^^ ako ya migo, I wont compare Smallville to Goldenfields... mas superior ang Goldenfields IMO because for Decades, it ruled the Party, Dining and Gambling scene sa Bacolod... before they had Libis, the Fort, Eastwood, Smallville, etc etc, we are already enjoying the comforts of these so called MIX USE COMPLEXES... mini-cities within the cities...

^^ Sang una sa Goldenfields ka lang makakita sang amu sini... we even enjoyed MO2 for years before they branched out to Iloilo and Cebu and many regarded MO2 as the Ultimate Club scene na kay daw ka One Stop Shop nalang sang dating nya... Restaurant, Chill out bar, Club, Videoke, etc etc... see... before pa lang ya gina enjoy na sang mga taga Bacolod ang mga amo ni nga Life/Nightlife...

^^ Until now, naganami na lang guid nga naga nami ang Goldenfields... with the Addition of a Resort Hotel sa sulod, nag bongga pa guid... I just hope nga mapanami na guid sang mga Ong ang ila nga Legacy sa Bacolod which is the Goldenfields in the coming years and i hope they are just getting the right timing...

^^ That is why I just cant compare Goldenfields to Smallville... Goldenfields might be old na... but kung sa tawo pa bala, MAY ASIM PA SHA... :)

Massage was once an add-on service of barber shops but soon the concept of spas, an outfit specializing in various massage modalities mushroomed in Bacolod City, the latest count according to NDB reporting team, is now 23 legitimate and family oriented spas.

The number of spas can also be validated using the record of the Spa Alliance of Negros (SPAN); an organization spearheaded by then Councilor Jocelle Batapa-Sigue and whose president now is Mrs. Vicky Que.

Services of spas no longer include hair cuts and styling but rather alternative modes of therapy, facial cleansing and sauna baths thus the term "Beauty Health and Wellness" to describe the industry where they belong.

Likewise, being an alternative mode of therapy the Department of Tourism (DOT) categorized spas under its medical tourism program and that even major hospitals in Manila extended one whole unit for such therapy.

Azkals fit and ready for match vs Mongolia

MANILA, Philippines — Even though four starters have yet to join the team in practice, the Philippine Azkals are now in top form for their AFC Challenge Cup qualifying duel against Mongolia of Feb. 9, assistant coach Edzel Bracamonte said.

“They are fit and ready,” Bracamonte said yesterday, less than a week before the Azkals, who are still waiting for Neil Etheridge, Rob Gier, Ray Johnson and Jayson de Jong from abroad, plunge into their highly-anticipated match at the Panaad Stadium in Bacolod City.

The four are arriving on Feb. 6.

Bracamonte made the assessment two days after the Azkals showed some measure of confidence in their tune up match against a formidable team from Negros which resulted in a 4-4 draw.

The score could have been a lopsided one in favor of the Azkals had head coach Hans Michael Weiss stayed on with his mainstays in the second half.

The Azkals led 4-1 at the break with Phil Younghusband accounting for two goals and midfielder Ricardo Becite and Skipper Aly Borromeo hitting one apiece.

But Weiss pulled off his veterans to give the newbies the chance to showcase their stuff, thus allowing the Negros selection team, mentored by former PH coach Norman Fegidero to comeback.

“The score might have been 8-1 or more if the starters continued to play (in the second half),” co-team captain Chieffy Caligdong said.

Right now, Bracamonte said the only thing the team needs to improve on is “their communication on the pitch.”

“They should understand (each other) when to attack and defend," Bracamonted said.

The Azkals get the chance to intensify their build up even more when they face a South Korean team in another tune up match tentatively set at 4 p.m. today at the Panaad Stadium.

"It will be a better test for us than (against Negros team)," said Caligdong of the Korean team based in Central Philippine University from Iloilo City.

"Some of the members are former under 14 and 17 (Korean) national team members."

Meanwhile, PFF president Mariano "Nonong" Araneta said all tickets, which were printed courtesy of Smart Communication, will be available tomorrow.

MANILA, Philippines — Andie Unson tries to foil the highly anticipated Dottie Ardina-Chihiro Ikeda showdown as she joins the title hunt in the Southern Ladies golf tournament which begins today at the Bacolod Golf and Country Club in Murcia, Bacolod.

Her confidence boosted by her victory in the last week’s The Country Club Invitational where she emerged the low amateur, Unson, 16, hopes to re-display her top form and play a more mature game in a bid to keep her win run going early in the season.

But the recent winner of the Philippine International Junior Golf crown will be facing a pair of aces out to redeem themselves from their failed bid at TCC with Ardina seeking a second straight championship in the 54-hole tournament organized and conducted by the National Golf Association of the Philippines.

Ardina hit a birdie on final hole to nip Ikeda in a thrilling title duel last year in Iloilo with another down-to-the-wire finish again expected with Ikeda raring to get back at her tormentor and likewise add the crown to her Philippine Ladies Open diadem last month.

But focus will be on Unson, who hopes to compensate her drawback to Ardina and Ikeda off the tee with a solid iron game and steady putting over the tight, rolling fairways that require accurate iron shots.

“While premium is on driving on this course, I think Andie has a big chance because her ball striking is solid and she is playing with a lot of confidence and putts well,” said ICTSI golf team and national women’s team coach Bong Lopez.

The 48th staging of the annual event was launched yesterday through the traditional 18-hole Lam-Am tournament with Philippine Sports Commission chair Richie Garcia, Philippine Olympic Committee chair Monico Puentevella, NGAP sec-gen Edgar Arceo Jr., NGAP auditor and NGAP ladies committee head Alice Andrada and Murcia Mayor Andrew Montelibano, and Leandro Lopez Montelibano, treasurer of the host club, hitting the ceremonial drives.

Also on tap are the 36-hole team competition and the seniors division to be played under the Stableford scoring system (net of handicap).

Azkals fit and ready for match vs Mongolia

MANILA, Philippines — Even though four starters have yet to join the team in practice, the Philippine Azkals are now in top form for their AFC Challenge Cup qualifying duel against Mongolia of Feb. 9, assistant coach Edzel Bracamonte said.

“They are fit and ready,” Bracamonte said yesterday, less than a week before the Azkals, who are still waiting for Neil Etheridge, Rob Gier, Ray Johnson and Jayson de Jong from abroad, plunge into their highly-anticipated match at the Panaad Stadium in Bacolod City.

The four are arriving on Feb. 6.

Bracamonte made the assessment two days after the Azkals showed some measure of confidence in their tune up match against a formidable team from Negros which resulted in a 4-4 draw.

I hate these news. Gina mega-hype ang Azkals. Its like the builders and designers of TITANIC who said it was "unsinkable" :ohno:

Bacolod as film capital

With little drumbeating, Bacolod’s artists are now staging Bacollywood, a Visayan Film Festival that may well secure for the city the title of being the film capital of the Visayas. It is the third edition of this festival of short films that is already attracting international attention, what with 12 films from five countries Russia, China, Iran, Korea, France and China -- participating now.

Bacollywood 3 has 57 shorts which are screening in four Bacolod schools -- University of St. La Salle, Colegio San Agustin, University of Negros Occidental Recoletos, La Consolacion College. The shorts are mostly made by filmmakers based in the Visayas or those with Visayan roots. There are a few done by foreigners, but deal with Visayan tales, such as the 27-minuter “Shamans of Siquijor: The Healers, a documentary done by the US-based RC Brillantes.

The festival is a tapestry of Visayan stories and stories told through the prism of Visayans and done in various degrees of technical skill and artistry. There is Mana [Inheritance] done by Gabby Fernandez from Negros Occidental, which tackles an aswang’s decision to whom she will pass on her dark powers and curse; a take-off from local mythology about aswangs who cannot die unless someone in the family accepts the responsibility of being the witch’s successor.

Lianne Alejandrino, a student filmmaker from La Salle, captures in her three-minuter Kalendaryo, a silent short, the story of a young lady’s shocking discovery that she is pregnant. Poli Gonzales’ Kontrata, one of the few rated films in the festival, is about one person’s pact with the devil.

Joanna V. Arong, a successful documentary filmmaker from Cebu, has two entries: Yugong Yishan [The Old Fool], which tells the story of artists’ efforts to preserve culture in communist China and Sunday School, also a documentary, which tells the stories of AIDs in Africa.

Another Cebuano filmmaker, Remton Zuazola, is showing his “To Siomai Love”, a 26-minuter that had already been premiered in New York, and Kurtina nga Pula [The Red Curtain] and Ang Katapusan nga Bagting [The Last Toll].

The longest-running entry, Rindido, by Noriel Jarito of Samar, runs for 71 minutes. It stands out as a brave piece of filmmaking: Jarito wrote, directed, and acted in it and had also served as cameraman. How he did it bears watching as he tells the complicated story of an overseas workers who returns and discovers the infidelity of his wife.

Bacollywood is being mounted by Produksyon Tramontina headed by visual artist and filmmaker Manny Montelibano. It is one of the activities of Ani ng Sining, the Philippine International Arts Festival 2011 mounted by the National Commission for Culture and Arts.

No glittering gala nor red carpet awards night, not even a reception, is scheduled in Bacollywood – a significant sign that this festival is, truly, about films and what film-making is like in the new century. It is about the power of film as a medium of story-telling, now democratized with everyone’s access to affordable technology.

With computers, almost everyone with the ability to tell a story can be a filmmaker, a fact that Bacollywood 3 is celebrating.

C'mon, it's football! Not some Pinoy fiesta. It's a game, and an international event at that.

I don't expect nga malain ang pag-start sang game wherein the commentator will announce each and every football player's name just like what happened during the SEA Games. Ano na, basketball? :bash:

It'll be a long way to go before we truly appreciate what football is. I don't say nga expert man ko sa football ah pero it is really different on how basketball (which is our "national sport" na lang gid man siguro) is played.

Tani indi lang mag-die down dayon ang fanaticism ta because of the Azkals. If we want to start being competitive in world sport, we should start investing and training young local bloods as early as now.

While the four-goal draw against the Negros Selection `Asukal’ team Monday afternoon may not be indicative of the real strength of the national men’s football team, the Azkals, the friendly game against the Korean-reinforced team from the Central Philippine University (Iloilo) tomorrow is another battle to watch out for.

The team from Iloilo saw action recently in Dumaguete City during the National University Games, and although it failed to capture the championship, the team showed its potential.

“It will be a good match,” former Bacolod City congressman and Philippine Olympic Committee chairman Monico Puentevella said.

He stressed that the national team is not yet complete with the rest of the members of the Azkals, such as goal keeper Neil Etheridge, and Jason de Jong arriving on February 6.

We will see how strong the team is when they are complete. The Team B that failed to contain the Negros Selection in the second half of Monday’s friendly game was mostly composed of players scouted for the Southeast Asian Games in Indonesia later this year, Puentevella said.

Meanwhile, congressman Albee Benitez of the third district will treat football spectators on February 9 with a spectacular display of fireworks during the Philippine vs. Mongolia game.

THE superstructure components for the flyover at the Lacson Street-Circumferential Road in Barangay Bata were already at the Bacolod Real Estate Development Corp. (Bredco) port since November 2010.

The Department of Public Works and Highways will soon mobilize the equipment for the flyover project’s bored piling works, said Bacolod City Administrator Dr. Rogelio Balo.

Balo said that according to project engineer Rico Flores, they will start with the bored piling works as soon as utilities like Ceneco, Baciwa, PLDT, SMART and Globe telecommunications companies relocate their facilities, which obstruct the construction of the flyover.

Balo added that he has already reminded these utility companies regarding this matter.

“We have already conducted an actual inspection of the location together with your representatives who pointed to us the sites where the affected distribution lines and poles should be relocated,” Ceneco general manager Sulpicio Lagarde said.

Lagarde added that they have started mobilizing their crew since January 17 so that the contractor will be able to proceed with the implementation of the project.

“We will soon know the schedule of activities of the flyover project construction, as DPWH said that it will only take four to five months to finish the project,” he said.

Balo also said the second flyover project, which will be located at Magsaysay-Araneta might need to be relocated, considering that Bacolod City Mayor Evelio R. Leonardia wanted to put the second flyover at Burgos-Circumferential Road.

The city will ask the DPWH if they could conduct an engineering study to determine if it is feasible to put the second flyover at Burgos-Circumferential Road, he said. (CNC)

NEGROS Occidental Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr. will discuss some of his priority projects for the province during President Noynoy Aquino's visit in Bacolod City.

The President will personally witness the football game between the Philippine Team Azkals and a team from Mongolia on February 9 at the Panaad Park and Stadium in Barangay Mansilingan.

He said he will ask the President's support on food security, hospital facilities, irrigation and road repairs. However, Marañon added that he will still assess the mood of the President.

"If the President is in a good mood, I will take up these projects with him. If he becomes so concentrated on the game, then we shall not disturb his focus," Marañon said. (Teresa ellera-dulla)

BACOLOD City will celebrate Thursday the Bacolaodiat Festival, which will highlight the Chinese New Year.

The festival runs until February 6, 2011 with the theme “Hopping towards Prosperity.”

Bacolod City Mayor Evelio R. Leonardia, Vice Mayor Jude Thaddeus Sayson and members of Council along with the Tsinoys led by Leonito Lopue, festival chairman, will spearhead the opening rites of the Bacolaodiat Festival.

Teresita Ang See and Iloilo City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog both confirmed to grace the festival, upon the invitation of Leonardia and Lopue.

The opening of the Chopstick Alley, a food walk and night market with colorful booths of delicious Chinese food, arts and crafts with live band performances nightly will be at 4 p.m. It will be followed by a grand parade from the city’s public plaza to the Capitol lagoon.

The grand parade will showcase the colorful and illuminated floats, lanterns, lions and dragons. There are 34 Tsinoy organizations, which will participate to welcome the Year of the Rabbit.

Meanwhile, at the PEPSI stage on 4th Lacson Street, right in front of KFC, Yuan Thong Temple’s Sandy Solinap will be preparing three dishes for the Vegan cooking demonstration with Fiesta Gas and Merci Pasalubong Treats giving out prizes for their games at 5pm.

Then brace yourselves for the festival highlight -- the Lantern Street Dance Competition will -- that make everyone sing and dance along to the Bacolaodiat song.

The twelve participating groups are to begin their performance at the Chopsticks Alley stage on the North Capitol Road.

By 6 p.m., they will strut their stuff along 4th to 17th Lacson Street while the top three finalists will be announced by 10 p.m. right before the Symphony of Lights and Sparks.

Awarding of winners will be on Sunday, 6 p.m., at the SM Event Center dubbed as the Champions’ Night, where three winners of the Bacolaodiat Lantern Street Dance Competition will have their encore performances to give the festival-goers another glimpse of the Chinese New Year spirit.

Bacolod as film capital

With little drumbeating, Bacolod’s artists are now staging Bacollywood, a Visayan Film Festival that may well secure for the city the title of being the film capital of the Visayas. It is the third edition of this festival of short films that is already attracting international attention, what with 12 films from five countries Russia, China, Iran, Korea, France and China -- participating now.

Bacollywood 3 has 57 shorts which are screening in four Bacolod schools -- University of St. La Salle, Colegio San Agustin, University of Negros Occidental Recoletos, La Consolacion College. The shorts are mostly made by filmmakers based in the Visayas or those with Visayan roots. There are a few done by foreigners, but deal with Visayan tales, such as the 27-minuter “Shamans of Siquijor: The Healers, a documentary done by the US-based RC Brillantes.

The festival is a tapestry of Visayan stories and stories told through the prism of Visayans and done in various degrees of technical skill and artistry. There is Mana [Inheritance] done by Gabby Fernandez from Negros Occidental, which tackles an aswang’s decision to whom she will pass on her dark powers and curse; a take-off from local mythology about aswangs who cannot die unless someone in the family accepts the responsibility of being the witch’s successor.

Lianne Alejandrino, a student filmmaker from La Salle, captures in her three-minuter Kalendaryo, a silent short, the story of a young lady’s shocking discovery that she is pregnant. Poli Gonzales’ Kontrata, one of the few rated films in the festival, is about one person’s pact with the devil.

Joanna V. Arong, a successful documentary filmmaker from Cebu, has two entries: Yugong Yishan [The Old Fool], which tells the story of artists’ efforts to preserve culture in communist China and Sunday School, also a documentary, which tells the stories of AIDs in Africa.

Another Cebuano filmmaker, Remton Zuazola, is showing his “To Siomai Love”, a 26-minuter that had already been premiered in New York, and Kurtina nga Pula [The Red Curtain] and Ang Katapusan nga Bagting [The Last Toll].

The longest-running entry, Rindido, by Noriel Jarito of Samar, runs for 71 minutes. It stands out as a brave piece of filmmaking: Jarito wrote, directed, and acted in it and had also served as cameraman. How he did it bears watching as he tells the complicated story of an overseas workers who returns and discovers the infidelity of his wife.

Bacollywood is being mounted by Produksyon Tramontina headed by visual artist and filmmaker Manny Montelibano. It is one of the activities of Ani ng Sining, the Philippine International Arts Festival 2011 mounted by the National Commission for Culture and Arts.

No glittering gala nor red carpet awards night, not even a reception, is scheduled in Bacollywood – a significant sign that this festival is, truly, about films and what film-making is like in the new century. It is about the power of film as a medium of story-telling, now democratized with everyone’s access to affordable technology.

With computers, almost everyone with the ability to tell a story can be a filmmaker, a fact that Bacollywood 3 is celebrating.

Go, watch the movies in this ongoing festival of shorts. That is where cinema is heading in the new century and, thanks to our artists, Bacolod is, as usual, leading the way.*

THE City Government of Bacolod dismantled illegal temporary market stalls, which were impeding the flow of traffic along Amelia Street and Mercedez Avenue at the Libertad Public Market.

City and market administrator Dr. Rogelio Balo said the clearing operation is part of the city’s plans to restore order to the operations of the vendors in the three public markets in the city.

“We will organize our markets and its vendors. We have already prepared 156 tables for them so that they will not be displaced from their sole means of livelihood,” he said.

The vendors will have to follow strictly the policies of the City Government on its existence in the public markets’ premises. They will have to abide strictly with the five-meter clearance from the gutter where they can sell their goods.

Some vendors have even voluntarily demolished their stalls, added Balo.

Members of the Libertad Market Vendors Association also committed to help the city enforce the laws and they had shown their enthusiasm to police their own ranks, he added.

Moreover, Balo said the fish vendors at Bonifacio Street had agreed to follow the city’s policy allowing them to sell in the area only between 4 a.m. to 10 a.m. They have also committed to maintain the cleanliness and orderliness in the area.

P36M stall rental arrears

Balo said he sent demand letters to market stall occupants in the three public markets as well as occupants of Manokan Country in the Reclamation Area, reminding them to start settling their accounts with the city.

The delinquent stall occupants have been given 15 days to negotiate with the City Treasurer’s Office or the City Administrator’s Office on the mode of payment through which they will settle their liabilities.

Since 2004 and until now, the deficiencies in rentals have reached P36 million, disclosed Balo. Some occupants have made partial payments but nobody has fully settled the back accounts.

Balo said it is very hard for the city to implement improvements at the public markets, considering that the deficiencies run in millions and the city is heavily burdened in running these three public markets.

He said they are targeting at least 40 percent collection from the total arrearages so they can institute some improvements at the markets. The city can provide better facilities in the markets if the stall occupants pay their accounts, he said. (Carla N. Canet)

Filipino-Dutch standout Jason de Jong arrived in Bacolod yesterday, boosting the national squad’s midfield line a week before the Azkals face Mongolia in the first leg of their AFC Challenge Cup qualifying series.

As a defensive midfielder, De Jong, who plays for Veendam in the Dutch second division, played a key role in the Azkals’ run to the AFF Suzuki Cup semifinals last December.

His early arrival comes as a boost for the Azkals, who will miss Chris Greatwich for the Mongolia clash because of the midfielder’s work commitment in the United States.

Greatwich is actually suspended for the Mongolia match because of his red card in the second leg of the semifinals of the Suzuki Cup against Indonesia. He scored two goals in the group stage of the Suzuki Cup.

Simon Greatwich, Chris’ younger brother, and Ricardo Becite started at midfield for the Azkals in their 4-4 draw with Negros Occidental in a friendly last Monday.

The Azkals are slowly finding their feet under new German coach Hans Michael Weiss and a match against an Iloilo-based Korean side at the Panaad today should provide another stern test.

“The team needs as many matches as possible now to find its rhythm,” said Edwin Cabalida, Wiess’ lead assistant.

The Philippines will enter the Feb. 9 match as the 152nd ranked team in the world, 30 places above Mongolia.

The Azkals, who barged into the top 150 for the first time in history before losing ground in January, moved up one place in the latest ranking released by the International Football Federation.

The other members of the squad like Neil Etheridge, Rob Gier and Ray Jonnson are arriving on Saturday night and will join the squad in Bacolod on Feb. 6.

The 20-year-old Etheridge was hoping to arrive earlier for the clash, but he is expected to be listed in the Fulham squad for the English Premiere League match against Newcastle United.

Gier plays alongside skipper Aly Borromeo in central defense, while Jonnson, who plays top flight football in Iceland, is one of the most reliable left fullbacks the country has had in years.

While the Azkals underwent a two-week camp in Bacolod, Mongolia will only have two days to get used to the weather in the country.

The Mongolians, who reportedly trained in China, are scheduled to arrive Feb. 7. They will host the second leg of the qualifying series on March 15 in Ulanbator.

I think Ceres Liner to nga terminal ang most modern and biggest in the country?

THE City Government of Bacolod dismantled illegal temporary market stalls, which were impeding the flow of traffic along Amelia Street and Mercedez Avenue at the Libertad Public Market.

City and market administrator Dr. Rogelio Balo said the clearing operation is part of the city’s plans to restore order to the operations of the vendors in the three public markets in the city.

“We will organize our markets and its vendors. We have already prepared 156 tables for them so that they will not be displaced from their sole means of livelihood,” he said.

The vendors will have to follow strictly the policies of the City Government on its existence in the public markets’ premises. They will have to abide strictly with the five-meter clearance from the gutter where they can sell their goods.

Some vendors have even voluntarily demolished their stalls, added Balo.

Members of the Libertad Market Vendors Association also committed to help the city enforce the laws and they had shown their enthusiasm to police their own ranks, he added.

Moreover, Balo said the fish vendors at Bonifacio Street had agreed to follow the city’s policy allowing them to sell in the area only between 4 a.m. to 10 a.m. They have also committed to maintain the cleanliness and orderliness in the area.

P36M stall rental arrears

Balo said he sent demand letters to market stall occupants in the three public markets as well as occupants of Manokan Country in the Reclamation Area, reminding them to start settling their accounts with the city.

The delinquent stall occupants have been given 15 days to negotiate with the City Treasurer’s Office or the City Administrator’s Office on the mode of payment through which they will settle their liabilities.

Since 2004 and until now, the deficiencies in rentals have reached P36 million, disclosed Balo. Some occupants have made partial payments but nobody has fully settled the back accounts.

Balo said it is very hard for the city to implement improvements at the public markets, considering that the deficiencies run in millions and the city is heavily burdened in running these three public markets.

He said they are targeting at least 40 percent collection from the total arrearages so they can institute some improvements at the markets. The city can provide better facilities in the markets if the stall occupants pay their accounts, he said. (Carla N. Canet)

Flyover project delay due to power lines

BACOLOD City — What delays the construction of the flyover project on Lacson-Carlos Hilado Circumferential Road junction?

It is the relocation of the distribution lines of the Central Negros Electric Cooperative (CENECO), City Administrator Roger Balo said.

Engr. Rico Flores of the Department of Public Works and Highways said overhead utilities, or the power lines, should be relocated first before the bored piling works start, according to Balo.

Equipment for the bored piling, which was scheduled last month, were already mobilized, Balo quoted Flores as saying.

Flores added that superstructure components were already at the BREDCO port as early as November last year, Balo said.

CENECO General Manager, Engr. Sulpicio Lagarde Jr. assured to cooperate regarding the matter, he said.

Balo said Lagarde recently wrote Mayor Evelio Leonardia and acting district engineer Josefino Melgar, saying CENECO already surveyed the proposed flyover’s construction site.

On January 17, CENECO tasked its personnel to respond to the project engineer’s concerns, Balo quoted Lagarde.

According to Balo, CENECO, however, said there is no need to relocate the electrical wires but only adjust them vertically so they won’t touch the flyover.

Meanwhile, Balo said he will attend the meeting of the Regional Development Council in Iloilo to personally ask representatives of the DPWH-6 on when the actual start of construction is and how much time it will take them to complete the structure./PN

Testing the strength of the Philippine national football team, Iloilo-based South Korean booters playing for Central Philippine University, will arrive in Bacolod City today for the 4 p.m. friendly game against the Azkals at the Panaad Park and Sports Stadium.

It will be the Azkals’ second tune-up match for the February 9 AFC Challenge Cup qualifying game against Mongolia, after Monday’s encounter with the Negros Selection ‘Asukals’, who managed to even the score at four-all at the end of the game.

With the Younghusband brothers James and Phil, and team captain Aly Borromeo playing in the first half, the national squad dominated the game, 4-1.

The Negros’ boys, however, went for the attack and scored three goals in the second half for a four-goal draw.

Meanwhile, reports from the Philippine Football Federation said Team Mongolia will arrive in Bacolod City on February 7.

Organizing committee head Red Avelino was quoted saying that more than 20 delegations from Mongolia, including selected players and five coaching staff, will arrive for the game.

Avelino also said that preparation for the February 9 match is on track for the last remaining week.

Earlier, Azkals team manager Dan Palami said the team that will play against Mongolia is not yet complete as other players, among them, goalkeeper Neil Etheridge and midfielder Jason de Jong, will arrive February 6 to join their teammates.

While expressing confidence that the Azkals have a good chance of beating Mongolia, Palami said the players are expected to play their best irregardless of who their opponents are.

Team coordinating officer Patrick Ace Bright confirmed yesterday that Fil-Scottish siblings with roots from Cauayan, Negros Occidental, will be joining the Azkals, together with two other Filipino-Dutch booters in the upcoming AFC-sanctioned tournament.

James and Ryan Alonte Garrucho Hall, along with their Scottish father James Sr., are reportedly leaving England today and will arrive in the Manila tomorrow night to possibly join the Azkals this weekend.

The Hall siblings are the fourth and fifth children of James Sr. and Lori, a native of Cauayan town. The family, along with their eldest son Paul (28), Maria (25) and Maggie (23), who is an actress and model in London, left the province 18 years ago after Ryan's birth but often visit their hometown during holidays.

James, now 20, is playing as midfielder for Everton Football Club in the Premier League in England while Ryan, 18, is a right wing striker of Queen's Park Rangers FC after moving in last December from Preston North End. The contracts of the brothers with their respective teams expire this summer.

On the other hand, their father, James Sr., was born in Glasgow, Scotland. He is a retired professional football coach in Scotland.

Meanwhile, the two Fil-Dutch who are also expected to suit up for the national team are Jerry Ruben Lucena and Dennis Mengoy Cagara.

Thirty-year-old Lucena, son of a Filipino father and a Dane mother, plays as defender and midfielder of Aarhus Gymnastikforening (AGF) in Danish Superliga after moving from Esbjerg fB, where he scored 18 goals in 245 team matches.

On the other hand, Cagara was born in Glostrup, Netherlands to a Filipino father and a Danish mother. He plays as a left-sided defender at FC Nordsjælland.

Cagara started playing youth football at Brøndby IF where he was discovered and where he made his international debut playing for the Danish under-16 national team in November 2000.

He played full time at the 2002 UEFA European Under-17 Football Championship and went on to score five goals in 43 games for various Danish youth national teams until March 2006.

When he turned 18, he moved abroad to play for Hertha where he played the last eight games of Football-Bundesliga in the 2003/04 season.

good that most of us here already noticed the not so good side in our city . tani ma gaan na ni sang aton siudad solusyon... the city's public martkets (Burgos, Libertad, central market) are in poor/sorry state (structure-wise and health-wise ).. its time to demolish these eyesores and build a new and decent ones... the fact that these public markets generates income., they can look for financing institutions let's say Land Bank for funding .. :)

ORMOC CITY—Mayor Jun Medina led the inauguration of the new land transport integrated terminal in Isabel town, 47 kilometers west of this city.

The terminal sits on a 1.4-hectare land along the highway in Sto. Niño, less than a kilometer from the poblacion.

The terminal, which was constructed in 12 months, cost the city government P34 million, a 15-year loan obtained from the Development Bank of the Philippines at 4.8 percent to 7 percent (variable) interests. It accommodates all forms of public utility vehicles like buses, multicabs and tricycles.

The city government tapped contractor Rex E. Morales to build the terminal, which, among others, houses an administration building, passengers’ lounge, two comfort rooms and 42 commercial stalls.

Manuel M. Enmil Jr., the terminal supervisor, said the terminal has already been fully occupied. Some of the tenants, he said, are a travel and tours office, three Internet shops, four feedstock stores, six eateries, two meat shops, computer store, a lotto outlet and computer-repair shop.

Medina said the terminal will serve as a show window of the “humble but ambitious town.”

He said the presence of a modern terminal now makes travel more convenient.

The city folks also feel secured with the presence of law enforcers.

Isabela is an agro-industrial municipality which hosts the 425-hectare Leyte Industrial Development Estate (Lide), the first of its kind in the Philippines developed in 1978. Lide is home to Philippine Associated Smelting and Refining Corp. and Philippine Phosphate Fertilizer Co.

^^before @chef sa burgos pa ko naga pamakal karne, manok, isda galing amo man na ang problema ka higko gid kag kisah ka mga diskartidor sang mga manog baligya kapin mag bakal ka ginaling nga karne kisah gina laktan nila sa galigan daan nga karne pag abot mo sa balay pan os na. so I guess Savemore had seen these problems and we could say that there store is a modern version of a public market and whats good about it, it's not that expensive prices are reasonable and in 5 - 10 years I hope they'll expand further to the rest of Negros Occ.

The Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Negros Occidental yesterday passed a resolution requesting the Energy Development Corp. to explain the shutting down of its geothermal power plant in Bago City, Negros Occidental.

Board Member Emilio Yulo III, chairperson of the SP Committee on Environment and Natural Resources, said he has received unconfirmed reports that EDC is going to stop its project in Brgy. Mailum, Bago City, since the steam it has generated is not enough.

In November last year, the EDC had temporarily shut down its geothermal power plant in Bago City, pending additional technical studies to make it more viable for commercial use.

The Bago plant, which was commissioned in 2007, was targeted to produce about 40 megawatts of power but only had an about 6-megawatt output when it was shutdown, EDC said. It also was not supplying any power to Negros consumers.

Yulo said they want to hear an update from EDC on the present status of the geothermal power plant, and its plans for the future.

Environmentalists in Negros Occidental have opposed EDC’s entry into the Mt. Kanlaon Natural Park buffer zone to generate steam for its geothermal power plant in Bago City.

This prompted the Negros Occidental provincial government to set up safeguards to protect the park, especially its bio-diversity, and to create a monitoring committee.

Yulo said it was the national government which granted permits to the EDC to cut trees inside the park’s buffer zone, to pave the way for drilling of additional geothermal wells.

“As we all know, trees had been cut and bio-diversity may have probably been affected,” he said, admitting “that this forms part of the prize we have to pay, as they say, progress versus conservation.”

But now, Yulo said, “We have to take a second hard look at that particular issue.”

Seventy of these are ready-to-breed female sheep that cost P15,000 each and ten rams for breeding that cost P10,000 each, Decena said.

More than 70 female sheep are set to arrive in the last week of March, he said.

Decena said the sheep will be placed in the breeding centers of Brgy. Cansilayan, Murcia and in Sagay City for deworming, blood examination, and other quarantine services needed to make sure that the sheep will be fully adjusted to the place after days of transporting it.

Meanwhile, Decena said that one of the priorities of the province is to secure the local market by producing goods from the livestock industry that is geared towards food security, livelihood programs, and poverty alleviation.

The first beneficiaries of the program will be the Sheep and Goat Association of Negros Occidental, and other local government unit breeding centers, Decena also said.*LTG

A not-so-secret secret

It is supposed to be one of the best-kept secrets of Bacolod’s foodie society, a restaurant offering dishes with very familiar flavors at prices so attractive it has people coming back for more. For so long has the grapevine chattered about it, as though discovering it was a badge of accomplishment, a source of bragging rights.

I had initially heard it was somewhere in the university loop of Riverside, San Agustin and La Salle, and students were its avid fans. Then it moved to somewhere near Eroreco. Nobody could specifically point out its location, and fans conspiratorially said all you had to do was ask the sikad and tricycle drivers because they knew.

But I guess Pamilya Paura Grill is now no longer such a secret, considering the long line of cars parked in its front, and the SRO crowd that jostle for space in its small apparently temporary quarters. It was past 2 p.m. when I and good friend R got there, but the crowd had not abated. A table was immediately available when we came in, just in time to fill up all tables and chairs. The crowd was mostly students, obvious in their La Salle IDs and uniforms, but there were also office types and med reps, obvious in their uniforms and shirts emblazoned with the names of the drugs they push.

That was how it was the entire time we were there: just as a table was vacated, a group comes in to take it. It was not, as we were warned, a wait-to-be-seated event, but until we left some 30 minutes later, there was not an empty table for under five minutes.

The place must have been the front yard until this business came. Four large tents served as our roof; gravel stood for flooring, and the furniture was monobloc.

Nobody, of course, came for a well-appointed venue. Those updated with the food scene in Bacolod know what the crowd came for. Chicken Sate with rice that comes at an unbelievable price of P50; grilled spareribs in smoked hickory sauce with sate rice that goes for P60; siomai at P8 and, believe this or not, red fruit punch that costs P20 per serving.

Amo guid ya! exclaimed R the minute his teeth sank on the spareribs, affirming the taste as he expected it to be, delicious and juicy the sauce sweet, salty, smoky. My only complaint was the meat was sliced too thinly, but at its price, what did you expect? The chicken sate is inasal raised to another level, lashed with sugar and peanuts, the tastes perfectly blending. The sate rice was in familiar yellow, the cereal evenly coated. All told we had a tasty, satisfying meal for two at under P200 and we left smiling. Another crowd was waiting to take our table, and more cars were coming. It was almost 3 p.m.

There are other offerings in the menu, at the same price levels. That day, however, the Mongolian bowl was unavailable because, our waiter proudly offered, the cook was out catering. The backribs was out of stock and we had just seen the last of the siopaos for the day being served.

Foodies have been talking about this place for I think two years already. It hasn’t advertised in the mainstream and it has gone on only on the strength of the power of word of mouth.

Bacolod, after all, is not such a big metropolis. It is still a charming little town, urban and metropolitan only on the surface. Here, spunky small places like PPG can thrive, their existence and virtues passed on from mouth to hungry mouth.*

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Azkals blasted an all-Korean line up from the Central University of the Philippines (CPU) International School during a tune-up game at the Panaad Stadium in Bacolod City.

Football fans braved the rains on Thursday afternoon just to witness the Azkals’ 4-1 drubbing of the Korean squad.

Unlike the Azkal’s scrimmage with the Negros Occidental “Asukals” where they were held to a 4-4 draw, the Nationals dominated the Korean line-up mostly made up Korean high school students.

Although Azkals coach Hans Michael Weiss was pleased with his team’s performance, he said they still have a lot of work to do.

The Azkals have yet to compete its final line-up as some of their Filipino-foreign teammates are still due to arrive in Bacolod to join the practices.

The Philippine team is set to play against Mongolia in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Challenge Cup qualifier on February 9.

Meanwhile, fans mobbed the Azkals after Thursday’s tune-up game.

To gather strong support for the Azkals who will be battling the Mongolians in the AFC Challenge Cup qualifying match on Feb. 9, the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) is enjoining the fans to wear white shirts.

PFF president Mariano “Nonong” Araneta said white will be the theme since the Azkals, beefed up by Fil-foreigners, will be donning white uniforms in the first of the home-and-away duel set at the 15,500-seater Panaad Stadium in Bacolod City.

Araneta, also the Iloilo Football Association head, said the unity in colors will play a great factor in the match just like when
Brazilian fans wear yellow or Japanese fans wear blue in World Cup matches.

“Seeing a sea of fans in white will certainly fire up our players,” said Araneta, a former national player from University of the Philippines Iloilo.

Following the Azkals’ amazing semifinal finish in the AFF Suzuki Cup last Dec., the popularity of the sport and the team zoomed to unprecedented heights, making next week’s match a sure-fire blockbuster.

“It (the match) could be our biggest crowd in the history of Philippine football,” said Araneta, adding that the tickets, 10,000 of which are free of charge, will be available for distribution today.

Meanwhile, Philippine Sports Commission chairman Richie Garcia said preparations are on track for the match, saying locker rooms and shower stalls have already been repaired, and the field is ready and currently being used for training.

At presstime, around 1,200 lights are being transferred from the Paglaum Stadium to Panaad Stadium to make the venue fit for international standards.

People in Bacolod are also in festive mood for the upcoming match, with students swarming the Azkals even inside the hotels after practice, Azkals asst. coach Edzel Bracamonte said.

BACOLOD City — Another mining firm recently wrote the Provincial Board, informing of its desire to explore mineral deposits in the southern part of the province.

Philmet Exploration Corp. eyes an at least three-year exploration on the mountainous boundaries of Binalbagan town and Himamaylan City, as well as portions of La Libertad town in Negros Oriental, covering a total of 2,639 hectares.

In their letter, Philmet President and General Manager Veronica Iniguez Lee said the area to be covered was a moderate to rugged mountainous terrain, of which a vast portion has been logged-over.

Isolated patches of timber trees have been observed in the area, while the vegetative cover consisted mostly of “second-growth” trees, she said.

Philmet is the sixth mining firm that “knocked on the door” of the province despite the Provincial Board’s opposition against mining exploration in the province.

Provincial Board member Emilio Yulo III, chair of the Committee on Environment and Natural Resources, yesterday said the Board stands firm on opposing large-scale mining in the province.

Last month, the Board passed a resolution opposing existing and future applications for mining exploration permits, lease contracts and agreements in Negros Occidental for the next 25 years.

It resolved to adopt a standing policy to deny any request and not to endorse any existing or future mining projects.

Two other mining firms — the Philex Mining Corp. and the Santa Barbara Development Corp. — sought Department of Environment and Natural Resources permits for two years of mining exploration.

They intend to cover 3,501 hectares in Cauayan town and Sipalay City, hoping to discover copper and gold ore.

Others which were pending permission include the Selenga Mines, BF Mining Corp. and the Essensa Mining Corp.

Meanwhile, the closed G-Holdings Corp., formerly Maricalum Mining Corp., is reportedly negotiating with the provincial government, Sipalay City government and the Cauayan municipal government to settle its real property tax dues for it to operate again.

G-Holdings, which is into copper mining, has exploration rights on the boundaries of Sipalay City and Cauayan.

However, it was blamed for the destruction of vegetation and farm lands in the areas due to its poorly maintained tailings pond and open-pit mining./PN

BACOLOD CITY, Negros Occ. Feb. 3 (PIA)--With less than a week to go before the much awaited match between Mongolia and the country’s adored Azkals on February 9, the football field in Panaad Sports Complex here is undergoing facelifts to line up to the grand event as an appropriate venue for the first leg of the teams’ qualifying series in the Asian Football Confederation Challenge Cup.

Panaad Administrator Ian de Ramos said the 18,000-capacity stadium has been daily undergoing some touches and is now set in time for the forthcoming historic football day in the province.

“More lights will be set up here to provide proper illumination to the venue, the pitch has just had a blasting to even and and firm up the field, portions of the venue were also repainted and the VIP lounge already fixed. It’s all set for the big event,” he told PIA in an interview.

The stadium, he said, has a seating capacity of 8,000. Half of it will be sold out at P300 per ticket while the other half will be for the VIPs with portion of it to serve as a buffer.

The open bleachers can accommodate 10,000 spectators and are for free.

MAYOR BING BLAMES MONICO
MAYOR Bing of Bacolod City has reason to blame former Cong. Monico Puentevella for the non-participation of the city in the forthcoming football game at the Panaad Stadium on February 9.
The football game will be between the Philippines and Mongolia.
According to the mayor, until now his office has not been given any responsibility over the security and other activities of the game.
“If something untoward happens, who will be blamed because the game will be held in the city?” the mayor was quoted as saying.
It should be recalled that Mayor Bing and Cong. Monico are not on speaking terms. They hate each other due to politics.

iya na ni Grendel ya miga. whatever came up from her sponsors or affiliations maybe influenced her decision. Gladys Duenas (Bb Pilipinas Int'l 1995) represented Pagadian but proudly said she is from Siquijor all throughout the pageant,

-Hmmm choice na ni Grendel. I dunno where they have originated gid but the Alvarado's are originally from Sagay. But I would have liked it better if she represented Bacolod. kay ang gwa ta na karon basi masal-an ta ga angkon sang indi aton. hehehehehe.....jsut like when Alma Concepcion represented Bacolod City in 1994, damu gid nagsaka kilay. hehehehehe

BACOLOD City Councilor Caesar Distrito urged the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital (CLMMRH), through a resolution, to expand its nursing volunteer program to accommodate more professional nurses.

Every year, nursing schools produce thousands of nurses, Distrito said.

Last year, approximately 88,000 nursing graduates took the licensure exam. The number represents the largest group ever to take the exam in the country’s nursing history.

At present, many registered nurses are jobless and don’t know where to go, noted Distrito. Some would rather work as call center agents.

“My resolution intends to urge our public hospitals, particularly CLMMRH, to expand their nursing volunteer program so that they can accommodate more of our registered nurses,” he explained.

Some private hospitals have limited slots in their nursing volunteer programs.

Other hospitals collect from the volunteers “program fees,” which the registered nurses cannot afford.

Presently, there is an estimated 150,000 registered nurses who are unemployed in the Philippines, Distrito added. (Carla N. Canet)

There is a significant increase in the collection from business taxes after the "one stop shop" strategy in the tax collection and processing of business permits was transferred to the New Government Center (NGC).

Undertaken by the Permits and Licensing Division of the Bacolod City Treasurer’s Office, the increase in tax and business collection was recorded to P96,369,866 million in January this year, against the P53,925,895 million in January 2010.

This significant increase represents 78.7% revenue generated from business taxes from small and big business entities.

In a press release of the City Hall PIO, as interviewed by Joanzen Dedoroy, City Administrator Dr. Roger Balo, views it as a sustained reputation of Bacolod City as the Most Business Friendly City of 2007 which was manifested by the rapid construction of different motels, hotels, gasoline stations and other businesses. Balo is positive that by February 15 this year, as last day of the payment of business taxes, the percentage will still increase.

The new implementation of the one stop shop is effective because the offices concerned or involved in the processing of documents of businessmen are located in one area, which is the New Government Center.

The taxpayers processing their permits in the government center are served well and able to finish their in a short period of time.

Proof of efficiency of the Bacolod City One Stop Shop, there were 11,097 individuals who applied for their business permits from January until June of 2010. While for January of 2011 only, there were 12,475 individuals who showed interest in applying for business permits.

The Bacolod One Stop Shop, has been a successful practice in Bacolod City, was conceptualized during Leonardia’s first mayoralty term in 1995 to 1998 and has won the Anvil Award for the city.* (EBC)

UNO-Recoletos welcomes the arrival of US university student Kathryn D’Anjou who arrives for a university, community and family immersion from January to May 2011.

The 21-year old BA in Global Studies student with minor in youth ministry is graduating on December 2011 at Azusa Pacific University in Southern California, USA.

D Anjou described her four-month visit as part of her university’s academic requirement called Global Learning Term (GLT) which entails going abroad and writing a lengthy research paper on social issues, family and culture based on observation, interviews and academic research.

Because it is all about cultural immersion and learning about another country’s way of life, values, religion, and many more, she said, "I will be living with four families with different lifestyles and expect to learn much from each other."

After graduation, she also revealed that she plans to work with NGOs or missions "helping people how to fish than just giving them fish opportunities."

Since her arrival on January 21 she said she had been enjoying talking with people, especially with the UNO-R college students, comparing and contrasting the differences between the Philippines and the US. She had also gone to San Carlos, Murcia and La Carlota and had some sharing with and about the sugar workers. In UNO-R, she took part in Green Heart presentations, explaining about climate change and telling stories to pupils while learning some Ilonggo words from them.

Her activity with Greenheart had encouraged the grade school pupils to segregate and collect used paper and plastic bottles in exchange for some school supplies.

The Philippine visit, which is the first time for D’Anjou, was facilitated by Greenheart Hermitage, through University Property Administrator Bro. Jaazeal Jakosalem, OAR, and World Vision, through Faye Estrada.*(MSF)

To gather strong support for the Azkals who will be battling the Mongolians in the AFC Challenge Cup qualifying match on Feb. 9, the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) is enjoining the fans to wear white shirts.

PFF president Mariano “Nonong” Araneta said white will be the theme since the Azkals, beefed up by Fil-foreigners, will be donning white uniforms in the first of the home-and-away duel set at the 15,500-seater Panaad Stadium in Bacolod City.

Araneta, also the Iloilo Football Association head, said the unity in colors will play a great factor in the match just like when
Brazilian fans wear yellow or Japanese fans wear blue in World Cup matches.

“Seeing a sea of fans in white will certainly fire up our players,” said Araneta, a former national player from University of the Philippines Iloilo.

Following the Azkals’ amazing semifinal finish in the AFF Suzuki Cup last Dec., the popularity of the sport and the team zoomed to unprecedented heights, making next week’s match a sure-fire blockbuster.

“It (the match) could be our biggest crowd in the history of Philippine football,” said Araneta, adding that the tickets, 10,000 of which are free of charge, will be available for distribution today.

Meanwhile, Philippine Sports Commission chairman Richie Garcia said preparations are on track for the match, saying locker rooms and shower stalls have already been repaired, and the field is ready and currently being used for training.

At presstime, around 1,200 lights are being transferred from the Paglaum Stadium to Panaad Stadium to make the venue fit for international standards.

People in Bacolod are also in festive mood for the upcoming match, with students swarming the Azkals even inside the hotels after practice, Azkals asst. coach Edzel Bracamonte said.

Bacolod Mayor Evelio Leonardia yesterday said he foresees that the BacoLaodiat will grow as big as the MassKara Festival.

“When we started the BacoLaodiat in 2006 it was much simpler that it is today. And what we saw today was a validation that indeed, BacoLaodiat has gone a long, long way,” he said.

It is now like a fiesta, Leonardia said, as he joined other public officials and Chinese leaders during the 6th BacoLaodiat Festival parade.

Colorful lanterns and Chinese zodiac animals paraded from the old City Hall to Lacson Street in Bacolod City yesterday to kickoff the Chinese New Year.

Twelve participating groups epitomized the Chinese tradition with dragon dances and firecrackers along the way.

They wore different designs of Chinese traditional costumes with some carrying lanterns with designs varying from a round-shaped objects to a dome-like material decorated with tassels and sequence in gold and red.

BacoLaodiat Festival chairman Leonito Lopue said the main purpose of BacoLaodiat is to showcase the Chinese tradition and culture, and at the same time unite the Pinoys and Tsinoys.

He said Leonardia is the father of the BacoLaodiat.

Leonardia said that when he proposed the BacoLaodiat in 2005, he was motivated by how the Tsinoys in Bacolod had made an impact in the community.

“I saw that we had not yet tapped that vast resource to its full potentials so I thought the idea of celebrating the Chinese New Year would be a chance for us to see how far we can go,” he said.

“And because of the leadership of our Bacolod Tsinoys, this is what we have today,” he added.

Leonardia also acknowledged former BacoLaodiat chairmen Luis Chan, William Ong and Fred Barcelona, as well as special guests like Teresita Ang Sy, Carol Ong from Shanghai, and Yau Yuan Poon from Hong Kong.

Bacolod Rep. Anthony Golez said the Chinese New Year is a celebration of a new beginning for the billions of Chinese around the world.

“Here in Bacolod City and our country, we join our brothers and sisters as we strengthen our familial and cultural ties with their great nation and race. We welcome this new year with much calmness and prosperity as we contribute towards uniting our people and building a stronger nation,” he said.

Also present during the activities were Negros Occidental Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr., Bacolod Vice Mayor Jude Thaddeus Sayson, Councilors Homer Bais, Al Victor Espino, Mona Dia Jardin, Sonya Verdeflor, Caesar Distrito, Em Legaspi-Ang, Catalino Alisbo, and Carl Lopez, and acting Bacolod Police Director Senior Supt. Ricardo De la Paz.

Meanwhile, a resolution greeting the Filipino-Chinese community of Bacolod City a prosperous and fruitful new year, in their celebration of the Chinese New Year, was approved by the Bacolod Sangguniang Panlungsod Wednesday.

at mall in Bacolod

The Bacolod-Negros Occidental Federation for Information and Communications Technology will again hold its annual competitions and exhibitions.

Now on its fifth year, the Bacolod-Negros Occidental Information Technology Educational Fair is dubbed “ICT Olympics 2011,” a press release from organizers said.

Chairperson Jocelle Batapa-Sigue of the BNEFIT said the event that will be on March 1 and 2, at the Event Centre of SM City Bacolod aims to encourage the participation of both public and private schools from elementary, secondary to tertiary levels.

It also seeks to raise the level of consciousness and knowledge of the public regarding information and communication technology, ICT-related enterprises and industries, and its opportunities; provide a venue for all schools in Bacolod City and Negros Occidental to showcase, update and improve their ICT courses; strengthen the network and linkage among these schools in order to ensure adequate human resource for ICT enterprises in Bacolod and Negros Occidental; and to undertake activities that will stir the interest of the general public towards ICT, the press release said.

Hospital receives equipment

The Negros Occidental provincial government, through the Economic Enterprise Development Department – Hospital Division, recently obtained hospital and medical equipment donated by the St. Scholastica’s Bacolod Alumnae Foundation Inc. to be utilized at the Teresita L. Jalandoni Provincial Hospital in Silay City, a Capitol press release said.

Donated equipment were anesthesia machines and monitors, ventilators, electric hospital and transporter beds, examination tables, head and foot boards, mattresses, dental chairs for dentists and patients as well as medical and school books.

These equipment, according to EEDD Hospital Division head Dr. Rhoel Mogul has a total value of P6 million, the press release said.

Vice president Jean Trebol of SSBAFI with Christine Vargas, the foundation’s Board Member, and secretary Jarie Yulo signed the Deed of Donation during the turnover at the TLJPH, with EEDD head Japhet Masculino signing the acceptance in behalf of Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr., the press release added.*

Business tax collections in Bacolod significantly increased
BACOLOD CITY, Feb.4 (PIA) - The –Bacolod Permits and Licensing “One Stop Shop” showed a significant increase in the collection of business taxes.

Last year's collection was P 53,925,895 million while this January 2011 a total of P 96,369,866 million was collected. A significant increase of 78.7% revenue from business taxes from small and big business entities were generated.

City Administrator Dr. Roger Balo, said that the significant increase of the business collection sustains the reputation of Bacolod City as the Most Business friendly City of 2007 which was manifested by the rapid construction of different motels, hotels, gasoline stations and other businesses.

Balo is also positive that by February 15 of this year, the last day of the payment of business taxes, the percentage will still increase.

The new implementation of the one stop shop is effective because the offices concerned are located in one area, which is in the New Government Center Bacolod. “The tax payers in the government center processing their permits are served well and are able to finish their processing in well served time,” Balo added.

BACOLOD City Councilor Catalino Alisbo expressed his support to the proposal of Negros Occidental third district Representative Alfredo Benitez to establish a satellite office of the Professional Regulations Commission (PRC) in the province.

Alisbo lauded Benitez for bringing the PRC personnel to Bacolod City recently to serve the needs of professionals and future professionals in the province.

Alisbo recently filed a resolution expressing support to plans of Benitez to establish a PRC satellite office in the province.

He said professionals and those applying for license in Bacolod and Negros Occidental are having a hard time transacting business with the PRC due to the substantial distance of its regional office. The main office of the PRC in Western Visayas is located in Iloilo City, which is one hour boat ride from Bacolod City.

These professionals should be spared the inconvenience and the financial burden of travelling to Iloilo just for their application or renewal of their professional licenses, the councilor said.

He added that it is only logical that PRC should bring its services closer to the professionals who need them, particularly those in the Bacolod and Negros Occidental. (Carla N. Canet)

BACOLOD City Representative Anthony Golez vowed Friday to assist the families who will be displaced by the road project being undertaken by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) in Barangay Sum-ag.

Golez visited the site at Purok Nami-Nami on Friday to discuss the plans of DPWH and the measures the fate of the 44 families residing at the project site.

The road project, which is being funded by the National Government, requires the removal of 14 houses located along the road section to be widened. Thirty others have to have to be partially demolished.

Residents led by their leader Teofila Ortiz requested Golez to provide them with permanent relocation site.

Golez, for his part, heed their call and considered asking Bacolod Mayor Evelio R. Leonardia to provide a relocation site for the affected residents.

The lawmaker said also thought of requesting Vice Jejomar Binay, who heads the Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council, to help the affected residents avail of the government’s housing program.

Golez asked Director Minda Brigoli of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) to provide the affected families with livelihood assistance through its Self-Employment Assistance-Kaunlaran program.

Brigoli said to Golez and the affected residents that her office can assist them by providing them with P10,000 start-up capital, which is payable in phases.

Golez was seriously concerned with the welfare of the affected families, considering that DPWH needs to continue the excavation works.

The affected families have to be relocated at the soonest possible time because the DPWH also have deadline to beat in the implementation of the project, Golez said.

The discussion continued until such time that Golez was able to convince the informal settlers to share homes with the families whose residences will not be affected.

Golez assured those who will share their homes with their affected neighbors that they will receive one sack of rice as a form of incentive.

He also committed to provide P1,000 for each of the 30 families whose houses will be partially demolished.

The affected families, on the other hand, showed willingness to cooperate with the government in its effort to effect progress in the area.

Golez expressed gratitude to those who showed willingness to support the implementation of government projects. (Carla N. Cañet)

Bacolod has been sweet to the Azkals—now deep in training for the first leg of their Asian Football Confederation Challenge Cup qualifying series against Mongolia on Feb. 9.

Since arriving in Sugarlandia, the Azkals must be thinking they’d gone through some kind of time portal and that Piolo Pascual might leap out of the next muscovado sugar booth and welcome them like fellow matinee idols. :lol:

But the electricity from fans shrieking till they’re hoarse has somewhat short-circuited a few of the players.

The flipside to celebrity, says team manager Dan Palami, has resulted in some of the Azkals getting bothered by the glare of the spotlight. “The enthusiasm of the local fans is good for football, but then it creates a problem, training-wise,” notes Palami.

For a semblance of private practices and to preserve the sod at Panaad Stadium for the actual game with the Mongolians, the Philippine national team rotates practices in three venues around Bacolod. These are the pitches of the University of Negros Occidental Recoletos, the Yanson private field and Panaad.

The moveable practices and the La Niña rains falling on the city have not abated what Palami calls the “fiesta atmosphere” surrounding the Azkals. This has prompted the team to hoist an appeal to allow the players to scrimmage with minimum distraction.

The team is faced with serious business for the Cup qualifying match—the first home game for the Azkals in a long time. They are hard at work on some options designed by new German coach Hans Michael Weiss to create a smooth shift from defense to offense.

The offense has been calibrated previously to deliver the ball to striker Phil Younghusband and let him create scoring chances. The new scheme calls for a team effort to move the football, confuse the defense and open up additional paths to the goal.

The team is responding well to fresh offensive plans while it slowly rounds out to form, conditioning and stamina-wise. “Everybody will be fit to play for the entire 90 minutes come game time,” says Palami.

The Azkals reached the semifinals of the prestigious Asean Football Federation Suzuki Cup for the first time last year, sparking a movement to unshackle the country from the grip of basketball and make football the national team sport because it matches our physical build and temperament.

The Azkals are aiming to go as far as they could in the Challenge Cup for emerging football nations and a gateway to the Asian Cup—the continent’s version of the soccer World Cup, the most watched sporting event in the world.

Capitol stands firm vs taxing
income-generating venture

BACOLOD City — Still, the provincial government is against the taxation on its income-generating ventures.

This was despite the dialogue between Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. and representatives of the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) recently, with the latter explaining why the provincial government should pay taxes on its select ventures.

The governor’s chief of staff Atty. Jose Ma. Valencia said the BIR Revenue District 12 led by Director Araceli Francisco failed to convince Marañon as regards its basis in demanding to register all proprietary activities of the provincial government for corporate income taxation.

According to the BIR, this is in line with its Tax Information Campaign.

BIR said agencies or instrumentalities of the government are not automatically exempted from income tax.

The agency particularly cited those that are engaged in a business, industry or any activity performed by other ordinary taxable corporations.

Being such, the BIR said, makes them subject to income tax on the same rate with similar corporate entities.

But Valencia, also the Provincial Legal Office head, said Marañon was not moved by the BIR’s reasoning.
The governor insistently disagreed when the BIR cited the Supreme Court ruling on the Bacani vs. Nacoco (GR No. L-9657 dated November 1956) case, he said.

Valencia said they are still waiting for the resolution of the Governor’s League of the Philippines stressing their opposition on all forms of taxation planned by the BIR against their income-generating ventures./PN

SRA seeks test on premixed sugar

BACOLOD City — The head of the Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA) recently issued a Sugar Order seeking a laboratory test on premixed sugar.

This is amid the alleged proliferation of premixed sugar in the country that is, according to some sugar industry players, a form of technical smuggling.

The order aims to solve the problem, “which was blamed by sugar producers as the cause of the slow sugar trade in the past five weeks,” said SRA head Gina Bautista-Martin.

She said it will also “improve the system of issuing premix clearance.”

“A laboratory analysis to differentiate sugar and premix (ones) will be conducted on all shipments (requesting for clearance),” she stressed.

At the same time, Martin said, “the SRA conducts regular study of sugar supply levels in the country.

With delayed milling due to weather and low production, the SRA will come up with a recommendation on the importation at the right time.”

The Confederation of Sugar Producers (CONFED), the largest group of sugar planters in the country, raised the issue on premixed sugar last week.

In a recent dialogue with Martin, CONFED Negros-Panay Chair Raymond Montinola said the entry of large volumes of premixed sugar caused the slowdown of sugar trading.

Consequently, sugar prices dropped from P2,400/lkg to P2,200/lkg, he added.

Also recently, the National Federation of Sugarcane Planters (NFSP) announced that Coca-Cola Philippines and Kraft Food Philippines allegedly brought in more than one million 50-kilo bags of premixed sugar last year.

“There is an accepted concept by the World Customs Organization that any sweetened substance containing more than 65 percent sugar is ‘sugar,’ and should be taxed under Chapter 17 of the Asian Harmonized Tariff Nomenclature book,” said Montinola.

“The premix that came in contained 99.9 percent sugar; it’s plain and simple sugar. The last figure we saw… (was) 25,000 metric tons. Essentially, that’s bringing in more imported sugar to the country,” he explained.

“We would like to know if the importation by Kraft and Coco-Cola is covered by an approved allocation from the SRA Board. Who authorized such allocation? How did they come up with such volume? Were the proper procedures followed in granting the two companies such a large allocation?” said Enrique Rojas, president of the NFSP.

Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. recently appealed to SRA to strictly impose rules related to the said “technical smuggling.”
