bacolodchamp July 11th, 2008, 03:00 AM OTOP products displayed at ANP-Negros Showroom
Top products of various towns and cities of Negros Occidental have found a home at the ANP-Negros Showroom in Bacolod City with the launching of the “One Town, One Product” yesterday, coinciding with the celebration of the Department of Trade and Industry-led “Small and Medium Entrepreneurs Week.”
Engiemar Tupas, officer-in-charge of the DTI-Negros Occidental, said their agency, the lead implementor of OTOP program, is grateful for the Association of Negros Producers for giving the towns and cities the opportunity to showcase their products.
“This is a result of the meeting of SME Development Council. With the SME Week celebration, we thought of coming up with this small exhibit,” Tupas said.
“What is good is these products are already available here (at the Negros Showroom). They (buyers) no longer have to go directly to the towns and cities, and they can get it here at very reasonable prices,” he added.
OTOP allows local chief executives to take the lead in identifying, developing, and promoting a specific product or service which has a competitive advantage.
The program also provides a comprehensive package through services from LGUs, government agencies and the private sector, including business counseling, skills and entrepreneurial training; product design and development; appropriate technologies; and marketing.
The Development Bank of the Philippines has a credit window for OTOP entrepreneurs who need financial support.
In Negros Occidental, products range from delicacies and processed food to handicrafts, aquaculture and agriculture products to garments and woven cloths. Others are showcasing their tourist spots as their LGU's top product.
Bacolod City , for instance, has chosen giftware and holiday décor with MassKara accent.
San Carlos City's product is peanuts; Calatrava, mushroom; Toboso, pandan products; Don Salvador Benedicto, pineapple; Escalante City, danggit; Sagay City, squid rings; Cadiz City, dried fish; and Manapla, puto (rice cake).
Also, Victorias City features its Gawahon Eco-tourism; E.B. Magalona, blue crabs; Silay City, native delicacies; Talisay City, bamboo crafts; Murcia, gamefowls; Bago City, silk; Valladolid, hablon; San Enrique, kalamay-hati (coconut jam); La Carlota City, dairy products; Pontevedra, banana marbles; and Pulupandan, shrimp paste.
Meanwhile, Hinigaran has oyster sauce; La Castellana, ginger tea; Moises Padilla, organic rice; Isabela, abaca; Binalbagan, garments; Himamaylan, processed bangus; Kabankalan City, turones de mani; Ilog, oyster; Candoni, lime; Cauayan, corn; Sipalay City, tourism; and Hinoba-an, processed tuna.*NLG
bacolodchamp July 12th, 2008, 04:03 AM Zubiri sees high ecotourism potentials in southern Negros
By Antonieta Lopez
Saturday, July 12, 2008
BACOLOD CITY – Sen. Juan Miguel Zubiri vowed to work closely with local officials in southern Negros Occidental to protect the rich coastal areas of Sipalay City and Cauayan and Hinobaan towns, which he said have high ecotourism potentials.
Zubiri, whose family has roots in Talubangi, Kabankalan City, recently met with Mayors Teresita Bilbao and John Ray Tabujara of Hinobaan and Cauayan, respectively, and the heads of the coastal barangays on Danjugan Island in Cauayan to stress the important role that local governments play in sustainable coastal resource management.
Danjugan, which lies in the Sulu Sea and located three kilometers off Barangay Bulata, is a 43-hectare uninhabited and private wildlife sanctuary, which is home to 72 species of birds, 17 species of mangrove, 572 species of fish and 244 species of hard corals and other invertebrates. Its beach is also a nesting site for hawksbill and green turtles.
In 1999, the Negros Forest and Ecological Foundation Inc. (NFFFI) purchased the island and together with the World Land Trust, Land Bank of the Philippines, Coral Cay Conservation, Philippine Reef Reconstruction and Conservation Foundation and the provincial government worked on protecting the rich marine biodiversity in Cauayan, Sipalay and Hinobaan.
The group’s conservation program for Danjugan Island bagged the Best Managed Reef Award in the Philippines in 2000.
However, NFEFI chairman Gerry Ledesma said that while they have made breakthroughs in Danjugan, the coastline is still under constant threat of degradation mainly due to irresponsible fishing practices.
Zubiri said this still boils down to economics, explaining that the local communities need to have alternative sources of income and should realize that they have more to lose if they do not commit themselves to a sustainable coastal management program.
Dr. Stefan Groenewold of the German Development Service (GDS) cited studies showing the rapidly decreasing fish catch per fisherman. “This is reason enough to be alarmed,” he said.
Next to the Visayan Sea, the coast of Negros is very productive, he said.
The GDS is currently implementing the Southern Negros Coastal Development Program with the provincial government though the Provincial Environment and Management Office headed by Edwin Abanil.
The program includes organizing workshops on coastal resource management and planning, capability building and training.
Groenewold said that if the current one-hectare coral reef producing 140 to 350 kilos of fish yearly will be expanded to 2.9 hectares, fish catch would increase to 400 to 1,000 tons in southern Negros alone.
“It makes sense to work together,” he said, stressing local government cooperation. “They must realize that while there are three municipal waters, we are talking of only one ecosystem.”
So far, the three local governments have ordinances on basic fishery, delineation and coastal resource management.

As Kabankalan marks its 11th Charter Anniversary on Saturday, the southern city is focusing on the strides it has gained through the years that has made it attractive to investors and visitors. The Charter anniversary will focus on the theme, “Kabankalan, A City of Progress ”.
Kabankalan, under Mayor Pedro Zayco Jr., has been recently named the “ Most Competitive City in Western Visayas” in its category in the survey conducted by the Asian Institute of Management Police Center. The study classified Kabankalan as a small-sized city. It is the only city in its group in the region that landed in the AIM list.
The city government, in its website, underscores the steady growth of Kabankalan in various sectors, including economy, education, industries, transportation and local governance.
“Kabankalan has now become a shining example of countryside development that has been translated from the semantics of planners to a functional reality —the city now a model of growth, serving as an inspiration for other southern communities to also push for excellence,” the site further says.
Pre-Charter Day events have been calendared to include activities spearheaded by the Department of Education, Agriculture, Social Welfare and the Negros State College of Agriculture , the premier tertiary education school in southern Negros .
Activities in the Aug. 2 anniversary will start with a Thanksgiving Mass at the St. Francis Xavier Cathedral to be followed by the Charter Day Parade and Program, where outstanding farmers will be recognized.
Giving color and pageantry to the day is the 1 p.m. Udyakan street parade and dance competition to be participated by tribes representing the various barangays in the city.
Also calendared are the Mayor's Cup – Mountain Bike Race and the Mobile Passporting by the Department of Foreign Affairs.
Included in the pre-Charter Day activities are the age-group swimming competition, BMX race, school band competition and band exhibition.
Cattle Wrestling, a carambola, calf lassoing, slalom and barrel race, milk drinking contest, wood chopping and lassoing competitions as well as the kadang race, horse show and load carrying highlight the Agriculture Day activities on July 29 and 30
The NSCA Day highlights are the motorcycle competition, invitational basketball and farmers' activity while the Social Welfare Day will feature a retro-dance show, ballroom dancing, a cultural contest, father's competition, a shooting contest and the battle of the bands.
Reiterating the focus of this year's commemoration, city officials said: It is clear that areas in southern Negros are keeping themselves very competitive and an economy that is undergoing the tests of discouraging trends in international and national businesses and industries.

bacolodchamp July 30th, 2008, 05:37 AM OISCA selling silk at P2,200 per kilo
The Organization for Industrial, Spiritual and Cultural Advancement-Bago Training Center in Negros Occidental is selling its silk yarn at P2,200 per kilogram (not P220 as earlier reported).
OISCA-BTC marketing officer Myrna Ricarte said they supply silk to buyers in Panay, particularly, Iloilo and Kalibo, Palawan and Manila.
“We supply 85 to 90 percent of the local demand,” she said.
She had earlier said they are now producing an average of 200 to 300 kilos per month sufficient to supply the monthly demand between 200 and 400 kilos.
OISCA-BTC has its own silkworm breeding station, equipped with a machine that can detect diseases of silkworms, donated by the Japan NGO Assistance Fund.
Ricarte said they are able to develop silkworm eggs that are disease-resistant.
“We have good kinds of cocoon which means good kind of silk,” she said.
The Negros Sericulture Extension Project, founded with support from the Japan International Cooperation Agency, is considered the most successful so far, in Asia.
Silk production projects in India and Malaysia are being patterned after the Negros project, Ricarte said.*NLG

habagatcentral1 August 7th, 2008, 04:51 AM I'm smelling duplicates here....:D
Kimhan, why don't you just stay with your account since I think its not beneficial for you to use dupe accounts (or triple or already quadruple accounts)?
And if I'm not mistaken, its illegal in SSC to have duplicate accounts, so I suggest you have to choose among your accounts who's who or the mods will take action.
Anyway, as long as you play safe there is no problem.

BYAHILO August 8th, 2008, 06:45 AM reposting and reposting and reposting these info might be good on the first look but does not hold any value to search engines.
you are just simply duplicating contents coming from other sites especially the City official site.
this will hurt the rankings of the bacolod city sites as well as the other sites where you took the info.
i suggest that you just create an anchor text and link it to the site that has the list of hotels like the ones in bacolod city website.
Duplicate content is a big no-no for google. and well know that monst travellers looking for accomodations go to google to find rooms.

Scintillating Southern Shoot
FEATURES
Put together 50 models as well as creative and production staff and take them to Langub Resort, a fast-emerging tourist destination in Sipalay City for that Scintillating Southern Shoot. That's what the Bacolod Association of Models did July 26-28 in its most elaborate production so far following its mountain setting at Mambukal last year and its sizzling summer pictorial in Jomabo Resort in Escalante.
The shoot featured a collection of 10 themes, reflecting the creations of local designers and collections fro, Pale Bleue, Fetish and Urban Chic. The designers were Jan Jan Ditching and Kelly Cuachon (for bridal gowns), Silah Chua for groom suits, stylish wear by Arielle Apuyon and haute couture collections of Nicolo Yulo.
The Southern Shoot served as a reunion of sorts for members of three BAM batches – Kevin Zaldarriaga, Macy Dongon, Jeric Villanueva, Krishiel Katague, Jacky Acebuque and Nikki Drilon of the pioneering group who were joined by Jan Marie Vega, Nathaniel Sison, Katryn Rigby, Adam Nerpiol, Mariel Unson, Marty Laoang, Karlu Tan, Angelo Araneta, Tanya Lopigco and Reggie Valenzuela of the second batch as well as third batch models Ian Villa, Chris Abelarde, Al Abelarde and Martina Yusay.
The shoot was a joint effort of the BAM agency, the Provincial Tourism Office, the Provincial Environmental Management Office through Olive Seruelo, Mayor Manolet Escalante, Oliver Dondonay of the Negros Island Tourism, Inc., Jun Alejano, Robert Palic and Demmy and Ancai Pali, owners of the Sugar Beach Resort at Langub.
It was produced by BAM Manager Cleofe Tan with Sonny Cabahug as creative director, Gerald Dacles as photo director with Chuck Go, Edgar Pama, Franz Doctora and Coy Francis comprising the photo team, Carlos Durana, BAM talent agent, who did the models' hair and make-up, stylist Nicolo Yulo as well as production assistants Castel Ton, JP Alejano, Lino Pascua and Edna Sanchez.

Bagging Success
Bacolod-raised Rafé Totengco is living the American Dream as a much-lauded New York Designer.
During his high school days in La Salle Bacolod, Ramon Felix Totengco's fashion style would sometimes get him into trouble. In fact, the school principal once asked to meet with his parents to discuss their son's clothing preferences, requesting Totengco to "cease to display his wares" (i.e. bangles and bracelets).

THE BAG MAN FROM BACOLOD
By AnP
PINOYexpat of the Month: RAMON FELIX “RAFE” TOTENGCO
Fashion in the civilized world is a personal statement rather than a cultural expression. It follows trend, in which popularity is lost or gained. And when famous people choose to wear a specific style or design, a fashion trend may start.
High-end handbags and shoes are still one of the most attainable ways of enjoying designer goods without breaking the bank. And one of the designer bags that top many international fashionista’s must buy lists is RAFE.
Ramon Felix Totengco is the man behind RAFE (pronounced RAH-FEE).
Who would have thought that the designs of a man from Bacolod would be gracing the wardrobe of International fashionistas such as Kate Moss, Cameron Diaz and Helena Christensen, among others? Repeatedly featured in magazines such as In Style, Allure, teen Vogue, Redbook, People, Cosmopolitan and Glamour, RAFE has enjoyed awe-inspiring success in the International fashion scene.
Born in Bacolod, Rafe moved to Manila and started a fashion label for Sari-Sari at the age of 18. Sans formal fashion training, he turned Schizo into a successful clothing and accessories métier. After several years of designing and dressing up the same people in the same circles, he yearned for more. He craved for the challenge and the possibilities that New York had to offer.
On the way to his dream, Rafe enrolled in fashion design at New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology. And in 1995, after working his way in and around a number of companies, he started RAFE New York.
Bags and Accessories under the label RAFE New York has earned International acclaim. His collections are sold in 250 trendy stores worldwide; “bags and shoes that range from sweet and innocent to sexy; from soft to structured; from understated to loud”, as reported by the press.
“While every Rafe handbag or shoe carries that unique sensibility that is distinctly Rafe, nothing compares with entering a Rafe New York store and seeing the full range of offerings to fully understand the Rafe aesthetic. Lush with detail and vibrant color, an exuberant mix of clean classicism folded into wildly eclectic influences, you get the complete story of just what it is that makes a fashionable lifestyle uniquely Rafe.”
Recognition back home
And back home, Rafe’s talent has also been recognized. He was given the Ten Outstanding Young Men (TOYM) award for Fashion Design back in 2002. The irony of the fact that he had to leave his own country in order to be recognized is not lost on Rafe.
In spring of 2004, Rafe launched his collection with shoes and bags which were inspired and named after 11 Filipinas. This collection was designed with the following friends and acquaintances in mind: Felecia Atienza, Tina Maristela-Ocampo, TingTing Cojuangco, Rissa Samson, Bea Valdes, Pauline Suaco-Juan, Mandy dela Rama-Santos, Lizzie Zobel, Tricia Cu-Unjieng, Celine Lopez, and Tessa Prieto-Valdes. At present, Rafe collections are still exclusively available at MIX boutique in Greenbelt.
Because of his schedule and the fact that his immediate family lives in the US, Rafe has not been back to Philippine soil in a few years. Does he miss it, I asked. “The last time I was home for 10 days I saw different people for breakfast, lunch, dinner and that still was not enough. I miss the food too. There's nothing like Bacolod Inasal and Pinoy mangos. You just can't get it anywhere else. There's no place like home.”
His advice to budding designers
Obviously, it takes a lot more for one to break into the International Fashion scene. And in Rafe’s opinion, travelling would help a lot. “See what other markets are doing. Plan where you want to break into first. New York is vastly different from Tokyo from Paris.”
And it’s not just a matter of being creative and designing for every season. “Study your competitor's pricing. You can't out price yourself out of your category. Determine what your niche is. What sets you apart from what is already in the market? Do some networking and make sure you connect with people who can help you sell your product who are based in those cities and who are qualified to do so. Have a plan and stick to it but also be flexible. Always have a plan B. Lastly, be patient. Nothing happens overnight,” Rafe advised.
In the future, Rafe plans to open more stores, explore relevant brand extensions and maybe even go into clothing again. “Full circle,” he said. “Hey, you never know. I want RAFE to be a lifestyle brand.”
Rafe is the epitome of a successful dreamer -- and he hasn't stopped dreaming. He will continue to do what he does best, and dreams of doing even bigger things. He is truly someone we ALL should emulate. No doubt, a Filipino we can be proud of.

Sister Act
Bayo's Lynn and Corcor Dizon have transformed their love for shopping into a proudly Filipino fashion label.
Bayo has been dressing up young women in classic feminine styles for more than a decade. But despite its steady success, Diana Lynn Dizon-Agustin admits that as late as 2001, Bayo was still just one of the many local fashion brands catering to this sought-after market.
BAYO STORY
Bayo started out as a made-to-measure dress shop in Makati. The need to expand grew bigger when Bayo launched its ready-to-wear line. In 1992, the growing demand triggered the establishment of Lyncor, Inc., then a manufacturing firm, to support Bayo.
“Bayo,” an ilonggo term which means, “dress” in English was chosen by the owners of the company since they are from Bacolod.

jaywalker August 12th, 2008, 04:47 PM UDYAKAN FESTIVAL FOCUS
Creative folk dancing
Creative folk dancing, with the production design focused on the ‘patadyong’ took the center stage in the Udyakan competition held as a highlight of the 11th Charter Day celebration of Kabankalan City on Aug. 2. Three collegiate contingents — Fortress College, Negros State College of Agriculture and Kabankalan Catholic College – emerged the three top performing groups, with Fortress receiving P30,000, NSCA P20,000 and KCC P10,000 and trophies.
The Fortress performance was adjudged best in choreography, KCC as best in costume and the group from Florentino Galang National High School taking the best in dance parade special award.
Seven other groups participated in the competition – Bantayan National High School, Binicuil NHS – Main as well as its Talubangi and Poblacion Extension schools, Tabugon NHS, and Tapi NHS.
Maeng Java, Udyakan Committee consultant, said the dance was based on music noted by Armando Bañres of barangay Binicuil. He added that the festival, once part of the January Sinulog festivities and spearheaded by the department of Education, has become part of the city Charter Day celebration for the past three years. It is managed by the Kabanklan City Cultural and Tourism Foundation, Inc., which is headed by Dr. Enigrado Legislador Sr. and the city government under Mayor Pedro Zayco Jr., who distributed the prizes to the winners

Is it like:

thanks @boy muscovado :) actually my friends are asking for that pic. :) they will show it to their friends in the states :) gusto nila e himoon pet :) gusto niya makadakup isa :) hahahaha
most of the photos are nostalgic :) pero i dont know why ruins in particular...e PM lang sa akon ang sabat a :)
Yup Mount Kanlandog...a small mountain between Mt Kanlaon and Mt Mandalagan (Marapara Mountain Range) that plays a lot of important roles.
It houses all the transmitters of TV Networks in Bacolod City. Remember that NPA raid in the 80's when the ECE's of the Kanlandog transmitters were held captive in their posts?...he hehehe
Its also the famous crash site of a PAL DC-3 from Cebu to Bacolod sometime in 1963 (year uncertain) that killed all passengers and crew. Also a crash site of a private Cessna of a Bacoleño pilot (Lacson ang surname) in the 70's
Oy, may rabies ang Phil Flying Fox...be careful

RP’s Bayo plans outlet in Malaysia
By Ma. Elisa P. Osorio
Thursday, August 14, 2008
Ladies clothing line Bayo is looking at joining other local fashion brands that have successfully penetrated the international market as it looks at opening a store in Malaysia.
“The local fashion brands are making a name for themselves overseas,” Samie Lim, Philippine Franchising Association (PFA) chairman emeritus said in an interview.
Lim said Bayo is now in the process of studying its prospects in Malaysia.
According to Lim, they have been helping companies who would like to extend their franchise outside the Philippines.
Lim said local fashion brands that are already present in the international scene are Kamiseta, Bench, Penshoppe and Island Souvenirs.
Meanwhile, more Filipinos are expected to venture into their own businesses this year despite the perceived slowdown in the local economy.
“The number of franchisers are expected to increase by 20 percent this year,” Lim said.
According to Lim, 10 percent of those who will venture into franchising are overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) or their families.
Other people who obtain franchises are the retirees and fresh graduates from De La Salle University and other colleges.
“Some of the fresh graduates from schools like La Salle feel that the jobs available do not suit them so they just venture on their own,” Lim explained.
With regards to retirees, Lim said many companies are cutting cost by offering retirement packages to executives. This creates a new market of retirees who do not want to stop working yet.
“These people feel that they can be successful in franchising because they have the money, they have the time and they have the connections,” Lim noted.
Lim said that the trend in franchising has already shifted. Before, food commanded 70 percent of the market, now it has been reduced to 40 percent. The other 40 percent is for products while the remaining 20 percent is for services.
“We expect services like spas and salons to grow even further,” he said.
Earlier, a study by the University of Asia and the Pacific said the franchising sector continues to be an important driver of the economy.
Franchising has accounted for five percent of the gross domestic product (GDP) of the country since 2005.

The sweet and green urban garden
By Luci Lizares
WHEN I did my maiden television show “Luci,” I dedicated a segment interviewing Millie Kilayko and Tima Lacson in Sweet Greens. They were also in their infant stage and I was a struggling TV host.
But that was a few years ago and Sweet Greens has grown sweeter and greener and has in fact made some renovations. Just recently, the public was treated to an evening of live music to feature its expanded facilities as well as its enhanced and exciting menu.
One of Europe's city charms is to be dining and having coffee al fresco. That charm can now be enjoyed in the new Sweet Greens. From every area of the restaurant, one can view the street and its gardens.
Two new function rooms have been constructed to accommodate 30-35 people and another for 60. The growing number of people now who transact business over lunch, dinner or coffee has inspired the enterprising duo to realize this.
Romance always fills the air and more so when a courtyard has a cascading fountain.
While a concert was the expected order of the evening headed by "music enthusiast forever" Bitay Lacson, soon to stand will be a 500+sq.m. lawn with a built-in stage for outdoor concerts, weddings and parties.
On its menu, Tima and Millie have always been innovative. They chose to serve favorite family recipes mostly traditional native delicacies with creative twists.
Fast becoming a popular ordered item is the crispy pata of Tito Ed Locsin and Millie.
Tito Ed cures the pork knuckles to a pink like ham, then Millie adds her own element of flavors and an interesting and savory crispy pata is the muy delicioso result.
Sweet Green's pitaw and fried chicken are also fast becoming favorites.
Tima and discounting husband Bitay's contribution have come out with a new version of the now classic Papa Daniel bangus - this time from smoked bangus fillet.
It is a bottled goodie and can be eaten from the bottle or onto a sizzling plate.
For chitchiria lovers, it is a great spread and can also be used as a base for pasta, salads etc.
Another innovation in the exciting new menu is their seven ways of eating inasal-bordering from classic inasal served either grilled or sizzling or dashed into a salad, pasta or croquette or blended into a pâté or having its slivers in soup or as part of a wrap inspired by the way Peking duck is served. The last is my favorite gid!!!
While talking about all these is making my mouth water, the best way to enjoy all these is really to savor all these pleasures in the urban garden at the heart of the city -- that is Sweet Greens.

Huwag smallin ang Check Inn.Just check it for yourself.Their staff can give you a free viewing of their rooms upon request. It's far from being a motel type. The rooms starts from 2nd til 4th floor ang reception lang ara sa ground floor(kag elevator is available)and beside check inn is for those who can't afford to stay the likes of Sylvia Manor or L'fisher.
Medical reps from Manila and Cebu stayed with them and even tourist both local and foriegn.May mga long staying guest sila mostly foriegners.Maybe you should check out with Blue Guy from SM who stay with them during the opening stage of SM City Bacolod.
I must say Check Inn is a good choice for budget travellers.

jaywalker August 23rd, 2008, 06:31 AM EB Magalona crab sanctuary eyed
BY CARLA GOMEZ
EB MAGALONA – Residents of Barangay Tomontong here, known for its famous blue crabs (alimasag), are singing the blues.
The lucrative earnings they once had are hurting with the decline in their catch attributed to over-harvesting and the rising price of fuel, Barangay Captain Rolly Bronda said yesterday.
Eighty percent of the 1,717 residents of Tomongtong rely on blue crabs as the major source of their livelihood, Bronda said.
Kagawad Felipe Deguira Jr. said that, in the past, his average catch was 10 kilos a day but it has dropped to just about 3 kilos. That leaves him with earnings of about P250 a day after gasoline and other expenses are deducted, he said.
But there are still some good days when his catch reaches 20 to 30 kilos, he said.
Kagawad Dalia Gaco, 48, who has been in the blue crab business in Tomongtong for 18 years, said their catch is bought by picking plants at P165 a kilo where crab meat is extracted and sold to buyers for export.
Government has helped us through the years by providing seminars to teach us to be discriminating in our catch to prevent the depletion of the blue crabs, she said.
Fishermen here have been taught about the need to avoid fishing practices that do not allow the return to sea of juvenile crabs that have not yet reached sexual maturity or gravid crabs that have not yet spawned, Arsenio Palma, EB Magalona fishery officer, said.
THEY’RE TASTIER
“Blue crabs that are abundant in Tomongtong are much tastier than other crabs because the habitat here is soft and muddy with a lot of algae,” he said.
To fully improve the habitat of the crabs and the burger shells and brown mussels they feed on, villagers have also stepped up mangrove reforestation, former barangay captain Andrito Malunes said.
The mangroves also help prevent further erosion in Tomongtong that could also gradually be eaten up by the sea if no proactive measures are taken.
EB Magalona Mayor David Lacson said that, to further save Tomongtong from being lost to the sea P2 million from the funds of the town, provincial government and Rep. Jose Carlos Lacson (Neg. Occ., 3rd District) have been allocated for the repair of the village dikes.
The name Barangay Tomongtong is synonymous with blue crabs but actually EB Magalona’s shoreline from barangays Latasan to Pasil have blue crabs, too, Lacson said.
CRAB SANCTUARY
Lacson said he is also proposing the establishment of a 19-kilometer crab sanctuary for gravid crabs or “Bukakahan” from barangays Latasan to Pasil that will be off limits to fishermen for five to 10 years. This will allow undisturbed spawning and ensure the propagation of blue crabs for the future, he said.
“We will explain the benefits of a crab sanctuary to marginal fishermen, provide alternative livelihoods and hold hearings on the matter,” Lacson said.
Meanwhile, he said the town government is enforcing two ordinances prohibiting and penalizing the catching of gravid crabs and juvenile crabs or crablets.
PICKING PLANTS
Today there are also six known blue crab processing plants in EB Magalona, Lacson said.
From the catchers, the crabs are brought to these plants where their meat is picked out and packed for shipment mostly to Cebu for canning and export, he said.
Two such picking plants in EB Magalona are the Hibionada Aqua Venture ran by Ronaldo Hibionada and Kyle Seafoods Ventures owned by Ronald Villanueva.
Hinionada said his plant provides about 150 EB Magalona residents jobs at peak production and has an output of 600 to 700 kilos of crabmeat a day, which he sells to exporters at P90 to P100 a kilo.
The canned crabmeat for Hibionada Aqua Venture is shipped out from Cebu to the US market, he said.
Villanueva said his plant has about 50 to 60 employees and produces about 200 kilos of crab meat a day.
The crab meat picking plants have provided added employment to many in EB Magalona, Lacson said.
But the employment and income for EB Magalona residents, from their blue crab industry could be lost if stakeholders don’t protect their blue crab resource, the mayor said.
At the provincial level a Provincial Blue Crab Fishery Ordinance is also in place regulating the catching, selling, buying and mere processing of gravid blue crabs and crablets in Negros Occidental.*CPG
