TALE OF 3 CITIES

* Bago City
* Silay City
* San Carlos City

Bago City

Bago was founded by an Augustinian priest, Fr. Geronimo Marin on June 24, 1575, the feast day of St. John the Baptist. Spanish Historian Diego de Povedano wrote that the community was named after a large tree called “Bago” under which a native prince Mapagic died. Another version, however, noted that the name came from the shrub, bago-bago that grew abundantly in the riverbanks. Around the 17th and 18th Centuries, settlers from Molo, Iloilo formed a little village at the mouth of Bago River, presently a rich source of sand and gravel. The village grew into a large settlement prompting its elders to pass a petition for its conversion into a town or pueblo, which was eventually granted in 1800.

Bago became a city on February 19, 1966 by virtue of Republic Act No. 4382 with then Mayor Manuel Y. Torres as first city mayor, holding over from his election in 1959.

Bago City is a top rice producer in the province and is home to industries like the Maao Sugar Central, Viva Mineral water bottling plant, Ginebra San Miguel distilled products and the Alter Trade muscovado mill, among others. It is host to the 40 to 80 megawatts capacity PNOC-EDC’s Northern Negros Geothermal Project that will be commissioned in early 2007.

Bago City marks its annual Fiesta on November (Cinco de Noviembre) with a booming “PARADA SANG MGA CAŃON”. Among its leading landmarks today are its Cinco de Noviembre Monument, featuring its favorite son and foremost revolutionary hero, General Juan Araneta mounting a horse, the Manuel Y. Torres Memorial Coliseum and Cultural Center, Balay Tan Juan Museum, Rafael Salas Park & Nature Center, Buenos Aires Mountain Resort and several beach resorts. Two other tourism-oriented festival in Bago are the BABAYLAN DANCE DRAMA on February 14 and SAN JUAN DE BAUTISTA FLUVIAL PROCESSION AT BAGO RIVER on June 24.*

Silay City

Founded in 1970, Silay evolved from being an old Spanish settlement. Migrant families from Iloilo gave vigor to Silay, making it an important commercial and agriculture settlement during the Spanish era. In 1846, cultivation of sugarcane led by Yves Leopold Germain Gaston made the town prosperous. November 5, 1898 plated a significant role in Silay’s history. The Silaynons attacked the Spanish garrison and made the Spaniards surrender peacefully. It was a bloodless revolution. The Philippine flag was raised for the first time at the public plaza. Silay was famous for its artists and cultural shows. It became the “Paris of Negros”. Kahirup Theater was the center of these activities. Jose “Pitong” Ledesma, a Silaynon pianist, conductor and philantrophist was one of those responsible for inviting operatta and zarzuela performers from Europe. Silay is the second town in Negros Occidental to become a city on June 12, 1957. Silay was famous for its artists and cultural shows.

Silay is known as the “seat of arts, culture and ecotourism” and is recognized by the Department of Tourism as one of the top tourist destinations in the Philippines.

It is the site of an airport of international standard that is now being constructed and will be operational by 2007.*

San Carlos City
The original name of San Carlos City was “Nabing-kalan”, which referred to the Negrito settlement of inhabitants from towns of the Western Coast of Cebu Island who came to Negros. The settlers were led by an enterprising Cebuano from Badian, Carlos Apurado, who developed the area into a thriving Christian village with the help of his fellow pioneers.

“Nabingkalan” is also derived from the name of “Nabingka”, a beautiful princess who ruled the territory for many years that when she died, the inhabitants of this Negrito region mourned the death of their beautiful princess for two years. In order to perpetuate her soul, the people gave the name of “Nabingkalan” to the place where their beautiful princess ruled for a long period.

In 1856, the first Politico Military Governor of Negros Island, Don Emilio Saravia, renamed the place “San Carlos” and established it as a “pueblo”. Through the years, the place prospered but the village lost its “pueblo” status in 1890 when Negros Island was divided into two provinces Occidental and Oriental Negros. San Carlos was recorded as an “arrabal” or barrio of Calatrava, then known as “Hilub-ang.” In January 1892, the Bishop of the Diocese of Jaro in Iloilo appointed a recollect as the first parish priest of San Carlos and three years later, the place regained its momentum for progress with 16 well-equipped “haciendas” in operation.

In 1898, San Carlos acquired its township status when Gen. Juan Araneta of the Revolutionary Negros Republic offically proclaimed it as a municipality. This was confirmed by the American Military Administration in 1901.

Five years later, in 1906, a constraint on the new administration form of local government implemented by the American Administration made Calatrava an “arrabal” or barrio of San Carlos.

San Carlos became a city on July 1, 1960. Each year, the city celebrates the Pintaflores festival on November 3-5 that culminates in a fascinating streetdancing competition participated in by floral-painted dancers donned in colorful, ethnic-inspired constumes.*

^^ok man lang na migo bisan gamay lang pero makawiwili man maglagaw-lagaw...hehehehe. the good thing is, there's still more room for expansion. and that's we've got to watch out.

"Ay kagamay sang inyo SM"......I heard that all over and over....haaaay.....but wala na ko ga reklamo......its not the size...its the uniqueness of SM City Bacolod...at least may SM. Ambiance and class makes SM City Bacolod at par with newer and classy SM Malls in the country.

SIPALAY CITY
Jewel of Negros FEATURES

An emerging travel destination not only in the region but also in the entire country is the southern Negros City of Sipalay.

Located 175 kms. South of Bacolod, Sipalay offers scenic sights of nature – from white-sand coasts to hills and trails for trekkers, bikers and spelunkers.

Sea lovers has a choice of resorts and places that provide visitors, particular from other countries, with memorable rural experiences. They can check out Campomanes Bay, which has a coral garden. Or they can go to Punta Ballo or Langub, which have white sand beaches. Getting to be a popular destination is Takatuka, where a visitor’s countryside adventure is enhanced by excellent food and uniquely-designed and decorated bungalows. Takatuka describes itself as “the Philippines Most Caribbean Beach’, which reflects its vibrant ambience.

Foreign visitors enjoy the exploration of 42 dive sites in Sipalay, which offer glimpses of history, among them three ship wreck areas.

Because of the increasing interest in Sipalay as a tourist destination, the industry is spawning the increase in hostel and resort facilities with the city now having more than a dozen establishments that offer overnight accommodation.

Sipalay has started to sparkle in the tourism map as the ‘Jewel of the Sugar Island.’

Those interested in Sipalay tourism-related information may contact the City Tourism Information Center (0918-930-1882, or sipalaycity@yahoo.com). Or check out the city website, www.sipalaycity.gov.ph

A new take on chicken inasal
11/17/08
Posted under business ideas, success stories

How do you make yourself unique in a market that seems saturated? Simple. Offer something the market does not have yet – a blue ocean strategy.

Such was the business model of Treena Cueva-Tecson when she thought about what to do after she gave up her full-time marketing and PR career two years ago to be a wife and mom.

Born and raised in Bacolod, Treena noted that the chicken inasal sold in Manila does not taste the way it should. “The inasal in Manila are sweet, dry, and not cooked well. I know how inasal should taste like. Ilonggos would really know the authentic taste of inasal,” says Treena. “And the inasal places in Manila sell inasal by the stick (ex.: paa, pecho). No one is selling whole chicken inasal.”

Armed with her mom’s recipe, P250,000 in capital, and husband Adrian’s all-out support, Treena worked out the details of Tambokikoy’s—her new inasal business. Tambokikoy is the Ilonggo word for chubby. Treena envisioned it as a take-out place that would sell authentic-tasting whole chicken inasal.

Tambokikoy’s chicken inasal is cooked rotisserie-style over charcoal—not electric grill—and chopped two minutes after it is done cooking. “In that way, the juice goes back; it doesn’t dry out,” says Treena.

Her pricing strategy is to offer the food items at a price lower than others do. “I want a lot of people to try our inasal, so we made it affordable. It’s a healthier alternative to fried chicken and fried pork chop. Even my daughter Hailey eats it,” adds Treena. Whole chicken is only P199. Half chicken is P100. A quarter chicken with garlic rice goes for P75 (fast-food places offer a small one-piece chicken and rice at a price higher than that). And pork chop with garlic rice is P65.

And the market response has been very good. Since Tambokikoy’s started operations this September 1, office people and families have been dropping by to order take out from lunch time until dinner time seven days a week (it’s open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.). It helps that Tambokikoy’s is in a very good location right across the Mandaluyong City Hall on Maysilo Circle, the crossroad to San Juan, Mandaluyong, Makati, and Manila.

“I gauge my success with the people who come by,” says Treena. “They’re no longer friends and family. They have heard about Tambokikoy’s from others through word of mouth and from our friends in radio and magazines.”

By December, Treena is expecting to hit her return on investment. Franchising inquiries have already started to come in even as Treena says she is not yet ready to franchise.

“One of my regular customers said I got the 3Ms: Mabilis, Masarap, at Mura. Fast, Delicious and Affordable. Our satisfaction is in seeing people enjoy our chicken inasal and come back,” says Treena.

^^Lain gid ya ang authentic Bacolod Chicken Inasal!:nuts:
Good luck sa expansion!

Negrense foods
By Ver F. Pacete

"MEET Amanda Nachtwey at the airport for me. Tell her I am still in Singapore. She's a writer - educator from Bowie, Maryland. She will visit Negros Occidental to taste what we eat. She will write a book about Negrense gustatory delights."

This was the assignment given to me by my best friend Diana. Of course, I can't say no to her. She is my "girl Friday" in Iloilo every time I have my Panay expedition. My answer to her emphatic request was yes.

Friday evening. Last PAL (Philippine Airlines) flight from Manila. Of course, I was there at the Airport Tourism Information Section as early as 5:30PM. Tourism staff "potentate", Maymay Nene, was in her black theatrical attire. She greeted me, "Hi, Tito Ver!" Her sheepish smile followed.

PAL passengers started to approach the arrival gate towards the waiting vehicles at the parking area. I spotted three American ladies but they were too young to be seasoned writers. I was expecting for a 30- to 40-year-old Lady Thomasite.

Later, I saw a five-seven beauty who could be mistaken as a Ralph Lauren fashion model. Her eyes were immensely expressive. (Just like a Gothic Castle lady.) It was an uneasy meeting but we manage to know each other. She was only 26 years old.

We had Pinoy dinner in Balaring (Tama Plaza) - buttered squid, gambas, sinigang-lison, grilled tilapia, and tangigue-kinilaw. She had her notes open and started to scribble what she got from the kitchen staff and the waitresses.

She stayed at Planta (the newest hotel in town). Our breakfast was in Bago City. Tita Consing prepared her finest recipes - bamboo shoot achara, grilled pantat, sara-sara tea, organic rice (tapol) and kuakoy-ubas-pilipig as dessert.

Tonio was generously humble. He allowed us to use his car (a seven-month-old Ford Everest). We dropped by at Hinigaran to taste the LGU's specialty, bibingka. Amanda described it as heavenly. I invited her to taste talaba but she graciously refused my offer.

It was a long travel to Sipalay but the road scenario was exciting. Amanda was thrilled to see sugarcane fields, carabaos on parade along the highway, women washing clothes by the river, people sitting on the bridge entrance doing nothing but mistaken by Amanda as a welcome group. The western view revealing our glittering sea depicted a scenario as if the hill is kissing the sea...very romantic. Amanda was reminded of Antibes in France.

My friend Aaron hosted us in Sipalay. Aaron's mother invited our American guest to do island hopping. She wanted it but there was no more time. Aaron's Tita Grizelle prepared the Sipalay's best harvest from the sea - tuna (bantalaan), manumbok, lison, badlon, tangigue, lapu-lapu. Grizelle was once a chef in a Cebu restaurant.

The preparation for dinner was in a beach house owned by Aaron's uncle. We have the haranistas and their kundiman. Bamboo torches were aligned at the fence as if waiting for King Arthur to come. Young bukos were split. The juice was hauntingly sweet; the meat was cotton-soft. For an American, this was something worth writing.

At the corner, there was a palm kiosk where expert grillers were grilling tuna belly, squid, lukon, bangus and shells. In a nearby tolda (tent made of coco leaves), there was a long table loaded with sweet and sour lapu-lapu, sizzling manumbok, lison bola-bola, hot tangigue, maya-maya estofado, steamed shrimps and seaweeds kinilaw. The shoot took 30 minutes. The interview was longer, but dinner was the longest. The last quarter moon was the brightest lantern. Aaron's family members took time in describing healthy foods from the ocean.

It was almost midnight when Amanda requested me to accompany her for a 30-minute swim. Before I could refuse, she was already in her white two-piece suit which reminded me of double Oscar winner Hillary Swank in a Vanity Fair cover wearing a bikini by La Perla Mare. What came next was a leap to fantasy.

We left Sipalay at 4 a.m. Next destination: Escalante City. Along the way, I unloaded a box of Silay piaya I bought from Jessica Go. We had coffee in Kabankalan. We tried Capulso puto in Manapla - the one with cheese but Amanda preferred the dahon-saging puto. She said, "I am a decider, and I decide what is best!"

When we reached Escalante, I brought her to the "danggit factory". The patadyong lady explained how to split a danggit. It is washed with seawater and dried on a bamboo mat. Dried danggits are of two kinds: boneless, the other one... with bones.

Our late breakfast was fried danggit pinakas with "sinamak" as "sawsaan". It was smashing hot and Amanda showed her reddening lips as if colored by Revlon lipstick.

On the way back to Silay, our conversation was still centered on Pinoy kitchen. I told her that when she comes back, my auntie will cook monggo-langka-baboy ginat-an, jackfruit ensalada, pako-pako pickles, dried gumaa with kolitis and kamanse.

Of course, we still have much to offer - pinangat, batchoy, molo, bendunggado, sarciado atay, kilawin, sisig and our baked angel wing. Amanda's notebook was full. Her camera was loaded with kaleidoscopic pictures ranging from foods to community activities. She looked at me while we are nearing the airport and said: "You're an amazing travel companion. I'll spread the word. Negros is great!"

Negrense foods (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/bacolod/negrense-foods)

There's something about scary (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/bacolod/theres-something-about-scary)

MY FIRST brush with the supernatural came when I was a very young girl. It was a rainy afternoon. A lazy one, too, as it was a weekend so Mama thought it would be a perfect time for a cuddle. Daddy entered the master's bedroom first followed by Mama while I was at the end of the short line.
When I looked back, I saw that the santol-wood Sacred Heart of Jesus statue was quite not where it should be. In fact, it was moving...towards me! Que horror! Was I just imagining things?

Until I became an adult, I dismissed memories of that cozy afternoon as the result of a tot's overactive imagination. Still, the memory remains vivid - a cold drizzle that deserved a cuddle in my parents' bed, the fright I felt as I looked at the statue that was now almost halfway down the hall, and even the urgent push I gave my mother to hurry her up. Of course, present-day reports on moving statues only confirm that what I saw was the real thing.
Many strange things in our universe tell us that we are not alone. Philippine folklore reflects the fullness of our culture and our belief in the amazing mysteries and forces of our earth - from dwarves to witches to fortunetellers to kapres.

We even share with our Asian brothers the misfortune that befalls our men - the dreaded and deadly bangungot, which Western men do not experience.
Speaking of dwarves, one maid of ours left quickly because she saw little men in their cute dwarf costumes sitting on a mango tree limb in our backyard.

She described them in colorful garb complete with pointy caps - exactly how picture books would illustrate them. Then, there's this beautiful office building built in the 1850s in Iloilo when Americans were still running it.

From the upstairs manager's residence, the American wife of the manager went berserk because she saw the glowing tip of a kapre's cigar outside the window where a balete tree was and still is. She'd also catch glimpses of his hairy legs dangling from one of the branches.

When I dropped by that office this year to tour the house, I could see how old it really was. I looked up and saw the ceiling fan notorious for sightings of dwarves enjoying a merry-go-round on its blades.

The current manager's wife confirmed there truly are mysterious goings-on in their quarters and pointed out that it's in the huge airy bathroom where the main events usually take place. The office name is my secret but I'll give you a clue: it's along the muelle.

Dad's old bulding in Luzuriaga was a perfect venue for strange happenings. We have lived there before moving to our present residence. A manughimalad told Daddy that a "river" runs through our kitchen and that we have unseen residents sharing the building with us. Perhaps that explains why some maids could hear the sound of boats blowing their whistles. Since my room was far from the maids' quarters, I don't really remember hearing whistles.

A maid, though, who the underground denizens didn't get along with, woke up one time with strange markings on her face. Dad said they just got even with her after she cursed them and threw salt at them. Since Daddy was a quiet man and never one to curse, the dwarves took a liking to him and would occasionally and playfully tickle his ear when he took his naps. Sometimes, they'd whistle to him and he'd whistle back. Oh, Daddy's hidden talent...

In our present house, mysteries would occur, too. We would hear our names called out by beings mimicking other household members' voices. So, our maid would come running and asking what we need but we'd, of course, tell her there was nothing.

But they can't fool us most of the time because we'd know which member is out that time so we don't answer if we hear our names called in the absent member's voice. (Akala niyo ha!)

My maid and I heard three knocks on the front door at night on two occasions. Of course, there wouldn't be anybody on the other side. I also caught my favorite dog turning his head from left to right as if following the movement of someone passing by from the kitchen to the dining room to my mother's bedroom. The master's bedroom has had things going on there, too, but I don't have the luxury of space now.

There used to be a weekend home where our house stands now and when we abandoned it for a while, a neighbor saw on one clear moonlight night the figure of a lady in a white gown. Aw, I'm disappointed. How come I never saw her even though I'd get out of the house to check on a new puppy at 2 am! Perhaps, her unearthly beauty pales compared with my earthly one.

Isn't our world bee-you-ti-ful? And I mean beautiful. I am always filled with wonderment when I read or hear stories of the unknown. I avoid watching horror movies for I believe in the Christian principle to always think of what is noble and pure and good, etc. And there's "Garbage in, garbage out" to remember also. Still, I had always had this fascination with what I cannot see and I think this is not unique because so many people do share my fascination or what else could explain horror movies that break box office records. The presence of other beings only confirms that we do not own the earth and we have to take seriously our roles as mere stewards. Booo!!!

Oh, by the way, for all the suki of Waxworks, the annual Halloween live exhibit event usually held at The Negros Museum, Waxworks IV: Sirum-Sirum will be staged from October 24-31, 2008 at 6-10 pm. This time, Waxworks uncovers seven new spine chilling and skin-crawling chamber outposts embracing the depths of our very own Visayan folklore.

According to Waxworks marketing and promotions manager, a story-teller-tour guide will accompany you through the Ranig-Ranig, Tubnon, Idalmunon, Lupan-on, Kahanginan, Ibabawnon, and Langitnon chambers. Here, supernatural beings, dark spirits, malevolent souls, and treacherous creatures will be revealed along with scary visuals, eerie music, frightening effects, creepy tour-storytelling, and haunting interactive performance. Mwahahahahaha!!!

Tickets are at P20 for children/students and P30 for adults. This is one cheap thrill. Boooo!!!

Charcoal paintings exhibit set Dec. 9 (http://www.visayandailystar.com/2008/December/03/people.htm)

The Museo Negrense de La Salle will present the charcoal paintings of Jennifer Portes Yulo in a debut exhibit called, “Black and White”, which will open on December 9, at the University of St. La Salle museum, in Bacolod City, a press release from organizers said.

Yulo, a 1997 La Salle Mass Communication graduate was encouraged and inspired by a childhood friend, Jose Paolo Villaluna, now a Manila-based artist and independent film director, to pursue painting.

Learning the basics from a summer art workshop with local artist Jun Mendoza in 1995, she was mostly self-taught and focused on developing her interest in pencil sketches of portraits, the press release said.

Now a working mother, Yulo continued her art, concentrating on portraits of women in the nude.

The exhibit will be opened to the public starting Dec. 10, from 8 a.m. to 12 noon, and 1:30 to 5:30 p.m., Mondays through Fridays, until Dec. 19, the press release added.*
