Airport road shoulders were blaring green ‘welcome to Silay banners’. Zest Air and Korean travel officials vans and buses came to a halt in front of Silay City Hall.

The reception committee there was headed by Mayor Jose Montelibano, Vice Mayor Mark Golez, the city councilors, Marissa Montelibano, Lyn Gamboa (Negros Cultural Foundation president), Maida Jison (Balay Negrense director), barangay officials and the residents of Silay.

The scene drama gradually unfolded when one hundred cast wearing Filipiniana attire moved around in a picturesque manner making the area in front of Silay City Hall a picture perfect live stage. This was humbly done to let the Korean tourists know that they have really landed in the Philippines… not in Thailand, not in Indonesia, not in Japan, not in China, not elsewhere.

The senior boy and girl scouts entered the buses, cast the sweetest Silaynon smiles and offered the guests a ‘basket of love’ containing Silay’s tourism brochure and delicacies…piaya, butong-butong, and lubid-lubid. “This is beyond expectation!” said Zest Air Director Arturo Alejandrino. “The Silaynons have given us a great surprise. We have to see it to believe it that this is really happening!”

For a moment, time stopped. The focus was on a real-life-drama on ‘Silay Fiesta Reception” provided with Philippine music by the champion drum and bugle corps of Silay South Elementary School complimented by the pelvic gyrations of the majorettes and the flag girls who were having their all-around-sways. The buses moved forward to Bacolod to catch up with the day’s schedule of the tourists. Director Helen Catalbas, the city officials, the tourism officers, Zest Air pilots / stewardesses, Korean travel officials and the airline top brass accepted the invitation of Mayor Oti to have late lunch at Sen. Jose C. Locsin Cultural and Civic Center (the oldest cultural center in the Philippines, 1957). (It also houses the Silay City Tourism Office and the Public Library.)

The lunch was also our modest way of welcoming our tourism director in
Western Visayas, Atty. Helen J. Catalbas. The Association of Tourism Officers of Negros Occidental (ATONO), our mayors and congressmen in the province favorably endorsed her to be our ace bet to spearhead tourism industry in the region. It was a ‘buena mano’ because her first official appearance in Silay was a date with history.

Yes, the Koreans have landed! There will be two international flights from Korea to Silay every week until March… or beyond March. Negrenses, we have to put our acts together. Tourism means decent livelihood. We have to be good at it to have it. “Let’s have more fun in the Philippines!” Especially, in Negros!

More Koreans arriving in Negros today
BY CARLA GOMEZ

The second chartered ZestAir flight from Korea will land at the Bacolod SilayAirport with an expected 127 tourists on board 11:30 a.m. today, ZestAir Director Arturo Alejandrino said yesterday.

However, there could be more depending on last-minute bookings, he told the DAILY STAR.

Silay Mayor Jose Montelibano said another airline has also expressed interest in flying in tourists from Singapore directly to Negros Occidental, but this was opposed by local airlines.

However, if the country adopts an open skies policy, direct flights from Singapore can land at the Bacolod Silay Airport, Montelibano added.

Montelibano said that with the influx of tourists into Negros Occidental there is a need for networking among Local Government Units in the province to be ready with their tourism attractions.

I also believe carriers would not start maiden "chartered" flights if their studies do not prove that the route is sustainable for the long term. Ang flight sang Zest Air between Bcd-Icheon-Bcd was actually a deal between the travel agent and the airline.Yet the govt was involved still it boils down to the decision of the Travel Agent who mostly sells the seats and thats why wala sila ga appear kon ma buy ka online. It like Zest Air is actually just providing the aircraft.Based naman sa mga pashero kita naman naton nga kadamo golfers.and some probably beach goers or honeymooners. We quite lucky to be far from Kalibo kay the travel can sell and present package for Neg Occ only.Meanwhile the travel agent from Kalibo can include IloIlo as a sidetrip.Kalibo is definitely more attractive than the rest of WV and Neg Occ has fortunately sealed its fate as the next tourist haven for Koreans,,,,,for now,,,and soooon Asia ....probably.:banana:

^^i agree....benchmarking is good in the sense that we get to replicate the best practices of other cities. and what is more appropriate than to look up at cities that are far more advanced than we are. better yet, make singapore, taipei or HK as our model.:)

68 films to be shown at Cinema Rehiyon

Sixty-eight films will be featured in the fourth Cinema Rehiyon, a non-competition film festival of the National Commission for Culture and Arts at Robinsons Movie World-Bacolod on February.

At a press conference yesterday at Robinsons Place-Bacolod, Dr. Mike Rapatan, head of the National Committee on Cinema, said Cinema Rehiyon is a traveling event that was launched in Davao last year.

He said the program aims to develop and continue to provide venues for artistic and cultural expressions through film and reach out to the youth for them to recognize, understand, and take pride in the heritage of culture and arts.

This is also a challenge for film makers in the region to express their culture and beliefs in the contemporary way, he added.

There are 21 films from Luzon, 29 from Visayas, and 18 Mindanao. From the 29 films from Visayas, 12 are from Bacolod with 10 short films, one feature length documentary, and one feature film, Rapatan said.
