^^I beleive pancake house didn't do well sa Lilo when it was opened in SM, I hope kung ma dayun gin man sila open sa lacson ma click sa mga taga Negros Occ, nami tuod ila nga pancakes but sometime people now are practical naga pangita barato thats why ang 888 gina bahaan permi sang tawo.

there is a big reason why pancake isn ot doing well in Iloilo. Yes their pancakes are ok but other items in their menu, pastas particularly, is priced double/triple than their worth. Ok lang expensive tani pero basta namit man bala:|

Bacolod PESO bares
more overseas jobs

The Public Employment Service Office in Bacolod City will have a series of jobs fairs starting today until June 17, at the PESO office at the 2nd floor of the old Bacolod City Hall, PESO manager Moises dela Cruz said yesterday.

MY International will be at the office today and it is looking for domestic helpers to work in Taiwan, dela Cruz said. Qualified applicants will have free passport processing and medical examination. The placement fee will be paid in salary deductions, he added.

Greenfields Agency is looking for domestic helpers and nurses for the Middle East and their scheduled screening and interview will be on June 13 to 15. The Asamco Arabia will have its employer’s interview starting June 13.

Asamco Arabia needs aluminum installers and fabricators, planning and QA/QC engineers, contract and structural engineers, cost controllers, autocad operators, electricians, and mechanical technicians, dela Cruz said.

On June 14 to 15, Blazing Star will have its employer’s interview at the MassKara Hall of the New Government Center. They are looking for service crews for Mc Donalds-Kuwait while on June 17, Aqua-Gem International Manpower will be in PESO.

Aqua-Gen needs 300 domestic helpers for Hongkong aged 23 to 40 years old. The expected salary is $3,580 Hongkong dollars with two years contract, he also said.

Meanwhile, Cliques Security Agency, a local agency, is looking for security guards. Their scheduled screening is on June 16 to 17.

Applicants may submit their resumé, 2x2 pictures, school credentials, employment certificates, Professional Regulation Commission licenses (for professionals), training certificates, National Bureau of Investigation clearance, and copy of passport.*LTG

the a/c's we're part of the package if you're gonna purchased a unit, it was probably a marketing strategy to attract buyers but it doen't mean that it's taken because I personally talked to the salesperson and most of the units are available. I might be wrong but that's the info that I got.

one of the little things in sports.....

Bacoleño joins Phoenix tablenet in July

VETERAN paddler and former national team standout Johnard Baldonado from Bacolod City is set to join the 2011 AZ Sizzler Open scheduled July 16, 2011 in Phoenix, Arizona, USA.

Baldonado told Sun.Star-Bacolod that, though this event is not a major tournament, it will be part of his preparation for a bigger competition in December.

“This is not a major tournament but it will help me prepare to defend my Hardbat Championships U.S. Table Tennis 2010 title on December in Virginia Beach,” he said.

The erstwhile 4th District Table Tennis Sports Coordinator and Bacolod Christian College of Negros Chief Administrative Officer has continuously put the Philippines in the sports roadmap.

Last December 2010, Baldonado won the Hardbat Championships U.S. Table Tennis 2010 held in Las Vegas Convention Center on December 14-18, 2010.

Baldonado defeated Noel Huermann in the finals, 19-21, 21-15, 21-18, 21-13. He also outplayed 2009 defending champion Carlos Ko in the semi-finals, 21-16, 21-15, 21-19.

Huermann is the son of German player Franz-Josef Hardbat Huermann who won the title in 1977.

The tournament was contested by 299 players featuring three times champion Trevor Runyan, who bowed to Huermann during the semis. (JSG)

Melligen to fight Hernandez in July
Wednesday, June 8, 2011

ALA Boxing welterweight standout Bacoleño Mark "Mighty" Mark Melligen (21-2-0, 14 KOs) will again be tested as he is scheduled to fight Mexican Freddy Hernandez (29-2-0, 20KOs) in a welterweight match-up on July 1, 2011 in San Antonio, Texas.

This was confirmed Tuesday by ALA Promotions media relations officer Chad Cañares.

Hernandez stepped in for Roberto Garcia, who pulled out from the clash. Hernandez's most recent fight is a 1st round loss to Andre Berto back in November 2010.

The 25-year-old Melligen is coming off an impressive unanimous decision victory against Gabriel Martinez of Mexico in the undercard of the Fernando Montiel-Nonito Donaire fight back in February of this year.

Melligen, who is considered as a fighter on the rise, has shown lots of improvements with five straight victories since his November 2009 defeat to Michel Rosales.

The Bacoleño slugger spends his rigorous training duties at the Floyd Mayweather's gym in Las Vegas and stays in shape with light training at ALA gym while in Cebu.

Meanwhile, Melligen’s younger brother, Rey, will be up against Jesson "TI Yamagata Inso" Inso in a non-title fight on June 11 for the Pinoy Pride 6 at the Cebu Waterfront Hotel and Casino Lahug, Cebu City.

The Melligen-Inso clash is an undercard to the Rey ‘Boom Boom’ Bautista-Heriberto ‘Cuate’ Ruiz rematch.

well he made good money with his first pet project country homes and sold out the units, so with it's success I hope he does well with hi residence, I believe make or break ni sya nga project because it will open up the condo trend and big realtors the likes of sm, mw, Ayala will plan to build condos in our city not only bpo buildings.

New generation buyers are now very selective in terms of building aesthetics thats why quality should not be compromised here or else it will suffer the same fate as the Horizon Tower .

Ang paglantaw ko sa ina nga lugar, pwede na mangin equivalent ka Alabang Business District kay ang Alabang bus transit area to the South sang Metro Manila plus leisure/financial center. True enough, bus and transpo hub ma na da with the presence of Bacolod North Terminal and the so-called international standard bus terminal ka Ceres.

Kung indi makuha ka Ayala ang likod ka Capitol, dira na lang sila tani macapitalize para sa ila Ayala Mall. Himuon na nila tani business and leisure center (like Madrigal Business Park and/or half of Alabang Business District) kag ang sa Ayala North Point devoted to technology, educational and residential hubs (like Ayala Alabang Village and/or the other half of Alabang Business District). With that idea, that area na boundary sang Bacolod kag Talisay can really have the potential to become the Alabang or Ayala Center even of Bacolod City.

Medyo ka both grandiose or what some might even call dreamy but I am just looking ahead after 5, 10 and even 25 years ahead. Nothing is impossible in Metropolitan Bacolod. City of surprises man kita ayhan diba? :D

This is the work of my imaginative mind of course but look at that. Look at how close the Uniwide, Ayala, Bacolod North Terminal and Ceres North properties are. Look at the red border areas... that's preposterously so close!

The border in white is my idea of an "Ayala Center of Bacolod" which includes future growth areas as well. Not impossible isn't it? Even if it may not be as wide as my white border and only merges minimally on points of intersection, still that's a wide area.

Weird, pure imagination or day dreaming to some but to me, thats not a day-dream 5, 10 or even 25 years from now. Ayala can possibly have NOTHING TO LOSE even if the Capitol property may not go to them. What's your thought on these guys?

Follow up ko lang sa photo ko sa babaw. This is the area of the existing Alabang Growth Area.

With ginormous size sang Alabang, indi impossible ang gina project ko na growth area dira sa Bacolod - Talisay boundary IF Ayala will buy the Uniwide Property.

Metro Bacolod still have a lot of Room for Improvement. Given the Current State, it is always Possible for Ayala to Draw oppurtunities, wherever they plan to Develop.

Bacolod was able to keep up with the demands. So far. I hope it is maintained.

Indi guid na impossible migs kay given the profitability of the projects in Metro Bacolod sang Ayala. I just hope Ayala sees what I see so that can happen soon enough. ‘Enforce smoking ban in government offices’
Friday, June 10, 2011

BACOLOD City Councilor Em L. Ang urged the different offices of the Local Government of Bacolod, through the Office of the City Mayor, to observe the Civil Service Memorandum Circular 17, Series of 2009, which prohibits smoking in government offices and premises.

The said policy prohibits smoking in all government premises except for open spaces designated as smoking areas.

This is to ensure a healthy and productive workforce, Ang said.

Said regulation also seeks to encourage people to quit smoking for health reasons and to protect others from exposure to second-hand smoke.

Ang said that in order to maintain a smoke-free environment in government offices and instill discipline among government employees, the different offices of the Local Government of Bacolod City should strictly observe the regulation.

Visitors and other persons transacting in the local government offices, including the New Government Center, shall also observe the “no smoking policy.” (Carla N. Canet)

Guv pushes
Negros-Iloilo bridge plan
BY CARLA GOMEZ

Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. yesterday said he is pushing for the construction of a bridge that will connect Negros Occidental to Iloilo and has included it in the agenda of the next Western Visayas Regional Development Council meeting on June 30.

The governor said he is asking the RDC to request the Japan International Cooperation Agency to conduct a project study for the construction of a bridge that will connect Barangay Tomongtong, EB Magalona in Negros Occidental to Banate town in Iloilo City.

The study is needed to proceed with the project, he said.

EB Magalona Mayor David Lacson said he welcomes the move of the governor because the bridge will be a big boost to his town and to theprovince.

A P14.5 kilometer bridge from Tomongtong to Banate is feasible because it will pass over not too deep waters, he added.

Mayor Ronald Golez of Dumangas,Iloilo, who visited EB Magalona yesterday also said the bridge will boost the economy of booth provinces.

The proposed Panay-Guimaras bridge is already covered bythe Regional Development Investment Program for 2011-2016 with a P48 billion budget.*CPG

SRA wants tax slapped
on Coke, ruling out soon
BY CARLA GOMEZ

Sugar Regulatory Administration chief Ma. Regina Bautista-Martin yesterday said Coca-Cola’s premix sugar has been classified as “C” or reserve sugar to prevent its release domestically while a hearing is being conducted by the Bureau of Customs on its status.

Coca-Cola’s premix imports since January have reached 24,000 metric tons that on testing were found to be more than 99.5 percent sugar with the remaining amount being flavoring and or coloring, SRA findings show.

The SRA wants Customs to classify the Coke premix imports as sugar that should be subjected to a 38 percent tariff, and not as premixes that can enter the country at zero tariff, Martin said.

SRA and Confederation of Sugar Producers Association representatives have been attending the Customs hearings and its ruling on whether there is enough basis to slap a 38 percent tariff on the Coca-Cola imports is expected next week, she said.

She said the SRA and Customs, meanwhile, are keeping watch on the premixes and any group who wishes to join the monitoring is welcome to do so.

Martin said the SRA does not have the power to prevent the entry of premixes into the country but it can act on its classification and seek Customs action when finds that what is declared as premix is actually sugar.

Meanwhile, she said Coca-Cola has informed her that it would stop further importation of premixes.

Sugar Watch, a multi-sectoral coalition in Negros, is calling for a boycott on Coca-Cola products in protest against its importing of premixes in the guise of sugar at the expense of the country’s sugar industry.

The group is set to kick off its protest against Coca-Cola in Bacolod City next week.

Martin said Coca-Cola is the largest buyer of sugar in the country. The objective of SRA is to get Coke to return to buying domestic sugar and to increase its volume of purchase, she said.

“A boycott will further decrease their (Coca-Cola) sales, thus decreasing their (sugar) market share,” Martin said.

Martin said the SRA is also keeping a close watch on High Fructose Corn Syrup that could be entering the country at larger volumes than premixes.

Meanwhile, she said millgate prices of domestic sugar went up this week as an increase in buying is expected from industrial users.

She said the prices of domestic sugar are almost the same as in the world market so it is less viable for smuggled sugar to be brought into the country at this time.

Last week the price of domestic sugar was P1,250 per Lkg and this week it went up to P1,350 to 1,400 per Lkg, Martin said.

Despite the drop in millgate prices it has been noted that retail prices have not correspondingly dropped.

The Department of Trade and Industry wants to issue a suggested reference price (SRP) for sugar noting that the retail prices do not reflect the current millgate prices, she said.

They believe refined sugar should sell at P52 a kilo and not P54, she explained.

But Martin said she is against an SRP on sugar and will inform the DTI of her position.*CPG

Bacolod City at 73 – Daan Banwa for Me
By Maresa G. Engo
Saturday, June 11, 2011

SIX days to go and Bacolod City will be celebrating its 73rd Charter Day on June 18. This special date comes on the heels of the 113th Philippine Independence Day celebration this Sunday, June 12. Then there’s also the 150th Birth Anniversary of Philippine national hero Dr. Jose Rizal on June 19.

As pointed out by Bacolod City Mayor Evelio “Bing” Leonardia in his inspirational talk at the SM City Bacolod Events Centre last June 6, the month of June is a heavyweight in terms of its historical value to the city and country.

Ladies and gentlemen of Circulo de Bacolod came to the said venue to attend the opening salvo of the weeklong celebration of the 113th Philippine Independence Day celebration.

Highlight of the program was a skit on Dr. Jose Rizal by the Kanlaon Theater Guild of Colegio San Agustin-Bacolod, which tackled the problems facing the country, like unemployment and the exodus of skilled workers and professionals. Miss Rose Joy Ann Las Piñas gave a very rousing performance of the song “Inang Bayan.”

The audience was also treated to a song number by the hottest trio in town, the DJP Trio composed of Dane, Pauline and Jeanny, who are one of the grand finalists in the Pilipinas Got Talent 2011 TV show on June 25.

Adding a touch of nostalgia to the occasion was the photo exhibit of Bacolod City during the yesteryears, which was put together by the Bacolod City Public Library and the Bacolod City Archives. The exhibit runs until today, June 12 at the SM City Bacolod’s East Bridgeway.

Villa Ica Garden, Don Salvador Benedicto
The youngest municipality o

The youngest municipality of Negros Occidental, Don Salvador Benedicto more popularly know for its acronym “DSB” is situated 2,495 feet above sea level at the mid-center of the province, 47 kilometers of good highway from capital city, Bacolod. Its composite jurisdiction includes two barangays (barrios) from Murcia town, three from San Carlos City and two of Calatrava. Established as a town in 1983, it was intended to consolidate the area into a separate and independent local government unit to counter the insurgency concentrated here. The town got its name in honor of the late Vice-Governor Salvador Benedicto, who was part in setting the Revolutionary Government of Negros Island and Siquijor during the Japanese occupation last World War II. Today, this newfound town has surpassed geographical, economic and social challenges, with its 10-year strategic master plan for residential, commercial, industrial, agricultural & fishery development zones and because of this became a budding eco attraction in the province, albeit raw and emergent.

Rice Terraces at DSB, Agricultural showcase

Though DSB is still pretty much rural, almost like a big barrio, it has already literally paved the way for bigger things to come, such as its infrastructure: impeccable picturesque highway that is the envy and adjudged “most beautiful” in the country. Its climate is moderate; cool for Philippine tropical standards with an even rainfall distribution throughout the year. Among its rural attractions are historical Barangay Igmaya-an, one of the strongholds of the province’s Revolutionary Government during the Japanese Occupation; the Monument in honor of its namesake, Don Salvador Benedicto; the picturesque mountain ranges of Mt. Mandalagan and Mt. Canla-on; the remarkable Rice Terraces, a mini-replica of Banaue’s; attractive Malatan-og Falls amidst the lush green forest, ideal for mountain trekking; the 45-meter Hanging Bridge at Barangay Igmaya-an and of course the Zigzag Road leading to the town and the impressive scenic freeway which provided the shortest route between San Carlos, the farthest city of the province to Bacolod, as well as network links to the rest of the Northern towns and cities. DSB prides itself with indigenous tribes still existing in the area and its folkloric fiesta “Kali-kalihan” commemorating the Feast of the Kali, a long lost culture of a genuine Filipino heritage and the oldest form of weaponry, the “Arnis or Escrima.”

With DSB Cultural Consultant Ismael Java, Writer-Director of "Anagas"
DSB officials are working towards providing the town with careful and conscientious advancement, slow but sure steps towards Sustainable development with its community based rural and agro tourism. In no time, it will be the country’s next green getaway hotspot.

Last March 5, 2011, I re-visited DSB and gave a talk and presentation on Sustainable Tourism & Best Green Hospitality Practices, emphasizing the need to conserve its natural resources, with careful consideration for the local community while it embarks on new tourism development to ensure its sustainability for future generations. Attended by DSB’s town officials and educators, invited guests from neighboring First District of the province comprised of councilors, tourism officers and civic leaders were also present.

I was happy to see several acts from “Anagas” which was especially presented by DSB’s Cultural Consultant, play director and writer, Ismael Java. Anagas is an original Hiligaynon (regional dialect) theatrical presentation with a profound message about the environment.

With these inspiring simple townsfolk and sincere officials dedicating their lives on the preservation of their town, we will be working together for The Negros Initiative framework of Conservation, Community Social Responsibility & Sustainable Tourism.

Visit Don Salvador Benedicto in our Negros Sustainable Tourism Suggested Tours and go home a changed person. Coming up soon!

Good evening Bacolod!!!

Council to discuss P4.9B Negros-Panay Bridge
THE Regional Development Council (RDC) in Western Visayas is set to discuss the implementation of the P4.9 billion allocated for the first phase of the construction of the Negros-Panay Bridge.

The realization of the project is seen with the thrust of President Benigno Aquino III’s administration on Public-Private Partnerships (PPP).

EB Magalona Mayor David Albert Lacson said they are hopeful of the realization of the project.

A study showed Barangay Tomongtong, EB Magalaona in Negros and the municipality of Dumanggas in Iloilo as the ideal places to build the bridge, connecting the islands of Negros and Panay.

Lacson said the bridge is expected to bring more economic progress for both Panay and Negros.

The Panay-Negros Bridge is one of RDC’s priority projects and its finalization is expected next week, the mayor said.Several feasibility studies have already been conducted for the project. (Teresa Ellera-Dulla)

Bigger human flag
expected tomorrow
BY ADRIAN NEMES III

More than 2,000 city employees, civic group members, military and policemen and students are expected to participate in the 113th commemoration of the Philippine Independence in Bacolod City tomorrow, Independence day celebration chairman, Homer Bais said yesterday.

In Negros Occidental, the Independence Day celebration will be marked by the giving of P450,000 in checks to beneficiaries of the Baranagay Insurance program to be led by Governor Alfredo Marañon, Jr and Vice Governor Genaro Alvarez at the Provincial Capitol.

In Bacolod, Senator Francis “Chiz” Escudero will be the guest speaker at the Independence Day rites.

“We are expecting a bigger human flag to parade down the city’s main thoroughfares Sunday and several roads in Bacolod will also be closed starting noon for the parade,” Bais also said.

The human flag will be composed of about 170 students from the Visayan Maritime Academy who will wear their white uniforms and about a thousand summer jobbers and Philippine Employment Office Scholars, Bais said.

The evolution of the human flag will also be shown during the parade while the different drum and bugle corps members of the schools will also participate, Bais said.

The parade will be capped with wreath- laying at the monument of the unknown soldier at the Bacolod Public Plaza, to be led by soldiers from the 303rd Infantry Brigade. War veterans will also participate, Bais also said.

There will also be a Cultural Show at the Bacolod Government Center grounds featuring the Pilipinas Kaanyag Dance Company, West Negros Chorale and Rondalla, at 6 p.m. while a kite flying contest sponsored by the City Tourism Office will be at 9 a.m. today.

During a command conference at the Bacolod City Police headquarters yesterday, City Police Director Senior Supt. Ricardo de la Paz said portions of Lacson Street in front of Business Inn up to the Capitol Lagoon will be closed to traffic starting at noon tomorrow.

He said parade participants will turn left to Hernaez Street from Lacson Street and right to Araneta Street, then to Galo Street and will end at the SM City grounds.

Traffic enforcers and members of the Bacolod City Police Traffic Management Unit will also be in full force to man the traffic while the parade is on going.

Meanwhile, Marañon will lead the flag-raising ceremony at the Provincial Capitol tomorrow morning, while a tableau presentation on the evolution of Philippine flag to be performed by the MassKara theater ensemble of the University of St. La Salle will highlight the province’s Independence Day celebration.

It will be followed by the Governonr’s 3-K and 5-K Freedom run which will go through Lacson Street up to Bata area.*APN

Museum, archives for Bacolod

WE envy Iloilo for many years because of its museum that showcases its history and its people. It is a “must” for visitors to be able to get a glimpse of Iloilo, and even Panay’s beginnings. Negros, because we share a lot in our history and kinship, is somehow reflected in the Museo Iloilo.

In 1976, we had a groundbreaking for a Negros Museum where the present Nature and Ecology Park is. Despite the initial funding from the Department of Tourism (DOT) and the grand design by National Artist Leandro Locsin, the project never got off the ground, a victim of the proverbial, too many cooks spoiling the broth.

Then the sugar crisis lashed at Negros and all the planned funds dried out. The initial DOT funding would have been sufficient for a modest one, but some people were overly ambitious and the various voices became like the Tower of Babel.

Later, the Negros Occidental provincial government converted the Capitol building into a museum. The Capitol was abandoned because of the construction of the Administration Center across the street where the provincial government held office.

The late Gov. Joseph Marañon returned the seat of the provincial government to the present Capitol that he renovated to its original splendor. The “Negros Museum” had to vacate the area.

I learned that some people in the Bacolod City government are pushing for the establishment of the city’s own museum and archives which will showcase its own history and culture. This is long overdue.

I talked about it for years. No official interest has been shown, although many Bacolodnons had dreamed of one. Now there is a plan, a considerably appropriate one, to have an integrated museum and archives.

***
During the launching of my book “Against the Rising Sun” on May 20, I bewailed the absence of an archive in the province. I cited that Bacolod has a small one lodged at the Bacolod City Library, which is more of a depository of the Minutes of the Bacolod legislative body than an archive. Strictly, it is not an archive, but a place for researchers of history, serving them even in a limited scale.

The reported plan is to later convert the present Sangguniang Panlungsod session hall into an archive when a separate legislative building is constructed. That can either take several years or a change in administration to scuttle the plan.

Why not fast-track the plan and, at least cost, have an archive and a museum at the same time? This can be housed either in the old City Hall or in the building vacated by the Tourism Office.

As much as possible, a museum must be accessible to the public, with permanent and special exhibits. The Art Association of Bacolod and other artists groups, for instance, are always looking for a place to exhibit their work and the usual available space is provided by Lopue’s Mandalagan.

With all its vaunted progress, Bacolod is actually without a soul because the spirit that makes a city a progressive one is missing — a museum. The Negros Museum serves the province and it is doing fine but Bacolod must have its own.

Consider this: Where do we bring the tourists to really appreciate the spirit that made Bacolod? The usual place is the Cathedral and the plaza and the pasalubong and gift shops.

We show tourists structures, like the New Government Center — imposing and beautiful as it is but does not provide the character that Bacolod City is made of. Only the place’s history and culture can provide that.

I suggest to our city officials to think deeply and objectively what is something in Bacolod that can give the tourists an imagery of the city? Sure, the MassKara Festival does that. But that is an event, not what the city is made of.

There are people in Bacolod City with lots of memorabilia about the city and its years of progress. I had been asked where they could be deposited. I have no answer because that means care and security that require funds.

Only the government or a rich man or family or group can provide the needed facilities .If these are lost due to our neglect to appreciate them, they are lost forever./PN

ANOTHER "BIG" INTERNATIONAL EVENT COMING UP IN AUGUST....

Nietes vacates WBO title, seeks lightfly belt
By Abac Cordero (The Philippine Star) Updated June 12, 2011 12:00 AM Comments (0)
SHARE: facebook yahoo! buzz

CEBU CITY, Philippines – Donnie Nietes is moving up in weight, and is eyeing the World Boxing Organization light-flyweight crown being held by Mexico’s Ramon Garcia Hirales.

The 29-year-old Filipino, who belongs to the famed ALA Boxing of Cebu, has relinquished his WBO minimum weight (105 lb) crown in exchange for the title shot.

Michael Aldeguer, who has taken over the reins of ALA Boxing from his father, Tony, said yesterday he already has a verbal agreement with WBO chief Paco Valcarcel.

As part of the plan, the Nietes-Hirales fight should take place by the second week of August in Bacolod City, where Nietes, who loves to carry his pet python to the ring, hails from.

Aldeguer also said there’s a plan to stage the fight at around noontime so Mexican fans will get to see the fight live. Nietes has fought thrice in Mexico, and has won thrice.

“We will probably formalize everything in the next few weeks,” said Aldeguer, adding that he is hoping to meet with television executives soon to discuss the fight coverage.

The Aldeguers are fresh from their latest promotion, “Firepower 6” which had Ray “Boom Boom” Bautista facing Mexico’s Heriberto Ruiz at the Waterfront Hotel as of presstime last night.

Hirales, just a year younger than Nietes, is being promoted by Fernando Beltran of Zanfer Promotions, which has very good ties with ALA Boxing.

The Filipino promoter said Valcarcel has made the assurance that Nietes will get the first crack at the crown which Hirales won by knocking out Colombia’s Jesus Geles in Mexico last April.

Beltran, according to Aldeguer, is very open to the idea of taking Hirales to the Philippines, and face Nietes, who also carries a very impressive ring record of 28 wins and a single loss with 16 knockouts.

Nietes’ only blemish as a fighter came very early in his career when he dropped a split decision to Angky Angkota in Jakarta in 2004, following a 13-0 start as a pro.

Hirales has a record of 16-2 with nine knockouts, and should provide the perfect challenge for Nietes as he bids for his second world title in two different weight classes.

Nietes has won three fights in Mexico, and has proven that he has what it takes to win on foreign soil, in the process also earning the respect of Mexican fight fans.

Dennis Canete of ALA Boxing said he’d seen how the Mexicans have appreciated Nietes’ skills as a boxer, adding that even Mexican fans would stop to have a picture taken with him.

“Even when we’re at the aiport, the airline staff would treat us very well,” said Canete.

Bacolod City Mayor Bing Leonardia has welcomed the plan to host the Nietes fight with open arms.

Guys ang "turtle building" at BS Aquino Drive is still on its slow 6th Floor.....sa bati-bati ko official number would be 8 or 9 floors ^^

and by the way sa naga basa di nga taga Bacolod Traffic Authority ari ay ho:

medyo NINGAS COGON ang enforcers on a weekend:

Araneta Street was full of jaywalkers kagina...the median cordon were totally missing giving these itchy-foot and ignorant jaywalkers to play "tubiganay" along Araneta St. before the plaza:bash:

why contend with a metal railing at Lacson-Galo intersection? Kadamo sang wala huya nga tricycle, trisikad and sometimes car drivers who move the railings them selves to cross the intersection at the East-to-West direction and vv. Iban gina bunggu-an pa hungod. I suggest nga concrete barriers ang ibutang da kay lantawon ta kun indi tubu-an hernia ang mag idog sina da.:bash:

a lot of hard headed and stubborn people really like to cross under the overpass of Robinsons Place.

If tamad sila mag saka, didto sila tabok sa A.Chan or sa tubang SAJ Gym. I have never heard of a hit-and-run victim who survived beneath that overpass. :bash:

Good Morning Bacolod!!!
Merci opens 23rd branch
LEADING pasalubong and souvenir center Merci opened its 23rd branch at May Fair Plaza, 13th Lacson Street, Bacolod City Friday with Bacolod City Mayor Evelio R. Leonardia as special guest.

Leonardia joined Merci’s owners Jonathan and Corazon Lo and their family, guests and friends to open the new branch.

Are you short of coins? Check out Sun.Star's multimedia special report on coin circulation.

Leonardia welcomed Merci’s new branch as a sign of Merci’s growth in the field of pasalubong products and souvenir items.

The mayor said with Merci’s quality products, Bacolod will going to move farther economically.

“Good quality products help us enhance our image to other places. We would like to see you grow because, as you grow, the city also grows with you,” Leonardia said.

Bacolod is number two out of the ten growth centers in the Philippines. The responsiveness of the local government of Bacolod to business was ranked number one, Leonardia said.

“We are still looking for additional locations, as this is part of our vision and mission that, by 2014, Merci would have a store in every key town and city in the province,” Paul A. Londres, Merci’s general manager, said.

Merci has been serving the public for 16 years now. It started as a regular bakeshop. (CNC)

Parcon: A shared responsibility
By Rodel T. Parcon, CPA, MBA
Breakthroughs
MAN creates wastes everyday. The population of Bacolod City was estimated at 531,943, as of August 1, 2010 and would be 543,220 a year later. At 540,000 population and per capita waste generation of ½ kg per person, the city is faced with the task of managing solid wastes to the tune of 270 metric tons a day translating into some 98,550 metric tons a year. A lot of wastes, indeed.

The basic philosophy of solid waste management in the Philippines, as embodied in Republic Act 9003, is shared responsibility. The waste generator (a household or an establishment), the barangay officials, the local government unit officials, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have respective roles to play in the management of wastes.
At the core of solid waste management is the call to reduce and reuse waste and then to throw residual wastes in a sanitary landfill. Only about 20 percent of wastes are to be dumped in the sanitary landfill, with 40 percent of biodegradables intended for composting into soil conditioners, and another 40 percent of recyclables for appropriate harvesting.

Waste generators are required to observe segregation of wastes at source. That is, to lump their wastes into three categories: biodegradables, recyclables and residual wastes.

Barangay officials are given the tasks of conducting grassroots information and education campaign, of putting up color-coded garbage receptacles, composting, materials recovery facility, and close arrangements with buyers of recyclables and grassroots recyclable collectors.

In order to perform their function well, the barangay officials may seek assistance from the City/Municipal Government.

Aside from giving assistance to the barangay, the City/Municipal government is responsible for the garbage collection and the sanitary landfill.

The non-governmental organizations are supposed to assist in giving technical assistance to waste generators, barangay officials and city/municipal officials. They will assist in monitoring the way waste generators, barangay officials and city/municipal officials perform their respective functions.

The roles of waste generators and barangay officials are very crucial because the way they perform their tasks spells the difference in achieving garbage reduction.

The City/Municipal Government will save a lot of money in garbage collection and sanitary landfill operation if composting and recycling of wastes substantially reduce the volume of wastes.

Just imagine the amount of money that the City of Bacolod will spend if it has to collect daily all the 270 metric tons of garbage to its sanitary landfill.

Surely, the city will save a lot of money if only 20 percent of 270 metric tons will be collected and then dumped in the sanitary landfill.

Everyone creates garbage. Thus, each one should do his/her respective role in solid waste management, for indeed, it is a shared responsibility?

ROBUST
MARINE RESERVE
Sagay City shares ‘best practices’
in preserving marine ecosystem

BY JEZZA NEPOMOCENO

SAGAY CITY, Negros Occidental — Political will, institutionalized environmental laws and strong partnership between the local government unit and stakeholders.

These were among the reasons why this city’s marine reserve is recognized in the country, and its diverse marine resources is robust and flourishing.

Sagay City Mayor Leo Rafael Cueva shared this local government’s “best practices” to the municipal mayors of Iloilo province during the latter’s visit here the other day.

The Iloilo officials who visited the city’s productive marine reserve were:

* Mayor Enrique Rojas of Leganes
* Mayor Rolando Golez of Dumangas
* Mayor Larry Villanueva of San Dionisio, and
* Mayor Carlos Betita of Carles.

With them were the municipal agricultural officers of these towns as well as those of Estancia, Ajuy, Concepcion and Zarraga, and members of the Iloilo Capitol Reporters Association.

MARINE ECOSYSTEM MANAGEMENT
The 32,000-hectare Sagay Marine Reserve in this city covers the island of Molocaboc, Duitay, Matabas, Suyac and the reefs of Carbin, Macahulum and Panal.

Four organized sections of this local government are managing the marine reserve — Resource Management, Social Development, Law Enforcement and Licensing and Permit.

The Resource Management Section conducts research, monitoring and initiation of development projects in the area, according to the city’s information and tourism officer, Helen Cutillar.

The Social Development Section, on the other hand, is mandated to establish effective community organizations and livelihood projects for the fisherfolk, she said.

According to Cutillar, the city’s Bantay Dagat falls under the Law Enforcement Section, which implements environmental laws and regulations though surveillance and monitoring of marine protected areas.

She said this city has two Bantay Dagat patrol boats, each manned by four crew volunteers and two policemen.

Due to its rich coastal areas which boast of flourishing marine life, Sagay City has been identified as one of the top tourist destinations in Negros Occidental.

The Sagay Marine Reserve was among the Top 10 innovative programs on marine conservation and protection in the country, known for its promising aquatic resources management.

The marine reserve was also given the Gawad Galing Pook Award in 1997, recognized as the Best Eco-Tourism Product in Western Visayas in 2006, and the second Most Outstanding Marine Protected Areas in the country in 2007./PN

Redistricting gets Escudero's support
By Carla N. Canet
Monday, June 13, 2011

SENATOR Francis Escudero vowed Sunday that he will vote in favor of the bill for the redistricting of the lone district of Bacolod City.

Last year, Bacolod City lone district Rep. Anthony Golez authored House Bill No. 3692, "An Act re-apportioning the lone legislative district and City Council seats of the City of Bacolod.

The bill was passed by the House of Representatives on December 8, 2010.
Ilonggo Senator Franklin Drilon also filed a counterpart bill, Senate House Bill No. 2568, in the Senate. It was referred to the committee of Senator Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

Escudero said there is a big chance that the bill will gain the approval by the Senate. Since it passed smoothly at the House of Representatives, he expressed optimism that the bill will pass as smoothly at the Senate before Congress ends.

"I am just one vote and the ball is in the hands of Sen. Marcos," Escudero added.

Golez earlier said that Senators Juan Miguel Zubiri and Bong Revilla are also supporting the bill.

Escudero was in Bacolod City Sunday as guest of honor and speaker during Bacolod's celebration of the 113th Philippine Independence Day.

'Coke boycott not a solution' (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/bacolod/local-news/2011/06/13/coke-boycott-not-solution-160869)
By Teresa Ellera-Dulla

"IT IS easier said than done," said Negros Occidental Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr. on the call of Sugar Watch to boycott Coca Cola products.

Sugar Watch, an organization of small sugar farmers and agrarian reform beneficiaries, blame the importation by Coca Cola of pre-mix sugar for the plummeting of domestic sugar prices.

Marañon doubted if the campaign will take off. He added that this move is not a solution to the problems of premix importation and sugar smuggling.

"The solution is to end sugar smuggling," the governor said.

According to the governor, government can stop sugar smuggling if it is really serious in doing so. "Sugar is a commodity that is being shipped in bulk. It is easy to detect," Marañon explained.

Last week, Sugar Watch called on the public to boycott Coca Cola products, as they vowed to launch massive protest actions starting next week.

In a press conference last week, Sugar Watch spokesman Junjun Barreta cited Coke's premix importation as the cause for the plummeting of sugar prices. He stressed that the continued importation of the premix sugar, which is 99 percent sugar and one percent coloring, threatens the sugar industry.

Such importation also threatens the livelihood of more than 2 million people, the bulk of whom are in Negros Occidental, who are directly and indirectly dependent on the industry, he added.

Barreta said that the Sugar Watch will launch an information campaign in schools to urge the students to boycott Coca Cola, the only softdrink company, which was identified to have imported premix sugar.

The group's protests actions will also include the possible a rally in front of the Coca Cola Plant in Barangay Mansilingan in Bacolod City.

He said Sugar Watch will also coordinate with the Sugar Regulatory Administration and other pertinent government agencies to study the implication of smuggling and importation of pre-mix sugar on the welfare of the sugar workers, small farmers and entrepreneurs.

With Barreta at the press conference was labor leader Wennie Sancho of the Negros Labor Coalition who issued a statement of support to the call for boycott of Coca Cola products.

Sancho said that he also believes that other sugar producers will join the call, as they are the ones primarily affected by the importation of premix sugar.

Veteran banker heads PDIC (http://www.panaynewsphilippines.com/mainnews%207.htm)

BY SAMMY JULIAN
Manila News Bureau Chief

MANILA - Malacañang belatedly announced the appointment of veteran banker Valentin Araneta as the new president and chief executive officer of the Philippine Deposit Insurance Corp. (PDIC), the state deposit insurer.

President Benigno Aquino III signed Araneta's appointment papers on May 30 yet. He replaced Jose Nograles Jr. whose irrevocable resignation took effect at the end of the previous month.

The new PDIC chief earned his AB Economics baccalaureate degree in 1971, and took his Mater’s degree in Economics at the Ateneo de Manila University.

He also studied Advanced Management Program at Wharton Business School in Pennsylvania, USA.

Araneta became the vice president and general manager of the Philippine National Bank’s International Department and Finance Management Office in 1982.

He had also been its senior executive vice president and chief operating officer in 1998.

Araneta also served as president and chief operating officer of the Rizal Commercial Banking Corp. from July 2000 to June 2003 and became its executive vice president and treasurer from July 1999 to July 2000.

He had also served as chairman of Islands Merchants Corp., a Nestlé distribution company for Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental.

Prior to his PDIC appointment, he was also the independent director of Metropolitan Bank & Trust Co. since April 2004.

At the same time, he served as a member and treasurer of the Board of Trustees of the University of St. La Salle in Bacolod City.

Earlier, Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa Jr. disclosed that 93 percent of the close to 10,000 positions that require presidential appointments have been filled and nominees for the remaining vacancies are now being vetted by the Palace search committee.

According to Ochoa, there are few vacancies left and there are already nominees for these positions.

"We are just in the process of screening these individuals,” Ochoa said in a statement.

Close to 10,000 positions in various line agencies, government-owned and -controlled corporations, government financial institutions, and constitutional commissions must be appointed by the President.

All nominees undergo a screening process and are required to submit documents to a search committee in Malacañang that vets these candidates, studies their credentials, and assesses their qualifications for the positions they have been nominated to./PN

Group demands plant’s permanent shutdown (http://www.panaynewsphilippines.com/bacolod%201.htm)
BY RANIE S. AZUE

BACOLOD City — An official of the environmental group Green Alert Negros (GAN) said the Northern Negros Geothermal Power Plant should be shut down for good.

The Energy Development Corp.’s (EDC) plan to again temporarily shutdown the geothermal plant is another ploy for it to further encroach into the buffer zone of the Mt. Kanlaon National Park, GAN spokesperson Junjun Mojica said.

He said even Provincial Board member Emilio Yulo suspects that the EDC might just further get into the buffer zone so they could meet the 49-megawatt electrical power production that they are supposed to generate.

“It is not a remote possibility and they could lobby for a national permit,” Mojica said, adding that EDC officials “were clearly fooling us.”

Mojica said: “While (the officials) stand during the hearing last Wednesday that they will not encroach further into the buffer zone of Mt. Kanlaon, it is not a guarantee that they will not.”

The GAD spokesperson said the EDC did the same earlier, and were able to get into a portion of the buffer zone, to the surprise of environmental advocates.

He pointed out that the company did so despite prohibitions stated in the National Integrated Protected Area System Law.

“The geothermal power plant operations threatened the very ecosystem that supports the island’s economy. It has cost government millions of money that otherwise could have been used for more meaningful, sustainable and nature-friendly projects. … It has not done anything good for the Negrosanons,” Mujico insisted.

“At this point, we reiterate our firm stand that the provincial government should ignore the new ploy of the (EDC) and move quickly to shutdown its NNGPP in Brgy. Mailum, Bago City for the sake of our present and long-term security,” he said.

Mujico said the provincial government should rather host a multi-stakeholder consultation on alternative renewable energy sources like solar, hydro, wind and biomass.

GAN, he said, is calling on all Negrosanons, especially the marginalized sector, to take active part in resisting all attempts to further bring destruction to our nature and people./PN

Bacolod to Host 5th APTC

Bacolod City News
Sports News

Bacolod City Mayor Evelio Leonardia has agreed to host next year’s 5th Asia Pacific Tchoukball Championship (APTC) games in this city on August 1-5, 2012.

Expected to attend are 600 to 700 athletes and coaches from 16 countries: Chinese Taipei (defending champion), Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Hongkong China, Laos, Japan, South Korea, Pakistan, India, UAE, Brunei Darussalam, Mayanmar, and the host country Philippines.

Tchoukball (pronounced chookball), a relatively new sport in the Philippines, was invented in 1960 by Dr Hermann Brandt, a Swiss sports scientist. It has been widely accepted in different countries of the world and is now gaining popularity in the Philippines. The Philippine Tchoukball Federation, headed by its president Pastor Gary Visitacion, met with Mayor Bing Leonardia to discuss the initial preparations being done and support needed from the local government. During a dinner-meeting hosted by Dr. Ver Lacson, the mayor expressed his deep interest in the competition as it will give a big boost to the local economy as well as generate opportunity for potential business investments by the officials and businessmen from other countries who will be coming to Bacolod City during this major event.

The Philippine Tchoukball Federation is sanctioned by the Federacion Internationale De Tchoukball (FITB).*

DPWH 3rd NOED Highlights Significant Accomplishment

Hinoba-an
Kabankalan City
Negros Business
Negros Occidental Philippines

The DPWH 3rd Negros Occidental Engineering District (NOED) has implemented the concreting of Bacolod South Road, at Brgy. Pook (428 LN.M.), Culipapa (990 LN.M.) and Sangke (412.35 LN.M.), Hinoba-an, Negros Occidental, which are funded under the CY 2010 Infrastructure Program. The upgrading of this road section in the amount of P46M is almost completed which will reduce the remaining gravel road by 1.85 kms., a great relief to the traveling public as the road connects Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental via Hinoba-an-Basay.

Moreover, flooding was mitigated due to raising up of the roadway and installation of drainage structures and Reinforced Concrete Box Culvert. The concreting of the remaining gravel road is scheduled for implementation in the CY 2011 Infra Program which will be totally paved by 2012.

Another significant accomplishment is the near completion of the rehabilitation of Kabankalan-Bais Road, a nautical highway thatconnects the City of Kabankalan to Negros Oriental with Cebu and Dumaguete as the major destinations.

The project has a total length of 11 kms in the amount of P240M, funded under the CY 2010 Infra Program. This involved the rehabilitation of the deteriorated existing asphalt pavement to include widening, slope protection works and installation of warning and informative signs as well as rumble strips and pedestrian lanes for public safety. The completion of the project speaks well of the gov’t efforts for the rehabilitation of all road network, a key to development in the countryside.* (Jun Gaton/Pasiplat)
