Marapara Rotary launches
English training program

The Rotary Club of Bacolod Marapara has launched an English Enhancement Training program to improve the chances of would-be call center agents being hired, a press release from the group said.

The program is the brainchild of Rotarian Paul Felton, a Bacolod-based call center manager, who said there is great demand for call center agents in Bacolod. It’s a great career, but often a lack of English skills means would-be agents don't get hired.

In many cases, it only takes a few training sessions for their English to improve dramatically. That’s the purpose of this program, Felton was quoted as saying in the press release.

The Rotary scheme offers 25 four-hour training sessions conducted by veteran call center agent Krtistine Tamayo. Classes are held at the Antonio Chan Memorial Technical Center in Bata Subdivision in Bacolod City.

Those interested in joining the program may call Marapara Rotary secretary May Jabonata on 09173445158.

Candidates should be over 18, high school graduates, computer literate and have average proficiency in English. There is a nominal registration fee of P100, the press release added.*

Marañon urges students
to take agri, biz courses

Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. is encouraging students to take agriculture related courses like veterinary and forestry, and courses like pharmacy and accountancy as he approved the P21,760,000 million budget for the 2011 Negros Occidental Scholarship Program, NOSP secretariat Ana Thesesa Murillo said yesterday.

The budget is bigger this year compared to last year with P19.9 million for the 337 currently enrolled scholars, Murillo said.

The increase allows them to add scholarship slots particularly in the Pagkaon Scholarship from 20 to 30 and the District Educational Scholarship from 42 to 60 allowing each district to accept 10 scholars, she said.

Murillo said the 20 slots will be given to the Provincial Educational Assistance for Capitol Employees, 10 slots of which will be allotted for bachelor’s degrees and another 10 slots for post graduate studies.

Other scholarships available are 10 slots for vocational and technical courses, six slots for Degree Completion Scholarships, and five slots for Indigenous Peoples Scholarships, but Murillo said there might be changes in the IPS.

Meanwhile, the Negros Occidental Provincial Medical and Nursing Scholarship has been reduced to three slots. Murillo explained that there are too many nurses in the province that are underemployed, which means they do not practice their profession. Some of them work as call center agents, she added.

Winners of Lin-ay Sang Negros are the recipients of Best of Negros Scholarship, Murillo also said.

Also included in the budget is the scholarship administrative support that will be used for other expenses, she said.*LTG

good morning bacolod! i just would like to share.... this coming school year 2011-2012, USLS will start to rubberized the track oval... at least other than panaad, there will be another track oval in bacolod that is rubberized...

MANILA---The Philippines football team is gunning for no less than a comfortable victory against Mongolia in the first leg of their AFC Challenge Cup duel in Bacolod City, and the Azkals aren’t burdened by the high expectations heaped on them by the public.

“Expectations are always high and all this buildup and attention toward us just makes us hungrier for more victories ahead,” Azkals skipper Aly Borromeo told the Inquirer.

“We’ve been waiting so long for football to touch the heart of the Filipinos. This is just a step in proving that we can put Philippines in the football map of the world.”

Borromeo was responding to comments made by Philippine Olympic Committee president Jose Cojuangco Jr., who said that Filipinos should not expect too much from the Azkals, despite their semifinal finish in the AFF Suzuki Cup last December.

Cojuangco’s statements on the radio show “Usapang POC” that the Azkals’ match with the Mongolians was getting too much publicity went viral yesterday and drew passionate comments from fans online.

“I think we need all the hype we can get at this moment,” Borromeo said.

The Azkals continued their buildup Thursday when they beat a Central Philippine University side bannered by Koreans, 4-1, in a match watched by 3,000 fans at the Panaad Stadium.

Simon Greatwich opened the scoring with a 35-yard strike in the 17th minute, before Ian Araneta doubled the lead before halftime.

The Koreans pulled a goal two minutes after the restart, but Borromeo scored on a header from a corner kick in the 49th minute, before new recruit William Guerridon wrapped up the scoring in the 65th minute.

Filipino-Dutch midfielder Jason de Jong was inserted into the starting eleven a day after arriving from the Netherlands.

The Azkals missed star striker Phil Younghusband, who was sidelined by a hamstring problem on both legs. Younghusband said he should be ready for the showdown with Mongolia on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, two Filipino-Danish standouts—Dennis Cagara and Jerry Lucena—arrived in Manila yesterday to process their passports, a requirement needed for them to play for the Azkals in future matches.

BACOLOD CITY, Philippines – Philippine national football team coach Michael Weiss said yesterday he won’t waste time dealing with players demanding money and acting like superstars as the Azkals continue their twice-a-day workouts in preparation for the Feb. 9 opener of a home-and-away Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Challenge Cup qualifier against Mongolia at the Panaad Stadium here.

“They can stay where they are,” said Weiss, referring to overseas Filipino or Fil-foreign players more interested in a contract than representing the country. “We’re inviting players who want to play for their country. It doesn’t matter if they’re half-Filipinos or full-Filipinos for as long as they’re Filipinos. It’s not right to distinguish a half-Filipino from a full-Filipino. I’m married to a Japanese woman. I wouldn’t like to refer to our children as half-Japanese or half-German.”

Weiss said the important thing is players on the national team respect each other for what they bring to the field. “The idea is to get everyone to play together as a unit,” said Weiss who was assigned here on a grant from the German Football Association. “We’ve got players coming from overseas with different backgrounds. They’re welcome to join. We’re opening the doors to players who can contribute. We’re a heterogeneous group but we’re learning to play as a team. We’re discovering new players like William Espinosa who’s from the local leagues. We want the best players who will be proud to represent the country.”

Weiss, 45, said he’s not inclined to recruit a naturalized player like a Christian Gonzales, a Uruguayan who plays for Indonesia. “I don’t think it will work to bring a foreigner into the national team,” he said. “Chemistry is critical and I’m not sure if there will be good chemistry if a foreigner comes to play for the national team.”

The other night, Weiss coached the Azkals to a 4-1 win over a Korean squad reinforced by two locals who are students of Central Philippine University in Iloilo City. West Negros’ Eduard Sacapano, 30, was the Azkals goalkeeper in place of Neil Etheridge who is expected to arrive from England tomorrow. The Azkals’ goals were scored by Simon Greatwich, Aly Borromeo, Ian Araneta and Espinosa. Korean Gyung Sik Choi slipped in a goal off Sacapano with a grounder to the deep right corner coming from the left flank as the linesmen ignored an off-side trap by Borromeo.

Hundreds of fans stormed the pitch in a mob scene to snap photos after the Azkals won and shrieking teen-aged girls waved adoringly at their idols, including Weiss, as the team sped away in a bus to the Luxur Hotel, the former Bacolod Convention Center. Azkalmania has swept the city like an epidemic.

An additional 300 lux capacity was installed for the match to bring up the level to 800 lux which was the lighting for the Asean Football Federation (AFF) Suzuki Cup matches in Vietnam last year. The lights were brought in from the nearby Paglaum Stadium, said Philippine Olympic Committee chairman Monico Puentevella who watched the match from the stands.

“We’re 60 to 70 percent ready,” said Weiss. “We still need some fine-tuning. We’re getting used to playing together, getting comfortable with each other and the stiff pitch. Success won’t come overnight. It takes a plan, a strategy, patience, money, support, hard work and many tears before we can move ahead. I’ve been in the country only three weeks and I like it. I’m here for two years. My goal is to take the team to top form for the 2012 Suzuki Cup.

We’ll go as far as we can in the Challenge Cup. I think we should be able to beat Mongolia and perhaps, finish in the best eight. I’m not sure about the World Cup qualifiers because that may be too soon. I’ll work with two teams, the other is the under-23 selection for the Southeast Asian Games in Indonesia this year. I hope we’ll be competitive for the Southeast Asian Games and I’m told if we get even a bronze, it’ll be a big accomplishment.”

Weiss said it will take “brutal hard work” to even come close to the level of a Japan or Korea.

“Right now, I think we could be at the top of South Asia,” he said. “We’ll test our team against Middle East countries like Kuwait, Jordan and the United Arab Emirates and see how we do against them in the coming months. Then, we’ll find out where we stand against other Asian countries. What the team needs is a clear tactical plan and an organizational set-up. It won’t do running in counters which is suicide football. The players are technically very good with a good understanding of the game. We have speed and I want to develop fast passes, big movements and switching positions to surprise opponents. I want an attacking team with a lot of speed. Our players are just getting used to practicing twice a day when before, it was twice a week which won’t get you very far. If the Philippines ever hopes to be like a Japan or Korea or even Bahrain, it will take a lot of time and effort. It will take putting up big football centers, maybe in six or seven years. But we’ve got to make the big first step now.”

Weiss said the signs are encouraging for the future. With the Azkals’ recent showing in the Suzuki Cup, they’ve become instant national heroes. “If President Aquino comes out to watch the team and show his support, it will inspire more Filipinos to follow and support us,” he said. “There’s a lot of hard work to do. I think what we need is not talk but action.”

Weiss coached the Rwanda under-17 team for four years and now the squad has matured to finish second in the African Cup. He was previously an assistant coach with the China under-20 selection and the Kyoto Purple Sanga in the Japanese league. Weiss, a sports science and management graduate of the University of Mainz, has served internships with Real Madrid, Arsenal, Kaiserslautern and River Plate.

The city's internet service provider, GLOBE is still having glitches after transferring to the new government center. Gina ayos pa daw nila...sige lang i-follow up ta ini nila nga problem

Mayo man bala tani kung Bacolod is benefiting as much as he makes it seems to be. Subong nga ara siya sa PSC, please lang, indi lang mag-focus sa boxing kag basketball. Physical traits (read: height) hinder our success in basketball, i-accept ta na lang na. Boxing is under-funded as well as the other sports programs in the country.

SECTION 1. Legislative Districts and Sangguniang Panlungsod Seats. –
The City of Bacolod shall have two (2) legislative districts to commence in the
next national elections after the effectivity of this Act. Henceforth, barangays
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24,
25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 33, 41, Alangilan, Banago, Bata, Estefania, Granda,
Mandalagan, Monte Vista, Villamonte and Vista Alegre shall comprise the

Singcang, Sum-ag, Taculing and Tangub shall comprise the Second Legislative

There shall be eight (8) regular sangguniang panlungsod members in

{SEC. 2. Incumbent Representative and Sangguniang Panlungsod
Members. – The incumbent Representative and sangguniang panlungsod
members of the City of Bacolod shall continue to hold office until the new

populated by 499,497 individuals. This is expected to reach 537,942 in 2010.
In keeping with the Constitutionally-enshrined mandate for optimal
representation, the city should be apportioned into two (2) separate
legislative districts and allowed 2 representatives in the House of
Representatives.
In view of the foregoing, we conclude that Bacolod City meets the
necessary criteria to reapportion its lone legislative district into 2 separate
districts, allowing for two representatives in the House of Representatives.

Nos. 276 and 1209 and all other laws, rules and regulation inconsistent with
this Act are hereby repealed, amended or modified accordingly.
SECTION 6. Effectivity. - This Act shall take effect fifteen (15) days
after publication in the Official Gazette or in two (2) national newspapers of
general circulation,

Naaah, it would not take that long. Bacolod is already qualified with a population of 520,000++ and legislators are on the hots for speeding it up. I'm sure the division would occur before the year ends...fingers crossed :banana:

And Negros island has many urban centers in comparison with other Visayan Islands. Its nice that the whole island is sharing with each other.Thanks for this

The sky must have been cloudy in some areas when this image was taken. I would expect Kabankalan to shine brighter since it has the 3rd biggest urban core in the island. It's also surprising that Victorias, Sagay and Bayawan aren't visible. Baka brownout during that time :).

BACOLOD CITY, Philippines – All roads lead to the Panaad Stadium where the national football team plays Mongolia in the opener of an Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Challenge Cup qualifying home-and-away series here Wednesday night as sugarland’s City of Smiles braces for a mob scene in what is expected to be a mad scramble for tickets in the swirl of Azkalmania.

Philippine Football Federation (PFF) president Mariano Araneta, Jr. said yesterday 10,000 general admission tickets will be given free to the public, 2,000 tickets set aside for VIPs and 4,000 tickets for sale at P300 apiece.

Araneta will fly in from Manila tomorrow. He said 5,000 of the 10,000 general admission tickets are reserved for the PFF’s 33 regular members, five associate members and one probationary member. Of the 5,000 allocated for the PFF, the Iloilo association has a reservation for 1,500. How the balance of 5,000 will be distributed to Bacolod fans is still to be determined. A proposal to distribute the 5,000 tickets at the Panaad Stadium about six hours before the match may be reconsidered to avoid a stampede.

The PFF has designated Red Avelino to head the local organizing committee and he is expected to coordinate with the provincial government and the Negros Occidental Football Association (NOFA) in determining an orderly system of ticket distribution.

Araneta said the PFF office in Pasig began distributing tickets to buyers from Manila yesterday. The PFF office will remain open today to settle ticket orders from on-line and walk-in customers. Starting tomorrow, the tickets will only be available here.

City Mayor Bing Leonardia said the local police force will be on standby for any eventuality. So far, Leonardia mentioned the only request he has received from the PFF through Avelino was to make available a fire truck. Last Thursday, a Korean team made up of students from the Central Philippine University of Iloilo paid a courtesy call on Leonardia before playing the Azkals at the Panaad Stadium.

“I was informed that the PFF has asked the provincial police to provide security during the match,” said Leonardia. “The city government is ready to support. We will do traffic enforcement and garbage disposal and whatever else is necessary.”

Since the Azkals arrived here last Jan. 26, the city has been in a frenzy. Shrieking teen-aged girls follow the players around like groupies with rock stars. Some 3,500 fans watched the Azkals beat the Korean team, reinforced by two Ilonggos, 4-1, in a friendly and hundreds stormed the pitch to celebrate the victory at the final horn. The Azkals practice twice a day, morning and afternoon, drawing big crowds at the Panaad Stadium, the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos field and a small, private pitch owned by the Yanson family in Talisay.

Philippine Airlines station manager Segismundo (Jun) Sison said all flights are booked from Manila to Bacolod this coming week. “There are about 20 flights from different airlines landing in the Bacolod-Silay airport every day,” said Sison. “If the direct flight from Manila to Bacolod is unavailable anymore, visitors can go via Iloilo or Cebu. There’s a ferry from Iloilo to Bacolod. Philippine Airlines will be happy to find alternative flights on our routes for those who want to watch the match.”

Probably not although I'm not sure.

I've just been to Panaad a while ago when I watched the Azkals practice game. I'm sorting some of the pics I took. :cheers:

The stadium looks good although may dutay pa nga work nga kinahanglan para ready na gid for Wednesday. Damo man to kagina tawo from the other provinces who are already here for the match on Wednesday. I met someone from Davao; didn't get to ask if he's an SSCer though.

Azkalmania triggers business boom

BACOLOD CITY, Philippines – The rising popularity of the Philippine national football team has converted this Negros Occidental capital into the epicenter of Azkalmania where fans from all over the country are congregating to witness the game against Mongolia in the opener of the Asian Football Cup (AFC) Challenge Cup qualifying home-and-away series at the Panaad Stadium here Wednesday night.

City Mayor Bing Leonardia said hotels are slowly filling up but assured the public that rooms are still available. However, popular hotels like L’Fisher and Luxur, where the Azkals stay, are fully booked.

Enterprising businessmen are producing self-styled Azkals T-shirts. Philippine Football Federation (PFF) president Mariano Araneta, Jr. said Mizuno is producing “official” T-shirts carrying the PFF logo to be sold at the venue for P500 apiece. Nicky-Boy Puentevella has come up with his own unique design and his shirts are selling for P400 each. Dieter Soukup, a German who lives here, has rolled out a series of Azkals T-shirt designs through his company Inkmaxx.

“I’m a football fan and Inkmaxx supported the Philippine team in the 2005 Southeast Asian Games in Bacolod,” said Soukup. “Our Akzals T-shirts sell from P119 to P199 only and are available at our stores and hopefully, at the stadium on Feb. 9. We accept on-line orders. Shirts to be sent by forwarder carry a freight charge of P100 for one or two shirts, P200 for three to five, P250 for six to 10 and P20 per shirt for 10 or more. My designs are on facebook.”

As for his countryman Michael Weiss being the new Azkals coach, Soukup said, “I’m happy about the German coach and I’m confident a new football era will begin in the Philippines now.”

Araneta said he hopes a sea of white will envelope the stands during the match against Mongolia.

“We’ve asked all the fans to wear white because our team will be wearing white,” said Araneta. “We’re encouraging everyone to bring Philippine flags to wave. We want to show the country is solidly behind our team.”

The PFF is in charge of allocating 16,000 tickets for the match – 10,000 given free to the public, 2,000 for VIPs and 4,000 for sale at P300 apiece. The host organization is the Negros Occidental Football Association headed by Charlie Cojuangco.

The opening ceremony for Wednesday’s game will include a fireworks display provided by Rep. Alby Benitez.

Philippine Olympic Committee chairman Monico Puentevella, who played a key role in convincing FIFA to recognize Araneta as PFF president after the mid-stream removal of Jose Mari Martinez on a vote of no-confidence late last year, said sufficient lights have been installed at the Panaad Stadium to satisfy the AFC requirements.

Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chairman Richie Garcia requested Department of Education secretary Br. Armin Luistro for approval to transfer 300 lux from the Paglaum Stadium to Panaad to bring up the capacity to 800 lux. Another 300 lux at Paglaum may be transferred if necessary. The PSC actually owns the lights but Paglaum is under Department of Education supervision. The Panaad Stadium, on the other hand, is owned by the provincial government headed by Gov. Alfredo Maranon.

A slew of VIPs is expected to witness the match. Leonardia said he has not been informed if President Aquino isarriving. Some VIPs who are coming include Sen. Bong Revilla, Sen. Migz Zubiri and Philippine Olympic Committee president Jose Cojuangco, Jr.

Puentevella said he can’t wait for the Panaad Stadium to be cloaked in white by 16,000 fans.

“When we played Indonesia in the Suzuki Cup in Jakarta, I think we were only seven Filipinos wearing blue because that was our team color,” said Puentevella. “But there were 80,000 Indonesians wearing red which was their team color. It’s almost like a culture in football where you see the home fans wear the local team’s colors in the stands. It’s a show of solid support.”

Robinsons Land to expand on all fronts

MANILA, Philippines - Robinsons Land Corp. (RLC) is accelerating expansion across all its business segments with capital expenditures seen to rise by almost 40 percent this year to P9 billion in a move aimed at further boosting its presence and securing profitable long-term growth.

RLC president and chief operating officer Frederick Go said the company is building four malls and two office buildings this year to take advantage of a growing economy and steady inflows from Filipinos living and working abroad. Among the new malls scheduled for construction this year are in Pangasinan, Palawan, New Manila and Cebu, he said.

“We are very optimistic about the real estate industry. There is general confidence in the economy and the growing business process outsourcing sector and OFW remittances are supporting consumer spending,” Go said.

Go said the programmed capital budget, which is significantly higher than the P6.5 billion spent last year, excludes special land acquisitions that the company intends to pursue to capitalize on strong demand for residential properties. The company is looking to acquire two parcels of land in Metro Manila to be developed for office space.

For hotels, RLC plans to put up a total of 30 Gohotels in and outside Metro Manila over a five year period. Programmed for opening this year are in Bacolod and Dumaguete. The next sites will rise Palawan, Iloilo, Cebu, and Tacloban for 2012 and Pangasinan, Ilocos Norte, Zamboanga, Batanes, and Gensan in 2013.

RLC is looking to expand overseas to further augment revenues. A planned stock rights offering of 1.3 billion shares, with a current market value of about P18.07 billion, is being planned within the first half this year to fund land acquisition, project construction and development, possible expansion in China and other general corporate purposes.

The rights offering shares will come from a planned capital hike from P3 billion to P8.2 billion of which 25 percent or P1.3 billion (at par value of one peso per share) will be subscribed and at least P325 million will be paid by way of the stock rights offering.RLC earlier said the increase in capital would give it “flexibility to access the equity capital markets in the future since the subscribed capital has almost reached the authorized capital stock.”

The company has offered to develop the 103-hectare Food Terminal Inc. (FTI) property in Taguig into a modern, world-class mixed-use development.

RLC has four integrated large-scale mixed use developments in Ortigas, Manila, Mandaluyong and in the future Magnolia Complex in Quezon City.

RLC is the property arm of taipan John Gokongwei’s listed flagship firm JG Summit Holdings Inc., one of the country’s largest conglomerates with diverse interests in branded consumer food, agro-industrial and commodity food products, textile, telecommunications, petrochemicals, air transportation and financial services.

Ayala remains bullish, expects to top 2010 sales

MANILA, Philippines - Property giant Ayala Land Inc. remains on a bullish mode with plans to top 2010 sales and product launches on simmering demand for real estate properties.

In a recent briefing, ALI residential group head Bobby Dy said the company is ramping up construction of economic housing units under the Amaia brand, which is touted to become the biggest residential brand of the Ayala conglomerate in five years.

Dy explained that the biggest opportunity now lies in the broad middle-income market served by Avida and Amaia. ALI has earmarked P1.08 billion for Amaia Land over a three-year period.

The first Amaia project, located on a 20-hectare property in Calamba, is expected to rake in P1.6 billion from the sale of 1,828 units. House-and-lot units will sell for P600,000 to P1.25 million each, with lot sizes of up to 75 square meters. The target market is families earning up to P50,000 a month.

Amaia is planning six more projects in Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Bulacan and Pampanga to put up a total of 12,000 units, competing head-on with mass housing builder Vista Land, DMCI Homes and Phinma Property Holdings Corp.

There is an estimated shortage of 3.8 million housing units in the Philippines, primarily in the socialized and low-cost categories.

Dy, however, pointed out that growth is also seen in the firm’s high-end products under Ayala Land Premier.

Dy said the company is going full blast with its expansion outside Metro Manila, tapping underserved markets Iloilo, Cebu, Bataan, Bacolod and Davao.

ALI is aiming to almost triple its BPO gross leasable area from 257,000 sqm to 720,000 sqm by 2014. It launched more than 110,000 sqm of GLA last year (due for completion in 2011-2013.

With the annual office demand at 300,000 sqm based on Jones Lang LaSalle Leechiu’s estimates, the 363,000 sqm planned new supply can be easily taken up by the market.

Ayala Land is issuing P10 billion worth of five to 15-year corporate notes. Proceeds will be used for land banking.

Sta Lucia unit sets P11-billion capex

MANILA, Philippines - Sta Lucia Land, the listed property unit of the Sta.Lucia Group, has set a capital expenditure program of P11 billion over a five-year period to bankroll new residential, office and commercial projects.

In a statement, Sta. Lucia said it expects 2011 to be a banner year with sales seen to rise over 3,600 units.

Slated for construction this year are the Sta. Lucia Towers (located beside the Sta. Lucia mall along Marcos Highway), business process outsourcing offices and tourism-related projects. The first two of the five-building Sta. Lucia Towers of the five towers will begin construction in the first quarter this year.

To fund its expansion, Sta. Lucia Land is considering undertaking a follow-on offering in the latter part of the year. The Group has yet to tap the international debt and equity capital markets as it has stayed conservative in terms of its funding strategies.

Tapping the equities market will not only allow Sta. Lucia it to aggressively mobilize the groups’ extensive landbank currently with Sta. Lucia Realty Group but also expand its tourism and leisure related assets while venturing into acquisitions.

The Sta. Lucia Group has had a strong history of building quality projects having developed over 9,000 hectares of prime properties with over 200 projects nationwide.

“Strong market conditions, not only in the Philippine property market but for the entire Southeast Asian region as well, has prompted the company to leverage its brand name and expertise to continue to take part in the development of the country’s highly unserved real estate sector” said David dela Cruz, senior vice-president for Corporate Finance and Investor Relations at Sta. Lucia.

The group by far has served the middle income segment by providing residential units while tailor-fitting amortization schemes to make the units affordable without comprising quality. It also ventured into retail with its Sta Lucia Grand East Mall located in Cainta, Rizal which provides a steady stream of cash flows to the company.

Mongolian XI arrives for ACC qualifying match

LARGELY a mystery even to its foe, the Mongolian squad arrives today in Manila for its opening match against the Philippines in the Asian Challenge Cup qualifying match on Wednesday at the Panaa-ad Sports Complex in Bacolod City.

Ranked 182nd in the latest FIFA world rankings, the Mongolians are scheduled to arrive at around 10 a.m. today at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 1 before taking a connecting flight to the Negros Oriental provincial capital two days before they play the Filipinos.

The nationals are 30 notches above the visitors in the FIFA ratings at No. 152.

The visitors are largely an unknown quantity, although national coach Hans Michael Weiss said in an earlier briefing that they had a training camp in Guangzhou to adjust to the Philippine weather.

According to a Wikipedia post, the Mongolian coach is Erdenebat Sandagjorg, while the team captain is Donorovyn Lkhümbengarav.

Lkhumbengarav and teammate Ganbaataryn Tögsbayar are the sides top goal makers, according to the same post.

On the other hand, three national team mainstays, led by goalie Neil Etheridge, were set to arrive last Saturday to boost the squad for the Azkals’ first hometown international match since last year’s sensational outing in the AFF Suzuki Cup.

Arriving with Etheridge were Fil-British Rob Geir and Fil-Dutch Ray Jonsson, who man the backline with team skipper Aly Borromeo and Anton del Rosario.

In a radio interview last week, team manager Dan Palami said that he was bullish about the Filpinos’ chances in the first of two ACC qualifying matches against the Mongolians, who get to host the next match in their capital of Ulan Bator next month.

“We’re preparing quite well. Come game time on Feb. 9, you will see a team that’s truly prepared and ready to take on the international competition,” Palami said.

BACOLOD City Mayor Evelio R. Leonardia said the holding of the 6th Bacolaodiat Festival, which highlighted the city’s Chinese New Year celebration, last February 3-6 was successful.

“This is definitely a resounding success,” Leonardia said Sunday during the Champions Night at SM City Bacolod where the winners of the lantern dance contest rendered their winning performances while the festival committee also awarded the winners of the giant rabbit lantern competition.

“The North Capitol Road and the Tourism Strip along Lacson Street were filled with people who truly enjoyed the Bacolaodiat festival. All this is because of the cooperation of the Chinese and Filipino communities,” the mayor added.

For his part, festival director Leonito Lopue said that this year’s Bacolaodiat festival is the best in its six-year history as “we have kept on improving every year.”

He said that this year’s official song was composed by Carole Ong, a graduate of St. John’s Institute, one of the Chinese schools in the city. She presently works in Shanghai but she came home to Bacolod for the festival.

Leonardia recalled that when he first proposed the holding of the Chinese New Year celebration six years ago, Bacolod’s Chinese community responded positively.

“They have made an impact in our community and they are here to stay,” he said of the city’s Filipino-Chinese community as he pointed out that the peoples of the world are mixtures of the cultures of the world.

MassKara in the making

“With our kind of celebration, we can therefore claim that Bacolod is among the cities with the biggest celebrations in the country. This is another MassKara festival in the making,” Leonardia said referring to the city’s yearly festival held every October.

Bacolaodiat is now on its sixth year while the famous MassKara festival has been running for 31 years.

“We are the only city in the Philippines which had two major festivals. Long live Bacolaodiat and mabuhay Bacolod City!” Leonardia declared.

The mayor said this year’s Bacolaodiat festival has become “bigger, more colorful and much better.” It has shown its full potential this year, showing that it has ripened through the years and has matured as a festival, he added.

Bacolaodiat has become a tourist attraction and, in the near future, when the Chinese go out of their country to celebrate the Chinese New Year, Bacolod might be considered as among their destinations, Leonardia said.

He said that he is glad that the people of Bacolod have accepted this festival.

Lopue, on the other hand, expressed his gratitude to the pedicab drivers for their contributions in showing their artistic skills in crafting the giant Chinese zodiac sign animals.

The costumes of the Chinese ethnic groups depicted by the lantern dancers had a very close semblance of authenticity as the materials were directly bought from China, Lopue said.

He also expressed his gratitude to the companies, which set up their stalls in the Chopsticks Alley, the bands and all the sponsors who contributed to the over-all success of this year’s festival.

Meanwhile, the group WSWG (Walk Straight with God) received P60,000 for being the champion in this year’s lantern dance competition.

The first runner up went to Dance World Company, while the second runner up went to Double J Full Force. Both winners received P40,000 and P20,000 cash prizes, respectively.

Both special awards for Best in Costume and Best in Lantern went to Dance World Company. Each special award carried a cash prize of P10,000.

Twelve groups vied for the championship in the lantern dance contest. The groups which did their best but did not make it to the top three were given P8,000 cash each from Bacolod’s Chinese community.

For the giant rabbit lantern contest, Bago City’s entry was adjudged the champion. First runner-up honors went to Silay City.(Carla N. Canet)

THE Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital (CLMMRH) in Bacolod City is expected to benefit from the Universal Health Care (UHC) agenda of the Aquino administration.

UHC calls for improved access to quality hospitals and health care facilities through the upgrading and expansion of their capacities to provide services to help attain the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs); attend to traumatic injuries and other types of emergencies; and manage non-communicable diseases and their complications.

Bacolod City Lone District Rep. Anthony Rolando Golez Jr. and Negros Occidental 6th District Rep. Mercedes Alvarez already co-authored House Bill 03355, which pushes for the conversion of the CLMMRH into a medical center.

The bill, which was already referred to the House committee on health, also seeks to increase the hospital’s bed capacity to 500; upgrade its service facilities as well as equipments; and increase both its medical and administrative personnel.

In this year’s P107.4-million total allocation of Bacolod City for health services, some P3.6M has been set aside as initial donation to the CLMMRH for the medical needs exclusively of Bacoleños.

Aside from access to quality health care facilities, UHC’s other strategic thrust is financial risk protection through the expansion in National Health Insurance Program (NHIP) or PhilHealth enrollment and benefit delivery. “The poor are to be protected from the financial impacts of health care use by improving the benefit delivery ratio of the NHIP.”

Public health programs will also focused on reducing maternal and child mortality, morbidity and mortality from TB and malaria; and the prevalence of HIV/AIDS, in addition to being prepared for emerging disease trends, and prevention and control of non-communicable diseases.

The UHC implementation plan as well as operational guidelines is set to be mapped out before the end of the first quarter this year.

The Department of Health (DOH) in Western Visayas earlier reported an improved PhilHealth coverage for 2011. Last year, the region was able to get P41 million for enrollment of indigent families to PhilHealth.

This year, the DOH said another P38M is earmarked for additional coverage. “This signals the government's concern for public health of indigent families.”

Azkals 90% complete; Mongolia arrives today

WITH two more sleeps left before the final showdown kicks off at Panaad Stadium between Philippine Football Team-Azkals and team Mongolia for the 2012 AFC-Challenge Cup qualifying match, Azkals’ team manager Dan Palami yesterday said that the squad is 90 percent complete and ready for action.

Palami also disclosed before a thousand fans watching at the stadium that, with the team almost complete, they were able to some problems as to the plays setup in yesterday’s session.

“With Rob Geir coming up, I hope he will able to adjust with the weather following his arrival from United Kingdom,” Palami added.

“I think with the team almost complete, maybe after one or two more session we will get the proper chemistry,” skipper Aly Borromeo said.

Meanwhile, Azkals’ head coach Hans Micheal Weiss stressed that they want to make sure that they maintain their high speed throughout the course of Wednesday’s game against Mongolia.

On the other hand, team Mongolia is arriving at 3:15pm today and expected to test the Panaad grounds tonight as part of their familiarization of the playing venue.

New players coming

With the Azkals nearly making a big name in the world of football, the team’s fame caught the interest of lots of Fil-foreign players seeing action abroad to join the team.

Yesterday, five Fil-foreign booters joined the Azkals’ practice at Panaad. They were the Negros-born James and Ryan Hall, Jerry Lucena, Dennis Cagara and another 19-year-old Fil-Belgian Van Bosche.

According to Weiss, this young Fil-Belgian is on a holiday vacation and simply approached them yesterday and had a tryout with the team.

Meanwhile, Palami said that the coaching staff is assessing the Hall brother as to what role they will play in the team.

“I think it’s good that they are here. Their teammates as well as the coaching staff will be able to determine what role they are playing,” Palami added.

Weiss, on the other hand, stated that the Hall brothers are also candidates for the country’s under 23 team bound to see action in the South East Asian Games this November.

The head coach, however, said that unfortunately, these players will not be able to see action on the February 9 match but will possibly play in the March 15 game in Mongolia.

The nationals are 30 notches above the visitors in the FIFA ratings at No. 152.

The visitors are largely an unknown quantity, although national coach Hans Michael Weiss said in an earlier briefing that they had a training camp in Guangzhou to adjust to the Philippine weather.

According to a Wikipedia post, the Mongolian coach is Erdenebat Sandagjorg, while the team captain is Donorovyn Lkhümbengarav.

Lkhumbengarav and teammate Ganbaataryn Tögsbayar are the sides top goal makers, according to the same post.

On the other hand, three national team mainstays, led by goalie Neil Etheridge, were set to arrive last Saturday to boost the squad for the Azkals’ first hometown international match since last year’s sensational outing in the AFF Suzuki Cup.

NEGROS Occidental - The Hotel and Restaurant Association of Negros Occidental (HRANO) will hold the Food Industry Exhibition & Symposium for Trade Advancement (FIESTA) Bacolod 2011 with the theme, “HRANO Going Green” on March 3 to 5, 2011 at Robinsons Place Bacolod.

Activities during the FIESTA will include culinary contests for students and open categories, lectures from industry-experts, a series of cooking and product demos, and a trade exhibit to be participated in by major industry and allied partners showcasing their latest products, equipment and kitchen tools.

To promote Negrense cuisine using locally available ingredients, HRANO came up with a competition called “Na'nam, a Feast of Negrense Flavors.” It will focus on indigenous items such as ubad, takway, kadyos and tugabang.

Pre-elimination briefing will be on February 15, and elimination round on February 18. The top five entries will then compete for the final cooking contest on March 5.
Winners will receive a cash prize and a plaque.

Negrenses Saturday for the first time saw the multi-awarded documentary about an American war hero who kept a harem in Negros Occidental and eventually was convicted of rape.

“Kano: An American and His Harem” directed by Monster Jimenez capped the five-day Bacollywood 3: Visayan Film Festival at Robisons Movie World Cinema 6 in Bacolod City.

The film has won the 2010 IDFA (International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam) Award for First Appearance and the best documentary award in the 12th Cinemanila International Film Festival.

“Kano” traces the story of Victor Pearson, a US Marine and Vietnam war hero, from his hometown in Oregon in the United States to Barangay Andulauan, Ilog, in Negros Occidental, where he had sex with numerous women, some of whom were minors, which eventually led to his arrest in August 2001.

Negrense film director Peque Gallaga said “Kano” is a “devastating indictment of the system, and an eloquent argument for the passage of the reproductive health bill.”

“It’s an amazing film. In the beginning, it’s so easy to set up your parameters of what is right and wrong, and then you begin to see the humanity and you realize that there is something distorted about their worldview,” he said.

“It points all the way back to extreme poverty, in which case shame on the government, and shame on the Church that wants us to increase and multiply, when so many poor parents can’t even take care of their children,” he said.

He cited how parents in the documentary, because of extreme poverty were willing to sell their children to Pearson.

“I congratulate Monster for allowing these people to tell their story without editorializing. I was so glad she did not put any representatives of government, law enforcers or the Church to give their opinion, “ Gallaga said.

“It was a dilemma faced by the filmmaker and the audience…it was a totally mature film that left us completely alone to face that experience,” he said.

Bacollywood curator Manny Montelibano said “It is a well balanced documentary that was presented in a light manner without being offensive to anyone.”

It is not like the usual melodramatic films with a lot of crying, it was presented in a style that was thought provoking and very effective, Montelibano said.

In 2001, Pearson was charged with 87 counts of rape committed against eight women, most of whom were minors, some of whom eventually withdrew their charges.

Pearson is now serving an 80-year sentence at the national penitentiary in Muntinlupa, after he was convicted of two counts of rape involving a 15-year-old girl.

Pearson began living in Ilog in 1979 and numerous women moved in with him. He also became a Muslim and has married about six times.

Jimenez in 2005 came to Negros to do an investigative story on Pearson and aside from her many interviews with him and his women, did research at the Visayan DAILY STAR.

Jimenez also went to Oregan to interview Pearson’s sisters who spoke of their growing up with an abusive stepfather and of their brother’s suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder also called “war shock” in Vietnam.

Jimenez described her documentary on Pearson as “a story of how love, power, violence and the deep roots of poverty and abuse intertwine the lives of a charismatic small–town boy from Oregon and countless women from one of the poorest areas of the Philippines.”

While the film does not judge, it tells the story of how parents willingly allow their young daughters to have affairs with Pearson for the money, of how siblings happily accepted being part of his harem and of physical abuse.

Pearson shows no remorse believing that he has done no wrong, and many of the women from his harem have continued to have sex with him in jail. In return they get financial support from him from the US pension he continues to get.

Jimenez said she visited Pearson at the national penitentiary after she won the award in Amsterdam and gave him a copy her documentary.

“He saw it and liked it,” she said.

She said Pearson appears to be doing well in Muntinlupa, has put on weight, and his women continue to visit him there.

The screening of “Kano” at the Bacollywood film festival was by invitation because Jimenez said she wanted to protect the women in the documentary.

Kano is the first documentary for Arkeofilms, an independent film production company where Jimenez is managing director.*CPG

A 5-day medical mission has been set February 21-25, 2011 by the Bacolod City Host Lions Club in collaboration with the Urban Angels, a medical team based in Toronto, Canada.

The medical mission is an 88-man team composed of Canadian surgeons, medicines and Filipino nurses, said club president Dr. Sidney Iledan. The medical mission already benefited thousands of Negrenses in three years of undertaking by the Urban Angels in collaboration with the Bacolod City Host Lions Club.

The mission team will conduct minor surgeries such as cyst or tumor removal, cataract surgery, diabetes screening, medical check-ups or consultation, nutritional feeding and dispensing of eye glasses, among others. Past President Dr. Nilo Del Carmen also announced during the club’s monthly regular meeting that a group of plastic surgeons have signified intention to conduct surgery of persons with cleft lip and palate. Indigent patients who may wish to avail of the free medical-surgical services may be referred to Lions club president Dr. Sidney Iledan, Dr. Eriberto Layda or at the office of Councilor Em Ang.

To date, aside from the medical mission, the club conducts 8 nutrition feeding projects a month in selected barangays in Bacolod City with Purok Mahinangpon in Barangay Puta Taytay as a pilot area beneficiary.

Meanwhile, the Lions Club is slated to have its cabinet meeting and district convention on February 19-20, 2011 at the Siliman University in Dumaguete City and the multiple district convention in Davao City on May 27-29, 2011.*

They way our national football team, Azkals are staying here, they are most welcome among Negrense who whole-heartely supported them. It was seen on their faces as they witness the team practicing in either University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos (UNO-R) or Panaad Stadium pitch. They come in throng eager to see the players in person, althhough we notcie that some women are trying to show them for a n important attention among the players, especially the much publicised Younghusbands brothers. In a week time they stay here and played tune-up matches among other teams like Negros Selection and Korena-back-up Central Philippine University (CPU) of Iloilo City, response of Negrense is unwavering. In a tune up match against CPU, nearly about 4,000 spectators witness the game that wonders many observers how Negrense supports football.

Yes, thanks to that wonderful win of the Azkals, the name of Pilippine Football team, over defending champion vietnam in AF Suzuki Cup last December. It madefootball popular in this part of the country. It helps back Filipino attention to the game that was seem neglected for several years. I mena it was ot given attention, not knowing theNegros was once the breeding ground of national football players, just like Barotac Nueve in Iloilo City.

Last Saturday, I was in Bacolod for an important appointment. I went to where the team practice at UNO-R. Actually, I came there notonly to watch how the team practice but to see personally two Negrense-UK players who came here to try their luck and earn a berth in the national team. Earlier, I observe how Negrense, both young and old are eager to see the team in person. They wrongly went to Panaad Stadium not knowing the team had practiveat UNO-R. What we did is told them about the Azkals and they hurriedly left to catch them t UNO-R. At least three groups had goe to Panaad Stadium that afternoon. I then proceeed to UNO-R, as i said, not only to witness how they practice but to see the two brothers, Ryan Alonte Garrucho Hall and James , Jr., trying to earn a slot in the national football team. They arrive Friday night alng with their father James, Sr., who is marie to Negrense Lori Alonte Garucho of Bulata, Cauayan. The two brothers actually were born in Cauayan and holder of Philippine passport.

Their father is a rertire football player and coach. These two guys are professional football players in england and they have a good crdentials as players. They started playing at age 15 and become professional players at 18.

Hope these two can make it in the team who are also forming a team for SEA Games in Indonesia this year.

Phil. Int’l Arts Fest Visayas kickoff slated in Negocc Provincial Capitol

The Visayas launching of the Philippine International Arts Festival (PIAF) 2011 will be held at the Negros Occidental Provincial Capitol on January 13 with a three-part grand opening salvo, starting at 2 p.m., organizers said.

The PIAF is a month-long celebration of the National Arts Month, which is now on its 20th year, organized by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA).

Part One is the opening of Artists’ Village at the Capitol Lagoon from 2 to 6 p.m. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be done at 2 p.m. and will be followed by simultaneous activities inside seven tents that represent the seven arts—architecture, cinema, dance, literature, music, theater, and visual arts— comprising the NCCA Subcommission on the Arts. Negrense musicians will heat up the Lagoon stage for a concert starting 4 p.m.

Part Two is the launching of PIAF 2011 at the Provincial Capitol Steps at 6 p.m. It will feature speeches of NCCA Officials and Governor Alfredo Maranon Jr., and performances of Louie Dormido, Provincial Capitol Choir, Poseidon, and Sigabong sang Kanyon of Bago City.

Part Three caps the artistic extravaganza with Celebration of Life Through the Arts concert at the Provincial Capitol Steps. It will showcase the best of Negros Occidental’s musical artists, such as the Colegio San Agustin Bacolod Chorale, Andres Bonifacio Elementary School Choir, West Negros University Chorale, Sum-ag Elementary School Children’s Choir, Rizal Elementary School Children’s Choir, University of Saint La Salle Chorale, Abdul Candao, Nenen Espina and Mary Ann Espina.

PIAF 2011 has activities happening all over the Visayas in selected sites in Bacolod, Bago, Boracay, Cebu, Dumagute, Iloilo, Miag-ao, Oton, San Joaquin, Silay and Tacloban.

The festival’s line-up of activities is designed to further Philippine Art and the Filipinos’ regard for local arts and culture. PIAF’s tagline “Ani ng Sining” will indeed prove to be a harvest for the arts as thousands of local artists and cultural workers will gather all over the Philippines for the biggest artistic celebration to date, organizers said.

Foreign artists will also join the festivities, organizers added.

The PIAF has been launched last January 30 at the Concert at the Park for the National Capital Region, yesterday (February 6) at People’s Park Davao for Mindanao region, and will be launched on February 20 at Burnharm Park in Baguio for Luzon.*

Students from the University made it again this year in the search for The Outstanding Students (THOS) by the Junior Chamber International (JCI) - Bacolod.

The recipients were awarded at the New Government Center last Feb. 5.

Senior BS Biology student and USG Executive President Julius Paul Juen made it to the top three of the search while USG Vice President Kathreen Alcantara made it to the top ten.

Juen also received the Best Speaker Award during the Finalists’ Forum while senior BS Information Technology student Timothy Williamson Sy was awarded the Service Award for the outreach activity he conducted at San Nicholas Church last Nov. 2010.

In a statement sent to the Center for External Relations, Juen shares his recognition to the whole Lasallian community especially to the people who have helped him achieve the award.

“I urge all Lasallian youth to take an active role in building a better society. There is a hero within us,” Juen said.

In the previous year, Kemp Vinson and Philippe Jan De La Cruz were THOS 2010 College Category Special Awardees for Best in Community Leadership and Best in Campus Leadership, respectively.

The annual THOS Awards is widely considered as a prestigious event which recognizes the best student leaders in the province of Negros Occidental who excel in the different fields they undertake.

Awardees are selected based on their academic excellence, leadership potential, dedication, hardwork, integrity and social responsibility.

well tani kung may ara gid man mapatindog sang amo na kataas diri sa Bacolod siguraduhon lang nila na preselling pa lang may makuha na kay kung wala may mabakal kag kung wala demand daw alang alang gid na :)

but its nice that Iloilo will have one, now they are on track with their league of regional cities

^^yeah pre selling is very important but it also depends on whose building it, a condominium is a risky investment especially when it's poorly maintained, if the building deteriorate so is the value of the unit and also a buyer needs to consider calamities it may be fire, earthquakes, bombing, crime etc....and amenities should also be considered, probably that's why horizon condo didn't sell well because in the first place, the prices of the units were incredibly expensive and rooms where low standard, in short cheap. :ohno:

^^Injap a well known local developer made a business risk of building a 21 storey condo and I guess they were confident with Iloilo's economy to back it up but bacolod has its own big developers naga hinay- hinay lang eventually the time will come. basi bala high rise man gid tuod wala man tao naga istar basi ghost tower ang gwa sina.:lol:

“AZKALS” German mentor Hans Michael Weiss said Azkals preparation for their highly anticipated match against Mongolia goes full swing with three days left before the kick off of the two-leg Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Challenge Cup qualifying stage.

Weiss, who facilitated the Azkals’ training since January, said the Azkals are playing “smart and fearless” with the way they handled and beaten up their young Korean rival in their second tune-up game on Thursday in Bacolod City.

“Everything turns out positive and we’re now focusing to beat Mongolia,” said Weiss, referring to Azkals’ first of the two schedule matches against Mongolia on February 9 at the Panaad field.

After a 4-4 draw against the All-Negros selection team dubbed as the Azukals on Tuesday, the Azkals made sure the match against Korea won’t go the same. They simply smothered the young aggressive Koreans, 4-1, on Thursday at the Panaad Gym.

“Our first match [against Azukals] was a test match,” said Weiss. “Although we made a good impression, I guess we could have played with more rhythm. The Koreans, for their part, are very good and aggressive.”

The Azkals are expected to rely on Simon Greatwitch, James and Phil Younghusband, Ian Araneta, team captain Aly Borromeo, Anton del Rosario and William Gueridonn, among others.

Weiss said the addition of Filipino-Dutch midfielder Jason de Jong and the return of 6’3” Filipino-British goalkeeper Neil Etheridge will strengthen the chances of the Philippine team.

Negros Occidental will be among the exhibitors at the 34th anniversary of the Technology Livelihood Resource Center on Feb.25-27 at SM Megamall, EDSA, Mandaluyong City, Gerard Tupas TLDC project development officer III said Friday.

He said this will be a great opportunity for the province to showcase quality and affordable products. Products and services of the small and medium enterprises will be given a chance to compete with other entrepreneurs, Tupas added.

He said the Innovations for Business Expo will be the main focus on the event. It advocates the development and the creation of innovative technologies that improves production in various business endeavors and opportunities, Tupas said.

The expo will also unveil to the public the different innovations conceptualized and applied in marketing, manufacturing, and business management, he said.

“We will be bringing the turmeric herbal tea of Mabinay town, Negros Oriental, yacon therapeutic wine of San Carlos City, piyaya, peanuts, and other products,” Tupas said.

Meanwhile, Tupas said local producers are set to meet to finalize what products to bring and who among them are willing to participate in the exhibit.

He also considers this as an opportunity for them to generate more funds and to promote and market products outside Negros Occidental.

The Bacolod-Negros Occidental Federation for Information and Communications Technology (BNEFIT) will hold the 5th Bacolod-Negros Occidental Information Technology (IT) Educational Fair on March 1-2, 2011 from 10am – 9pm at the Event Centre of SM City Bacolod.

Dubbed “ICT Olympics 2011”, it is an annual competition and exhibition that aims to encourage the participation of both public and private schools from elementary, secondary to tertiary levels.

BNEFIT Chair Jocelle Batapa-Sigue said this annual fair’s objectives also hopes to raise the level of consciousness and knowledge of the public regarding information and communication technology, ICT-related enterprises and industries, and its opportunities; provide a venue for all schools in Bacolod City and Negros Occidental to showcase, update and improve their ICT courses; strengthen the network and linkage among these schools in order to ensure adequate human resource for ICT enterprises in Bacolod and Negros Occidental; and to undertake activities that will stir the interest of the general public towards ICT.

BACOLOD, Philippines – Policemen and gov't troops in Negros Occidental will go on full alert starting Tuesday ahead of the football showdown between the Philippine Azkals and Mongolia on February 9.

More than 1,000 police officers and soldiers will be deployed inside and around the Panaad Park and Stadium, which will host the first leg of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Challenge Cup clash.

Bacolod City officials are also realigning vehicular traffic on roads leading to the stadium.

The North Road will be used by officials, players and VIPs, while ordinary football fans will have to use the South Road.

A pay-parking area is also being set up near the stadium.

Police, meanwhile, urged football fans to avoid bringing their children to the match.

THE national men’s football team may have fallen short in its determined bid to make the finals—and subsequently win a breakthrough title—of the Asean Football Federation (AFF) Suzuki Cup.

But their efforts won’t simply go unnoticed.

For overachieving in the biggest football competition in the region by making its semifinals for the first time, the group, collectively known as the Azkals, will be bestowed with the Presidential Achievement Award come March 5 at the Manila Hotel during the Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA)-Coca-Cola Annual Awards Night.

Team manager Dan Stephen Palami, president of the Leyte Football Association, and the man largely credited for forming the team that has become an overnight sensation, will share the spotlight with the Azkals as he will be the recipient of the Executive of the Year honor from the country’s oldest media organization during the special night also presented by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), Philippine Amusements and Gaming Corp. (Pagcor), San Miguel Corp., Harbour Centre, Nihao Mineral Resources International Inc. and Accel.

The Azkals, who lost their two semifinal games against Indonesia, were heavily considered for the 2010 Athlete of the Year honor by the PSA, but were beaten out for the coveted award by reigning World 9-Ball champion Francisco “Django” Bustamante and the trio of Asian Games gold-medal winners Biboy Rivera (bowling), Rey Saludar (boxing) and Dennis Orcollo (billiards).

Nonetheless, they will still be recognized by the association, composed of editors and sportswriters from the national broadsheets and tabloids, with one of its most significant awards—past recipients of which include boxing sensation Manny Pacquiao, four-time Philippine Basketball Association Most Vauable Player Alvin Patrimonio, the 2003 world women’s trio champion of Liza Del Rosario, Liza Clutario and Cecilia Yap of bowling, the 2002 Ateneo Blue Eagles champion team and billiards patron Sen. Manny Villar.

Receiving major awards in their respective fields are 14 outstanding individuals led by brothers Jean-Pierre and Brian Sabido and Anthony Matias, who bagged the gold medal in the Fifth World Taekwondo Federation World Poomsae Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

The National Sports Association of the Year award will be handed to the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines (Abap), while coaching legend Virgilio “Baby” Dalupan and celebrated international boxing referee Carlos Padilla Jr. will be honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award.

The Azkals earned a berth in the tournament proper of the Suzuki Cup by finishing second behind host Laos during the qualifiers. The team finished with one win and two draws, including a 5-0 crushing of Timor Leste.

BACOLOD CITY, Negros Occidental, Philippines — Citing more pressing concerns, President Aquino has begged off from attending the first leg of the AFC Challenge Cup qualifying match between the Philippines and Mongolia on Wednesday night (February 9) at the Panaad Stadium here.

The information was relayed to the Philippine Daily Inquirer by Philippine Olympic Committee chair Monico Puentevella, who said that Aquino expressed regrets for missing what has been considered as the most important match in the team’s history.

Puentevella, along with Philippine Sports Commission Chair Richie Garcia, had invited Aquino to see the match, which is expected to draw about 18,000 fans.

While his presence will be missed, Philippine Football Federation president Mariano “Nonong” Araneta said Aquino’s imprints have been all over the staging of the match.

The President, he said, gave a “substantial” amount to the organizers of the Azkals’ first home game in Bacolod in five years.

The last time the Azkals played here was in 2006 when they beat Brunei, 4-1, to make the main tournament of the Asean Football Federation Championship.

“President Aquino has expressed his regrets for not being able to come,” Puentevella said. “The country has so many problems that he has to attend to.”

A reliable source from the local organizing committee said that Aquino might be represented by elder sister Ballsy. (tani si Kris na lang!:nuts::lol::lol::lol:)

Speculations that the President was not coming heightened on Monday because no one from the Presidential Security Group had done a routine check at the Panaad.

However, Aquino’s absence will ease one security concern for organizers, who will deploy about 1,000 police and military personnel to secure the playing venue.

Puentevella said the 10,000 general-admission seats at the Panaad should easily be filled, citing the high demand for tickets.

Araneta has allotted 3,000 general admission tickets to the host province, which owns the Panaad. Several PFF-member associations will share 2,000.

BACOLOD CITY, Negros Occidental, Philippines — German coach Hans Michael Weiss is putting a tight leash on his Azkals.

Stressing the importance of the AFC Challenge Cup duel against Mongolia, Weiss has enforced a policy limiting the Azkals’ extra activities with the match at the Panaad Stadium a day away.

“It’s not a holiday or vacation recreation camp, it’s preparation for a very serious match and we’re on the verge of bringing the Philippines up to the landmark of football, and that is the start of getting more professional,” Weiss said.

Team manager Dan Palami later announced the 23-man squad for the showdown with skipper Aly Borromeo leading the side along with goalkeeper Neil Etheridge.

Except for the addition of Simon Greatwich, Jayson Sabio and Patrick Hinrichsen and the absence of Chris Greatwich, the lineup will be similar to that of the Philippine squad in the Suzuki Cup.

“The team that made history in Indonesia, they deserve to be in this match,” Weiss said.

Led by head coach Erdenebat Sandagdorj and assistant Bayanjargal Sharav, the 22-man Mongolian contingent arrived in the city on Monday.

Asked if he considered the Philippines a very good side, Sharav nodded. Mongolia, though, will only hold one practice session at the Panaad.

BACOLOD, Philippines (UPDATED) – Policemen and government troops in Negros Occidental will go on full alert starting Tuesday ahead of the football showdown between the Philippine Azkals and Mongolia on February 9.

More than 1,000 police officers and soldiers will be deployed inside and around the Panaad Park and Stadium, which will host the first leg of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Challenge Cup clash.

Bacolod City officials are also realigning vehicular traffic on roads leading to the stadium.

The North Road will be used by officials, players and VIPs, while ordinary football fans will have to use the South Road.

A pay-parking area is also being set up near the stadium.

Police, meanwhile, urged football fans to avoid bringing their children to the match.

Authorities will also ban bags inside the stadium.

Presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda, meanwhile, clarified Monday that President Benigno Aquino III will not be able to attend the match.

“The Palace has received reports that some media outlets in Bacolod are disseminating information that the President will be attending the AFC Challenge Cup on February 9. We would like to reiterate for the record that, while the President indeed holds the Philippine Azkals in high esteem-monitoring the team's performance in the past AFF Suzuki Cup and in fact even granting them an audience in the Palace upon their homecoming – there was never any confirmation that he will attend the game,” he said.

“The President recognizes the value of his office, particularly on the morale of our athletes and others who represent flag and country in competition. He would like to assure the Azkals of his appreciation for their efforts to reclaim our national pride,” he added.

Clueless Philippine team plays Mongolia, also clueless

MANILA, Philippines — Ranged against a team they’ve never met or much less played against, the Philippine Azkals will try to use their instincts and simply adjust on what Mongolia will bring to the table in their AFC Challenge Cup qualifying match Wednesday at the Panaad Stadium in Bacolod City.

“The only time we can size them up is when we are already playing,” Azkals assistant coach Edzel Bracamonte admitted saying they are clueless as much as the Mongolians are against the Azkals in their muchawaited encounter.

“So we’ll just try to adjust to their style of play.”

In adherence to German coach Hans Michael Weiss’ philosophy of aggressive play, Bracamonte said they intend to use a 4-4-2 formation against the Mongolians, the same ploy they utilized in the Suzuki Cup last year when the team was still under British coach Simon McMenemy.

That formation – four defenders, four midfielders and two forwards – worked wonders for the Azkals, who managed to limit the high-scoring Indonesians during their semis series.

The Azkals lost twice in the home-and-away series on identical 1-0 scores, but held the Indonesians to a significantly low output considering they were the best attacking team in the tourney with 13 goals with five players scoring twice each prior to
their clash with the Filipinos.

Bracamonte said the formation is very effective and is the same strategy used by Spain in winning last year’s World Cup at the expense of The Netherlands.

Even Germany loves to use the same formula.

The Mongolians arrived on Monday, and the Azkals were clueless of how their lower-ranked rivals play.

“Unlike in the Suzuki Cup, we don’t have any video to watch to get to know them better,” said Bracamonte.

The only scouting report that reached Philippine soil revealed that the Mongolians, ranked 182 by the FIFA, are composed of young players and they trained and played four matches in Guangzhou, China to acclimatize Philippine weather.

“We don’t know much about Mongolia which sometimes makes it difficult because we don’t know what to expect. But we will be more aggressive and more attack minded,” striker Phil Younghusband said whose team is ranked slightly higher at 152 by FIFA.

“I think the new coach (Weiss) wants me to play higher up the field to be more effective and closer to the goal,” Younghusband said. “We are very confident of a good result in front of our home fans and we want to entertain them as well as win.”

The Mongolians took a one-year hiatus, with their last international tournament being the AFC Challenge Cup qualifier against Macau back in 2009. They also lost to Guam, 0-1, one of the weakest teams in the world. With the team already complete with the arrival of Fil-Icelandic left back Ray Anthony Johnson Monday, Palami is confident they can give the fans a great show.

Meanwhile, Aly Borromeo, Eduard Sacapano, Neil Etheridge, Anton del Rosario, Jerry Barbaso, Kim Relucio, Joebel Bermejo, Rob Gier, Ray Jonnson, Nestorio Margarse, Emilio Caligdong, Simon Greatwich, Peter Jaugan, Mark Ferrer, James and Phil

BACOLOD City — Gov. Alfredo Marañon yesterday appealed to parents not to bring their children, especially those 12 years old and below, to the football match between the Team Azkals and the Mongolian team tomorrow.

He expects thousands of fans to troop the Panaad Park and Sports Complex to witness the match.

Due to the possibly tremendous crowd, the place might be unfit for children, the governor said.

Fans from the neighboring Panay Island requested for a parking accommodation at the Panaad Park for several buses, Marañon said.

Also, the governor does not think President Benigno Aquino III will witness the match.

Representatives from the Presidential Security Group and the Presidential Management Staff should already have made arrangements two or three days before the event, he said.

But there was no confirmation as of yesterday, he added.

Despite some petty glitches, tickets for the football match will be released today, Marañon said.

Meanwhile, the governor said he plans to improve the crowd capacity of the Panaad Stadium by constructing additional bleachers adjacent the grandstand.

Much bigger bleachers will definitely increase the seating capacity of the sports stadium, he said./PN

Panaad stadium all spruced up for RP vs. Mongolia encounter (http://www.visayandailystar.com/2011/February/08/sportnews1.htm)

Reserved tickets were released yesterday and seating arrangements at the grandstand were finalized as finishing touches were put on the stadium for tomorrow’s game between the Philippine national football team and the visiting Mongolia squad in the Asian Football Confederation Challenge Cup qualifying game.

Local organizers said Negros Occidenal Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. and other ticketed VIPs will be seated at the grandstand. They were advised earlier to hold on to their tickets as the “no ticket, no entry” and “one ticket, one person” policy will be strictly enforced even on local government officials.

All the lightings required for the game, which will start at 7 p.m. tomorrow, were already installed. The game will be covered live by ABS-CBN Studio 23.

Earlier, provincial Board Member Patrick Lacson said that four ticket booths will be opened at the entrance of the stadium to distribute the free tickets requested by Gov. Marañon from the Philippine Football Federation for general admission.

The free tickets will be for the bleachers surrounding the stadium. Those who will watch the game at the stadium are encouraged to wear white shirts to show support for the Azkals, who will be donning their white uniform for the game, Lacson said.

Meanwhile, team manager Dan Stephen Palami said the Azkals are overwhelmed with the warm welcome they received from the people of Bacolod City.

The team, he said, will be playing their best to make the people proud of the national team.

While little has been heard about Team Mongolia, Palami said the Azkals are always reminded to play a competitive game, irregardless of who their opponents are.

With the arrival of midfielder Rob Gier yesterday, the Azkals are now complete. Training with the team are Fil-foreigners James and Ryan Hall, Gerry Lucena, and Dennis Cagara

While the four new recruits are now considered part of the team, they will not be able to play in tomorrow’s match as they have to settle their Philippine passports, Palami said.

After tomorrow’s game at the Panaad, the Philippine and Mongolia teams will be playing the second leg of the playoff match in Mongolia in March.

The team with the highest aggregate score after the two games will advance in the next round of the AFC Challenge Cup.*NAB

The San Carlos City government has launched an earth-based construction material known as Interlocking Compressed Earth Block or the San Carlos Enviro-Blox and inaugurated its resource center called the Philippine Earth Construction Resource and Reference Center Building, recently, a press release from the city said.

The Enviro-Blox is an environment-friendly construction material and is now for wide application, mainstreaming and direct use, the press release said.

Under a public, private partnership with The Julio and Florentina Ledesma Foundation Inc. as the technology provider and facilitator, 16 classrooms will be constructed as an output of the on-the-job ICEB Training Courses under its construction application and use.

This will benefit 1,135 upland public school students and teachers as direct beneficiaries or 6,810 indirect individual recipients within the upland rural communities of San Carlos, the press release said.

Mayor Gerardo Valmayor Jr. and City Vice Mayor Dr. Edgardo Quisumbing led the launch.

German Development Service Welwaerts Volunteers, key personnel from the city’s engineering office and Building Officials, senior officers from JF Ledesma Foundation and the urban poor leaders and officers of Earth-based Community Builders and Workers Association also attended the event.

Valmayor’s vision under the partnership and engagement is to make San Carlos City as the capital of earth construction in the Philippines showcasing the environment-friendly earth-based construction technology as a trademark of the city’s infrastructure initiatives, the press release said.*

RP Azkals team manager Dan Palami personally invited Bacolod Mayor Leonardia and the city officials to the Azkals versus Mongolia Team qualifying game tomorrow during a courtesy call at the Bacolod City Government Center yesterday.

Palami said their visit was an opportunity to invite the mayor and the city officials to watch the qualifying game tomorrow.

Asked why the city did not have any official communication from the Philippine Football Federation, Palami said he believes that the PFF has a lot of things to do.

“I am sure there will be an invitation to be sent. But even before that, we have extended our personal invitation as the Azkals to the city government,” he said.

Palami said they have the home crowd to win the game against Team Mongolia. With that alone and the support of the Bacolonons, he believes they will give the Mongolia Team a good fight, he said.

RP Azkals head coach Hans Wise said they have prepared and trained the team well and they are ready for the match tomorrow.

During their courtesy call yesterday at the Mayor’s Office, the Azkals sang a birthday song for their goal keeper Neil Etheridge who was celebrating his birthday.

Leonardia told the media after the team left that he was asked by Palami if they have received an invitation from the PFF and he answered that they have none.

What is important are the things needed for the games to become successful and this is what they will work on, he said.

“This is not politics. This about our name since the Philippine will be at stake so we should support the Azkals,” he added.

Leonardia said he has called up acting Bacolod Police Director Senior Supt. Ricardo de la Paz and Bacolod Traffic Authority Office head Chief Inspector Levy Pangue to review the traffic arrangements and add traffic enforcers.

De la Paz is also coordinating and will cooperate with the Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office that is running the show, he said.

Asked if he will be watching the game, Leonardia said if he is given a ticket he will go. As of yesterday, he has no official invitation from the PFF to the games yet, he said.

“As a matter of courtesy, the city should be given an x number of tickets since there are many people asking for tickets because they assume that, in as much as the games is being held in Bacolod City, the city will have some say there,” he said.

Leonardia said he believes the PFF was misled somewhere, that is why until now they have not been given tickets when the game is already tomorrow.

“But I have no bitterness here. I do not take this personally at all,” he said. He is just concerned for the success of the game and wants the people to enjoy it, he added.

Meanwhile, City Treasurer Annabelle Badajos said they have learned through the media admission tickets are being printed/distributed/sold for the soccer game tomorrow at the Panaad Sports Stadium in Mansilingan, featuring the Mongolian National Team against the RP Azkals, in her letter dated Feb. 7, 2011 to the mayor.

She said that as of yesterday, her office has not received any communication whatsoever from the organizers of the event, so they intend to levy the necessary amusement taxes on the gross receipts, if their basis is proven right, and if it has the mayor’s approval.

Badajos’ letter was endorsed by Secretary to the Mayor Rodel Parcon to Vice Mayor Jude Thaddeus Sayson.

Leonardia said that under the city ordinances these kind of events should be charged amusement taxes.

He said they may not be aware so until now they have not asked for an exemption. If they make that move, the SP can act on their request during their session tomorrow morning, he added.*CGS

Rob Gier is in and the Azkals are complete. So is Team Mongolia, whose players arrived yesterday in Bacolod City, ready for tomorrow’s clash against the Philippine national football team in the AFC Challenge Cup qualifying playoff match at the Panaad Park and Sports Stadium.

While the visiting squad from Mongolia opted torest at Luxor Hotel, the national team paid a courtesy call on Bacolod City Mayor Evelio Leonardia at theGovernment Center and visited University of St. La Salle before proceeding to Panaad stadium for their first training as a complete team.

Team Mongolia is scheduled to have a light practice this morning at the USLS pitch then at the Panaad stadium in the evening.

Earlier, Azkals’ coach Hans Michael Weiss said getting past Mongolia is their main goal and they can not afford to be complacent about tomorrow’s game.

While he expressed confidence that they have a very strong team, in previous interviews, Weiss said their focus is to win the game and qualify against Mongolia.

“You never know what will happen and we are not thinking of any other game but the one we play against Mongolia tomorrow,” Weiss said after the Feb. 3 game against the Iloilo City based Korean team.

FIFA records show that the Mongolia national football team was founded in 1959 but failed to play any national games from 1960 to 1998.

For the few international games it played, the Mongolians have only won seven games against only three opponents, four against Guam, two against Macau and one against the Northern Mariana Islands.

In 2006, Mongolia was originally selected participate in the AFC Challenge Cup but was replaced later. It was again tapped to join the tournament in 2008 but the team decided not to join.

Presently, Mongolia is ranked 182nd in the FIFA rankings.*NAB

As of this writing, no request for tax exemption has been filed with the city by organizers of the Azkals-Mongolians football match tomorrow, February 9, 2011.

Annabelle Badajos, City Treasurer of Bacolod City has notified Mayor Evelio Leo-nardia that it is a mandated task of the Office to impose amusement tax on exhibition games featuring players of national or international teams, as stipulated in Article VI, Section 19 of City Ordinance 154 Series of 1995.

The event will be held at the Panaad Sports Stadium, Brgy. Mansilingan, Bacolod City, featuring the Mongolian National Team and our very own AZKALS.

Since the Office has not received any request from the organization relevant to the exhibition games of Azkals-Mongolians, Badajos said "we intend to levy the necessary amusement taxes on the gross receipts, if our basis proves right, and further, if it has no imprimatur.

The same letter was endorsed to the Office of Sang-guniang Panlungsod through Vice Mayor Thaddy Sayson as presiding officer.

Sayson said, it is a standard operating procedure for every event, that we collect 30% amusement tax, unless there is a request for exemption and the city council approves said exemption.

In the case of Azkals-Mongolian football match, if the organizers fail to make the necessary request for exemption, then the city has no choice but collect the amusement tax, pursuant to the Revenue Code of Bacolod City.

Sayson also said, that for tickets being sold, except those given out for free, an automatic 30% amusement tax will have to be imposed.

He further explained that tax exemption granted by the city intended for charitable institutions, is up to 25% only, and the remaining 5% will be collected by the city.

According to Mayor Evelio Leonardia, the Azkals team members and officials who paid a call on him yesterday, begged for an apology because they were not aware what is happening behind.

Still, the mayor has not received invitation from the Azkals organizers. "I have no bitterness and I don’t take this personally. If they want exemption, they should ask for it. If no request for exemption, they city will charge amusement tax on the organizers. They have until today, after this, the city will send the tax collectors to watch the entrance to become the basis in collecting tax from the contractor.

600 TICKETS VIP’S IN BACOLOD CITY

Councilor Caesar Distrito said, Mr. Red Avelino, representative of the Philippine Football Federation said the organizers have tapped former Cong. Charlie Cojuangco as chairman of the Negros Occidental Football Association (NOFA), who had tried to act as bridge between the city officials and the event organizer.

He quoted Mr. Avelino’s statement, who reported that the organizing committee in Manila has provided 600 tickets to former Cong. Monico Puentevella as chairman of the Philippine Olympic Committee. But as of this writing, Former Cong. Puentevella is beyond reach for comment.

Tickets for sale are P600. 00, and P300.00 for accommodation at the left and right of the gym; the P600.00 per accommodation is located at the center. The free ticket holders are surrounding the vicinity.

NEGROS Occidental Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr. cautioned the Negrenses who will watch tomorrow's game of the Team Azkals against Mongolia at the Panaad Park and Stadium to avoid bringing children as 20,000 spectators are expected to troop to the 15,000-capacity venue.

The Philippines will battle Mongolia for the 2012 AFC Challenge Cup qualifying tournament. Game One will be played tomorrow while Game Two will be played on March 15 at Ulan Bator, Mongolia.

"Because of the large number of people expected to watch the match, it is better to avoid bringing children because they might get hurt in the rush of the crowd," the governor said. "Moreover, they cannot yet appreciate and enjoy the game."

Negros Occidental Provincial Police Office Director Allan Guisihan, who is in-charge of the overall security at the stadium during the game, also echoed the governor's call.

Due to the expected huge turnout, Marañon disclosed that Panaad Stadium in-charge Ian De Ramos is planning to extend an additional 10 layer seats for the bleachers for the convenience of the spectators.

On the other hand, the governor reiterated that the provincial government only provides the venue for the game. The Capitol has no control over the distribution of tickets for the match, citing that the provincial government was only provided with a certain number of tickets by the Philippine Football Federation (PFF).

However, Marañon said, the promised tickets of PFF have not yet been given to the Capitol as of yesterday, adding that the organizers promised to deliver them today.

Many interested spectators have been making inquiries about the tickets, especially those that will be given free to the public.

Meanwhile, Marañon said President Benigno Aquino III is probably not coming to witness the game.

Usually the advance party and the members of the Presidential Security Group (PSG) comes three days before the President's arrival but as of yesterday, there was no official notice sent to the Capitol from Malacañang.

Senators Ramon Revilla, Loren Legarda, Juan Miguel Zubiri and Teofisto Guingona III are expected to be present for the game. (Teresa Ellera-Dulla)

Soccer mania

It is impossible not to get caught up in the ongoing "Azkal" fever that seems to have infected the whole country and the resulting resurgence of soccer as a major sport in the country.

It is with pride that I can say that I grew up in Bacolod City, Negros Occidental, which will be the site of the first leg of the Asian Football Federation (AFC) Challenge Cup qualifier between the Philippines and Mongolia on Tuesday, February 9.

Friends and football fans have recently been asking me why Bacolod seems to be the soccer capital of the Philippines.

I really do not have any historical explanation. However, I remember that starting when I was in Grade 2 and all throughout my grade school and high school years, I was competing in a soccer intramural league every school year.

I also remember that during the summer breaks, playing in pickup football games was quite common.

Aside from La Salle-Bacolod, two other schools that had very good teams then were Don Bosco and the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos. There were also teams that came from Iloilo and Dumaguete to play against our local teams. But I do not ever remembering any team from Manila coming to play soccer although there were regular visits from Manila-based collegiate and commercial basketball teams.

For those who are new to the game, there are certain soccer terms that one should be familiar with. Outside North America and a few countries, like the Philippines, soccer is actually known as "football." The game is actually the world’s most popular sport and its star players are the highest paid athletes in the world.

In Southeast Asia, it is only in the Philippines where soccer is not the most popular national sport.

History

The word soccer is derived from "association football," which is the traditional name for the game in British Commonwealth countries.

Ball-kicking games can be traced at least as far back as ancient Greece and China.

However, modern soccer originated in 19th-century England.

The Football Association laid down the first set of rules in 1863, and the first organized league was established in 1888 in England.

It is believed that the game was carried outside Britain by sailors and expatriates. And since at that time, it is said that the "sun never sets on the British Empire," the game quickly caught on in the rest of Europe, South America, and Asia.

The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), the world’s official governing body for the sport, was founded in 1904, with headquarters in Paris (later moved to Zurich). Soccer became a medal sport in the Olympic Games in 1908. In 1930, FIFA organized the World Cup, a tournament contested every every four years to determine international soccer supremacy.

Rules of the game

Soccer is played in a field or "pitch" which is rectangular in shape.

Measuring 100-130 yards long (depending on the league rules) and 50 yards wide. Each team consists of 11 players including a goalkeeper.

The goalkeeper is the only player who may touch the ball with the hands or arms and only within a designated area.

The other players attempt to advance the ball by kicking or sometimes heading it to a teammate. The objective is to force the ball into the opponent’s goal -- 24 feet wide and 8 feet high -- at the far end of the field. In high-level competition, a match lasts 90 minutes and is played in 45-minute halves.

Glossary of soccer terms

In order to fully appreciate soccer, there are certain terms the uninitiated should be familiar with. Here are a few:

Card. A disciplinary system available to the referee. The yellow card is given for overly tough fouls or for persistent fouling by a single player. On violent fouls, such as a lunging tackle from behind, the referee may choose to show a red card, thereby expelling the offending player from the game. Two yellow cards incurred by the same player during the course of a match equal a red.

Free Kick. The action that returns the ball to play after a foul. The victimized team is allowed a 10-yard circle free of enemy defenders. Near the opposing goal, free kicks offer good shooting opportunities. A penalty kick is a free kick taken from the penalty spot.

Formation. A team’s alignment of players on the field. This is described with a set of three numbers, representatives of the defenders, midfielders, and forwards that add up to 10 which excludes the goalkeeper. For example, in a 3-4-3 , for example, there will be 3 defenders, 4 midfielders, and 3 forwards.A team can choose any formation it wants.

Handball. Intentionally touching the ball with one’s hand, strictly forbidden in soccer, the exception being the goalkeeper while in the penalty area. If the ball hits the hand, and the referee determines the player did not touch the ball intentionally, then the referee often lets play continue. Otherwise, if the referee judges a handball, the result is a free kick for the other team.

Offside. An infraction at the moment the ball is passed by a teammate, and the offensive player does not have two opposing defenders with the goalkeeper counted as one between him and the goal line. The attacker is considered offside, and this infraction awards a free kick to the defending team. This is the much misunderstood offside rule.

Game Time. Game time is 45 minutes per half. However stoppage time is added at the end of each half. Stoppage time refers to the period of time at the end of either half to account for substitutions, injuries and time-wasting.

Next to the Olympics, the World Cup is considered the premiere event in international sports. Perhaps 2014 is too soon, but surely a Philippine team playing in the 2018 World Cup is a worthwhile goal.
