Museum opens exhibit (http://www.visayandailystar.com/2010/April/29/people.htm)

The Museo sang Bata sa Negros Foundation Inc. headed by Sonia Sarrosa held the soft-opening of the Joseph G. Marañon Library and Exhibit recently, in Sagay City, Negros Occidental, a press release from Sagay said.

The guest of honor was Alexa Marañon Yupangco, granddaughter of the late governor Joseph Marañon, who said she is very grateful to all those who helped in putting up the library and exhibit to keep the memory of his grandfather alive.

Sarrosa said the library is a collection of pictures of Marañon as a public servant, and as a private family man, the certificates, memorabilia, and books that he received during his tenure as Mayor of Sagay City, and as governor of the province.

She also said that after he died, his family and friends thought of putting up this library and exhibit that students and other interested individuals can access.

Maranon’s deeds as an example of an ordinary person who tried to do things extraordinarily well, and that anyone can do the same if he strives to put the interest of others first, the press release said.

The library and exhibit, located at the annex building to the Museo Sang Bata Sa Negros at Brgy. Old Sagay, in Sagay, is now open to the public.

Lilibeth Cordova La’O, executive director of Museo Sang Bata conceptualized, designed and supervised the execution of this project, the press release also said.

The blessing was officiated by Msgr. Wilfredo Dejilla, it added.*

Day tourism in
Negros up 150 percent

The “Probinsya Ko Libuton Ko” of the provincial government has been a success, and surveys show that day tourists in towns and cities of Negros Occidental have increased by more than 150 percent, Provincial Tourism Officer, Jennylind Cordero, said yesterday.

Tourism awareness and pride of place has grown, Cordero said.

Considering the well-paved roads and accessibility of Negros Occidental’s destinations, plus accessible flights wherein one can take a fast craft which is just one hour away from Cebu and Panay, a tourist can also fly to Negros in the morning and go home in the evening, plus the long weekend holidays, she said.

Survey shows 840,805 day tourist or excursionist had been reported in 2009 compared to about 323,818 in 2008, Cordero said.

Packages for day tours include visits to beach and mountain resorts, museums, religious places of interest, sugar mill tours, sports events like golf, adventure tours like trekking, cycling, diving, attendance to festivals or simply enjoying Negrense delicacies and cuisine plus shopping, she also said.

The Negros Occidental Tourism Center in cooperation with the Department of Tourism and JICA is now preparing for the conduct of a new mode on survey of tourist arrivals wherein resorts and other accommodation facilities with LGU’s will be trained to have a uniform system of data collection and reporting all over the country, she said.*

History

Sta. Fe Resort & Convention Center is the first privately owned resort in Bacolod City having been established in the 1940’s. Sta. Fe Resort was originally a hacienda of Don Generoso Villanueva, Sr. He started to develop and landscaped Sta. Fe as a hobby and as a means to give recreation to his hacienda laborers.

With the implementation of the minimum wage law and recreation tax, the heirs of Don Generoso Villanueva, Sr., had no choice but to treat Sta. Fe Resort as a business venture. On June 23, 1987, Sta. Fe Resort was incorporated and its original incorporators are Gloria R. Villanueva, Nena R. Villanueva, Lilia V. Villanueva, Elenita P. Azcona and Alice S. Varela.

Today, the pioneering efforts of Don Generoso set the standard for the resort business in Bacolod. The tradition of providing excellent service and world class amenities at a reasonable price has been passed on to the heirs of Don Generoso who continue to keep his legacy alive and vibrant.

Funds generated will be used for the financial support of indigent patients admitted in the hospital.

Whatever amount is collected through the sale of concert tickets will be used for the sick and poor patients brought to CLMMRH, Dr. Ruel Jalea, chief resident, Department of Surgery, said.

Lizares, who is known for her efforts to raise funds for the sick patients, said this is another show aimed at preventing deaths at the hospital, and they are asking for public support for the concert.

Also supporting the cause are Surgery Department training officer Dr. Julian Raca, and chairman Dr. Antonio Vasquez Jr.

For ticket inquiries, those who want to support the cause may call Saltimboca at Tel. No. 433-8670.*GCT

METRO PACIFIC INVESTMENTS CORP. HAS bought a majority stake in Bacolod City’s largest hospital, Riverside Medical Center Inc. (RMCI), the fourth in its growing chain of premium healthcare institutions.

In a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange, the local infrastructure holding firm of Hong Kong-based First Pacific Co. Ltd. said it had signed a deal to acquire 51 percent of RMCI from the Torre family’s Torre Hermanos Agro-Industrial Enterprises Inc.

RMCI, also known as the Dr. Pablo O. Torre Memorial Hospital in honor of its founder who started it as an eight-bed clinic in 1954, was grown by the Torres family into a 336-bed hospital.

The institution also has a wholly owned subsidiary, Riverside College Inc., a nursing school with 2,800 students.

“We welcome MPIC as a new shareholder in RMCI as it will provide Riverside Medical Center access to the growing hospital network, management, and financial resources of the MPIC group,” RMCI chair and president Dr. Hector Torre said.

RMCI consolidated revenue was placed at P940 million as of fiscal year ending May 31, 2009.

The acquisition brought MPIC’s total hospital group capacity to over 1,300 beds. The hospital chain also includes Makati Medical Center and Cardinal Santos Medical Center in Metro Manila, and Davao Doctors Hospital in Mindanao.

‘Ang Balay ni Toto Kag ni Inday (http://www.visayandailystar.com/2010/Starlife/2010/May/16/feature2.htm)
by Tanya Lopez

Once upon a time in an island called Negros, an old Babaylan decided to leave her legacy behind for her grandchildren Toto and Inday. How can my grandchildren be acquainted with the memories of our ancestors when they would rather watch moving pictures and play with machines instead of listening to me? How can I make sure that the stories my grandmother told me, all which I have committed to memory, will not be lost the moment I will join Kabunyan?

So the old Babaylan walked and walked and thought and thought deeply. The old Babaylan looked up to the sky and wondered up the stars, waded through the shallow part of the river and observed the stream, meditated in the middle of the forest and listened to the sounds of rustling leaves and the scuttle of animals.

As the old Babaylan entered a deep cave and saw some strange markings on its wall. On another part of the wall are scratches with colors. And as the old Babaylan looked and looked, she saw bits and pieces of pottery inside the cave. Some with bones inside, some with pieces of wood carved into strange shaped objects. The old Babaylan thought it strange that when nobody is around - there were signs of life inside the deep cave.

Without knowing so, the old Babaylan was being followed by her grandchildren. Toto and Inday were wondering why for so many nights - almost 3 full moons have passed - that their grandmother has forgotten to call them under the moonlight to tell her stories of their old ancestors.

Toto and Inday followed their old grandmother when she went up the mountains to look at the stars, when she went to the river to observe the stream, when she went to the forest and sat under the trees, and when she went inside the deep cave.

As the old Babaylan looked and looked inside the cave, Toto and Inday became attracted to what their grandmother saw. Unknowingly they walked nearer and nearer and started examining the objects on the ground. Toto became fascinated by the markings on the wall while Inday tried to make something out of the carvings inside a jar.

Forgetting that they were supposed to follow their grandmother in secret, Toto and Inday started chattering about their new discoveries inside the cave. Toto pointed out that the strange markings told the stories of a family who got lost in the forest after they have crossed the river. Inday identified the objects as some part of ornaments maybe used for jewelry and some more objects which may represent toys

A bit surprised by her grandchildren presence and intrusion in her reverie, the old Babaylan instead of getting mad - became intrigued with the stories they were creating. And she realized that what they were saying were somehow related to the stories that her grandmother told her when she was small.

And the old Babaylan had an AHA moment. Toto and Inday were actually making stories out of objects some dead people have left behind.

So she thought… "I will build a place for my grandchildren. I will leave a place of memory so that they can visit any time they want to be with me. It will be a space of the collective memories of our ancestors, and the ancestors of our ancestors. In that way, even if I am no longer around to tell our stories, they will always be reminded of where they came from - deep from the recesses of our ancestor's soul.

So the old Babaylan started planning for her big project. With the help of her nephews and nieces, the old Babaylan started collecting objects that told of the stories of their ancestors. Then with the assistance of the men of their tribe - she started building a hut to house all these collective memories. The old Babaylan planted flowers and vines that their ancestors used for healing, for rituals and for special occasions of the tribe. Then the old Babaylan called for everyone and announced that they could now visit the "Balay ni Toto kag ni Inday."

Toto and Inday came to visit their "Balay" which houses the memories of their ancestors everyday. They brought in their friends and shared stories, exchanged ideas, developed friendships and strengthened relationships. With all these activities and experiences, all these visitors felt that everytime they visit the Balay ni Toto kag Inday, their lives became enriched.

So it came to pass that the old Babaylan joined Kabunyan. She left her physical world with the peaceful thought that the collective memories of her ancestors, and the ancestors of their ancestors would be protected and will live on the memories of her grandchildren.

And many full moons passed and Toto and Inday together with their peers and kin became busy with other things in life - like love, and family, and children and being able to finding some means to survive.

Slowly, the Balay which was home to the memories of their ancestors became relegated to a distant part of their minds. The activities in the Balay ni Toto kag Inday became less and less and more and more far apart. Very few people visited because no one was there to entertain and tell and retell the stories of the ancestors.

As more monsoons passed, the roof started leaking and the windows started breaking. The wall started to have holes and since no one was available to repair, the holes became bigger and the wind and rain started to come in. The floor started to rot and a wall suddenly fell apart.

Since Toto and Inday and their other relatives were too busy were their lives, they forgot about the Balay and the plants started to die. The objects were damages by the elements which came in and little by little the Balay - home of the collective memories of the ancestors of Toto and Inday, and the ancestors of their ancestors - started to disintegrate, and with it --- blown away with the wind were the stories the objects had to tell --- and the legacy of their past… and the soul of their people.

‘INTERNATIONAL MUSEUM DAY MESSAGE (http://www.visayandailystar.com/2010/Starlife/2010/May/16/feature1.htm)
Promote Social Harmony

When singer-composer and art patron Jose Mari Chan said in Bacolod City last month that the 'soul' of the nation is in its arts, culture and history, he was emphasizing the need to preserve and develop testaments of humanities through the preservation of museums.

Chan, chairman of the Negros Cultural Foundation, Inc., was among the key figures in the April 7 'Save the Negros Museum' press conference, an occasion which gave him the opportunity to underscore the appeal for people "to donate toward the preservation of our Negros Museum which houses the soul of our people…"

It was the same tone that Lyn Gamboa, NCFI president, harped in the same occasion when she acknowledged the generous individuals who have dedicated time, money and effort to keep the Museum open for the past 14 years. Recurring financial threats have threatened the operations of the museum that Chan, Gamboa and other foundation officials have been appealing for generous individuals to help keep it afloat.

Their appeal came shortly before the international community focuses attention once more to the value of museums through the celebration of the International Museum Day tomorrow. The celebration is focused on the theme, "Museums for Social Harmony".

The International Council of Museum, which is at the forefront of the global observance, has emphasized that "museums in the 21st century are at the crossroads of transformation in the global economy and environment and are in a position to address the urgent need for safeguarding cultural diversity and bio-diversity as the common heritage of humanity". The preferred futures across the world, ICOM adds, are focused on environmental, cultural, economic and social sustainability.

In the Philippines, the celebration will be centered in three areas, said Angel Bautista, chair of the Museums Committee of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts. Bautista said, in an interview with StarLife, that the celebration will be hosted by the Northern Luzon Association of Museums in Baguio City on May 24, the NCCA Subcomittee on Historical and Military Museums in Pasig on May 26 and the Mindanao Association of Museums in Cabadbaran, Agusan del Norte sometime in July.

The three major activities will focus on three topics - unity in diversity, museums and community and cultural diversity, Bautista said.

International Museum Day has been celebrated since 1977 to provide a reminder of the significant role museums play in the preservation of natural and cultural heritage.

This year Bautista further said, the IMD celebration hopes to bolster recognition for the museum's role in preserving natural and cultural heritage, provide opportunities for museum workers all over the country to meet colleagues in the field of museology and heritage conservation, raise awareness about the vital role museums play in observing difference and giving value to common cultural heritage and promote participatory democracy by bring together heritage resources and their neighboring communities.

The 2010 celebration also reflects the pressing agenda of the Negros Museum, which is along the promotion of productive partnerships between museums and the private sector on the areas of expertise, resources and opportunities.

Tanya Lopez, Negros Museum director, invites multi-sectoral groups to attend the arts and crafts workshop and the story telling sessions as well as poetry reading and performances which are the afternoon activities scheduled by the museum as part of the global celebration on Tuesday. Lopez also said admission at the Negros Museum is free on Tuesday.

Other activities in the country include a festival of indigenous dances in various parts of the Philippines to be staged at the Museo de Oro at Xavier University in Cagayan de Oro City. The Xavier U celebration, organizers said, emphasizes peace building as part of the social harmony thrust in the global celebration through arts, culture, dance and music.

The international theme also underscores the value of dialogue, tolerance, coexistence and development based on pluralism, difference, competition and creativity, ICOM declared, adding, "Fundamentally social harmony is to agree to stand out, look for common good but keep the difference".

In Malaysia, the day will be celebration with a national gathering of museum officials in Sabah, where the state museum draws huge crows year-round. Museums will be open free to school children in Singapore, where the establishments will be transformed into a creative playground to further attract youth attention to the significance of their cultural heritage.

Gamboa, in reiterating the role of the Negros Museum, pointed out "our children have learned to appreciate their parents and grandparents through exhibits and guided tours" through the museum, where artists have also interpreted the Negrense lifestyle through performances and exhibits.

May we ask your support to keep the blood flowing for the future generations, she asked as she reiterated her appeal, which was echoed by Chan in that April 7 conference, "We absolutely need to preserve and develop our unique culture, our arts, painting, music, our history and to pass them on to future generations. Our grandchildren and descendants will have nothing to inherit if we allow our national 'soul' to disintegrate. Thus, we need the help of everyone, especially those who have the means, big and small… Let us rally behind this noble cause."

Cool Business (http://www.visayandailystar.com/2010/Starlife/2010/May/16/feature5.htm)
Mary Catherine Abayon

Thinking of coolers on a hot, summer day?

If you're somewhere along C. L. Montelibano Avenue, chances are, you're familiar with 4Js Shakes and Halo-halo, a counter in front of a snack house across the entrance of the St. La Salle Integrated School.

Regie Saavedra, its owner, recalls how he started 10 years ago as an ambulant halo-halo vendor. "My start-up capital was P1,000 for the ingredients and about P5,000 for my trisikad," he said, as he recounted how he used to drive around the area to sell his cooler - a blend of ube, gulaman, sago, banana and milk, among others.

He said he even had to borrow his seed money just to start his small business. His efforts paid off and the venture started to grow little by little that today, he is selling not only halo-halo but also shakes as well as fishball and tempura.

He recalled God has helped him and his wife, Jusa, persevere despite their trials as there were times he wanted to give up because business was just so bad.

Part of their business success is their awareness on customer relations. A college senior recalled that he and his friends - then in their grade school days -- were among his customers when he started the business. We still drop by almost everyday and buy from his stall because, he said, adding, "Regie always wears a big smile on his face."

And as he serves his 'suki', Regie volunteers a friendly advice to his young customers: Be persistent in what you want to do. Push harder if you want to succeed and never doubt God's power and mercy to take care of you.

He is grateful to God, too, for the good health he has given his family. If it were not for His grace, we would have already failed in this business.

The ambulant vendor on a trisikad and his small business have now gone a long way. Now owning a motorcycle, Regie looks forward to a brighter future for his children. He and his wife are happy that God has helped them in their efforts that they were able to send all their five children to school. We hope to realize the dream for them to become professionals so that they can have a good quality of life and, perhaps, improve our business for their own future, they said.

Repost ko lang....

Gov. Marañon Gears Up for Tourism Development of Negros

By Carla N. Cañet

Governor-elect Alfredo "Freddie" Marañon gears towards the Tourism development of the province of Negros Occidental.

Marañon has seen the enormous potential of Negros in Tourism citing the beautiful beaches and natural resources that could certainly compete with other existing tourist spots in the country and the world.

There are a lot of concerns that can be addressed through a well planned Tourism development program for Negros as it will surely create and provide job opportunities through the services that it can offer to both domestic and foreign tourists.

Sipalay is one great city blessed with beautiful beaches and diving spots. There is an air strip there that can fast track the influx of tourists if it will become operational again.

He said they are already studying the option of making it operational again soon.

Normally, tourists do not like long trips and airports are among the necessities to make Tourism flourish in the province.

Kabankalan City is on the first stage of constructing its own airport. Sipalay has an airstrip that can be developed again to accommodate smaller planes for Tourists.

Marañon will work on these concerns so that Tourism will truly be among the vehicles of progress and development in the province.

There were Negrenses in Japan led by Mrs. Grace Alonsagay Horii, a Tourism Officer of the Philippines in Japan expressed their gratitude to Marañon for seriously considering Tourism as among his development agenda for Negros when he officially sits as the next Governor of the province.

Horii said that there are Negrenses in Japan who are interested in Marañon’s plan for Tourism.

They said Japanese likes Negros and they also like to visit beautiful beaches and places, play golf and dine with the sumptuous meals in Negros. But Negros should prepare for the needs of these tourists for hotels, services and places to enjoy and stay.

Marañon, in response, assured these Negrenses in Japan that Tourism will be among his priority development plans and programs once he sits as Governor of the province.

Marañon has proven his worth as a public servant and an environmentalist in his almost four decades in government service.

Sagay City, a place that gave him a break as a public servant now enjoys the rich natural resources of the Carbin reef which has been lawfully declared as a marine reserve.

All kinds of shells and marine products are available in Carbin reef. There are exotic shells that are export quality that can be found in Carbin reef and these are what make Freddie Marañon proud as an environmentalist and public servant.

He said that he is an Engineer and a politician by profession but environment has been his passion. Since he was in high school, he already started caring for the environment by doing tree planting activities.

Sagay also has infrastructure projects that have served and will continue to serve Sagaynons at its best.

The market mall in Sagay has been an envy to others because it is a well-kept public market manned by disciplined market vendors. The place is a semi-mall and a semi-public market. It’s well ventilated and it’s really clean.

They will also have its own state-of-the-art slaughterhouse where it can slaughter cattle fast.

Marañon said that if he can do it in Sagay, where the resources are not much compared to the province, how much more with the vast resources of the province? There are a lot of great things that can be had and it will truly be translated to job opportunities and livelihood for his beloved Negrenses.

Poverty is truly a serious concern in the province as he has personally seen it when they went around during the campaign.

Marañon won with a big margin of votes against his rival, former Governor and Sugar Regulatory Administrator Rafael "Lito" Coscolluela.

Marañon has extended a hand of reconciliation to his rival and to some of his family members.

"It’s time to forget and heal the divisions created by politics. It’s time to forgive and move forward. Politics is politics but relations should stay," he said.

Marañon has been Mayor of Sagay, became its Congressman and again its Mayor. But he will sit as Governor of the Province effective July 1, 2010.*

The original zipline (i think it was way back 2002 pa) was originally a short one found few meters away from the present. It was a favorite shooting venue for tv shows like Idol Ko Si Kap and Extra Challenge of GMA. It was just last year (?) when the admin decided to transfer it at its present site and extend it across the boating lagoon and end at the ISHIWATA Bath House Camping Grounds.:banana::banana:

Yep. dapat ma inculcate sa minds sang aton mga young ones ang ila "pride of place and culture" kay it is a known fact Negros Occidental pales in comparison to other provinces in the realm of historical milestones and artifacts (e.g. Manila/Intramuros, Cebu, Iloilo, Ilocos Sur, Batangas, Pampanga, Bulacan, Laguna, etc.). We are a "late bloomer" in developments abi so its good we showcase our strong point in history, that is, the evolution and the rise of the modern sugar industry in the Philippines.

Petron keen on supply deals for local ethanol
Written by Paul Anthony A. Isla / Reporter

PETRON Corp., one of the country’s refiners, is pursuing potential supply agreements with Philippine ethanol producers.

In a statement, Petron said the supply agreement is in line with its commitment to promote the use of indigenous biofuels.

Petron said it hopes this will further encourage additional investments in the ethanol industry and boost domestic supply.

Ethanol is a high-octane, water-free alcohol produced from sugar cane and other crops, and is used as a blending component with gasoline.

“We are taking the initiative to pursue off-take agreements with strategic partners so we can further increase ethanol supply from local sources,” Ramon Ang, Petron chairman and chief executive, said.

He added that the possible off-take agreements affirms Petron’s support for the local production of ethanol since it will drive capital investments in rural areas, create jobs and, more important, lessen the country’s dependence on imported fuel.

For 2010, Petron said it estimates will have to import about 60 percent of its ethanol requirements to meet the 5-percent ethanol-blend mandate set by the Biofuels Law of 2006.

With inadequate local supply, it is estimated that Petron will need to import additional ethanol requirements next year from overseas sources when oil companies are mandated to have a 10-percent blend in all gasoline products.

“The essence of the law is to encourage more investments in the local bio-fuels industry, but so far supply hasn’t caught up with demand. By going into supply agreements with local producers, we aim to address this imbalance and give the country a more stable and reliable supply of locally produced ethanol,” Ang said.

Petron is the only oil company in the country with an existing supply agreement with a Philippine ethanol producer, the San Carlos Bioenergy Inc. (SCBI).

SCBI owns the country’s first integrated ethanol and cogeneration plant with a capacity to produce 125,000 liters of ethanol daily. The company was also the first to purchase the first locally produced fuel-grade ethanol from Leyte Agri Corp. in August 2008.

Teleperformance to set up regional headquarters at Alphaland

By Doris Dumlao

MANILA, Philippines -- Global call center outsourcer Teleperformance is setting up its Asian regional headquarters in the 20-story Alphaland Southgate Tower at the corner of EDSA and Don Chino Roces Avenue in Makati.

The building is the first office venture of new real estate player Alphaland Corp., a joint venture between the group of former Trade Minister Roberto V. Ongpin and British fund Ashmore UK Holdings.

In a press statement, Alphaland Corp. announced that it had trumped other premium buildings in the Global City, Makati and Ortigas business districts to bag the Teleperformance contract.

“It was the ideal setting for our regional office primarily due to the location and direct access to the MRT," said Dave Rizzo, Managing Director at Teleperformance.

Teleperformance is a global leader in contact center outsourcing with over 100,000 employees in 270 contact centers spread out in 50 countries.

In the Philippines, Teleperformance currently has 7,000 work stations in six contact centers in Manila and Bacolod City.

but i heard the NNGP in Bago is producing only 4MW out of it's rated 49MW that's why the EDC is planning to transfer the steam turbines to the Nasulo Geothermal Plant in Dauin, Negros Oriental which they deem is capable of producing 20MW more for the Cebu-Negros-Panay Grid

Maybe because they can't push thru more into the National Park so they cant drill and expand much to the max......we can't compromise Kanlaon National Park. but maybe they would find ways to expand it in other ways. That's nice to hear that there is a 2nd geothermal plant in Negros Oriental

I know someone near our place working at NNGP and its producing 40MW out of it's rated 50MW, ironically they're selling their power in one of iloilo's cooperative coz our CENECO has existing contract with NPC.

Blow by Blow at Casino on Saturday

* Sports News

By Henry G. Doble

Special guest Gerry Peña-losa, former world bantamweight champion, will be at ringside to greet Negrense fans when the Boxing Blow by Blow returns at the Pagcor Hotel (formerly Casino Filipino Hotel) on Saturday, May 29. Eight professional bouts will entertain boxing afficionados starting at 2 p.m. as JR Eagle Promotions, in cooperation with Pagcor and Games and Amusement Board commissioner Monju Guanzon, give Bacoleños rounds of exciting and upcoming pugilists.

Guanzon Boxing Stable regulars Mike Españosa, Arthur Villanueva, Janjan Guanzon, Kevin dela Cruz, Ryan Sermona, Jerry Nardo, and Junjun Sabillo face equally tough opponents a total of 50 rounds in different weight categories if fights go the distance.

Undefeated flyweight and rated number 2 in RP, "El Matador" Villanueva will slug it out with Nikong Calamba of Butuan City in 10 rounds of the 112 lbs division.

"D Hitman", son of Rev. Henry Guanzon, will square off with Ranel Suko of Agusan del Norte in 8 rounds. The undefeated Jr. featherweight will use his 122 lb-frame and reach advantage to the hilt over his fellow slugger.

Another undefeated, "Tiger" Sabillo will encounter Mike Rodriguez of General Santos City in the 105 lbs. category.

The local miniflyweight is rated number 1 in RP and is expected to breeze past the Gensan slugger in 10 rounds.

Españosa is scheduled for 6 rounds against Ruben Magno of the Clavel Stable in Iloilo City.

Other 6 rounders, pit "D Great" dela Cruz against Jojo Arnado of Valencia City, Bukidnon while the Pride of Himamaylan, Sermona will try to brighten his name when he faces Rolando Omila of Midsayap, Cotabato.

The only 4-rounder is Jerry Nardo at 122 lbs. who will test the punches of equally-tough John Rey Solis of Tinagan Stable-Iloilo City. Solis will try to avenge his younger brother’s loss to Nardo in ALA Promotions held at the Capitol Lagoon.

Tickets sold at the Casino are pegged at P150 for the ringside and P50 for the upper box.*

^^and news this morning is that ceneco is looking at the panay coal plant to source its power from. :ohno: when in fact we have energy sources right at our own backyard. and take note and which they themselves fully knew that energy cost from coal fired power plant are a lot more expensive. so, where's the logic there. are the ceneco board that ineffective why they don't see this coming?

I know someone near our place working at NNGP and its producing 40MW out of it's rated 50MW, ironically they're selling their power in one of iloilo's cooperative coz our CENECO has existing contract with NPC.

^^another thing sir is that the bagasse fired cogeneration plant of First Farmers is also supplying its excess power to balamban, cebu because ceneco wasn't able to get a contract from them at the time also when ceneco has a standing contract with npc. well, now that we're experiencing intermittent brownouts, ceneco is desperately looking at other sources. this could not have happened had ceneco does its homework. there is seemingly lack of foresight from our ceneco officials.

sadly, that's not true. the NNGP even closed temporarily during the summer of 2008 due to insufficient steam in the turbines. That's also the reason why the EDC asked the National Government access to the Kanlaon Buffer Zone for more steam-hunting activities, but despite that, the NNGP is just maxing out at 9MW and with system losses a real figure would be around 4.5MW to 6.5MW which is a far cry from it's 49MW expected capacity.

EDC's solution? tap the 192.5MW SNGP in Palinpinon, Negros Oriental to compensate for the NNGP's shortfall for them to still be able to fulfill their supply contracts. the ILECO cooperatives of Iloilo is a major customer of Palinpinon.

and now, the EDC is planning to transfer the NNGP's steam turbines to the 20MW Nasulo Geothermal Plant in Dauin, Negros Oriental (the 2nd geothermal plant in the province)

What is happening is this, sometime, when the proposed coal fire power plant is primarily introduced by Ceneco, the site is the alijis ceneco compound, when it was decided to transfer to pulupandan, bcoz Bacolod does not want to go for the Coal Technology, Ceneco asked for support from Noceco to support the plan for Coal, Greenpeace, WWF, and the Educated Populace of the province, opposed that, this becomes a game of tug-o-war, between the interest of earthly needs and the good of the general public.

Of all Provinces, Only Palawan and Negros Island goes for the renewables.

EDC on their part makes the Bago Plant, more like a show, because their interest is the easy and dirty money of Coal plants. Another point that they would like to pin is the infiltration of the "Old Growth Forest" of MKNP, fyi for everybody, Negros Island is a hotspot for biodiversity, and it is a significant part of our heritage and Culture.
Speaking of identity, we have to protect what is left of us, we should not repeat the mistake of the past, look what happened to Fabrica, once there was Insular Lumber Company, the largest lumber company in the world- before, now, non-existent, whats left is just a humming sigh for recalling the "old glory".

Going back for the power generation, sustainables should be the priority, hydro (manage the water source) for potable drinking and farm irrigation, we are blessed for pete's sake, Wind, Cauayan and Pulupandan are the best spots. There are a lot of options.

More ideal is the Nuclear plant te be built in Palawan. 1 plant can slash 3/4 of the total power requiurement for 20 to 50 years, enough time to develop more sustainables to accomodate future plan.

Point is, I would never go for Coal. There is no clean coal, besides from the air pollution, mercury that goes to the waste water and other hidden loops are obvious, Plants in Taiwan does not justify the claim for clean, if so, then why Japan is not into it, so is Britain, even the US. For China, they need a steady "cheap" supply of power, because they have aplenty of coal, that is their case, not ours.

^^i dunno which figure is accurate but if we're to believe what EDC leaks to the media, NNGP's capacity prior to the buffer zone exploration is somewhere between 15 and 18MW. the reason why the plant's expected capacity of 49MW was not met is because of the clogging of wells by calcite minerals which prevents the wells to release steam from its source. we're not at liberty to know how much power the NNGP is generating right now after the buffer zone exploration but certainly i hope its way beyond what your figure says.

Havaianas: The Brand, Its History; Invades the Ruins
By Edith B. Colmo

Havaianas have been described numerous times as the best rubber flip flops in the world! They are designed, marketed and manufactured by the Brazilian company Sao Paulo Alpargatas S.A.

The superior quality flip flops are made of a patented rubber formula created by Sao Paulo Alpar-gatas. This 100% rubber concoction makes Havaianas ultra comfortable and highly durable. Havaianas are available for men, women and children (babies included) in the yummiest colors and the most fashionable designs.

They also come in classic styles that outlast any trend.

Many have attempted to copy Havaianas, but loyal customers of the brand know that there is no replacement for the comfort and quality of genuine Havaianas produced exclusively by Sao Paulo Alpar-gatas.

Havaianas were first created in the 1960’s with a Japanese sandal (called the Zori) as an inspiration for the design. The designers were so fascinated by the relaxed island culture of Hawaii that they named the flip flops Havaianas (pronounced as ah-vai-yah-nas), which is Portuguese for Hawaiians.

For decades, Havaianas have been a Brazilian staple. From the Amazon natives to the stylish elite of Rio and Sao Paulo, just about every Brazilian sports these flip flops. The dynamic creative team of Sao Paulo Alpargatas increasingly created various styles of Havaianas and the appeal of the brand rapidly spread beyond Brazilian borders.

Since their introduction over 40 years ago, more than 2 billion pairs of Havaianas have been produced, enough to encircle the globe 50 times if lined up heel to toe. The flip flops are now available throughout the United States, Europe, South America, Australia, Africa and Asia. The brand has a huge celebrity following: Nicole Kidman, Jennifer Aniston, Gwyneth Paltrow, Julia Roberts, Lindsay Lohan, Nicole Ritchie, and the list goes on.

It is the only slipper brand to be part of the much coveted Oscar Celebrity Loot Bag, a record four times. But the brand’s appeal goes far beyond celebrities, as around the world, Havaianas are top of the list for those looking for fashionable, functional and fun flip flops, regardless of who they are!

Havaianas have been launched in the Philippines in 2003 and had grown to become the premiere name in rubber flip flops. Havaianas has transformed local perception of slippers. These practical accessories are no longer confined to the home or beach. They are proudly worn anywhere and everywhere. Paired with everything from bikinis and board shorts to jeans and skirts and even matched with dressier pieces, these flip flops are now a wardrobe essential.

Havaianas summer ga-mes in the midweek and Punta Bulata was a gesture of gratitude to the Neg-renses by the Negrense distributor Toniette Lacson, for patronizing havaianas products.

But the event became meaningful when it hosted an all white dinner party at THE RUINS in Talisay. Guests were garbed in white and had a wonderful fellowship with each other with candlelighted dinner, coupled with a romantic ambience of THE RUINS, that gave more meaning to the Havaianas decorations around the area.

Event organizer In Touch Promotions of Dolly Dalum-pines has remarkably enlivened the evening when they distributed the awards to winners in the games at Punta Bulata. Everyone was looking forward to have another encounter with Havaianas fantastic event including some selected media personalities who were mum but just uttered "wow" to the events show both at Punta Bulata and THE RUINS.

Havaianas, the brand of flip flops for everyone’s meticulous taste, invaded THE RUINS.*

Roxas biofuel plant starts running in June (http://business.inquirer.net/money/topstories/view/20100528-272606/Roxas-biofuel-plant-starts-running-in-Ju)

ROXOL BIOENERGY CORP. (RBC), the bioethanol arm of listed sugar conglomerate Roxas Holdings Inc., expects to start commercial operation of its ethanol plant early next month.

According to Roxol Bioenergy chair Pedro Roxas, the company’s ethanol plant in Negros Occidental started commissioning last month.

“It is also worth noting that Roxol will be the first major distillery dedicated to ethanol production, which uses molasses as feedstock. Our molasses requirement will be sourced mainly from the sugar centrals of Roxas Holdings, the balance of which have been arranged with various other sources,” Roxas explained.

Roxol Bioenergy’s plant is expected to produce 33 million liters of ethanol a year.

The commissioning of Roxol’s ethanol plant will help shore up local ethanol supply, which falls short of the country’s requirements.

This year, ethanol demand is expected to reach 219 million liters, based on the 5-percent minimum blend with gasoline as required by the Clean Air Act. However, local ethanol producers can only supply about 38 percent of the demand or an estimated 83 million liters this year.

The supply will come from San Carlos BioEnergy Inc., which produces 40 million liters a year; Leyte Agri Corp. with 10 million liters annually; and Roxol Bioenergy.

Meanwhile, Roxas also said that the company and the other members of the Ethanol Producers Association of the Philippines (Epap) are in talks with the Department of Energy over how to price ethanol. Amy R. Remo

From the Main Thread:

‘No washing’, organic swine pushed for raisers, backers

A swine farmer in Victorias City, Negros Occidental, has developed probiotic swine-raising and is being supported by the Provincial Government to spread his ideas, a press release from the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist said.

Ramon Peñalosa of Peñalosa Farms, credits the success of his swine culture to probiotics.

His farm has been a favorite site of agri-tourists for its integrated natural approach, the press release said.

Probiotics are formulations of beneficial organisms and enzymes as well as vitamins and minerals added to animal feed.

It contains good bacteria that improve the immune system of the pigs preventing harmful bacteria to cause foul odor and diseases, and makes them “no-wash” farm animals because they can be left without regular baths, the press release said.

With this, the swine farm requires no commercial disinfectant as footbath and no antibiotics except hog cholera vaccine.

Peñalosa’s unique farm is propelled by more innovations like its low-cost pens made of semi-permanent and light materials.

He makes flooring out of hog manure mixed with rice hull and layers of biodegradable materials like chopped banana trunks, mill ash, mudpress, shredded rice straw, sugarcane tops, fruit and vegetable peelings, leaves, and weeds found in the farm.

Peñalosa is now a volunteer Magsasaka-Siyentista of the OPA’s Farmers’ Information and Technology Services Center of the Office, and is a frequent speaker in farming, academic, and business forums, the press release said.*

MPIC completes purchase of 51% of Bacolod hospital
By Zinnia B. Dela Peña (The Philippine Star) Updated June 01, 2010 12:00 AM

MANILA, Philippines - Metro Pacific Investments Corp. (MPIC), the local flagship of Hong Kong-based conglomerate First Pacific Co. Ltd., said yesterday it has completed the purchase of a 51-percent stake in Riverside Medical Center Inc. (RMCI), the largest hospital in Bacolod City, Negros Occidental.

MPIC purchased its shares in the 336-bed hospital from Torre Hermanos Agro-Industrial Enterprises Inc.

Founded by Pablo O. Torre, RMCI started as an eight-bed clinic in 1954 and has since expanded with medical departments comprising obstetrics and gynecology, medicine, orthopedics, ENT, pediatrics, emergency medicine, pathology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, imaging sciences, anesthesia, surgery and opthalmology.

The purchase, which was in line with MPIC’s bid to build the first nationwide chain of premiere hospitals in the country, brings the group’s total number of healthcare centers to four with a total capacity of over 1,300 beds.

With the acquisition, MPIC chairman Manuel V. Pangilinan will assume the chairmanship of RMCI while Dr. Hector L. Torre was appointed chairman emeritus of the hospital.

The three other medical centers in MPIC’s portfolio include Makati Medical Center and Cardinal Santos Medical Center in Metro Manila and Davao Doctors Hospital in Mindanao.

The deal also includes the purchase of RMCI’s wholly-owned unit Riverside College Inc., a nursing school with 2,800 students.

For the fiscal year that ended May 31, 2009, RMCI registered consolidated revenues of P940 million and an asset base of P911 million as against liabilities of P553 million.

MPIC is expected to perform better this year given the full year earnings contribution from power utility giant Manila Electric Co. and the steady strong performance across all its business units. Core net income is forecast to hit above the P2 billion recorded in 2009.

The group continues to be on the lookout for possible acquisitions that will help expand revenue streams, further strengthen its operations and prepare it for a much solid platform for growth.

Sipalay caves explored (http://www.visayandailystar.com/2010/June/02/people.htm)

The Sipalay City government and the Western Visayas Caving Association organized a caving activity dubbed as “Trek Underground-Caving and Karst Discovery” in Sipalay, Negros Occidental, recently.

Around 40 participants from Bacolod and Sipalay participated to increase their awareness and appreciation in protecting caves, a Sipalay press release said.

They also took the challenge to enter two of the significant caves in city – Mamara Cave in Brgy. Mambaroto and Matlag Cave in Brgy. 4. These caves were classified by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources as Class II, which suggests that its appropriate use is for ecotourism and scientific studies.

There are now 34 identified caves in Sipalay, nine of which were assessed with technical data provided for by the WVCA, the press release said.

This activity is in response to the duty of the city to identify its existing caves, and to raise awareness of the importance and benefits from caves and cave resources for sustainability purposes, the press release added.*

Silay City: The Paris of Negros

Written by Benjamin Layug / Photo by Cheska Layug
Wednesday, 02 June 2010 18:57

Silay City, known as the “Paris of Negros Occidental,” was once the foremost cultural center in the region, and its Kahirup Theater was the center of these activities. The city is also the birthplace of noted artists including architect and 1990 National Artist Leandro Locsin (1928-1994) and 1920s Hiligaynon playwright Miguela Locsin Montelibano (1874-1969).

It is also the birthplace of my late mom and my maternal grandfather, the late governor (1925-1928), secretary of Health and Agriculture, and senator (1951-1957) Jose C. Locsin (1891-1977). I have always long wanted to visit my mom’s hometown, and an opportunity to do so came during the eighth Locsin family reunion. Bringing along my wife Grace and my children Jandy and Cheska, we easily got there via the New Bacolod-Silay International Airport, now conveniently located within the city.

Silay was founded in 1760. In 1846 the cultivation of sugar cane made the town prosperous. Silay’s newfound wealth from sugar cultivation translated into the construction of many opulent ancestral homes, located mostly along Rizal Street. A total of 29 (some well-preserved) have been identified by the National Historical Institute (NHI) as National Treasures, my grandfather’s house (built in the 1930s, it is locally called Balay Daku or “Big House”) being one of them.

Because of these, Silay is now one of the country’s top 25 tourist destinations. Three of these have been turned into museums. During breaks in the reunion, with my Silaynon first cousin Neil Solomon “Solo” Locsin as guide, we got to visit all three. Before doing so, we dropped by the beautiful domed San Diego Pro-Cathedral, built from 1925 to 1927 by Italian Architect Lucio Bernasconi. It was elevated to procathedral in December 1994, the second in the country to be so declared. Behind it are the ruins of the city’s original church, now a grotto.

Balay Negrense, along Cinco de Noviembre Street, is one of the largest, if not the largest, ancestral houses in the city. It was built in the Neo-Renaissance style (1898-1912) by Yves Gaston, son of 19th-century sugar baron Yves Leopold Germain Gaston of Lisieux (France) who generated wide-scale interest in commercial-scale sugar cultivation with his horno econonmico, the precursor of today’s sugar mills. The 12-bedroom house, said to have been occupied by Japanese military officers during World War II, was later a venue for a ballet school run by one of the descendants until the early 1970s.

Abandoned shortly thereafter, it was later restored and opened as a lifestyle museum in 1987 by the Negros Cultural Foundation. Now a showcase of Negrense art and culture, it displays antique furniture and Gaston memorabilia. The museum boasts of a grand W-shaped stairway, calado, or carved, panels that served as ventilators between rooms, etched window glass, fancy-grilled ventanillas and sprawling gardens.

On the other hand, the two-story Bernardino-Ysabel Jalandoni Museum, at the corner of Rizal and Severino streets, is cared for by the Silay Heritage Foundation. Also called the Pink Museum, it was built from 1908 to 1912 and was declared, on November 6, 1993, as a National Historical Landmark by the NHI. Built with durable balayong, a hardwood coming all the way from Mindoro, it displays embossed steel trayed ceilings imported from Hamburg, Germany. It also features a fine collection of books, glassware and lace supplied by the Silay Heritage Foundation members.

The Ramon Hofilena Museum, a typical turn-of-the-century ancestral home near Balay Negrense (built in 1934), is our personal favorite. On hand to greet us was Solo’s friend, the 72-year old Ramon Hofilena himself. He personally gave us a two-hour guided tour of his collection of more than 1,000 works by Goya and Picasso, Dr. Jose Rizal and local artists Juan Luna and Felix Resurreccion Hidalgo, plus imported Chinese pottery, silver picture frames, antiques and a collection of small dolls (said to be the smallest in the world, you need a magnifying glass to appreciate them). The museum also houses the oldest printmaking workshop outside Manila, Silay Printmaking, founded in 1970.

On our last day, we visited Patag Valley, located in a valley 1,034 feet above sea level. Throughout the one-hour trip, we passed huge expanses of sugar fields. Sugar harvested here is processed at the Hawaiian-Philippine Sugar Co., the city’s lone sugar central. It has a 180-km rail network and some excellent old steam locomotives nicknamed the “Red Dragons” going back to the time when they were painted bright red (they are now blue-black in color). During World War II, they were hidden from the Japanese by running them on special rails into the forested mountains.

They include one 1920 Henschel 0-6-0 and six Baldwin 0-6-0s (built in 1919, 1920 and 1928). According to Solo, a whole-day ride on one of these would cost you P15,000.

During World War II, the valley was the last Japanese stronghold in the whole region. Here, 15,000 Japanese and hundreds of Filipino-American soldiers died. The Japanese surrendered after five months. Today a wide Japanese altar commemorates the last battle between the two forces, and underground, manmade Japanese tunnels can still be found. The valley is also ideal for ecotours. Dinky and Milou (our first cousin) von Einsiedel built a beautiful resthouse overlooking the verdant valley and mountains.

This was to be our base in exploring stretches of rain forest and some of its 300 waterfalls (which includes Pulang Tubig Waterfalls). The valley is also home to sulfataras (sulfur geysers) and endangered species of wildlife (including the Negros spotted deer). After lunch at Balay Daku and prior to our departure for Manila, we walked over to El Ideal Bakery for pasalubong shopping of Silay’s famous dulce gatas (Cheska’s favorite), sugar cookies, broas, guapple pie, pilarica, rosquillos and angel cookies.

ICT Month
activities calendared

This year's observance of June as National Information and Communications Technology Month is seen as a positive prelude to a stronger collaboration among stakeholders and more enhanced business climate for the ICT-BPO (business process outsourcing) of the country with the strong commitment of major cities and provinces under the National ICT Confederation of the Philippines, a press release from organizers said.

NICP Chair and Bacolod Councilor Jocelle Batapa-Sigue said in the press release that one of the major aims of the group is to foster unity and help develop key strategies in support of the incoming administration of apparent President-elect Benigno Simeon Aquino III.

The best time for all stakeholders to start talking about the direction of the industry in the next six years under a new administration is now as we celebrate the National ICT Month, she said.

The Commission on Information and Communications Technology (CICT) under Secretary Ray Anthony Toxas Chua III issued Memorandum Circular No. 2 Series of 2010 enjoining all heads of departments, bureaus, offices, agencies, and instrumentalities of the national government, including officials of the local governments, to actively participate in the observance of said month pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 1521 dated 28 May 2008, the press release also said.*

NN Freight seeing profit
thru ‘self-inconvenience’

Negros Navigation is seeing continued profits through its company philosophy of inconveniencing itself for the convenience of its customers, a press release from the firm said.

The company has emerged out of stormy waters after the Asian financial crisis in 1997 and the seasonal gains that it gets from passenger travel, mainly through the leadership of Sulficio Tagud Jr.

With a tight grip on resources and a no-nonsense approach to management, Tagud wrestled with the festering problems, outlined a practical set of priorities and made the employees and stakeholders toe the line with military precision, the press release said.

By 2007, Negros Navigation was making money again and had been consistently profitable since.

The citations and awards two years in a row from the local internal revenue district proclaiming NN as the biggest taxpayer in that northern part of the metro say it eloquently, it added.

Old-timers also approve of Tagud’s steering of NN as it was during his leadership that the firm was able to provide the employees their first bonuses in decades, restore the company to its former glory and still be able to do the nation extra service by ferrying soldiers to the battlefield or transporting relief goods to a disaster-hit area.

Banking on market conditions that saw cargo shipments delayed and the ill-maintained vessels of its competitors, NN created NN Freight to dedicate to the cargo business.

With investments on more ships and proper government regulation and approval, NN Freight has redefined the industry through regular scheduled house to house cargo service that is prompt and ahead of its competitors.

“We inconvenience ourselves to make it convenient for our customers,” Tagud said in the press release.*

15-minute boat ride from the city proper is the Sugar Beach - German, Swiss and Filipino-owned resorts line this sugary beach, which offers an excellent place for swimming, and various water sports activities.

Not far from the Sugar Beach is the Tinagong Dagat - a hidden sea sprinkled with a dozen islets covered with lush vegetation. The sea bottom is covered with patches of sea grass beds, with the shoreline lined by old-growth mangroves.

Punta Ballo Beach is located in close proximity to Tinagong Dagat- This fine white sandy beach is more than a kilometer stretch. It's the nearest jump off point towards the sea ideal for snorkeling & diving due to the rich marine life.

Going more or less 10 minutes from the Punta Ballo Beach is Campomanes Bay - The bay is excellent not only for diving but for jet skiing, kayaking, and all sorts of water sports. It has an existing port that caters to medium-sized sea craft. The enclosed shape of the bay and islets in its opening provide calm waters even in harsh weather conditions. Entrance to the bay is a wide expanse of coral garden with various species of corals and fish.

City won’t privatize 3 Bacolod markets
(http://www.visayandailystar.com/2010/June/08/businessnews1.htm)

The Bacolod City government has no plans to privatize the three major public markets but wants to study how to make them more efficient and probably have a better return on investment, acting Bacolod City Administrator Goldwyn Nifras yesterday said.

Nifras was clarifying a resolution approved by the Bacolod Sangguniang Panlungsod requesting the mayor to create a special committee to study offers from interested private consortiums for the improvement of the three markets, and other facilities in the city, like the Manokan Country.

The SP Committee on Markets is among the parties making the study since the city wants to improve its services to the people, he said.

Data from the Office of the City Administrator showed that several market stalls were closed and ultimately re-auctioned for non-payment of rental fees, and a continuing assessment is being made, but this had been delayed because of the recent elections, Nifras said.

With the re-organization of the incoming new members in the Sangguniang Panlungsod, they will have to respect whoever heads the Committee on Markets before they continue with the assessment, he said.

Outgoing Councilor Alex Paglumotan said he has requested Councilor Dindo Ramos to chair the Committee on Markets and Slaughterhouse on his third term because there are a lot of plans to be undertaken to ensure that the three major public markets remain revenue-generating.

He said earlier that the city had collectibles amounting to P27 million from the three major markets as of last year, in terms of market rentals that he believes may have increased to about P30 million this year.*CGS

Focus Pacific to expand call center operations in Bacolod
BACOLOD CITY, Jun 05, 2009 (Asia Pulse Data Source via COMTEX) -- Focus Pacific Communications is adding 165 more seats to its Bacolod call center facility in July, marking further expansion of its first and only site in the Philippines.

Dan Liljenquist, president and chief operations officer of the Roy, Utah-based Focus Services, was in the city Thursday to announce his company?s expansion plan.

He was joined by Focus Pacific IT Director Julie Gretchen Dizon; Councilor Jocelle Batapa-Sigue, chairperson of Bacolod-Negros Occidental Federation for Information and Communication Technology; and Ricky Monfort, owner of Monfort IT Centre which houses the Focus Pacific contact center along 22nd Lacson Streets.

?We are growing very rapidly. I signed the papers today for our third floor lease of our facility. We?re very, very excited about it. We think we will be able to provide more job opportunities for the people in this area,? said Liljenquist, who is also a senator of Utah.

The additional 165 seats will increase Focus Pacific?s call center seats to 375 next month, from only 25 seats when it started its Bacolod operations in 2006.

Liljenquist, who first came to Bacolod three years ago, said the expansion also means almost 200 new jobs, bringing its workforce in the city to more than 450.

Dizon said Focus Pacific trainees start with P12,000 monthly pay, and once they become regular employees after three months, they receive P14,000 to P15,000 a month, aside from rice allowance and college or post-graduate scholarships.

Liljenquist said Focus Services chose Bacolod for its Philippine site because their company feels the support of the local government to call center locators.

I'm very proud to be a part of the culture here. We hope we fit in nicely, we think we do, and we really appreciate the hospitality that everyone has shown us, he said.

THE US Embassy in Manila and the Lincoln Center in New York City are bringing to the Philippines the Mark Sherman – Tim Horner Jazz Quartet the week of June 14. The visit to the Philippines is part of the Asian tour of the quartet that includes Russia, South Korea, and China.

The quartet, which is based in New York City, is bringing with them their deeply-rooted post-bop jazz approach to original and standard jazz compositions. Their music is relentless, energetic, and brimming with improvisation mostly influenced by the music of John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, McCoy Tyner, Elvin Jones and Michael Brecker. The group has performed internationally over the past five years with numerous tours through Europe, the United States, and Canada.

Filipino music lovers will get the chance to experience the high level of invigorating musicianship and mastery of harmony and organized sound of the quartet as they perform in Manila and Bacolod City. Catch them live at Greenbelt 3 Park on Friday, June 18 at 8 p.m. and in Cinema 1 of SM City Bacolod on Saturday, June 19 at 6 p.m.

The members of the quartet, each with strong teaching credentials, will also be sharing their musical talents with young Filipino musicians at various workshops to be held at the UST Conservatory of Music, Ayala Museum and at the University of St. La Salle in Bacolod City.

CENECO Refunds PhP 38M to Consumers

In compliance with the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) order, member-consumers of Central Negros Electric Cooperative, Inc. (CENECO) shall receive a refund of Php38.4 million for the billing month of May 2010.

It can be recalled that in February 2009, the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) granted the National Power Corporation’s (NPC) petition to increase its basic generation charge by Php0.93 centavos per kilowatt-hour. However, due to limitations in its billing cycle, CENECO failed to implement the increase simultaneously with NPC in February 2009.

Since generation rate is a pass-on expense in the rate, CENECO implemented the recovery in June 2009 to avoid financial strain in its cash flow. However, in the eyes of the government regulator, the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC), any deviation from existing regulatory rules shall have to seek and obtain prior ERC approval. While CENECO maintains that it has the moral right to recover its advances to prevent its financial hemorrhage, it has to abide with the strict regulatory prescriptions.

The table below shows the difference of rates and adjustments applied to the April 2010 and May 2010 billings of CENECO to its consumers. The refunds were reflected in the May 2010 billing in compliance with the directive of the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) to refund the Php38M which was previously charged to the consumers in March 2009.

Rate Component Rate/kWh Rate/kWh

(April, 2009) (May, 2009)

Previous Years’ Adj. on Power Cost (0.0031) (0.0031)
Members’ Contribution for Cap. Exp. 0.1518 0.1518
Adjustment on Generation Rate (0.8009)
Adjustment on System Loss Rate (0.1014)
Adjustment on VAT on Generation 0.0302)
Adjustment on VAT on System L (0.0039)

Considering the limited space for the above-mentioned adjustments, CENECO requested for the merging of the last two adjustments, that of the VAT on Generation and VAT on System Loss, as what appears in the May 2010 billing.

CENECO management would like to remind its consumers that only those with consumption for the month of March 2009 will be given refund. Consumers with no consumption for the specified month will not be qualified to receive the refund. In the event that the refund is more than the amount of the May 2010 billing, the difference will be reflected in the June 2010 billing, and thereafter, until the full amount is deducted.

However, CENECO consumers are also reminded that it shall recover the said amount upon approval of the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) since the whole amount was already paid in advance by the electric cooperative to NPC in its March 2009 billing.* (Sulpicio C. Lagarde, Jr.)

The Jumalons at Bacolod’s Orange Gallery
by Dante Corteza of DZT
June 10, 2010

The famous father-daughter duo, Edwin Jumalon and Amihan, had a successful run of their side-side solo exhibit at Orange Gallery in Bacolod City with renowned director Peque Gallaga as guest of honor recently. Bacolod’s art lovers and collectors raved about their paintings.

The Jumalon Family whose house is an art haven itself in Pasonanca, Zamboanga City is getting to be known in the art circle around our country. Only son, Winner Jumalon, is a renowned figure in Manila and in international auction houses, honored last year as a Thirteen Artists awardee; Jana Jumalon-Alano, who creates bold terra-cotta sculptures, writes music and has made Dumaguete her home; and Lorna Fernandez, Edwin’s wife, has just completed her eighth solo exhibit at Gallery of Davao.

While the family of artists expanded their territories outward, Edwin and Amihan continue to plumb inward, plunging into the unconscious to surface with works that are compelling and relevant. Together, as fellow artists who share their love for the romantic and the surreal, they exhibit their solo shows, entitle Tinged Illusions by Edwin Jumalon and Queen Building by Amihan.

In “Tinged Allusions,” Jumalon’s 10th solo exhibit, Edwin continues to churn out visual images and styles with restless abandon. This time, still denying overt design and plunging into the absurd, he shuffles figures and objects together and paints them in wildly different styles so they no longer retain their logical meaning. Instead, the resulting associations create a powerful dream-sense.

As in his last exhibit, Jumalon incorporates the figure of a child in his canvases. We get a sense of nostalgia from the artist and the father over the loss of these innocent years, and he imbues children, whose senses not yet fully grounded in reality, with the gift of prophecy.
In the whimsically titled “But This Time You Give Me 13 Apples,” we see a young boy gazing at a vision of forbidden fruit. He contemplates a cornucopia of images, which include floating apples, a frog, a remote control and a faceless trio of women.

Visions of impending time are also hinted in “A Day in Bethany,” which hints at young girls awakening into womanhood. We see them walking in a garden of bizarre-looking flowers. We see a group of men sweating and lifting boxes as they are boxed themselves. In the foreground, we see a nude statue of a woman, a Venus de Milo.

In “Queen Building,” Amihan chronicles the clash of roles she experienced as a new mother and a mature artist, and personifies the inevitable battles as archetypes or daimons which have become her subjects for the exhibit.
She presents her all-female cast of muses, and steers clear of the expressionist style that has become the signature of most young artists. She has opted instead to present her work in clean lines and textures, like illustrations of the past.

In “Iron Maiden,” “Gatekeeper” and “Watchwoman,” she parades her female figures—victorious and imperial-looking, emphasizing animus and drawing strength from their qualities of invincibility and will power.

It is a proclamation that the artist is here, that she has been marshalling her forces, and that she has never gone away. It is here that we catch an inkling of why the show is called “Queen Building”: It is a metaphor of women’s roles and art, of the journey across the board to gather power, and to realize that an empress must have authority to protect not only her children and family, but the things which she loves. In her case, art itself.
