The recent Asian Waterbird Census in Negros Occidental jointly conducted by the Philippines Biodiversity Conservation Foundation, Inc., Negros Forest and Ecological Foundation, Inc., Department of Environment and Natural Resources and Provincial Environment and Management Office affirmed the province’s importance in terms of biodiversity conservation in global scale. The findings of the survey may also boost the potential of Negros Occidental as an important birding site in the Philippines.

In Pulupandan, the survey team recorded a total of 38 waterbird species comprising of 2,851 individuals. This site accounts the highest number and population of duck species among the areas covered by the survey. Among the species recorded in this site were Black-winged stilts, Egrets and Whistling duck. The endemic Philippine duck has been noted also in Pulupandan wetlands. In San Enrique-Pontevedra wetlands, some 37 waterbird species involving 10,939 individuals were counted by the survey team. Thirty two species in these sites are migratory birds. Species identified in San Enrique-Pontevedra wetlands included Asiatic dowitcher, Chinese egret, Eurasian curlew, Far eastern curlew and Black-tailed godwits.

SA NEGROS FOREST
http://awoy.multiply.com/photos/hi-res/upload/RtF1ngoKCnEAADMLl9Y1

Visayan Leopard Cat
Local name: Maral

Scientific name: Prionailurus bengalensis rabori
Conservation Status: Vulnerable

Number in Captivity at NFEFI: 4

Description: Probably one of the smallest cats in the world. This subspecies is found only in the islands of Negros, Panay and Cebu. When a leopard mother is killed, the orphaned kittens are often sold as pets. They make look cute and cuddly like domestic cats, but it gets increasingly difficult to care for them as they grow and they often die in captivity.

Enrichment: The conservation center puts spices of cumin, allspice, cloves oregano and vinegar for the Maral to sniff. Leopard cats have the habit of sniffing around during their leisure time. Also, they hang sepak takraw ball on logs where they could play around.

Nutrition: Their daily meal is composed of pieces of meat or weeks-old mice.

Sure kamo nga si Margarita Moran? Basi si AURORA PIJUAN ang gina mean nyo. Since Au-Au Pijuan is from Negros while Margie is from Davao.

I am not aware if the Pijuans have jetskis and speedboats in Sum-ag River but it could be possible since I remember the Montelibanos have their small yacht dock at their small wharf at Mandalagan River (at the present site of Salvacion Center Bldg) and from there, a small rowboat is utilized to ferry its passengers (visitors/guests) to the old NOGCC at Capitolville. The Valderramas also sometimes launch their speedboats at Mandalagan River during high tide.

AFAIK the Pijuans operate the Sampaguita Hotel which later became the Sugarland Hotel of the Yusays. the Pijuans also once owned the property where Casanova School once stood, now Colegio San Agustin-Bacolod

I remember Sum-ag River having the San Miguel Corp. wharf wherein their barges load and unload beer to be shipped to Panay and Guimaras.

A fishing port also once operated in the Sum-ag River.

Cavite topped in population size

Among the provinces, Cavite had the largest population with 3.09 million. Bulacan had the second largest with 2.92 million and Pangasinan had the third largest with 2.78 million.

Six other provinces surpassed the two million mark: Laguna (2.67 million); Cebu, excluding its three highly urbanized cities Cebu City, Lapu-Lapu City, and Mandaue City (2.62 million); Rizal (2.48 million); Negros Occidental, excluding Bacolod City (2.40 million); Batangas (2.38 million) and Pampanga, excluding Angeles City (2.01 million).

The provinces with a population of less than 100,000 persons were Batanes (16,604), Camiguin (83,807), and Siquijor (91,066).

Department of Energy-Visayas Field Office (DOE-VFO) said, per feasibility study they jointly conducted with the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in 2011, Negros island has some 35 sites with the viability for the construction and generation of hydro electric power projects.

In an interview, Engineer Felix Timbal of DOE-VFO said that, of the identified 50 sites throughout the Visayas, Negros island counts the most hydro electric power sources at 35 with the potential capacity of 178 megawatts (MW).

Of the total, 15 hydro electric power projects have already been awarded to five power contractors, namely Century Peak Energy Corp., Renouvel Development Corp., Virant Corp., National Power Sources Integrated Inc., and PNOC Renewable Corp.

Of these projects, seven are in Negros Occidental with total capacity of 31 MW, namely the Hilabangan hydroelectric power project (lower cascade and upper cascade), Hamtican hydroelectric power project, Himogaan hydroelectric power project, Bago hydroelectric power project, Iglanggan hydroelectric power project and Malugo hydroelectric power project.

The eight in Negros Oriental with 73.7 MW are the Amlan A, B, C hydroelectric power projects, Balanan hydroelectric power project, Pacuan-Guinobaan hydroelectric power project, Siaton hydroelectric power project, Sicopong hydroelectric power project and the Okoy hydroelectric power project.

Most of the hydro electric power projects are of run of the river type, except for the Mabinay hydro power project, which is going to be a reservoir or dam type.

Still up for applications are the 11 hydro electric power projects in Negros Occidental with potential capacity of 61 MW, and 9 sites in Negros Oriental with potentials of 14,7 MW.

Engr. Timbal said that when all of these become operational, Negros will be able to sustain its power needs in the next 10 years or more, and could become less dependent on fossils fuel sources.

“Any group with the resources and technical capacity to develop these hydro power projects can easily apply with the Department of Energy,” Timbal said. (Karl G. Ombion)

THE 2010 CENSUS OF POPULATION AND HOUSING REVEALS
THE PHILIPPINE POPULATION AT 92.34 MILLION

Source here (http://www.census.gov.ph/data/sectordata/2010/2010CPH_reg6.pdf)

Cavite topped in population size

.

Six other provinces surpassed the two million mark: Laguna (2.67 million); Cebu, excluding its three highly urbanized cities Cebu City, Lapu-Lapu City, and Mandaue City (2.62 million); Rizal (2.48 million); Negros Occidental, excluding Bacolod City (2.40 million); Batangas (2.38 million) and Pampanga, excluding Angeles City (2.01 million).

^^^^^^^^^^
^^^^^^^^^^

Bacolod City had the largest population in Western Visayas with 511,820.:cheers::cheers:. Brgy Mansilingan is the largest barangay with 42,352 followed by Taculing.

This is very good and timing...with the proposal of dividing our city sa two districts. I hope ma approve before election para tanan happy:)

And one thing, kung manginit ang Negros sa mga trapo kag corrupt nga mga high ranking officials like ara sa senado makatay og gid ni sa ila nga mga votes.:lol:

Na kibot ako ang Sum-ag has only a population of 18,000 plus....nag decrease ang population sang Villamonte no?

I agree migs, it will make things more efficient kag mas ma dako pa ang budget per barangay. Pila nga daan ang sweldo sang kada barangay captain, plus allowances sang mga barangay councilors? Less wastage of people's taxes if we merge these small barangays.

Brgy 4 (18th Lacson Tourism Strip-Aguinaldo-PNB) merge to Brgy 3, merge Brgys 22, 23, 24 (Galo-Gonzaga-Mabini-Rizal)

But well barangay politics will dictate it all...you know...ang botante

nami na da migs...bal-an mo uso na sang una ang mga resthouse and retreat house-like facilities in haciendas in Murcia to those who would have a much peaceful environment than Mambukal Resort. and it serves as accommodation for the visitors of landlords and sugar barons in their haciendas.

Aside from Kaftrees, we also have Camp Shekinah or Hacienda Shekinah in Murcia.

Yep saw him featured in TV two days ago.
Thanks migs....keep us updated with your new pics from time to time :banana::banana:

Never said that Dockie,Mangkuta si RN.

BACOLOD City is now the hub for the Koreans who study the English language.

Bacolod Alien Control Officer Mita Chuvy Arguilles said the total application for visa extension as of March 31, 2012 is 2,326, with about 1,444 of them Koreans.

The rest are Americans, Japanese and other nationalities.

Foreign students who have applied for special study permits are also mostly Koreans who are studying English.

As of March 31, Arguilles said their office has issued special study permits to 6,090 foreign students, mostly Koreans, two Japanese, and the rest are Taiwanese and Chinese.

She said also reminded foreigners living in Negros Occidental to pay their annual registration for 2012 to avoid paying penalties. (CNC)

Property sought for projects

BACOLOD CITY -- The provincial government of Negros Occidental is scouting for a property to locate priority projects, an official said.

“The property should be accessible to the national highway, hospital, and public school, and should have water and power supply,” said Lucille Chavez-Pines, Provincial General Services officer.

Property owners may submit offers to sell to the Office of the Provincial General Services Officer in the Provincial Administration Center by April 11, she said.

Last year, the provincial government acquired a 150-hectare property in Barangay Sta. Rosa, Murcia, where it constructed the P20-million Negros First Ranch, which aims to upgrade the livestock industry.

A major property and infrastructure development also being pursued by the province is the ongoing construction of the three-storey Negros First Cybercenter amounting to almost P450 million on its property at the Paglaum Sports Complex in Bacolod City. -- NLG

Twin River Resort ni. Lingaw ko gani kung kis-a kay kung medyo maulanon nga panahon, ang mas dako nga river brown na ang color tungod sa silt pero ang gamay nga river, tin-aw giyapon, unless nag over flow ang dako. Makita mo ang contrast from afar.

Neg.Occ. getting popular among RP tourists, guv says
BY GILBERT BAYORAN

Negros Occidental is getting to be among the popular tourist destinations in the country, with more than 10,000 people from all walks of life visiting the Mambucal Mountain Resort in Murcia within four days, from Maundy Thursday to Easter Sunday.

“ This only prove that they really love our place,” Maranon said at the opening of the 19th Panaad sa Negros Festival, that was attended by about 10,000 people, as estimated by organizers.

Maranon said the provincial government earned about P1 million in just four days. “ This is unprecedented,” he told the crowd, among whom were mayors, vice mayors of different towns and cities, board members, councilors and Reps. Jeffrey Ferrer and Mercedes Alvarez.

The city of Sipalay, which is also known as the jewel of southern Negros, because of its diving sites, clean and powdery sand beaches, and hidden lagoons, also attracts about 50,000 European tourist annually.

The annual Panaad sa Negros festivities showcase the festivals of the province, its famous food, products and delicacies.

“ Let us continue our unity and help one another”, Maranon said, as he expressed his elation over the success of Panaad sa Negros over the years.

The development of Negros Occidental is as bright as the rays of sunlight at noontime, he added.

The 24 candidates for this year Lin-ay sang Negros were also presented during the Panaad sa Negros opening, that was followed by the fiesta presentation of local government units.

The theme of this year’s festival is “19 Years of Panaad sa Negros: More Food, Fun and Festival.”

Mambukal Resort Earns P1M from 10,000 Holy Week Tourists
Submitted by Danny Dangcalan on Tue, 04/10/2012 - 07:20 Danny Dangcalan Local News Mambukal Resort Murcia

The Mambukal Resort in Murcia has drawn around 10,000 guests and tourists in the four days of the Holy Week and had generated an income of almost P1 million, Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr. said.

Marañon disclosed this yesterday at the opening ceremonies of the 19th Panaad sa Negros Festival at the Panaad Stadium in Brgy. Mansilingan Bacolod City.

“This is unprecedented,” the governor said, adding that the tourists surely like the Mambukal Resort.

Mambukal Resort, which has an annual net income of P10 million, is always fully booked, Marañon earlier said.

It is one of the highest generating Provincial Capitol enterprises under the Economic Enterprise Development Department. This year, the Provincial Capitol had invested P27 million in the construction of seven new cottages with a total of 28 rooms.*
