I'm sorry to offend but very seldom, if not never, that I see people riding in a "sikad" going to SM City Bacolod. Not only that it is dangerous and unlawful, but I also find it inappropriate. :)

Check out the Southwing and Westown area. They are there, everyday (sikads wont be there if there's no market to avail of their services). Dangerous - it's a matter of telling the driver how to slowdown. Unlawful - then why are they there? Please, ask that question to BTAO, not me. If the "sikads" keep on coming back, then BTAO is not doing a good job. Appropriateness - Is that perception based? Because if it is, I don't think that's the right word. Remember... freedom of choice.

Next page please... Let's move forward...

Not really all (sorry, I have a different understanding of ALL kay for me Cebu only has the basic stuff that I want, so WV for me is in the tolerable convenience state). But it's more of living a more simple life. :-)

^^for me its laid back and life is sweeter in Negros. just curious what basic stuff that you want in Cebu nga wala sa Negros or WV?

Super Stuff I want (nga wala sa Visayas):
Marc Jacobs, Ben Sherman, AX, Taco Bell, Squid Balls sa EDSA and Rufino Makati, Park Jun, BK, DQ and a lot.hehehe
Basic in Cebu:
Bread Talk, M&S, Tony and Jackey (But may better option ni sa Dumaguete ang Art Box).
Pwede na sa WV, at least may ara:
Body Shop, Mooon, SM (lol), MoonTea, Kenny, Taters, SB.hehehehe

My favorites in Bacolod: Calea and Manokan.hehehe

Hmmm... Basic can be subjective. It depends if how you really perceive "basic". For me, Breadtalk is basic because its just bread. And i like bread. And its reasonable. So for me bread talk is not extravagant. Tony and Jackey is not extravagant for me, because they really deserve a 400 worth of haircut. You can buy a M&S ETD at 500 which is way better than the 400 ETD of Bench na 5 mins. lang wala na baho, so its more practical to buy there, right? The Manila stuff are extravagant, but its more of a reward for me, indi man ako gusto magtigulang na indi ko man ma enjoy ang mga amu na.hehehehe

So its like SB and Bobs, Bobs coffee is P80 while SB is P140, but SB has nonfat, and extra mint. so its better to go for SB maski mas mahal sya, but at least amo gid na ang gusto ko.hehehe and i think of the quantity, daw almost same price lang, mas gamay lang serving sang bobs mu na mas barato sya, kag mas mahal ang sb kay mas damu man serving nya.

So amu na, maski may mga stuff na wala gid sa WV, at least somehow may ara man na maka bulos ah..

You know what, kung feeling mo you deserve something good, buy something that can give you the permission to demand. Thats why I love SB diri, kay if I do not like my coffee, I will ask them to replace it, because I am paying 160, and the 160 should make me happy. Thats what I like about the SB principle, they sell the experience, and not the coffee. Unlike with other coffee shop, maski aplod da ya kape mo, ti anhon mo abi kay naubra na, wala na balik.hehehe

PH's first environment-friendly chapel built in Bacolod

—An environment-friendly chapel, solar-powered and constructed from indigenous and recycled materials was opened in a simple blessing ceremony yesterday in Bacolod City.

Located within the area of the Greenheart Hermitage on the campus grounds of the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos, the chapel was a collaborative effort of three Negrense artists who offered their talents and skills pro bono to build the “earth chapel” due to their common advocacy of protecting the environment.

The chapel structure was made of indigenous materials that include mud, bamboo, rice straw and stalk and cogon grass. Recycled objects including wine bottles, discarded tiles, discarded wood slab and other bits and pieces were also added in the structure.

Brother Tagoy Jakosalem, a Rekoleto friar and an official presenter of The Climate Reality Project, did the interior of the chapel.

He conceptualized and incorporated renewable energy into the structure, making the chapel true to form and function in its liturgical scheme.

"The chapel is the first solar-powered religious edifice in the country, it is envisioned both to have a sound spiritual and environmental atmosphere, LED lights are used to illumine the interior. Wine bottles are incorporated in the structure, natural lighting effects emanating from the green-colored wine bottles, serving as recyclable stained-glass windows," said Jakosalem, a religious environmentalist who was personally trained on climate change science by Nobel Laureate and former US Vice President Al Gore through The Climate Reality Project.

Sugarmen, Albee to meet
BY CARLA GOMEZ

Sugar federations, through the Sugar Regulatory Administration, will present their consolidated final draft of the proposed Sugar Act at the Nature’s Village Resort in Silay City today, Rep. Alfredo Abelardo “Albee” Benitez (Neg. Occ., 3rd District) said yesterday.

The proposed bill aims to cushion the impact of sugar trade liberalization in the country in 2015, when tariffs on imports are lifted, to ensure that the industry survives, he said.

Agree migs, I have nothing against Starbucks, I actually admire how they run their business. Indi man sila mag international nga brand if they are not good with their strategies. But that does not mean that they offer the best tasting coffee, nor does it give a person a reason to feel sosyal kun sa starbucks naka-pangape. Starbucks is just the "fastfood" of coffee shops

Hmmm, Starbucks, so-so coffee to be honest, maayo lang ang ila marketing strategy. It's like coffee for kids. Bread talk, so-so bread flavor, and heavily overpriced. Again as with any brand, it's just the marketing strategy working on your mind folks, don't be fooled

‘COA still deliberating
on Capitol-Ayala deal’
The lawyer of SM Prime Holdings Inc. yesterday said it does not appear that the Commission on Audit en banc has come up with a decision on the Negros Occidental provincial government’s sale and lease of its 7.7 hectare property in Bacolod City to Ayala Land Inc.
The DAILY STAR repeatedly tried to reach COA spokesperson Gilbert Kintanar yesterday but the person answering the phone at the chairman’s office kept saying he was at a meeting.

Kintanar had earlier said the COA was not delaying action on the Capitol’s request for its ruling on the deed of sale and contract of sale of its property to Ayala Land, which it submitted for review in July last year yet.

But no explanation was made on the delay in making its deliberations Monday night public.

COA Explains Delay on Capitol-Ayala Deal; ‘Still Forming Technical Team to Re-Appraise...’

After almost eight months, the Commission on Audit (COA) has not released its decision yet on its review of the contract between the Negros Occidental provincial government and Ayala Land Inc. on the sale and lease of its 7.7-hectare prime property in Bacolod City.

That is because, the COA-Commission Proper (CP) is still forming a technical team to "evaluate and re-appraise the value of the property" and to submit the findings to the CP for another deliberation, COA spokesperson Gilbert Kintanar said in an interview over Bombo Radyo yesterday.

Kintanar said the CP had deliberated on the said contract last March 19, and their decision was to form a technical team from their Technical Services Office to evaluate and re-appraise the value of the 7.7-hectare property.

Kintanar stressed that the forming of technical team to evaluate the property in question is a normal process done by the CP in this kind of transaction that involves a big amount.

This is just to ensure that the final contract in the sale of the property is in favor of the government, Kintanar said.

He explained that CP is giving utmost priority to the Capitol-Ayala deal but they have to do their mandate, by ordering the re-appraisal of the property.

"We are assuring the parties involved that we are doing everything we can to hasten the process," he said.

Kintanar said as soon as the CP receives the report of the technical team, they will set another meeting to deliberate on the matter. The next meeting of the CP is tentatively scheduled on April 13, he said.

the good congressman protests too much..

Benitez denies delaying COA’s action over land deal
REPRESENTATIVE Albee Benitez denied he is behind the delay of the Commission on Audit’s (COA) approval of the land deal between the Provincial Government and Ayala Land Inc.

"I'm not behind the delay. In fact, I want this issue resolved as soon as possible. I'm for the benefit of the province. I'd rather see that there is speedy resolution of the case but, of course, I also understand that there is a case now. We know how long it takes when there is a case," said Benitez.
Meanwhile, Benitez said COA is not really just sitting on the contract.

and then, seems like Benitez is now an apologist for COA...:ohno:.

This was the first time the Philippines was represented at the championships, now in its seventh year. Harland’s concoction scored 19 out of a maximum of 20 points. The gold medal was won by an entry from Singaporean Sharon Lee Puay Ming. The organizers received over 1,700 entries from around the world. THE Philippine Azkals, fresh from a historic third-place finish in the recent Asian Football Confederation Challenge Cup in Kathmandu, Nepal, will play China in a football extravaganza to mark Philippine Independence Day on June 12 at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.

Philippine Football Federation president Mariano “Nonong” Araneta told the Manila Standard that he is discussing plans for a feast of football during FIFA match dates on June 2, 5, 8 and 12.

Araneta said he plans to invite China for a game against the Azkals on June 12, with a possible game against Indonesia on June 5 also in Manila, and against Thailand or Vietnam on June 8, probably in Bacolod City.

Lawmaker to file ‘The Sugarcane Act’

“Remember we called it the Sugar Act and now we will call it the Sugarcane Act because it is precisely to enhance the value of sugarcane and how to increase the value of the product. That is what we are looking at,” said Benitez, who was with Sugar Regulatory Administrator (SRA) Gina Martin-Bautista at Nature’s Village Hotel and Restaurant in Talisay City on Wednesday.

The Sugarcane Bill includes the creation of the agro-economic Sugarcane Zone, Bautista added.

Under the agro-economic zone, Benitez said, sugarcane plantations will be clustered to form an estate so that farming will become more viable, considering that sugarcane is a plantation crop.

Bautista also said SRA is also working on consolidating the smaller sugar farms through cooperative or other scheme so that the cost of production will be lessened.

The need to improve the sugar mills as well as the proper marketing of the sugarcane products is among the salient features of the Sugarcane Bill which is being fine-tuned before it will be officially submitted to Congress.

Albee bill to boost value of sugarcane
THROUGH AGRO INDUSTRIAL ZONES
BY CARLA GOMEZ

Rep. Alfredo Abelardo “Albee” Benitez (Neg. Occ., 3rd District) is filing an expanded bill that aims to raise the value of sugarcane through the creation of integrated agro industrial economic zones that will not only produce sugar, but fuel, power and other by-products, to enable the industry to survive trade liberalization beyond 2015.

Martin explained that the integrated agro industrial economic zones will assure the sustainability of the sugarcane industry with incentives for upgrading and modernization of mills and the agriculture sector.

Other countries and firms want to invest in agro-industrial ventures knowing the potential of sugarcane for the production of ethanol and energy, amid the current rising fuel and power costs, she also pointed out.

Sugarcane agro industrial economic zones can be harnessed for the production not only of bio fuels and energy but of bio water and bio plastics, she noted.

She said 20 percent of the country’s sugar has been allocated for the world market, and only 70,000 MT remain to be exported for this crop year.

^^ sugarcane is really an industrial crop. In fact, we are already benefiting from it now. We now have the major distilleries, softdrink bottling, ethanol, etc. They just need to harness sugarcane and downstream industries more and improve efficiency.

How about candy factories in negros? It is mostly sugar anyway and it is cheap to transport anywhere. hehehehe.

Maybe we should start planting cocoa as well so chocolate companies would be interested on putting up factories here as well.

I fully agree with you migs. This is actually one of the plans by Dick Gordon for Negros when he ran for presidency. When you think about it, Switzerland is a chocolate-exporting country when in fact it does not have a single cocoa tree, nor can they grow sugarcane. Kaya ta gid ni sa Negros, all we need are investors, and of course a ready pool of chocolatiers.

actually we already had 2 candy factories before ( late 60's or early 70's) the Sweetcentre in Talisay and Marks (?) just across the present day PNP hq in Alangilan, ambot kon ara pa da ang skeleton sang ila building kay daw ginhimo na resto ( The Bonfire) anay, ang masubo kay naabtan sang martial law tapos nagka sugar crisis which brought the sugar industry to its knees, pero at least subong nagabangon naman ang sugar industry kag damo na ancillary kag downstream industries.:)

as usual dapat gid migs may incentives ang pioners. siguro mas viable kung expansion to supply the visayas and mindanao market just like the distilleries operating in negros now. may other advantages man kung sa negros sila ma operate aside from near sa source of sugar. Negros cost is lower than MM in terms labor (factory construction and operation) and real estate. and it is not totally greenfield site unlike if they operate in other provinces, in here they can still find good number of suppliers.

Korean Investors Eyeing Water, Power
By BERNIE CAHILES-MAGKILAT
March 22, 2012, 11:02pm

K-Water has expressed interest to pursue a planned $1 billion equity for different projects in the country while Youil Ensys plans to invest $160 million for solar-powered projects.

full story (http://www.mb.com.ph/articles/355143/korean-investors-eyeing-water-power)

hopefully dayon na gid ni ang first solar powered plant in negros and in the region

Korean firm Youil Ensys Renewable Energy Corp. has started the groundwork for its planned 50-megawatt solar energy farms that are expected to be completed in three years. Company general manager Gregory Pliny Lofamia said the company will build a 30 MW solar farm in Negros Occidental, a 10 MW solar farm in Bohol, and another 10 MW solar facility in Davao, for a total of 50 MW.

Youil plans to start construction of the Negros Occidental facility by the fourth quarter of 2011 or the first quarter of 2012. Construction of the Bohol solar project is scheduled for the third quarter of 2012, while the Davao solar farm is scheduled for construction by the first quarter of 2013. The company is in talks with Banco de Oro, Union Bank, the International Finance Corp., and the Asian Development Bank for possible project financing.

as usual dapat gid migs may incentives ang pioners. siguro mas viable kung expansion to supply the visayas and mindanao market just like the distilleries operating in negros now. may other advantages man kung sa negros sila ma operate aside from near sa source of sugar. Negros cost is lower than MM in terms labor (factory construction and operation) and real estate. and it is not totally greenfield site unlike if they operate in other provinces, in here they can still find good number of suppliers.

Speaking of Expansion, this one has just arrived last night, bottle washer from Italy for the 750mL expansion of Tanduay Negros. More machines are coming! More jobs for the Negrense.

Maayong Aga Bacolod.

Nice one migs.:banana: I assume Tanduay Bottling Murcia supplies Visayas area migs? I read somewhere that their Asian Alcohol Distillers in Pulupandan is providing 70% of all alcohol needs of Tanduay in Philippines.

ari gali article related sa above expansion.

THI is the parent company of Tanduay Distillers Inc., the largest rum company in the Philippines and the second largest seller of rum in the world. Tanduay owns two of the largest distillery firms in the country – Asian Alcohol in the Visayas and Absolut Distillers in Luzon.

Another P390 million is also being set aside for the installation of a 750 million liters (ML) fully automated washing and bottling facility at the Negros plant. The project also includes the construction of six alcohol tanks with a capacity of 300,000 liters each. The new bottling line will add 20,000 cases daily to the plant.

About P165 million will be spent to upgrade the distillery plant at Pulupandan, which has been on temporary stoppage since 2009. The facility used to supply 30 ML a year to Tanduay’s rum production requirement.
