Manapla’s famous
son gives back
BY CARLA GOMEZ
The economic growth of Manapla is getting a boost from a famous orthopedic surgeon and inventor.
Dr. Ramon Gustilo, 80, who was head of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Hennepin Count Medical Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and has invented devices and instruments in joint replacements and fracture fixations that have allowed him to earn millions of dollars in royalties, said he has returned to his hometown to give back.
Gustilo said he does not believe in outright charity, he believes in creating opportunities for people to have jobs.
The doctor has built Northland Resort Hotel, a subdivision, a mangrove plantation, and a church in Manapla, and plans to construct a factory for processing dried mangoes for export soon.
The doctor said he was born in 1930 to Jose and Consuelo Gustilo, who owned a small sugarcane farm in Manapla. When he was a boy his job was to take care of their carabaos. “I was a baquero,” he said.
He said when he was 12 years old he fell off one of the carabaos in a rainstorm and landed in the mud.
“I promised myself then: I will never be this poor! I will not spend my life watching stupid carabaos in this miserable weather,” Gustilo said.
“It was a stimulus to do something more about my life, my parents were not rich but they said they would give me the best education they could give,” he said.
Gustilo narrates the story of his life from his early days in Manapla to his work in the Unites States as a famous orthopedic surgeon and inventor in his book titled: “I will not be poor again.”
Gustilo studied at the Manapla Elementary School, Negros Occidental High School and acquired his medical degree from the University of the Philippines in Dilliman in 1957.
He then went to the United States for further training and was accepted in the orthopedic residency program of the University of Minnesota and married Gloria Carlson, with whom he has five children.
“Success in life is not just talent, it comes from working hard,” said Gustilo, whose research work have led to numerous inventions in orthopedics.
He had the biggest professional orthopedic practice in the US, and earned royalties from the patents on his inventions, Gustilo said.
Aside from the Midwest Orthopedic Research Foundation, and the Gustilo Learning Center in Minneapolis, the doctor has an orthopedic manufacturing facility in Cabuyao, Laguna.
He is also chairman of the board of SCRIPSYS, a transcription corporation on medical records with central office in Minneapolis and a transcription facility in Manila, and has organized the Loyola International Multi Specialty Center in Quezon City.
He said investing in Manapla and the Philippines is his way of giving back because you can’t take what you have with you.
“My wife and I believe that our obligation to our children was to give them an education, not to make them rich. They are now earning their own money and can take care of themselves,” he said.
Rep. Alfredo Marańon III (Neg. Occ., 3rd District) said “the people of Manapla are very lucky to have Dr. Gustilo. Having done well in life, he is now giving back to Manapla, and we are very thankful that he is investing here.”
Manapla Mayor Lourdes Escalante said Gustilo is also proposing to set up an export zone in Manapla, which is under study.
She said three new subdivisions have gone up in Manapla, a provincial road to Punta Salong and a port are being built, and six processing plants in the town process the town’s famous blue crabs for export.
“We also have vast lands open to investors who wish to come to Manapla,” she said.*CPG

TUBO KAG MADAMO PA
By: Rogie Bacosa
Chorus 1:
Dali na sa Negros magbisita
Agud mapamatud-an ang pagka-anyag niya
Pasalamat kag Sinulog, Sinigayan, Dinagsa
Pasaway, Bailes de Luces, Tigkalalag, Pintaflores
Sa Panaad kadto na kay pwerte ka sadya!!!
Chorus 2:
Dali na sa Negros kag mamyesta
Agud nga mabusog sa pagpalangga niya
Dali na agud aton makita
Sa Negros may tubo kag madamo pa.
Apang bisan ano pa man nga mga pagkabutang
Ang tunay nga bugal kag kalipayan sang tanan
SA Diyos, sa banwa, kag sa pamilya, mapinalanggaon
Daw tubo sa katam-is, gugmang Negrosanon
(Repeat Chorus 1)
Dali na agod aton makita
Sa Negros may tubo, sa Negros may tubo, sa Negros may tubo.......kag madamo pa!!! (Kag madamo pa!)
kanami gid sine, kanami man sang lyrics....thanks mig..:)

Rustans?...WOW!...I'm sure Bacolod is ready for that, not to mention the shop-a-holic Negrenses who love to splurge on expensive things (one of the not-so-nice-qualities of elites here).
But we have no idea yet but with Starbucks Philippines being a Rustan's (Tantoco) franchise also here in Bacolod, we might conclude that they might be looking for a 2nd site for Starbucks...or if you said "mall"...hmmmm....thats a thing to behold...maybe a smaller version of Rustan's Dept Store plus/or its Supermarket is very likely...either a small one in a commercial row of the proposed Ayala Retail Strip, or putting it beside Starbucks 18th St. or ..... at Balay Quince in front of L'Fisher Hotel...heheheheheec:banana:

jedai_blaze April 4th, 2011, 09:14 AM Emerging filmmakers prepare to document Philippine history
The winners of the 2010 Toronto Reel Asian International Film Festival’s Pitch Prize - filmmakers Shasha Nakhai, Rich Williamson and Nicole Rogers - bring DOCspace the latest news on the -preproduction of their award-winning documentary project, The Sugar Bowl.
The Sugar Bowl will explore the vast sugar cane industry that was once the primary source of income for the residents of the Negros Islands in the Philippines. During the eras of the Spanish and American colonization in the Philippines, sugar was a large commodity extracted from the sugar mills on the Negros Islands, giving it the appropriate name of “The Sugar Bowl”. Once the sugar mills were not needed anymore, the economy collapsed, leaving the residents to face a life of hardship.
Director (and DOCspace member) Shasha Nakhai wants audiences to be inspired by the current stories of the people on the Negros Islands, focusing on their resilience even in the face of their harsh history. The Sugar Bowl will take a positive angle on the lives of the Island residents and illustrate their contentment and celebration of life despite all the difficulty they have faced.
Nakhai, who was born on the Negros Island, came to Canada as an international student and graduated from Ryerson University’s Broadcast Journalism Program in 2009. Nakhai always wanted to tell the story of the people on the Island and worked towards making it a reality with her fellow Ryerson alumni, Williamson and Rogers, both graduates of Ryerson’s Film and Broadcast Journalism program.
Nakhai, Williamson and Rogers are traveling to the Philippines to shoot the documentary. With the help of Nakhai’s family, the team has been able to set up interviews with veterans of the sugar mills still living in the community, with more interviews still in the process of being set up. So far, the reaction to Nakhai and her team working on this project has been met with positivity and excitement, as the people of the island want to share their unique story with the world.
Nakhai says that that in her experience, few people know about the Philippines and its rich history. The judges at the 2010 Toronto Reel Asian International Film Festival’s Pitch competition were unaware of the situation on the Negros Island and intrigued by her pitch. Nakhai feels that there needs to be a stronger representation of Philippine stories in film and this is her way of giving back to the Philippine community in Toronto. Additionally, she wants to document the old sugar mills and steam locomotives before they disappear altogether in a few years.
By winning the Pitch Prize the team received $10,000 worth of equipment rental and post-production services at Charles Street Video, a one year membership with Charles Street Video, $1500 in cash and distribution options through Ouat Media, with a broadcast on Movieola and Air Canada. They also have the opportunity to screen their finished documentary at the 2011 Toronto Reel Asian International Film Festival.
The Sugar Bowl is being produced with support from the Toronto Arts Council and the team has been working hard to raise additional funds through private donations and the crowdfunding website IndieGoGo (www.indiegogo.com/sugarbowl).
Nakhai and her team are hosting a fundraiser in Toronto for The Sugar Bowl on Friday, March 25 from 7 pm to 11 pm at the Kapisanan Philippine Centre for Arts & Culture, 167 Augusta Avenue in Kensington Market. All are welcome to attend. For more information about The Sugar Bowl visit www.wix.com/sfnakhai/the-sugar-bowl and check out the project on DOCspace at http://docspace.ca/film/the-sugar-bowl.

bacolodchamp April 4th, 2011, 12:12 PM 1st 'fully integrated' Ayala Land community launched in Negros
Monday, April 4, 2011
RECOGNIZING Negros Occidental as a key growth area in Western Visayas, leading real estate developer Ayala Land formally launched the region’s first “fully-integrated and master-planned community” dubbed Ayala North Point (ANP) last April 2 in Talisay City.
Ayala Land head for Visayas and Mindanao (VisMin) Emilio Tumbocon said “creating integrated mixed-used communities is essential to our expansion plans. These developments incorporate commercial, residential, retail and office spaces which complement each other to provide a live-work-play convenience for the community.”
This fully integrated community, located in a 215-hectare prime land amid the bustling cities of Bacolod and Silay, features themed residential and commercial developments that “make up a robust business district and growth center” expected to “spur economic development and enhance the social landscape in Negros.”
These include the Plantazionne Verdana Homes (PVH), Ayala’s “first affordable subdivision in the VisMin region where the clustered lot design encourages community interaction among families and friends living close to each other. Plantazionne focuses on the needs of families, overseas workers, professionals, entrepreneurs and retirees for a secure and beautiful community.” As of the March 29, 2011 inventory, 586 of its 587 saleable lots were already sold.
Verdana Homes Asyana, on the other hand, is envisioned as a community “for active families and showcases the best of Asian designs through modern Asian architecture. Some 118 of its 247 total lot inventory are still up for grabs through various financing options.
Avida Village is an 18.11-hectare residential development offering house and lot packages with 945 total saleable units. Priced from P1.6 million to P2 million, it targets “young, established and successful Negrenses who want to live in an exclusive community with the ready convenience of buying a house and lot package.”
Amaia Scapes, a sub-land of Avida, “caters to the broad affordable market segment” with its house and lot (H&L) package price ranging from P650,000 to P1.2 million. There are 1,553 total H&L units available through Pag-ibig and other financing schemes.
For the office and commercial component, a BPO campus starting with ANP’s techno hub -- an IT Park that is already registered by the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (Peza) -- is also being developed, Tumbocon said. Target completion for this two-level structure that has a gross leasable area of 5,000 square meters is on June 2011.
A two-storey building with 13 classrooms for nursery and office areas had also been developed in a 5-hectare lot. “Plans for expansion of this development include a sports complex and auditorium, among others.” There is also a gasoline station with a convenience store as well as other utilities provided within the community.
Tumbocon also committed “to continue to shape Negros’ landscape and to cater to the growing needs of the market in the region.” (CGC)

8 prospective locators gid ya mga migs....:cheers1:...
Ayala North Point Assured of Sufficient Water and Electricity
By Gil Alfredo B. Severino
Who are the investors in their right minds would locate in an area without sufficient water and electricity supply? Where will the Local Government Units (LGU) learned how to build and run a city?
For investors and LGU governance alike, the 200 hectare Ayala North Point fully integrated, master-planned community in Negros which was launched over the weekend is assured of an all sufficient deep well water sources augmented by the Talisay City Water District, according to its General Manager Therese Borromeo.
Sufficiency of water is a "non-negotiable" basic essential service for the survival of a community, not just a subdivision, composes of Ayala North Point, Verdana Homes, Plantazionne, Verdana Homes Asyana, and soon, the affordable homes of Avida Village North Point and Amaia Scapes North Point.
Water is not just available, Borromeo explained, but that the flood-free Ayala Land North Point Community has excellent "after use water drainage system" which releases water to its vicinity river, "cleaner than the water of these river itself."
Indeed, a microcosm of what a city should be in terms of maintaining ecological balance needed to sustain life, which is the mission of the Ayala Property Management Corporation (APMC) which is the "preservation of the environment and the development of the communities we are doing business in."
Ayala Property Management Corporation (APMC) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Ayala Land, Inc. engaged in integrated property management services including building administration and maintenance, lease administration activities, commercial center and subdivision maintenance, and special technical services.
Central Negros Electric Cooperative, Inc. (Ceneco) on the other hand said that as a matter of their social responsibility, the employment component of the Ayala North Point fully integrated master-planned community like any other employment generation entity within its franchise area, is assured electricity supply priority allocation, for as long as Negros is assured of electricity generation supply within the Visayan Grid.
Part of the integrated master-planned community is the construction of the Ayala Land North Point Technohub envisioned to be a fully integrated information technology (IT) and IT-enabled services community backed by several low-rise Business Process Outsourcing facilities with a total gross leasable area (GLA) of about 40,000 square meters.
Other than the Technohub the construction of which is almost done and presently has eight prospective locators therefore projected to generate some 15,000 jobs will be supported by a retail commercial center component near the main entrance of the North Point. Borromeo, while leading the tour of the Technohub and the Ayala low cost Avida Village North Point and Amaia Scapes North Point disclosed that the former is now presidentially proclaimed under the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) as the first IT Park outside of Bacolod.
The presence of the Ayala investments in Negros Occidental marks an addition to the regional economic growth through the BPO industry, not just in the Island of Negros but for the entire region as well.*

bacolodchamp April 4th, 2011, 12:39 PM Hi everyone I'm new to this page and I would like to make friends with you guys and I love the developments in our hometown. Anyway can someone confirm if Rustan's Bacolod will put up a branch here? My sister told me that they are still looking for a lot and they are going to build the mall by 2012.
you mean if rustans will put up a branch in Bacolod? no news as of the moment and i guess if ever, they will not build a mall here, instead, they will just be an anchor depstore/supermarket of a mall ....i am not sure though if its true but i guess we got a clue from one of Ayala execs about the planned mall aside from the strip, so siguro... pag may ayala na, saka na magkaka rustans ang Bacolod but theres no confirmation yet:)
Wait lang kami migs ah sa bulu-balita:banana:
Amu gid...might be not that tall or huge basta "may ara nga masunod"
Ay te...don't worry. tell the Tantoco's and Mr.Lopez that Bacolod could wait for that NEXT STARBUCKS...hehehehehehe :cheers::cheers:
^^i'm trying to get the connection mga migs and this is how my "lightweight" mind can come up with. if indeed that that rumor is true, its more inclined as what migo SUV hinted it, that ayala might be it. their partnership (ayala and rustans) over the years is evident in glorietta where rustans is the anchor store and in metropoint where shopwise is also the anchor store. we also can not discount the possibility that the araneta group "might" be pursuing its long overdue plan to construct the araneta center of the south where shopwise is among those that occupies a chunk of araneta center. either way, its good for bacolod and the entire negros island because it will definitely stir a new shopping experience for all of us.

^^this story simply warms the heart, i guess that's what every negrosanon's dream in and around the world; to give back in every way he can. hats off to these people.

bacolodchamp April 4th, 2011, 02:14 PM read this guys...so it can be told. negros money built the lopez business empire! interesting, isn't it?:)
World Business: Assault on the Powerful
Friday, Sep. 07, 1962
In the Philippine Republic, where political power and economic power are closely intertwined, few have ever played the double game so well as the brothers Lopez —Eugenio, 61, and Fernando, 58. The older and dominant brother, wizened, unsociable Eugenio. presides over "the Molasses Fund." the war chest out of which the Philippines' potent handful of big sugar planters underwrite the politicians of their choice. Personable Brother Fernando, the team's working politician, served as Vice President in the sleazy administration of President Elpidio Quirino (1948-53), and is currently president protem-pore of the Philippine Senate.
Wrong Bet. With easy access to government credit as their prime instrument, the Lopez brothers have parlayed their family's 3,700-acre sugar plantation on Negros Island into one of the Philippines' biggest business empires. In 1947, Eugenio bought Manila's morning Chronicle (circ. 44,750), and by adding to it a string of 25 TV and radio stations soon emerged as a communications king. In 1951, with a generous loan from the state-owned Philippine National Bank, he bought Asia's largest sugar refinery, the Binalbagan-Isabela Sugar Co., Inc. Last year, after expanding the Lopez holdings to include more sugar mills, a cement company and a jute-bag plant, the brothers pulled off their biggest coup. Worried by a campaign against foreign ownership of Philippine utilities that was sparked by the Lopez-owned Chronicle, the U.S.-owned General Public Utilities Corp. decided to sell off its big, well-run Manila Electric Co. Head of the government-underwritten Philippine syndicate that bought Manila Electric: Eugenio Lopez.
Just at this triumphant point in their careers, however, the brothers made a bad political bet. They backed the unsuccessful efforts of President Carlos Garcia to win a second term for his discredited regime. When crusading Winner Diosdado Macapagal moved into Manila's presidential palace last January, he went after politically entrenched businessmen in general, and the Lopez brothers in particular. The Lopez group, Macapagal bluntly told the nation, "is using political power and influence to promote the interests of its business empire."
Unfinished Business. In the past, when confronted with reform administrations, Philippine businessmen have pulled back a little and waited for normalcy to return. Adhering to this tradition, Eugenio Lopez agreed to sell off for $9,000,000 the Philippine Planters Investment Co., the holding company that controlled the Lopez sugar, cement and jute interests. Buyers: a syndicate of Philippine and U.S. investors headed by Vincent Checchi, a Washington, D.C., management consultant. The Philippine government gave its approval. But President Macapagal was not finished with the Lopez brothers. Fortnight ago, the government brought charges of personal income tax evasion against both brothers and accused Fernando of illegal interests in government contracts. Last week Macapagal ordered a probe of the profits the Lopez brothers made in the sale of Philippine Planters, and levied a $347,580 back-tax assessment against the company, which the Lopez brothers are to challenge in court. To the wonderment of Manila, wealth and influence no longer seemed to be an automatic guarantee of immunity in the Philippines.

Hmmmm!...sakto man gid na...tikal na para sa iban but that is a fact. Try reading books bala...those old ones on the sugar industry kay indi gid na da madula ang Negros...
Sakto na ang fact nga that before the end of the Spanish Rule until the Martial Law, three-quarters of the income of the Philippines fro exports are from sugar...thanks to the Laurel-Langley Agreement...hehehehehe...damo gid ni ang nakapulos sa sugar industry...ang mga pantalan sa tabok sang Negros isa na sa nag uswag todo-todo with the sugar industry...damu damu pamilya nga nagtabok diri nga nag gulpi manggaranon pa gid....that's the magic of sugar industry.
Try talking to Modesto Sa-onoy, Rudy Reveche, Msgr Gaston, Ramon Hofilena or browse at the books on the history of the Augustinian Recollects kay ara gid na da ang Negros.
As what Mr.Sa-onoy has said he is still constantly searching here and abroad on the history of Negros Occidental kay gina tipon ya. Ang history abi sang Negros is quite obscured sometimes or overlapping with the history of Iloilo due to the Spanish organization of regional jurisdiction.
Much more pa is there in our province's history ang wala pa na discover...waiting to be written and subject to scrutiny...pero ang mahambal ko lang...AT LEAST MAY KINAUGALINGON NA NGA IDENTITY ANG NEGROSANON

"Panaad" means a promise...to come back and give thanks for all the trials and blessings that shaped the province throughout history. From the country's biggest income generator, the richest province down to its knees during the height of the sugar slump and disasters coming one after...then insurgency and poverty...but Negrenses never gave up...they believed that...HOPE SHINES IN NEGROS...Now Negros Occidental is rising once again as a properous province and it's giving all the gratitude to the heavens

First Posted 11:20:11 04/04/2011
MANILA---Vowing to put up more creditable performances this time, provincial teams University of St. La Salle-Bacolod and Southwestern U-Cebu begin their campaign today in the Shakey’s V-League Season 8 First Conference at the FilOil Flying V Arena in San Juan.
The St. La Salle Stingers face St. Benilde at 2 p.m. with all eyes on their American reinforcement Jayde Hair, before Southwestern clashes against a formidable Lyceum side in the 4 p.m. encounter.
Ateneo and Perpetual Help share the early lead in the eight-team tournament following straight-set victories over Far Eastern U and National U, respectively, on opening day last Sunday.
Hair, spotted by USLS coaches in Bacolod last year while she was on a Christian mission, banners the Stingers’ bid.
The 17-year-old hitter is a senior at Century High School in Pocatello, Idaho, where she helped her squad win the 4A state championship last year.
The Lady Blazers are out to atone for their string of poor form in the league.
They were winless in the second conference, but their fortunes could turn with the entry of guest players Angeli Araneta and Eula Ugalde.
The two will combine with Giza Yumang, Rossan Fajardo, Cindy Optana, Ren Agero and libero Rica Enclona.
Former USLS guest player Princess Pido will strut her wares for Southwestern, which will also have Kenyang Garces, Erika Verano, Marlyn Llagoso, Danika Gerdrauli and Danna Baguiro.

@dark spirit April 5th, 2011, 05:12 AM Ayala sees Negros as key growth area (http://www.visayandailystar.com/2011/April/04/businessnews1.htm)
Ayala Land launched North Point in Talisay, Negros Occidental Saturday.
North Point, which covers over 200 hectares of prime land, is the first fully-integrated and master-planned community in Negros Occidental and the first Ayala subdivision in Western Visayas.
Francis Monera, Ayala Land vice president and chief executive officer, said “We have launched North Point as a testament of Ayala Land’s commitment to enhance land in Negros and enrich the lives of the Negrenses who have warmly welcomed us to their community.”
This is Ayala Land’s contribution that will spur development in the region, he said, adding that they see Negros as a key growth area.
Ayala Senior vice president and head of VizMin, Emilio Tumbocon, said that essential to their expansion plans is creating integrated mixed-use communities and these developments incorporate commercial, residential, retail and office spaces which complement each other to provide a live-work-play convenience for the community.
Tumbocon said North Point also provides options for more affordable living with the entry of Avida and Amaia aside from the initial developments of the communities of Ayala North Point, Verdana Homes, Plantazionne and Verdana Homes Asyana.
For the office and commercial component, a Business Process Outsourcing campus starting with Ayala North Point Technohub, a PEZA-registered IT Park is also being developed, he said. A retail center will soon rise in the area to serve the needs of the growing community, he added.
Therese Borromeo, Ayala-Negros manager, said Avida will have 945 units once the whole phase is finished, while the Amaia will have 1,553 house and lot packages.
A unit in Avida will cost P1.6million and above, while the Amaia will cost over P600,000, she said.
Borromeo said North Point is just about 10 minutes away from the Bacolod-Silay airport in Silay City and about 5 kilometers from Bacolod City.*CGS

By Jerome S. Galunan Jr.

IT’S all systems go for the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) – Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Philippine National Games (P-Noy National Games) as the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) headed by chairman Ricardo ‘Richie’ Garcia, Gov. Alfredo Marańon and the mayors of the four partner-local government units (LGUs) signed the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) yesterday at the New Government Center in Bacolod City.
Aside from Garcia, other PSC officials joining in the MOA signing were Commissioners Joaquin ‘Chito’ Loyzaga and Jose Luis ‘Jolly’ Gomez. Affixing their signatures for their respective cities were Bacolod Mayor Evelio Leonardia, Bago Mayor Ramon Torres, Silay Mayor Jose Montelibano and Talisay Mayor Eric Saratan.
Also present during the undertaking were Bacolod Vice-Mayor Jude Thaddeus Sayson, Councilors Al Victor Espino and Dindo Ramos, and Provincial Sports Coordinator and Executive Assistant Angel Verdeflor.
Meanwhile, in a press conference held after the MOA signing, PSC chairman Garcia stressed that Negros Occidental was chosen as the venue because the province and the City of Bacolod has proven time and again that it can successfully host national and even international events without any problem at all.
Garcia also clarified that the events can be witnessed not only within the four co-host cities but also in other towns and cities, considering that the 120 kilometers cycling event will start from Kabankalan while the marathon will begin from Manapla town.
PSC Comm. Gomez explained that this weeklong event will be open to all Filipinos, whether playing in the Philippines or abroad. He also clarified that since this event will be participated by some national team players, it will serve as a venue to scout new talents to don the national colors, particularly for the Asian Games and the Olympics.
Gomez also said that those players who will have convincing performances will earn a slot in the national pool.
As far as the budget is concerned, Garcia disclosed that P30 million will be spent for this weeklong event to be participated by around 8,500 athletes from 17 regions across the country, including the national team mainstays.
A total of thirty-six events will be contested during the games. The events which will be played in Bacolod City are 5K and 10K marathon, athletics, badminton, beach volleyball, billiards, equestrian, fencing, gymnastics, judo, karatedo, lawn tennis, motorcycle sports, sailing, soft tennis, swimming, taekwondo, volleyball, wall climbing, weightlifting, wind surfing and wrestling.
Bago City will host canoe kayak, dragon boat, muay thai and wushu. Baseball, road cycling, futsal, football, penkak silat, softball and table tennis will be played in Talisay while Silay City will host archery, arnis, sepak takraw and triathlon.
However, Gomez said that baseball might be transferred to Silay, since it requires a wider playing area.
On the other hand, some crowd-drawing events like basketball, boxing, dancesports, chess, golf and shooting were not included after their National Sports Associations (NSA) disclosed that they have already set their respective calendars for this year. However, these NSAs promised to take part in the annual event next year, said Gomez.

‘Negros has a Lot to be Thankful for’
By Danny B. Dangcalan
Negros Occidental has a lot to be thankful for, including the high price of sugar in the world market, the progress and peace this year, and the good governance by local officials and President Aquino, former Senator Mar Roxas said yesterday.
http://www.ndb-online.com/files/lacastellana-apr0511.jpg
1st place: La Castellana's Bailes de Luces
Roxas, who was guest of honor and speaker at the opening of the 18th Panaad sa Negros Festival yesterday, said, "Negrenses have a lot of reasons to be thankful in this year of the Panaad Festival celebration. The Lord has showered a lot of blessings to this province."
Governor Alfredo Marańon Jr. said the Panaad Festival showcases the best abilities, best food and cuisines, and best traits of Negrenses, with their products being recognized in the world.
While celebrating the gains of the provincial government, Marańon, at the same time, reiterated his appeal to "our brothers and sisters in the mountains (rebels)" to unite and cooperate in the collective aim for progress.
The governor had issued the same call for rebels during his State of the Province Address last year.
"I would like to repeat, to our brothers and sisters in the mountains, my heart goes out to all of you for your suffering, hunger, cold, and sacrifices. Let us all unite and fight poverty. Your provincial government is open to hear your side. We are here to continue to listen to your concerns," he added.
Meanwhile, Roxas said the high price of sugar at P1,000 to P1,700 per kilo bag benefits Negrenses.
Negrenses should also be thankful and proud that the Panaad Stadium, which was the venue of yesterday’s opening ceremony, was the chosen venue for the Azkals-Mongolia football game last March because it is the only football field in the country that meets the international standard for the game.
Because of this, and the victory of the Philippine team, Negros Occidental had once again gained international exposure, Roxas added.
Even if there is civil unrest now in the Middle East, and with the threat on oil supply, Negros is developing its biofuels industry to make itself secure against these problems, he said.
He said Negros should also be thankful that there are many private individuals who have generous hearts to give back to the people.
He especially mentioned Jose Marquez Lim and his family, who donated 17,755 square meters (about 1.8 hectares) of his land to the Manapla municipality. The Deed of Donation was signed yesterday by Lim, Maranon, and Manapla Mayor Lourdes Escalante at the Sagay booth in Panaad Park.
Lim’s parcel of land that he donated is part of the 3-kilometer stretch that connects the Manapla highway to Punta Sabong where a port is being constructed.
The port will serve as an accessible gataway for tourists and products to northern Negros, as well as easier transport of goods and tourists to the nearby island-provinces, Roxas said.
He said that this year, Negrenses could also be thankful for having Aquino as President, because he is sincere in giving services to the Filipino people.
Aquino is not corrupt, and the people can sleep peacefully at night knowing that he will never steal from the public coffers, he said.
This means, the people’s taxes will be put to good use, and will translate to better public services, he said.
"I join the Negrosanon in celebrating the 18th Panaad Festival, and in thanking the Lord, our families, and our fellowmen for the many blessings we received. I hope that we all continue to unite and cooperate for the progress of our province and our country," Roxas said.
Crowd estimate at yesterday’s opening in the Panaad Stadium alone was placed at 5,000.
Senior Supt. Allan Guisihan, police provincial director, said about 600 policemen are deployed in Panaad Park and Stadium until April 9 to secure the area.
The 18th Panaad sa Negros Festival with the theme "Patubas sang Negrosanon, Manggad sang Nasyon" showcases the best of 13 cities and 19 towns in terms of history, arts and culture, tourism, commerce, trade and industry as well as products, sports, talents and skills. Dubbed the "Festival of all Festivals" the Panaad Festival also highlights the individual festivals of each local government unit.
Other activities lined up from April 4 to 9 are Festival Dance Competition, Pop Music Festival, Negrense/Ilonggo Folk Dance, Pop songwriting, Latin Dance Competition, Drum and Bugle Competition, and Composo, among others.*

@dark spirit April 5th, 2011, 05:39 AM BCC Has Grown to Be Layers: Mayor Leonardia (http://www.ndb-online.com/apr0511/negros-events-news/BCC+Has+Grown+to+Be+Layers-Mayor+Leonardia)
By Edith B. Colmo
Bacolod City College (BCC) has now grown to become layers. From 135 enrolment when it started in 1997, now it has grown to 731.
Thus said Mayor Evelio Leonardia, guest speaker at the 11th commencement exercises of BCC on Sunday at the Bacolod Arts Center (BAC). It was the 7th time that the mayor became the guest speaker of BCC graduation ceremony.
For eleven years of existence, Mayor Leonardia said, BCC has produced 4,600 graduates from a limited number of courses, including this year’s 731 graduates from 6 courses - BS Industrial Technology, BS Business Administration, Bachelor of Elem. Education, Bachelor of Secondary Education, BS Office Administration and Associate in Computer Technology.
The mayor was seemingly sentimental when he said, "Nothing pleases me than hearing the graduates whenever I go around, `Mayor, I am a BCC graduate.’ Can you imagine the impact in the lives of those who became successful that BCC has paved the way? It is BCC’s contribution to the community, that this administration has done. Like the Abada-Escay relocation site, the sanitary landfill, the slaughterhouse of Bacolod City, new government center and others that have created landmarks in the hearts of Bacolodnons."
"The establishment of BCC is not for quantity but quality. The reason why we became consistent being one of the top passers in the Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET)," the Mayor pointed out.
The mayor lauded the faculty and leadership of the school administration who are greatly responsible in making the BCC at the helm of success. "The graduates," he said, "have that sense of attachment and pride being from BCC. What BCC had implanted in you, you should be proud that you are from BCC."
The mayor also assured the parents that there will be no tuition fee increase in his administration. In other schools, computer engineering course costs P706.95 per unit.
This means the parents need to allot P30,000.00 to P50,000.00 per semester for the tuition fee. But at BCC, the total tuition fee for 28 units all courses and miscellaneous fee for one semester is only P1,065.00.
The mayor received a standing ovation when he announced that starting this year, there will be additional 3-storey building with 36 classrooms back to back to be constructed at the main campus in Brgy. Taculing, Bacolod City.*

By Cyrus M. Garde
The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) headed by chairman Negrense Richie Garcia, Governor Alfredo G. Marańon, Jr. and Bacolod City Mayor Evelio R. Leonardia had signed up a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) yesterday along with other local chief executive to formalize the staging of this year’s Philippine National Games (PNG) slated on May 22-29, 2011 in Negros Occidental.
Others in attendance were PSC commissioners Atty. Jose Luis (Jolly) Gomez and Chito Loyzaga, Silay City Mayor Oti Montelibano, Talisay City Mayor Dr. Eric Saratan and Bago City Mayor Ramon Torres.
The PSC will provide media mileage starting April 4 to May 30, 2011 and will also allocate funds for the games, handle technical requirements for the games and shoulder the transportation and accommodation of expenses of VIPs, officiating officials and other officials coming from Manila.
The PSC earmarked P30 million for staging the event, P15-M of which goes to the host cities for providing venues and sports facilities, necessary security personnel, form local counterpart working committees, take care of operation and management billeting centers, medical personnel on 24-hour basis for the duration of the games.
More than 8,500 athletes are expected to converge in Bacolod City and other venues in Negros Occidental participating in 36 sports disciplines, Garcia said, adding that all facilities for the big event like PNG are all accessible when asked why PSC favors Bacolod City and Negros Occidental.
This PNG will also serve as qualifying event in the national pool, he adds.
Bacolod City will host 21 events in separate venues with Panaad Sports Complex as the center; Talisay City with 7 events and Bago City and Silay City with 4 events each.*

USLS beat CPU in SGVL
University of St. La Salle-Integrated School opened its bid for the crown by thrashing Central Philippine University in three straight sets, 25-19, 25-21, 25-9, and Pajo National High School (Cebu), 25-18, 25-14, 25-19, in the opening day of the Shakey’s Tournament of Champions at the USLS College Covered Court yesterday.
Pajo absorbed the loss in the hands of host USLS after registering a win against New Ormoc High School (Leyte), 25-4, 25-19, 25-17.
Hope Christian School (Manila) turned back Davao National High School, 25-23, 25-22, 25-18, also to firm up its campaign in the competition.
During the opening ceremonies, PSC Commissioner Chito Loyzaga stressed the importance of developing new talents in sports, particularly in volleyball.
He also reminded the players that getting into the final stage of the tournament is already a victory for them, regardless of who will end up with the championship trophy.
Today’s schedule will feature Hope Christian School against CPU in the first game at 9:30 a.m., followed by the match-up between USLS and New Ormoc High School at 11 a.m.
In the afternoon, DNHS will try to bounce back from its initial setback, hoping to get past CPU in the 2 p.m. game, while Hope will tacked PNHS for its third assignment in the tournament.*NAB

MANILA, Philippines - University of St. La Salle-Bacolod turned back College of St. Benilde in a marathon two-hour duel, hacking out a come-from-behind 25-21, 25-27, 18-25, 25-17, 15-11 victory yesterday in the Shakey’s V-League first conference at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan City.
The Bacolod-based tossers outhit the Lady Blazers in a tight fifth-set battle that featured nine deadlocks, taking four straight points, including a drop shot by American reinforcement Jayde Hair for a 13-9 USLS lead.
The Lady Blazers scored back-to-back points from a Charmaine Moralde miscue to close within two but former national youth standout Patty Orendain knocked the last two of her 22-hit output to deliver the win for the Visayan squad.
“They failed to overcome the jitters and made too many service errors and defensive lapses,” said USLS assistant coach Carl Barredo in Filipino. “But I hope they will settle down with the game and improve in our next matches.”
The scrambling win gave USLS a share of the lead with opening day winners Ateneo and University of Perpetual Help in the eighth season of the annual league sponsored by Shakey’s and backed by Accel (official outfitter) and Mikasa (official ball).
Skipper Kay Aplasca and Charmaine Moralde came up with 17 and 13 points, respectively, while combining for 31 excellent digs for the Lady Stingers, who are out to improve their sixth place finish last year.
Lyceum fought back from a first-set loss as it swept the next three, foiling CESAFI champion Southwestern University, , 21-25, 27-25, 25-16, 25-15, in the second game.
Joy Cases made 20 kills while guest players Mary Jean Balse, a former two-time MVP, and Dahlia Cruz combined for 31 points to help power the Lady Pirates to a share of the lead.
Rapril Aguilar paced SWU with 17 hits while Danike Gendrauli added 15 points.
Hair, 17, made a good account of herself by chipping in 10 points, including two blocks, while April Hingpit, Floradele Dolar, Royce Quijano and June Denila combined for 24 points.
“She’s still trying to feel his way but I’m satisfied with her game,” said Barredo of Hair, a former standout of the Century High School in Idaho.
St. Benilde moved a set away from clinching the match after a scrambling second set win and a convincing third set romp. But the Lady Blazers failed to neutralize the Lady Stingers’ strong finishing kick.

BCC has biggest number
of graduates this year
BACOLOD City — Over 800 students graduated from different courses at the Bacolod City College (BCC).
BCC’s Commencement Exercise was held at the Bacolod Arts Center at the Bacolod City National High School compound recently.
So far, this year’s number of graduates — and audience — is the biggest in the history of the college.
In his speech, Mayor Evelio Leonardia thanked the parents and students for their trust to study in BCC, his brainchild.
Leonardia enjoined the students to be proud of their humble Alma Mater as BCC has come at par and even better than some private educational institutions.
The mayor cited the laurels BCC earned like its passing rate in the Licensure Exam for Teachers, and the Information Technology Olympics.
BCC will maintain the P30-per-unit tuition fee, the same rate as when it started in 1997.
Leonardia said this will remain status quo for as long as he is mayor of Bacolod City.
He also assured that there will be a new BCC building to rise within the last stretch of his administration.
Leonardia acknowledged the presence of the PEACE CORPS in BCC.
He said Iloilo City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog is setting up a public college patterned after the Bacolod City College, but with a higher tuition fee of P100 per unit.
The mayor asked the graduates to try to succeed since with their success, BCC also succeeds.
The graduates were also urged to be prime movers in making Bacolod an even more successful city. (EAD/PIA6/PN)
