Manalili said 66 renewal centers are expected to be set up in SM business centers nationwide.

^^this is what I liked about SM may business initiative, they really know how to attract people by offering government services. if this happens, it will be convenient for professionals like me to renew my license but I still hope that the province will still pursue a satellite office for those who are first timers and other request. it will also decrease Negrenses travelling to Iloilo just for renewals which is terrible because most travellers are sea sick.

It just overflows, so the media is wrong in saying the dam managers are forced to release water. Nobody can prevent it from happening; it just flows out once the water in the lake rises to a certain spilling level.

We are blessed to be in Bacolod, a hilly place - thus the name, so wala ta mayo ginabaha. Unfortunately most of the cities in the Philippines especially Metro Manila are situated in low lying areas so prone gid sa baha. Add to that climate change and you will always see devastation by floods. I hope our government makes it a priority to invest in flood control projects which can also act as rainwater catchment facilities para naman sa el nino.

WHILE there is the enthusiastic mood of the groups that we see in Facebook of the Negros Agenda on Tourism and Alliance of Tourism Stakeholders who are all in unison to make a good face of Negros Occidental and Bacolod City in the tourism map, the efforts of private groups must be given notice as well.

Surely, not everyone knows that Bacolod City will be the venue of the 3,000 strong motorcycle riding delegates who will bring along with them their big, big motorcycles to Bacolod City, the likes of Honda Gold Wing, BMW, Harley Davidson, Kawasaki Ninja, Yamaha, Ducati and more.

If not all of the big bikes could bring along their big bikes, then just imagine at lease one thousand five hundred big motorcycles vroooominnnng around Bacolod and even up to Don Salvador Benedicto, Sagay and Kabankalan. These riders love to bike by the hundreds of kilometers distance.

That's why projects initiated by Gov. Maranon were truly laudable for the obvious reason that a greater Negrense majority benefited from it. Beyond personal gains, we are presently reaping the successes of the reforms and projects started by the late Gov Joseph Maranon which presently continued by Gov Alfredo Maranon Jr. :)

Good thing that many young Negrenses are getting topnotch training from esteemed culinary institutions. This ensures that Bacolod/Negros Occidental retains its status as a food and dessert paradise in this part of the country. :banana::banana::banana:

Engineering survey on fish port completed

The survey was conducted upon the request made by Bacolod City Rep. Anthony T. Golez, Jr. to PFDA general manager Edgardo M. Chu to prioritize the construction of a fish port facility in Bacolod City, particularly in Barangay Banago.

According to Macabata, the fish port in Sibucao, Barangay Banago was the most feasible for the project. The team will soon come up with a rehabilitation and expansion plan of the fish port in Sibucao, he added.

Rafael M. Salas Library opened on his 84th birthday

Salas was the first head of the United Nations (UN) Population Fund from its inception in 1969 up to his death in 1987 (UNFPA). Salas is an alumnus of the University of the Philippines. Prior to accepting the UN post, Salas was Executive Secretary to then President Ferdinand Marcos before a falling-out on policies prompted him to leave the administration.

Salas was a voracious reader who collected about 11,000 books from his college days at the University of the Philippines up to his death on March 3, 1987.

These books were passed on to the Asian Institute of Management and then to the RMS Library at the Negros Museum for its orderly upkeep. The books were organized by former Bacolod City Mayor Joy S. Valdez who is currently the Project Director of the RMS Library with the full supervision of Mrs. Lyn Gamboa, president of the Negros Cultural Foundation.

SRA Admin Martin Off to Thailand

One of the key points agreed upon both by Thailand and the Philippines was the formation of alliance comprising of sugar producers in Southeast Asia. Administrator Martin and Dr. Prasert were in agreement that such an alliance is necessary to provide leverage for Asean sugar producers against the volatility in the world market prices of sugar, particularly the New York No. 11 world raw sugar prices. It will also serve as venue for the sugar producing countries in Asean to raise and address common concerns affecting their respective sugar industries or sugar in general. As agreed in the meetings, the initial discussion on the Asean Sugar Producers Alliance may begin in November 2012 in Thailand and will involve three countries, namely Philippines, Thailand and Indonesia. The initiative shall be initiated primarily by the private sector groups of the countries.

The Thai millers, in addition to expressing support to the points agreed by SRA and OCSB earlier that day, indicated their intention to explore investment opportunities in the Philippines in the area of sugar milling, bioethanol production and commercial power co-generation. Thai millers have existing investments and interests in Laos, Cambodia, China and Australia. In fact, the largest sugar mill in China is owned by Mitr Phol, a Thai sugar milling company.

Apart from a Park. Which is found in the foothills of Mt Kanlaon. I think he deserves to have Paid Tribute like a Bridge named after him. Maybe the Bridge from Negros to Guimaras will be named after him.

He is a statesman. He was the man that President Magsaysay asked to run for president, he declined. He wants to live a quiet life.

The Ilog-Hilabangan Flood Control Project in Kabankalan is already existing.

Migs...we don't have much of the big rivers snaking across low floodplains, so not much of a major flood control. The nature of Negros rivers are steep, short, muddy with boulders with narrow straight channels....mostly prone to flashfloods only and not much of sheet flooding. that means floods dont stay for more than 24 hours (exception with Ilog River over Kabankalan and Ilog). So our flood control projects would differ. Most of it will entail dredging and construction of dikes to deflect strong currents and boulders.

Ang baha sa aton localized and limited to riverbanks and former swamps. Lantawa bala sa Bacolod kay ang ginabaha pirmi ang may dalagko nga suba with big residential areas around, and those former wetlands that were converted to residentioal or commercial properties

tani wala na may mabalabag para tayuyon na ni nga project.tani ang best interest sg pumuluyo anay ah.

Sitio Sibucao or Punta Sibucao is in Banago...sa unhan lang sang barangay proper where Orola built a coastal road and seawall during his term. dira na da tani ang masterplan ni Orola sang una to expand San Juan Street from Burgos St. (Mambuloc) all the way to Banago, then continue it along the coastline up to the mouth of Matab-ang River and connect it with Talisay with a bridge

may ara na da dulungkaan fishing boats pero informal lang, just like in Alcala Beach in Punta Taytay.

This scattered development is vital in the making of a progressive urban sprawl, like what's happening in Metro Cebu, Metro CDO and Metro Davao. This means indi sungak2x kg hakugan ang Bacolod hehe

Dako gd advantage sang Negros kay lapta gd. indi lang sa isa ka lugar kag mag pa gutok. What if bala tanan isa lang ka lugar, tanan tuod na tawo ma naog diri sa bacolod para lang ma bakal sang lapis,papel or basic needs. :) tapos ma gutok, ma traffic. pero if may ara sa iban na city, example ma lakat ko sa Cadiz, on the way may SM, may dulugan gd. Basta for me mayo gd na strategy ang gn ubra sang Negros. :)

Just got in. Bacolod City just activated Bacolod CARES to help our Luzon brothers. The city government initially pledged 1M in support but amount will possibly increase.

it's good to know that the development of Metro Bacolod is not clustered in one core city alone. We have Silay as the site of the international airport and soon an export processing zone, Talisay as the residential and commercial center while Bacolod as the industrial, retail, financial and logistics hub. I hope Bago will soon be part of the metro, they will make a good agro-industrial component. This scattered development is vital in the making of a progressive urban sprawl, like what's happening in Metro Cebu, Metro CDO and Metro Davao. This means indi sungak2x kg hakugan ang Bacolod hehe

Tsakto gid...Metro Bacolod will most likely be at par with Metro Davao and Metro CDO in terms of economic development soon.

This is what La Mesa's weir looks like today. As you can see, there is no gate; THERE IS NOTHING TO OPEN. It just overflows, so the media is wrong in saying the dam managers are forced to release water. Nobody can prevent it from happening; it just flows out once the water in the lake rises to a certain spilling level.

The Visayan Daily Star reports that Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. yesterday assured the mayors of Negros Occidental that the provincial government will buy another dredger to step up efforts to prevent floods.

“The $1 million state-of-the-art dredger that was purchased by the provincial government is presently dredging the rivers of EB Magalona,” Mayor David Lacson said.

After EB Magalona, it will be used by Talisay City, San Enrique and Pontevedra, the governor added.

“The backhoe of the provincial government that is also being used for the clearing of waterways will be used by Moises Padilla after EB Magalona,” Marañon concluded.

Rediscovering the food paradise that is Bacolod

I have been to Bacolod many times, mostly for shooting competitions and once for my Kangen water demonstration. I had never been there for any food-related business.

But just two weeks ago, I was invited by Café Uma owner chef Jomi Gaston to judge in the yearly Sabor Bisaya cooking competitions and Food Expo.

This was in preparation for the National Food Showdown in Manila. We were met and entertained by the organizers who are not only food production people and restaurant and hotel owners, but also die-hard foodies.

It didn’t take long for us to get along. These people knew all the good foodie spots in the province, so I got to experience Bacolod like never before.

As soon as we arrived, we were driven to one of the prime dining places in Bacolod, Aboy’s. I was surprised that Aboy’s had moved to a much larger and newer place; I remember that the old restaurant didn’t even have cemented floor or real walls.

I also remember the food to be simple but good. Aboy’s is popular for its fresh seafood inihaw. I also learned about the owner’s humble beginnings and the risks he took to bring his resto to where it is today. Aboy should tell his story more often—perhaps in print. It would be interesting to read about it while waiting for the food.

New heights

In the competitions venue, the organizers took turns preparing a buffet. The first dish I had was an authentic Bacolod Pancit Molo. With its kulubot wanton swimming in garlicky broth, it brought my molo standards to new heights. This came from Seabreeze Hotel.

There was also a thick crispy lumpiang ubod made by Bob’s Restaurant, with strong garlic dipping sauce.

I didn’t know if I wanted to try the food entries in the competition or just stay in the judges’ lounge. In the convention hall where the competition was being held, I saw how fresh piyaya was made.

A stall was selling delicious siomai and Lumpiang Shanghai made by Luigi Battistuzzi. He also made homemade sausages that were boiled, broiled, then laid into a hot dog bun.

On the first day of the competition, I took a cab to the venue. I wanted to have authentic Bacolod Chicken Inasal, so I asked the driver whether he’d had lunch. He hadn’t, so we both ate at Chicken Deli. It was good, but I was sure there would be better places.

I was right. The original Bacolod Chicken House version was a lot better, with a stick of inihaw na liver to go with the chicken. I love the dark meat. But since I wanted to serve the others first, I gave them the dark meat and I ended up with a not-as-nice breast meat. Pwede na.

We were also experimenting with chef Robbie Goco’s new diet discovery, crack wheat. It has more fiber than brown rice but fewer calories. Masarap!

Shaved ham

There were many dining places that deepened my awareness of good Bacolod food. I sampled one of the best cheesecakes I’ve had at Calea. I think it was white chocolate cheesecake.

The Museum Café, meanwhile, makes its own cheeses, mustard and ham. I loved the shaved ham here—smoked perfectly, and goes very well with homemade bread.

The ensaymadas at Felicias left me speechless—simply one of the best-tasting ensaymadas I have come across, soft, slightly sweet, moist and just perfect. I hope the owners make a more expensive version and top it with shaved queso de bola. The chocolate cake is also to-die-for.

I also took some chorizos home that were recommended by another foodie, Manny Torrejon, who grew up in this food paradise.

It would be nice if the Department of Tourism could organize cultural and culinary tours to all our provinces. That way, tourists and visitors will have the best of each province and will be able to tell others about the good food of our country.

Engineering survey on fish port completed

The survey was conducted upon the request made by Bacolod City Rep. Anthony T. Golez, Jr. to PFDA general manager Edgardo M. Chu to prioritize the construction of a fish port facility in Bacolod City, particularly in Barangay Banago.

According to Macabata, the fish port in Sibucao, Barangay Banago was the most feasible for the project. The team will soon come up with a rehabilitation and expansion plan of the fish port in Sibucao, he added.

Dako gd advantage sang Negros kay lapta gd. indi lang sa isa ka lugar kag mag pa gutok. What if bala tanan isa lang ka lugar, tanan tuod na tawo ma naog diri sa bacolod para lang ma bakal sang lapis,papel or basic needs. :) tapos ma gutok, ma traffic. pero if may ara sa iban na city, example ma lakat ko sa Cadiz, on the way may SM, may dulugan gd. Basta for me mayo gd na strategy ang gn ubra sang Negros. :)

ALI raises 2012 budget by P10 billion

Bulk of the new developments will comprise 50 residential projects, equivalent to about 25,000 units across its five brands, to cater to the different segments of the local economic pyramid or 25 percent more than the 20,000 units rolled out in 2010.

ALI plans to penetrate new areas like Cavite, Bulacan, Rizal, Pampanga and major cities in Visayas and Mindanao.

ALI launched a total of 141,000 sqm of shopping center gross leasable area (GLA) last year, including the expansion of Ayala Center Cebu, renovation of San Antonio Plaza Arcade in Makati, the retail component of Ayala Northpoint Technohub in Negros Occidental , Fairview Terraces in Quezon City and The District along Daang Hari in Cavite – which are expected to come on stream in the next couple of years.

It also has in the pipeline some 365,000 sqm of commercial leasing GLA for both office and shopping centers and two more Kukun hotels.

SM expansion ongoing

The ongoing expansion of SM City Bacolod at the north side of the mall complex is progressing with phase one of the building plans dedicated to the construction of a bigger SM Department Store that will open in the first half of 2013, a press release from the mall said.

The development is part of the P1.4 billion investment project that will also see the completion of the rest of the annex building in 2014, the press release said.

The new department store will occupy a three-story building and will cover an area of approximately 27,000 square meters, which is part of the 102,043-sq. meter ground floor area allocated for the whole expansion project.

BACOLOD City Mayor Evelio R. Leonardia on Wednesday said Bacolod is lucky to be chosen by the Partnership for Democratic Local Governance in Southeast-Asia (Delgosea) as the People Private-Public Partnership of Cambodia.

Bacolod is among the participants in this European Union-funded endeavor that brings about the replication of the best practices of the Asean countries Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, Singapore and Philippines.

"We have not asked for this. But we were chosen as the only city in the Philippines to have this opportunity to learn from our neighboring countries,” said Leonardia.

TOURISM and agriculture remain the top investment priority areas in all provinces and cities in Western Visayas Region.

This was revealed by Estela Paredes, officer-in-charge assistant regional director of National Economic Development Authority (Neda), during a news briefing on 2011 economic performance of Western Visayas on Thursday.

Tourism tops in the provinces of Aklan, Guimaras, and Negros Occidental, while agricultural activities take center stage in Antique, Iloilo and Capiz.
