SIPALAY
Sipalay has various natural fascinations that one can see & experience. The 3-hour land trip to the city is truly rewarding as you start exploring the bounties that abound the place.
Beach Resorts

15-minute boat ride from the city proper is the Sugar Beach - German, Swiss and Filipino-owned resorts line this sugary beach, which offers an excellent place for swimming, and various water sports activities.

Not far from the Sugar Beach is the Tinagong Dagat - a hidden sea sprinkled with a dozen islets covered with lush vegetation. The sea bottom is covered with patches of sea grass beds, with the shoreline lined by old-growth mangroves.

Punta Ballo Beach is located in close proximity to Tinagong Dagat- This fine white sandy beach is more than a kilometer stretch. It's the nearest jump off point towards the sea ideal for snorkeling & diving due to the rich marine life.

Going more or less 10 minutes from the Punta Ballo Beach is Campomanes Bay - The bay is excellent not only for diving but for jet skiing, kayaking, and all sorts of water sports. It has an existing port that caters to medium-sized sea craft. The enclosed shape of the bay and islets in its opening provide calm waters even in harsh weather conditions. Entrance to the bay is a wide expanse of coral garden with various species of corals and fish.

Carlo Ledesma's The Haircut wins at Cannes!, Posted 06-14-2007, 02:00 PM

Negrense Carlo Ledesma 32, son of Gerry Ledesma and Ramona Coscolluela, won the Best Film Award and a 10,000 - euro prize from the Mini-Movie International Channel at the Short Film Corner of the 2007 Cannes Film Festival for his film "The Haircut".

The film, which tells the story of a barber who is confronted by a bald customer's request for a haircut, was directed by Ledesma who is based in Sydney, Australia. It was produced by Mel Lozano.

The prize money will fund Ledesma's next film "The Last One", half -hour drama he describes as "Run Lola Run meets Collateral."

Ledesma, who was born in Negros, finished his elementary and high school at La Salle Bacolod and his college degree in English Literature at DLSU, his father Gerry, who heads the Philippine Reef and Rainforests Conservation Foundation Inc. and the Negros Forests and Ecological Foundation INc., said yesterday.

The Haircut was Ledesma's graduation film at the University of Sydney College of Arts.

Globe Asiatique eyes up to P3.05 billion from IPO
By Zinnia B. Dela Peña (The Philippine Star) Updated December 04, 2009 12:00 AM

MANILA, Philippines - Globe Asiatique Realty Holdings Corp., a leading developer of low-cost housing communities, has formally filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission its application for an initial public offering (IPO) of shares, which is expected to generate between P880 million and P3.05 billion in proceeds.

Globe Asiatique has a solid track record in the development of low-cost to middle-income housing projects and has produced and delivered over 13,400 housing units in nine completed projects under its Xevera brand since it was formed in 1994.

The company is selling 136.36 million shares through a primary offering with an overallotment option of up to 168.7 million shares at a price ranging from P6.50 to P10 apiece.

The shares to be offered represent 15 percent of the issued and outstanding capital of the company.

It is also selling as much as 34.09 million shares through a secondary offering. BDO Capital & Investment Corp. has been tapped as issue manager and lead underwriter for the offering.

Proceeds from the IPO will be used to fund the construction of G.A. Sky Suites and Corporate Tower and several residential subdivisions, as well as pay down bank loans.

Globe Asiatique said it is in the process of developing another brand, Sameera, which will offer housing units at an even lower price range than its Xevera brand.

It has also lined up housing projects in Bacolod, Subic, Mindoro and Angeles City, Pampanga to take advantage of the shortage of 3.8 million housing units in the country, primarily in the socialized and low-cost category.

The company said it expects the demand for low-cost housing to be undersupplied for the next two years.

The company maintains a landbank of 215,188 square meters available for use for future development. It has been working with the Home Development Mutual Fund or Pag-IBIG to provide end-user financing options to clients.

Last year, Globe Asiatique posted a net income of P235.82 million, nearly six times the P39.6 million reported in 2007, on the back of higher sales from new and ongoing projects.

Revenues grew more than five-fold to P3.86 billion, mainly due to sales from the P3-billion Xevera Bacolod project whose 4,000 units were sold out in three and a half months after its launch in January 2008. In the nine months ending September this year, the company reported a 39.74 percent growth in net income to P300.14 million on robust sales and better margins.

Rafe Totengco retraces his roots

New York-based fashion accessories designer Rafael Felix (Rafe) Totengco’s foray into the fashion world began way early in his life. How early? How about fifth grade?

"It kind of happened accidentally," Rafe tells Balikbayan Magazine. Then we began a trip down memory lane and we ended up on the corner of fifth grade and awkward, in the city of smiles, Bacolod.

In the Philippines, when you go to mass every Sunday, you’re supposed to wear your Sunday’s best. When Rafe was young, he didn’t really care about clothing and he would just wear whatever he had. His sisters would be embarrassed and would tease him that he looks like the gardener’s son.

Rafe’s mother, in one of her trips to Manila, bought fabrics in Divisoria, gave it to him in a box and told him to go to the tailor and have stuff made. Off he went to the tailor but he didn’t realize back then that he could actually tell the tailor what to create for him.

He bought some fashion magazines and started looking at the illustrations. At that time, he says there was a magazine called Manila Women’s Wear and there was an incredible illustrator named Danilo Franco. He began tracing over Franco’s sketches because back then, he didn’t really know how to draw people. "I was in fifth grade and all I drew were horses, Voltes V, sharks. Then I thought, ‘What if take this pocket and put it here and this and that color would match," he recalls with a smile.

Rafe returned to the tailor with all his sketches and after a week, he had a whole new wardrobe. "I was like, ‘Hmmmm. Who cares about horses?’ It was a Eureka moment and that triggered my interest. At that point, I was buying Manila Women’s Wear every time it came out. I was obsessed with all those illustrations," he admits.

While his classmates in his fifth grade class played with toy robots and spiders, Rafe’s interest in fashion escalated. This was also the time when he began buying Vogue. Can you imagine, fifth grade in Bacolod, buying Vogue. There was only one department store there which carried Vogue and it was so expensive. Of course it was wrapped in plastic and you can’t just open it and look. You have to buy it!" he adds. The now celebrated designer never looked back.

Rafe ran Schizo, a clothing business in Manila until he was 21. In 1989, he moved to New York to pursue a career in fashion design. He enrolled at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) and gained experience working as a design assistant.

In 1994, a Soho boutique asked him to produce a collection of belts and watch- bands. When they sold out instantly, the boutique requested for Rafe to design a grouping of handbags to sell alongside the small leather goods. One year later, the first collection of Rafe handbags debuted.

Over the years, Rafe Totengco has become one of the most acclaimed among the new generation of American designers, garnering awards and nominations from the Accessories Council, The Council of Fashion Designers of America, Fashion Group International and other award-giving bodies in the fashion industry.

This year, Rafe opened his first Manila boutique at the posh Greenbelt 5. It was like a homecoming of sorts, as the Philippines welcomed him back with open arms. With the opening of this store, Rafe says his life has come full circle.

The Manila boutique, designed to mimic the brand’s New York City showroom, boasts baby blue damask patterned walls, rich chocolate brown floors and an eclectic mix of Asian antiques and vintage furniture. The free-standing store carries an edited collection of Rafe handbags, shoes and leather goods which are merchandised to epitomize the brand’s fun, chic aesthetic. In addition, Rafe will produce a collection of limited edition accessories especially for the boutique.

Owned by Ricco and Tina Ocampo, the husband and wife team behind multi-brand fashion boutique Mix, the store is a franchise that grew organically from the pair’s long-standing relationship with Totengco.

"Ricco and Tina have supported me from the very beginning" says Totengco. "From my early years in the Philippines to now, with the store. I couldn’t have imagined two better partners to work with on this endeavor."

Rafe has been going back to the Philippines quite regularly specially in the past few years. As a balikbayan himself, he hopes to come back a few more times than the usual.

"It is always fun for me to go back home and I really enjoy it because I get to see my old friends. I have Manila friends and Bacolod friends and the two groups don’t necessarily mix," he shares.

He admits though that it is the myriad of food choices that he misses the most. Among the comfort foods that he craves constantly is the chicken inasal from his native Bacolod.

For the past years that he has been going home and staying in Manila during his visits, he was always on the lookout for the authentic chicken inasal from his childhood.

During his past trip, he had a photo shoot and the night prior, he bumped into Joel Torre. Rafe told him that he was craving for some inasal. "I told him I was naglilihi, and he said, ‘I’ll deliver it to you.’ I was like, ‘Really?’" Rafe recalls.

Long story short, Torre (who operates JT Manukan Grille restaurants in Manila) delivered his famous chicken inasal to the studio where Rafe was shooting his spring campaign.

When the food arrived, they were still in the middle of the shoot and they had to stop to eat the chicken he has been craving for. "It was so good. It triggered a lot of my childhood memories and the friendships I have built," he quips.

The designer is thankful that despite his being away for so long, every time he comes home, he feels as if he never left. "That’s what’s so beautiful about the friendships that I have there," Rafe adds.

If and when he gets more time to travel, Rafe wants to explore more of the Philippines and visit Vigan, Bohol, Zamboanga, Palawan and other tourist spots in the country.

During our interview, we asked Rafe to play favorites, and here are excerpts of that conversation.

Fashion icons: Coco Chanel is amazing, Christian Lacroix is very original, Givenchy, Rei Kawakubo, Yohji Yamamoto, they all have inspiring stories and I learned a lot from all of them. I’m like a sponge.

Style icon today: Kate Moss, she couldn’t do no wrong.

Season: Spring, then summer. It’s all about the colors and optimism. It’s time to be happy. You can be whimsical. Fall and winter, you get to be more serious and get into a cocoon. During the spring, you can have a little frivolity. Who doesn’t need that?

Three words to describe himself now: Approachable. Curious. Adventurous.

Design Inspiration: There is no one source for me. It happens every time, even when I am eating and I see a perfect shade of pasta sauce. Conversation, music, people, it is random. It’s up in the air and it’s hard to pinpoint.

Things to Wear: I have my "uniform," which is jeans, printed or striped shirt. My friends could spot me from a mile away. I always wear the same things.

City: Paris

Hotel: The Grand Hyatt in Tokyo

Restaurant: Le Voltaire in Paris

Airport: Incheon in Seoul, it is spotless and very modern.

Airline: Japan Airlines

Travel Must-Haves: My iPod, notebook because I need to sketch while I am waiting or while I am doing nothing, and my eyemask, because you know.... (laughs), or maybe Ambien.

Five items every man should have in his wardrobe: (1) A good watch because you don’t want to be embarrassed when you hold your wrist up. It doesn’t have to be expensive and as long as it is not fake. I like a little authenticity. (2) A good pair of shoes because at the end of the day, you can be in jeans and shirt but if your shoes are awful, it just speaks volumes. (3) Clean shirts. I don’t care if it is crumpled because sometimes it is kind of cute, but please make sure it is clean. (4) A good belt. I look at the finishing details. (5) Trousers that fit.

Weekend Brunch: So many, like Pastis is fantastic and fun for the crowd, but if you just want to eat, SoHo House is it. Dimsum in Chinatown is also my idea of a good brunch. Bobby’s in TriBeCa.

Work Lunch: Union Square Café, Republic and Tarallucci E Vino.

Dinner: Zampa, Scarpetta, Cendrillon, Indochine and Il Buco

Bar: SoHo House, Zampa

Weekend getaway: Fire Island

Art Gallery: I really love going to the galleries in Chelsea. Steely Wise, Mary Boone

Museum: I love going to the MoMA. The architecture is really fantastic. I love the

Costume Institute too.

Store: Muji, it’s like no-design design. I love it. It’s like I can buy almost everything in the store. There are kind of things that are anonymous that are perfectly designed I think. I also love going to Odin on Lafayette Street.

Relaxation spot: The swimming pool, I go to the Y in Vanderbilt.

Basic Energy to pursue ethanol venture

Listed Basic Energy Corp. will focus on developing renewable energy projects such as a proposed bioethanol plant in Zamboanga del Norte and a geothermal service contract in Batangas this year.

“Basic Energy’s focus in 2010 will still be in biofuels and renewable energy,” the company said in a statement.

De Venecia-led Basic Energy is eyeing to put up a bioethanol plant in a 6,000-hectare land in Gutalac, Zamboanga del Norte. The facility will use cassava as feedstock. The company started developing the area for cassava in 2008 under unit Basic EcoMarket Farms.

“Cassava has an intermediate market and can be a source of revenue while the planned bioethanol plant is still being developed and constructed,” Basic Energy said.

The two other existing bioethanol plants in the country, San Carlos Bionergy, Inc.’s 40-million-liter-per-year facility in Negros Occidental and Leyte Agri Corp.’s 3.6-million-liter-per-year plant, use sugarcane as feedstock.

The company did not give capacity projections and a timetable for construction of the plant.

“Finalization of the plans for the bioethanol plant will depend largely on when a critical hectarage necessary to supply the feedstock requirements of a bioethanol plant is achieved and when the equity and debt funding for the project are set in place,” the company said.

Republic Act No. 9637, the biofuels law, requires all gasoline sold in the Philippines to be blended with 5% ethanol. By 2011, the minimum blend will be increased to 10%.

The firm will also start mapping its geothermal service contract in Batangas early this year.

“We shall be commencing the geophysics and geological studies in our geothermal service contract area in Mabini, Batangas in the first quarter of 2010,” the company said. “Drilling schedule will depend on the results of these studies,” the company added.

Basic Energy is also involved in oil exploration activities through wholly owned subsidiary Southwest Resources, Inc.

Shares in the firm went down by 3% to P0.0155 apiece yesterday. -- J. B. F. Santos

Sugar industry leaders okay importation
By Edgar Cadagat
the daily guardian (http://thedailyguardian.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=16688&Itemid=97)

BACOLOD CITY – Leaders of the Philippine Sugar Alliance (PSA) have approved the government’s plan to import sugar to keep domestic prices down despite the surplus in local stocks.

United Sugar Producers Federation of the Philippines (UNIFED) President Manuel Lamata said the PSA gave its nod to the importation scheme to bring sugar prices which is already topping P50 per kilo in Metro Manila.

Lamata said the importation will be done after the May 2010 elections, possibly in June.
“By this time the supply would have been limited and fundraising for election purposes would no longer be a possibility,” Lamata added.

Even if the government imports sugar before the elections, “there is hardly any supply of sugar, which is fetching abnormally high prices in the world market, because of the effects of climate change,” Lamata said.

Lamata said sugar planters, millers and traders discussed the issue of high sugar prices and lack of supply “and they agreed with the idea of importation.”

Sugar industry players said lack of supply looms in the coming months because of the effects of climate change and El Niño phenomenon.

Lamata said erratic weather conditions affected sugarcane growers.

“In my farm in Isabela, it has not rained for two months while there have been consistent rains in Bago and Kabankalan. It was raining in Bacolod yesterday but not in Central Negros. The cost of pumping water from rivers or putting up irrigation ditches is prohibitive,” he said.

Victorias Milling posts 25% growth in profit
By Doris Dumlao
Philippine Daily Inquirer (http://business.inquirer.net/money/topstories/view/20100115-247510/Victorias-Milling-posts-25-growth-in-profit)
First Posted 20:58:00 01/15/2010

Filed Under: Economy and Business and Finance, Trade (general)

VICTORIAS MILLING CORP. POSTED A 25-percent growth in profit for the quarter ending November over a year ago on higher revenue from sugar operations boosted by rising sugar prices.

The Philippines’ largest sugar company booked P356 million in net earnings from September to November, the first quarter of its fiscal year ending August, compared to P269 million in the same period last year.

VMC reported to the Philippine Stock Exchange that earnings from sugar operations surged to P500 million during the period from only P280 million a year ago on higher sales of raw sugar and higher tolling fees from sugar refining. These offset the slowdown in sales of molasses and lower revenue from engineering operations.

Total revenue for the quarter hit P1 billion, up by 31.34 percent from year-ago level.

Raw sugar sales surged by 52 percent due to the increase in volume sold as well as the increase in the average selling price to P1,249 per 50-kilogram bag (lkg) from only P930.69 a year ago. The increase in production also contributed to the increase in volume sold this crop year.

Revenue from sugar refinery also grew by 10.75 percent as the increase in tolling revenue offset the decline in the sales of refined sugar. There was also an increase in the average tolling free rate per lkg this crop year to P214.21/lkg from P211.24/lkg last year.

The average selling price of refined sugar this crop year also increased to P1,573.33/lkg this year from P1,280.31/lkg a year ago.

1st Half 2009 Performance

Negros Navigation Co., Inc. (the “Company”) posted a net income of P203 million for the first semester of the year 2009, up 50% compared to the same period in 2008. The significant improvement in the bottom line figures can be attributed largely to the increase in revenues coupled with marked decreases in both operating and administrative expenses.

Total revenues for the year 2009 jumped 7% to P1,035 million from P968 million in the same period last year. Freight revenues, which constitute 62% of the core revenues, improved by 27% compared to the previous year due to the combined impact of the increases in volume and rates. Cargo volume soared 11% due to the increase in capacity with the acquisition of two additional cargo vessels. Average cargo rates increased by 14% due to the improvement in cargo mix – now focusing on high yielding cargoes such as break-bulk and class A commodities. The passage business remained
challenging due to the continued pressures from the low airfares and the nautical
highway.

Direct costs and expenses of P787 million was slightly lower compared to the P789 million for the previous year. Fuel costs, which accounts for more than 40% of total costs and expenses, decreased by 10% due mainly to the declining fuel prices. General and administrative expenses were cut down by 12% due to the continuous stringent cost management initiatives.

Victorias Milling posts 25% growth in profit

LEA SALONGA'S NEGROS HOMECOMING

http://www.usls.edu.ph/gallery/2010/leah/leanews.jpg

http://www.usls.edu.ph/gallery/2010/leah/leanews1.jpg

Negrenses witnessed the international performance of world–renowned singer Lea Salonga together with 2007 Vocalist of the World Champion Reymond Sajor, comedian and actress Ai-Ai de las Alas and the Filharmonika Orchestra at the University of St. La Salle Coliseum last Jan.8.

Her concert entitled “Lea… Your Songs”, under Director Bobby Garcia and Musical Director Gerard Salonga aims to help raise funds that will support Gawad Kalinga in building more homes for the poor in Negros.

Lea arrived in Bacolod, a day before the said concert and had a campus tour visiting University of St. La Salle, St. John’s Institute and St. Scholastica’s Academy where she gave an inspiring talk on harnessing ones’ God-given talents and use them to help those are in need.

Lea’s songs did not only fill the hearts of the audience in the coliseum with melodies but gave hope to the GK beneficiaries through the building of houses and the uplifting of their dignities.
